Family & Parenting / Re: Man sues wife for ugly baby
November 07, 2012, 11:08:31 PM
Feng told the Irish Times his reasons for filing the lawsuit against his wife and their "ugly" child.

"I married my wife out of love, but as soon as we had our first daughter, we began having marital issues. Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me."

Plastic surgery is common in western countries and is growing in popularity overseas in countries like South Korea.

At the end of the day with this bizarre tale, the child winds up the loser. Can you imagine what the child will think or do when she is old enough to learn about her parent's behavior?

The man who sued his spouse for their ugly child should realize that beauty is only skin-deep. China's one child policy should apply to this man, who is clearly not fit to be a father, right?

According to court documents, when Feng's wife gave birth to their baby girl, he was immediately startled by the child's appearance. He referred to the infant as "extremely ugly."

Suspecting his wife had an affair -- after all, they are both "beautiful" -- he filed for divorce and demanded a paternity test. While the results proved the Chinese man was the father, the wife confessed to having cosmetic surgery in South Korea prior to getting married.

The man then sued his wife over the ugly baby and for duping him into thinking her stunning looks was natural. A male judge agreed and awarded him damages for his pain and suffering, according to EnStarz. Imagine that?

Man sues wife; claims 'ugly' baby born horrifies him

November 3, 2012
By: Bruce Baker

Get this: a Chinese man sued his wife over their ugly baby recently. Apparently the "beautiful" couple could not have produced a child together, who "horrifies" the man. He was awarded $120,000 after a court learned the woman never mentioned having plastic surgery before their marriage. If China's one-child rule is still in play, there go their chances.

Jian Feng, according to a Local10 news report on November 2, is the man who sued his wife for their ugly baby.

For Canadians, the co-operative and even collaborative relationship between Mr. Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper will remain intact, even as Canada pushes for a reversal of Mr. Obama’s decision to prohibit the Keystone XL pipeline that would bring oil south from the oil sands.

For the world, a multilateralist president who prefers to co-operate rather than confront will seek to make the world a less incendiary place.

“Democracy in a nation of more than 300 million can be noisy and messy and complicated,” the now-and-future President told exultant supporters Wednesday morning in a speech that echoed some of the hope-and-change passion of four years before.

“We have our own opinions. Each of us has deeply held beliefs,” Mr. Obama conceded. But “these arguments that we have are a mark of our liberty.” Indeed they are.

For Americans, public health care reform is now guaranteed. Fundamental immigration reform will be a second-term priority.

Those who support a woman’s right to choose, some limitation on the right to bear arms and other core liberal values can be reassured that a Democrat will nominate Supreme Court judges for the next four years.

World Daily News / Re: Why Obama Won

Nonetheless, Mr. Obama faces a difficult four years. He must find a compromise with the lame-duck Congress to avoid the fiscal cliff at the end of December that would impose tax and spending cuts to fight the deficit. In this environment such moves could drag the economy into another recession.

The President must work with a House filled with growling Republicans, licking their wounds, to forge a pact aimed at bringing down the deficit. It has been years since America passed a budget. How does a country carry on in such circumstances?

But before we drive you to an early-in-the-day drink, let’s close by affirming what America achieved last night. It re-elected its first African-American president, a powerful balm for ancient but still-fresh racial wounds.

It projected that there was a 52 per cent spread between the Democrats and the Republicans among Latinos. Better than 90 per cent of the African American vote was pro-Obama. Women voted substantially in favour of Democrats.

So much for the Republicans’ much vaunted enthusiasm gap between their supporters and the President’s.

This is fact: Unless the Republican Party attracts more women, more of the young and more Hispanics â€" which means unless they change their ways and their world view â€" their electoral future is bleak. This was true four years ago. It is even more true today.

But that narrow band of the uncommitted grudgingly accepted that much of the bad economic news was out of the President’s hands. They held a Republican-controlled House of Representatives equally responsible for the gridlock in Washington. They did not favour cutting taxes as a recipe for reducing trillion-dollar deficits.

So enough white men joined with women of all hues, with Latinos and African Americans and Asians, with millennials and auto-industry workers â€" who accept that Washington saved their jobs when it saved their industry â€" and all the others who cast a Democratic ballot to give Mr. Obama a clear, if modest, victory.

To be more precise: Edison Research reported early Wednesday that young voters (ages 18-29) cast 19 per cent of the ballots in this election, one percentage point more than in 2008, and voted Democrat over Republican 60 per cent to 36 per cent.

“If the Republican Party cannot win in this environment,” the conservative columnist George Will declared in September, “ it has to get out of politics and find another business.” Time to go looking for a new line of work?

Yet America gave the Democratic candidate only a qualified endorsement: a wafer-thin win in the popular vote, though a more substantial win in the electoral college. At least two states â€" Indiana and North Carolina â€" that Mr. Obama won in 2008 Mr. Romney took from him in 2012.

Nonetheless, the thin veneer of moderates in key states who decide elections went with what they knew. They might not have liked the President’s health-care reforms, they certainly didn’t like the years of unemployment above 8 per cent, and they would dearly love to see the value of their house to start rising again.

But someone won, without the help of the Supreme Court. And that someone was a black former community organizer and law professor from Chicago who was seeking re-election in troubled times. And isn’t that something?

Tuesday was a dark night for the Republican Party. Despite Mr. Romney’s own moderate inclinations, the former Massachusetts governor was clearly too in thrall to the angry, vengeful Republican base.

The Grand Old Party, despite posting a better result than did John McCain in 2008, not only lost the presidency again, it failed to capture the Senate, thanks to a few radical, Tea Party-endorsed candidates who lost seats that the GOP had fully expected to win mere weeks ago.

Obama won re-election because he represents the America that is

JOHN IBBITSON
The Globe and Mail
Wednesday, Nov. 07 2012

Why, despite a struggling economy, shuddering deficits, a paralyzed Congress and a deeply cleaved nation, did Barack Obama win a second term as President of the United States? Because he represents the America that is, the America that is becoming, not the fading America of the Republican Party.

A country that is increasingly brown rather than white, a country where women and the young are finally finding their full political voice, a frightened country that looks to government to protect them from the worst, trusted Mr. Obama and did not trust Mitt Romney.

We should not overstate that victory. This divided nation has rarely been so divided: white versus brown, rural versus urban, North versus South â€" each, it seems, against the other.

• Biting and other violence has, well, dogged some White House pooches. Barney bit a journalist, while Teddy Roosevelt's bull terrier Pete literally tore the pants off the French ambassador, nearly causing an international incident. Even more shocking, Thomas Jefferson once hanged a dog for chasing his sheep, and Abraham Lincoln's dog Fido was stabbed to death in the street after putting his muddy paws on a drunk.

• George W. Bush, the 43rd President and son of 41st president George Bush, owned an English Springer Spaniel named Spot, daughter of the elder Bush's dog Millie, making Spot the only second generation White House dog ever.

• Other White House dog art owned by an institution called The Presidential Pet Museum includes portraits of George W. Bush's Barney and Miss Beazley and the Ronald Reagans' Lucky â€" made from their own hair.

• Dogs received by presidents as gifts include Obama's Bo, a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy; John F. Kennedy's Pushinka, Fluffy in Russian, received from Nikita Kruschev: Gerald Ford's Lucky, given by White House photographer David Hume Kennerly: and Lyndon B. Johnson's dog J. Edgar, named after its donor J. Edgar Hoover. But not all gift dogs have been successes. Grits, given to Jimmy Carter's daughter Amy by a teacher, had to be returned after it snapped at several White House visitors.

• While Abraham Lincoln's ill-fated dog (more on that below) bore the standard issue name Fido, other presidents had much more adventurous taste in dog names. Among the wackiest choices: Washington's Sweetlips and Drunkard, John Adams' Satan, Rutherford B. Hayes' Grim, James Garfield's Veto, and Franklin D. Roosevelt's President.

• Laddie Boy, an Airedale Terrier owned by Warren G. Harding, was the nation's first celebrity dog, appearing regularly on the front pages of major newspapers and enjoying his own seat at cabinet meetings. A lifesize sculpture of Laddie Boy, owned by the Smithsonian Museum, is made from 19,000 pennies donated by newsboys.

The presidential dog fixation doesn't end when chief executives leave office. Recent reports claim that former President George W. Bush spends all day, every day painting pictures of dogs.

Dogs and presidents share a long and, you'll pardon the expression, checkered history (Checkers was a dog owned by then-Vice President Richard Nixon and immortalized in his speech of the same name), stretching all the way back to George Washington. The evidence:

• Twenty-five presidents, starting with Washington, have owned dogs, with some of them close to being dog hoarders. Washington had 10 dogs and Herbert Hoover as well as John F. Kennedy each owned nine, but the record for most dogs in the White House is held by Calvin Coolidge, with an even dozen.

Do You Have a Dog in This Election? Pets Are Presidential

By Pamela Redmond Satran
November 5, 2012

Is the upcoming presidential election going to the dogs?

The support of dogs and their owners may be crucial to the candidates, given that every president since Warren G. Harding has owned a dog; President Obama acquired Portuguese Water Dog Bo after entering the White House.

Yet a recent study by George Washington University professors claims Bo may prove more of a liability than an asset for Obama. Dog ownership can help presidents in times of war and scandal, the study concluded, but can hurt during an economic crisis, when pictures of the president frolicking with his dog suggests that he has time and money to devote to frivolous things.

GOP candidate Mitt Romney faces his own dog-connected liability: a family pet who traveled on vacation tied to the roof of Romney's station wagon. A Facebook campaign called Dogs Against Romney reached 100,000 followers last week.

A disillusioned Lazenby quit after that one movie, and with Moore in another TV series (The Persuaders with Tony Curtis), it looked like there might be another cattle call. But The Persuaders bombed, and Moore became the longest-running Bond, giving up the role in 1985 after A View To A Kill.

ALMOST BOND: Rex Harrison

ALMOST BOND: Jude Law (Daniel Deme/WENN.COM)

Fleming was a Moore fan. But Broccoli thought him too pretty. The producers won out (Moore, of course, would get his chance later).

Bond changes since then have been like beauty pageants, with runners-up littering the landscape. When Connery quit in '69 and George Lazenby was hired for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, also-rans included Oliver Reed, Adam West (!), Roger Moore (held back by his TV contract) and young future-Bond Timothy Dalton.

ALMOST BOND: Colin Firth (Ian Wilson/WENN.COM)

Cary Grant - nearing 60 at the time - was also under consideration, as were Richard Burton and Stewart Granger.

In the end, however, the choice came to Roger Moore (of TV's The Saint fame) and a rough-hewn young Scot named Sean Connery, who legend has it, was made to wear bespoke suits to bed to get him used to wearing them.

ALMOST BOND: James Mason

ALMOST BOND: Stewart Granger

Interestingly, when two producers, an Italian and a Canadian - Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman - secured the rights to all Fleming's books except Casino Royale, Fleming's own choice for Bond was David Niven.

Now Niven (some of you may have to ask your grandparents) was a suave British actor who specialized in witty repartee, but he was no action star. Inappropriate old-school Brits like Niven, Rex Harrison and James Mason all turned down the Bond role, usually because they only wanted to do it once.

If you think the debate of who should play James Bond is contentious now, think of what it was like before Bond hit the screen.

Ian Fleming's novels are seldom taken into account anymore, and to some extent hardly were - although Daniel Craig takes Bond to a Fleming-esque almost psychopathic, on-the-edge place.

November 06, 2012, 09:59:08 PM
Males having sex with other males were the predominant type of sexual transmission with 171 cases.

Out of the 316 new cases of HIV, 10 were reported as acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases.

Furthermore, 2,355 out of the 2,466 cases were males and the 20 to 29 year old age group had the most number of cases for 2012.

“For the male age group, the most number of cases were found among the 20-24 years old (15 cases), 25-29 years old, (26 cases), and 30-34 years old (18 cases),” the Philippine HIV/AIDS registry said.

The overall figure for newly diagnosed HIV cases since January up to September has reached 2,466.

But no death was recorded for September.

316 New HIV Cases Recorded

By JENNY F. MANONGDO
November 6, 2012

MANILA, Philippines --- A total of 316 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were recorded by the STD/AIDS Cooperative Central Laboratory (SACCL) of the Department of Health (DoH) last September, it was reported yesterday.

The Philippine HIV/AIDS Registry said the figure is 25 percent higher compared to the same period last year with 253 cases recorded.

Forty-two of the 316 reported cases were overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who acquired the infection through sexual contact.

“Most of the cases (96 percent) were males. The median age was 28 years. The 20 to 29 year age-group had the most number of cases. Fifty-four percent or 170 of the reported cases were from the National Capital Region (NCR),” the registry said.

“Reported modes of transmission were sexual contact (312 cases) and needle sharing among injecting drug users (4 cases),” it added.

“We [BSP] have maintained that external competitiveness is more than the exchange rate. It is principally increasing productivity and reducing cost,” Tetangco said in a Tuesday text mesage.

The BSP does not target a particular exchange rate but instead maintains a presence when the volatility is excessive, Tetangco said.

A much earlier report from last October 8 said the BSP had stressed that it would not increase its dollar-buying activities just so the peso would become artificially weak.

While a strong peso hurts exporters, it benefits importers. This is because a strong peso makes imported goods cheaper in local currency terms.

And because it helps make imports, such as oil, cheaper, a strong peso likewise helps temper overall inflation in the country.

The peso, which lingers in the 41-to-a-dollar level, has strengthened against the US dollar by about 6 percent since the start of the year. â€" DVM, GMA News

BSP again says no to deliberate weakening of the peso

November 6, 2012

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, reiterating earlier statements it made in early October, again insisted it will not deliberately weaken the peso against the US dollar. Rather, the BSP would have the exchange rate determined by the market.

The BSP explained that, while deliberately weakening the peso may benefit exporters, the same move could be disadvantageous to other sector.

The clamor for the BSP to weaken the peso comes from export groups and some economists supporting the export sector. They said the appreciation of the peso so far this year has made Philippine-made goods more expensive in dollar terms and thus less competitive in the global market.

They want the BSP to engage more heavily in dollar buying in the foreign exchange market so that the dollar will strengthen and the peso will weaken.

BSP Governor Amando Tetangco Jr., however, said exporters should not rely on the exchange rate to remain competitive.

Saffron harvest begins in India

Yawar Nazir / Getty Images Contributor

A Kashmiri farmer picks saffron flowers in a farm on Monday, Nov. 05, 2012 in Pampore, south of Srinagar the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. The production of Saffron, the precious spice owing to vast acreage, is falling rapidly in Indian Administered Kashmir. Farmers have become concerned at the falling yield of the saffron crop year after year with the changing climatic conditions responsible for a 50 to 60 percent decrease in the yield for the last two decades. Approximately 5,000 flowers are required to provide threads enough to make an ounce. Saffron is a precious spice because of the vast acreage involved in addition to the labor-intensive handpicking of the flowers and extracting of the tiny threads.

this author has no experience with philippine democracy and its electoral process.  he will be more shocked.  imagine, we have fathers, wives, sons, and daughters running for different offices at the same time, they either win or are cheated because in our elections no one loses, and some even die for democracy because of private armies.  christopher boian should come to the philippines for an experience of a lifetime.

one of my all-time favorites too.

i remember watching it with a friend, straight from our comprehensive exams for our m.a. in literature, wondering why in a roomful of examinees for different academic disciplines, we the literature examinees were the last to leave the room.  the mba people were the first to leave, followed by physics, english language teaching (elt), etc.  but we, who called ourselves masters of the dinosaurs, ended up last.

naghingos-hingos pa intawon mig analyze ug explain ug different works, from the ancient to the current, from poetry to short stories, tagpila na ka blue books ang among nasuwatan ug answers.  duha namo gihilantan pagkahuman.  hilantan pod unta ko kun wa pa ko motan-aw ug forrest gump nga mora kog buing kusog kaayo akong katawa bisan sa mga parte nga di kataw-anan.  nakahungaw ug ahat ang akong hilanat. ;D
