Ramos said the family would escort his niece Rosa's body back home for a viewing.

The quake, which was 20 miles deep, was centered 15 miles off the coastal town of Champerico and 100 miles southwest of Guatemala City. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since a 1976 temblor that killed 23,000.

Officials said most of 100 missing were from San Marcos, where people farm corn and herd cattle, mostly for their own survival.

Hospital officials in San Marcos said they had received 150 injured.

Perez said more than 2,000 soldiers were deployed to help with the disaster. A plane had made at least two trips to carry relief teams to the area.

"One thing is to hear about what happened and another thing entirely is to see it," the president told The Associated Press. "As a Guatemalan I feel sad ... to see mothers crying for their lost children."

Perez said the government would pay for the funerals of all victims in the impoverished region.

Efrain Ramos helped load a tiny casket carrying the body of his 6-year-old niece from San Marcos' morgue to a waiting pickup truck.

"The little girl died when a wall fell over her," a shocked Ramos told a reporter. He said the girl was playing in her room when the quake hit.

Sobbing uncontrollably, the girl's mother hugged the coffin wrapped with white lace and tulle.

More than 300 firefighters, policemen and civilians dug desperately at a half-ton mound of sand at a quarry trying to rescue seven people believed buried alive. Among those under the sand was a 6-year-old boy who had accompanied his grandfather to work.

"I want to see Giovanni! I want to see Giovanni!" the boy's mother, 42-year-old Francisca Ramirez, frantically cried. "He's not dead. Get him out."

By Wednesday night, firefighters had dug out two bodies from the quarry, including Giovanni's.

Perez flew to San Marcos to view the damage in this lush mountainous region of 50,000 indigenous farmers and ranchers, many belonging to the Mam ethnic group.

President Otto Perez Molina said that 40 people died in the state of San Marcos and eight more were killed in the neighboring state of Quetzaltenango.

Hundreds of people crammed into the hallways of San Marcos' small hospital after the quake seeking help for injured family members. Some complained they were not getting care quickly enough.

Ingrid Lopez, who bought in a 72-year-old aunt whose legs were crushed by a falling wall, said she had waited hours for an X-ray.

"We ask the president to improve conditions at the hospital," she said. "There isn't enough staff."

Eblin Cifuentes, a 26-year-old law student, and a group of his classmates already were collecting medical supplies as part of a school drive to provide aid for the only hospital in San Marcos, a poor, mainly indigenous mountain area of subsistence farms. When the quake hit, the group decided to bring everything they had collected.

"Thank God nothing happened to us and that's why we have to help out," Cifuentes said.

The quake caused terror over an unusually wide area, with damage reported in all but one of Guatemala's 22 states and shaking felt as far away as Mexico City, 600 miles (965 kilometers) to the northwest.

It hit hardest in San Marcos, where more than 30 homes collapsed and many of the colorful adobe buildings in its center were either cracked or reduced to rubble, including the police station and the courthouse. The temblor tore a large gash in one of the streets. Hundreds of frightened townspeople stayed in the open, refusing to go back inside after more than five strong aftershocks shook the area.
#28222
"We started rescue work very early," said Julio Cesar Fuentes of the municipal fire department. "The objective is our hope to find people who were buried."

Residents venturing outside into the morning cold found the city paralyzed and businesses closed.

In the town of San Cristobal Cochu, firefighters picked at a collapsed house trying to dig out 10 members of one family, including a 4-year-old child, who were buried, fire department spokesman Ovidio Perez told the radio station Emisoras Unidas.

Volunteers carrying boxes of medical supplies began arriving in the area in western Guatemalan late Wednesday.

Guatemala Earthquake 2012: Temblor Death Toll Rises to 48

By SONIA PEREZ-DIAZ and ROMINA RUIZ-GOIRIENA
AP, 11/08/12

SAN MARCOS, Guatemala â€" Guatemalans fearing aftershocks huddled in the dark and frigid streets of this mountain town wrapped in blankets early Thursday, while others crowded inside its hospital, the only building left with electricity after a powerful earthquake killed at least 48 people and left dozens more missing.

Crews worked through the night in San Marcos, searching rubble for survivors and more dead following the magnitude 7.4 quake that struck Wednesday near Guatemala's border with Mexico.

Rescuers began employing heavy machinery early Thursday to search for more survivors.

History / Re: The Ankh
November 08, 2012, 11:50:36 PM
The popularity of the ankh is evident in the numerous and varied types of everyday objects which were shaped in the form of the ankh. In Tutankhamun's tomb, a gilded mirror case was found in the shape of the ankh (see above left). The artist clearly was enjoying a play on words, as the Egyptian word for "mirror" was also, "ankh." Other objects such as spoons and sistrums were constructed in this familiar shape.

The ankh was popular throughout Egyptian history and due to its cruciform shape remained so into the Coptic period. It entered Christian iconography as the crux ansata, the handled or "eyed" cross.

History / Re: The Ankh
November 08, 2012, 11:43:46 PM
Meaning: While the origins of the ankh may be obscure, the meaning is certainly clear - "life". It is with this basic connotation that the sign is carried in the hands of many Egyptian deities.

The ankh may represent the life-giving elements of air and water. It was often shown being offered to the king's lips as a symbol of the "breath of life." Anthropomorphic pictures of the ankh sometimes show it holding an ostrich-feather fan behind the pharaoh in a variant form of this idea. Similarly, chains of ankhs were shown poured out of water vessels over the king as a symbol of the regenerating power of water. Libation vessels which held the water used in religious ceremonies were themselves sometimes produced in the shape of the ankh hieroglyph.

Ankh

Appearance: The ankh is one of the most familiar of Egyptian hieroglyphs. It resembles the Christian cross, with a loop above the transverse bar. Theories on its origins are numerous and varied; ranging from sexual symbolism to the common sandal strap. Like the Knot of Isis, which it resembles, it is most likely depicts some kind of elaborate bow. Detailed representations of the ankh show that the lower section is actually comprised of two parts - the ends of the bow. Early examples of the ankh actually show the ends separated.

Originally, the ankh may have been a knot with some specific religious or mythical significance.

He said it would be enough for Obama to invite an opponent of Netanyahu’s for a meeting in Washington ahead of the election in order to signal to Israelis voters which candidate the U.S. favors.

Most polls show Netanyahu winning the election and governing for another four years with roughly the same coalition of right-wing and religious parties he presides over now. The picture could change if Ehud Olmert, a former prime minister and political centrist, enters the contest. Analysts believe Obama’s victory raises the chances of Olmert joining the race.

http://matzav.com/
#28243
The Israeli newspaper widely viewed as a mouthpiece for Netanyahu’s Likud party, Israel Hayom, ran no fewer than four opinion pieces on Tuesday endorsing Romney. While the arguments for backing Romney resonated with many Israelis, they seemed to have little impact on American Jews. Exit polls showed some 70 percent of Jewish voters cast their ballots for Obama, only slightly less than in 2008.

Drucker, the political analyst, said Obama’s posture ahead of Israel’s Jan. 22 election depended on the country’s political landscape. “Obama will ask himself whether there’s a real rival to Netanyahu in the Israeli election campaign. If he sees one, it could be that in a very subtle, very polite way, he might try to help the rival.”
#28244
Officials close to Netanyahu have said he laments that his two terms as prime minister have coincided with Democratic presidencies. Netanyahu first served as Israel’s leader from 1996 to 1999, while Bill Clinton was in the White House. He faced heavy pressure from Clinton to accept compromises with the Palestinians stemming from the Oslo peace accords. One Washington insider said Obama-administration people refer to Netanyahu lightheartedly as the “Republican representative from the state of Israel.”

Obama supporters point to Netanyahu’s embrace of Romney during the candidate’s visit to Israel in August and his harsh criticism of Obama in September over his handling of the nuclear crisis with Iran as examples of Netanyahu’s unseemly involvement in the race.
#28245
But others said quietly that on everything from settlement expansion in the West Bank to military action against Iran’s nuclear program, Romney, the Republican candidate, would have allowed Netanyahu more leeway. The assumption stems in part from the campaign rhetoric of Romney himself, who accused Obama during the campaign of being too harsh with Netanyahu and “throwing Israel under the bus.”

But it also reflected a higher comfort level Netanyahu and other members of his right-wing government have with Republicans over Democrats. “We hope to see a change in Obama’s attitudes towards Israel,” Likud lawmaker Danny Danon said about his reelection. “A change that shows he understands that he cannot appease the Muslim world and pressure Israel,” he told The Daily Beast.
#28246
Others wonder if Obama might even try to subtly undermine Netanyahu’s reelection campaign. “Netanyahu took a huge risk, one that no other prime minister has ever dared take. He bet on one of the candidates in the American presidential campaign,” said Raviv Drucker, a political analyst for Israel’s Channel 10 News. “But the gamble failed and now he has to contend with the results,” he told Israel’s Army Radio.

Netanyahu, whose relationship with Obama has been fraught since their first summit meeting in 2009, denies having taken sides. Some members of his ruling coalition rushed to make clear they’re not disappointed by Obama’s victory.

“I think he’ll be a very good president for Israel,” said Danny Ayalon, the deputy foreign minister.

Analysis: Barack Obama’s Win, Bibi Netanyahu’s Loss

Wednesday November 7, 2012

The brief statement included the diplomatic essentials. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu “congratulates President Barack Obama on his election victory” and notes that the strategic alliance between the two countries is “stronger than ever.”

What it didn’t convey was the not-so-diplomatic truth about Netanyahu and the American presidential race: that the Israeli leader preferred Obama’s rival, Mitt Romney, and did a poor job of hiding it in the months leading up to yesterday’s vote.

Now, as Obama sets his agenda for the next four years, some Israelis believe he will return the favor by taking tougher positions with Netanyahu on things like negotiations with the Palestinians.

When the exposure and adoration of the Eucharist is constant (twenty-four hours a day), it is called Perpetual adoration. In a monastery or convent, it is done by the resident monks or nuns and, in a parish, by volunteer parishioners since the 20th century.  In the opening prayer of the Perpetual chapel in St. Peter Basilica Pope John Paul II prayed for a perpetual adoration chapel in every parish in the world.  Pope Benedict XVI instituted perpetual adoration for the laity in each of the five dioceses of Rome. (wikipedia)
#28274
Christian meditation performed in the presence of the Eucharist outside of Mass is called Eucharistic meditation. It has been practiced by such as Peter Julian Eymard, Jean Vianney and Thérèse of Lisieux.  Authors such as the Venerable Concepcion Cabrera de Armida and Blessed Maria Candida of the Eucharist have produced large volumes of text based on their Eucharistic meditations. (wikipedia)
#28275
Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ, who is believed by Catholics to be present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, under the appearance of the consecrated host, in the form of hosts or bread. As a devotion, Eucharistic adoration and meditation are more than merely looking at the Blessed Host, but are believed to be a continuation of what was celebrated in the Eucharist.  From a theological perspective, the adoration is a form of latria, based on the tenet of the presence of Christ in the Blessed Host. (wikipedia)
#28276
Eucharistic adoration is a practice in the Roman Catholic Church, and in a few Anglican and Lutheran churches, in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed and adored by the faithful.

Jenneth, another strong prayer that I also endorse to you. It is very strong and can help you achieve inner peace and the comfort that falls like dew into your soul...

The Litany for Interior Peace

V. Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
R. Make my heart like unto Thine.

From the desire of being esteemed,Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire to be sought, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire to be mourned, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of praise, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of preference, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of influence, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of approval, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of authority, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of humiliations, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of repulse, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of calumny, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of oblivion, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of ridicule, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of injury, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suspicion, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than myself, Jesus, grant this desire.
That others may be more highly esteemed, Jesus, grant this desire.
That others may grow and increase in honor, and I decrease, Jesus, grant that I may desire it.

Jesus, mercy.
Our Lady, help us.

Let Us Pray:  Pour forth Thy grace into our hearts, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that we who refrain from sin by self-denial, may be afflicted in time rather than condemned to eternal punishment, through Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

it's a great prayer, lorenz.  thanks much for this.

Some Republicans I spoke to at the Romney event in Boston on Tuesday night tried to blame Hurricane Sandy for the loss. They insisted it blunted the Romney momentum and had the election been delayed a week, they would win. Unfortunately that ignores the ugly truth that the Republican party failed to greatly expand its support into key demographics and ultimately, their candidate wasn’t good enough.

Poor candidate: Mitt Romney was widely regarded, even privately by people on his own side, as a poor presidential candidate. Only a late surge put him close to Barack Obama in the polls. He was behind the entire time. He seemed to lack core convictions. To quote one journalist â€" "There seemed to be an air of entitlement around Mitt Romney; that he wanted to be president to say he was president". His one foreign trip was a disaster and reflected badly on him and the US. And he would talk about his policies in only the broadest of terms. People needed a good reason to ditch Obama and vote for Romney and he failed to provide. It was a strategic mistake.

Secret video: The moment Mitt Romney was secretly filmed telling wealthy donors that almost half the voters in America believe they are "victims" and expect the government to provide free healthcare, food and housing did him significant damage. That simply reinforced the image Democrats had created of a wealthy out of touch millionaire. He initially explained that he had simply expressed his thoughts and ideas "inelegantly" before later apologising completely saying: "That was wrong". At later campaign events he insisted if elected, he would care for 100 per cent of the American people. That simply reminded voters of the comment and rang hollow and untrue.

Lost women: The gender gap in the election was significant. While Romney took the majority of men, Barack Obama won the woman’s vote by 11 points. That’s a huge constituency to lose. Romney hammered on about the poor economy, but during the final weeks of campaigning, things started to look a little better. That let women concentrate on social issues such as reproductive care, healthcare and education. He wasn’t helped by refusing to disown a Republican candidate who suggested a woman made pregnant by rape had received "a gift from God". Women simply trusted Obama more on these key issues. In general terms, Romney never managed to convince Americans he cared about them as much as Americans believe Barack Obama cares about them.

Mendacity: Romney’s campaign team â€" when confronted with a number of errors in statements and speeches â€" famously explained that: "We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers". Or in other words: "We shall say what we want to win and we don’t care if you say if it’s true or not". He accused Barack Obama of going on a foreign tour and "apologising for America". He didn’t. He criticised the president for breaking a promise to keep unemployment under 8 per cent. He never said such a thing. He insisted his economic policies would create 12 million new jobs in four years, but the figures his campaign supplied simply didn’t add up. Those are just three examples from a candidate described by one critic as being engaged in "foundational lying". In the last week of the contest, campaigning in Ohio, the Republican hopeful suggested a local car maker was planning to shift production to China. The company boss, in a fairly unusual intervention in a presidential election, said the claim was false. In the final few days of the election, the row badly damaged a candidate who desperately needed success in Ohio.

Inconsistency: No one knew what Mitt Romney really stood for. He had no base of support in the party and shifted from being a moderate to win office in Massachusetts to claiming he was a "severely conservative governor" when he decided to run for president. In a fight against Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachman and Newt Gingrich, he had to step away from moderate positions. If he hadn’t, he feared the core of the Republican Party would never support him. Yet in the last few weeks, he moved back to the political centre ground to try to convince independents to vote for him. Over the course of his political career, he flipped on gays, guns, abortion even tax cuts. He may be a pragmatic businessman but it left voters unsure of which Mitt they would get in the Oval office.

Five reasons why Romney lost

Alan Fisher

Mitt Romney was widely regarded, even privately by people on his own side, as a poor presidential candidate [Reuters]

Mitt Romney has always been much more of a businessman than a politician.

The majority of his election campaign was based on the business expertise he’d bring to the Oval office and how he could translate his successful and lucrative time in the private sector to creating a stronger American economy. He had a five-point plan. He mentioned it at every campaign event, at the debates and in TV ads. The people didn’t buy it.

Here are the five reasons why Mitt Romney lost the 2012 presidential election:

kining snow maayo lang kung picture.  being in its midst is another thing.  motingog ang dunggan, mohapdos ang tutonlan, mapuwa ang ilong, numb ang tiil ug kamot, and when the temperature rises above zero and the snow melts, lapok intawon; then suddenly the temperature goes down and the melted snow freezes over again, asows, sayon ra ang dakdak.  so yes, i am thankful for wherever i would be this christmas, be it white, green or brown, as long as i'm with family and friends. :)

not in our selective justice system.  no siree!

texas has the most number of executions in the u.s., has its crime rate gone down?  are there less guns in that state or in the u.s. for that matter?  will a kennedy scion (michael skakel) imprisoned now for the crime of murder ever be executed?
