Bergoglio was elected pope on 13 March 2013, the second day of the 2013 Papal conclave, taking the papal name Francis. The first thought by many is that he chose Francis after Francis of Assisi. However, as a Jesuit, many believe he chose Francis after Francis Xavier.

Bergoglio is the first Jesuit priest chosen to be pope. He is also the first pope from the Americas, the New World, and the Southern Hemisphere. He is the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. The last non-European pope, St. Gregory III, was born in Syria and reigned from 731 to 741. Cardinal Bergoglio is generally believed to have been the runner up in the last conclave in 2005, which elected Benedict XVI as Pope. --Wiki

Bergoglio compared this concept of Catholicism, "this Church of 'come inside so we make decisions and announcements between ourselves and those who don't come in, don't belong," to the Pharisees of Christ's time â€" people who congratulate themselves while condemning all others.

This sort of pastoral work, aimed at capturing more souls and building the flock, was an essential skill for any religious leader in the modern era, said Bergoglio's authorized biographer, Sergio Rubin.

But Bergoglio himself felt most comfortable taking a very low profile, and his personal style was the antithesis of Vatican splendor. "It's a very curious thing: When bishops meet, he always wants to sit in the back rows. This sense of humility is very well seen in Rome," Rubin said before the 2013 conclave to choose Benedict's successor. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Newly elected Pope Francis I waves to the waiting crowd from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica on March 13, 2013 in Vatican City, Vatican. Bergoglio's legacy as cardinal includes his efforts to repair the reputation of a church that lost many followers by failing to openly challenge Argentina's murderous 1976-83 dictatorship.

He also worked to recover the church's traditional political influence in society, but his outspoken criticism of President Cristina Kirchner couldn't stop her from imposing socially liberal measures that are anathema to the church, from gay marriage and adoption to free contraceptives for all.

"In our ecclesiastical region there are priests who don't baptize the children of single mothers because they weren't conceived in the sanctity of marriage," Bergoglio told his priests. "These are today's hypocrites. Those who clericalize the Church. Those who separate the people of God from salvation. And this poor girl who, rather than returning the child to sender, had the courage to carry it into the world, must wander from parish to parish so that it's baptized!"

Groups of supporters waved Argentine flags in St. Peter's Square as Francis, wearing simple white robes, made his first public appearance as pope.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening," he said before making a reference to his roots in Latin America, which accounts for about 40 percent of the world's Roman Catholics.

Bergoglio often rode the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularly visited the slums that ring Argentina's capital. He considers social outreach, rather than doctrinal battles, to be the essential business of the church.

He accused fellow church leaders of hypocrisy and forgetting that Jesus Christ bathed lepers and ate with prostitutes.

"Jesus teaches us another way: Go out. Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the Word in body as well as spirit," Bergoglio told Argentina's priests last year.

VATICAN CITY (AP) â€" Pope Francis is the first ever from the Americas, an austere Jesuit intellectual who modernized Argentina's conservative Catholic church.

Known until Wednesday as Jorge Bergoglio, the 76-year-old is known as a humble man who denied himself the luxuries that previous Buenos Aires cardinals enjoyed. He came close to becoming pope last time, reportedly gaining the second-highest vote total in several rounds of voting before he bowed out of the running in the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI.

In one of the stranger stories I’ve ever heard an 8-year-old boy in South Africa has married a 61-year-old woman and mother of five because it was his dead grandfather’s wish. That’s correct, they’re married, let that fact settle in for a moment. Allegedly, after his death the family of the boy was fearing a supernatural punishment from his grandfather, so they arranged the wedding. “This is the first time this has happened in the family,” Sanele’s mother, Patience Masilela said.

“Sanele is named after his grandfather, who was never had a white wedding before he died so asked Sanele to get married. He chose Helen because he loves her.” She went on to add, “I didn’t have a problem with it because I know it’s what the ancestors wanted and it would make them happy.”

Thankfully, Senele did add that when he grew older he would marry a woman his own age. Needless to say, the ceremony shocked some people in the community. -- http://thechive.com/

{T]he Japanese started selecting prisoners and everyday one prisoner was taken out and killed and eaten by the soldiers. I personally saw this happen and about 100 prisoners were eaten at this place by the Japanese. The remainder of us were taken to another spot 50 miles [80 km] away where 10 prisoners died of sickness. At this place, the Japanese again started selecting prisoners to eat. Those selected were taken to a hut where their flesh was cut from their bodies while they were alive and they were thrown into a ditch where they later died.

While Soviet citizens were being forced to eat their fellow men in Leningrad, Japanese soldiers the world over were doing essentially the same thing. The only difference was that they didn’t always do it merely because they were hungry.

Victims (invariably prisoners of war) were coldly killed, and their bodies then completely stripped of all consumable flesh (usually leaving only their hands and feet untouched). But this wasn’t always the case; some unlucky victims had the meat ripped from their arms and legs while they were still alive, after which they’d be thrown into pits to die. But here’s the worst part: some Japanese soldiers and officers didn’t carry out this act due to hunger-induced desperationâ€"they did it just to make a point. The point presumably being that they were pure evil.
#28142
In some cases, flesh was cut from living people: another Indian POW, Lance Naik Hatam Ali (later a citizen of Pakistan), testified that in New Guinea:

the Japanese started selecting prisoners and everyday one prisoner was taken out and killed and eaten by the soldiers. I personally saw this happen and about 100 prisoners were eaten at this place by the Japanese. The remainder of us were taken to another spot 50 miles [80 km] away where 10 prisoners died of sickness. At this place, the Japanese again started selecting prisoners to eat. Many written reports and testimonies collected by the Australian War Crimes Section of the Tokyo tribunal, and investigated by prosecutor William Webb (the future Judge-in-Chief), indicate that Japanese personnel in many parts of Asia and the Pacific committed acts of cannibalism against Allied prisoners of war. In many cases this was inspired by ever-increasing Allied attacks on Japanese supply lines, and the death and illness of Japanese personnel as a result of hunger. However, according to historian Yuki Tanaka: "cannibalism was often a systematic activity conducted by whole squads and under the command of officers". This frequently involved murder for the purpose of securing bodies. For example, an Indian POW, Havildar Changdi Ram, testified that: " on November 12, 1944 the Kempeitai beheaded an Allied pilot. I saw this from behind a tree and watched some of the Japanese cut flesh from his arms, legs, hips, buttocks and carry it off to their quarters... They cut it small pieces and fried it."

What about sterling silver?

Sterling silver has been a savvy alternative for white gold during the difficult economy, and while it used to be more popular with just the younger, edgier consumer, these days it has much more mass appeal.  So much so that retailers are now offering fine gemstones with silver--something you used to see only with gold, says Lau. Interested?

Keep in mind that in the US, the sterling silver standard is 92.5% real silver. Don’t buy it if there isn’t a “925” stamp on it. And keep in mind that the lower price you’re paying for silver means more maintenance. To keep silver jewelry from tarnishing consider keeping a piece of chalk in your jewelry box.
#28159
Yellow gold? White? Rose?

Yes, it’s confusing, and while largely a personal decision, there are a few things to keep in mind, says Lau. For starters, white or rose gold costs about 10% more than yellow gold. If you want the “look for less,” consider gold-plated jewelry. “Gold plated” and “gold overlay” mean the same thing and guarantee a thicker layer of finish than “vermeil” which is a flash finish that is thinner and less consistent, but more affordable.  Lau recommends buying vermeil finished pieces for fashionable pieces you want for a season or two. For pieces you want to wear for a lifetime, solid gold is best.
#28160
How much can you expect to pay?

That depends on the weight of the metal and the gemstone.  So keep that in mind, especially when buying online, says jewelry expert, Michele Lau.  To keep yourself from getting ripped off, ask yourself the following:

How long has the company been around?

What is its return policy?

Is the jewelry featured on the website visible from all directions?

Is the company transparent with the gram weights and the size of the gemstones?

What determines price?

The purity of the metal is one of the elements that determines the price.  Gold purity is indicated with a stamp of 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K.  And different countries have their own standards.  For example, for a piece to be considered gold in the US, it must be at least 10K.  In Britain and Canada: 9K; In Italy and France: 18K.  Anything over 18K is really too soft for everyday wear.  That’s why jewelry stores in the US sell mostly 14K.

Initially, Slevin was awarded $22 million by a jury, but Dona Ana County appealed. The two parties reached an agreement this week. According to NBC News, Slevin's attorney, Matt Coyte, said his client's "mental health has been severely compromised from the time he was in that facility. That continues to be the same. No amount of money will bring back what they took away from him. But it’s nice to be able to get him some money so he can improve where he is in life and move on."

During his 22 months in solitary confinement, Slevin developed bedsores and lost 50 pounds. The ordeal began in 2005 when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and stealing a car, which he says he borrowed from a friend. Slevin was never brought before a judge nor was he officially convicted of any crime. He said he wrote letters, begging for help with his depression. The before and after photos show the effect the 22 months of neglect had.

"Why they did what they did, I'll never know," Slevin told KOB4-TV. "Walking by me, watching me deteriorate day after day after day, and they did nothing at all to get me help."

Slevin's attorney said his client was battling depression at the time of his arrest. His health woes continue. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. He also suffers from post traumatic stress disorder due to his time in jail.

Jess Williams, Dona Ana County's public information director, told NBC News that the jail is making an effort to improve the way it treats prisoners with mental illness.

Stephen Slevin spent 22 months in solitary confinement in a New Mexico jail. During that time, his mental health deteriorated, fungus grew on his skin, and he was forced to pull his own tooth after being denied access to a dentist. If you think you have what it takes, you’ve got to ask yourself a few questions:

What makes you think you’re smarter than the thousands of other very smart people out there?

What makes you think you can deliver better results than the best and the brightest out of MIT math and engineering programs now working on Wall Street?

Do you really think you’re going to have a better career doing this than a more conventional career?

What is the endgame?  Are you going to do this for the rest of your life?

What are you going to do when you blow through you life savings chasing this sham?

There’s a difference between a retail investor like me, who wants to own a piece of Apple or Baidu and a day trader.  I’m an investor and I hold for months or years.  A daytrader is trying to profit purely from little momentum shifts, capturing a few pennies here a few there, often with leverage to make it worthwhile.  The transaction costs and taxes will often chew up what little edge you think you can eek out.  And then, there’s the downside risk of loss (even when investing in gold).  It’s a net losing game and if you think you can “win” with all these headwinds, you may want to realistically assess why you’re so overconfident.

Inspiration & Hope / A cautionary anecdote
March 09, 2013, 02:54:35 PM
One of my old college buddies was a day-trader for about 10 years out of college.  It’s what he did for a living â€" some technical analysis, some momentum trading, some fundamental.  He didn’t work for a large firm, he worked for himself.  He was able to eek out a living, but he didn’t get rich.  He eventually started shifting away from it and earning income other ways like through insurance and other means.  He said the stress was killing him and that he was basically “gambling for a living”.  It didn’t seem to the the most fulfilling, or even profitable venture.  I’m sure a daytrader will come across this article and dispel some of these opinions, but seriously, if you’re one of them â€" do you think a typical American hearing this commercial should quit their job and try daytrading for a living?  You can’t be serious.
