1980 MERCEDES G230; 1981 PEUGEOT 504

During a trip to Germany in 1980, Mercedes provided a customized Mercedes G230 which would become the guidepost for Popemobiles to come.  With a transparent superstructure and elevated viewing position, the G230 made crowd-surfing with the Pope look good.

Believe it or not, there was a Peugeot 504 converted for holy-rolling.  The 504 was used by John Paul II in a visit to Lyon, France, and still exists in a Peugeot Museum in Sochaux.  Go make a pilgrimage to see it.

1979 FCS STAR; 1979 FORD TRANSIT

Following his elevation to the Papacy, Karol Józef WojtyÅ,a returned to his native Poland as John Paul II, with an impressive Popemobile in tow.  The FCS Star is a Polish-built industrial truck normally outfitted for firefighting duty, but for his home swing, it was converted to the baddest Popemobile ever.

The platform rode atop the chassis and remained open to the crowds.  In fact, the design was one developed with the guidance of JPII himself.  Seriously, epic Pope win.

JPII was a busy guy, making tours of many points of the globe to greet the flock.  When he visited Ireland in 1979, the first time a Pope had set foot On that soil, a Ford Transit, of all things, was converted for Pontiff-toting duties.  It was outfitted in the papal colors of yellow and white with a tall cabin with large windows in addition it was fitted witH silk-and-teflon carpet said TO HAVE cost over a thousand dollars a yard.

1966 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SEL; 1967 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SEL

In the 1966 Mercedes 300 SEL, the basic concept of the previous car was retained.  However, the papal seat was set with a sliding mechanism which allowed the Pope to slide to the side, allowing added seating in the rear for a Papal aide.

The 1977 model was more of a Papal limo than a Popemobile, as it was equipped with occasional seating for up to six, in addition to the longer doors and elevated roof line.

1964 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL; 1965 MERCEDES-BENZ 600

Everybody knows you have to roll in style when you visit New York City, so a stretched 1964 Lincoln Continental was in order.  Also customized in the Landaulet style, in this case the Pope's throne seat was equipped with a hand crank which elevated the Pontiff 12 inches into the air so the crowds could get a better look.

The Landaulet version of the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 was delivered to Pope Paul VI. The car was equipped with an enormous folding top as well as a huge set of rear doors and an additional two and three-quarter inches of head room.

1930: MERCEDES BENZ NUERBURG 460, AND 1960:

The 1930 Mercedes-Benz Nürburg 460 is the first car acknowledged as a formal Popemobile, built specifically for Pope Pius XI as a gift from Daimler Benz AG.  The big Benz was equipped with a central rear-mounted throne and custom interior, which the Pope called “a masterpiece of modern engineering.”

The 300D Landaulet was the first new Popemobile in thirty years, with Mercedes spanning the gap during the tumultuous period.  The 300D was stretched some 450 mm, with hard top up front and soft top in the rear layout of the Landaulet body style allowing il Papa to take in the sunshine and wave to the crowds.  This car retained the single-throne seat setup in the rear, but added amenities like air conditioning and a two-way radio to the driver.

Papal Cars and Popemobiles

jalopnik.com/5054965/the-evolution-of-the-popemobile

Being the living incarnation of two thousand years of religious tradition has got to be rough on a guy.  Popes of the modern era have been burdened with the additional task of traveling to tend to the flock, heading out from the confines of the Vatican City to exotic places like Venezuela, Africa and Hamtramck.  Look it up.

Anyway, the task would be insurmountable if not for Poppa's trusty and reliable sidekick, the Popemobile.  Serving duly as a perch from whence to greet the masses â€" and as protection from said masses for the Holy See, the Popemobile has gone through many iterations, some of which you'll have a hard time believing.

Popemobiles come in two varieties.  The locally made, customized versions, often hewn from the host nation's finest home-grown automobile and turned into a rolling vista fit for a king â€" or at least the head of a sovereign nation.

Then there are the official Popemobiles, now the only kind after the attempt on John Paul II's life in 1981.  Some are made for daily open-air service in St. Peter's Square and others are bullet-proof Popequariums which travel with the high pontiff to locations far and wide.

Suttee is different from "bride burning," in which a newly married Indian woman is burned to death by her in-laws for failing to meet demands for a larger dowry, the traditional gift given to the couple by the bride's parents. Thousands of such murders have been reported. In contrast, suttee is a voluntary act, theoretically at least, meant to atone for the couple's sins and ensure their reunion in the afterlife. But horrified Indian feminists say that in practice the suttee victim often had little choice. Sometimes family members, including other women, browbeat her into it; sometimes she was bound or hopped up on drugs. Much of the time even that wasn't enough. It's said music was played at high volume during suttee so no one could hear the widow's screams.

more at http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2386/whats-up-with-those-indian-widows-who-commit-suttee
#28030
No one knows how suttee started, or for that matter where or when. It's not unique to India--widow suicide is known to have occurred among the Egyptians, Chinese, Vikings, and others. Some say its origin on the subcontinent dates back 5,500 years, while others believe it arrived much later, around 1 AD. I've heard Indians deny there's anything specifically Hindu about it, in that it doesn't figure in Hinduism's core texts. Today it's most closely associated with remote villages dominated by the Rajputs.
#28031

What's up with those Indian widows who commit suttee?

Dear Cecil:

What's the deal with suttee? For years I've been hearing that in India, widows are routinely thrown on funeral pyres alive. Is this just propaganda? And if not, is it just unpopular widows that it happens to? Since most men die before women, do all children burn their mom alive as a matter of course? Hindus seem so peaceful!

â€" Mugg Mellish, via the Internet

They do, eh? Then you haven't been reading the newspapers. Suttee, properly known as sati, was officially banned by the British in 1829 but has never been completely stamped out. About 40 cases have been reported since Indian independence in 1947, mostly in the northwest state of Rajasthan, home of the traditional Rajput warrior caste. One instance in 1987 became a cause celebre, with some Indian women, believe it or not, demanding the right to immolate themselves. Gives new meaning to that old Hindu chant, I'm a Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love.
#28032

Though outlawed in India, the archaic and cruel tradition is very much in practice.

The most high-profile sati (or suttee) incident was in Rajasthan in 1987 when 18-year-old Roop Kanwar was burned to death.

The case sparked national and international outrage.

Police charged Roop Kanwar’s father-in-law and brother-in-law with forcing her to sit on the pyre with her husband’s body, but the two men were acquitted by an Indian court in October 1996.

Supervolcanoes

A number of volcanoes around the world are capable of gigantic eruptions unlike anything witnessed in recorded history, dwarfing those of Mount St. Helens, Krakatoa and anything else going back dozens of millennia.  These supervolcanoes can disrupt the world's climate and challenge life globally.  Unlike other threats to mankind, such as cosmic impacts or nuclear attacks, no known strategies exist for averting a super-eruption.

The Sun

The sun is vital to our lives, but it could cause extreme damage to the high technology that humanity is more dependent on than ever.  Solar eruptions in the modern era have disrupted radio communications and power grids, but past events may have been even more powerful, with a storm in 1859 shorting out telegraph wires, causing fires in North America and Europe, and triggering extraordinary auroras â€" the light shows visible near Earth's poles â€" bright enough to read by.

A storm that powerful nowadays would likely have devastating impacts, since our electrical and communications infrastructures are so much more developed, with a recent report from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences finding that one could cause up to $2 trillion in initial damages by paralyzing communications on Earth and fueling chaos around the world.

Nuclear War

Nuclear bombs ushered in decades of fear of Armageddon, and while leaders of countries with nuclear weapons are cooperating to vastly reduce their arsenals, nuclear terrorism still remains an urgent concern, and even a relatively limited nuclear conflict could alter climate and affect the entire globe.

Infection

Infectious diseases have devastated humanity throughout our history.  The Black Death (bubonic plague was the most common form) killed nearly half the people in each of the regions it touched, and malaria, AIDS and other diseases continue to ravage the world today.  As we encroach upon the wilderness, germs once confined to other animals are now jumping species to attack us, such as SARS, avian and swine flu and Ebola.  An even greater threat might come from "superbugs," multidrug-resistant strains that might defeat our best attempts to stop them.  Some say our overuse of antibiotics is driving an increase in these superbugs.

Gamma-Ray Burst

Gamma-ray bursts are the most powerful explosions known in the universe, capable of releasing as much energy as our sun would during its entire 10 billion-year lifetime in anywhere from milliseconds to a minute or more.  A fiery pinwheel in space named WR 104 about 8,000 light-years away could fire one in our direction, potentially causing mass extinctions on Earth.

Cosmic Impact

A catastrophic impact from a comet or asteroid is believed to be the culprit behind the mass extinctions that ended the age of dinosaurs.  Even a relatively small cosmic impact could unleash untold havoc â€" the Tunguska explosion, which mysteriously leveled an area of Siberian forest nearly the size of Tokyo a century ago, might have been caused by an asteroid just 65 feet (20 meters) in diameter.  Still, an early warning system against future cosmic impacts might be possible.

Black Holes

There is widespread paranoia that the world's largest particle smasher, the Large Hadron Collider, will generate planet-gobbling black holes.  Still, even if it can generate black holes, and even if these don't evaporate immediately as theory says they would, and even if these don't immediately go zipping away from Earth given the speed they would be traveling, they would be so tiny that it would take one of them about 100 hours to gobble up one proton.  At that rate, the life sucker would take more than the age of the universe to consume even a milligram of matter.

There are much larger "rogue black holes," hundreds of which are suspected to roam near invisibly around the galaxy.  Still, the closest rogue black hole should reside thousands of light-years away â€" where one light-year is the distance light travels in a year â€" about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers).

Aliens

Aliens have kidnapped, experimented and killed us en masse â€" at least in fiction.  Of course, no extraterrestrials have been revealed to the world at large yet, so as far as we know we are alone in the universe.  If aliens do cross interstellar distances to attack Earth, one wonders if they would really land and let themselves get shot first as movies often depict.  It might be more sensible for them to bombard strategic targets and population centers from orbit first and then, perhaps, descend with robots to mop up.

Doomsday fears

With more and more technologies able to wreak mass destruction, a greater knowledge of what cosmic threats our planet faces, and more forms of media capable of trumpeting Armageddon, it seems as if there is more hype than ever about one supposedly impending apocalypse or another in 2012, despite all the failed doomsday predictions over the years.

Here are 10 apocalyptic scenarios that have raised fears about the end of civilization, in alphabetical order.
