By: Maria Popova

“Friendship: The silent places where speech ends.”

As a longtime fan of artist Nina Katchadourian’s long-running Sorted Books project, which even inspired some playful book spine poetry experiments of my own, I’m thrilled for the release of Sorted Books â€" a collection spanning nearly two decades of her witty and wise minimalist mediations on life by way of ingeniously arranged book spines, including some pieces never seen online.

“We think our Philippine venture is going to be a key contributor to our business,” he added.

“This is definitely a city where people love to enjoy and live life.”

Mr. Ho said he was impressed by Solaire’s offerings during a visit Friday on the eve of its launch, adding the clustering of rivals in a single hub would help both draw more customers.

Mr. Ho expects gaming revenues in the Philippines to triple to $3-billion by 2015, from about $1-billion annually.

“If you project that and extrapolate it even further down the road, the Philippines in five, six years could be effectively the size of Las Vegas or Singapore,” he said, referring to the world’s other major gaming hubs.

As the only one among the planned or existing Manila casinos with a Macau connection, Mr. Ho said Belle Grande would draw more Chinese tourists to the Philippines.

“Ultimately, we do have one of the largest databases in terms of Chinese and also Asian visitors. … I think that’s going to be a significant contributor to our success,” he said.

Mr. Ho said he was not worried about potential fallout from a tense territorial dispute between China and the Philippines over islands and waters in the South China Sea.

“Hopefully these issues will resolve themselves in the near future,” he said.

It is set to open by mid-2014 inside a giant complex along Manila Bay called Entertainment City.

Belle Corp. was one of four firms given franchises by the Philippine government to build gaming resorts worth at least $1-billion each at the 100-hectare site.

The first of the four casinos, the $1.2-billion Solaire, opens for business on Saturday.

After Solaire and Belle Grande, two other casinos â€" one controlled by Japanese tycoon Kazuo Okada and the other by Malaysia’s Genting Group â€" are set to open between 2015 and 2017.

The Philippine government is hoping Entertainment City can draw millions of newly wealthy Asians, boosting tourism and eventually generating up to $10-billion in annual revenues.

“For the next probably 30 to 50 years, the main growth in entertainment and gaming is going to be in Asia,” said Mr. Ho, co-chairman and chief executive of Melco Crown.

Macau mogul Lawrence Ho’s gaming firm signed an agreement Friday to invest $600-million (U.S.) in a giant casino project in Manila, boosting the Philippines’ bid to join the world’s gambling big leagues.

The investment in the Belle Grande integrated gaming resort is Melco Crown Entertainment’s first venture in the casino business outside its Macau base, Mr. Ho told a news conference.

“We’re very excited about our project. We think that the Philippines is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting countries around,” Mr. Ho said before overseeing the signing of the deal with Philippine billionaire Henry Sy.

Mr. Ho’s Melco Crown partner James Packer, an Australian billionaire, was also in Manila for the signing of the joint venture agreement with the Mr. Sy-controlled Belle Corp., which is building the casino.

Tagle also called on Filipinos to join the whole Church in thanking the Lord for giving the world an extraordinary person like Pope Francis.

Tagle expressed his gratitude to those who prayed for the cardinals during the conclave.

“I thank you for your fervent prayers for the cardinal-electors. We never felt alone even for a moment. Your love sustained us,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Jesuit community in the country said they were pleased that a fellow Jesuit became the Pontiff.

Fr. Jose Magdia, SJ, who is the provincial superior of the Society of Jesus (SJ), said, “Pope Francis has a long experience of leading God’s people in Argentina, with a heart very much concerned for the needs of the poor and disadvantaged, and whose manner of life is touched by great simplicity and faith.”

“We are grateful for his generosity and spirit of service to assume the heavy burden that goes with his office in these difficult times. We certainly pledge him our prayers and filial support, and wish him grace, wisdom and strength as he assumes this new mission,” said Magdia.

Magdia said the 76-year-old pope is a Jesuit but the spirituality of St. Ignatius was only secondary.

What is more important was “his own deep commitment to the Lord and his having remained a loyal son of Christ’s Church, giving so much of his long life to making it an instrument of truth and clarity for all,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines - Pope Francis has good wishes for Asia’s only predominantly Catholic nation.

“I have high hopes for the Philippines. May your faith prosper, as well as your devotion to Our Lady and mission to the poor,” the first Latin American pope reportedly conveyed to Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle.

In a statement, Tagle yesterday said he had the opportunity to meet and talk with the new pope at the Vatican.

Tagle said when he approached Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, to assure him of the closeness and collaboration of the Filipinos with the Vatican, the Holy Father gave him the message to the Filipino people.

“What a compelling message from this humble man of God,” Tagle added.

Tagle grew up in his parent’s two-story house in Poblacion 1-C, within walking distance to the cathedral. At the back of the main house, the Tagle couple built houses for each of their sons where they stayed whenever they came home to visit.

On Tuesday, the house whose front yard Manuel Sr. swept every morning and which Milagros kept open to people every Christmas Day was closed to visitors. Only the housekeeper, Delia, was left to watch over the house when the couple left for Vatican City on Friday.

Ignacio, who owns a beauty salon across from the Tagle home, is a member of  Apostolado ng Panalangin, a religious organization,  giving her the opportunity to work with Tagle for a long time.

She has kept the pictures, as well as newsletters and magazines that featured Tagle, including one with the cardinal’s autograph.

Ignacio said Tagle, who calls her “Ti Vicky,” short for Auntie Vicky, was like a son to her. She said Tagle grew into a fine man who never lost his sense of humor.

When Tagle celebrated his 50th birthday, she said she gave him a kiss. “Then he told me,  ‘now I feel like a Sto. Niño,’” she said.

Ignacio said Tagle always had the “charisma that encourages people to hear Mass and understand the homily.” (With a report from Inquirer Research)

According to Arevalo, he got a job as an assistant at the university’s library but because Tagle did not introduce himself as a priest, he was assigned to do the “dirty work.”

Tagle is also one of the country’s media-savvy prelates. He started hosting a Sunday gospel show on TV a few years ago where he preached and answered questions. He has a Facebook page with more than 120,000 followers.

Tagle, however, remained a “low-key”  figure even after his name was mentioned as one of those who could be Pope, following the resignation from the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI last month.

“Even when he was already a bishop, we would still see him walk alone to church, always carrying a leather bag,” said his cousin.

He said he respected the family’s request to keep a low profile during the papal conclave, as his “Kuya” Chito never wanted the fanfare and publicity in the first place.
#28058
A priest who had great affection for Tagle tricked him into taking the entrance exam for  Jesuit-run San Jose Seminary in Quezon City instead of taking the entrance exam for Ateneo, Arevalo narrated.

Tagle passed the exam with very high marks, got a scholarship and then entered the seminary to try it and see,  Arevalo added.

Today, Tagle, the second-youngest member of the College of Cardinals, has been dubbed the “Great Asian Hope,” “Rising Star” and “Golden Child.”

The 55-year-old cardinal from a working-class family has a reputation across the country as a humble man.

He exemplified humility even when he was pursuing his graduate studies. Tagle had to take on a menial job when his scholarship fund dried up while he was studying in the United States in the early 1990s.

He ran out of funds when Fr. Carl Peter, a prominent American theologian who obtained the scholarship for him, died during his last year of graduate studies at Catholic University of America in Washington.

As a young boy, Tagle used to tag along with his mother when she would hear Mass at  Our Lady of the Pillar Cathedral in Imus.

Relatives would marvel at the young boy’s ability to recite the rosary at the age of 3.

“He rarely played with us because he preferred staying at home and reading books,” said the cousin, who asked not to be identified.

He doesn’t remember if Chito had a crush on a girl in his hometown.

Born in Manila on June 21, 1957, Tagle is one of  two sons of Manuel and Milagros Tagle. His younger brother, Manuel Jr. or Nonoy, has migrated to the United States.
The people who have known him when he was growing up were not entirely surprised when Tagle decided to enter the priesthood.

On July 18, 1981, Tagle was ordained at San Jose Seminary in Quezon City. He became the bishop of Imus on Dec. 12, 2001, and was installed archbishop of Manila exactly 10 years later. Tagle was elevated to the College of Cardinals on Nov. 24, 2012.

Although religious as a child, Tagle never planned to become a priest until he became “victim” of a “trick” that led him to priesthood.

He wanted to go to Ateneo de Manila University but his parents were worried about the cost of enrolling in the Jesuit institution and living in a boarding house, said Fr. Catalino Arevalo, SJ, the “dean” of Filipino theologians and a friend of Tagle.
#28060
Tagle’s newly gained “international stature” for being considered a “papabile” in the conclave that elected Argentine Jorge Cardinal Bergoglio as the new Pope bodes well for the Church in the Philippines, an activist priest said.
Even if he was not elected Pope, “Chito (Tagle’s nickname) has reached an international stature [that gives him] an opportunity to bring fresh air to the Philippine Catholic Church,” said Fr. Robert Reyes.

Reyes and Tagle were classmates at San Jose Seminary in Quezon City.

Reyes, interviewed a day before it was known that a new Pope had been elected, said Tagle had that “sense of humor that can heal broken  priests.”

“He will not condemn you, make you feel you’re such a bad person or you’re beyond redemption, but he will give you hope. That’s what we need right now,” said Reyes, known as the running priest.

He said he and Tagle might not be in agreement on certain issues, like the reproductive health law, but they did not “adversely” react to each other.

In one of the alumni homecomings in the seminary, Reyes remembered Tagle as saying: “Robert and I are quite different. I’m the flying bishop, most of  the time in my luggage flying from one meeting to another, while Robert keeps running.”

Reyes earned the  “running priest” moniker because he used running events to dramatize his political and environmental advocacies.

The priest said Tagle’s return from Vatican City would be an opportunity for the prelate to lift the morale of Filipino Catholics.

The Catholic Church is a “broken Church” faced with several abuse scandals and cases of priests violating their vows of celibacy, said Reyes.

“It’s a wounded and a wounding Church,” he said.

SAN PABLO CITYâ€"People who personally knew Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle in his hometown, Imus City in Cavite, said they supported the cardinal although he was not elected Pope.

“Manalo o matalo (Win or lose), it’s God’s will,” said 69-year-old Vicky Ignacio, a worker at Imus Cathedral who had treated Tagle like her own son.

Tagle’s cousin, who refused to be named when interviewed in Imus, said Tagle might not be the Pope right now, “but has all the chances of becoming one someday, not only because he is young.”

“We’re sure he’ll make a good Pope. He stands firm on issues like the RH (reproductive health law) and the sex scandals, but was never confrontational. He is more ‘evangelical,’” the cousin said.

Relatives had wished Tagle would become a Pope but were afraid of not seeing him as often as they do now. “Just imagine, he’ll be attending to the whole world,” the cousin said.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: A golden possibility

In the days leading to the secret balloting at the Sistine Chapel, Vatican insiders said the Cardinals would vote according to their conscience. Nobody ruled out the power play, vested interests and Machiavellian maneuvers to get the two-thirds vote to elect the new pope.

According to press reports, the conclave was divided between those who worked in the Vatican and the reformers, who wanted the next Pope to address the corruption, inefficiency and reluctance of those in the Vatican to share power and information with bishops from around the world.

Analysts said they would  not be surprised if members of a powerful faction, the so-called Benedict faction, who owe their red hats to the resigned pope, would pull a surprise because they made up more than half of the voters. Nobody knows, as yet, whether some of these predictions came to pass.

Tagle has gained a reputation in the Vatican as “a man of the people,” a good theologian who was close to Benedict. Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani said the country would explode with joy if Tagle emerged on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica when the cardinals declare “Habemus Papam (We have a pope) and white smoke billowed out of the chimney on top the Sistine Chapel.

But it was not Tagle’s time to wear the white robe and red shoes.

Nonetheless, Filipinos savored the mere possibility. These moments will go down in Philippine history as the year when a Filipino cardinal almost became a pope.

Inspiration & Hope / A golden possibility

By Manila Standard Today | Posted on Mar. 16, 2013 at 12:01am

It was good while it lasted.

More than that, it was almost like a miracle. Hope burned in the hearts of Filipino Roman Catholics, and they stormed the heavens with prayer. A Filipino cardinal almost became the leader of 1.2 billion Catholics all over the world.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the 55-year-old Archbishop of Manila and the second youngest papabile, could have become the first pope from Southeast Asia.

It was good enough that a Filipino was a papabile among the 115 cardinals from various parts of the world who converged in Rome for the conclave to elect the successor of Pope Benedict XVI. This brought considerable honor to the country.

The possibility of a Filipino becoming pope stirred pride in the hearts of many Filipinos, and many Catholics hope it could lead to some kind of renewal for the highly politicized church.

In November last year, however, the UP Manila administration barred students who failed to pay their tuition on time from attending classes.

After a dialogue with UP officials, the “no late payment policy” was eased.

By that time, however, some students had already been forced to go on leave, according to reports from the Office of the Student Regent.

UP students condemned the university policy and held simultaneous candle lighting ceremonies for Tejada yesterday afternoon at UP campuses in Manila, Quezon City, Baguio and Mindanao.

“We mourn the death of Kristel Tejada. Filipino students and youth like Kristel do not deserve this,” said Mariz Zubiri, newly elected chair of the UP Manila student council.

She said they condemned “to the highest degree” the “anti-student policies” of UP Manila and the Aquino administration for forcing students to stay out of school and take their own lives.

Zubiri said the socialized payment scheme was used as a smokescreen for tuition increases.

“Kristel is just one of the hundreds and thousands of UP and Filipino students who are pushed against the wall by the high cost of education and the Aquino administration’s abandonment of Philippine education,” Zubiri said. â€" With Rainier Allan Ronda

Professor Andrea Martinez, Tejada’s program adviser, said the girl had been depressed since going on forced leave.

“We were able to talk via SMS and she told me that her filing of LOA really had a big impact on her and their family,” Martinez was quoted by the student publication Philippine Collegian as saying.

Tuition is subsidized at the state university, where students are called “iskolar ng bayan” or nation’s scholars.

Under a socialized tuition and financial assistance program, UP students from low-income families are classified through a bracketing system.

Those who fall under Bracket A pay P1,500 per unit; Bracket B students pay P1,000; Bracket C, P600, and Bracket D, P300. Students under Bracket E are exempted from tuition.

The financial assistance office evaluates applications and conducts random house visits to verify income declarations.

Tejada was classified under Bracket D. With a regular load of 18 units plus miscellaneous fees, her average tuition for one semester can amount to P7,500.

Her mother, a housewife, said they could not pay the P10,000 since the family depended on the meager income of her husband, a part-time taxi driver.

Tejada, the eldest of a brood of five, wanted to finish her degree without delay to be able to help provide for the family’s needs.

UP student kills self over tuition
By Edu Punay (The Philippine Star) | Updated March 16, 2013 - 1:00am

MANILA, Philippines - She just wanted to finish her studies and help her four siblings.

Kristel Tejada, however, still owed P10,000 in tuition for this semester at the University of the Philippines in Manila, where the 16-year-old was a behavioral science freshman.

She asked for a tuition loan or installment payment and offered a promissory note.

When these were all turned down, Tejada’s mother, according to some reports, even knelt before UP Manila Chancellor Manuel Agudo and begged that her daughter be allowed to continue attending her classes.

When that still didn’t work, Tejada was forced to file a forced leave of absence (LOA) earlier this week.

At around 3 a.m. yesterday, the despondent girl drank silver cleaner at their home in Tondo. She was rushed to the Metropolitan Medical Center but emergency teams failed to revive her.
