Answer:

Most Catholics are thrown off by this question and answer hesitantly at best. This leads Fundamentalists to assume that Catholics haven't been born again.

But they are wrong. All baptized Catholics have been born again, so you can answer "yes." Discussion no doubt will follow.

A good way to start is to admit the importance of being born again. Jesus commands it (Jn 3:3,7). To be born again implies a radical change in a person, an event as life-altering as the "first birth" out of your mother's womb. When you are born again, the Holy Spirit makes a change in your soul, cleanses you from sin, and gives you a new nature, planting supernatural love in your heart. Just as you were once born into an earthly family, when you are born again you become part of a spiritual family, with God as the head and all his people, on earth and in heaven, as your brothers and sisters.

Once in agreement on what "born again" means, proceed to the point of disagreement: how we are born again. Probably the Fundamentalist will posit some kind of spiritual experience, a moment of commitment to Jesus, an acceptance of him as "personal Lord and Savior." But Catholics use the biblical means of being born again: baptism.

Jesus told Nicodemus, "No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit" (Jn 3:5). Paul spoke of God's gift of "the bath of rebirth and renewal of the Holy Spirit" (Ti 3:5). Paul told the Romans that "we who were baptize into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death . . . so that . . . we too might live in the newness of life" (Rom 6:3-4). Water baptism is the physical sign of and instrument for bringing about the spiritual rebirth. In baptism we are regenerated into new life in Christ.

So answer door-to-door missionaries with a proud affirmative--if you have been baptized, you already have been saved the Bible way and in the way the first Christians understood "born again."

Answer:

The Catholic Church entrusts all children (from the moment of conception) who die without baptism to God’s mercy in hope of their salvation. There is no distinction between children already born and those still in the womb.

"Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness toward children which caused him to say: ‘Let the children come to me, do not hinder them,’ allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism" (CCC 1261).

Answer:

The invitation to accept Jesus as one’s personal Savior has a specific meaning in certain Protestant circles. For them, accepting Jesus as one’s personal Savior is how one becomes a Christian. It is being born again. At this juncture they consider themselves "saved," and this holds despite any future sins they may commit.

As Catholics, we believe that the process of salvation begins at baptism, continues by the way we live, and is complete only when we are judged at the end of our lives. We believe that it is through baptism that we become members of Christ.

While we don’t have an altar call, as they refer to it, the Mass is full of invitations. For example, just before the preface, the priest invites the people to "Lift up your hearts," adding, "Let us give thanks to the Lord our God." At one point he takes the host in his hands and he says: "This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper." Talk about invitations!

Communion itself is an invitation to receive the whole Christ, not just into our hearts but into our whole being, body and soul. There is nothing on the face of the earth that can equal this. Unfortunately, so many Catholics are ignorant of what they have.

Question and Answer / Re: Is God's name Yahweh or Jehovah?
September 19, 2013, 02:45:27 PM
Answer:

In Hebrew the name of God is spelled YHWH. Since ancient Hebrew had no written vowels, it is uncertain how the name was pronounced originally, but there are records of the name in Greek, which did have written vowels. These records indicate that in all likelihood the name should be pronounced "Yahweh."

Shortly before the first century A.D., it became common for Jews to avoid saying the divine name for fear of misusing it and breaking the second commandment ("You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain," Dt 5:11). Whenever they read Scripture aloud and encountered the divine name, they substituted another Hebrew word, "Adonai" (which means "Lord" or "my Lord"), in its place.

Eventually Hebrew developed written vowels, which appeared as small marks called vowel points and were placed above and below the consonants of a word. In the sixth or seventh century some Jews began to place the vowel points for "Adonai" over the consonants for "Yahweh" to remind the reader of Scripture to say "Adonai" whenever he read "Yahweh."

About the 13th century the term "Jehovah" appeared when Christian scholars took the consonants of "Yahweh" and pronounced it with the vowels of "Adonai." This resulted in the sound "Yahowah," which has a Latinized spelling of "Jehovah." The first recorded use of this spelling was made by a Spanish Dominican monk, Raymundus Martini, in 1270.

Interestingly, this fact is admitted in much Jehovah's Witness literature, such as their Aid to Bible Understanding (p. 885). This is surprising because Jehovah's Witnesses loathe the Catholic Church and have done everything in their power to strip their church of traces of Catholicism. Despite this, their group's very name contains a Catholic "invention," the name "Jehovah."

Jehovah's Witnesses blast orthodox Christendom for "hiding the name of God" by replacing "Jehovah" with "the Lord" whenever "Jehovah" appears in Scripture. They charge this is a Jewish "superstition" that dishonors God (which it does not). Yet their own organization has a name that was invented as a result of the same thinking that produced use of "the Lord."

Question and Answer / Re: Who were the Philistines?
September 19, 2013, 12:11:42 PM
The Philistines are referred to as the descendants of the Casluchim in Genesis 10:14 and Exodus 13:17. Known as a seafaring nation, the Philistines were a non-Semitic people who left Crete and arrived in Canaan at the beginning of the 12th century B.C.E. The Philistines inhabited the Mediterranean coast of Canaan during the period of the Book of Judges. They founded five principalities - Gaza, Asheklon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath.

Their highly-developed weapons brought a great threat to the Israelites. During the Exodus from Egypt, the Israelites purposely took a southern route to circumvent them. The Philistines often battled against the Israelites. The first King of Israel, Saul, temporarily weakened them. Later, a little-known shepherd by the name of David (later second King of Israel) defeated them after his battle with the large Philistine by the name of Goliath. The Philistines were reduced to mainly commercial ventures rather than military ventures. Throughout the Books of Kings, different Jewish leaders fought the nation until the Assyrians completely defeated them. The Philistines then assimilated into the surrounding cultures and ceased to exist as a separate nation.

The name Palestine originates from the Philistine inhabitance of the land of Judea. After the Romans conquered the region in the second century C.E., the Romans used the term Palestinia to refer to the region in an attempt to minimize Jewish attachment to the land. The Arabic use of the term Filastin is from this Latin root.

you're right. some things, i guess, never change.

its amazing to think that some 2 thousand years ago, the archangel gabriel, in his glorious appearance, appeared to the shepherds at night and encouraged them to visit newborn baby Jesus in nazareth.

i wonder how it was like to have seen an archangel appear in glorious and resplendent rays. were they scared and dropped to the ground like what tobias did when he found out that raphael was an angel?

i wonder how it was like to have seen the baby Jesus. the lord of the universe made incarnate. those shepherds, who witnessed those things, were graced to have seen Him.

we can only imagine or read about it in Scripture. i wonder how it was like to actually witness it in person.

what infuriates me is that the mother fakking corrupt politicians the likes of jinggoy estrada , enrile and lowlife scum like napoles have the gall to steal billions of pesos from the people. instead of putting money into their dirty mother fakking pockets, they should divert money for the proper funding of the armed forces. buy more fighter jets for the air force, more kevlar vests for our infantrymen, more ships for the navy. better training for paramilitary units to track down and exterminate terrorists and terrorist cells in the country.

but no. mother fakking politicians who don't know how to run the country continue to get re-elected and divert funds to their pockets.

the country must learn from this mistake.

this situation in zamboanga could have been prevented. the problem stems back to government's spineless policy in regards to dealing with separatists elements in the south. do not negotiate with terrorists period. pulverize and eradicate the milf, mnlf. enough of this armm, it is a failure anyways. these people do not use funds to build infrastructure in armm, but use funds to buy guns and maintain these mini armies. there can only be one army in the philippines; and that is the philippine army.

i pray we can rise from this situation.

The use of LATIN was a factor in the Roman tendency to shorten the prayers, leave out whatever seemed redundant in formulas, and abridge the whole service.

LATIN is naturally TERSE, compared with the rhetorical abundance of GREEK.

This difference is one of the most obvious distinctions between the Roman and the Eastern Rites.

The beginnings of the Roman Mass are found in the writings of St. Justin (150 AD) and St. Hippolytus (215 AD).

LATIN finally replaced GREEK as the official language of the Empire. By the year 250 AD, the Mass was being said in Latin throughout most of the Roman world.

The Church in the western empire adopted Latin for the Mass by 380 AD. The Latin Canon as we know it was finished by 399 AD. Latin ceased to be a vernacular language between the 7th and 9th centuries.

When the Church had spread to the Gentile world, about the year 100 AD it adopted the GREEK tongue for the liturgy because it was the common language of the Roman Empire.

Use of the Greek language continued throughout the second and into part of the third centuries.

The Kyrie eleison is a remnant of Greek which survives in the Latin Mass.

And the liturgical symbol IHS is a derivative of the Greek word for Jesus.

The Mass was originally said in ARAMAIC or HEBREW since these were the languages which Christ and the Apostles spoke.

The words AMEN, ALLELUIA, HOSANNA, and SABBAOTH are Aramaic words which were retained and are still found in the Latin Mass [Tridentine Rite] of today.

As Pope Pius XII explained, “The use of the LATIN language... is a manifest and beautiful SIGN OF UNITY, as well as an EFFECTIVE ANTIDOTE for any corruption of doctrinal truth”.

The True [Authentic & Licit] Traditional Catholic Mass is offered in LATIN because LATIN is a “DEAD” language.

As it is no longer spoken as the vernacular language in any country today, so, LATIN words DO NOT CHANGE IN MEANING.

The English language we speak may be easier to understand, but because of slang, colloquialisms and various local influences, the words we use vary in their meanings from place to place and year to year.

St. Francis de Sales (1567- 1622), a Doctor of the Church, gives us another example of the high regard which Heaven reserves for the priesthood.  He once saw a young seminarian being accompanied by his guardian angel.

After the young man's ordination, Saint Francis de Sales saw the angel  walking behind the priest, in respect and reverence for his priestly dignity.
