But isn't pampering our bodies (which yoga does, bodyguarded with a mumbo-jumbo religious stance to boot)intrinsically adversarial to our faith?

:-\

is ballet body pampering?

is ballet (yoga) and its music (mumbo-jumbo) adversarial to our faith? ;D

oh, we take food supplements to keep our bodies and minds healthy, which yoga does.  why must we take the former, which makes a pharmacy out of our stomachs, as fine with religion while the latter, which is just a form of discipline, is contrary?  we're giving yoga too much credit.

Pepsi Introduces Fat-Blocking Soda

By Akiko Fujita | ABC News Blogs
13 November 2012

Soda and healthy aren't exactly synonymous, but Pepsi-Cola in Japan is trying to change that with a new fiber-infused drink.

Dubbed the "Pepsi Special," the soft drink set to go on sale Tuesday contains dextrin, a fiber that distributor Suntory claims helps reduce fat levels in the body.

Eager to appeal to young, health-conscious men, Pepsi has put out a comical ad on its website showing a businessman trying to chose between a woman dressed in a pizza costume and another in a burger outfit. The message - you don't have to give up either, if you drink the Pepsi Special.

Odd-flavored drinks are not unique in Japan's $48 billion a year soft-drink market. Past Pepsi flavors include strawberry and milk, salty watermelon, and yogurt, to name a few.

This is Pepsi's first venture into the healthy cola market. Rival Kirin, better known for its beer, released its own sugar-free, dextrin soda this summer: the "Mets" cola.

Question and Answer / Re: Is Yoga contrary to our faith?
November 13, 2012, 09:09:23 PM
yoga, in fact, may even enhance one's religion for some people.  it could help one's mind get more focused when one prays.  there are even those who can attest that they can pray more sincerely, more meditatively, after they learned yoga.

it is when one replaces one's religion with yoga, or when it becomes one's religion, that the context of the practice is changed.  bodybuilders just can't make religion out of bodybuilding, right?
#27920
Question and Answer / Re: Is Yoga contrary to our faith?
November 13, 2012, 09:08:22 PM
it is not.  yoga in its simplest context is nothing but a stress-relieving exercise.  its "unnecessary offshoots" (i.e., the philosophies mouthed by gurus, yogis, transcendental meditators, new-age advocates, etc.)are the ones that open the practice to being misunderstood as a threat to religion.  it's like saying that being a gym rat or an olympian is going against religion because these emphasize only physical development and victories.

Girls, be careful, or you may end up like this girl who got so drunk, she couldn't stop a guy from groping her in public.

"It went on for quite a while until we called the bouncers to stop their obscene behaviour," said a witness.

"When the bouncers came over, they shone a light at the guy, but he continued what he was doing. When the bouncers eventually escorted the guy and girl out of the club, the girl was so drunk, she couldn't even walk properly."

Two drunk men made it into the news when they caused a disturbance at Pioneer MRT Station.

One man passed out on the floor and the other tried to attack SMRT staff.

Responding to a media enquiry, the police said were notified of the drunkards at about 7.05pm. Upon arrival, they encountered a 36-year-old man who was "behaving aggressively and tried to attack SMRT staff". The man was arrested for disorderly behaviour.

The other man, who was in his mid-40s, had passed out due to excessive alcohol consumption, and was conveyed to a hospital.

Strange things Singaporeans do when they are drunk

Ever passed out from drinking too much and woken up in a strange environment - sometimes with a strange outfit and in an even stranger position? These people have.

From defecating outside clubs to falling asleep on toilet seats with their pants down, Singaporeans get up to all sorts of hilarious antics when they are drunk.

The humilation may run deep in these people, but the consolation is that they won't know it until they have awoken from their drunken stupors.

"Meet Bolaji Badejo, the man inside the suit of the original 1979 Alien. According to IMDB's trivia section, he stands at 7' 2", and was not originally an actor, but a design student who was discovered at a bar.  Ridley Scott wanted someone unusually tall so as to make the suspension of disbelief more natural, and Badejo fit the bill. Of note, is that this role seems to have been Badejo's only real stint in the acting world, and there is little to no information about his life after Alien (save for rumor) to be found on the internet."

General Topic / Re: How does the Queen answer the phone?
November 12, 2012, 11:16:32 PM
And in 2007, when the Queen asked for their help in setting up voicemail on her cellphone, Prince William and Prince Harry prankishly recorded, “Wassup! This is Liz. Sorry I’m away from the throne.  For a hotline to Philip, press one. For Charles, press two. And for the corgis, press three.”  Her Majesty is said to have been a good sport when she learned what the young royals had done.  (“Prince Albert in a can” jokes probably wouldn’t have gone over quite so well).

The British monarch does have what historian Robert Lacey calls a “dry and slightly mordant sense of humor,” and has in recent years developed a stock line for whenever the cellphone of a visitor goes off: "You'd better answer that.  It might be someone important."

Ouch. My advice is, next time you’re invited to Buck House for tea and crumpets, mute your phone.  Or better yet, just leave it at home.

A bit formal, but appropriate for the occasion.  Still, it must be said that the Royal Family has had some fun with phones over the years.

King George V, Elizabeth II’s grandfather, and his younger sister Princess Victoria often spoke by telephone.  She once began the conversation with “Hello, you old fool,” only to be interrupted by the operator: “Beg pardon, Your Royal Highness; His Majesty is not yet on the line.”

Many years later, “When the Queen placed a call to her mother,” biographer Sally Bedell Smith writes, “the Palace operator said to her mother, ‘Good morning, Your Majesty, Her Majesty is on the line for Your Majesty,’ which became a standing joke among friends and courtiers.”

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, tells me that, at most other times, “When the Queen answers her phone she says 'Yes' to the caller, who will be a member of the Royal Household or a telephonist wanting to put through a member of her family or a friend.”

In 1958, the Queen made the first British long-distance telephone call without the assistance of an operator.  She began her call to Edinburgh by saying, "This is the Queen speaking from Bristol.  Good afternoon, my Lord Provost."

Or thinks she does, at least.  In October 1995, Montreal comedian and radio personality Pierre Brassard managed to get past the royal switchboard by pretending to be then-Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.  When the Queen came on the line, she simply said, “Hi, Prime Minister!”  After beginning the conversation in English, Brassard asked if they might speak in French.  The Queen immediately agreed (“Oui, bon”), and spoke in “impeccable” French for several more minutes about an upcoming referendum on Quebec independence.  Although her courtiers were not amused, when she spoke to the actual â€" and very apologetic â€" Chrétien a few days later, she joked, "I thought your voice sounded slightly different, but I thought it might just have been because you were drunk."

SDSTAFF Elendil’s Heir replies:

You’d hardly expect her to say “This is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of my other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith speaking” every time she picks up, would you?  The poor woman would never get anything done.

Instead, as you might expect, the Queen (now celebrating her 60th year on the British throne) answers the telephone in different ways at different times.  You’re right that she typically has calls put through, and knows to whom she’ll be speaking beforehand.

How does the Queen answer the phone?[/b]

October 30, 2012

Dear Straight Dope:

A friend and I once tried to figure out how Queen Elizabeth II answers her phone.  Now, obviously, someone else answers it first and they patch the caller through to Her Majesty if appropriate.  But!  She has to announce her presence once she picks up, no?  She can't just lift the receiver to her ear and remain silent.  So what does she say?

The unnamed plaintiff, from Dortmund, argues that the pope was seen several times during the visit without a seat belt.  The complaint offers several eyewitnesses, including the archbishop of Freiburg, the head of the German Conference of Bishops and the premier of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, where Freiburg sits.

The complaint refers to a “Mr. Joseph Ratzinger” â€" the German-born pope’s given name â€" and sightings of him on Sept. 24 and 25 riding in a vehicle without a seat belt “for more than an hour.”

Sundermann’s office has also entered a YouTube clip of the visit, which shows Benedict touring in a German-made Mercedes-Benz popemobile without a seat belt, as possible evidence.

Just because the pope gets to ride in the popemobile doesn’t give him license not to wear a seat belt.

So says an unnamed German man who filed charges against Pope Benedict XVI for allegedly failing to use a seat belt while touring Germany on an official visit in September.

Attorney Christian Sundermann confirmed that the complaint was filed with authorities in Freiburg, the southern German city that was Benedict’s last stop during his German visit, according to the newspaper Der Westen.

Poland's Press Photo of the Year (2011) was organised by the Press Photography Club, itself affiliated to the Association of Polish Journalists (SDP). (nh/pg)

“On that day the cardinal was surrounded by journalists and photographers,” Lasyk revealed in an interview with the Polish Press Agency.

“I didn't want them in the frame, so I overtook the cardinal,” he said.

“When I saw the dog, I decided to wait and integrate it into the photograph."

The jury itself immediately warmed to the picture.

Cardinal and dog triumph in Polish Press Photo Awards

08.03.2012

A photograph of Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz doffing his skullcap to a nervous dog has won first prize in the Polish Press Photo of the Year contest.

The image was taken by Marek Lasyk from the Reporter Agency on 9 October, 2011, the day of Poland's general elections.

Cardinal Dziwisz, who was secretary to the late Pope John Paul II, and is currently Archbishop of Krakow, was returning from a polling station when the photograph was taken.

the sarao-made popemobile as used in baguio city:

(i wonder who's driving; it musn't be the future senator panfilo lacson!)

(jaime cardinal sin was a seated passenger!  note: if i got it right, the one standing next to this beloved of popes is a close-in security blackbelter cardinal... i don't know how true.  it's a story of my older brother who's fond of inventing great stories...)

Sarao Motors is a Jeepney assembly plant that produced the customized popemobile used by Pope John Paul II in 1981.

The Filipino Popemobile

The Popemobile, is an informal name for the specially and certainly the most eminent vehicle in the world.  It transports the Pope to his numerous destinations and outdoor appearances.

Uncovered Popemobiles are most frequently used for events inside Saint Peter’s Square.  The vehicles are designed to protect the Pope at the same time as allowing him to be visible to the crowds.

The Philippines automobile manufacturer Francisco Motors produced the custom Popemobile for the 1995 Papal visit.  It was paid for by voluntary contributions from the private sector, and as with the Irish vehicle had bulletproof windows, bombproof parts, and it was inspected by the Swiss Guards.

The Popemobile surrounded by Men In Black at St. Peter's Square.  The Pope regularly addresses huge crowds from different countries, and blesses them in their native language (French, Italian, English, German, Portuguese).

Left, another view of the current Popemobile for in-house use; right, the clunky GMC Sierra used for the Corpus Domini processions since 1984.  It was first used for John Paul II's travels during a visit to Canada in 1984.

2007 MERCEDES-BENZ G500

That Fiat didn't have a terribly long run, as it was supplanted by a far more stylish Merecedes G500 at the end of 2007.  This one is the first that can be converted from open-air duty to enclosed bullet-proof class as well.

In 2007, the Vatican unveiled the open-top Mercedes-Benz G-Class for papal use in St. Peter's Square.  It was created over a two-year development period in close consultation with the Vatican for fine-weather use.

It is equipped with a folding windscreen and hand-rails, and like its predecessors it is painted in 'Vaticanmystic white'.  The interior is white, and is accessed via steps lined in red at the rear.

2004 FIAT CAMPAGNOLA

In his last years, John Paul II used a Fiat open-top SUV for transit within Vatican City, primarily during events at St. Peter's Square, usually accompanied by a phalanx of burly security guards.

1999 MEXICO BUS; 2002 MERCEDES ML430

In a visit to Mexico during 1999, JPII rode in a glassed-up bus through unprecedented crowds of onlookers.  Following his death in 2005, this Popemobile was put on permanent display in Mexico City at the Basilica of Guadalupe, where the faithful made pilgrimages to pay respect in lieu of a trip to Vatican City.

The thoroughly modern Mercedes ML 430 Popequarium has been the standard bearer until recently.  The fully enclosed, bullet-proof, air-conditioned, platformed car served major duty during the last years of John Paul II.

1982 LEYLAND 4-TON; 1985 MERCEDES 500 SEL; 1997 MERCEDES S500 LWB

This most massive of Popemobiles was built by Leyland Truck for the Pope's visit to Scotland as well as additional travels around the UK in 1982.  The 24-ton monster has a cool glass room at the top of the vehicle and logged 11,000 miles during its services.  Our personal favorite of the Popemobiles was donated to the British Commercial Vehicle Museum, in Leyland, Lancashire in 1988, but was sold at auction in 2006 for the bargain price of $70,000.

The Vatican’s fleet of limo-style Popemobiles grew in 1985 with the inclusion of the first fully armored car, a Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL.  Just because it was armored doesn't mean it wasn't crowd-friendly.  The sunroof opened, a windscreen elevated, and the floor lifted to a platform position below to allow the Pontiff to do his crowd-waving thing.  This car is actually still in use and ferries Pope Benedict XVI during official outings.

In 1997, a new papal limousine was a thoroughly updated Landaulet Mercedes S500 LWB, complete with electro-hydraulic top, two rear-facing occasional seats, and a center-mounted throne which can power-elevate half a meter when the top is down.

1982 SEAT; 1982 RANGE ROVER

The Spanish Papamóvil in 1982 was an all-open-air Seat designed with a grab handle in front so El Papa could stand and greet the crowds.  This may also be the smallest Popemobile ever.

The first bullet-proof Popemobile was built following the first assassination attempt on John Paul II in 1981.  A Range Rover 230G was adapted, with the cabin enclosed in bulletproof glass for a visit to the UK in 1982.
