"He is a wonderful man. He is a very giving man to his children, to his family, to people that need it. He is a very generous, giving man," she said. "Can you blame me for living with him for 80 years?"

To the later generations of children and grandchildren, the Betars serve as role models for how to live and love in life.

"I'm always blown away by their incredible optimism, deep sense of compassion and modesty," said granddaughter Heather Mitchell of Fairfield, Conn. "They are true beacons -- inspirational people who emit such joy without even knowing it."

Celebrating 80 Years of Marriage

On Sunday, the couple will mark their 80th wedding anniversary with a quiet celebration surrounded by family and friends at the St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bridgeport, where they are original founding members.

Ann said one of her daughters ordered a cake for the occasion and the baker called back, slightly confused, to confirm that it should read -- "Happy 80th Anniversary" instead of "Happy 80th Birthday."

After eighty years, Betar is still sweet on his bride and she is still sweet on him.
#27609
"You know what your commitments are and you try to live by them and understand one another. If you don't hold a grudge, you can face anything," Ann said.

The couple still lives independently on the beach in Fairfield and has kept active, pushing the boundaries of aging. In their later years, Ann discovered a hidden talent as an artist and took up painting in oils and watercolors. The two cook soup together, always from scratch. (The retired fruit peddler-turned-grocer continues to make outings to shop for the best produce and can't help but dispense recommendations to fellow customers at the store, his daughter reports, saying: "Oh no, don't buy that tomato if you want to eat it tonight.") They spend their days reading and proudly keeping up with what's going on in the world.
#27610
"They have this wonderful ability to accept life as it comes," their daughter Renee Betar said. "They have a way of trying to look around at the things that they do have -- the family and the blessings. They came from a generation where there is such respect for each other and caring."

The Betars consider themselves "fortunate." Hesitant to dole out advice to newlyweds, they each offered simple, guiding mantras to a lasting marriage.

"Get along. Compromise. Live within your means and be content," Betar said, before adding, "And let your wife be the boss."

"We don't have bosses," she said. Her advice: don't hold a grudge.
#27611
"The hardest thing in our life was losing two of our children. That's the sad part. It's one of the worst thing a parent can face is losing a child, no matter how old they are or how young they are," Ann said.

But despite the trying moments that can test or break a marriage, the two have stayed together.

"There are so many things in a lifetime that can make you very, very happy and very, very sad, but if you can do it together then it's happiness," Ann said.

That's easier said than done for many couples today in the U.S. where the divorce rate hovers around 40 to 50 percent. What's their secret?
#27612
Five children spawned 14 grandchildren and 16 great children. The couple said the later generations "bring new life" and light into their lives.

"Last year at [John's] 100th birthday party ... there was group of little 2 year olds and 5 year olds and a group that's just turning 19 and 20," Ann recalled. "We had it at the beach and we had fireworks. It was very special. The younger children went out on the beach and wrote 'Happy Birthday Jiddo,' [Grandpa in Arabic], in the sand, all along the beach. ... How can you not feel God's right with you and blessing you?"

Along with joyous moments and good memories like this one came bad times for the Betars.
#27613
The two built a life together, a home, a family and lived out their own version of the American dream. Betar continued peddling fruit and in 1938, opened up his own grocery store, Betar's Market, in the south end of Bridgeport.

"We worked hard and never got tired of making money," he said. "This is the land of opportunity."

Ann stayed at home and raised their children. "She was a great mother," Betar said. "She raised five children and she was a wonderful caretaker."
#27614
It was slightly more complicated than that. Ann was arranged to be married to another man, 20 years her senior, whom her parents thought would be the best provider for their daughter. The 17-year-old was less than pleased with the arrangement and taken with Betar, then 21. Breaking with tradition and going against her family's wishes, the two eloped.

"At 17, you wonder if you're making the right choice," she said. "I had grown up with him and we had good times together and we knew each other very well. And it's turned out to be 80 years. ….God seems to have been with us. And we've been very fortunate and wonderful."
#27615
Humble Beginnings

John Betar met Ann Shawah growing up in the same Syrian community in Bridgeport, Conn. Betar immigrated to America as a young child in 1921 with his brother, he explained, joining his father who put down roots for them in Bridgeport. After attending grammar school, Betar began working as a fruit peddler and met Ann Shawah, the daughter of Syrian immigrants, in the neighborhood.

"I fell for her right away," he said. "I used to have a Ford Roaster and I used to pick her and her friends and drive them to high school. Gradually she liked me and we got together."

Couple Celebrates 80th Wedding Anniversary, Shares Secrets to Lasting Marriage

By LAUREN SHER | Good Morning America â€" Tue, Nov 20, 2012

On Nov. 25, 1932, FDR had just defeated Herbert Hoover, the daily newspaper cost two cents, and Ann Shawah said "I do" to John Betar in Harrison, N.Y.

Fast forward through 13 presidents and 80 years to 2012: the Betars are still happily married. After five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great children, the couple from Fairfield, Conn., will celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary Sunday.

"We are so blessed. We are fortunate," John Betar, 101, said.

"We are very fortunate. It can be repeated and repeated," Ann, 97, echoed. "It is unconditional love and understanding. We have had that. We consider it a blessing."

There having been no laws broken and no evidence of Petraeus having been targeted for extortion, the investigation could have been completed shortly after interviewing Petraeus, which might have allowed him to keep the job. But the fact that Humphries had alerted Cantor made that impossible.  And now, here we are, treating a simple affair between consenting adults as if it were the greatest national security breach since the Rosenbergs (which was its own controversy).

Enough.

http://americablog.com/2012/11/
#27618
As a political appointee, Petraeus would lose his job automatically if Romney had won the election. It would not therefore be at all unusual for Petraeus to resign to pursue a career in the private sector shortly after the election. If Obama had lost, the faux Benghazi scandal would have been immediately forgotten and Petraeus could have resigned without attracting attention. But for the GOP faux scandal mongering, Petraeus could have resigned without the need to give a reason in any case. The only reason that it was necessary to provide explanation was that the GOP ‘Support Our Troops!’ brigade were engaged in their dishonest attempt to turn the Benghazi attack to their political advantage.
#27619
Adultery might expose an individual to threat of extortion. Under standing policy, Petraeus would have likely lost his security clearance immediately pending the outcome of an investigation. That would have made it all but impossible for Petraeus to remain as Director of the CIA for any length of time. But removing a security clearance merely prevents a person from accessing additional information that they might compromise. People cannot be forced to forget secrets they have already learned. Absent any proof that Petraeus had broken any law, there was a national security interest in not disclosing the affair unless doing so was necessary.
#27620
Much is being made of the apparent delay in reporting the result of the investigation to the Director of National Intelligence, and that the President was only notified after the election. Perhaps Romney might have been elected if only the FBI had told us that the Director of the CIA can’t keep his pants zipped! As if.  I don’t doubt that the DNI delayed informing the President until after the election, but only because the President was busy with rather more important matters, and no decision could be taken until after the election in any case.
#27621
It does not take a scandal chart to describe the known facts about the affair. Petraeus and Broadwell had an affair that allegedly began after Petraeus retired from the military in 2011, and thus was no longer bound by military law under which adultery is a criminal offense.

Four months ago, around the time that the affair ended, Broadwell wrote anonymous emails to Tampa socialite Jill Kelley telling her to stop making moves on ‘her’ man. Kelly then forwarded the emails to Humphries, an FBI agent who had been trying to get off with her by sending her shirtless emails. The FBI agent informed his office who opened a case. Dissatisfied by the apparent progress on the case, Humphries then contacted a member of Congress who referred the matter to GOP House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

“Honey traps,” using sex for blackmail, are real. After a recent professional event I attended, one of my colleagues recounted the story of his last trip to China when he was approached by two very charming and exceptionally pretty young ladies in the lobby of his hotel. When I mentioned this to a friend of mine in the diplomatic service, he told me of one of his bosses whose career (and marriage) came to a sudden end after a similar encounter in a well known hotel in China.
#27623
The warriors of the Roman Republic were scarcely known for their puritanical sexual mores, but they nevertheless managed to conquer most of the known world. One minute the patriotic press are wrapping themselves in the flag and telling people to Support Our Troops! The next they are hounding (recently-former) senior officers from their jobs over ‘inappropriate’ emails.

Petraeus and the US obsession with sex scandals

by Myrddin
11/15/2012

Let’s talk about Mr. Petraeus.

Having an affair certainly can make someone a security risk (and a laughing stock). But that does not explain why the US media is still yammering on about former general, and now former CIA director, David Petraeus being an adulterer, or why the bizarre conspiracies on the matter from the conservative entertainment industry are considered newsworthy.

there must be a survey that shows the u.s. is more tabloid-leaning aka tsismoso.  look at what tend to hug the headlines, among others-- bobbit, lewinsky, wiener, sandusky, sanford, schwarzenegger, woods, petraeus, etc.  it's a veritable teenage soap opera of runaway hormones, on prime time. ;D

In Roman Catholic canon law, excommunication is a censure and thus a "medicinal penalty" intended to invite the person to change behavior or attitude, repent, and return to full communion. It is not an "expiatory penalty" designed to make satisfaction for the wrong done, much less a "vindictive penalty" designed solely to punish. (wikipedia)

Matthew 1:1-17
New International Version (NIV)

1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,
7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9 Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
Abihud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Andrew Jackson and Rachel Donelson

One of the most controversial first ladies, Rachel Donelson was married to Lewis Robards of Kentucky before she wed Andrew Jackson in 1791. She had believed that her ex-husband had finalized their divorce, but in fact, he did not legally file the papers until 1793. Because even a simple, clear-cut divorce was scandalous and highly frowned upon at the time, Jackson's opponents used Rachel's past against him during his run for presidency, calling her a woman of loose morals.

The stress of the mudslinging aggravated a pre-existing heart condition, and Rachel never got to see Jackson become president, passing away following a heart attack two months before he took office. Jackson was so shocked and grief-stricken that he reportedly clung to Rachel long after she had died, hoping that she would revive.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

One of our more modern tragic love stories is just over a hundred years old and from an unlikely source â€" the British royal family. The love that Queen Victoria felt for her husband Prince Albert was as genuine as her 63-year reign was long, say historians, and his untimely death in 1861, 40 years before hers, devastated the otherwise powerful monarch.

Victoria favored the color black for the rest of her life and spent much of the last decades of her reign in relative seclusion. When she finally passed away in 1901, she was interred in their common mausoleum and had these words inscribed over the door: "Farewell best beloved, here at last I shall rest with thee, with thee in Christ I shall rise again."

Ines de Castro and King Pedro

Ines de Castro became a lady-in-waiting for Princess Constance of Portugal in 1340 and quickly stole the heart of her prince Pedro, the heir to the Portuguese throne. When Constance died in 1349, Pedro tried to make Ines his lawful queen â€" they already had three children together â€" but his father the king intervened, banishing Ines and ultimately having her murdered when geographical distance couldn't keep Pedro away.

The act sparked a civil war between father and son and, when the latter claimed victory, Pedro exhumed his lover, built her a royal tomb, and had all of Portugal swear allegiance to Ines as their queen.

Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal

Ever heard of the Taj Mahal? The famous palace in India is actually the ultimate declaration of love, built in the 17th century by Shah Jahan as a stunning final resting place for his beloved wife. Mumtaz Mahal â€" or "Jewel of the Palace," as he named her â€" was the ruler's third wife, but he clearly favored her and was so grief-stricken when she died during childbirth that he immediately began work on the Taj Mahal. It took 23 years to complete the homage, where he joined her at his own death in 1666.

Heloise and Abelard

British poet Alexander Pope turned their story into a piece of classic literature, but Heloise and Abelard were in fact real, ridiculously in love, and doomed to a tragic end in mid 12th century France. Abelard was the girl's live-in tutor, 20 years her senior, and the romance so enraged her disapproving uncle that he had Abelard castrated shortly after they were discovered. Distraught, the lovers entered the monastery and wrote a set of now-famous letters to each other until their death, though they never met again.

It's a love story so epic that Shakespeare saw it fit to be the subject of one of his tragedies. They met in 41 B.C. at the height of turmoil in the Roman Republic; she, an Egyptian queen, seduced him, a powerful (and already married) general, into a romantic and tenuous political alliance between their territories.

The alliance would prove sour when future emperor Octavian convinced the Roman senate that Marc Antony was power-hungry and bewitched by Cleopatra, declaring war on his former partner in 31 B.C. Both Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide during the war rather than be captured.

The 6 Most Tragic Love Stories in History

By Heather Whipps and Remy Melina
LiveScience

Bad Romance

Nothing makes one's heart flutter quite like a good love story. And by good, we mean tragic, of course.

Though Shakespeare's plays are littered with doomed lovers â€" unrequited passion and death makes for good reading, apparently â€" couples equally as star-crossed can be found in the world's history books.

These six heartbreaking historical tales from the ancient to more recent past are as sad as anything that has ever been conjured up in fiction. Read on for a trip through doomed romance history.

Home sweet home: Before eventually depositing the cat safely on the floor of what is thought to be the animals' owner's home in Russia

The cat seems quite content to be transported piggy-back style as the two animals make their journey into the house, apparently encouraged by their owner from behind the video camera.

Helping hand: Apparently tired of waiting for his feline friend to catch up as he heads for the inside of the house, the chihuahua scoops the cat up and on to his back

Almost there: The chihuahua rounds the corner with the cat still on his back...

At the opening of the 48-second clip, which was posted on YouTube by a user in Russia, the pets are perched side by side on a ledge at the side of a house.

The chihuahua jumps down on to the ground, then turns and look back as if waiting for the cat to do the same.

But the cat remains on the ledge, and the dog proceeds to jump back up and then down again in an apparent bid to encourage his feline friend to follow him.

But his fellow pet shows little interest in moving, and - seemingly reluctant to leave his pal behind - the dog eventually puts his head underneath the cat's tummy, scooping the animal over his neck and onto his back before trotting off towards the house.

Hanging around: The two animals are perched on a ledge at the side of the house together at the start of the video clip - the grey cat is in the foreground with the black dog behind

Need a ride? Cat hitches a lift on dog's back in bizarre Russian YouTube video

By Kerry Mcdermott
25 July 2012

Dogs are widely regarded as man's best friend - but the tiny pooch in this bizarre YouTube video seems to be a pretty good pal to his owner's cat too.

The small black dog can be seen lifting the grey cat - which is virtually the same size - on to his back before carrying it around a corner and all the way into their home.

The determined dog, which appears to be a chihuahua, stops for a few breathers as he carries the creature across his back, but perseveres until he has deposited the feline on the floor inside the house.

Faithful friend: The dog in the video clip trots along carrying the grey cat draped over his back

Pagkanindot tan awon sa mga hulagway makawala ug stress.

kun kugosay lang ug iro, ambot kapila na ko sukad.  the most painful was when my dog of more than 20 years ago had distemper.  gadagan ko nga nagkugos, gahilak.  naa koy natagbong mga kaila, nangatawa, gisiyagitan pa kog "paminyo na lagi aron di ka magmantinir ug iro!"  bawos na lang kog, "di kog tawo kay di mopaghot!"  my beautiful dog bongbong died a few days after bisag unsaon ug tabang sa vet.  it was too late.  i was too late.
