this is a backhoe.  in philippine politics, this has become a weapon of mass destruction (WMD).  in 2009, the political party lakas-cmd was a recipient of the graces of the backhoe.  nowadays, it looks as if two parties-- the administration liberal party (LP) and the united nationalist alliance (UNA) both share in the possible graces of the backhoe.

p.s. pikoy is an expert driver of backhoes.

friendly advice; if you wish to be governor or mayor, own a backhoe first.  don't use government facilities for personal gains.

aherm.  i have a confession...

si banana republic didn't grow up a catholic.  but he was willing to convert.  he was baptized right before our wedding ceremony.  short cut, sa pinurol nga pagkasulti.  he received three sacraments in less than an hour-- baptism, matrimony, eucharist.

i believe the priest (a close family friend who happens to be one of the three canon lawyers of the cebu archdiocese at the time) took the short cut because his priority was for us to have a catholic wedding.  catechism came later, slowly, from me.  but he's the bible expert.  we have no religious issues.

i hope that even if the process of conversion seemed somewhat inverted (convert now, study later), it did not in any way negate his being catholic?

The UK’s confusion over the appropriateness of things sexual continues.

While the supposedly trend-setting Edinburgh Fringe gets more-and-more Puritan and this year â€" in a new move â€" is censoring ‘naughty’ words from their listings because “our Programme is read by families”, London yesterday paraded up to a thousand real-life fleshy bits-and-pieces unmentionable at the Fringe around the main streets of a sunny English capital city thronged with children, tourists, persons of a nervous disposition and, in Piccadilly, three nuns.

It was the annual London Naked Bike Ride.

One does not need to be a lawyer to know that the Ampatuans’ best legal strategy is to wear out the prosecution: to see more witnesses fall to sudden illness or even more sudden death, to see the victims’ families consume themselves in endless worry and constant expense, to see political expediency slowly but surely trump evidence. How can the political parties not know that support for Ampatuan candidates feeds the very impunity that led to the massacre?

LGU Philippines / Re: Backhoe politics
November 24, 2012, 12:16:20 AM
Without a doubt, the Ampatuans know how to manufacture election results, something ex-president Gloria Arroyo knows well. But then again UNA is fielding Juan Miguel Zubiri, one of the beneficiaries of Ampatuan competence, in its Senate slate; perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised at UNA’s unprincipled pragmatism.

But the symbiotic relationship between local elites and national politicians is precisely one of the reasons why the witnesses, the victims’ families and the loyal lawyers prosecuting the case continue, not only to worry about the trial’s outcome, but also to fear for their safety. They know, because they have seen it for themselves, that political power breeds money, and money buys not only armies but time itself, and time is their enemy.
#27534
LGU Philippines / Re: Backhoe politics
November 24, 2012, 12:15:03 AM
UNA sees itself as the party of competence, because of Binay’s lengthy stint as mayor of Makati, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s lengthy resumé and deposed President Joseph Estrada’s lengthy, uh, acting career. In what possible universe can the Ampatuan family be considered avatars of competence?

That the ARMM is, in the words of President Aquino, a “failed experiment,” tells us all we need to know about Zaldy, the clan’s fair-haired boy. That Maguindanao was one of the worst-run provinces in the country during Andal Sr.’s long reign cannot be proof of competence. Unless, of course, UNA is interested in another kind of competence.
#27535
LGU Philippines / Re: Backhoe politics
November 24, 2012, 12:13:01 AM
By following Mangudadatu’s lead, President Aquino’s own party has now allowed the Aquino and Ampatuan names to be linked under the damning label of political convenience. People will ask: What, really, is the difference between the President’s cousin, Bam Aquino, and, say, Sarip Kasan Ampatuan, who is running for mayor (against another Ampatuan!)? They are both running because they belong to the “right” family, and the time is opportune.

But if the LP is to be scorned, Vice President Jejomar Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance must be condemned. According to the same PCIJ report, UNA is fielding 34 Ampatuans for various offices in Maguindanaoâ€"including the wives of two of the principal suspects in the massacre: Zaldy, the former governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and Andal Jr., the former mayor of Datu Unsay.
#27536
LGU Philippines / Re: Backhoe politics
November 24, 2012, 12:12:08 AM
The ruling Liberal Party sees itself as the party of reform. But what principle of reform politics allows the LP to field nine Ampatuans in six local races? According to the PCIJ, two clan members are running for mayor, one for vice mayor, and six for councilorâ€"all under the LP flag. And according to Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu, these Ampatuans are nothing like the leaders of the family who have been prosecuted for masterminding the massacre.

That may well be, but Mangudadatu, whose own wife and sister perished in the mass killings, is missing the point. The first step in ensuring that the shocking events of Nov. 23, 2009, will not happen again is to remove the Ampatuan family from political powerâ€"not to reward those members who failed to stop the massacre or (and this is a point often conveniently forgotten) who failed to stop other excesses committed by the family since at least 2001.

Backhoe politics

Philippine Daily Inquirer
November 22nd, 2012

The worst episode of election-related violence in our history, the deadliest single assault on the media recorded in the world, the most brutal display of impunity in memoryâ€"and yet three years after the horrific massacre in Ampatuan town in Maguindanao, the powerful family that ordered it has not only successfully delayed criminal conviction, it also remains very much a political force in the province.

Nothing prevents the Ampatuan family from contesting political office in the province they call their own, of course; that is within their right (even if the massacre’s immediate cause was the family’s attempt to prevent other candidates from exercising that same right). But should other politicians help entrench the Ampatuans in a position where they can escape full responsibility for the massacre?

i cannot believe that only catholics can receive grace.  non-catholics may not have the grace of the sacraments as we know them, but by being good and true and virtuous they stand to deserve graces from a creator in whatever form of worship they take him to be.

for those keenly interested in this aspect of catholic doctrine, the article The Case for Mary's Perpetual Virginity explains it in accessible layman's terms.  here's the link: http://www.catholic.com/magazine/articles/the-case-for-mary%E2%80%99s-perpetual-virginity
#27543
Quote from: fdaray on November 23, 2012, 02:24:22 PM
Mary was only virgin before the birth of Jesus.

Matthew 12:46-50

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

oops, if we must be literal about this thus...

The Church has always understood these passages as not referring to other children of the Virgin Mary. In fact James and Joseph, "brothers of Jesus," are the sons of another Mary, a disciple of Christ, whom St. Matthew significantly calls "the other Mary." They are close relations of Jesus, according to an Old Testament expression. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 500)- http://www.catholic.com/

“I’ll be out here Tuesday, taking out that trash, if you want to shoot that,” he said.

And this was because Tuesday is trash day in the domestic routine that he appears resolved to continue.

Of course, there is no being certain, but it seems most likely that as he arrives at Thanksgiving, a day of families, Scott Broadwell will continue to be the Good Husband.

He is proving in his own way that sometimes being a real man means being one of the girls.

The media mob was indeed there on Monday morning, when Scott and Paula emerged with their kids. The chalked declaration of love on the driveway had faded, but Scott and Paula seemed determined to resume lives as Dad and Mom.

Perhaps one delayed after effect of her parents’ divorce was that Paula for a time forgot that the title of Dad or Mom is far more important than General. She seemed to be relearning that now and her most pressing ambition at this moment was to get the kids to school.

The couple drove on in separate cars, each taking one of the kids, most likely because Lucien is 6 and has started grammar school while Landon is only 4 and in a pre-school. Scott was wearing hospital scrubs and likely continued on to his work as a radiologist. He had already told the reporters that he intended to still be around the next day.

#27548
Hopefully, Paula has now noted that the supposed hero’s hero, Petraeus, ducked the cameras on the way into the Capitol while her husband, Scott, unflinchingly braved the media mob outside their residence when they returned home on Sunday evening.

Family: Scott and Paula Broadwell took their two sons into their home after more than a week in hiding

Homecoming: Paula Broadwell carries her son into her house in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday evening

Scott helped Paula bring in the children, then emerged to carry in their luggage and groceries. He politely told the reporters that he would have a comment some time in the future, but not at the moment. He even managed to joke.

“See you guys tomorrow,” he said.

Back to life: Dr. Scott Broadwell carries grocery bags from their car outside their home on Sunday night
#27549
The Broadwell home may have become a house besieged by a media mob frenzied for details about Paula’s affair, but at day’s end, Mommy and Daddy were both there to tuck in the kids. Scott must know that he and Paula can still write a tale of another kind, perhaps not a fairy one with a happily ever after, but maybe enough for a happily after all.

One sad irony is that Paula seems to have strayed from Scott after becoming smitten with someone who does play the king, perhaps because she harbors regal ambitions for herself. She also may have been propelled by undercurrents that can lead children of divorce onto the rocks themselves in the same way the children of suicides have a higher incidence of taking their own lives.
#27550
That appears to have been very much Scott’s approach to marriage. He may have been able to restrain himself from answering betrayal with blind fury because he appears to consider himself not a king but a partner with his own human failings. And, as the chalked message in the driveway seems to attest, he also understands that they are no longer just Scott and Paula, but Mom and Dad.

Even a perfect fairy-tale wedding almost never leads to a perfect fairy-tale marriage. But kids have a need to believe that it does, that daddy is a prince and mommy is a princess and they will all live happily ever after. And kids will cling to that belief despite evidence to the contrary as long as daddy and mommy are under one roof and at least civil to each other.
#27551
He goes on, “I learned this time around that even though I was doing all of the stuff around the house so that she wouldn’t have to, I was still trying to chain her to the house. That’s not the case any more. I’ve discovered that I don’t ‘need’ that break every day, that raising the kids and doing the housework doesn’t mean I can or should expect my wife to take over so I can go ‘off duty.’”

He concludes, “To have a better marriage, I’ve decided to let my wife be who she wants to be, not what I want to make her into … We both need time together and time apart. I need to get out of the house, but so does she. So, I’m learning to let go. And in so doing, we’re growing closer.”
#27552
A continuing example of how a marriage should go would be offered by a member of the bride’s wedding party. Capt. Devon Blake is a fellow graduate of West Point and a military intelligence officer. She would go on to have four kids. She would also have two combat deployments while her husband stayed home with the kids.

“I’m just one of the girls,” her husband, Tim Blake, would joke.

In all seriousness, Tim Blake would prove himself to be a role model and inspiration for all husbands as he posted “Army Dad, a blog about life from a stay at home dad and proud army spouse.”

In one entry, he writes, “My goal during each of the last two deployments has been to move beyond treading water and getting by. I have wanted to take the time and use it for self examination, to find those areas of my life that need to be changed, and then to affect that change.”
#27553
“It was a fairy tale wedding,” recalls Lt. Col. Ronald Leininger, the Protestant Army chaplain who married them. “Spectacular … beautiful.”

Scott and Paula were both active duty Army captains, he a physician and commander of the Mannheim military clinic, she in military intelligence. They both seemed exactly what a military officer should be.

“Scott Broadwell is a fine, fine man,” the chaplain says, “Paula is, too. She apparently just made some bad judgments of late.”

A reminder of how they did not want their marriage to go was at the ceremony in the person of her parents, Paul Kranz and Nadene Maier, whose union is reported to have ended in a contentious divorce.
#27554
In the driveway at their home in Charlotte, N.C., a hand more mature than that of their two young sons wrote “Dad Loves Mom” in chalk, along with a big heart. The best guess is that it was Scott’s doing. And it seems to be a message to their sons as well as to her, a declaration to the family as a whole.

Even if by some small chance he was not the one who chalked the message, there seems little doubt that love has in fact been his governing and guiding emotion in their marriage. They had seemed the most promising of couples back in 2000, when they exchanged vows in the picture book setting of the chapel in the Heidelberg Castle overlooking the city said to be Germany’s most romantic.
#27555
And to make it worse, to make it at once excruciatingly intimate and horrifyingly public, the news of Paula Broadwell’s affair with General David Petraeus first reached Scott when he and his wife were celebrating her 40th birthday with a romantic getaway at the cosy Middleton Inn in Virginia.

After a day of riding bikes and sipping champagne and a night of luxuriating in a room with a four-poster bed and a working fireplace, Scott suddenly learned what the whole world also learned. The setting could only have made the shock more unbearable, but there have been no reports of shouts or abuse as the couple abruptly departed the inn. The staff afterward only recalled that the Broadwells looked decidedly unhappy.

a very touching article...

Scott Broadwell Proves to Be a Class Act in the Wake of His Wife’s Affair

by Michael Daly
Nov 21, 2012

From Hillary Clinton to Silda Wall Spitzer, we have seen plenty of political “Good Wives” stoically survive on the public stage. Now it’s a husband’s turn as Scott Broadwell weathers the fallout of his wife’s affair with Gen. David Petraeus. By Michael Daly.

In this Nov. 4, 2012, photograph, Paula and Scott Broadwell are seen at the Patriot Gala, the annual black-tie event at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. (Daniel Coston, Charlotte Observer / Getty Images)

Call him the Good Husband, seemingly as steadfast beside his errant mate as is the proverbial Good Wife.

We had Hillary Clinton and Silda Wall Spitzer. Now we have Scott Broadwell.

The more traditional male response would have been to convert sudden hurt to instant rage and demand in essence, “How dare you do this to the king?”

equal in what?  equally valid, equal number of adherents?  the knee-jerk answer here would be to say that one's own religion is over and above other religions.

i'd rather say that unless one is embarking on a scholarly study of comparative religion, there's no comparing of religions.  to say that one's own religion is better than those of others is to be insecure about one's own faith.

tiger is the stray dog who fell to the septic tank.  (fortunately, it was still empty.)  i arrived a little over a week later and begged that the poor dog be brought out after days of suffering below ground.  the carpenters had the sense to drop food and water for her, for which I was very thankful.   she was lassoed and brought out with a rope as no one would dare hold him (aw, she's a 'her'.)  obviously with nowhere to go, she stayed around.  then the banana republic said one day that henceforth she will be his own pure askal dog.  thus we have tiger.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson's voice may be flawless -- but her sense of style is certainly not. The singer falls flat in a too-tight leather dress with tacky embellishments and unflattering glittery booties.

Jenny McCarthy

The glittering sequins on Jenny McCarthy's gold skirt are eye-catching and fun, but the ruched tube top and oversized belt make the look seem a little dated. Plus, she should leave that blonde pompadour to the professionals -- like Pink!

Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi Lauper's AMAs look is certainly memorable -- but for all the wrong reasons! Sporting a tartan jacket, shredded leggings and pink hair, the "Time After Time" singer's look is just plain wacky.

Heidi Klum

We're thinking Heidi Klum might need a lesson in subtlety. The supermodel flaunts her famous figure in a gold, embroidered minidress -- but with the sheer fabric and the super-high slit, she has a little too much on display. And did she really need to wear pumps in the same fabric as her dress?

Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks definitely looks sexy, but we're just not loving with her chaotic fashion choice. The wild pattern combined with the mesh sleeves on her gown have a dizzying effect -- but her curves look great!

Christina Aguilera

We're not sure if it's her too-tan skin, her severe new 'do, or the ruffle on her purple ombre dress, but something about Christina Aguilera's look is just a little off. At least her energetic performance was right on the mark!

President Aquino, who on Monday publicly rebuked Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on his statement that Asean leaders had agreed not to “internationalize” the disputes, convinced five other leaders on the wisdom of the Philippine position on the issue.

On the President’s intervention, Asean issued a joint communiqué expressing the 10-nation bloc’s desire for a peaceful resolution of the territorial disputes, officials said.

The joint communiqué, which did not carry Hun Sen’s statement, was issued at the close of the Asean-Japan Summit in Phnom Penh on Monday.

5 nations support PH position on sea dispute

By TJ Burgonio
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

The Philippines got backing from five countries in its position on territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), a “huge victory” despite China’s fresh refusal to commit to a code of conduct in the sea, Malacañang said Wednesday.

China refused to discuss the territorial disputes during the Asean-China Summit, one of the highest-level meetings during the 21st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in Phnom Penh that ended on Tuesday.

But four Asean members claiming territories in the disputed seaâ€"Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnamâ€"agreed to hold talks in Manila on Dec. 12 to see how they could move forward discussions on their territorial disputes with China.

Artists from over 30 countries show their recent works for Muscovites. The architects of Saint Basil’s Cathedral, GUM, Historic museum, the Arc in the Gorky Park couldn’t even imagine that once in the 21st century their works will become a base for modern light painters. And every masterpiece is a result of hard work. (http://english.ruvr.ru/)
