The Thinker

The Thinker (Le Penseur in French) is a bronze sculpture on marble pedestal by Auguste Rodin, whose first cast, of 1902, is now in the Musée Rodin in Paris; there are some 20 other original castings, as well as various other versions, studies, and posthumous castings. (wikipedia)

Vietnam has already said it will not stamp the passports, while Taiwan has protested against the map’s maritime borders and India has rejected the map’s depiction of its northern border with China. India has retaliated by issuing Chinese citizens visas embossed with New Delhi’s own maps.

The United States, which is taking no side in the territorial disputes but wants to ensure safe maritime traffic in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes, has said it will raise its concerns over the map with Beijing.

China’s Foreign Ministry says putting the map in the passport was not directed at any particular country.

Manila says will not stamp new Chinese passport

AP /  November 28, 2012

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" The Philippines has become the latest country to say it will not stamp visas in a new Chinese passport because it includes a map of the South China Sea that Manila says shows its territory.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday that the visas will be stamped in a separate visa application form.

It said the move reinforces its protest formally conveyed to Beijing last week against China’s "excessive claim over almost the entire South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea."

It said stamping the passport could be seen as "legitimizing" China’s claims.

The Nile today

#27224
Even though some fairly conservative writers have adopted the “silt” view, and suggest that the “miracle” was one of “timing” (cf. Walter Kaiser, “Exodus,” The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Grand Rapids: Zondervan, Vol. 2, p. 350), the devout student of the Bible has no need to resort to fanciful rationalizations of the sacred text in order to placate the theories of skepticism â€" which are vested with motives of self-interest. A.B. Davidson, the famous Scottish scholar (Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Exegesis, Free College, Edinburgh), characterized the attempt to identify the “blood” of the first plague, with the natural redness of the Nile at its rising, as “quite absurd” (The Imperial Bible Dictionary, Patrick Fairbairn, Ed., London: Blackie & Son, 1876, Vol. 5, p. 270).

In summary, we must note that the Old Testament text does not even remotely suggest that the Nile merely took on the “color” of blood. There was biblical language to express that concept when necessary (cf. 2 Kings 3:22, “water. . . red as blood”). Rather, scripture says the water “turned to blood” (v. 17), it “[became] blood” and was blood (vv. 19-20). George Rawlinson, Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford, wrote:

“It is idle to ask whether the water would have answered to all the modern tests, microscopic and other, by which blood is known. The question cannot be answered. All that we are entitled to conclude from the words of the text is, that the water had all the physical appearance â€" the look, taste, smell, texture of blood; and hence, that it was certainly not merely discolored by the red soil of Abyssinia, nor by cryptogamic plants and infusoria. Water thus changed would neither kill fish, nor ‘stink,’ nor be utterly undrinkable” (“The Book of Exodus,” Pulpit Commentary, Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1961 Reprint, p. 171).
#27226
9.  Dr. Joseph Free contended that the plagues were demonstrated to be miraculous in at least five different ways.

    Intensification â€" they were far beyond any ordinary occurrence;

Prediction â€" specific times were indicated by the arrival and
    cessation of some of the plagues;

Discrimination â€" some of the disasters affected the Egyptians, but
    not the Israelites;

Orderliness â€" there was an orderly increase in severity, from the
    water-to-blood to the death-of-the-firstborn;

Spiritual Purpose â€" discrediting of the gods of Egypt and revealing
Jehovah as Israel’s Savior (Archaeology and Bible History, Wheaton, IL: Van
    Kampen Press, 1950, p. 95).
#27227
7.  The plague was clearly an assault upon some of the “gods” of Egypt; they worshipped both the Nile and some species of fish. If this were an ordinary silting discoloration, the event would hardly have functioned as an apologetic in favor of Israel’s God, since the Nile was “colored” frequently.

8.  The text specifically says that this plague was of God. “And seven days were fulfilled, after that Jehovah had smitten the river” (v. 25).
#27228
5.  Silting was common to the Nile, yet this did not produce a distinct “stink” (v. 18), such as occurred on this occasion. In fact, a pagan “Hymn to the Nile” (one of Egypt’s gods) declares that the river is “sweet of fragrance” (James Pritchard, ed., Ancient Near-Eastern Texts, Princeton, NJ: University Press, 1969, p. 272).

6.  Silting cannot account for the fact that the water in their pools, ponds, and even in their household vessels of wood and stone, changed to blood (v. 19).
#27229
3.  Ordinarily the silt influx of the Nile, in late summer and fall, was considered a blessing by the Egyptians, yet the “blood” phenomenon was a curse (“foul,” “loathsome,” and “undrinkable”) from which they sought relief (vv. 18,21).

4.  Normally, silting does not cause the death of fish, yet the fish of the Nile died when the waters turned to blood (vv. 18,21).
#27230
1.  The divine account plainly says that the waters of Egypt “turned to blood” (vv. 17-20). While it is true that the term “blood” may be employed at times in a figurative sense (cf. Joel 2:31), the context must require it. There is no such necessity in Exodus 7. What does the term “blood” signify in connection with the tenth plague (Exodus 12:7)? Certainly not “muddy water.”

2.  The biblical record conveys the impression that the waters of Egypt changed immediately when Moses smote the water of the Nile with his rod. Pharaoh and his servants saw the water change color (vv. 17,20), whereas silting gradually discolors rivers.
#27231
There is nothing new about this rationalistic approach to the supernatural events of sacred Scripture. For example one writer says: “Deposits from the Abyssinian lakes often color the flood waters a dark reddish brown, especially in the Upper Nile. That might well be said to look like ‘blood’” (Werner Keller, The Bible As History, New York, NY: Bantam, 1956, p. 120).

Misguided attempts to “befriend” the Bible, by helping to provide “natural” explanations for such events as the “plagues” are seriously in error, no matter how well-intentioned the commentator may be. And quite frankly, most of the time such objections are skeptically motivated. The following brief points may be offered in rebuttal.

Did the Nile River Really Turn to Blood?

By Wayne Jackson

“A college professor says that the Bible contains much that is ‘myth.’ An example given is when the Bible says that the Nile River was turned into blood (Exodus 7:14-25). It is claimed that this was merely a case of red-colored ‘silt’ that churned into the water of the Nile during the flooding season of that river. How might the Christian respond to this?”

Exodus 7:

15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake.

16 Then say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the desert. But until now you have not listened.

17 This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD: With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood.

18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink; the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.'"

19 The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt - over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs' -  and they will turn to blood. Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in the wooden buckets and stone jars."

20 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood.

21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.

Miriam not impressed with JLo

Nov 28th, 2012

Manila, Philippines â€" Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago attended the “Dance Again World Tour” of Jennifer Lopez Monday night at the Mall of Asia (MOA) in Pasay city but she was not impressed.

“I’m strictly a high brow girl. I like classical music opera and ballet particularly abroad. I went for exposure, total immersion. I was shocked beyond belief at the attack, assault on my ears,” she said.

“It was so loud and there were so many people and they stirred themselves into a frenzy. They were worshipping at the foot of someone who was no longer human, they transformed her, she morphed into a digital idol,” she said.

Santiago maintained that the Philippines could use more musicians, singers in the opera, ballet style.

“Let me just say I was not impressed. I have no ambition to becoming a sex kitten or assaulting people to deafness,” she said. (Mario B. Casayuran)

earlier, in august, a lake in france turned red.

Lake turns blood red in Camargue, southern France.

River waters turning to blood might be something out of an apocalyptic nightmare, but, fear not: A river in France is not red with blood, but rather with salt.

A lake in the Camargue in southern France -- a river delta where the Rhône meets the sea -- has turned blood red, and scientists believe that the change in hue is due to a natural phenomenon, the New York Daily News reports.

The high concentration of salt in the form of salt flats turn the normally blue water a deep crimson shade.

"Mining represents an extra gear for the Philippine economy once the regulatory environment is rationalized," Purisima said.

The government's peace agreement with Muslim rebels, once completed and fully implemented, represents another extra gear that will unlock the significant potential of the southern Mindanao region, he said.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index on Wednesday surged to its 31st all-time closing high for the year, buoyed by the GDP figures. The index gained 47.27 points or 0.9 percent, ending at 5,633.72 points.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said the growth figures and multiple records set recently in the country's stock market show an upward momentum in investor and consumer confidence. Renewed confidence in the Philippines partly reflects President Aquino III's push to reduce graft and improve governance following a succession of corrupt governments.

Purisima said the expansion is significant because it is much higher than the trend growth rate of 4.7 percent in the past 10 years and comes amid a global economic downturn. It also happened despite a 2.2 percent decline in mining, where reforms are disrupting production.
#27252
The economy grew 6.5 percent for the first nine months of the year and is likely to exceed the government's 5-6 percent growth target for 2012, he said. In Asia, only China grew faster than the Philippines in the third quarter with growth of 7.4 percent.

"This economic expansion continues to be broad-based as almost all sectors posted higher year-on-year growth rates," said Balisacan.

Philippine economy expands 7.1 percent in 3Q

November 28, 2012 05:06 AM EST | AP

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Philippine economy expanded 7.1 percent in the third quarter, among the fastest growing in Asia despite headwinds from overseas, officials said Wednesday.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said household spending, public construction and higher farm output boosted growth. Exports have also improved but trade makes up a smaller proportion of the economy than in many other Asian nations, cushioning the Philippines from weak growth in Europe, Japan and the U.S.

I find China's method of staking its claim not only cute, but effective. Cute, because we cannot go to China without our passports being stamped with a map of Chinese territory claiming property which belongs to us under international treaty agreements; effective because it riled our government into sending a note verbale which highlighted our inherent weakness by our failure to produce a show of force to back it up.

But two can play that game; or what's sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander. What's to stop us from playing it cute and from having our own visas re-designed to include a map which stakes our claim to the West Philippine Sea? We're as sovereign as China and short of bringing a complaint up to the United Nations (which they are loath to do because the U.N. has already recognized our claim to it in the "law of the seas" international agreement) all that they can do is send us a note verbale which will be as weak as the one we sent them.

UNITED STATES:  The United States plans to raise the controversial new passports with Beijing, saying the documents were not helpful.

"We do have concerns about this map, which is causing tension and anxiety between and among the states in the South China Sea," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"We do intend to raise this with the Chinese," she said, adding the new passports were not "helpful to the environment we all seek to resolve these issues."

Ms Nuland said the United States would accept the passports as a valid travel document, as it was up to countries "to decide what their passports look like as long as they meet international standards."

But she argued the look of a document was different from "taking steps that antagonize countries that we want to see a negotiation happen with".

the fallout of the new chinese passport
(as reported by radio australia at http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/)

VIETNAM:  Vietnamese border guards are refusing to stamp entry visas into controversial new Chinese passports, which feature a map of Beijing's claim to almost all of the South China Sea.

Vietnam has said the computer-chipped passports violate its sovereignty, and has demanded Beijing withdraw the documents, which show the contested Paracel and Spratly Islands as Chinese territory.

"We do not stamp the new Chinese passports," said an official at Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport, the country's main international gateway.

"We issue them a separate visa."

A border guard in northern Lang Son province said they were also not stamping the new passports, but issuing separate visas to Chinese arrivals.

Even with the new passports, however, "Chinese citizens can still travel normally through the border gate," the guard added.

i hope we also do it vietnam's way, which is not to stamp the entry/exit of these passports.  a separate sheet of paper to be attached to the passport will do.

Mittens’ owner, Pat Weber, says the kitten was just days old when her grandson found it in their pole barn and brought it into their house. Mittens hadn’t had a litter for two years, but allowed the kitten to suckle and began producing milk three days later, and has nursed Bootsie since. The family’s veterinarian says it’s unusual but not unheard of for a dog to nurse a cat. (AP Photo/Jeff Baenen)

the materials for the moriones masks and costumes

The "Moriones" are men wearing curved wooden masks, portraying centurions from the Bible, who have made it a vow to roam the streets as penance for any grievious sin committed, or a pledge of gratitude for surviving sickness or misfortune.  Neither good-looking nor kindfaced, the masks are painted pink or red and have heavy black beards.  The men also wear brightly colored costumes with their headgears elaborately decorated with tinsel paper flowers.  Inside these fantastic costumes, the men must endure the summer heat to complete their penance or sacrifice. History

In Valencia, Spain, there is a similar celebration called Festival de Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians Festival). It is almost certain that the word "Moriones" was derived from "Moros". Another possible derivation is from the Spanish word "murió" (root:morir) meaning death. The origin of the festival is traced to Mogpog, Marinduque and the year 1807 when the parish priest of said town, Fr. Dionisio Santiago, organized it for the first time. (wikipedia)

Background

The term "Moriones" was concocted by the media in the '60s, but local inhabitants have kept the original term, "Moryonan". Many practitioners are farmers and fishermen who engage in this age-old tradition as a vow of penance or thanksgiving. Legend has it that Longinus pierced the side of the crucified Christ. The blood that spurted forth touched his blind eye and fully restored his sight. This miracle converted Longinus to Christianity and earned the ire of his fellow centurions. The re-enactment reaches its climax when Longinus is caught and beheaded. (wikipedia)

Marinduque is considered as the Lenten Mecca of the Southern Tagalog because of the Moriones Festival. Morion means “mask” or “visor,” a part of the medieval Roman armor which covers the face. Moriones, on the other hand, refers to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus. Morions roam the streets in town from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday scaring the kids, or engaging in antics or surprises to draw attention. This is a folk-religious festival that re-enacts the story of Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye. The festival is characterized by colorful Roman costumes, painted masks and helmets, and brightly-colored tunics. (http://www.visitmarinduque.com/)
