The form of Omega-3 you get from fatty fish, docosahexaenoic acid, better known as DHA, is vital for brain health. DHA is one of the main structural components of brain matter, and its ability to slow cognitive decline in older adults as well as its brain-boosting benefits for infants are well established. But for the most part, that's who takes it-older adults or pregnant mothers and infants.

A team of food and nutrition scientists at Massey University in New Zealand, led by Welma Stonehouse, Ph.D., wanted to know whether or not the average, healthy adult could benefit from DHA. In New Zealand, like in the United States, most adults don't meet the daily-recommended values for Omega-3s, including DHA. In fact, one study found that in the U.S., most adults consume one-third or less than they should. So, the team took nearly 200 adults, ages 18 to 45, that don't get their daily doses and tested the effects of a DHA supplement on brain functioning. They looked at the participants' episodic memory, like the ability to recall names and dates, working (short-term) memory, reaction time, processing speed and overall intelligence.

Health and Food / Eat This to Improve Your Memory

If you eat a lot of fish or take Omega-3 supplements to stave off memory loss in old age, we at YouBeauty salute you. If you don't: Start now! (As a bonus, the fatty acids are also bang-up wrinkle fighters. Just sayin'.) Either way, we've got some great news for all of you. While the bulk of research says you need Omega-3s to prevent bad things from happening in the future-inflammation, clogged arteries, Alzheimer's disease-a March 2013 study reveals that they can improve how well your brain works right now.

Bicbic Chua, executive director of CARH, said that Catholic bishops are reminded to be faithful to their mission as shepherds of the flock and not to engage in partisan politics especially in endorsing or maligning candidates.

She said CARH calls on church leaders to “become like responsible parents who equip their children with the necessary tools for critical thinking and responsible living and when the times comes, also take comfort in the knowledge that these capacities will enable them to make the right decision.”

Chua said CARH asserts that while demanding blind obedience is the most convenient way to make people follow their wishes, the anti-RH bishops must trust and respect the people’s choice and capacity to think and act for their own benefit and for the common good.

“That is the hallmark of steward leadership and this is what the good bishops should be demonstrating,” she stressed.

The health secretary during Joseph Estrada’s presidency said that women should be given the choice. He said prelates must not dictate what method women should use in family planning.

He said that if the misinformed women get pregnant, the church usually does not support them.

When asked if his group is supporting any candidate, Romualdez quickly nodded his head, “Yes, the candidates called by the anti-RH as Team Patay.”

Candidates of Team Patay are Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara, Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casiño, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile, former Akbayan Partylist Rep. Risa Hontiveros, Senators Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda, and former Senator Jamby Madrigal.

Some Catholic bishops quietly support RH law - ex-DOH chief Romualdez
By: Sammy F. Martin, Philippines News Agency
April 7, 2013 11:37 AM

MANILA - Catholic bishops who are not giving their opinion whether or not they favor the Reproductive Health Law are actually silently supporting the law, said former health secretary Alberto Romualdez.

Romualdez, chairman of Catholics for Reproductive Health (CARH), refused to name names but claimed these bishops are the silent movers in disseminating information on the RH Law.

“I think no one yet has come up to tell the public that they support RH Law which is contrary to the official position of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP),” Romualdez told reporters in a press conference in Quezon City.

He said that not all Catholics follow what the church says as he accused anti-RH Law movers of deliberately spreading false information about the law.

“I challenge them to reveal where they get their statistics. If they want to use statistics it should reflect and match the true picture and not twisted information and facts,” Romualdez said during the press briefing.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" Filipino Catholic groups launched a campaign Monday to try to muster millions of votes for senatorial candidates who opposed a controversial contraceptives law passed last year and prove that the church remains a force to be reckoned with in Asia's largest Catholic nation.

Catholic leader Mike Velarde said his El Shaddai group and dozens of other lay organizations are joining together to campaign in the May 13 midterm elections for pro-church candidates who could battle possible future legislation to legalize same-sex marriage, divorce and abortion.

The groups could deliver up to 6 million votes in about 3,000 Catholic communities across the country, enough to ensure the electoral victory of pro-church candidates who are vying for 12 of 24 Senate seats in next month's elections, Velarde said. The new movement wants to prove that the influential Catholic church's clout remains formidable, he said.

"The Catholic church is not dead," Velarde told a news conference. "It is alive; it has power."

5. Difficult adjustments

With such limited access to the outside world, North Koreans who do make it out often struggle to adjust. Many are paranoid, a skill that served them well at home where anyone could turn anyone else in to the police for saying the wrong thing. Some are cognitively impaired by early malnutrition. And few know anything about world history outside of North Korean propaganda.

"Education in North Korea is useless for life in South Korea," Gwak Jong-moon, principal of a boarding school for North Korean refugees, told Blaine Harden, the author of "Escape from Camp 14." "When you are too hungry, you don't go to learn and teachers don't go to teach. Many of our students have been hiding in China for years with no access to schools. As young children in North Korea, they grew up eating bark off trees and thinking it was normal."

According to Harden, the suicide rate for North Korean refugees in South Korea is two-and-a-half times that of the rate for South Koreans.

4. Daily life in North Korea

Given North Korea's secrecy, it's hard to imagine what daily life in the country is really like. In the book "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea" (Spiegel & Grau, 2009), journalist Barbara Demick interviewed North Koreans who escaped to South Korea. They describe a society tied by family (during the famine of the 1990s, parents and grandparents starved first, trying to save food for their children) and inundated with propaganda.

"In the futuristic dystopia imagined in 1984, George Orwell wrote of a world where the only color to be found was in the propaganda posters. Such is the case in North Korea," Demick writes.

It's not clear how many North Koreans buy into this propaganda. Interviews with North Koreans in China by the New York Times suggested that smuggled DVDs from South Korea have enabled average North Koreans to get a glimpse of the world outside their borders.

Very recently, foreign journalists on supervised trips in Pyongyang have been allowed 3G connections on mobile phones, enabling real-time pictures of daily city life.

3. National prison

All the fanciful and funny myths about North Korea's dictators cover up a disturbing truth, however: Some 154,000 North Koreans live in prison camps, according to South Korean government estimates. (Other international bodies put the number at closer to 200,000). There are six camps, surrounded by electrified barbed wire. Two camps allow for some "rehabilitation" and release of prisoners, according to "Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West" (Viking, 2012). The rest are prisons for life.

"Escape from Camp 14" tells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk, the only person known to have escaped from one of these camps and to have made it to the outside world. Shin was born in the camp; his father was imprisoned because his brother had abandoned North Korea for South Korea decades earlier.

Torture, malnutrition, slave labor and public execution are ways of life in the camps, which are known from satellite imagery. An Amnesty International report in 2011 estimated that 40 percent of camp prisoners die of malnutrition.

2. Mythical leaders

North Korea's ruling dynasty has always cast itself as somewhat supernatural. Founder Kim Il Sung was known as Korea's "sun," and claimed control of the weather. Along with his son Kim Jong Il's birthday, Kim Il Sung's birthday is a national holiday. After his death, Sung was embalmed and still lies in state in Pyongyang.

Kim Jong Il's mythology is no less extensive. His birth was hailed as "heaven sent" by propagandists, and state media has often touted impossible feats: He scored a perfect 300 the first time he tried bowling, and shot five holes-in-one the first time he played golf. Upon his death in 2011, the skies about the sacred mountain Paektu in North Korea allegedly glowed red.

Kim Jong Un, Kim Jong Il's son and successor has yet to have quite so many tall tales told about him, but the news media have described the new leader as "born of heaven" upon his ascension to head of state. In December 2012, North Korean state media declared the discovery of a lair supposedly belonging to a unicorn ridden by Tongmyong, the ancient mythical founder of Korea. The story wasn't an indication that North Koreans believe in literal unicorns, experts said, but a way to shore up Kim Jong Un's rule and North Korea's cred as the "real" Korea.

1. Isolation nation

The Korean peninsula has long been a battlefield for the world powers nearby. Japan controlled Korea (then one nation), until the end of World War II; after Japan's surrender, the United States and Soviet Union sliced the country along the 38th parallel, with the United States administering the south and the Soviet Union controlling the north.

This division became permanent after the United Nations failed to negotiate a reunification in 1948. The first president of North Korea, Kim Il Sung, declared a policy of "self-reliance," essentially shutting the nation off diplomatically and economically from the rest of the world.

It's a philosophy called iuche, or self-mastery. The idea is that the North Korean people must rely on themselves only. This philosophy, according to Kim Il Sung, required North Korea to maintain political and economic independence (even in the face of famine in the 1990s) and to create a strong national defense system.

Tensions are rising between North Korea and the rest of the world, as the notoriously secretive nation reportedly prepares medium-range missiles for launch.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported last week that North Korea has loaded the two missiles onto mobile launchers; in response, South Korea sent destroyers to its northern neighbor's coast. The North Korean government also says it plans to restart a major nuclear reactor it shut down as part of an international deal five years ago. And leader Kim Jong-un ordered rockets readied to strike U.S. military bases in the Pacific, not to mention the U.S. mainland. (It's not clear that North Korea's missiles have that kind of range.)

Amid this brinksmanship, North Korea remains remarkably shut off from the rest of the world. Read on for what's known about the hermit country.

The church says it now offers more than 200 community ministries and support groups for parents, families, children, couples, prisoners, addicts, and people living with HIV, depression and other illnesses.

In 2008, the church sponsored a presidential forum with Barack Obama and John McCain. Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney were invited to a similar forum last fall, but Warren canceled it several days beforehand, saying the campaign had become too uncivil.

Warren was named the top newsmaker of the year for 2009 by the Religion Newswriters Association. He gained attention that year with his invocation at Obama's inauguration, as well as with comments he made in the aftermath of California's Proposition 8, which overturned gay marriage.
#27060
The elder Warren founded Saddleback Church in 1980, according to his biography on the church website, and over the years watched it grow to 20,000 members. He and his wife, Kay, began by holding Bible studies for people who weren't regular churchgoers.

Matthew Warren was the youngest of their three children.

As Saddleback grew over the years, it spread out from its Lake Forest headquarters, 65 miles southeast of Los Angeles, adding several other campuses and ministries around Southern California.
#27061
Over the years, Matthew Warren had been treated by America's best doctors, had received counseling and medication and been the recipient of numerous prayers from others, his father said.

"I'll never forget how, many years ago, after another approach had failed to give relief, Matthew said 'Dad, I know I'm going to heaven. Why can't I just die and end this pain?'" Warren recalled.

Despite that, he said, his son lived for another decade, during which he often reached out to help others.

"You who watched Matthew grow up knew he was an incredibly kind, gentle, and compassionate man," Warren wrote. "He had a brilliant intellect and a gift for sensing who was most in pain or most uncomfortable in a room. He'd then make a bee-line to that person to engage and encourage them."
#27062
"Despite the best health care available, this was an illness that was never fully controlled and the emotional pain resulted in his decision to take his life," the church statement said.

Rick Warren, the author of the multimillion-selling book "The Purpose Driven Life," said in an email to church staff that he and his wife had enjoyed a fun Friday evening with their son. But their son then returned home to take his life in "a momentary wave of despair."

Church: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide
Associated Press â€" 6 hrs ago

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) â€" The 27-year-old son of popular evangelical Pastor Rick Warren has committed suicide at his Southern California home, Warren's church and authorities said on Saturday.

Matthew Warren struggled with mental illness, deep depression and suicidal thoughts throughout his life, Saddleback Valley Community Church said in a statement. His body was found in his Mission Viejo home Friday night, said Allison O'Neal, a supervising deputy coroner for Orange County. She declined to release the cause and manner of death pending an autopsy of the young man.

Zelkowitz wears a blood-colored jacket and dark makeup to attract passersby to Times Scare, a house of horrors near Times Square in Manhattan. So onlookers were surprised to see him in costume, chasing a black cat down the street on Saturday.

Disaster had been moving through traffic, and darting into nearby buildings, but kept getting shooed away, Zelkowitz told the paper. After a chase, Zelkowitz was able to catch Disaster and put him in a cab to the BluePearl Veterinarian clinic.

Luckily, Disaster had a microchip with all his owner's information on it. Hospital staff -- who told HuffPost Weird News that the feline is healthy -- found that the owner was New York City cop Jimmy Helliesen, who hadn't seen Disaster for two years. Disaster had taken a trip from Helliesen's home in Brooklyn, across a river and all the way to Times Square.

"I guess he wanted the bright lights and the big city -- I was shocked to see him," Helliesen told HuffPost Weird News. "I always assumed a neighbor took him in. He's a friendly cat. I thought someone was playing a joke on me when I got the call."

Helliesen takes in stray cats that he picks up on patrol, but says he's looking for other people who can provide good homes for the felines, since his wife won't allow him to take in any more than the nine he already has.

Friday's interview was part of an ongoing investigation into Broadwell's handling of classified information, a federal law enforcement source told the newspaper.

An official close to the FBI investigation told Reuters the report was "not inaccurate" but declined to elaborate. Petraeus' lawyer did not respond to requests for comment on Saturday.

Agents removed materials from Broadwell's North Carolina home in November as part of the FBI probe.

Petraeus and Broadwell have separately told investigators they did not share security secrets.

Petraeus was credited with helping pull Iraq from the brink of all-out civil war as commander there and President Barack Obama turned to him to lead U.S. forces in Afghanistan before moving to him to the CIA in 2011. (Reporting by Diane Bartz; Editing by Doina Chiacu)

FBI interviews Petraeus at his Virginia home: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - FBI agents met with former CIA Director David Petraeus at his northern Virginia home as part of an investigation into whether an ex-lover improperly handled classified documents, USA Today reported.

Petraeus resigned in November after it emerged that he had had an extra-marital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, an Army reserve intelligence officer who is also married. It was a stunning downfall for a respected Army general who led troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and was considered a potential White House contender.
