The Diamond Ring effect is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia’s Tropical North Queensland on November 14, 2012. Eclipse-hunters have flocked to Queensland’s tropical northeast to watch the region’s first total solar eclipse in 1,300 years on November 14, which occurred as the moon passed between the earth and the sun, casting a shadow path on the globe and lasting for a maximum on the Australian mainland of 2 minutes and 5 seconds. AFP / GREG WOOD

SYDNEY â€" From boats bobbing on the Great Barrier Reef, to hot air balloons hovering over the rainforest, and the hilltops and beaches in between, tens of thousands of scientists, tourists and amateur astronomers watched as the sun, moon and Earth aligned and plunged northern Australia into darkness during a total solar eclipse Wednesday.

Stubborn clouds that many feared would ruin the view parted â€" somewhat â€" in north Queensland, defying forecasts of a total eclipse-viewing bust and relieving spectators who had fanned out to glimpse the celestial phenomenon.

“Immediately before, I was thinking, ‘Are we gonna see this?’ And we just had a fantastic display â€" it was just beautiful,” said Terry Cuttle of the Astronomical Association of Queensland, who has seen a dozen total solar eclipses over the years. “And right after it finished, the clouds came back again. It really adds to the drama of it.”

Spectators whooped and clapped with delight as the moon passed between the sun and Earth, leaving a slice of the continent’s northeast in sudden darkness.

Starting just after dawn, the eclipse cast its 150-kilometer (95-mile) shadow in Australia’s Northern Territory, crossed the northeast tip of the country and was swooping east across the South Pacific, where no islands are in its direct path. A partial eclipse will be visible from east Indonesia, the eastern half of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and southern parts of Chile and Argentina. Totality â€" the darkness that happens at the peak of the eclipse â€" lasted just over two minutes in the parts of Australia where it was visible.

Gloomy weather had left many eclipse-chasers who had traveled to Australia from around the globe anxious that they wouldn’t be able to see a thing. But the clouds moved in time for many to watch as the moon blotted out the sun’s rays and cast a shadow over the tropical landscape.

Hank Harper, 61, and his two children flew from Los Angeles just to see the eclipse, and feared the clouds would ruin their adventure. The three of them boarded a hot air balloon filled with other eager tourists, crossed their fingers â€" and were rewarded with a perfect view.

“We gambled everything â€" drove through the rain and didn’t even know if the balloon was going to go up,” he said by phone from the hot air balloon as he and Harrison, 10, and Reilly, 12, watched the sun’s rays re-emerge from behind the moon while kangaroos hopped on the ground below. “It was everything I could have hoped for.”

On a dive-boat drifting along the blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, a cheer of relief erupted as the clouds moved away at the moment of total eclipse, followed by a hush as darkness fell across the water. One scuba diver floated on his back in the sea, watching the phenomenon unfold as he bobbed in the waves. Birds on a nearby island, startled by the sudden lack of light, began to stir.
“It was absolutely amazing. We were coming out this morning and there was a wee bit of cloud around and we were apprehensive,” Adam O’Malley of the Passions of Paradise dive company said by phone from his boat. “We got a full view â€" absolutely breathtaking.”

Some Queensland hotels have been booked up for more than three years and more than 50,000 people have flooded into the region to watch the solar spectacle, said Jeff Gillies, regional director of Queensland Tourism.

Skygazers crowded along palm-fringed beaches, fields and clifftops to watch the event. Fitness fanatics gathered for the Solar Eclipse Marathon, where the first rays of the sun re-emerging from behind the moon was the starting gun. Some began partying days ago at a weeklong eclipse festival.
Scientists were studying how animals respond to the eclipse, with underwater cameras capturing the effects of sudden darkness on the creatures of the Great Barrier Reef.

The next total solar eclipse won’t happen until March 2015.

Teacher kills self after losing all his money in scam
By Julie Alipala, Richel Umel
Inquirer Mindanao, Philippine Daily Inquirer

ZAMBOANGA CITYâ€"Retired school supervisor Cristituto Potayre of Pagadian City had hoped to triple his  retirement pay after 30 days when he invested in a scheme run by Pasay City-based Aman Futures Group Phils. Inc.

But Potayre’s money “vanished into thin air” instead, according to Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Antonio Cerilles.

One day, Cerilles said, apparently unable to accept his loss, Potayre committed suicide.

Marcia Agueda, 48, a Pagadian City resident, said her neighbor who was a soldier put in P300,000 that he had secured as a  loan from the Armed Forces of the Philippines Savings and Loan Association (AFPSLAI) after being convinced that he could at least double it after a certain period.

“He could only vent his ire on plants after losing his money in Aman,” Agueda said, referring to Aman Futures Group Phils. Inc.

Like the soldier, Agueda also lost money, P1.3 million, in the investment scheme that Amanâ€"owned by Manuel Amalilio, said to be a Filipino-Malaysianâ€"had trumpeted.

Potayre, Agueda and the soldier were among thousands of victims of the “double your money” scheme pulled by Aman Futures, whose operators, like the investors’ money, have disappeared.
Agueda said what could have convinced more people to invest in the scheme was that many had actually earned money from the initial cash pool.

“I had initially invested P100,000 and it doubled after the first month. I was enticed to pour in more, about P1.3 million. Many people invested with me. We lost our money,” she said.

P700,000 loan

A 53-year-old housewife lost her husband’s AFPSLAI loan of P700,000 in the Aman scheme.
But what worries her more is that her husband, a Marine officer assigned in Cotabato, enticed other Marine officers into investing in the scheme.

In all, their group lost P3.7 million in September when Aman defaulted on payments.

“(Aman) said it was only closing due to its failure to renew its permit to operate in Pagadian City,” she said. But Aman never reopened. And it did not return their money.

The housewife, who requested anonymity for personal reasons, said what made her case worse was that she had nothing to prove she invested in Aman.

“All my receipts had been turned over to an Aman staff,” she said.

Mayor Co

So when Pagadian Mayor Samuel Co announced that all those with original receipts would be issued checks, the housewife said she sighed with relief.

But the checks that Co had issued bounced for lack of funds.

Cerilles said Co could be  instrumental in the operation of Aman in Pagadian City.

“He is simply not an investor because when Aman shut down, he assured the people they could get their money back,” he said.

Mayor Co denied issuing checks to investors.

“The checks we gave out were recovered from the Aman office here. I  did not issue these checks. We just distributed,” Co told the Philippine Daily Inquirer by  phone.

Co also denied being involved in the scam, saying his name was being dragged because of politics.
Cerilles said the Aman scheme was quite a serious matter that needed a deeper investigation, which should lead to the prosecution of those behind it.

A few days ago, pandemonium erupted in Barangay (village) Kawit  in Pagadian as thousands of people  converged near the office of Aman Trading.

Aman had ceased to operate, defrauding thousands of investors of their hard-earned money, most of whom were ordinary citizens.

What made the situation more confusing is the entry of the city mayor of Pagadian, who claimed he was authorized to distribute checks issued by  Aman Trading,” Cerilles said in a letter he sent to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

“The extent of the scandal was so grave that ordinary people like farmers, teachers, vendors, fishermen, soldiers, lawyers, housewives and prominent people were victimized,” he added.

The exact number of victims was still being determined, Cerilles said, but in Pagadian City alone, it would easily reach 8,000.

Among the victims are members of the Pagadian City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Macapagal Pantaran, a chamber official, said he lost P263 million in the scheme.

“More than 90 percent of businessmen in Pagadian City have invested with Amalilio,” Pantaran said.

Quite attractive

The scheme was so attractive that even a religious group pooled its members’ money to invest in Aman.
Pastor Hipolito Paner of the Christ the Lord of Glory group said at least 1,000 members managed to raise millions and put it in Aman.

Paner urged Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas, who came to Pagadian City on Friday, to help the defrauded investors run after Amalilio and other Aman officials.

Roxas was also told that there were reports that many local governments in Mindanao also used their internal revenue allotments (IRA) to invest in Aman.

Roxas pledged to look into the report and said he would order an audit of the IRA of some local governments, including Pagadian City.

“This is sad but we will do our best to prosecute those involved,” he said.

Chief Supt. Mario Yanga, deputy director for administration of the Western Mindanao police, said the investigation into Aman’s activities was being spearheaded by the NBI.

Cebu victims

In Cebu City, three businessmen will bring charges against Aman in the hope of getting back P100 million in vanished investments.

Ayubkhan Conding, Agakhan Dianalan and Mamad Conding visited Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Director Lindeza Gavino on Tuesday to secure documents about the company.

The businessmen come from Lanao del Sur but are based in Cebu and engaged in buying and selling vehicles, cell phones and laptops.

In an interview, Dianalan said he wanted to get back the P30 million he invested because part of the money came from his relatives who, believing they would get high returns, entrusted their money to him.
Ayubkhan invested P39 million while Mamad’s investment reached P57 million.

Mamad and Ayubkhan, who are cousins, also told the Inquirer that part of the money they invested came from their relatives.

Dianalan said that they decided to invest in Aman after they learned that the mayor of Pagadian City invested in the company and even issued a business permit to the company to operate in the city.
The three had asked Cebu journalists to blur their photos and footages that showed them as they were afraid for their lives.

They recounted that in Lanao, some of the investors have threatened to kill those who put in the investment for them if their money would not be returned.

Mamad said they wanted to ensure their safety, as their relatives have been demanding the return of their money.

Dianalan said that it was a “painful” learning experience for him because he lost not only his money but also his relatives’ money.

Next time, he said, he would carefully check the background of any company that would offer lucrative schemes to him before plunking down his money.

He said he and his two companions had yet to determine what charges to bring against Aman.

Gavino said the three businessmen were the first complainants in Cebu to come to her office.

Cease and desist order

She said the local SEC office received the cease and desist order issued by the Manila head office on Oct. 16, which was posted in the Aman office in Keppel building at the Cebu Business Park.

A copy of the order was also posted on the house at 99 Espina Village B. Rodriguez St., the address given by Amalilio in Cebu City.

Gavino said the company was not incorporated in Cebu, although the incorporators were based in Cebu. With a report from Carmel Loise Matus, Inquirer Visayas

HUMINGI na ng paumanhin si Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III sa pamilya ni yumaong U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Ang sorry ni Sotto ay kanyang ginawa sa kanyang speech sa Senado.

Ani Senator Sotto, “Copying, imitation, is the highest form of flattery. If it upsets the Kennedy family, then I am sorry, but then that’s not my intention.”

“Ha? For what? Hangga’t walang official [copy of complaint], don’t say a word. Because ano ang re-react-an mo?

Health and Food / Six Health Benefits of Kissing
November 13, 2012, 05:23:48 PM

:-* :-* :-*

What makes the entire world melt away, gives you butterflies in your stomach, and makes your heart giddy with desire? A kiss, of course!

But there’s more to kissing than just a quick thrill and a little bonding with someone special. Kissing provides a range of health benefits, from increased metabolism to a longer life. “The chemicals released from a kiss heal not only physical but also emotional ‘boo-boos,’ and can keep you healthy and build up your immunity,” explains Dr. Varnado. It just goes to show you that the joys of kissing are more far-reaching than you think. Below, we list the biggest benefits from sharing a smooch with your sweetheart.

Benefit #1: Your pearly whites stay cleaner

Though it’s certainly no replacement for brushing your teeth, kissing can break down oral plaque and prevent cavities by stimulating the creation of saliva, which helps wash bacteria away from the tooth’s surface. “Kissing is nature’s cleansing process,” says Heidi Hausauer, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry. “Saliva washes out the mouth and helps remove the cavity-causing food particles that accumulate after meals.” The minerals in saliva also help rebuild tooth enamel, thereby preventing decay. So not only does kissing give you cleaner teeth, but you could actually end up saving money on your dental bills, too.

Benefit #2: Keep a younger-looking face as you age

Speaking of saving money, you can say goodbye to Botox and acid peels (or at least cut down on those pricey anti-aging treatments). Ever notice how happy, loving couples still retain an air of youth, even as they grow older? The answer could be down to frequent kissing. Sex therapist and author Dr. Ava Cadell notes that “kissing can give you a facelift. We use over 30 facial muscles while kissing, which helps to keep muscles smooth and tight and prevents your cheeks from sagging.” Laurel House, author of QuickieChick’s Cheat Sheet to Life, Love, Food, Fitness, Fashion and Finance â€" on a Less-Than-Fabulous Budget, also likens kissing to a toning session for your face: “Like working out the muscles in your abs, working out your facial muscles can help tone and tighten them, minimizing the visible signs of aging.”

Benefit #3: A revved-up metabolism

In addition to providing a facial workout, kissing can also help you lose inches from your waistline, too. As you lean in for the kiss, you may feel as though your heart’s racing. It’s not just your imagination; it is beating faster. “As the heart beats faster, it releases adrenaline and other neurotransmitters in the blood. The boost in adrenaline increases your metabolism and helps burn extra calories,” says Dr. Varnado.

During a really passionate kiss, you can burn anywhere from two to five calories per minute, which is double your normal resting rate. Dr. Cadell put this to the test on the TV show, The Doctors. By hooking a kissing couple up to a heart monitor and calorie counters, Dr. Cadell found that over the course of an hour, they burned a combined total of 575 calories â€" or 287.5 calories each.

While you certainly can’t rely on kissing to help you lose a significant amount of weight, it might give your metabolism an extra boost and help shed a pound or two.

Benefit #4: Your immune system gets a healthy boost

Just like working out, kissing can boost your immunity. So if you’re a germophobe, listen up: “Swapping spit means swapping germs, and that is nature’s natural form of vaccination,” explains Dr. Varnado. “Being exposed to others’ germs causes your body makes antibodies against those germs, which can in turn lead to immunity and prevent illness.” This all holds true as long as you’re not kissing anyone with any diseases or cold sores present in his or her mouth, so make sure the object of your affection isn’t coming down with the flu before you pucker up.

Benefit #5: Improved mood and decreased stress levels overall

Ever notice how you feel after a good make-out session? It’s like you’re floating on cloud nine, all your cares melt away, and you feel like you could do anything. That’s because kissing releases nature’s antidepressant, oxytocin. Dr. Joshua Gizersky, founder and medical director of Vitality Logix Internal Medicine, says that “a passionate kiss will spike oxytocin, leading to better sex and orgasm.”

But kissing doesn’t just increase the production of feel-good chemicals in our bodies â€" it lowers our cortisol and cholesterol levels, too. “A study of cohabiting and married couples showed that an increased frequency of kissing decreases stress and cholesterol levels. Stress is a well-known risk factor for heart disease,” says Dr. Varnado. And a healthy heart means a longer life!

Benefit #6: A natural source of pain relief

Last but not least, kissing provides a natural form of pain relief. Before reaching for an aspirin the next time you’ve got a headache, grab your honey and lay on a big smooch instead. Dr. Varnado notes that “kissing releases natural chemicals in the body called endorphins, which can be more powerful than morphine to relieve pain” â€" without the all the negative side effects of using a narcotic, of course.

It seems that you already have all the tools and chemicals necessary to improve your health, feel better, and manage stress… right inside your own body. And all you need to do is plant a few kisses first!

Photos Unlimited / Green Lake in Austria
November 12, 2012, 09:17:17 PM

This is the Green Lake in Tragoess, Styria, which sits at the foot of snow-capped Hochschwab mountains.

Throughout the frozen winter months the area is almost completely dry and is used as a county park. It is a particular favourite site for hikers.

But as soon as the temperatures begin to rise in spring, the ice and snow on the mountaintops begins to melt and runs down into the basin of land below.

The park fills up with ice-cold crystal clear water, which gets its distinctive green colouring from the grass and foliage beneath.

The water levels rise from about one or two metres deep in the winter to as much as 10 metres in the late spring and early summer.

The waters are at their highest in June when it becomes a mecca for divers keen to explore the rare phenomenon, before the waters recede at the end of July.

Green Lake is actually a park in Austria however in the summer it fills with water and turns into lake. At autumn and winter it turns into a park again.

Lilium "Stargazer" (the Stargazer lily) is a hybrid lily of the Oriental group. Oriental lilies are known for their fragrant perfume, blooming mid-to-late summer. Stargazers are easy to grow and do best in full sunlight. They have a fast growth rate and should be planted in full sun in well drained loamy or sandy soil. When mature, Stargazers can grow to a height of 36 inches with a spread of 12 to 16 inches with 4 to 5 flowers per stem.

The Stargazer lily was created in 1978 by Leslie Woodriff, a lily breeder in California. Woodriff called the new cross "Stargazer," because the blooms faced towards the sky. Known for its striking white, red, and pink petals, and heavenly scent, this lily has become a favorite for many occasions.

The ASPCA reports this plant as being toxic to cats. They are said to cause vomiting, inappetence, lethargy, kidney failure, and even death. Cats are the only species known to be affected.

This flower is known to symbolize devotion.

"Life can be like a roller coaster. And just when you think you've had enough, and you're ready to get off the ride and take the calm, easy merry-go round, you change your mind, throw your hands in the air and ride the roller coaster all over again. That's exhilaration... that's living a bit on the edge... that's being alive." -- Stacey Charter --

Tinuod ni Maam? ;D

yup it's in New Zealand..

The Waikato Region

The town of Matamata in the Waikato with it’s rolling hills and emerald green grass was the perfect setting for the peaceful Shire region of Middle-earth, the home of the village of Hobbiton. This area of New Zealand is one of the richest agricultural and pastoral areas in the world and is characterised as a large fertile basin through which the Waikato River flows. The Hobbiton movie set has primarily been returned to its natural state, however hobbit holes and other distinctive land marks such as ‘the party tree’ still remain and can be viewed as part of a Hobbiton tour. The Waikato region also offers superb caving and black water rafting.

Salar is salt flat in Spanish. Uyuni originates from the Aymara language and means a pen (enclosure), and is also the name for a town of 10,600 people (which serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Salar). Thus Salar de Uyuni can be loosely translated as a salt flat with enclosures, the latter possibly referring to the "islands" of the Salar; or as "salt flat at [the town named] 'pen for animals'".
Aymara legend tells that the mountains Tunupa, Kusku and Kusina, which surround the Salar, were giant people. Tunupa married Kusku, but Kusku ran away from her with Kusina. Grieving Tunupa started to cry while breast-feeding her son. Her tears mixed with milk and formed the Salar. Many locals consider the Tunupa an important deity and say that the place should be called Salar de Tunupa rather than Salar de Uyuni

Salar de Uyuni (or Salar de Tunupa) is the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 sq mi). It is located in the Potosí and Oruro departments in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, and is at an elevation of 3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above mean sea level. The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It is covered by a few meters of salt crust, which has an extraordinary flatness with the average altitude variations within one meter over the entire area of the Salar. The crust serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium. It contains 50 to 70% of the world's lithium reserves, which is in the process of being extracted. The large area, clear skies and the exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar an ideal object for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. The Salar serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano and is a major breeding ground for several species of pink flamingos. Salar de Uyuni is also a climatological transitional zone, for towering tropical cumulus congestus and cumulus incus clouds that form in the eastern part of the massive salt flat during the summer, cannot permeate beyond the salt flat's considerably more arid western edges, near the Chilean border and the Atacama Desert.

6 ex-education execs in Davao get 12 years for graft
August 6, 2008 6:58pm

MANILA, Philippines - The Sandiganbayan has convicted a former regional director of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (now DepEd) of graft in connection with the fraudulent purchase of construction materials for an elementary school building in 1991.

Facing a 12-year imprisonment sentence is Venancio R. Nava, former regional director of the DECS-Region XI (Davao).

Aside from Nava, also convicted by the anti-graft court on the same case were former DECS-Region XI Asst. Regional Director Susana B. Cabahug, Administrative Officer Aquilina B. Granada, Finance Officer Carlos B. Bautista, Administrative Officer Edilberto P. Madria, supply officer Felipe Pancho and private defendant Jesusa dela Cruz, president of private supplier Giomiche Inc.

The accused former education officials were also ordered to jointly reimburse DECS the sum of P512,967.69 corresponding to the overpricing in construction materials based on computations by government auditors.

The verdict was handed down last August 1.

The Sandiganbayan said there was sufficient evidence proving that there was no public bidding conducted for the construction project and the accused merely simulated the documents and the process to make it appear that procurement rules were observed.

“To make things worse, it was also indubitably established that… the accused overpriced the construction supplies and materials in the amount of P512,967.69 to the disadvantage and prejudice of the government,” the court noted.

During the trial, the defendants argued that the project was urgent and holding a public bidding would have caused long delays.

Likewise they claimed that while local suppliers offer ‘reasonable’ prices for construction materials, they cannot meet the required volume of supplies.

The anti-graft court, however, said the credibility of these claims was “doubtful,” saying the COA auditors who conducted the re-canvass were “public officers with special technical knowledge and trainings... (hence) must be accorded great weight in all aspects.”

“The prosecution was able to prove, with testimonial and documentary evidence, taken individually and collectively, that unravel the chain of processes that show the involvement of all the accused in a scheme successfully maneuvered by the concerted efforts of these public officers led by accused Nava who was holding the highest position, to defraud the coffers of the government,” the court said. - GMANews.TV
