O Gentlest heart of Jesus,
ever present in the Blessed Sacrament,
ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory
have mercy on the soul of Thy departed servant.
Be not severe in Thy judgment but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames,
and do Thou O merciful Saviour send the angels to conduct Robert Matson to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

Incline Thine ear, O Lord, unto our prayers,
wherein we humbly pray Thee
to show Thy mercy upon the soul of Thy servant Robert Matson, whom Thou hast commanded to pass out of this world,
that Thou wouldst place him in the region of peace and light,
and bid him be partaker with Thy Saints.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

"We have loved him during life,
let us not abandon him,
until we have conducted him by our prayers
into the house of the Lord." Saint Ambrose

-Emily Dickinson

The last night that she lived,
It was a common night,
Except the dying; this to us
Made nature different.

We noticed smallest things, --
Things overlooked before,
By this great light upon our minds
Italicized, as 't were.

That others could exist
While she must finish quite,
A jealousy for her arose
So nearly infinite.

We waited while she passed;
It was a narrow time,
Too jostled were our souls to speak,
At length the notice came.

She mentioned, and forgot;
Then lightly as a reed
Bent to the water, shivered scarce,
Consented, and was dead.

And we, we placed the hair,
And drew the head erect;
And then an awful leisure was,
Our faith to regulate.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Matson,

Forgive me for not writing to you in person, for the tears that well in my eyes prevent me from writing in paper and pen. It has been almost 3 years since we met at Ford Chapel in Allegheny College to celebrate the life of Rob, and i presented to you that white rose as a token of mourning and of my thoughts and prayers for your family and for my good friend.

I have tried to write to you both these past 3 years, but could not gather the strength to deliver it. In fact, i wanted so bad to visit you both. It has been a wish of mine to visit Robert's grave and lay a boquet of roses for him, and recite a poem that we both discussed about (and in great length) during our tenure as collegians of Allegheny. I trust that Providence will someday take me to that route.

As i write this letter to you, i ask for your forgiveness for not being able to do this personally, and i know you will find this. Because i know that you visit this thread. Please accept my prayers, my condolences on the death of your son, my good friend.

He was too young. But , i am sure that he is at peace now.

Please accept my thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Lorenzo Lucino

Robert. I'm thinking of you. I talked to you this time 3 years ago. The last time I laid my eyes on you. The last time we exchanged words.
My heart aches remembering you, my dear friend. Time is supposed to heal old wounds, but your death is as fresh this time of the year.

You passed this world on the early mornings of November 19, 2007.

You are always in my prayers, Rob. I miss you and love you.

My primary doctor is a good friend of mine, a Cebuano. Ngotngot, dok!!! (I can't say that with an American!!!)  ;D. My nephrologist is another Pinoy. My anesthesiologist is another Tagalog. We played golf together (when I used to play). I'm a die-hard Pinoy patient. I hope I remain "die-hard" not dead. Bwahahaha  :-\

Hahaha!

My medical director jokes with me. He says that I look like a 'surgeon-type' kono. "You're not gonna be another know-it-all Filipino Surgeon are you?" he joked one time. I smirked.

LOL!!

Seriously tho, in defense of Filipino doctors: I believe that Filipino doctors are just the best. Filipinos are not lazy, we are hard working, consistent in work, and are quick to 'over-time'.

Not just Doctors, but also Nurses. Filipino Nurses make precedent. If you go to any ICU or CCU or ER in any major American Hospital; the senior/ head nurse is a Filipina/ Filipino. :P

The last time I was back home to the Philippines was in 1998, and my recent trip back this summer 2010 was a culture shock for me (yet again!).

The Tagbilaran that I remembered was not the Tagbilaran that I came back to. Tagbilaran had developed exceedingly fast within 12 years. The new high rises, paved roads (the national highway around bohol was a great sight!)

Even my visit to Cebu in July and August was a shocker for me.

The Philippines truly has developed and has modernized.

Inspiration & Hope / Promise Yourself
November 18, 2010, 02:30:50 PM
Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can
disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to
every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel like there is
something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your
optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best,
and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on the
greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give
every living person you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, and too
strong for fear, and to happy to permit the
presence of trouble.

In the United States:

There are over 50,000 Indian doctors practicing medicine.
There are over 20,000 Filipino doctors practicing medicine.

Isn't it amazing that despite the fact that India's population is 10x that of the Philippines, the amount of Indian doctors in the United States is only 2x that of Filipino doctors.

An Indian medical intern once told me (and I paraphrase): "It's really amazing how you Filipinos have reshaped the American Medical System. Whenever we think of 'Nursing' an image of a Filipino Nurse comes to mind. Or when one thinks of 'Doctor' an image of a Filipino or Indian physician comes to mind."

I find the traditional theories of economics coming to light. The former colonies are beginning to surpass the colonizers.

For example; India and Great Britain. Two centuries ago, the Indian Subcontinent was ruled and lorded over by the English East Indian Company, then later being incorporated into the British Empire outright. Since India's independence in 1947, the subcontinent has tripled its population, its economy has increased and the lives of its citizenry (tho it has a long way to go) have improved, generally speaking. The GNP of India has overlapped that of its former colonizer, The United Kingdom.

The reasons for the Indian economic and populatory resilience is not due to its natural resources, but because of the resourfullness of the Indian people. India, as a former English colony, have taken advantage of their English mandatory language skills and the profound importance of education for the people. Indians are leaving India for abroad to seek positions in engineering, nursing, medicine, teaching, financial and the like (sounds quite familiar doesn't it?)

30 years ago when the People's Republic of China instituted its Open Door Policy, the world thought that China would be the temporal leader of the growing third world, in fact, the Chinese were ridiculed for their supposed inferior production lines, poor understanding of capitalism and the free trade market.

Now, over 30 years since China opened its doors to the world market, her economy, the 2nd largest in the world (and recently just surpassed that of Japan's) she is set to become the 2nd super power in the world. She already supports the United States with the unprecedented financial bailouts ; which literally puts to mind the saying, "you'll never know who will save your skin.."

Thirty years ago, China was considered a backwards communist state with no understanding of capitalism.
At present, the West can only awe in envy to see the level of economic growth she is experiencing; with over 250 million Chinese middle class and growing. China finds itself being courted by western bankers and investors ; which brings to mind the old days when China (Zhong Guo) was courted by the lesser kingdoms for trade rights. The United States, the current world hyper power, stands alert and almost frantic in its place in the world order. A former third world nation (CHINA) is soon to ascend military and economic superpowerdom.

The Philippines falls in the same category; she is rising with the rest of the Asian-Pacific Region.

Considering the Christmas Liturgical Year is at hand, the following Christmas Canticle Poem written by Edna St. Vincent Millay seems appropriate.
I hope all of Tubag Bohol Dot Com (and passerby readers) enjoy it. An Advanced Merry Christmas to All!

The Christmas Canticle

by: Edna St. Vincent Millay

The Angel:
Thou sinful soul, how wilt thou feel,
on Christmas Even when the oxen kneel,
For all thy vows to Christ so dear,
Which thou didst break in this bad year?

Man:
Full of fear- oh, full of fear!
I will fall to my knees in yellow straw;
I will clasp my hands in terror and awe!
I will lift my tears and to Mary appeal-
On Christmas Eve when the oxen kneel!

The Angel:
And dost thou think that Mary will hear,
And wash thee clean of the dirty year?-
Wherein thou didst lie and slay and steal?

Man:
Aye, for the sake of Christ so dear!
She will cook my brow. She will cleanse and heal,-
On Christmas Eve, when the oxen kneel!

The Angel:
And what wilt thou do for Mary, then,
In daylight, out in the world of men?

Man:
I will try hard not to be bad again.
I will try hard not to be bad again.

The Angel:
And when thou art tempted- wilt thou go wrong?

Man:
Jesus will help me, and make me strong;
And see that by me no evil is done.

The Angel:
Then Hail Mary and Her Little Son!

The Angel and Man:
Then Hal Mary and Her Little Son!

Kini sija, graduate of University of the Philippines School of Medicine; trained ni sija in Austria for surgical procedures. Pero ning balik sa Pilipinas. He gives talks every year on the experiences of being a medical student, a surgeon-physician, and his background as a BOLANON.

Ang BOLANON, pariho ta sa maga JUDEO. We are everywhere kono. And wherever we are, we are successful in what we do. Ang rason ani kai ang BOLANON ay:

1. Negosyante
2. Industrialisimo
3. Isug nga trabajante
4. Mo sakripisyo
5. Fiscally Responsible
6. Observant
7. Firm kaajo

So true, Julius! Ang Ginoo mo hatag ug grasya sa tawo nga mo trabaho ug mo sakripisyo para sa ijang pamilya. Kining difficult times ug difficult obstacles, they are meant to be beaten and used as a lesson, not to keep us down.

If my grandfather was complacent he would have stayed in Pintuyan, Southern Leyte and lived a life of a fisherman and a coconut farmer, however, at age 8 years old, he boarded a banka and went to Cebu to make a life as a businessman, then finding a chance to go to Bohol (by God's Providence...) and raised 7 children with his wife.

He was born poor, came from a very poor and uneducated family (daghang pordoy sa southern leyte, luoy kaajo ang kinabuhi didto...), but he did not let his natural circumstance keep him down. By God's Grace and by God's guidance, he made a living, and raised his family to the best of his ability...

And that is a lesson for us all.

#26967
My paternal grandfather and my paternal grandmother come to mind.

My grandfather, Rustico A. Lucino, was a successful businessman who had no formal education (he said he was a graduate of U.E; university of experience!) and my grandmother was an educated teacher (but was a housewife).

They had 7 children. All of them finished college. 5 Boys and 2 Girls. 3 of the boys graduated are engineers (civil, civil & electrical), one boy became a nurse, 1 girl became a nurse, 1 girl went to law, and 1 boy became a physician-surgeon.

Again, all 7 went to school; all 7 are successful professionals.

then a student yelled out, "but Dr! excessive sleep may distort the melatonin levels and dopamine levels, and thus lead to psychosis and possibly manifest in depressive episodes!"

I'm late to this, but very intrigued by these findings. It's ironic that women
prefer the effeminate man, because as an effeminate gay man, I find just
the opposite. Gay men do not prefer the man with a feminine demeanor,
such as myself. We are, rather, considered something of an embarrassment
in the larger gay community. Perhaps because, with our feminine demeanor,
we are a stereotype of the gay male. And this is something many gay men
are trying to overcome.

Just got back home from IKEA. Purchased a full-sized Sultan Bed. I bought the bed slats, frames, and the full sized mattress as well. Taking it up 3 flights of stairs was..quite a fun time (sarcasm).

Now enjoing (a break) my mexican kitchen style non-salted , gluten-free nachos , and hot salsa to boot.

Ah, life is good.  :)

Jan, if you are having sleep problems, then that is the underlying mechanism of your depressive episode(s). Decreased sleep patterns (REM, NREM etc) leads to an unstable circadian rythm, which produces abnormal levels of serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin. This translates into depressive episodes.

I would suggest you ask to see a neurologist to check up. If you have sleep obstruction such as apnea etc, then I would suggest you ask your GP to refer you to a pulmonologist.

All the best,
Lorenz

Poems and Poets / Blazing Accusation
November 16, 2010, 02:49:30 AM
(a beautiful poem written during the height of the racial demonstrations in the United States for racial equality; location: Birmingham, Alabama)

by: May Miller

Too early a death for those who young
have lost prophecy in blast and flame.
The broken have been assembled
as best could be to pose for burial.
The man in bleak authority intones
the word that cannot tell
when last the girls stood singing
under the sweetest tree,
how remote from nightmare
they giggled secrets believing
death was the end for the old.

After the moans are choked
and the flowers gone petalless,
the girls will be with greatgrandparents,
themselves not long in that last room.
Mothers and fathers,
grandfathers and grandmothers
still pace the waking street
though few are the footfalls
that echo where the children lie.

But walk they will
the sixty-odd more years they're due.
Beyond allotted time and self
the four of them will go
down red gullies of guilt
and alleys of dark memories,
through snagging fields of scarecrows,
and up an unforgetting hill
to blazon accusation of an age.

I might remind some individuals here that the police department in Michigan (particularly in around Detroit) are known for their racial descrimination and police brutality towards african-americans and even some minorities; again, there is a rather high amount of crime and police-related crime in that state.

So again, the United States (yes, quite shocking) is not itself free of this phenomenon. :)
