Manila ordinance pushes ban on ‘riding in tandem’

By Erika Sauler
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Thursday, December 6th, 2012

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Men riding in pairs on motorcycles on the streets of Manila, beware.

You could be jailed for a month and fined P3,000 if an ordinance proposed by a Manila councilor seeking the prohibition of so-called riding-in tandem on motorcycles in Manila is passed.

Councilor Rodolfo Lacsamana proposed the ban in a bid to deter crimes in the city, saying violators will be “under suspicion of planning a criminal act.”

The draft ordinance authored by Lacsamana cited the “unsolved crimes” of “countless and unrestrained acts of, day and night, snatching of bags, jewelry and cell phones” perpetrated by criminals riding in tandem.

;)   The contents of the vapour emissions have not been thoroughly studied

;)   Health effects on users, especially long-time users, have not been studied

;)   Could undermine public smoking bans

Jonas Cuenin New York Photographer and e-smoker

The taste is better than real cigarettes and you don't disturb people because it doesn't smell.

You can smoke inside in public places. I smoke in restaurants, I smoke in bars. I even ended up smoking in the subway.

I think it's healthier - it doesn't give you cancer. I smoked some [tobacco] cigarettes on one night three weeks ago, and I was disgusted by it, actually.

Electronic cigarettes challenge anti-smoking efforts

By Daniel Nasaw BBC News Magazine, Washington

A smoker puffs an e-cigarette in Germany, which has moved to regulate them like pharmaceuticals

A new TV advert for a brand of electronic cigarettes marks the first time in decades cigarettes of any sort have been promoted on US television. Anti-smoking campaigners fear the rapid growth of tobacco-free cigarettes could undermine years of successful anti-smoking efforts.

A handsome actor poses and struts on a beach in a stylishly shot black-and-white television spot. He puts the cigarette to his lips, takes a puff, and exhales a rich flume.

"Blu lets me enjoy smoking without it affecting the people around me, because it's vapour not tobacco smoke," says Stephen Dorff, the scruffy heartthrob star of The Immortals.

"We're all adults here, it's time we take our freedom back."

The Daily News reports that various city organizations have attempted to help Hillman. Barbara Brancaccio, a spokesperson for the city's Homeless Service said, "He [Hillman] has a history of turning down services."

The man's brother, Kirk Hillman, told the Daily News that he hasn't heard from Jeffrey since January. "We love our brother very much," Kirk Hillman said. "Our door is always open to him, but this is a lifestyle he's chosen."

Jeffrey Hillman told The New York Times that he is grateful for the boots from Officer DePrimo. "I want to thank everyone that got onto this thing. I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. It meant a lot to me. And to the officer, first and foremost."

a little reality check...

Barefoot homeless man not actually homeless

By Mike Krumboltz, Yahoo! News | The Lookout â€" Tue, Dec 4, 2012

The homeless man who was given a pair of boots by a kindhearted New York City police officer apparently isn't homeless. According to the New York Daily News, Jeffrey Hillman, 54, has an apartment in the Bronx that is paid for via a combination of rent vouchers, Social Security, and military veteran benefits.

Hillman and Officer Lawrence DePrimo became Internet sensations after a visiting tourist posted a photo of DePrimo giving Hillman a pair of boots from a nearby Sketchers store. The photo went viral. Yesterday, we ran a story about how Hillman was spotted around New York City, again barefoot.

Those shoes are hidden," Hillman told the New York Times. "They are worth a lot of moneyâ€"I could lose my life."

New stunning nighttime views of Earth unveiled

Associated Press
06 December 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) â€" Twinkling city lights, raging wildfires and colorful auroras are lit up in new dazzling nighttime views of the Earth.

The new images released Wednesday are courtesy of a newly launched NASA-NOAA satellite that's equipped with a sensor to observe the planet at night.

There's the Nile River bathed in city lights. A map of the United States shows the populated East Coast illuminated. Light from fishing boats can be pinpointed.

The satellite also captured the glow from natural sources including moonlight, northern lights and naturally-occurring fires.

After Superstorm Sandy made landfall in late October, hard-hit New Jersey, lower Manhattan and the Rockaways appeared dark in the satellite images compared with surrounding areas â€" the result of widespread power outages.

small world.  my sister knows naomi.  i believe they were classmates at the holy spirit school.

i will show these pictures to my banana republic.  he can analyze strokes much better than i can.  we can look for this artist in tagbilaran one day.  i hope we can afford his work.

ending of the story: the next day, i had a windfall.  nakadawat kog honorarium nga dako-dako for a talk on journalism.  feeling rich ko nga wa damha.  scheduled ko nga mo-lecture tuod; wa lang ko mag-expect nga naa diay koy madawat kay kasagaran ug ingon ana t.y. ra man ko.

moral lesson: bisan kinsa maluoy gyod diay.  ang mga tawong uchisera nga nagtapok ato puro naguol.  helpless lang gyod sila.  hasta tong mga tindera nga akong kontra, listo nga ni-sensilyo.  bilib ko.  we humans have our hearts in the right place.  (kadtong nangawat ug pobreng labaw di to siya tawo, hayop to.)
#26874

The company said the ideal time for a scan is about eight or nine months into the pregnancy.

For those who would like a less pricey version, the company will offer a 3D model of the face of the fetus for 50,000 yen in December.

It will use ultrasound images taken at a medical clinic in Tokyo that is working with the company.

FASOTEC, originally a supplier of devices including 3D printers, uses a layering technique to build up three-dimensional structures.

The technique has been touted as a solution to localised manufacture on a small scale.

Parents-to-be in Japan can buy 3D printed model of fetus

EXPECTANT parents in Japan who can't wait to show the world what their baby will look like can now buy a 3D model of the fetus to share with their friends.

Based on an MRI scan, a 3D printer can create a 9-centimetre resin model of the white fetus, encased in a transparent block in the shape of the mother's body.

"As it is only once in a lifetime that you are pregnant with that child, we received requests for these kind of models from pregnant women who... do not want to forget the feelings and experience of that time," said Tomohiro Kinoshita of FASOTEC, the company offering the service.

The 3D model is called Shape of an Angel and costs 100,000 yen ($A1171).

It also comes with a miniature version that could be a nice adornment to a mobile phone, he added. Many young women in Japan add decorations to their phone strap.
