Promulgation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception:

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX officially declared the Immaculate Conception a dogma of the Church, which means that all Christians are bound to accept it as true. As the Holy Father wrote in the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus, "We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful." understanding the immaculate conception at its simplest:

...the Immaculate Conception refers to the dogma in the Catholic religion that Mary was born without original sin on her soul.  “Being always free from original sin, she was from the start filled with the sanctifying grace that would normally come with Baptism after birth.”  The term refers to her immaculate conception â€" being pure and free from all sin, and, therefore, chosen to be the mother of Jesus.

The term has nothing to do with the Virgin Birth of Jesus. (http://www.idontgetit.us/)

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is universally celebrated on December 8, nine months before the feast of the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated on September 8.

It is the patronal feast day of Spain, Korea, Portugal, Nicaragua, Brazil, the Philippines and the United States of America. It is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church as well as a few other closely related Christian churches.

Repeats of the show are all you'll find nowadays -- but it's still compelling television -- maybe even more compelling today simply because America just might get nuked by terrorists and rogue nations that support them.

america nuked hiroshima and nagasaki.  not that a taste of one's own medicine is wished here, but japan, with memorials in hiroshima and nagasaki, and the japanese are there--- stronger, better and more resilient and polite than ever as a country and as a nation.

How Meth Destroys the Body

What makes methamphetamine such an attractive high? Meth users report that after taking the drug they experience a sudden "rush" of pleasure or a prolonged sense of euphoria, as well as increased energy, focus, confidence, sexual prowess and feelings of desirability. However, after that first try, users require more and more of the drug to get that feeling again, and maintain it. With repeated use, methamphetamine exacts a toll on the mind and body, robbing users of their physical health and cognitive abilities, their libido and good looks, and their ability to experience pleasure.(http://www.pbs.org/)

Photos Unlimited / Re: 2012 White House Christmas card
December 07, 2012, 02:40:07 PM
To make the snow look realistic, Kabel used a tool most people have inside their bathrooms: a toothbrush.

"It splatters so it looks like snow," Kabel said.

The White House won't be paying Kabel for her portrait of Bo ("I'm living on glory," she said when asked about compensation), but she and her husband will attend the White House holiday party on Dec. 18.

She sees meeting the president and Mrs. Obama as a highlight of the trip, but she is also excited to do something many White House guests are familiar with: celebrity watch.

"I've never seen anyone famous, so I'm like, who will be at the party?" Kabel said. "I'm looking for anybody."

Kabel's own canine companion, Beans - a Boston Terrier/Pug mix - follows her to the studio each day and sits by her side while she earns her livelihood painting, drawing and printing.

"It's not like we're sitting here chatting or anything," Kabel said. "But when I don't bring him to the studio I constantly am peeking over my shoulder to look where he would normally be. When he's not there I feel his absence."

The dog in the portrait is sporting a scarf, something Kabel says was an addition she made to the photo the White House sent out for her as part of the competition.

"They asked us to do an interpretation of the photo, and I did need to change a couple of things," Kabel said. "Black animals are difficult to represent and have them read as three-dimensional."

Photos Unlimited / Re: 2012 White House Christmas card
December 07, 2012, 02:37:56 PM
"I had very, very, very low expectations about it in the first place," Kabel told ABC News. She said her husband kept asking her afterwards, "Did I dream that you're going to do this?"

"No, I had the same dream," she would reply. "I'm pretty sure this is true."

It has been a big year for the two-time Obama supporter. Kabel's husband's band opened for Bruce Springsteen at President Obama's rally in Des Moines, his last rally before election night. At that point, the couple knew her painting had been selected, but had to keep that secret.

The black-and-white illustration features the Obama family Portuguese water dog. It shows a jaunty Bo, knee-deep in snow in front of a blurred White House.

Story Behind White House Holiday Card

By Sarah Parnass | ABC OTUS News
07 December 2012

ABC OTUS News - Story Behind White House Holiday Card (ABC News)

Larassa Kabel never expected to be chosen when she submitted her painting to be considered for the White House holiday card this September.

The Des Moines, Iowa, artist said "it was a very surreal moment," when she got the call from the White House secretary's office while cooking pizza for her family one night, hearing that first lady Michelle Obama had chosen her piece.

The White House released the 2012 Christmas card, painted by Kabel, this morning.

History / Re: Hitler's Bunker and the Ruins of Berlin
December 07, 2012, 12:42:21 AM

Vandivert (above, in the early 1940s) was the first Western photographer to gain access to Hitler’s Führerbunker, or “shelter for the leader,” after the fall of Berlin, and a handful of his pictures of the bunker and the ruined city were published in LIFE magazine in July 1945. A few of those images are republished here; most of the pictures in this gallery, however, were never published in LIFE and vividly illustrate the surreal, disturbing scenes Vandivert encountered in the bunker and in the streets of the vanquished city beyond the bunker’s walls.

In his typed notes to his editors in New York, Vandivert described in detail what he saw. For example, of the sixth slide in this gallery, he wrote, “Pix of [correspondents] looking at sofa where Hitler and Eva shot themselves. Note bloodstains on arm of soaf [sic] where Eva bled. She was seated at far end … Hitler sat in middle and fell forward, did not bleed on sofa. This is in Hitler’s sitting room.” Remarkable stuff â€" but, it turns out, it’s only about half right. Historians are now quite certain that Braun committed suicide by biting a cyanide capsule, rather than by gunshot â€" meaning the bloodstains on the couch might well be Hitler’s after all.

A NOTE ON THE PHOTOGRAPHER: William Vandivert â€" who at 6 ft. 5 in. held the distinction of being the tallest photographer on staff â€" shot for LIFE from the late 1930s through the late ’40s. In 1947 he joined Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour in founding the legendary Magnum photo agency. (Rita Vandivert, his wife, served as Magnum’s first president.) William Vandivert died in 1992.

Hundreds of thousands perished in the Battle of Berlin â€" including untold numbers of civilian men, women and children â€" while countless more were left homeless in the ruins. But it was two particular deaths, those of Adolf Hitler and his longtime companion and (briefly) wife Eva Braun, in a sordid underground bunker on April 30, 1945, that signaled the true, final fall of the Third Reich.

Unpublished. In the typed notes (see next slide) that William Vandivert sent to LIFE's New York offices after getting to Berlin, he described his intense, harried visit to Hitler's bunker: "Note and note well," he wrote. "These pix were made in the dark with only candle for illumination ... Our small party of four beat all rest of mob who came down about forty minutes after we got there." Between August 1940 and March 1945 American, RAF and Soviet bombers launched more than 350 air strikes on Berlin; tens of thousands of civilians were killed, and countless buildings â€" apartment buildings, government offices, military installations â€" were obliterated. Vandivert, LIFE reported, “found almost every famous building [in Berlin] a shambles. In the center of town GIs could walk for blocks and see no living thing, hear nothing but the stillness of death, smell nothing but the stench of death.”

In April 1945, as Russian and German troops fought â€" savagely, street by street â€" for control of the German capital, it became increasingly clear that the Allies would win the war in Europe. Not long after the two-week battle ended, 33-year-old LIFE photographer William Vandivert was on the scene, photographing Berlin’s devastated landscape.

The measure also cited the case of Polytechnic University of the Philippines vice president Augustus Cesar, who was reportedly shot dead by two motorcycle-riding assailants in October last year.

“This heinous crime is far from being isolated as there have been previous cases where men riding in tandem brazenly killed their unsuspecting victims with impunity,” it said.

Just recently, a Manila cop was shot dead when he flagged down two men on a motorcycle. A Chinese trader was also killed in a robbery last week with the same modus.

The proposed ordinance added that motorcycles were “fast, sleek and easy to maneuver even in heavy traffic being capable of sprinting away through narrow alleys to elude pursuing police vehicles.”
