Rodriguez then proposed that sex education be taught to senior high school students aged 16 to 17 years old instead of Grade 6 pupils. Lagman rejected the same.

The period of amendments was terminated at 7:43 p.m., almost three hours after discussion on the RH bill resumed.

The roll of members was called thereafter. Out of the 287 lawmakers, 217 members responded to the call and quorum was declared. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)

Before the vote, the chamber breezed through the proposed amendments compared to last week wherein only the first four pages of the substitute bill were tackled.

Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, the main proponent of the RH bill, rejected the proposed amendment of Cagayan de Oro Representative Rufus Rodriguez deleting an entire section on mandatory sex education.

The younger Garcia said there are “unconstitutional burdens” imposed to the local government units under the RH measure.

Del Mar, for her part, said “there is something wrong when bill disrespects religious beliefs and reduces to plan argument denial of right to life.”

Among those who voted for the affirmative is Negros Occidental Representative Jules Ledesma, who is among top absentees of the House.

The RH bill needs 109 “yes” votes for it to pass the second reading.

Representative Manny Pacquiao, who got standing ovation from colleagues and observers in the gallery, said what happened in Las Vegas strengthened his firm belief on the sanctity of life.

“From the bottom of my heart thank you for your prayers for my last fight on Las Vegas,” Pacquiao said before he voted “no.”

Cebu Representatives Eduardo Gullas, Pablo Garcia and son Pablo John Garcia, and Rachel Del Mar also voted “no” to RH bill approval.

Twitter user @probably_no_god said "my tears fell when RH Bill passed in 2nd reading, but I completely trust God's plan. It is not about religion, it is about faith."

Others, who said they are "advocates for life", are looking forward to the third reading and  hope that some of those who favored the bill would change their mind.

Couples for Christ (@CFChrist) said "The laws of the Lord are greater than the laws of any land."

Six hours ago, following the final tally of the House vote, Lea Salonga said "and just like that, my heart is filled with hope."

TV host Bianca Gonzalez also tweeted 10 hours ago that "it's not about just giving birth! It's about caring for the child and giving him or her good quality of life!"

Meanwhile, the hashtag #NotoRHBill, although not among top trending topics, generated tweets criticizing the vote.
#26417
Celebrities who have been very vocal in their support for the bill have hailed the House's vote.

In 2010, tour guide Carlos Celdran, who held up a "Damaso" white board inside the Manila Cathedral during a mass led by then Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and was subsequently arrested for pulling the stunt, thanked the "Virgin of Guadalupe."

In a comment on his post, he said "well, she (Virgin of Guadalupe) is the image of a pregnant Mary. I'd like to think she favored the bill."

"He is very clingy," she said. "Darwin is like a human being. He is very special."

She said Darwin considered her its mother and slept and showered with her.

The coat the monkey was wearing in pictures in the IKEA parking lot on Sunday was made to measure, she said.

She is hoping to be able to visit Darwin at the animal sanctuary in Sunderland, Ont, which is located about 95 km north of Toronto. She said her plan was to move to the country to gain more space for Darwin.

She said part of her concern is when she tried to bring Darwin back to its breeder in Montreal, the monkey became very upset and wouldn't leave her side.

Darwin had tremendous separation anxiety, Nakhuda said.

She said she thinks Darwin is missing her.

She understands the reason to send Darwin to the sanctuary, but "I understand Darwin more than they do," Nakhuda said.

The City of Toronto released this photo Monday, Dec, 10, 2012, of Darwin, the monkey found in the North York Ikea parking lot on Sunday.

Ikea monkey owner says she wants Darwin back as videos reveal her life with well-dressed monkey

The owner of a monkey caught wandering outside a Toronto Ikea this weekend says the tiny primate rarely left her side until he was confiscated by authorities â€" and she wants him back.

Yasmin Nakhuda says she initially tried to return the monkey she named Darwin to the breeder who supplied him, but changed her mind after hearing his heartbroken cries.

After that, Nakhuda says Darwin was near her at all times, including while she slept and showered.

“I know he cannot live without me,” said real estate agent Nakhuda.

“And everyone who knows Darwin can vouch for this. He needs his mother like a child needs his mother,” she told CityNews Monday.

A monkey in a coat at Ikea? Let the one-liners and Photoshopping begin!

"Animal Services identified the monkey as a rhesus macaque, an Asian species that is prohibited in Ontario. The monkeys are known for their ability to live in diverse habitats â€" although Canadian winters obviously require a warm coat.

The owner of the primate turned himself in to Animal Services just after 5 p.m. He was charged with owning a prohibited animal, an offence that carries a $200 fine."

Owner of stylish monkey found outside Toronto Ikea says she wants him back

A small monkey wearing a winter coat and a diaper apparently looks for it's owners in an IKEA parking lot as customers take photos in Toronto on Sunday Dec. 9, 2012. The monkey let itself out of its crate in a parked car and went for a walk. The animal's owner contacted police later in the day and was reunited with their pet, police said. TORONTO â€" The owner of a monkey caught wandering outside a Toronto Ikea this weekend says the tiny primate rarely left her side until he was confiscated by authorities â€" and she wants him back.

Yasmin Nakhuda says she initially tried to return the monkey she named Darwin to the breeder who supplied him, but changed her mind after hearing his heartbroken cries.

After that, Nakhuda says Darwin was near her at all times, including while she slept and showered.

The months-old monkey captured worldwide attention after he somehow let himself out of a parked car Sunday and ambled around the store’s parking lot dressed in a fitted shearling coat.

He was eventually captured by animal control officers and moved to a primate sanctuary about 100 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

Nakhuda, who was fined $240 for breaking the city’s prohibited-animal bylaw, says she is considering legal steps to regain custody of the pet she considers part of her family.

Toronto Ikea monkey goes viral

By Lindsay Jolivet | Daily Buzz â€" Tue, Dec 11, 2012

A mischievous macaque that nearly wandered into a Toronto Ikea on Sunday has become a celebrity after the monkey's adventures inspired international news reports and two spoof Twitter accounts.

Shoppers quickly snapped several photos of the monkey wandering around the parking lot of the furniture store.

Twitter user Bronwyn Page tweeted a picture of a tiny monkey wearing a shearling coat. She wrote:

Umm saw a monkey in the #ikea parking lot.
pic.twitter.com/ZFJdIlQl

Before long, news outlets everywhere had covered the story, including the BBC. The broadcaster interviewed Bronwyn Page saying shoppers were shocked when they spotted the creature.

"All the people were trying to call it towards them but it was very scared, it was darting all over the place. They were trying to get it away from cars," Page told the BBC.

But the primate never got the chance to assemble any Ikea furniture and make us humans look incompetent because staff cornered it and called the police, according to the CBC.

Toronto police Sgt. Ed Dzingala said the monkey was in a crate in its owner's car but managed to get out and wander around.

"It's a smart monkey," Dzingala told the CBC.

Animal services suspected the monkey was a pet because of its stylish attire and said a man claimed it on Sunday. Reports say he was charged with owning a banned animal.

Meanwhile, Jupiter will rise around sunset above the eastern horizon and will shine at magnitude -2.8 and will lie among the background stars of the constellation Taurus.

It will move in a retrograde motion (westward with respect to the background stars) toward Aldebaran, the prominent star of the constellation Taurus.

"Jupiter’s distance from Aldebaran decreases about 5 degrees during the month. Jupiter will be pairing spectacularly with the Moon on the 25th and 26th of the month," Servando said.  â€" TJD, GMA News

It will be traversing the background stars of the constellation Sagittarius for the rest of the month, and glow at magnitude +1.2 and will appear as a small blurry orange at 4.5 degrees of an arc in a modest size telescope.

Uranus and Neptune will be found at the zenith an hour after sunset during the month.

They will lie among the background stars of the constellations Pisces and Aquarius.

Uranus will glow at magnitude +5.7 while Neptune will be faint at magnitude +7.8.

Servando said a binocular or a telescope and a star map will be needed to observe the two planets, which will be observable in the evening sky throughout the month.

Planets

Saturn, Venus and Mercury will line up in the east-southeastern sky until the last week of December, as Venus and Mercury continue to slide down the horizon.

"It will be a spectacular view with the naked eye and will be a best time for photography, telescoping and binocular viewing," Servando said.

Mars will remain visible a little over 12 degrees above the west-southwestern horizon, an hour after sunset throughout the month.

Winter solstice

Servando also said the winter solstice will take place December 21 at 7:12 p.m. (Philippine Standard Time).

"This marks the time when the Sun lies at its farthest point south of the equator. It signals the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere," he said.

After this, he said Philippine nights will be longer than daytime.

"Earth has now completed another annual circuit around the Sun," he added.

Aside from the meteor show, he said the equilateral "Winter Triangle" will rise after sunset.

The triangle includes Betelgeuse, the super giant red star and the prominent star of the famous constellation Orion; Sirius, the brightest star in the sky of the constellation Canis Major; and Procyon, the brightest star of the constellation Canis Minor.

Meteor shower a yearend treat for stargazers

December 6, 2012

Weather conditions permitting, stargazers can get their last treat for 2012 with the annual Geminids meteor shower, which peaks on the night of December 13.

PAGASA administrator Nathaniel Servando said as many as 40 meteors per hour can be seen under a "dark and cloudless sky" after midnight of Dec. 13.

"The annual Geminids meteor shower will reach its peak in the night of December 13-14. Under a dark and cloudless sky just after midnight of its peak activity, meteors or 'falling stars' can be seen at an average rate of forty meteors per hour. The shower will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, the Twin," he said.

In 2005, entomologists named three species of North American slime-mold beetles agathidium bushi, agathidium cheneyi and agathidium rumsfeldi in honor of the then-president, vice president and secretary of defense.

Other celebrity names also have been used to name new species. A small Caribbean crustacean has been named after reggae icon Bob Marley, an Australian horsefly has been named in honor of hip-hop star Beyonce, and an endangered species of marsh rabbit has been named after Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner.

"Romneydon'' was never under consideration and "Clintondon'' didn't sound good, said Longrich, who supported Hillary Clinton's failed run against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary.

Obama is not the first politician whose name has been used to help classify organisms. Megalonyxx jeffersonii, an extinct species of plant-eating ground sloth, was named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, an amateur paleontologist who studied the mammal.
