Heart's dad speaks up vs Chiz
By Maridol Rañoa-Bismark | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom â€" 18 hours ago

Heart Evangelista’s father, Rey Ongpauco has spoken up to deny the statements Sen. Chiz Escudero gave in an interview with the  Philippine Daily Inquirer as published in its April 14, 2013 issue.

In a statement sent to Yahoo! Philippines OMG!, Rey said Chiz’s statements offended him  and that the re-electonist senator is using Heart to libel them.

“How can I break up their relationship, when he pounced on Heart as early as July?”

Rey was reacting to Chiz’s comment that Heart’s parents are behaving the way they do since they want him to  break up with the actress.

Heart’s father added that Chiz is “burnishing his image as a young man of promise.”  And while the Ongpauco patriarch agrees Chiz has lots of promise, the former stressed that one of them is his promise to Heart that he will become President in 2016.

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The global economic crisis is hitting Vatican employees in their cassock pockets.

The Vatican said Thursday that Pope Francis, known for his frugal ways, decided Vatican employees won't be getting the bonus that traditionally comes with the election of a new pope.

In the past, the Vatican's 4,500-plus workers â€" both religious and lay â€" would receive an extra little something upon the death of one pope and another upon the election of his successor: In 2005, the total reportedly came to 1,500 euros (nearly $2,000) apiece.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that given tough economic times â€" the Vatican posted a 15 million-euro deficit in 2011 â€" "it didn't seem possible or appropriate to burden the Vatican's budget with a considerable, unforeseen extra expense."

According to "Today," the golden retrievers and their handlers will stay in Boston until at least Sunday. They're based at First Lutheran Church, just a couple of blocks from the explosions. Hetzner told "Today" that the dogs will also travel to local hospitals to visit those who were injured in the blasts.

"I would imagine their effect will be the same as it was in Newtown," Hetzner said. "They bring a calming effect to people and help them process the various emotions that they go through in times like this."

The Huffington Post spoke with Pastor Ingo Dutzmann of Boston's First Lutheran Church. "Animals have an uncanny ability … to discern that you and I have sadness and distress," he said. "Rather than shying away from it, they're attracted to it. They will literally go in a classroom of children and literally find the child most afraid of something."

The therapy dogs undergo months of training to help them remain calm in stressful situations. Each dog has its own Facebook page, so people who forge a bond can keep in touch with their favorite pooch.

The specially trained golden retrievers are provided by Lutheran Church Charities (LCC) of Addison, Illinois.

Tim Hetzner, president of LCC spoke with the "Today" show about the dogs' power to help. "People talk to the dogsâ€"they’re like furry counselors," he said. "It’s a chance to help bring some relief to people that are shaken up because of the bombings."

Despite their bright colors, their ability to “talk”, and their friendly personalities, it turns out that parrots are cousins of fearsome falcons, the most deadly hunters of all living birds. Although the idea that parrots and falcons are related is rather mind-boggling to some, the resemblance is easier to digest when you strip the gaudy plumage from the equation.

Falcons possess a razor-sharp indentation in their bill called the tomial tooth, which is designed to sever the spinal cord of other birds. Hawks and eagles lack this tooth, and are forced to rip their prey to deathâ€"sometimes taking several minutes to kill it. Incredibly, examination of certain parrotsâ€"including the famous lovebirdsâ€"reveal that they too possess a tomial tooth, which lends physical as well as genetic evidence to their link with falcons. -- http://listverse.com/

Everybody mentions “dogs and cats” in the same breath, and in many ways consider them somewhat similarâ€"but it doesn’t often occur to us to say “dogs and seals.” Cats and dogs may share our homes, but the genuine similarities end there; they’re about as far apart as camels and horses.

The dog’s true cousin is not the cat, but its counterpart in the ocean: the pinniped. Seals (and bears, interestingly enough) are members of the suborder caniformia, which is comprised of dog-like carnivores, including dogs themselves. Cats fall into an entirely different suborder. Some researchers have even suggested that sea lions are to dogs what mermaids would be to humans, if they did in fact exist… -- http://listverse.com/

If ricin is ingested, symptoms may be delayed by up to 36 hours but commonly begin within 2â€"4 hours. These include a burning sensation in mouth and throat, abdominal pain, purging and bloody diarrhoea. Within several days there is severe dehydration, a drop in blood pressure and a decrease in urine. Unless treated, death can be expected to occur within 3â€"5 days, however in most cases a full recovery can be made.

Poisoning occurs when animals, including humans, ingest broken seeds or break the seed by chewing: intact seeds may pass through the digestive tract without releasing the toxin. Toxicity varies among animal species: four seeds will kill a rabbit, five a sheep, six an ox or horse, seven a pig, and eleven a dog. Ducks have shown incredible resistance to the seeds: it takes an average of 80 to kill them. The toxin provides the castor oil plant with some degree of natural protection from insect pests such as aphids. In fact, ricin has been investigated for its potential use as an insecticide. The castor oil plant is also the source for undecylenic acid, a natural fungicide.

Commercially available cold-pressed castor oil is not toxic to humans in normal doses, either internal or externally. --Wiki
#26268
The toxicity of raw castor beans due to the presence of ricin is well-known. Although the lethal dose in adults is considered to be four to eight seeds, reports of actual poisoning are relatively rare. According to the 2007 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, this plant is the most poisonous in the world. Despite this, suicides involving ingestion of castor beans are unheard of in countries like India where castor grows abundantly on the roadsides, which may be attributed to the rather painful and unpleasant symptoms of overdosing on ricin, which can include nausea, diarrhea, tachycardia, hypotension and seizures persisting for up to a week. However, it is well known that the poison can be extracted from castor by concentrating it with a fairly complicated process similar to that used for extracting cyanide from almonds. --Wiki

History / Re: The Alphabet Murders
April 18, 2013, 10:58:59 AM
Likewise, an uncle of one of the victims was thought to be a prime suspect; he was never charged, and was subsequently cleared when DNA testing became available. Rochester native Kenneth Bianchi has long been under suspicion, too. After moving to Los Angeles, he and his cousin committed the murders attributed to the “Hillside Strangler”â€"and while Bianchi has never officially been cleared of the Rochester killings, he has also never been charged, and still maintains his innocence.

Additionally, in 2011, seventy-seven-year-old New Yorker Joseph Naso was charged with murdering four women in California in the late 1970s. He probably wouldn’t have been considered in relation to the Rochester case, but for the names of his victims: Roxene Roggash, Pamela Parsons, Tracy Tofoya andâ€"incrediblyâ€"another Carmen Colon. But at the time of writing, Naso’s trial has been repeatedly postponed in the California cases; nor has he been charged with the Rochester Alphabet Murders. -- http://listverse.com/

History / The Alphabet Murders
April 18, 2013, 10:58:42 AM
In the early 1970s, a series of brutal killings shook the area around Rochester, New York. The victims were all young girlsâ€"but that wasn’t all they had in common. Carmen Colon, Wanda Walkowicz, and Michelle Maenza also happened to have alliterative initials, leading the press to initially refer to the incidents as the “Double Initial Killings,” later revising this to the much punchier “Alphabet Murders.”

Many people were questioned in relation to these crimes, and one suspect who killed himself shortly after the final murder was for a long time thought to be the most likely culpritâ€"that is, until he was posthumously cleared in 2007 by DNA testing.

The letters to Wicker and Obama were stopped at a government mail-screening facility after initial tests indicated the presence of the deadly poison ricin.

Because initial tests can be "inconsistent," the envelopes have been sent off for additional tests, an FBI statement said. The FBI does not expect to receive results from the tests until Thursday, federal law enforcement sources told CNN.

The letters read: "To see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance."

General Topic / What is this chemical called RICIN?
April 18, 2013, 09:07:33 AM
Ricin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ricin (pron.: /ˈraɪsɪn/), from the castor oil plant Ricinus communis, is a highly toxic, naturally occurring protein. A dose the size of a few grains of table salt can kill an adult human.

Ricin is poisonous if inhaled, injected, or ingested, acting as a toxin by the inhibition of protein synthesis. It is resistant, but not impervious, to digestion by peptidases. By ingestion, the pathology of ricin is largely restricted to the gastrointestinal tract where it may cause mucosal injuries; with appropriate treatment, most patients will make a full recovery. Because the symptoms are caused by failure to make protein, they emerge only after a variable delay from a few hours to a full day after exposure. An antidote has been developed by the UK military, although it has not yet been tested on humans. An antidote has been developed by the U.S. military which has so far been shown to be safe and effective when lab mice were injected with antibody-rich blood mixed with ricin, and has had some human testing. Symptomatic and supportive treatment are available. Long term organ damage is likely in survivors. Ricin causes severe diarrhea and victims can die of shock. Death typically occurs within 3â€"5 days of the initial exposure. Abrin is a similar toxin, found in the highly ornamental rosary pea.

Deaths from ingesting castor plant seeds are rare, partly because of their indigestible capsule, and because the body can, with difficulty, digest ricin. The pulp from eight beans is considered dangerous to an adult. A solution of saline and glucose has been used to treat ricin overdose. Rauber and Heard have written that close examination of early 20th century case reports indicates that public and professional perceptions of ricin toxicity "do not accurately reflect the capabilities of modern medical management".

The bombings as well as subsequent reports that someone tried to mail the deadly poison ricin to U.S. President Barack Obama - the second report of such a letter in two days - have created a climate of uncertainty in the country. Nerves were jolted further by an inaccurate report on cable news network CNN that a bombing suspect had been arrested.

Shortly after CNN retracted its report of an arrest in the case, security officials at Boston's federal courthouse ordered staff, media and attorneys to evacuate due to a security scare and move at least 100 yards (91.4 meters) away, according to a Reuters reporter on the scene.

Bomb-sniffing dogs, fire engines and heavily armed and helmeted police arrived at the courthouse, which was reopened to employees an hour later.

In Washington, authorities were investigating a letter addressed to the president after the contents preliminarily tested positive for the ricin. Authorities had intercepted a letter sent to Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi on Tuesday that also preliminarily tested positive for ricin.

The FBI said there was no indication of a connection to the Boston bomb attacks, but they reminded Americans of anthrax mail attacks the country in the wake of the September 11 attacks 12 years ago.

BOSTON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Investigators have spotted a Boston Marathon bombing suspect from security video taken before two blasts ripped through central Boston on Monday, a U.S. law enforcement source said on Wednesday, in what is potentially the biggest break in the case yet.

No arrests had been made, and the suspect in the video had not been identified by name, two U.S. government officials said. Police may make an appeal to the public for more information at a news conference scheduled for later on Wednesday, a U.S. government source said.

The explosions at the Boston Marathon finish line killed three people and injured 176 others in the worst attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001.

The elder Tan, 78, is the second wealthiest man in the country, based on the latest roster drawn up by Forbes Magazine. He ranked 248th globally this year’s list with an estimated net worth of $5 billion and also improved his global ranking from 314th previously.  But apart from his investments in the Philippines, Tan has vast investments in mainland China, Papua New Guinea and Guam, among other offshore markets.

The deal was structured as a top-up offering, whereby LTG’s principal shareholder Tangent Holdings lent secondary shares to facilitate a quick equity deal.

This was also the first equity deal that capitalized on the first Philippine sovereign investment grade rating issued by Fitch Ratings before the Lenten break.

“The transaction was already oversubscribed even before the roadshow.  There were 11 world-class long-term cornerstone investors that committed to subscribe to one billion shares before the official bookbuild â€" the first time such a process was ever done in the Philippines,” Baja said. “The deal was seven times oversubscribed excluding the cornerstone tranche.”

“We are extremely pleased with the strong level of interest that the LT Group received from the global investor community, and we welcome them as our shareholders.  This is a testament to the positive long-term outlook on the Philippine economy and we remain fully committed to support the continuous growth of our country and LTG,” said LTG president Michael Tan, deemed as the heir-apparent to the Lucio Tan empire.

Tan and some key officers closed the deal after an international roadshow that covered the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, London, New York and Boston.

“This offering validates LTG’s position as a leading conglomerate in the Philippines. We look forward to the next stage of LTG’s evolution as a leading conglomerate in the Philippines,” LTG chair Lucio Tan said.

About one-third of the proceeds will be used to expand its banking business, another third to the liquor and property businesses and the remainder for some debt repayment.

Investors based in Asia accounted for 42 percent of the deal. Europe accounted for 23 percent and those from the US gobbled up 36 percent.  Long-term global institutional investors constituted a significantly high 82 percent of the transaction, while hedge funds and private banks constituted 18 percent, said Lauro Baja, managing director at UBS Philippines which acted as the sole bookrunner, sole global coordinator and lead manager for this transaction.

“Lucio Tan’s debut into the equity capital markets has broken many records in deal-making in the Philippines. The phenomenal success is a great tribute to him and his management team.  He has now crystallized the value of the business empire he built in the country and has set the stage for future expansion,” Baja said in a text message from New York.

The orderbook built at the end of a global roadshow amounted to over $3.5 billion with the participation of over 130 institutional investors, said Baja. Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan acted as co-lead managers.

At the deal price of P20.50 per share, Lacson said this translated to 33 times LTG’s earnings in 2012 while most conglomerates were trading at only close to 18 times earnings.  Assuming a 15 percent growth, this would translate to a price-to-earnings multiple of 29 times prospective 2013 earnings.

But due to strong demand from the international market, LTG was able to sell 1.84 billion common shares worth $920-million (P37.72 billion) and the option to upsize by 15 percent was exercised.

The group’s selling proposition for LTG is that it’s a large conglomerate owned by one of the Philippines’ most prominent businessmen with two-thirds of its business focused on consumer-based segments and most of which were quite dominant in their business lines. This deal was warmly received by those seeking an exposure to the consumer-oriented Philippine economy.

Technically, LTG’s exercise was a re-IPO or a follow-on offering after the group infused key businesses in what used to be a purely liquor company Tanduay Holdings. Added to its portfolio were the group’s interest in Philippine National Bank (the surviving entity in the merger with Allied Bank); Fortune Tobacco Corp., Asia Brewery Inc. and Eton Properties Inc.

For those looking at a 12-month horizon, the pricing was expensive, said Jose Mari Lacson, head of research at Campos Lanuza & Co. “It’s hard to justify as cheap because of the impact of sin tax on earnings of key businesses.  The group must earn at least like Ayala Corp. at P12 billion in 2013 to make sense.  Also, better valuation will require more information on restructured group which has been fully disclosed yet.  That’s why annualizing may not be completely accurate basis,” Lacson said.

“But if you’re an institutional investor with horizon over 12 months, it would make sense,” Lacson said.
