Bat Females, Too, Have Menstrual Cycle! - At least in the case of the rousette bats
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Fruit bat male waiting for its mate\'s menstruation to be over

Scientists couldn’t find out if vampire bats can feed on their own blood, but what they did discover is that bats can have a menstrual cycle. At least in the case of a species of fruit bat.

The Chinese research team, led by Professor Shuyi Zhang of East China Normal University, and Hongmei Wang of the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that their findings could lead to bats being investigated by researchers who study the human menstrual problems and other reproductive disorders.

The team made the discovery in the Leschenault's rousette bat (Rousettus leschenaulti) which inhabit caves, wells and mines in South and Southeastern Asia, from Pakistan to Indochina and Java. The rousette bats are more peculiar amongst the other fruit bats (Megachiroptera "large bats"), as they possess echolocation through ultrasounds, like the rest of the bats included in Microchiroptera ("small bats"), detect less colors than other fruit bats and some times indulge in animal meals (like snails).

To be sure of their findings, the team brought on board Professor Paul Racey of the University of Aberdeen, a world leading researcher of bats and their reproductive biology. "Although it occurs in primates, menstruation is found in few of the world's 4,000 species of mammals which is why this discovery is so remarkable. The finding is significant because it extends our knowledge of the reproductive biology of what is a large group of mammals. It also raises the possibility that this type of fruit bat could be studied by those who are trying to increase our understanding of human menstrual dysfunction and other reproductive disorders.", he said.

Fruit bats live in tropical and subtropical climates, with more or less constant temperatures; this is less likely in temperate climate bats, with a more seasonal reproduction pattern.

And as the vampires are Microchiroptera, we can barely wait for the answer…

Top 10 Weirdest Chinese Foods - Penis or saliva nest?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Snake wine with a cobra

Did you know that Westerners are some kind of barbarians in the eyes of a Chinese? Because how the heck can you eat fermented milk emulsion (read cheese), which stinks worse than a skunk? Of course, for them, it’s very tasty to eat rats, dogs, cats. A Chinese folk speech says more or less that they can eat everything that has four legs, except tables; everything that flies, except for airplanes; and everything that is found on water, except boats.

1. In a Chinese market you will see from bats and snakes to cranes and herons (it is said that their meat prolongs life...how? That's a real scientific puzzle...), while in the western world most water birds are rejected because of the strong mud stench.

2. You may have heard that the tiger is menaced by the high demand of tiger penis bone on the Chinese black market. For the same people, the tiger penis bone is the symbol of the tiger’s power, including the sexual one. Of course, it’s like chewing chicken or pork bones, but the poachers are menacing the wild tigers because of such stupid beliefs.

3. But the Chinese imagination does not stop here, and for them, each penis in the world is like a panacea. Penises are thought to increase yang (virility) and women are not advised to eat testicles, due to the testosterone content.

There are specialized restaurants in penis delicacies. Some penises are served raw, like sushi, others can be cooked. You can serve dog clammy testicles and penis, which is gray and shiny. Dog penis is low in cholesterol and is considered to be quite efficient in boosting the male sex drive, but also for treating all sorts of conditions.

Giant salami-shaped donkey penises are considered good for the skin...The double penis of the snakes is considered to increase potency. Sliced and pickled ox penis, which has bland and with a rubbery texture, is considered a general energizer.

You can also eat in such a restaurant yak, seal, horse, goat and deer penises. Some westerners compare the tastes of some penises with overcooked squid. The black market delivers also the highly desired tiger penis, at a price of $5,700 (£3,000), but it must be ordered months in advance. It seems that it tastes the same as other penises, but many people in China just like to order tiger to show off, and prove they have quite a lot of money.

4. Aborted reindeer fetus is also considered good for the skin.

5. Sharks have pervaded the Earth for over 450 million years, before
any plant or animal got out of the water and colonized the terrestrial surface. Now they face extinction due to a human caprice: Chinese fin shark soup.

Once, shark fin was a gift offered just to emperors and shark fin soup is traditionally served at Chinese wedding banquets and on different occasions when the host wants to leave a great impression on the guests with expensive dishes. With the growing number of wealthy Chinese businessmen, the number of this kind of ignorant hosts is increasing as well. Some also think it is healthy, but the fin is nothing more than tasteless cartilage, sought more for its texture, than for its flavor.

"Hammerhead, Great White and Basking sharks were some of the species at risk. Shark fin is becoming cheaper and eaten by a growing number of people in China â€" perhaps by around 100 million people a year.", signals a WildAid report.

A 2006 research showed that, annually, 73 million sharks are killed for their fins and the demand for shark fin soup grows with 5 % per year.

6. A Chinese delicacy is the bird's nest soup. It’s made from the nest of a few species of swift, called cave swifts, renowned for building saliva nests. Such nests are among the most expensive animal products consumed by humans. When dissolved in water, the nests get a gelatinous texture. Yammy! Bird saliva!

In Hong Kong a bowl of this soup costs between US$ 30 to 100.

7. Perhaps the best known Chinese cuisine ingredient is the dog meat, as this seems to be the most repulsive for the westerners. Cats, too, are not for cuddling, but eating.

The problem is that carnivore meat has an extremely powerful flavor that makes it repellent for the westerners. The Chinese have no problem with that, and they will eat practically any known wild carnivore encountered in China.

This comes with a feed back: researchers have found that the SARS epidemics were caused by the consume of civet cats, and the virus was transmitted from them to humans. Civet cats are a type of carnivore not related with true cats but with mongooses, and from whose perianal glands the famous civet perfume is extracted.

Balut

8. Balut (boiled duck embryos) is better known from the Philippines, but it has a Chinese origin, where it is called maodan ("hairy egg"). Maodan is served skewered.

Fertilized duck eggs are left, on average, 17 days and then boiled. The nearly-developed embryo is consumed in the shell. Maodan is thought to be an aphrodisiac and it is in fact a high-protein, hearty snack. "The flavor is savory and delicious; the texture satisfying" said Western travelers who surpassed the idea of eating something with s**t and feathers...

Why is the maodan made from duck eggs and not from hen eggs? "Chicken maodan" has a bad taste, to say the least ... Question of tastes...

9. Neither the superstitions nor the good work made by bats in combating insects stop the Chinese from consuming bats, sometimes skinned alive. This has come with a feedback: bats too are among the causes of the SARS epidemic.

10. Well, in China Dracula could have indulged freely in ... snake blood, which is believed by Chinese to raise the libido...

You can drink it at fast-foods, and they deliver it in only seconds. But the show is really a horror movie. The snake curls and whips its body in agony as the handler slits open its chest and rips out a heart that continues working for several minutes. Then its body is stretched vertically and clamped at each end as droplets of red blood fall into a plastic jug half-filled with water.

Ox penises in Chinese market

I know that the Chinese cheese is made of soy, not milk, and it is called tofu. But I still prefer to call wine what comes from grapes, and not the infamous snake wine, an alcoholic beverage found not only in China, but in many Southeast Asia countries.

The snakes, preferably venomous ones, are preserved to have the snake poison dissolved in the liquor. Still, the venoms, which are proteins, are inactivated by ethanol.

There are two varieties. A large venomous snake can be put into a glass jar of rice wine, often with many smaller snakes, turtles, insects, or birds, and left to ferment for months. Snake blood wine is produced by mixing the snake blood and bile with rice wine or grain alcohol. The snake meat, liver, and skin can be cooked to accompany the drink. This wine is believed to cure all kinds of conditions, from farsightedness to hair loss, and helps increase the sexual performance. Of course, that's nonsense.

Make Holy Communion Hosts - The bread of Jesus
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Are you a good Christian? Then you should know how the hosts for the Holly Communion are made.

The wafers are made with unleavened paste, without yeast, just like Jesus Christ ate during the Last Dinner.

The recipe
is very simple: water and a mixture of different wheat flours. One of them, rich in gluten, is what gives the host its corky texture. After achieving the paste, it is extended and warmed between two baking sheets at 170°C, operation that eases the evaporation of the liquid residuals. This way, thin plates of dry bread are obtained. The plates are piled up and moistened.

Finally, the hosts are cut with a special knife and are left to air out during about 6 days, before being packed and delivered. Inside the Roman Catholic Church, hosts are usually made by the nuns. The same church states that when the words of consecration are vowed the bread is turned into the Body of Christ through transubstantiation. "Host" comes from the Latin "hostia" ("victim" or "sacrificial animal").

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 321 recommends "that the eucharistic bread ... be made in such a way that the priest at Mass with a congregation is able in practice to break it into parts for distribution to at least some of the faithful. ... The action of the fraction or breaking of bread, which gave its name to the Eucharist in apostolic times, will bring out more clearly the force and importance of the sign of unity of all in the one bread, and of the sign of charity by the fact that the one bread is distributed among the brothers and sisters."

The Orthodox Churches and Eastern Rite Catholic Churches use leavened bread, except for the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Armenian Catholic Church, the Syro-Malabar Church and Maronite Church, which were greatly influenced by the Catholic Church.

Some churches prohibit the use of spiced, flavored or sweetened hosts, but universally, the hosts are made of wheat.

Breakfast at Jollibee's . Please read until the end.

This is a good story and is true, please read it all the way through until the end! (After the story, there are some very interesting facts!):

I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college degree.

The last class I had to take was Sociology.

The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with.

Her last project of the term was called "Smile."

The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally.

Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to Jollibee's one crisp March morning.

It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son.

We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did.

I did not move an inch... an overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved.

As I turned around I smelled a horrible "dirty body" smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men.

As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was "smiling".

His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for acceptance.

He said, "Good day" as he counted the few coins he had been clutching.

The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation.

I held my tears as I stood there with them.

The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted.

He said, "Coffee is all Miss" because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm).

Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes.

That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action.

I smiled and asked the young lady behind the cou nter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray.

I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand.

He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Thank you."

I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, "I did not do this for you. God is here working through me to give you hope."

I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, "That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope."

We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to give.

We are not church goers, but we are believers.

That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love.

I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand.

I turned in "my project" and the instructor read it.

Then she looked up at me and said, "Can I share this?"

I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class.

She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed.

In my own way I had touched the people at Jollibee's, my husband, son, instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student.

I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE.

Much love and compassion is sent to each and every person who may read this and learn how to LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.

If you think this story has touched you in any way, please send this to everyone you know.

There is an Angel sent to watch over you.

In order for her to work, you must pass this on to the people you want watched over.

An Angel wrote:
Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.

To handle yourself, use your head.

To handle others, use your heart.

God Gives every bird it's food, but He does not throw it into its nest.

PLEASE PLEASE  Keep this going

Loneliness Shortens Your Life - Because of stress
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The bachelor status could make you proud, but will make your life shorter. A team of psychologists at University of Chicago tracked down social loneliness and its physical effects, connected with aging, right down to the cell level. The scientists found that even if loneliness could be mild and unnoticeable in early life, its effects are accumulative.

The team investigated a group of college students and one of people that were 50 to 68 years old.

Stress was the factor they focused on. The more you live, the more stressful experiences you accumulate: new jobs, marriage and divorce, parenting, financial worries, diseases.

But the researchers found that even when the lonely individuals reported the same number of stressful events in their life like the ‘not lonely’ ones, they presented more sources of chronic stress and recalled more childhood negative events. They also perceived life experiences differently: when faced with similar challenges, the lonely people felt more helpless, threatened and unable to actively look for help.

Urine analysis revealed higher levels of epinephrine, a stress hormone, in the bodies of the lonely individuals. This means that lonely people experience a perpetual state of arousal. In the case of blood pressure, this physiological effects were more likely to manifest with aging.

As stress hormones decrease the immune capacity, inflammation and infection in loneliness could act more aggressively in the wear and tear effect of aging.

Moreover, loneliness linked to stress affected severely the sleep quality. The lonely individuals had a sleep impaired by many "micro awakenings", so that even when they sleep as much as the non-single subjects, the lonely ones reported more daytime dysfunction. Sleep loses quality with age anyway, thus the effects of loneliness will be even severer with age.

The researchers warn that loneliness is different from solitude. Some people can find comfort in being alone, but for many, social isolation induces an intense stress.

No Fats for Children is Dangerous - Children need fats in their diet
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

If you think you can help your little child become a fashion model, that's very risky. A new research showed that parents who eliminate all types of fats from their children's alimentation could cause serious health issues for their kids.

It is well known fact that some amount of 'good' fats, like olive and sunflower oils, is crucial for proper growth and development. But the increasing children obesity level has pushed many families to adopt low-fat diets for their children. The number of overweight children has doubled in ten years, now 25 % of the children aged 11-15 being classified as obese - so fat that their health is threatened.

The new research reveals that children burn more fat than adults do, related to each calorie spent, so that they store fat with more difficulty. This means the parents do not need to go to extremes.

The team led by Dr John Kostyak at the Pennsylvania State University assessed the burning rate of body fat in ten children aged six to ten, and in ten adults. All the subjects were middle weighed relatively to their age and sex. They were given the same common American diet for three days before the tests, even if the adults received larger meals.

The subjects' oxygen consume and carbon dioxide residue, as also heat production, were measured in a calorimeter room and a hood system, for nine hours on three separate days at a low physical activity level (like watching movies or reading).

The researchers also counted the nitrogen levels in the volunteers' urine to see how much fat they burned. The total fat burned level in a day was the same for both children and adults. This meant that children burned much more fat linked to the energy they used, in grams of burned fat per calorie of energy consume, about 50 % more. Women and girls burned more fat than men and boys of similar age did.

Other researches had shown that dietary fats are essential for normal growth, as they contain fat-soluble vitamins (like A and D), vital for the development of eyesight, bones and other organs. "Sufficient fat must be included in the diet for children to support normal growth and development.", said Kostyak.

"Children need the fatty acids and omega 3 found in fat, and fat soluble vitamins A,D and E for growth, development and eyesight. There is a risk parents could think that all fat is bad for their children - some years ago we had a phenomenon known as Muesli Belt syndrome where parents went to extremes with food that didn't contain all the nutrients they need." said Jacqui Lowdon, of the British Dietetic Association.

"35 % of calories from a healthy diet should come from fat, ideally polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats such as olive and sunflower oils. These set up healthy eating patterns for life", she added.

The Abortion Pill Does Not Affect Future Pregnancies - The same effect as in the case of surgical abortions
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

This drug induced a new sexual revolution. Mifepristone meant total sexual freedom as it was the solution after an "accidental" night of free sex. But some women expressed concerns, as the secondary effects of the chemical have not been investigated.

A new research shows that women using abortion pills rather than the more common surgical method do not present a higher risk of tubal pregnancy or miscarriage in later pregnancies. The investigation was made on about 12,000 Danish women and is the first monitoring mifespristone's effects on subsequent pregnancies.

Surgical abortions are most commonly done by vacuuming an embryo or fetus out, employing a syringe or electric pump. The abortion pill method means that the pregnant woman will take one tablet of mifespristone followed by four misoprostol pills 1-2 days later. The mifepristone detaches the embryo from the uterus, and the misoprostol induces uterine movements that eliminate the embryo.

Medical abortions are preferred by women because they can be effectuated in private at home, the method is not as invasive as a surgery is, and most doctors can prescribe the pills. In the U.S., mifepristone was approved in 2000, and in the EU just in 2007. Now, up to 10 % of the about 1.3 million annual abortions in the US are done using mifepristone.

Previous studies have proven that surgical abortions don’t increase the risk of eventual problems in later pregnancies, but the impact of mifepristone was not known. "Generally, surgical abortions completely remove an embryo or fetus and surrounding uterine tissue, but abortions done with pills may leave bits of placenta or other embryonic material. Some doctors have wondered whether that might interfere with subsequent pregnancies," said Dr. Matthew Reeves, a reproductive medicine expert at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, not involved in this research.

The research team employed a national abortion registry to detect all women in Denmark who aborted between 1999 and 2004, and gathered data on later pregnancies from national patient and birth registries. Why Denmark? "Denmark is the only country with an abortion registry," said co-author Dr. Jun "Jim" Zhang of the National Institutes of Health.

The team focused on tubal pregnancies, in which a fertilized egg fixes outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes, a dangerous situation as the embryo cannot be fed and the mother's life is put in danger.

The researchers discovered that tubal pregnancies took place at the same rate, about 2.5 %, in both the medical and surgical groups. The percentages of miscarriage, early deliveries and low-birth-weight babies were found to be comparable. The study could not take into account factors like the mother’s history of smoking, previous tubal pregnancies or others, not marked in the registers, but researchers think this did not change the final results.

Be very careful when you get caught with dust...as folowing pictures shows the efects of bad dust to a person. While he was talking with his friends on the street, he felt an eye irritation, thinking that it was just regular dust,he started to rub his eye, in an effort to remove the dust.... then his eyes got really red, and he went and bought some eyedrops from a pharmacy....few days passed and his eyes were stil red and seems a little swolen. Again he dismissed it as the constant rubbing and that it wil go away. The days go by, the sweling of his eye got worse, redder and bigger....til he decided to go and see a doctor for a checkup. The doctor immediately wanted an operation, being afraid of a tumor growth or cyst. At the operation, what was thought to bea growth or cyst, actualy turned out to believe worm ..... That was thought initialy to be just mere dust actualy it was an insect'segg. If you do get caught dust, and the pain persists, pls. go,see a

Methamphetamine HCl (Shabu) Induces Parkinson's Disease - Long after quitting
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Meth mouth

When taking meth, a burst of dopamine makes you euphoric, extremely dynamic, full of energy and you do not even need to eat. But after that, blood pressure increases and there is a risk of stroke and severe heart issues, besides hallucinations.

Methamphetamine (also known as meth, crank, crystal and speed), a powerfully addictive drug, has been used by more than
12 million people in the US. Celebrities like Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas have had a long publicized battle with the drug.

It is a psychostimulant and sympathomimetic chemical, prescribed for severe cases of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (narcolepsy) as Desoxyn. It can be taken orally, injected, snorted or smoked. Most users are 18 to 34 years old. It is known that in just one year, the drug users can lose all their teeth (the "meth mouth").

Users become obsessed, doing repetitive tasks like cleaning, hand-washing, or assembling and disassembling objects. Withdrawal induces excessive sleeping, eating and depression-like symptoms, besides anxiety and drug-craving.

But the drug makes more than ‘stealing’ your teeth and personality: a new research shows that young adults consuming methamphetamine are more likely to experience age-related brain diseases/disorders long after they interrupt the consume. Thus, even if the drug's current use may not produce immediate results, the issues will install as the person grows old.

The methamphetamine administered for a long time on the mice appeared to partially reduce the glial derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), a protein that protects and resinthesizes dopamine, which is a crucial brain neurotransmitter connected to motor control, and whose lack is a main factor causing Parkinson's disease.

"These studies speak directly to the possibility of long-term public health consequences resulting from the current epidemic of methamphetamine abuse among young adults. Methamphetamine intoxication in any young adult may have deleterious consequences later in life, although they may not be apparent until many decades after the exposure," said Jacqueline McGinty, researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Top 6 The Most Severe Human Rights Violations Around the World - Is the 21st century one of freedom?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Congolese slave children soldiers

Article 18. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

On 27th of February 2002, in the Indian city of Godhra, Gujarat, a Muslim crowd attacked a train filled with Hindu activists, firing two cars, and killing 27 persons. The event triggered a violent spiral of religious revenge and four days later, 2,000 Muslims were killed, their houses, mosques and trades destroyed and hundreds of women raped and mutilated before the members of their families.

Later investigations revealed that the attacks had been planned and done with the mutual approval and collaboration of the local authorities.

Religious intolerance has been signaled in Afghanistan, Algeria, Brazil, Burundi, Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Liberia, Nigeria, many countries of the Middle East, Congo, Russia, Uganda, China (see the Muslims of Xinjiang) and others.

Article 5. No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Torture is a common practice in Brazil and the violence in prisons is common and with tragic consequences. At the end of May 2002, 20 convicted and a guardian died during a revolt in the prison of maximum security of Manaus. The imprisoned protested against the tortures and the subsequent killing of an inmate and against the overpopulation and the inhuman life conditions in the prison.

In January 2002, 27 prisoners were assassinated during a revolt in the prison of Oso Blanco (the Amazonian state of Rondonia). The victims were stabbed, shot, hung or tossed from the roof by inmates belonging to rival bands.

The more recent episodes of Abu Graib are too fresh in our minds...

These infringements have also been signaled in Angola, Argentina, US, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Peru, Congo, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Russia, Turkey, Tunisia, Vietnam and other countries.

Article 4. No one shall be held in slavery or servitude;
slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

For 18 years, LRA (Lord Resistance Army) guerrilla from northern Uganda has been kidnapping boys to train them as soldiers and girls to turn them in sexual slaves of the commanders. In 2002, the number of children found in the power of LRA was of 20,000.

Slavery has been also signaled in Albania, Saudi Arabia, Belarus, Myanmar, Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, Georgia, Kirghistan, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and other countries.

Article 13.(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

After the fire cease between the government of Angola and UNITA in 2001, the number of people experiencing hunger reached 2 millions. 4.5 million people were refugees. The harassment and extortion amongst refugees is common, just like rapes.

This violation is also signaled in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Colombia, ex-Yugoslavia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Congo, Uganda ...The Darfour case of Sudan is much too famous.

Article 19. Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

15 journalists were killed and 68 experienced violent attacks in turbid circumstances for having denounced the corruption and abuses of the Russian Army in Chechnya. The special correspondent of "Novaia Gazeta" in the Caucasian republic was "invited" in 2002 to leave the country.

Infringement of the freedom of speech and media, and killed/attacked journalists have been also signaled in Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Kenya, Sudan, Panama, Macedonia, Turkey, Ukraine, Iran, Pakistan, Tunisia, Vietnam, China ...

Article 3. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

The Vietnamese authorities adopted an increasingly severe attitude towards the so-called ‘groups of high risk behavior for contracting HIV’, like drug addicted and prostitutes, qualified as "social demons". At least 75,000 drug dependent persons were detained in 71 overpopulated rehab camps in 2002.

Similar situations have been signaled in Belarus, Brazil, China, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, India, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Pakistan, Congo, Russia, Ukraine, Zambia...

Vaginal Atrophy and Vaginal Dryness Means 54% of the Menopausal Women Have Less Sex - A ban imposed by the menopause
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

That's nature. While the single condition for a 90-year-old is an erection to procreate, women of 35 can be already sterile, due to natural biological clock or surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. This is menopause, when the menstrual period stops and the ovaries permanently stop producing ovules. Menopause is diagnosed when a woman has not had her period for over a year.

Of course, this changes a woman's sex life. 54 % of the American women aged over 35 have less sex during menopause than before, as found by a Sex & Menopause online survey made between June 20 and July 2, 2007 on 1,054 women aged over 35, who were perimenopausal, menopausal or post-menopausal. The research pool was representative of the American women aged over 35 following the next variables: education level, region, income, age, sex and race/ethnicity.

76% of the subjects, who were committed on long-term relationships, stated that sex was an important part of the relationship and 45 % were satisfied with how much sex they had. "Women today, specifically the boomer generation currently entering or experiencing menopause, are much more open about their needs and seek information more than previous generations, so it’s surprising to me that so many women would settle for a less than satisfying sex life as a result of menopausal symptoms," said Karen Giblin, founder of the Red Hot Mamas Menopause Management Educational Programs.

But menopause symptoms vary a lot; some women
can suffer vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats or vaginal atrophy (vaginal shrinkage) which can provoke vaginal dryness and sexual dysfunction and/or physically uncomfortable sexual experiences, as sex results painful.

469 of the subjects reported symptoms of vaginal atrophy, vaginal dryness, increased urinary tract infections and pain during active sex.

Still, 47% of women did not know much about vaginal atrophy while most of them knew about non-sexual symptoms: 95 % about hot flashes and 91 % about night sweats.

Vaginal atrophy meant a drop in frequency of sex: 75 % of these women had less sex since the beginning of menopause and 68 % had painful vaginal sex. 88% of these women were concerned about the issue and 47% of them avoided sex or stopped having sex altogether due to the physical discomfort.

51% of the menopause women experienced vaginal dryness and 79 % of these patients had an impaired sex life due to this. "If left untreated, over time, women will experience changes such as vaginal atrophy and dryness that can make physical intimacy uncomfortable, even painful. But they do not need to give up on sex altogether," said Dr. Murray A. Freedman, Augusta GYN, P.C., Augusta, GA.

"Sadly, most women are unaware that these conditions are treatable. Effective therapies, which range from over-the-counter lubricants to FDA approved hormone therapy, are readily available. Equally important is the effect of continued sexual activity. While it may seem like reverse logic, having intercourse can help ease the severity of vaginal atrophy."

36% of these women reported that the lower frequency of sex relations affected their relation with the partner. 60% of the subjects discussed openly with their partners about the symptoms of menopause and 67% reported that their partners were very supportive with them when it came to the impact of menopause on their sex lives. 46% of the subjects who reported less frequent sex relations have discussed the issue with their partner.

84% of the subjects looked for some information about menopause, its symptoms and treatment from healthcare professionals, media and the internet. "Given that less than half of those polled consider themselves very knowledgeable on any of the common symptoms of menopause (including night sweats, hot flashes, etc.) and only 35 % consider themselves very knowledgeable or knowledgeable about hormone therapy as a treatment option more education is clearly necessary," said Giblin.

The Oriental Food Secret of Slimness and Healthy Long Life - The Chinese diet and the Okinawa case
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The western diets are very tricky: besides the health problems they produce (like heart, liver or kidney issues, or gout), they have also the yo-yo effect: subjects regain quickly the lost weight when they stop the diet, and even gain more. Less stress, more physical exercise and a healthy life style could help.

The Chinese tradition says that to be healthy and slim is very easy. It's enough for example to drink a lot of warm water and eat cooked meals. The weight loss should be of no more than one kg (2.2 pounds) per week.

As sports, a daily walk of 30 minutes is recommended, but also light jogging and swimming.

There must be three meals daily. Breakfast must consist only in a herbal infusion and fruit. The main meal is the lunch. The dinner, rapid and light, must not contain dairy products and animal proteins. Smothered vegetables and rice should be the main components of the menu.

As for the meant, only fish and chicken are allowed, without cattle, lamb or pork. And one very important detail: no fatty foods.

The beverages must never be cold; instead, just warmed water, alone or with honey, lemon, or herbal infusion (ginger, mint or cinnamon). The
best is to drink 2-3 liters.

In the Oriental diet, fruit is recommended, as vitamin C is useful for eliminating fat. 1-2 lemons, one orange or a pomelo would do good. All acid fruits, with a little watery content, like strawberries, help lose weight. Avoid fruits like avocado (which is fatty), mango or banana (both rich in sugars). Never eat salads for dinner, as the leaves are more difficult to digest.

Eat cereals maximum twice per week. Wheat is not proper for slimming, and the same can be said about pastas, biscuits, and crackers made of integral flour. Slices of rye bread are better. Never mix muesli with sweet fruits, milk or yogurt. The best is to eat quark.

Yogurt is not recommended for dinner, as it is difficult to digest and does not help lose weight. It is recommended just the low fat yogurt and with hot spices, which favor the digestion. The best spices are: cumin, coriander, and fennel.

Sausages, cheese and eggs should be avoided. Just occasionally, dry or wet goat cheese can be consumed as snack during the midday, but never during the night.

Experts are also puzzled by the case of the Okinawa island (in southern Japan) people. If Japanese people live longer than any other nation, the Okinawa inhabitants reach ages that take by surprise even the other Japanese: an average of 86 for women and 78 for men.

There are 457 persons on Okinawa aged 100 or over, an average of 35 for each 100,000 inhabitants. It is the highest in the world. But what's more important, these people are active and healthy at very advanced ages.

The statistics reveal a significantly lower risk of heart attack and stroke, cancer, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s… And some Okinawans that have reached their 90’s claim that they still have an active sex life (without Viagra!).

After decades of research, doctors and anthropologists reached the conclusion that there are two main factors behind the longevity on this island: alimentation and a healthy lifestyle that experts believe that can be imitated.

The aliments eaten by the Okinawans can be found everywhere, even if there may be also something about the soil of the island. The traditional diet of Okinawa consists in portions made of a bowl of cooked food and a fruit. Okinawans eat daily seven portions of vegetables and fruits, seven of cereals and two of soy products. They take various portions of fish weekly and very sporadically meat and dairy products. Overall, their diet is low in calories and contains a lot of vegetables.

A Laptop Made of Cornstarch - And biodegradable too
By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor - Softpedia

A Laptop Made of Cornstarch

The green fever that touched the entire computer hardware industry is extending to laptop cases as well as the Japanese hardware manufacturing Fujitsu designed a laptop case for its LifeBook family of portable computers that is as green as it gets.

From household items that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable to biodegradable laptops casings and chassis there is one small step and Fujitsu decided to cover all its bases with the casing made of a type of plastic that is produced from cornstarch rather than petroleum. The manufacturing process needed to make this kind of plastic is more costly than the traditional oil to plastic process, but the end product is as green as we will ever see: put it away in a landfill and it will just disintegrate in a few months. In contrast, plastic made from oil will take some decades to go away.

Another good point for the corn to plastic manufacturing process is that it will cut some of the carbon emissions and according to some with as much as 15 percent. Laptop casings are not the first Fujitsu product to be made of biodegradable plastics as the company already used the very same type of material for cell phones and point-of-sale terminals. For now the green plastic is only available in Japan but it is hoped that it will soon arrive in Europe and United States. Its manufacturing cost may decline as more companies like Cereplast and Archer Daniels Midland become interested in the project and expand production.

It is not unusual for Japan to be the first country to adopt a new and more environmentally friendly material as their internal environmental program is quite aggressive and the energy efficiency programs are in full swing after the oil shock and pollution problems of the ‘70s. As a direct result of these policies and programs, Japan is one of the prime markets for solar power cells and related materials.

Men's Dream Come True: The Condom That Makes Your Penis Bigger! - By the end of 2007
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

See? Strawberry and banana flavored or spiky condoms are kids' stuff. A new condom goes to the point: not even longer, but larger erections, too!

CSD500, the Condom Safety Device, will have an erectogenic chemical to help men keep a full erection during intercourse. The gel, to be licensed under the trademark name
of Zanifil, will dilate the arteries, increasing blood flow to the penis, offering the wearer an improved stiffness, tumescence and longer erection. The condom incorporates a pharmacological dose within the teat, that will reach the penis.

After discussions with EU regulatory authorities, the product was classified within the EU as a Class III medical device incorporating an ancillary medicinal chemical, which means you could buy it throughout Europe just like a conventional condom.

The British firm Futura Medical, that has designed the new condom, signed a global distribution agreement with the world's largest condom manufacturer and distributor, SSL International (producer of the well known Durex) for the lifetime of the patents.

A recent trial made of CSD500, equally sustained by Futura and SSL International has come with positive results, showing a significantly firmer and longer-lasting erections, and increased penis size, through the employment of the CSD500 condom compared with a standard model. The results have come from a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study.

The research pool was made of 108 healthy couples, in which the men had at a cetain moment experienced a partial or complete loss of erection whilst employing standard condoms. CSD500 was also found to have a high degree of safety and tolerability.

CSD500 could be approved later in 2007, and will be launched by SSL as a Durex-branded product (we can't wait to see the name!...). Futura has a patent protection on 30 markets, including the main European countries as well as the US and Canada, and patent applications are on-going in 8 other countries.

Facts and Trivia / Dolls
August 18, 2007, 04:55:32 AM

A sex doll (also love doll) is a type of sex toy in the size and shape of a sexual partner for aid in masturbation.Typically of human form (nearly always female) but models of animals exist (sheeps, dogs, horses ...) for humans or animals consumption. The sex doll may consist of an entire body with face, or just a pelvic part, with the orifices (vagina, anus, mouth) for copulation. The openings are sometimes vibrating and may be removable or interchangeable. The use of sex dolls are not restricted to humans, but also for domestic animals for various reasons.

In humans

History

There has long been a sailor's term, the "dame de voyage", or "dama de viaje" in French and Spanish respectively, indicating a female doll made of sewn cloth and used by sailors aboard ship.

Amateurs have been making their own sex dolls from fabric for some time now

A 1982 attempt to import a consignment of sex dolls into Britain had the unintended consequence of lifting all import prohibitions on "obscene or indecent" items arriving from elsewhere in Europe. Having had the dolls seized by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise officers, Conegate Ltd. took the case all the way to the European Court of Justice, and won in 1987.[1] Britain was forced to lift its stringent import prohibitions dating from 1876, because to do otherwise would have constituted an arbitrary barrier to free trade under the terms of the Treaty of Rome.

Commercial forms

Cheaper sex dolls are inflatable, using air. These lower price-range (less than $50) dolls are usually rather ugly, made of welded vinyl, and bear only a passing resemblance to women or men, but they have an artificial vagina or penis and their users are willing to overlook their shortcomings. They often burst at the seams after a few uses, although they are commonly given as gag gifts and therefore some may not use them at all. Cheap vinyl dolls may be a health risk, if they contain large amounts of dangerous vinyl chloride or phthalates.

At the middle market price-range ($100 to $200), dolls are made of heavy latex without welded seams, have plastic mannequin-style heads and styled wigs, plastic or glass eyes, and properly moulded hands and feet. Some contain water-filled body areas such as the breasts or buttocks. The manufacturing process causes most latex dolls to be delivered with a fine coating of zinc oxide covering the skin, which is usually removed by the consumer by placing the doll under the shower. Otherwise, latex is an inert and non-toxic natural material; although a tiny percentage of users may discover a latex allergy. All latex dolls of any quality currently on the market are manufactured in either France or Hungary.

More expensive sex dolls ($600 to $7,000 or more) are made from silicone. They can be very lifelike, with face and body modelled on real women or men, with realistic skin material (similar to that used for movie special effects), with realistic (or real) hair. These dolls usually have an articulate PVC or metal skeleton with flexible joints that allows them to be positioned in a variety of positions for display and for sexual acts. Silicone sex dolls are obviously heavier than inflatable ones (which consist of mostly air), but are about half the weight of a real human of comparable size. They are made in the USA by Abyss Creations (the RealDoll), 1st-PC, Mimicon and others; and in Japan by Paper Moon, 4Woods, Orient Industries (the CandyGirl) and others.

Silicone dolls are quite popular in Japan, where they are known as "Dutch Wives" ('datch waifu'). Their name originates from the term, possibly English, for the thick rattan or bamboo bolster, used to aid sleep in humid countries by keeping one's limbs lifted above sweaty sheets. There is even a rental service for 'datch waifu' in Tokyo, Doru no Mori, that specialises in sex dolls.[2] In March 2007 the Japanese Daily Mainichi newspaper reported that the specialist love-doll magazine Aidroid has a print-run of 10,000 copies per issue.[3]

The middle market and high-end market emerged in the USA around 1995. The market has grown for two main reasons. Firstly, the last twenty years have seen huge improvements over earlier types of sex dolls, and customers come to realize this through using the web. Secondly, the method of retail purchase has also improved - customers now select online instead of having to take "pot luck" in a sex shop, and a possible purchase can be discussed first in online forums with existing owners. Extras to customize a doll to one's personal taste (wigs, clothes, perfumes, etc) can also be purchased online.

New materials & technologies

The RealDoll has evolved since 1995, and the latest models are significant improvements over those of just a few years ago. The success of the RealDoll has led others to enter the market for high-end dolls, often using new proprietary materials.

A company called CybOrgasMatrix uses a new material - a very elastic gel with a strong shape memory, which, they claim, is superior to silicone in quality and also cheaper. Their sex doll product includes additional features, such as pelvic thruster motor and audio capability (using wireless headphones).

The ongoing advances in robotics suggest that sex robots may be eventually manufactured and sold.[4] A stepping stone to the implementation of full robotics would be to embed some of the rapidly developing cybersex technologies in dolls, to enable telepresence sexual activity. Spin offs from new technologies will undoubtedly be introduced into sex dolls - such as miniaturization, voice response, 'smart materials' and 'intelligent textiles'. Science-fiction and post-feminist theorists have already imagined a variety of artificial women, or gynoids. See Stepford Wives.

In June 2006, Henrik Christensen of the European Robotics Research Network told the UK's Sunday Times that "people are going to be having sex with robots within five years."[5]

Novelty forms

In Japan inflatable love pillows ('dakimakura') with a life-size picture of a porn star or anime character and optionally a hole for lovemaking are also popular.

Some inflatable sex dolls are made in the form of animals, most notably sheep[6]. These dolls are more of a joke gift or party novelty.

There are also some companies (like Dekunoboo in Japan or Teddy Babes/Eighth Wonder in the USA) that make cloth sex dolls, based on the same technology as plush toys for children. Amateurs have been making their own sex dolls from fabric for some time now, there are even mailing lists for discussing techniques and experiences with MLDs (material love dolls).

Documentary

The 2007 Channel Five documentary film Guys and Dolls describes four men and their relationships with sex dolls.[3]

In culture

    * Sex dolls appear occasionally in comedy shows and movies. Notably, the Ally McBeal series integrated one into the plot, regularly showing Ally dancing and sleeping with an inflatable male sex doll. Nip/Tuck also had a few episodes involving a sex doll modeled incredibly accurately on a character in the series.

    * A Sex doll features as a central plot device in Tom Sharpe's satirical crime novel Wilt.

    * Sex dolls have been the subject of numerous songs, most notably by Roxy Music, Frank Zappa, Saul Zonana and The Police.

    * The American sitcom Married... with Children features a running joke that involves Bud Bundy and his sex doll.

    * Howard Stern of radio fame mentioned that a modern doll was "the best sex I've ever had." Stern also purchased a RealDoll, which he posed in his studio as a gag prop, and often referred to during interviews with guests. This might be the same doll mentioned above.

    * The Swedish web comic Little Gamers features Marcus, a character who has never had sex with a real girl, only with inflatable dolls. These inflatable dolls are a running joke in the comic.

    * Novels centering on sex dolls include Richard Calder's Dead Girls. Cinema-release movies include Monique (France, Valerie Guignabodet, 2002), Love Object (US, Robert Parigi, 2003), Dead Doll (Adam Sherman, 2004), Life Size (Tamaño Natural, 1973), and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (Japan, 2004).

    * Australian composer and multimedia artist David Worrall created the multimedia work "The Twins" (1999) in which a pair of semi-naked sex-dolls play "naughty-word" Scrabble on their day off. Embedded in their facial orifices are small loudspeakers, through which they communicate, both with each other and to their exhibition audience. They speak a phonetic language composed by the artist.[7]

    * British composer and audio/visual artist Troy Banarzi created the "performance art" work "Euphonika" (2006) which explores peoples' relationships with dolls. Live automated music is combined with animation and interviews with people who have "living" relationships with sex dolls as well as other dolls and statues.[8]

    * Photographers such as Helmut Newton, Elena Dorfman and Anoush Abrar have chosen sex dolls and sexualized mannikins as subjects in their art photography.

    * Two feature-length documentaries about sex dolls and their owners are set to premiere at U.S. film festivals in 2006.

    * The Japanese Anime movie Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence by Mamoru Oshii taking place in 2032 where Public Security Section 9 investigates a cyborg corporation making androids in the form of young women and used as sex dolls.

    * In the 1st Jackass: The Movie, Johnny Knoxville has two in a car when he does a demolition derby

    * In the Family Guy episode The Perfect Castaway, Quagmire packs a lot of sex dolls later used as a raft after Peter's fishing boat is destroyed by a tidal wave.

    * The cult film Love Object is a 2003 film written and directed by Robert Parig, concerns a socially awkward technical writer who develops an obsessive relationship with Nikki, a rubber sex doll he orders.

    * The Australian comedian Tim Minchin composed the song Inflatable You as a tribute to sex dolls. The song in question was performed during his appearance at the 2007 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

    * The opening credits of the First Leisure Suit Larry Game feature Larry Laffer chasing after a flying Love Doll.

    * A chapter of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Haunted centers around a sex doll.

Sex dolls in animals

Horse breeders use a female horse doll in order to fool the stallion in giving his sperm, so that the breeders can sell it for breeding purposes.

Sex dolls for dogs, in the form of dogs, are sold, so that the dog can relieve itself on the sex doll, and not any where else.[9]

Top 12 Most Frequent Issues That Kill Men - The strong sex?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Death comes a little bit differently if you're a man or a woman. Besides hormonal and anatomical causes, it’s the careless behavior of men what makes them live 7 years less than women. In the West, 70 % of men aged 30-50 are overweight and 40 % are too stressed.

Race also counts: in the US, Blacks are more likely to die in an altercation or of HIV, Latinos in accidents, Native Americans of cirrhosis and other liver issues, while Whites are more prone to Alzheimer’s disease, while the Mongoloids to various forms of cancer.

These are the top factors causing men’s death:

1. Heart issues are the main cause of death both in men (28%) and women. But men are more predisposed to hearth failure than women are due to testosterone. They develop these diseases earlier, and 25 % of the victims are aged 35 to 65.

Hearth health is affected by high cholesterol, smoking, alcohol, overweight, hypertension, diabetes but also heredity.

Only minor consume of red wine is recommended. Saturated fats (sausages, pork, diary products) must be replaced by vegetables, greens, fish and some red meat. Light exercising like walking rapidly for one hour daily strengthens the hearth. If allowed, take your daily aspirin.

2. Cancer kills 24% of the men. The most frequent is lung cancer, in 90 % of the cases caused by smoking, but it also can be hereditary or determined by the contact with toxic compounds at work. Combined with alcohol, smoking causes larynx cancer. In one year after quitting smoking, the risk of cancer decreases significantly. The second most deadly cancer in men is colon cancer.

90 % of liver cancers are due to drinking and infection with hepatitis virus C. 10 % are determined by infection with hepatitis virus B or hereditary metabolic conditions. Intensive pills intake, risky sexual behavior and hereditary factors also count.

There is also the autoimmune chronic hepatitis and non ethylic steatohepatitis, which produce lesions similar to the alcohol-produced ones in abstinent persons, due to the mixture of obesity, diabetes and fat alterations in the plasm, linked to the hyper-caloric diets and sedentary life.

Moderate alcohol consume and the vaccine against hepatitis virus B always help.

Prostate cancer is not linked to diseases, lifestyles, or alimentation, but to age and heredity. 80% of the eighty-year-old men have prostate cancer, even if they die of other condition. A small percentage of this cancer is deadly, but it can severely impair one’s life. If there are cases in the family, prostate cancer checks must be made after 50, when the tumor can be detected in initial stages and cured completely.

Penis cancer, almost inexistent, is determined by lack of hygiene and sexual promiscuity. Bladder cancer is triggered by smoking or contact with anilines (colorants) and petroleum.

By avoiding overexposure to sunlight, skin cancer can be avoided.

3. Accidents kill 5,9% of the men. The most frequent are the car crashes that kill twice more men than women, as men tend not to use the safety belts, are more prone to speeding and many times drive drunk, or fall asleep at the wheel.

4. Strokes count for 5.1 % of the male deaths. They are linked to heredity, hypertension, diabetes, fat metabolism diseases and chronic headaches. Regular checks of the tension, controlled body weight, low stress, sport control and low alcohol consume keep them away.

5. Lung obstructive chronic diseases (counting with 5,1%), like emphysema or chronic bronquitis are mainly caused by smoking, which increases the risk 12 times.

6. 2,9% of men die of diabetes. 30% of the patients do not even know they have it. They find it out after severe complications install: impotence, neurological issues, kidney and vision impairment.

7. Flu and pneumonia finish 2,4% of the men, especially vulnerable being those with lung obstructive chronic diseases, asthma or smokers, but also suffering of diabetes, heart or AIDS.

8. Most suicidal people are men. Men are exposed to depression due to medical factors (depressive disorders, alcoholism, or chronic painful diseases) and social causes (old age, loneliness, lack of family support, stressing events). The highest factor that leads to suicide in men is linked to how men experience personal difficulties.

Being generally more rigid, inflexible, introverted and impulsive
than a woman, when a man faces a severe difficulty, he can choose the evasive way of acting and commit suicide. Men can’t stand loneliness or matrimonial separation the way a women do and usually they don’t speak about their problems, so they don’t free themselves from the pain. That's why about 7 % of the men may develop depression, an important risk factor for committing suicide.

Moreover, men live with more stress and anguish from their work, generating more health conditions and anxiety states. Women display depression through sadness and a feeling of uselessness, while men through tiresome, irritability and sleep impairment. Depression can be masked by alcohol and drug consume.

Men should communicate more and have a life project that can be adjusted to reality. If it is shared, it's better. And they must assume more coherently the ‘response’ to other proposals which the others want to develop.

9. Kidney issues wipe out 1,7% of the men. They can be diabetes linked complications or due to high blood pressure, or drug abuse, like aspirin and ibuprofen, which are toxic for the kidney. People with kidney issues should drink more liquids.

10. Obesity. Women usually accumulate fat on the hips, while men on the abdomen, which is more dangerous, as this is associated with metabolic and respiratory complications: diabetes, apnea, hypertension, vascular conditions, elevated levels of the blood triglycerides (saturated fats) and low levels of the artery-protecting HDL cholesterol and others.

Obesity killed 154,884 US citizens between 2000-2005.

Men must adopt healthy diets, exercise and reject miraculous diets. Family should be supportive on this.

Men with over 108 cm (3.5 ft) around the waist should pay a visit to a doctor to determine the caloric expense and know the disposition of their body fat.

11. Sleep apnea. The high incidence of sleep apnea amongst men is due to the fat accumulation around their necks when they gain weight. As muscular tone decreases while sleeping, the respiratory ways get narrower due to the fat pressure and cannot let the air pass. There are also hormonal factors. Sleep apnea affects the quality of the sleep, turning the person sleepy and irritable during the day, with high risk for traffic accidents.

There are also cardiovascular problems. If during sleep, there are more respiratory pauses of over 10 seconds, at least 10 times per hour, apnea is present. Obesity must be fought against through diet and exercising. In severe cases, special masks that introduce the air to the respiratory paths must be used.

12. Alzheimer’s or senile dementia affects about 4,5 million Americans, men and women. Women experience it more often as they live longer.

Meet the "Werewolf" Boy - From India
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Prithviraj Patil

No, this 11-year-old boy has neither fangs nor claws; he has hair growing all over his face and body, a rare developmental anomaly which can be removed just through laser treatment or plastic surgery.

The boy,
Prithviraj Patil, the son of a well-to-do farmer in Sangalwadi near Sangli, is otherwise a healthy normal child. The facial hair, which is up to three-inches (8 cm) long may look awful, but it does not induce any itch or rash on the skin and it is not accompanied by any odor or skin disorder. "Hairy nevus, where a person has patches of excess hair growth or hirsutism, is not uncommon. But hair persisting all over the body is very rare", said plastic surgeon Vinay Saoji.

"Though I have not come across such cases or its documentation anywhere, I suppose options like epilation could be tried out to rid the boy of the embarrassment", Saoji told IANS.

Such traits, reminding us of real or supposed evolutionary lost characteristics are called atavisms. They usually appear because genes for previously existing phenotypical traits are not discarded from the genome, but often preserved and just inhibited by our DNA. Even if these genes are not expressed, a mutation can reactivate them.

Atavisms that have been found in humans are for example babies born with a vestigial tail, named "coccygeal process", "coccygeal projection", and "caudal appendage", but other atavic traits in humans can be the presence of large, ape-like canines, the development of claws instead of nail or the presence of more than one pair of mammary glands.

Atavisms have been also signaled in animals: whales and dolphins with small hind fins (showing clearly that they evolved from four limbed land mammals), or extra-toes in horses, showing that their ancestors had 5 fingers and toes like the rest of the mammals.

Birds' Einsteins, More Intelligent than Chimps! - Analogical reasoning found in the New Caledonian crow
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

A crow named Betty, from a previous experiment, trying to retrieve the bucket from the well, using a stick with a hook on the end of it

Having a bird's brain cannot be bad at all. The New Caledonian crow is already known for its ability to use and craft tools, but a new research shows that the birds' cognitive skills could surpass the monkeys'.

The bird, endemic to New Caledonia (northeast of Australia) employs sticks in the wild to fish out big juicy beetle larvae from dead wood. The new
study reveals that the birds can also use common sense, not just trial and error, to see how to use available tools for getting a snack.

"It was surprising to find that these 'bird-brained' creatures performed at the same levels as the best performances by great apes on such a difficult problem," said co-author Russell Gray of the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

The scientists put a piece of meat in a hole too deep for the crows to reach it, so that the birds needed to fish it out with a long stick, like they do in nature in the case of a larva. But the long stick was also located out of reach, leaving the birds with just a small stick.

"The creative thing the crows did was to use the short stick to get the long tool out of the box, so that they could then use the long stick to get the meat," said co-author Alex Taylor.

The birds' tooling skills appeared comparable with great apes' capacities.

"Analogical reasoning requires the ability to view a new situation as being essentially the same as a previous one. Evidence suggests that, from the earliest human stone tools, analogical reasoning has been at the core of human innovation. This hallmark of human intelligence may also be at work in both the great apes and New Caledonian crows and may explain why, out of all the crow species in the world, only these crows routinely make and use tools." said Gray.

Like in all species, individuals' abilities varied and 3 of 7 crows solved the short-stick/snack issue on the first try without previous attempts and all individuals eventually got the trick within 25 tries. That's much better than in the case of capuchin monkeys, which in a similar experiment in 2003 required 50 tries for 80 % of the monkeys to succeed.

In the last test, the two sticks were reversed.

"Although the crows probed the box containing the short stick at first, they eventually figured things out and took the long stick directly to the meat-filled hole â€" a clear demonstration of their analogical reasoning power," wrote the researchers.

Breakthrough: How to Store and Erase Long-Term Memories - A continously ongoing process
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Memories are still as mysterious as the universe itself. We still have not located a particular area in the brain that exclusively deals with memories and we cannot say if they are stored in a stable physical state or a changing one. Common theories say that long-term memories are stored in the form of proteins inside the neurons, while short-term memories are more unstable
ones.

Now, a team led by Prof. Yadin Dudai, Head of the Weizmann Institute's Neurobiology Department, is challenging this concept. They have found that the process of storing long-term memories is much more dynamic, involving molecular processes running constantly. If the processes are jammed even for short periods, long term memories can be lost.
This could lead to future treatments for memory problems.

Dudai's team trained rats to avoid certain tastes. After that they injected a drug blocking a specific protein into the taste cortex, a brain nucleus connected with taste memory. Based on their previous researches, the scientists supposed that the protein, called PKMzeta, works as a tiny memory "machine" that keeps memory functioning.

PKMzeta, found in the synapses, the functional contacts between two neurons, induces changes in some facets of the synaptic contacts. But to maintain this (and memory and learning processes), it must be continuously active. The researchers supposed that shutting off PKMzeta should reverse the synaptic change.

Indeed, no matter the taste the rats had learned to avoid, they forgot about their aversion after just one shot of the drug. This lasted for a month after the memories were formed (in terms of life span, this means years in humans). This is the first time when memories could be erased (and even unpleasant ones) long after their formation.

"This drug is a molecular version of jamming the operation of the machine. When the machine stops, the memories stop as well." said Dudai.

It appears that long-term memory is not a one-time inscription on the neuronal network, but an ongoing process which requires continuous maintenance, an important detail for boosting and stabilizing memory.

Could Humans and Chimps Hybridize? - In the past, they did it!
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

1 %. This makes the DNA difference between you and a chimp. But I guess a chimp female is not a very hot image for a male human (actually... who knows!?). As for male chimps... at least are too short...

Today, there are 5 species of apes: two species of orangutans, one of gorillas, and two of chimps (common and lesser or bonobo), but chimps have the closest DNA to the human one: 99 %. Beyond ethical reasons, could a viable human-chimp result in case of a crossed
mating?

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, chimps have 24. Thus, even if the resulting hybrid would be viable, it would be sterile.

This is exactly the case of mules and hinnies, a hybrid between a horse mare and a donkey stallion or a donkey mare and a horse stallion. Donkeys have 62 chromosomes, whereas horses have 64. These hybrids have 63 chromosomes which cannot evenly divide, to form healthy sex cells. Still, isolated cases of fertile mules have been signaled.

Thus, a human-chimp hybrid would be sterile, as it would have 47 chromosomes. But the story does not stop here. Today's humans do not breed with chimps, but apparently, our ancestors have done it, based on archaeological and DNA data.

DNA analysis shows that we completely split off from the chimps 4-5 million years ago. But Sahelanthropus, a 7 million years fossil, believed to be one of our ancestors, is much more human-like than 4-3 million years old human species.

Our early ancestors appeared to have interbred with chimpanzees after the two species drew apart millions of years ago, explaining the amazingly recent divergence hominids â€" chimps, of just 4 million years, as showed by the mithocondrial DNA, used to calculate the molecular clock (the speed at which genes mutate, thus the evolution's rhythm).

Archaeological data indeed sustains the hypothesis that humans and chimpanzees separated first 6.5 to 7.4 million years ago. Moreover, "speciation" of chimp and hominid â€" the process by which they emerged as separate species â€" took an extraordinary long time: around four million years in all.

Sahelanthropus is older than the date of definitive separation between humans and chimps, yet it is more human than it should be. "The fact that it has human-like features suggest that human-chimp speciation may have occurred over a long period with episodes of hybridisation (inter-breeding) between the emerging species. That such evolutionary events have not been seen more often in animal species may simply be due to the fact that we have not been looking for them," said David Reich from the Broad Institute of Harvard.

Night Learning is Better! - As the brain is more active
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It is clear that a night owl will enjoy nightlife more than a morning lark. And if they are wise, they've got all the reasons, as a team led by the postgraduate student Martin Sale from the School of Molecular and Biomedical Science at the University of Adelaide has recently discovered: daytime affects your brain’s capacity to learn and the human brain stores more
information in the evening.

This discovery, pointing to the most efficient moment of the day for learning, could be applied for rehabilitation therapy, maximizing the degree and speed of recovery.

"Our research has several future applications. If the brains of stroke patients can be artificially stimulated to improve learning, they may be able to recover better and faster." said Sale.

The team employed a magnetic coil over the head to turn on nerve activity in the brain and connected it to a hand electrical stimulus. The researchers found that the brain’s capacity to control hand movements was heavily connected with the time of the day. They found that the most significant changes occurred when the experiments took place in the evening, as compared with mornings.

"Such time-of-day variations in function are not unusual. Organisms are adapted to the continual change in light and dark during a 24 hour period to avoid predators and to reproduce faster. For example, the petals of many flowers only open during the day, while some organisms only reproduce at night. In humans, these rhythms are governed by a variety of hormones that control many bodily functions." explained Sale.

Still, being a night owl does not bring so many advantages, as this circadian rhythm has been connected to an increased exposure to insomnia, even when the subjects have the opportunity to compensate for their lack of night sleep by prolonging their time in bed to gain more sleep time.

Insomnia represents a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep, waking up too early, poor quality sleep and it affects about 30 % of adults. This sleep impairment affects a person's physical and emotional health, mental and work abilities.

Many researches have linked insomnia to severe health problems like a higher risk of depression, obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Testosterone Patches to Increase Women's Sex Drive - At least in HSDD
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It's a fact that men are so horny because of testosterone. Now, women could benefit from this, too.

A new study shows that women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), characterized by persistent or recurrent deficiency and/or lack of sexual fantasies/thoughts/desire or absence of sexual receptivity) show significant
improvement in sexual drive and sexual life after experiencing low level testosterone treatment.

Two randomized double-blind, placebo controlled approaches in surgically postmenopausal (due to uterus and ovaries removal, linked to cancers) women with HSDD showed that transdermal testosterone patch treatment improved significantly the rate of satisfying sexual contacts and libido, while hampering sexual distress.

132 subjects from the 2 trials stated that 6-month after the treatment period, they have experienced a high increase in frequency of satisfying sexual activity and sexual drive: an average rise in sexual activity of 4.4 times per 4 weeks. Placebo women reported just a 0.5 increase in activity per 4 weeks.

"More women on testosterone experienced a meaningful benefit (52 % vs. 31 %) and, in fact, the odds of experiencing a meaningful benefit on testosterone were 2.4 times greater than that of placebo," said lead author Sheryl Kingsberg.

As the subjects could assess by themselves if the treatment was beneficial or not, those perceiving the treatment as beneficial kept on following it. "These findings not only confirm the clinical effectiveness of transdermal testosterone, but provide benchmarks for the degree of improvement in sexual function that all future therapies for this disorder should try to attain," said co-author Jan Shifren.

"This is an especially relevant clinical study in the field of sexual medicine. These important data reinforce the positive value that treatment with the low dose testosterone patch can bring to the quality-of-life of surgically post-menopausal women with HSDD.", said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

How to Have Real Sex with Virtual, In-Game Characters - The revolutionary Novint Falcon controller used for some rather unholy purposes
By: Alex Vochin, Technology Editor - Softpedia

The crazy contraption

Even if the sex toy industry is quite alive and well and rolls out hundreds, if not thousands of new designs every year, it would seem that absolutely nothing can beat the dirty minds of technology fanatics around the world, who'd stop at nothing in order to get as close and personal as possible to the female characters from their favorite games.
And the latest device that fell pray to the users' lust is none other than one of the most revolutionary game controllers launched up until now, namely the Novint Falcon.

Thus, according to an article posted on Slashdong (which appears to be a twisted, sex-oriented version of the very popular Slashdot website, at least in terms of names), it would seem that a very imaginative user has combined the Falcon with one of the most popular sex toys around, namely a fleshlight (a device that has the external appearance of a normal flashlight but sports a soft, genitalia-shaped material inside).

As you might remember from our article on this subject, the Novint Falcon is considered to be the world's first controller to offer a full 3D feeling and force feedback capabilities, therefore allowing the user to enjoy a very special and immersive gaming experience, which includes a full range of realistic touch sensations (as for example weight, shape, texture, dimension, dynamics and force effects), as well as high-fidelity force feedback.

However, all these features could be used for other, "dirtier" purposes as well. Thus, since there are quite a lot of erotic-themed PC games available on the market, any user could build the setup you can see in the enclosed pictures and then adjust the settings of the Novint Falcon in order to deliver a very pleasurable experience. Moreover, even if the impromptu sex toy depicted here is aimed at male-users only, female users could also adapt a dildo to this crazy contraption.

Connectivity detail

My take on this? One Novint Falcon: around 240 US dollars. One Fleshlight: 60 US dollars. One's genital organ being torn off by a freaky accident: priceless.

How Much Coffee Makes You Drop Dead? - Anyway, pure caffeine is much more effective
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

There are many studies investigating the effects of coffee, and its active ingredient, the alkaloid called caffeine, on the organism. Coffee has been found to enhance memory, reduce post-gym muscle pains, fight skin cancer, blepharospasm and gout, at the same time boosting sex drive.

Caffeine blocks adenosine, a chemical that makes you naturally drowsy, increasing concentration and reaction speed, and constricting the brain's blood vessels. The heart beats rate increases, muscles tighten, the blood pressure
booms, blood vessels near the surface constrict and more blood flows to the muscles. Caffeine also increases dopamine, the "happy feeling" hormone, in your brain and it is a mild diuretic.

But if you're going to practice bodybuilding, the heart beats can increase up to a dangerously high level, while triggering extremities shivering and nausea. Moreover, the long term effects can be really tricky. Once the temporary stimulation stops, the brain cells begin to need caffeine for stimulation and a sudden neural sluggishness installs. The unnatural heart racing is unhealthy, and can trigger heart problems. Sleep is damaged and the alkaloid needs 12 hours to be completely eliminated from your body.

Due to the diuretic effects, the caffeine â€" while speeding the urination cycle â€" "steals" calcium which is lost through urine. Long term, heavy caffeine use leads to a rapid development of osteoporosis.

Coffee has been also linked to higher blood levels of cholesterol.

OK, let's stop the bulls**t now. Just as any other ‘drug’, in small amounts, caffeine (and coffee) acts as a stimulant. But the coffee plant synthesizes the alkaloid with the purpose of killing…its natural consumers. The grazer eating too much coffee will die. We, too, may die. The uncontrolled heart beats are the prelude of a heart attack.

Over 400 mg of caffeine (found in 4-5 cups of brewed coffee) can provoke caffeine intoxication. Some even snort caffeine powder, which results in a more rapid and intense reaction. The symptoms are just like in the case of any other drug: restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, face flushing, increased urination, gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitching, a rambling flow of thought and speech, irritability, irregular heart beat, and psychomotor agitation.

Of course, a deadly dose of caffeine has not been tested on people, but in rats the average lethal dose (LD50) of caffeine is 192 mg/kg: 50 % of the rats died after ingesting this amount. In humans, however, the value would be linked to weight and each one's sensitivity, to about 150 to 200 mg/kg of body mass.

So, if you drink 80 to 100 cups of coffee very quickly, you might succeed in…dying. Of course, this also depends on the coffee variety, and cup size, as this determines how much caffeine enters your body. Actually, cases of death caused by coffee drinking have not been reported yet (at least from rapid drinking; the chronic effects are another story) but caffeine pills (as little as 2 g) are much more dangerous for the human organism, and have been proven lethal.
