Fireworks-related injuries down to 40 at JRMMC
01/01/2008 | 01:43 AM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us The number of fireworks-related injuries have gone down compared to last year, at least at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, which treated only 40 patients since New Year's eve until around 1:36 a.m. of Tuesday, the first day of 2008, according to a GMA Flash Report.

None of the victims were themselves the ones lighting fireworks but were merely bystanders, according to GMA reporter Steve Dailisan.

The hospital has treated a total of 70 fireworks injuries since December 21. - GMANews.TV

Thailand's pro-Thaksin party says they can form govt

Agence France-Presse

BANGKOK - Allies of ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Monday they had enough seats to form a government after three minor parties joined their coalition.

"The four parties have agreed to cooperate in forming the government and we are confident we can absolutely form the government," said Samak Sundaravej, leader of the Thaksin-linked People Power Party (PPP).

"It will be 254 government seats," he added.

PPP won 233 of the 480 seats in the lower house in elections on December 23, just short of the absolute majority needed to govern alone.

The Democrat Party came second in the poll -- the first since a coup in 2006 -- with 165 seats, but refused to join a PPP-led government, forcing Thaksin's allies to woo the five small parties who shared the remaining seats.

PPP's coalition partners Rum Jai Thai Chart Pattana, Matchima Party and Pracharaj party won 21 seats between them in the election, giving the grouping led by the PPP 254 seats.

PPP will likely see its share of seats shrink to 230, however, after the Election Commission on Sunday said it was moving to disqualify three of the party's winning candidates over allegations of vote buying.

By-elections will be held within 30 days, after a government legal body approves the commission's decision.

Samak said that even if the three candidates' victories were overturned, it would not effect their coalition.

"Even if we are down to 251 seats, we still can set up the government," he told reporters.

The leader of the third biggest party -- Chart Thai which scooped 37 seats -- hinted Monday that it too was thinking of joining forces with PPP.

Banharn Silpa-archa said that PPP had accepted Chart Thai's conditions, meaning that a coalition would be "no problem".

"PPP said they can do it, they can accept it, if they can follow those five conditions the country will be at peace and there will be reconciliation, so I answer them that there will be no problem," he told reporters.

He said Chart Thai would reveal its official position on Wednesday, while PPP officials have said they will formally announce the full details of their coalition government on Friday.

PPP is widely seen as the proxy party of Thaksin, who was ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006.

He has been living in exile since then, mostly in England where he bought Manchester City football club, but has said he wants to return to Thailand by April.

PHILIPPINES' CLAIM

TO SABAH
A majority of Filipinos everywhere are wondering what is this Sabah claim
is all about. The Philippine history books, Malaysian's probably too,
have not mentioned about the Philippines' stake on the northern part
of the island of Borneo. On the other hand, the Malaysians maybe
furious that there are a lot of attention now being focused to that
part of the Malaysian federation to which they believe was theirs
since the British handed the territory in 1963.

What we are trying here is to bring an insight to this dispute based on
our researched of the various facts (or allegations) regarding this subject.
As Filipino Americans, our main concern in bringing about this article is to
tell that part of the history of the Philippines.

WHERE IS SABAH?

Sabah,is the northern part of Borneo. It is bordered by Sarawak on its
southwestern side, and Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) to the south.
Sabah has a coastline of approximately 800 to 900 miles and with the
South China Sea in the west and north, the Sulu Sea in the northeast
and the Celebes Sea in the east. Sabah's total land area is 76,115 sq km
(29,388 sq miles). Sabah's population is about 2.5 million. It is 1,961 km
from Hong Kong, 1,143 km from Manila, 1,495 km from Singapore, 1,678 km
from Kuala Lumpur and 2,291 km from Taipei - note that it is nearer to
Manila than Malaysia's capital of Kuala Lumpur.

North Borneo is much undeveloped and very rich in natural resources.
One of the wealthiest oil producing countries is located in same island
of Borneo, the tiny Sultanate of Brunei.

Learn more about Sabah through the links below.

THE LEASE STARTED IT ALL

The Sultanate of Sulu was granted the territory as a prize for helping
the Sultan of Brunei against his enemies and from then on that part of
Borneo is recognized as part of the Sultan of Sulu's sovereignty. In 1878,
Baron Von Overbeck, an Austrian partner representing The British North Borneo
Co. and his partner British Alfred Dent, leased the territory known as "Sabah"
- roughly translated as "the land beneath the winds". In return the company
will provide arms to the Sultan to resist the spaniards and 5,000 Malaysian
ringgits annual rental based on the Mexican dollars value at that time or
its equivalent in gold. This lease have been continued until the independence
and formation of the Malaysian federation in 1963 together with Singapore,
Sarawak and Malaysia. Up to these days, the Malaysians have been continuing
the rental payment of 5,300 Malaysian ringgits - a 300 ringgits increased from
original rent.

In 1962 during the Pres. Diosdado Macapagal's administration (the father
of the present president, Glorio Arroyo), the Philippines formally claimed
Sabah based on the Sultanate of Sulu heirs' claim on the territory. The
Philippines broke diplomatic relations with Malaysia after the federation
have included "Sabah". The sultan's heirs have given the Philippine government
the authority to pursue the claim legally in international courts. However, the
succeeding administrations have either have ignored or set aside the claim for
peaceful co-existent and trade relation with the Malaysians.

One significant incident involving then President Marcos have briefly brought
into limelight the Sabah claim once more. In 1972, the Marcos government have
been training secretly a group of Muslim Filipinos in Corregidor, an island
off Manila Bay, for possible intrusion in Sabah to pave the way to an armed
secession of Sabah from Malaysia. But upon knowing of the plans, the recruits
have mutinied and were eliminated except for one that swam the bay and was
rescued. The newspapers have called this incident, the "Jabidah Massacre"
named after the operation that was given by the military. The survivor divulged
the plan and the claim was put in back burner once more. It was believe that
because of the incident, the Malaysians have been aiding the Muslim separatists
against the Philippine government. Some people says this distracted the attention
to the claim on Sabah as the government was embroiled in containing the conflict.

LEGAL CLAIM BASIS

The claim was based on several historical facts and court judgement.

The lease agreement is definitely a proof otherwise there will be no basis for any
agreement if such ownership was not established at all. The contract was between Sri
Paduka Maulana Al Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alam - representing the sultanate as owner
and sovereign of Sabah on one hand, and that of Gustavus Baron de Overbeck and Alfred
Dent, representing the British East India Co. (then became the North Borneo Co.), on
the other as lessee of Sabah, was executed on June 22, 1878. Though the British turned
over the possession and government of Sabah to the federation, the Malaysians have not
remissed in paying the annual rental.

The 1939 court judgement on the claim had handed ownership of North Borneo to the heirs
of the Sultanate prior to the formation of Malaysian federation in 1963. The judgment
of Chief Justice C.F.C. Makaskie of the High Court of North Borneo in the civil suit
filed by the late Dayang Dayang Hadji Piandao and eight other heirs of the Sultan of
Sulu, including the famous Putlih (Princess) Tarhata Kiram, upheld the validity of the
claim of the heirs.

Being a British colony did they favored the Malaysians than returning the leased
territory to its rightful owners as per 1939 court judgement? Did the British influenced
the outcome  of their sponsored 1962 plebiscite to which won by those who wanted to
join the Malaysian federation than be an independent state. One also has to speculate
as to why did the British respected a similar treaty with China by returning Hong Kong
instead of conducting a plebiscite just like the one conducted in Sabah in 1962, is
the Philippines a weak nation that can be ignored? These are some questions that need
to be addressed by those who have the mandate to pursue the Philippine claim.

The Malaysian argument before the International Court (The Hague) is in the link below.
This is based on the islands disputed between Indonesia and Malaysia wherein the
Philippines is trying to intervene.

SO WHY THE REVIVAL OF THE CLAIM NOW?

In the last few months the Malaysian authorities have been deporting, we are not sure
if this is the right term for this action knowing the existence of legal claim to North
Borneo, thousands of Filipinos from Sabah for being illegals and for lack of necessary
documents. There are allegations of inhuman treatments and rapes by Malaysian authorities
which are currently being investigated by both governments. It is also good to point out
that illegal Indonesians are likewise being sent home through Kalimantan (Borneo part
of Indonesia). Both the Philippine and the Indonesian governments have protested the
mass deportation and have indignation rallies against the Malaysian action.

Since the time memorial the numerous ethnic tribes in the southern Philippines notably
the Tausugs and Badjaos have been traversing the Celebes Sea from Sulu to Borneo and
other parts of Indonesia. These tribes are sea faring people and settled from anywhere
around the region. To curtail these movements, the Malaysians have decided to demand
document from the Filipinos in Sabah. Undocumented Filipinos were deported and could
only be admitted back when there are necessary papers presented. This situation is
extremely hard specially to those who have fled the secessionist war during the seventies
and eighties as they are refugees and do not have any travel documents. These Muslim
Filipinos have considered Sabah as part of their domain as their ancestors have been
doing centuries ago. That part of southeast asia is bound by common religion, history
and people.

NOW WHAT?

As per official Philippine government stand, the Philippines will continue legal action
through the international courts and also by bringing this claim again to the attention
of the Malaysian government. One of the immediate objectives is to have the rent increased to
what is a more realistic amount while a claim is still being disputed.

There are apprehensions, as some quarters are claiming, that nothing will come out of this
revived interest in the Sabah claim, they are saying that the Philippine government officials
as in the past can be bribed to lose interest in the claim - there is no concrete evidence to
this effect. The Malaysians are hoping that it will die a natural death for lack of will on
the Philippine claimants to pursue further the claim over the years. The longer the dispute
is settled, the harder (or maybe lesser) for the claimants to get any settlement.

Will the heirs get a just settlement in form of monetary compensation? The heirs had been
offered money before by the Malaysians and have rejected the idea. Will the settlement comes
with some portion of the disputed land for displaced Filipino muslims in Sabah? In any issue
involving property dispute, possession is everything.

Will the Arroyo administration be transparent in negotiations with the Mahathir government
or some kind of a deal will be struck without consultations with the other parties involved?

We will see what will transpire in the future.

Tubigon, Bohol / Firecrackers up in smoke in Tubigon
December 31, 2007, 10:18:08 PM
P500,000 worth of Bohol firecrackers up in smoke

Eleven firecracker stalls and pyrotechnics worth P500,000 were destroyed by fire at the public market in Tubigon town in Bohol province Sunday afternoon.

A radio dzMM report said the blaze started from a stall owned by a certain Reynante Sadura. The incident took place between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The report said a customer with a cigarette accidentally lit Sadura's firecrackers.

Authorities estimated property damage at P500,000. No one was hurt in the incident.

The fire in Bohol took place hours before a similar incident, which was also caused by a lighted cigarette, happened in Rosario, Cavite.

Fire from a firecracker stand partially gutted the public market of Rosario town in Cavite province before dawn on Monday, New Year's Eve.

Firefighters said at least 20 stalls were gutted during the blaze that started from a firecracker store inside the Rosario Public Market around 12:30 a.m.

Mayor Nonong Ricafrente immediately implemented a ban on firecrackers after the incident. He has also ordered authorities to confiscate all firecrackers being sold in town.

"Umpisa mamaya ay kukumpiskahin natin ang mga makikita nating paputok. Puwede naman tayong mag-celebrate ng walang paputok eh (We confiscate all firecrackers starting in the morning. We can celebrate [New Year] without firecrackers)," Ricafrente said.

Arson investigators, meanwhile, have yet to determine how the fire started and the amount of property damage.

A child identified as Jaidilyn Sagpao told investigators that he saw a man named Albert Espinosa throw a lighted cigarette into one of the firecracker stalls.

Espinosa, however, said Sagpao should be the one to blame for the blaze because the child allegedly lighted a "piccolo" and threw it into the stalls.

DOH warns vs 'piccolo'
The fire took place in Rosario as the health department warned the public Sunday against the danger of using "piccolo" on New Year’s Eve.

"We are calling on parents to keep piccolo out of the reach of their young children," Health Secretary Francisco Duque said.

"We believe that many children have them and are just waiting for the big bang tonight (Monday, New Year's Eve)," he added

Duque asked the police to strictly enforce the ban against piccolo and other illegal firecrackers to prevent injuries and loss of lives.

Duque said piccolo has caused more injuries, especially among children, than any other firecracker or pyrotechnic device this year.

Data from the National Epidemiology Center showed that piccolo has been consistently the number one cause of all firecracker injuries, he added.

Duque said of the 134 firecracker-related injuries recorded from December 21-29, some of 30 cases or 22 percent of the total were due to piccolo.

"A big 28 percent of the injuries affected the eye and 30 percent were children 10 years and below," he said.

Duque said piccolo is easily accessible to children because it is not expensive.

A box containing 60 pieces of the small firecracker that is lighted like a match stick costs only P10, he added.

Synopsis:
Tail-end of a cold front affecting Eastern and Southern Luzon.
Forecast:
Eastern and Southern Luzon will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers. The rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with passing light rains. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon with moderate to rough seas. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate blowing from the northeast with slight to moderate seas.

Weather Outlook: Dec. 29-Jan. 1

Feel free to travel across Metro Manila and much of Central Luzon this weekend given the expected generally fair weather.

Tagaytay City and Clark Zone as well as Baguio are also indicated to remain mostly rain-free.

Given the effects of a tail end of a cold front, Tuguegarao and Laoag can continue to see shower activity, so will the Bicol Region, Aurora and Quezon, Puerto Prinsesa, Bacolod, Cebu and Tacloban.

Much of Mindanao may have to make room for hit-or-miss showers and possible thunderstorms over the next two days.

Meantime, PAGASA says, there are no tropical cyclones in sight, and much of the country can see relatively good weather for the remainder of the year and into the start of 2008.

Rescue operations slow after Indonesian landslide

Reuters

JAKARTA - Hundreds of Indonesians camped in government offices on Sunday after their homes were destroyed in landslides on Java island, as rescuers struggled to dig through thick mud in their search for dozens of missing people.

Nearly 100 people were dead or missing after landslides triggered by torrential rains buried houses across the Central Java province this week, but rescue operations have moved at a slow pace because of the blanket of mud that has cut off roads.

Officials said two excavators and four water sprays were used to unearth the 6-7 meters of mud that covered the land in Tawangmangu area, worst hit by the landslides, while thousands of villagers pitched in with basic tools such as spades and hoes.

"This is a difficult place. We can't easily have excavators dropped in here," Colonel Ngakan Gede Sugiartha, who monitors the rescue operations, told Reuters.

Landslides and floods are frequent in Indonesia, where tropical downpours can quickly soak hillsides and years of deforestation often mean there is little vegetation to hold the soil.

Indonesia's leading environmental group, Walhi, has said ecological destruction caused by deforestation, land conversions and chaotic planning contributed to the disasters.

Floods up to two meters (6.5 feet) had also inundated several other districts on Java island, devastating homes and bringing misery to
residents, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate into temporary shelters.

A relief official said there were no fears of disease and there was enough food and medicines for people who had lost their homes.

"They have enough food, medicine, clothing and blankets sent to them," said Lieutenant Colonel Mustain of the military search and rescue team

Pakistani TV shows pictures of Bhutto 'attackers'

Reuters

ISLAMABAD - A Pakistani television channel broadcast on Sunday grainy still pictures of what it said appeared to be two men who attacked and killed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

Former prime minister Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack on Thursday as she stood up through the sun-roof of her bullet-proof vehicle to wave to supporter as she left an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi.

The government has blamed al Qaeda.

Dawn News Television showed three pictures it said it had obtained from an amateur photographer.

One showed two men standing in the crowd outside the rally ground before Bhutto left.

One was a clean-cut young man wearing sun glasses, a white shirt and dark waist coat. Behind him stood a man with a white shawl over his head, who Dawn said was believed to be the bomber.

Two other photographs showed the clean-cut man pointing a pistol at Bhutto as she left the rally.

He appeared to be about 10 feet from Bhutto, standing on the left of her vehicle, pointing the gun with his right hand as she faced away from him.

Authorities said three shots were fired at Bhutto moments before a suicide bomber set off explosives. As well as Bhutto, 23 people were killed.

Authorities have not said how many attackers they believed were involved.

Senior police and government officials declined immediate comment saying a four-officer team was handling the investigation.

The government said Bhutto was killed when the force of the blast smashed her head into a lever on the sun-roof, which fractured her skull.

Her party dismisses that as "ludicrous" saying she was killed by a bullet in the head.

Doctors did not carry out a post-mortem of Bhutto's body on the instructions of her family, officials say.

The Interior Ministry said on Saturday her body could be exhumed for more tests if her party wanted.

Aging rockers outshine newcomers in 2007

Agence France-Presse

PARIS - A wind of reconciliation swept the music industry in 2007, making reunions of aging rockers the defining theme of the year.

Led Zeppelin rounded off a year of landmark reformations in early December with a triumphant return to the stage in London 27 years after the band split in 1980, following the death of drummer John Bonham.

Most fans had assumed they would never take the stage together again -- but in September they announced the reunion for a tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the band four decades ago and died last year.

But Led Zeppelin, musical trailblazers the first time round, were far from being original in 2007, when a slew of leading names from the past four decades reformed to great acclaim.

The Police surprised by announcing their reunion after more than 20 years apart, though most fans believed personal resentments at the heart of the group would prevent a comeback.

Singer Sting and drummer Stewart Copeland once came to blows during a tour of the United States and had reportedly refused to be in the same studio together while recording a "best of" album in 1986.

Mellowed by age and doubtless aware of the immensely lucrative nature of making-up, the band launched a world tour in May, set to continue into 2008.

Phil Collins too joined up with his Genesis band mates again (minus Peter Gabriel) for a giant tour, Lou Reed was back performing, and Van Halen announced concerts for the first time in 22 years with original singer David Lee Roth.

The Sex Pistols played a concert in London on November 8 and Black Sabbath under the name of Heaven and Hell and The Eagles were also part of the so-called "heritage act" revival.

Sly and the Family Stone, The Who, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, and what remains of The Doors, also headed once more for the road, drawing fans to often expensively priced concerts for an opportunity to relive the past.

Elsewhere in 2007, the music and tribulations of British soul singer Amy Winehouse were a source of fascination for the public and a talking point in the industry.

The 24-year-old Londoner won awards for her scintillating soul music, reminiscent of the best Motown classics, but her drug abuse and problems with the police meant her private life cast a pall over her achievements.

In the United States, Kanye West confirmed himself as the hottest American hip hop star of the moment after outselling 50 Cent in a highly publicized battle between the two artists who released albums on the same day.

Other highlights included the discovery of Mika, a US-Lebanese singer based in London, who shot to fame with his first album of Freddie Mercury-style 80s pop, and the return of Pete Doherty.

Doherty -- former singer of British rock group The Libertines, boyfriend of model Kate Moss and another British star with serious drug problems -- released a critically acclaimed second album with his group Babyshambles.

But the return of old reunited bands was the news that made the headlines, and the reasons appeared two-fold, with Neil Young's famous saying "Rock and Roll Will Never Die" and Frank Zappa's hit album "We're Only in It For the Money" offering clues.

"Over the last couple of years it seems more acceptable for reunions to happen," said the editor-in-chief of British music magazine Classic Rock, Scott Rowley.

"There was a certain stigma before because it might be embarrassing or seemed like they (the artists) were looking back," he said. "The second reason for the reunions is there's lots of money on offer.

"If you believe the record labels, where the real money lies now is in touring. Record sales are down so bands are making a vast proportion of income from touring," he added.

Tickets and merchandising are usually priced at a premium given the "one-off" nature of reunions, and taking advantage of the older more wealthy demographics of the fans.

What's more, a reunion tour reinvigorates a band's back-catalogue of records, boosting sales and enabling record labels to issue re-releases and DVDs.

Seeing elderly rockers back on stage, minus some hair and appetite for late nights, appeared to inspire others from the more modern era in 2007.

The Verve, Rage Against the Machine, The Happy Mondays, The Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and The Mary Chain and, lest one forget, The Spice Girls, were among leading groups from the 1980s and 1990s to reform.

Alexis Petridis, chief music writer for Britain's The Guardian newspaper, summed up how former stars upstaged newcomers this year with his thoughts on Britain's Glastonbury festival, one of the biggest music events in the world.

"There was something troubling about returning home with the knowledge that the most exciting, unpredictable, iconoclastic thing you saw all weekend was not a thrilling new artist, but a sixty-something heritage-rock act," he wrote.

For 2008, Rowley says to watch out for a possible reunion of Pink Floyd (minus Roger Waters).

Other possible reunions include 70s rockers Rod Stewart and The Faces, 80s heroes Guns and Roses, The Smiths or The Jam.

Estrada: I repeat, I am not running!

Former president Joseph Estrada on Sunday reiterated he will not pursue any political ambition, noting he will not run in the 2010 presidential race.

In his speech during the gift-giving activities in depressed areas in Manila, Estrada emphasized that he would no longer seek another shot at the presidency come 2010.

"I am not running. Somebody else is running," the ex-President told a crowd of almost 500 in Baseco and Parola Compound, Smokey Mountain and Vitas in Manila Sunday morning.

He also clarified that the gift-giving activities he and his allies have been conducting for the past days is not campaigning.

Estrada, along with his wife Loi, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, former Sen. Ernesto Maceda and defeated Batangas Governor Ricky Recto, started giving away food packages, containing rice, cans of sardines and other food items, to the residents around 9:45 a.m.

Ronaldo Lumbao, president of People's Movement Against Poverty (PMAP), was also seen with the Estrada group during the gift-giving activity.

PMAP is a people's organization which has been an ally of Estrada.

Last Saturday, Estrada also distributed gifts to residents living in some areas in Quezon City and Manila.

Estrada went to Payatas area in Quezon City at 9 a.m. and started giving Christmas gifts to residents.

He then proceeded to Barangay Pag-asa and North Triangle and distributed gifts to residents who warmly welcomed him.

Reports said the pardoned president’s last stop was at an orphanage in Paco, Manila where he gave gifts to orphaned children.

The Sandiganbayan convicted Estrada for plunder charges last September 12 and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

However, his sentence was short-lived after President Arroyo granted him executive clemency on October 24.

He has since embarked on a "Lakbay Pasasalamat" to thank his supporters and he said to tell the "truth on his plunder conviction" by the anti-graft court.

Observers have said that he was preparing for a presidential run in 2010.

In his speech before resettlers in Tanay town in Rizal Friday, the former president asserted that he could still run for the presidency in 2010 because what he got was an absolute pardon and there was nothing in his release that stated it was a conditional pardon.

However, Estrada said that as of now, he has no plans of running and that his goal is to unite the opposition and field just one candidate for the next presidential elections.

Estrada's interpretation was contested by Special Prosecutor Dennis Villa Ignacio who said part of the conditions for the grant of executive clemency was that he would not run again for public office.

Zamboanga del Norte mayors condemn Jalosjos re-arrest

The mayors of Zamboanga del Norte towns met Friday to condemn the re-arrest of convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group reported.

The local officials from the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) chapter in Zamboanga del Norte showed up wearing black armbands as they announced plans to lower the flag to half-mast in their respective towns as a sign of protest.

At least 20 mayors showed up in front of the San Ramon Penal Colony here where Jalosjos has been detained after his surrender last week, ABS-CBN News correspondent Queenie Casimiro reported.

The mayors presented two resolutions which they say were passed unanimously by them.

The first resolution condemned what the mayors called as Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez's "double standard justice" and his alleged violation of Jalosjos's rights.

The second resolution, meanwhile, ordered all local government units in the province to place a black band in front of their municipal buildings in order to show their opposition to the actions of the DOJ secretary.

After the meeting, the mayors marched towards the San Ramon Penal Farm, where they visited the former congressman.

Dapitan City Councilor Apple Marie Agolong said a similar resolution condemning Gonzalez was also approved by the city council.

The officials led by Salug town Mayor Jesus Lim wore black armbands to protest what they described as the illegal detention of Jalosjos.

Lim presided over a brief news conference outside the gates of the penal colony and distributed copies of the signed resolution they approved Thursday.

Lim said the order made by Gonzalez against Jalosjos was "highly condemnable and a downright deprivation of the human rights" of their former congressman.

"Indeed, he is a victim of injustice after his freedom has been certified by the Bureau of Parole and Pardon," Sibuco Mayor Nurbi Edding added.

LMP secretary Leon Postigo Mayor Rolando Tobleza told newsmen the league also approved a resolution for the black armbands.

The armbands will stay until Jalosjos is given justice and released from detention, Tobleza said.

Tobleza said copies of the resolutions would be sent to President Arroyo, Senate President Manuel Villar Jr. and Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

The mayors later marched half a kilometer into the penal farm and handed the resolution to Jalosjos to show their sympathy.

San Ramon prison officials admitted being confused on the status of Jalosjos since there was no order to detain the former lawmaker.

Officials, however, prevented the media from getting inside the penal colony, citing the two directives issued by the Justice Department.

Malacañang, on the other hand, downplayed the protest actions staged by the LMP, saying they might have been misinformed about the real issue on Jalosjos.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the expressions of protests were without basis and "might have been caused by misunderstanding."

"There was an actual order stopping the release. There was an order to revoke the faulty document," Bunye said.

"I think we should not argue based on the wrong premise," he said.

Bunye said the protesting local officials, some of whom are Jalosjos’ relatives, may have the impression the release order brandished by the convict was legal.

Malacañang on Thursday denied it had earlier ordered the release of Jalosjos.

Jalosjos was convicted in 1997 for statutory rape and sentenced to two life terms.

President Arroyo commuted his prison sentence to just 16 years, three months and three days.

Jalosjos was given a release order by jail officials based on computation of the time the former lawmaker had served, counting allowance for good behavior.

The computation was, however, was questioned by Gonzalez in recalling the release order.

Jalosjos turned himself in a few hours after flying to Dapitan last week.

Jalosjos insisted he was legally released, carrying with him the release papers.

Jalosjos filed a writ of habeas corpus questioning his recommitment order by the Department of Justice. - With reports from Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News and Paolo Romero of The Philippine Star

VP de Castro vows to help abused Pinay DH in Jeddah

Vice President Noli de Castro has vowed to help an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Saudi Arabia who was reportedly raped three times in Saudi Arabia.

Melissa, sister of "Anna" who was working in Jeddah, went to ABS-CBN to seek the help of de Castro who is also the presidential adviser on OFWs.

Melissa said her sister, who is a single parent from Cainta town in Rizal province, applied for a job and went to Saudi Arabia supposedly as a juice maker. Salazar ended up however as a domestic helper in the Middle Eastern kingdom.

Through text messages from "Anna", Melissa learned of her sister’s harrowing experiences.

"Oo ginalaw ako 3 beses huwag ka na tawag sa agency. OWWA tawagan u ayoko na dito... (Yes they abused me three times. Don't call the agency. Call OWWA [Overseas Workers' Welfare Administration])" the OFW said in one of text messages read by Melissa to ABS-CBN.

Melissa said "Anna" told her that she wanted to escape after she was raped by her Arab employer.

"Takas na ko bukas. May ginawa sa akin yong manyak. Tawag kayo sa OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) sabihin ninyo kinuha yong kontrata ko nung tauhan ng agency sa airport (I'm going to escape tomorrow. My employer did something to me. Call OWWA and tell them that the [placement] agency took my contract at the airport)," Melissa read in another text message from "Anna".

Melissa said "Anna" was able to escape her employer by tying the ends of bedsheets and climbing down from a window.

"Andito na si Manyak tatakas ako pag may pasok na ayoko na dito sukang suka ako sa sarili ko, hirap na ako (The Maniac is here, I will escape. I no longer want to be here. I can no loger bear myself. It’s hard for me)," said Salazar in one text messages read by Melissa.

Melissa said that after Salazar escaped however, her sister said two more Arabs raped her in separate instances while she was going to the Philippine consulate.

"Tapos nong December 25 alas sais nagtext [siya]. Ni-rape din daw siya nong dalawang Arabo (Then on December 25 at six, she sent another text message. She said she was raped by two Arabs)," said Melissa.

Melissa said "Anna" was now under the care of the Philippine consulate in Jeddah and was asking the government to help her return to the Philippines after her ordeals.

After discussing "Anna"'s case, De Castro, in his "Para Sa 'Yo Bayan" radio program, vowed to help and directed OWWA and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration to extend assistance to "Anna".

The Philippine consulate has immediately started an investigation into the case.

Music and Video / NU Rock Awards 2007
December 29, 2007, 04:56:58 PM

veritable typhoon of awards rained down on Bamboo as the band won 6 out of  the 15 awards given out at the 2007 NU107 Rock Awards held at the World Trade Center on November 30. The quartet won the coveted "Artist of the Year" and "Listener's Choice " awards as well as Best Live Act.

It was highly noticable though that it wasn't a clean sweep for Bamboo. The Best Vocalist catageory evaded Bamboo Manalac, but went instead to Kat Agarrado of the funk/soul band Sinosikat. DOH: 119 people injured in pre-New Year's Day revelry

The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday said a total of 118 people have been injured due to firecracker blasts this month, ABS-CBN News reported.

As of 6 a.m. Saturday, the DOH said that out of 119 cases it has received from the field, only 1 was victim of a stray bullet.

The DOH, which still on white alert, has been monitoring victims of firecrackers and other incidents as the New Year's Day draws near.

The white alert status of the DOH has begun in December and would end on the second week of January.

Most of the victims were using the popular firecracker "piccolo". Eight of the victims had their fingers cut off because of the severity of the damage while seven were hit in the eyes by firecracker explosions.

Dr. Eric Tayag, DOH's director of the National Epidemiology Center, said Secrertary Francisco Duque III would be making rounds in hospitals to monitor the victims of firecracker blasts on New Years' eve.

The medicines, such as tetanus toxoid, and treatment of minor injuries due to firecrackers are free in government hospitals.

Meanwhile, Tayag also advised revelers to take it easy eating food during the New Day's celebration, particularly those who have diabetes and heart ailments. People should also stay away from ham and other salty foods, he said.

Pacman eyes another world championship

Champion boxer Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has vowed to win the Olympics of Cockfighting, the 2008 National Cockers’ Association (NCA) World Championship Derby set Jan. 8, 10 and 12 at the Rizal Multipurpose Building in Pasig City.

Along with Pacquiao, Philip Chiongbian, the scion of the prominent Chiongbian family, and Bebot Uy will represent Mindanao in the NCA derby.

Manolo Lopez of Meralco, Pepito Ngo, the tandem of Vice Mayor Nestor Mercado and Lito Orillaza, former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr. and Jun Marasigan have long prepared for the NCA blockbuster derby.

Joey and Buboy delos Santos, heavyweights from Southern Luzon, the Madlambayan Brothers and Alex Escalona of Central Luzon are favorites to win the prestigious title.

Not to be outdone are bosom buddies James Uy, William Go, and Allan Siaco, who have all promised to bag the NCA World Championship honors this year.

Jet Fernando has also been energetically preparing for the NCA derby. He has the most number of imported aces from the United States. He visits annually prominent breeders in the United States, and buys his aces from them.

Butch Pichay, on the other hand, is seriously eyeing the NCA World Championship Derby trophy this year. The trophy was designed and handcrafted by renowned National Artist Eduardo Castrillo.

Btaw noh,

Jaloslos, to me, looks like a good person. Not that it's good to sleep with a minor, but he doesn't seem to be a major a-hole like all the other rich jerks in our country. Ans he seems to be beloved by his constituents in Dipolog.

Mr Brownman, do you think puede na pud i-pardon si Hubert Webb ug Paco Larranaga? Both of them still maintain that they were in the US at the time sa ilang mga krimen.

What do you think?

This might create a riot though, both the Vizconde and Chiong rape/murder were high-profile cases.

Sa akong panan-aw lang Ms C2, with regards sa Viscode case parti nila Hubert ug si Paco and company murag bug-at ang mga ebidinsya nga guipresenta kontra nila considering nga heinous crime ang kaso nila, but what i heard just lately, nag pastor na kuno si Hubert sa sulud sa prisohan meaning nagbag-o na siguro pag-abot nila ug edad 70 years pwidi na sila maka apply for parole, sa karun murag dili pa sigoro sila makagawas sa bilibid.

Erap

Estrada happy to see godchildren for first time in 6 years
December 24, 2007 18:31:00
Jocelyn Uy
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines--Yes, ninong (the godfather) is back home this Christmas.

Spending Christmas for the first time in six years outside his prison cum resthouse in Tanay, Rizal, deposed president Joseph Estrada is now more accessible to his "inaanaks" (godchildren).

This was among the many things that Estrada enumerated on Monday when asked how Christmas Day would be different for him as a free man.

Estrada, ousted by a 4-day civilian-military revolt in 2001, was convicted of plunder then granted executive clemency last October.

For the past six Christmases he spent in jail, noche buena (the traditional Christmas meal) was limited to his immediate family and the prison guards, he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) in a phone interview on Monday.

"My inaanaks could not come because Tanay was too far," Estrada said, referring to his 15-hectare estate on the hills of Rizal province where he was detained from 2004 to 2007.

He said that Yuletide in detention was a simple affair. He would just invite the parish priest to hold a mass there in the afternoon of Dec. 24.

On Oct. 26 or two months before Christmas, Estrada walked out a free man after accepting executive clemency from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

At the time of his conviction in September, he said he would never accept a pardon from Arroyo, who assumed power after the so-called EDSA-2 revolt.

At any rate, accepting the pardon allowed him to freely enjoy all the niceties of the Yuletide season without having to seek the consent of the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court, which tried his landmark plunder case.

The 70-year-old former president sounded jolly on the phone. He disclosed that aside from his relatives and grandchildren, he was expecting his godchildren to visit him during the holidays. The gift-giving part, however, did not worry him.

"They're all grown up. Some of them are already married. They are now the ones who give me gifts," he said with a chuckle.

But "freedom and the new lease on life is the best Christmas gift I can receive," he stated.

Estrada said he planned to visit his ailing 102-year-old mother, Mary Ejercito, at the San Juan Medical Center, then attend the Simbang Gabi (the traditional dawn Christmas masses) that was to be held before midnight at the San Juan town plaza before proceeding to his Polk Street residence for a "modest" noche buenaâ€"mostly Filipino delicacies such as sapin-sapin, hot pandesal and putoâ€"to be shared by his family and relatives.

Still hoping that his mother would recover from her ailment, Estrada said he would request that a mass be held on Dec. 25 inside his mother's hospital room.

"It is really depressing to see her connected to all those tubes. I am still hoping for a miracle. But I am really happy to be home. I have been pardoned so I also pardon those who have conspired to illegally oust me," said Estrada.

In a statement, the former president extended his Christmas greetings to his supporters.

"This Christmas is most meaningful for me because it will be the first time after six years I will celebrate it freely with my loved ones, friends, and our people.

"This Christmas presents me the occasion to express my gratitude and appreciation to our people who continued to support me and have faith in me," he said, as he called on the nation to unite for a just, peaceful and prosperous country.

BILIBID BOSS SINIBAK!

Nina ROSE MIRANDA at JULIET DE LOZA

4.9 magnitude quake jolts Isabela

First Posted 04:35pm (Mla time) 12/28/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- A 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook the province of Isabela Friday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The quake struck at 1:13 p.m. at a depth of 33.8 kilometers, 70 kilometers from the northern city of Ilagan, the US Geological Survey said.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates collide and cause frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
