Death Star Petition Gets White House Rebuff

The Huffington Post|By Ethan Klapper
01/11/2013

Sorry, folks. The Obama administration will not be building a Death Star.

The White House responded Friday night to a petition on its website urging construction of a Death Star for job creation and national defense purposes by 2016.

oh, yes, isn't it obvious that the big multinational pharmaceutical lobby is stronger than the catholic church lobby?  isn't it strange that our country is going into this while some states in the u.s. have recently done away with similar laws?

if we must call this bill our road to education, were we really uneducated before the bill was passed?

hehe, one thing with the powerful forces of racism, nationalism and commercialism is that even a national president gets myopic enough to fail to see that the philippines was largely catholic at the time.

at least, that president acknowledged that christ also died for us. ;D

McKinley disingenuously disavowed the U.S. military action that brought the Philippines under U.S. control, and acknowledged, directly and indirectly, the equally powerful forces of racism, nationalism, and especially commercialism, that shaped American actions. (http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5575/)

And then I went to bed, and went to sleep, and slept soundly, and the next morning I sent for the chief engineer of the War Department (our map-maker), and I told him to put the Philippines on the map of the United States (pointing to a large map on the wall of his office), and there they are, and there they will stay while I am President!

(3) that we could not leave them to themselvesâ€"they were unfit for self-governmentâ€"and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain’s was; and

(4) that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died.
#25818
And one night late it came to me this wayâ€"I don’t know how it was, but it came:

(1) That we could not give them back to Spainâ€"that would be cowardly and dishonorable;

(2) that we could not turn them over to France and Germanyâ€"our commercial rivals in the Orientâ€"that would be bad business and discreditable;
#25819
When I next realized that the Philippines had dropped into our laps I confess I did not know what to do with them. I sought counsel from all sidesâ€"Democrats as well as Republicansâ€"but got little help. I thought first we would take only Manila; then Luzon; then other islands perhaps also. I walked the floor of the White House night after night until midnight; and I am not ashamed to tell you, gentlemen, that I went down on my knees and prayed Almighty God for light and guidance more than one night.
#25820
When the Spanish War broke out Dewey was at Hongkong, and I ordered him to go to Manila and to capture or destroy the Spanish fleet, and he had to; because, if defeated, he had no place to refit on that side of the globe, and if the Dons were victorious they would likely cross the Pacific and ravage our Oregon and California coasts. And so he had to destroy the Spanish fleet, and did it! But that was as far as I thought then.

William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897 until his assassination in September 1901. (wikipedia)

Mckinley to a delegation of Methodist church leaders:

Hold a moment longer! Not quite yet, gentlemen! Before you go I would like to say just a word about the Philippine business. I have been criticized a good deal about the Philippines, but don’t deserve it. The truth is I didn’t want the Philippines, and when they came to us, as a gift from the gods, I did not know what to do with them.

Calculations based on the modern theory of cosmology, drawing on Albert Einstein’s work, suggest anything larger than about 1.2 billion light-years across would violate the Cosmological Principle, said Clowes and colleagues. (A light-year is the distance light travels in a year.)

This quasar group ranges in size from one-third larger than that critical size, to more than three times larger, depending on where its width is measured. It lies about 8.7 billion light-years away. It’s “difficult to fathom the scale” of the structure, Clowes said. But “our team has been looking at similar cases which add further weight to this challenge [to the Cosmological Principle] and we will be continuing to investigate these fascinating phenomena.”

The Cosmological Principle is a philosophical as well as a scientific statement. It’s an outgrowth of the conviction that people don’t occupy a unique place in the grand scheme of things-- the very idea that brought scientists such as Galileo and Copernicus into conflict with Church authorities in their time.

The newly found clump is an estimated 1,600 times wider than the distance between our Milky Way galaxy and the neighboring Andromeda Galaxy. Such a size, the researchers said, is sufficient to possibly violate the “Cosmological Principle”â€"the assumption accepted by most cosmologists that the universe, seen at a large enough scale, looks the same from any viewpoint. Most previous observational evidence supports the principle, but it has never been proven.

It would take a spaceship travelling at the speed of light four thousand million years to get from one end of the cluster to the other.

To give a sense of scale, our galaxy (the Milky Way) is separated from its nearest neighbour, the Andromeda galaxy, by two and a half million light years.

unimaginable.  beyond comprehension.  four thousand million years?  does this mean four billion years, as in 4,000,000,000?

don't be so sad, guys.  there is hope.  the following may pass muster:

Meet the Fokkens: Life with the twins who were Amsterdam's oldest prostitutes... and why one of them finally decided to retire

    *Louise and Martine Fokkens, both 70, began their careers in prostitution in their early 20s

    *Louise retired two years ago after arthritis made it difficult to 'do the sexual positions'

    *Martine relies on a flow of loyal regulars to keep her income steady

    *But behind their jolly smiles and cheery dispositions lies a lifetime of abuse, violence and exploitation
