And so Accepted Wisdom on Paper-Folding ruled, until 2001.

That was when a high school student, Britney Gallivan (of Pomona, California) was given a maths problem. She would get an extra maths credit, if she took up the option of solving the problem of folding a sheet in half 12 times. She tried and failed with reasonably-sized sheets of paper.

for the formula on how it was done, read more at http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2005/12/21/1523497.htm

A typical claim on the Internet might run, "No matter its size or thickness, no piece of paper can be folded in half more than 7 times", and as you stare sadly at your block of folded paper, you tend to agree.

In fact, if you had a sheet of paper, and folded it in half 50 times, how thick would it be?

The answer is about 100 million kilometres, which is about two thirds of the distance between the Sun and the Earth.

Suppose that you start with an standard A4 sheet of paper - about 300 mm long, and about 0.05 mm thick.

The first time you fold it in half, it becomes 150 mm long and 0.1 mm thick. The second fold takes it to 75 mm long and 0.2 mm thick. By the 8th fold (if you can get there), you have a blob of paper 1.25 mm long, but 12.8 mm thick. It's now thicker than it is long, and, if you're trying to bend it, seems to have the structural integrity of steel.

5. The RH Bills are based on wrong economics.

Is there a correlation between population growth and economic development? “No correlation” is the answer of Simon Kuznets, Nobel Prize winner in the science of economics.[9]

Is population control one of the ingredients for high economic growth? No. This is the conclusion of the 2008 Commission on Growth and Development headed by Nobel prize winner Michael Spence. The factors for high growth are: leadership, openness to knowledge, stable finances, market allocation, investment and savings.[10]

4. The RH Bills will promote the spread of AIDS.

Will the use of condoms lower the rate of HIV/AIDS in a country? It will increase it, according to the “best evidence” in the world, concluded Harvard Director for AIDS Prevention, Edward C. Green. Availability of condoms makes people take wilder sexual risks, thus worsening the spread of the disease.[8]

3. The RH Bills will destroy the family.

Will the greater availability of contraception improve the conditions of the family? Contraceptives bring about the downgrading of marriage, more extramarital sex, more fatherless children, more single mothers, according to the studies of Nobel prize winner, George Akerlof.[7]

2. The RH Bills will injure women’s health.

Is the pill safe? The International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2007 reported that the pill causes cancer, giving it the highest level of carcinogenicity, the same as cigarettes and asbestos.[4] It also causes stroke,[5] and significantly increases the risk of heart attacks.[6]

Science Facts on the RH Bills
IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

The world’s leading scientific experts resolve the issues regarding the systematic, nationwide distribution of artificial contraceptives.

1. The RH Bills will kill children.

When does human life begin? At fertilization, when the sperm penetrates the egg. This was the unanimous response of medical experts (including doctors from Harvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic) at an eight day hearing of the US Senate.[1]

Do birth control pills and the IUD kill the embryo? Yes, the pill has a secondary “postfertilization effect”, according to the scientific journal of the American Medical Association.[2] The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology pronounced that the intrauterine device brings about the “destruction of the early embryo.”[3]

7  Wear boy-shorts underneath your pants to make you look thinner and not have those embarrassing 'underwear lumps'.

very informative jamo, salamat sa nag open sa thread.

great.  you're back.

p.s.  no sweat.  you dress well yourself.
#25723
6  Don't just follow fashions. Choose clothes that will flatter your figure and suit you. Not all fashionable clothes were meant for everybody, so find the clothes that are right for you.

#25724
4  Check the quality of clothes. Make sure they don't stretch too much, and make sure the material is good quality.

#25725
3  Wear a good bra and underwear when you try clothes on. Make sure the item fits well, is not too tight or loose and does not have any unsightly bulges.

#25726
2  Wear clothes that will emphasize your best parts and create the illusion of a very fit body.

Thinner fabrics are more slimming, but wear a tank or camisole under things that you can see through.

Tops and bottoms of one color will make you look thinner, but be sure to do different shades of the same color.

Wear clothes that fit. Wearing clothes that are too tight or too big will make you look bigger.

Wearing too large clothes will exaggerate your figure not hide it. But never wear a shirt that exaggerates your body too much.

Avoid belts unless you have a slim waist.

Use accessories carefully. Looking at too many accessories will give you the illusion of being too big.
#25727
Steps

1  Wear the right kind of clothes for your body. Don't buy clothes that are too tight or too short. It won't look nice, especially if you don't have a thin figure. Good clothing often starts with the fit.

High collars shorten necks.

Tight tops with short sleeves and breast pockets are detracting from your figure.

Shoes with straps shorten your legs.

The torso can be shortened or narrowed with seam lines, belts, bows, and collars.

A short necklace can shorten your neck.

A scarf or belt that hangs down toward the legs will make the legs appear longer. Knitted texture, lace, floras, prints, and plaids can assist in creating an illusion.

Thicker vertical lines in plaids lengthens and slims.

Wear a larger print where you want people to look and smaller print where you do not want them to look.

An all over print can camouflage figure problems, but prints here and there can create a fuller you.

Prints around the neck and over the shoulder can make your shoulders appear wider. Just wear prints near the parts of your figure's assets, because they are usually more eye catching than a solid color.

When buying pants be sure they fit well. Defects are emphasized in a pair of pants that may go unnoticed in a skirt.

â€œThe very positive message here is that while we’re losing so much in waste, the population growth and the demand for food across the world - we can meet it if we just reduce the waste. We don’t need to cut down lots more forests and plant a lot more crops," he said.

And with the global population predicted to peak at 9.5 billion people by 2075, the report concludes that reducing wastage must be part of the plan to meet that demand.

Director of Policy Brendan Cox said, “Families are having to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their children and nobody should have to make that choice."

Large amounts of land, energy, fertilizers and water are also lost in the production of food which simply end up as waste, according to the report authors. But they say there is another message in the figures.

#25736
That’s not the fault of the stores, says Richard Dodd of the British Retail Consortium, which represents supermarkets.

“In fact, these are EU marketing rules and the retailers have been at the forefront of pushing for a relaxation in them. And that has happened. Back in 2009, 26 different items of produce were taken off those lists," he said.

Many aid agencies and charities welcomed the report for highlighting the huge amount of waste at a time when millions of people suffer from malnutrition.

Aid agency Save the Children says there is enough food in the world to feed every child - but still 2.3 million children die as a result of hunger every year.
#25737
â€œ[Food] is trying to rot all the time, so you’ve got to keep it dry, you’ve got to keep it cool and you’ve got to transport it and use it as quickly as possible. So I think when you haven’t got the infrastructure, you haven’t got the railways, you haven’t got the shipping, you’re doing damage to it every time you move it," he said.

In developed economies such as in Europe and the United States, the report says more efficient farming practices ensure that more of the food produced reaches consumers. But it claims millions of tons of food is thrown away because it’s past its sell-by date, or sometimes because it doesn’t reach the supermarket shelves at all.

“Certainly once you get it to the supermarket, they have very high standards about what it ought to look like, never mind about how it ought to taste or whether it’s edible or valuable. But exactly how it ought to look. And so we throw a lot away just because it’s not cosmetically attractive," he said.

#25738
Every year the world produces around four billion tons of food. And between a third and half of it goes to waste, according to the report from the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The group says that in Southeast Asian countries for example, losses of rice can range from 37% to 80% of total production. Much of this can be traced to how it  is harvested, stored and transported, says report co-author Colin Brown.

Report: Up to Half of World Food Production is Wasted

January 14, 2013

LONDON â€" Up to half of the food the world produces goes to waste, according to a new report. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Britain says cutting waste is vital if the world is to meet food demand as the global population soars.

In a barn hundreds of meters long, thousands of chickens are producing eggs on an industrial scale. Conveyor belts take the eggs directly to the packing area. From this farm in eastern France, they are taken across Europe.

more gems from pedro carolino's book:

The walls have hearsay

According to thy purse rule thy mouth

Big head, little sens

The wisdom of these last phrases is not obscured by the peculiarity of their expression. On the other hand, it takes a very wise head to tease the meaning out of:

Nothing some money, nothing of Swiss

He steep as a marmot

Take the moon with the teeth

Cat scalded fear the cold water

The Death Star (officially the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station) is a fictional moon-sized spacestation and superweapon appearing in the Star Wars movies and expanded universe. It is capable of destroying a planet with a single destructive energy beam. (wikipedia)

Shawcross closed by plugging a big initiative of the Obama administration: science, technology, engineering and math education:

If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Sorry, "Star Wars" fans, it seems the gravitational pull of Washington's budget battles was too much to make a $852 quadrillion investment.

Shawcross did take the opportunity to explain what is being done already, instead of the government spending the estimated $852 quadrillion (in case you were wondering what the above number was) to build the ultimate planet-destroying machine.

There's the International Space Station (which doesn't destroy planets). There's the two rovers on Mars ("one wielding a laser"). Oh yeah, here's the president wielding a light saber! Who knew -- the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is even "supporting research" on building Luke Skywalker's arm.

Here's why, according to Paul Shawcross, chief of the Science and Space Branch of the Office of Management and Budget, who wrote an epic response to the petition and its nearly 35,000 signatories:

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?
