♥ Human beings are funny.
They long to be with the person they love but refuse to admit openly.
Some are afraid to show even the slightest sign of affection because of fear.

Fear that their feelings may not be recognized, or even worst, returned.

But one thing about human beings puzzles me the most,
is their conscious effort to be connected with the object
of their affection even if it kills them slowly within.♥

Reading 1

Heb 4:12-16

The word of God is living and effective,
sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating even between soul and spirit,
joints and marrow,
and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
No creature is concealed from him,
but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him
to whom we must render an account.

Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God,
let us hold fast to our confession.
For we do not have a high priest
who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
but one who has similarly been tested in every way,
yet without sin.
So let us confidently approach the throne of grace
to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.

Mk 2:13-17
Gospel

Jesus went out along the sea.
All the crowd came to him and he taught them.
As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus,
sitting at the customs post.
Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed Jesus.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples;
for there were many who followed him.
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners
and tax collectors and said to his disciples,
“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus heard this and said to them,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

There are certain things that need to be
pointed out for this question.

Most people see intelligence as the amount
of information compiled in the human mind.
The knowledge gain over a certain amount
of time or just the stored information
about anything we can learn about.
This is all true but there is a
difference between intelligence and wisdom.
Intelligence usually implies a "flawless"
execution of something but on the other
hand, wisdom is intelligence gained by
making mistakes.
"They are wise beyond their years" is
a famous phrase that we are all familiar
with. This phrase usually indicates that
a younger person is intelligent enough
to know not to make certain mistakes so
wisdom is intelligence in personal
experience. While intelligence is
the knowledged learned without making
a mistake, wisdom is knowledged learned
by making mistakes. Another definition
of wisdom is intelligence that is used.
There can be alot of smart people out
there but if they don't use their
intelligence then they are not wise...

The butterfly is a common subject in many Philippine folk dances where the beautiful spread wings is a metaphor of many equally beautiful things like good looks, a delicate kandungga (big triangular scarf) decoration, a blossoming flower, a colorful woman's shawl or a dressed-to-kill woman going to church.

The "Ohoy! Alibangbang" from Negros and "Ining Alibangbang" from Sorsogon are song dances similar to the "Ay, ay Alibangbang!" and "Alibangbang Pula" both from Eastern Samar .

Handsome butterflies may also go courting from flower to flower as in the "Mariposa" of Pangasinan or the "Kuykuyappo" among the Isinay people of Dupax del Sur, Nueva Vizcaya.

Among the Christianized Gaddang and the Yogad people of Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya, the "Balamban" either mimics butterflies or a flying fish.

One of the Christianized pre-Hispanic dances of the lowland Visayan people is this "Ohoy Alibangbang". There are many pre-Hispanic dances throughout the archipelago which mimics animals, plants and even insects. Alibangbang could be translated in the Filipino language as butterfly or dragonfly.

It has been said that taxonomy is dead, and yet there is much about biological systematics that is simply taken for granted. The present regime in biological taxonomy (at least for more complex forms of life) is to arrange living creatures in accordance with the best information available regarding their natural history (the so-called “tree of life”). Typically this constitutes some traditional comparative anatomy, but with increasing deference to biochemical analyses, and in particular the results DNA hybridization experiments. The assumption underlying this approach is that affinities between biological organisms are best adjudicated and understood according to the degree of relatedness, or the most recent common ancestral organism (either postulated or discovered). Rather than working to corroborate evolutionary theory, contemporary taxonomy exists largely to prop it up as though natural history was an end in itself.

Natural history is one very revealing perspective on the organization of life; where you come from says a lot about where you presently are. However it is a retrospective view of life and historical relationships sometimes distort present relationships and the relative significance of the two. To cite an avian example, there is something odd about associating flamingos and grebes together (Hackett SJ et al. 2008. A Phylogenomic Study of Birds Reveals Their Evolutionary History. Science 320: 1763-1768) more closely than, say, grebes and other swimming/diving birds.

An alternative taxonomy (in some ways the more traditional taxonomy) might promote present ecological similarities between organisms and minimize genealogical relationships. Such would be a progressive taxonomy with ecology as its organizing principle. This approach would have certain advantages over the current status quo, for instance it would be more intuitive, and would focus more on current affinities, rather than historical ones.

Decisions regarding taxonomy, and the organizational principles behind them, depend largely on convention which in turn depend on our biases and predilections or (perhaps more optimistically) the values and objectives behind our inquiry. It is worth reflecting on these things from time to time.

Arrogance is a universal sin. If there are 1 million Americans that you met in your life and you found them to be arrogant, that won't do justice to 299 million Americans who may not be arrogant.

What is true to one may not be true to all. What is true to many may not be true to one.

Bohol has a population of 1.2 million. Let's say another 1 million Boholanos are living here and abroad. That would bring to a total of 2.2 million Boholanos.

If you met 1 or 2 Boholanos who are arrogant, is it fair to say that the 2,199,999 Boholanos are arrogant too?

We can increase the probability. Let's say you met 1,000 Boholanos who displayed arrogance, will it make the 2,199,000 Boholanos equally arrogant?

What if the 1,000 Boholanos you met showed arrogance only on that particular day (the fact of imperfection) but in their true nature they are humble 99% of the time, can we say that they are arrogant?

When you go to a doctor who tells you that you don't have cancer because the tissue tested showed no cancer cell, will you believe the doctor? What if the rest of the tissues that were not tested actually have cancer cells?

False assumption is dangerous.

Unfounded generalization can cause divisions.

Even if I meet 100,000 Ilonggos who are tikalon (arrogant/boastful), it would be unjustified for me to say that Ilonggos are tikalon because the 100,000 do not represent the millions of Ilonggos.

And if millions of Ilonggos are truly arrogant, it is still unfair and unjustified and it is foolishness to say that Ilonggos are tikalon if there are 100,000 Ilonggos who are not arrogant.

The existence of one does not prove the existence of many, and the existence of many does not prove the existence of one.

Well said, Michael.

You said it all.

Question and Answer / Why do particles come in three?
January 15, 2011, 08:43:16 AM
The elektron has two bigger brothers, the muon and the tau particle. They are considerably heavier and if we interpret it as a particle system, the muon and tau are an elektron with considerably more energy put into that system.

So if it's a matter of energy, we could add more, presumably, and get even heavier particles. But this doesn't seem possible.

Apparently, from the speed of collapse from boson particles people have inferred that three is the maximum.

Why three? Why not four or six?

Why do we have these particles in the first place? What is there function? They quickly collapse in their lightest versions, which seems to make up the world as we see it around us. So without taus and muons the world would still look like we see it today.

Inspiration & Hope / Proof of Immortality
January 15, 2011, 08:30:49 AM
1. To exist, something must be experiencable.

2. To experience, one must exist.

3. By definition, not existing requires that you do not experience (follows from axiom 2).

4. It is impossible to experience not existing (or nothing), since not existing requires that you do not experience (see axiom 1).

Since we cannot not exist, we are immortal.

My question is does einstein's relativity cause problems for eternalism? In particular do lorentz transformations and simultaneity make it impossible to have a simple 4d block that represents space and time?

With relativity each frame of reference sees a slightly different 4d block as their history. So to have the 4d block universe that eternalism requires it would mean somehow overlaying those 4d blocks in a messy pile which seems like it just wouldn't work.

I don't have experience with lorentz transformations apart from some light reading about them. But I seem to recall the observers see the universe at a different 'angle'. In other words the transformation equation just warps the universe at a slightly different angle depending on the observers speed.

If that's the case it gives me hope that eternalism could still use a 4d block with a "god's frame of reference" and the other frames of reference could be explained by a fairly simple shift in the 'angle' the observer uses as their timeslice.

What's your view on this?

True Story:

When I arrived to the Philippines this Summer (July) 2010, i switched from the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal. When I arrived to the domestic terminal, the man who did the baggage inspection looked at my bags and saw that its destination was "Tagbilaran City, BOHOL".

He immediately looked at me, and said (with a rather colloquially Bol-anon accent) : "Oy Sir! Ka ingon man ko Pinoy nga gikan sa Saudi. Fil Am diay ka sir?"

I responded, (of course in BOL-ANON): "oo bai, ning balik sa atong yuta na tawhan."

Sure man ko mas tiguawang pa ka nako." lol

Ning katawa kami duha. As in loud jyud kaayo.

Reply pood sija (ijang ngalan kai Hector), ning hisgut sija nako, "Taga asa man diay ka sa Bohol, bai?"

Ako, "Taga VALENCIA, brod. ikaw?"

Ning katawa sija napood.

"Ay kulirat! Jawa-a kai duol ra man diay ta, bai! Taga Dimiao baja ko!"

We parted with a firm handshake.

He had a bright smile.

Aging , The Natural Process. A Psychoanalytic Point of View

Psychiatry Medical Report

by: A. Lorenzo Lucino Jr, Medical Intern

Aging is a natural process of life and we all age from the day we were born to the day that we die, the body continues in this natural progression of life, which translates in changes in the physiological body as well as human psychology and function. When one regards the phenomenon that is aging, one has to take into consideration the negative and positive factors, in this case, healthy aging and unhealthy aging. Healthy aging refers to the positive factors that an individual goes through throughout retirement, and the positives in aging. This may include the practices of eating healthy, exercising actively, maintaining social relationships and a support group while one ages. Unhealthy aging is the antithesis of healthy aging, this term may regard to the negative aspects of aging attributed to bad health practices of an individual such as smoking, drinking, a lack of support group as one ages (Growing Old In A New Age, 1993).

One has to take into consideration the natural processes of career development and how these processes plays a role in retirement, the psychological effects of people in retiring age. This is best observed in Donald Super’s Five Stages of Career Development; his career stages included the Growth stage, Exploration stage, Establishment stage, Maintenance stage and the Disengagement stage (Bjorklund and Bee, 2008). In regards to retirement , it is rather interesting that there is such a stark contrast in the male and female work schedule. Bjorklund and Bee mentions that more men work full time than women , importantly, more men maintain a constant work schedule as compared to women, who have to worry about taking maternity leave, sick leave as compared to men. Women are also more willing to work part time jobs than men, as well as the fact that women are more inclined to move in and out of full time jobs more frequently than men (Bjorklund and Bee, 2008). Despite the fact that more and more women are taking more active roles and positions in the work force, it is rather interesting to note that men are still being paid higher wages than women for doing the same work. This affects the notion of retirement and the prospect of retirement in that due to this stark difference in work schedules and contributions, could result in differences in social security payment for men and women.

Retirement and the prospect of retirement is rather dependent on social security , which was established some 60 years ago during the post-Great Depression Years, and because of this institutionalized system, could allow some sort of reprieve for workers. It is also important to note that job satisfaction, work and personal life affects the choice in retiring from a particular profession. If a professional enjoys his profession and receives not only economic rewards, but also emotional, social and physical rewards from the job, he or she is less likely to retire from the profession when he or she is reaching retiring age, but would rather choose to work part time. As compared to an individual who had less interest in the work place and would probably take the option or retiring early (Bjorklund and Bee, 2008).

One also has to take into consideration how marriage and family life affects work and the prospect of work. It is evidenced that married men will earn a higher income as compared to unmarried men, likewise, married men are absent from work less than unmarried men (Bjorklund and Bee, 2008). Elizabeth Gorman notes that married men and women are usually more interested and focused on the prospects of a job than single men and women (Bjorklund and Bee, 2008). One can argue that due to the fiscal responsibilities of married couples, which might include paying off a mortgage loan, ensuring that their children finish college and find a stable profession etc. All of these said fiscal responsibilities and duties might play a significant role in a couple’s decision to retire from a job, or even delay retirement definitely. One has to understand that retirement will have particular effects, including a change in income, change in insurance coverage, and thus could play a role in the decision to retire or delaying retirement for some time. A couple who is in the retirement age, have no children, paid off their financial responsibilities would be more willing to retire than say a couple in retiring age that still had children in college, still paying for mortgage and other secondary expenses.

In regards to Bjorlund and Bee’s teaching on the effects of retirement and the notion of the feminization of poverty. However, it must say that I do agree that retirement is more possible in this epoch because of the presence of social security, retirement benefits, pensions, as well as assets that are available as compared to say some 70 years ago when an individual was expected to work till he or she died.

The Winner Takes It All l   ;D (by ABBA)

I don't wanna talk
About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history

I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny

I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence

Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules

The Gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear

The winner takes it all
(Takes it all)
The loser has to fall
(Has to fall)
It's simple and it's plain
(Yes, it's plain)
Why should I complain

you like ABBA, diay, ma'am States?

or perhaps, perhaps we can take it into a marital context.

a scenario:

two men court a beautiful woman. one man from bohol and the other from negros; they both are in love with a woman from Samar.
The man from bohol was poor , while the man from negros was a haciendero, and was successful in wooing the Samarena.

The two (the man from negros and the samarena) get married. so 'technically' the negrosense is the 'winner'.
And the poor boholano is the 'looser'.

However. there is a twist. ;)
(a life without a twist, wouldn't be life... lol)

The samarena turns out to be a horrible wife. a witch who is jealous and possessive. driving her husband crazy.

The Boholano (the looser) ended up meeting a beautiful ilongga whom adored him. they both get married and live a good life in Iloilo City.

So in this scenario, the 'looser' lucked out.

o diba?

:)

an accountant who places # 1 on the accountancy boards vs an accountant student who failed the accountancy boards.

the board top notcher: studied , exhausted the theory material thoroughly and regurgitated the material proficiently (or he was a natural genius with amazing photographic memory)

the accountant who failed: did not study enough, had sub par study habits, did not have the drive, was ill prepared.

point: the looser was 'worse' than the winner.

example lang ha.

Mao nay giingon: try and try until you succeed. The main ingredient of success is a cornucopia of failures. :)

hehehe. oh my! this sounds just like Freud's theory of a 'successful psychoanalytic psychotherapy': "regress, regress until you find the root!"

;)

bravo.
#25773
not necessarily so. the outcome simply means that the 'winner' was able to outperform the 'loser' in this particular scenario.

since the 'winner' outperformed the 'loser', it means that he/ she was better in performing than the 'loser'.

'winning' is the effect of constant practice, study, repetition, review. proficiency, and accuracy usually results in a win.

so, for a winner to be 'worse than the loser' makes absolutely no sense. that would be the antithesis of a winner.

Nganong nacriticize ang pagpalit ni Noynoy ug luxury car? Kay may EO man sijang gipirmahan nga nagpugong o nagdili sa mga government officials nga mopalit ug luxury vehicle. Mao na sija. Pero okay ra man ijahang pagpalit kay porceeds ra man pud to sa ijahang BMW. ;D

well said, vince. some local politicians use public funds to purchase 'transportation vehicles' when they are elected. it is understood of they purchase an isuzu, hyundai, mitsubishi, toyota, honda, ford etc. but a provincial governor using public funds to buy a Mercedes Benz S-500 (worth over $80,000)...then that's just absurd. However, if that said governor is going to use his own funds (private, not public, of course we're hoping he's not getting these funds via pork barreling) then that's one thing.

Aquino is using his own funds to purchase this vehicle. Not public. So what's the big deal? Ang rason kay naa'y ubang mga politka nga nag ibog. gusto sila mo palit pood pero dili ka afford kai they have "beer pockets yet have expensive wine tastes".

Ug dili ka maka afford, ajaw palit. Pero ug naa kay daghang kuwarta ug maka palit ka unsay gusto nimo, then palit! so long as it is in your budget.

as for the rest, ajaw na lang mo ma ibog. kai dili maayo. puydi mo tanaw, ajaw na lang pag yawyaw.

I believe that within a decade, Ubay will be recognized as a city. Let's hope for the best.

Let me also state that Ubay is larger than the capital city of Guimaras Island Province, Jordan City. Ubay is also larger (twice the size, actually) than Romblon City, the capital of Romblon Province.

Some people just have nothing else to do but nit pick on little things like buying a beautiful luxury car.

Just let our President be.  He already lost Shalani. His attempts to strike up new relationships (that fashionista and then a lady stock broker) doesn't seem to go anywhere. If having a Porsche will help him in his private moments, we should understand that a man has got to do what a man has got to do.

For sure, well said.

If you want a wider and more international perspective, CNN.

If you want depth of discussion of issues, Fox News. But majority of the topics discussed deals on domestic US issues. Nonetheless, most of my favorite talkshow hosts are on Fox, i.e., Bill O'reily, Glen Beck and Huckabee.

Glen Beck is interesting, he raises issues that are quite 'volatile'.
