The word moron is the most recent of the three and it originates in the U.S.A. around the turn of the century. Of the three moron would be the most competent, with the intelligence of a child between the age of eight and twelve. The word imbecile is older and formed from Latin I think, this denotes a person of limited intelligence but having the ability to function in small tasks, preferably supervised, at a child's level say three to eight. The word idiot would denote the least intelligent of the three, an idiot functioning below a three year old childs capacity. These terms are obsolete and frankly offensive, even if applied correctly to individuals of limited intelligence. The ranking of the intelligent quotient is subjective as each day may bring different results but for this purpose it could be ranked at 80 for the moron, perhaps 55 for the imbecile, and the idiot would unlikely be able to score 30. -- drampor, http://answers.yahoo.com/

Where else can you find a land as beautiful as its people, a people as warm as its climate?

Where else can you find a nation as rich as its history, a culture as colorful as her transport (vintas and jeepneys)?

Where else can you find a workforce as talented as her artists, an economy as vibrant as her freedoms?

Where else can you find dining as delightful as her shopping, fairways as tranquil as her spas?

Where else can you find fruits as delicious as her hillsides (Bohol Chocolate Hills), a nightlife as breathtaking as her sunset?

Finally, where else can you find a people with pride in her past, a passion for her present, and faith in her future?

All these and more . . .

Each time you come across a good idea, take a few moments to share it with someone (or in TUBAGBOHOL.com), either at home or at work.

The concentration you require to explain new principle in your own words to another person seems to drive the information deeper into your subconscious mind where it becomes a permanent part of your long-term memory. - excerpt from Brian Tracy's book Time Power

It's believed that gradual soil erosion eventually caused Heracleion to fall into the Mediterranean. “It is now clear that a slow movement of subsidence of the soil affected this part of the south-eastern basin of the Mediterranean,” Goddio writes on his site. “The rise in sea levelâ€"already observed in antiquityâ€"also contributed significantly to the submergence of the land.”

The Telegraph reports that researchers are beginning to more fully understand what daily life was like in the city, also called “Thonis.” Mainly, they describe it as having served as the main hub for sea traffic entering the region, including all trade from Greece.

“We are getting a rich picture of things like the trade that was going on there and the nature of the maritime economy in the Egyptian late period,” Damian Robinson, director of the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Oxford, told the Telegraph. Robinson is part of the team that has been busy uncovering artifacts from Heracleion's sunken remains.

“It was the major international trading port for Egypt at this time,” Robinson added. “It is where taxation was taken on import and export duties. All of this was run by the main temple.”

A giant statue recovered from the ancient city Heracleion. (Reuters)

Until a decade ago, no one knew if Heracleion, believed to be an ancient harbor city, was fiction or real. Now, reports the Telegraph, the researchers who found itâ€"150 feet beneath the surface of Egypt's Bay of Aboukirâ€"are sharing some of the amazing historical artifacts preserved there.

The finds include 64 ships, 16-foot-tall statues, 700 anchors and countless gold coins and smaller artifacts.

According to underwater archeologist Franck Goddio, credited with having discovered the site, the city was probably built sometime around the 8th century B.C., which makes it older than the famed city of Alexandria. Over the years, it fell victim to a number of natural disasters before being swallowed by the sea, probably around A.D. 700.

“We are just at the beginning of our research,” said Goddio. “We will probably have to continue working for the next 200 years for [it] to be fully revealed and understood.”

The Philippines' growth amid a global slowdown has been attracting investors, CNN Money quoted Ashraf Laidi, chief global strategist at City Index in London, as saying.

"The economy doesn't depend on exports to China like many other countries in the region," Laid said further. "It's more tied to domestic consumption."

Malacanang has earlier welcomed the stock market's record performance as a "manifestation of continued confidence" in the Philippine economy.

"This is but one among many indicators of a resurgent Philippines," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.

The economy also earned its first investment grade in history from global debt watcher Fitch Ratings late March.

AFP News - Traders work at the Philippine Stock Exchange in Manila. Asian markets mostly fell as fears about Spain's surging borrowing costs replaced the previous day's optimism over Greece's election, while G20 leaders struggled to soothe dealers' nerves.

The Philippine stock market is one of the "hottest" in the world so far this year, a CNN report said.

The local bourse was ranked as the fifth top-performing stock market globally, with CNN Money noting growth of 20 percent as of April 24.

The Philippine stock market was topped only by the of Kuwait, which grew by 23 percent; Argentina, 27 percent; United Arab Emirates, 28 percent; and Japan, 34 percent.

The cuts were "very tentative, hesitant," Owsley said. "This is not someone who's skilled in terms of kitchen work or butchery, and yet they know, out of sheer need, that this is what they have to do."

The brain, tongue, cheeks and leg muscles appear to have been eaten, with the brain probably consumed first because it decomposes soon after death, the Smithsonian said in an online announcement.

Scholars have speculated that extreme drought, hostile relations with the local Powhatan Confederacy and a lost supply ship made the Jamestown colonists desperate enough to eat humans. Writings had suggested it, but no hard physical evidence existed until now.

William Kelso, lead archeologist on the project, and his team discovered the girl's remains last summer.

"We found a deposit of refuse that contained butchered horse and dog bones," Kelso said. "That was only done in times of extreme hunger. As we excavated, we found human teeth and then a partial human skull."

After her death, in a year when many Jamestown colonists starved, Jane's body was hacked apart by a butcher or butchers who barely knew what they were doing. She may have been chosen because others in her household were already dead and there was no one to bury her, Owsley said.

UNSKILLED CHOPPING

"There was very clear post-mortem dismemberment that involved chops to the forehead, chops to the back of the head that cracked the skull open," the scientist said.

"A puncture to the left side of the head was used to essentially lever and open the ... head to remove the brain. There are cuts all over the face and on the mandible, inside as well as out."

By 1609, Owsley said, the settlement was effectively operating under siege, with many of the male colonists killed by hostile Native Americans after venturing out.

Those who remained inside Jamestown's confines were often women, children and the sick. Those who dismembered Jane might well have been women, he said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Settlers at Virginia's Jamestown Colony resorted to cannibalism to survive the harsh winter of 1609, dismembering and consuming a 14-year-old English girl, the U.S. Smithsonian Institution reported on Wednesday.

This is the first direct evidence of cannibalism at Jamestown, the oldest permanent English colony in the Americas, according to the Washington-based museum and research complex.

A recent excavation at the historic site revealed not just the remains of dogs, cats and horses eaten by settlers during the cold "Starving Time" of that year, but also the bones of a girl known to researchers simply as "Jane."

Jane probably was part of a relatively prosperous household, possibly a gentleman's daughter or maidservant, said Smithsonian forensic anthropologist Douglas Owsley, who analyzed her bones after they were found by Preservation Virginia, a private nonprofit group.

Her back molars had not yet erupted, putting her age around 14 years, and there was a lot of nitrogen in her bones, indicating she ate a meat-rich English diet, Owsley said in a telephone interview.

It is not known whether Jane was killed or died of natural causes. The Smithsonian said there is no evidence of murder.

Benefits of law

But even without the law, there are employers like Carballo who make sure helpers are treated well. Sacare said that Carballo pays for her fare when she asks for a leave to go home. She also get days off from housekeeping and babysitting.

Sacare’s 22-year-old sister, however, is not as lucky with her employer of four years, who has refused to give SSS benefits, 13th month pay and even refuses to cover expenses when she falls ill.

“Magpagamot siya, sarili niyang pera (If she needs medical treatment, she has to spend her own money),” she said, remembering the time her sister got sick with dengue.

Sacare said that at times, it’s really up to the employer.

The good thing about the Kasambahay law is that it “provides grounds to protect” both the employer and the employee, Masamloc said.

She also suggested that the government should hold massive awareness campaigns and encourage domestic workers to join associations where they can be better informed of their rights.
#25347
Masamloc, who was once a helper when she was 13, said what’s good about the law is that it recognizes that “domestic work is work and domestic workers are workers. “

“The state gives recognition to the contribution of domestic workers to the engine of the economy,” she added.

The law also pegs their minimum wage at the same rate as other workers, and entitles them to the same benefits.

In the law, a kasambahay’s minimum monthly wage ranges from P1,500 in provinces to P2,500 in cities. It may even go as high as P5,000 depending on the person’s training and experience. The law also requires employers to give out contracts.

Basic paperwork

Lilibeth Masamloc, an advocate for the rights of domestic workers, said domestic workers like Sacare who do not have the proper papers can still apply for late registration with the nearest Local Civil Registry Office.

“Before hiring them, advise them to secure their Birth certificate. Actually during the SSS orientation, if the domestic worker doesn't have a birth certificate, she can bring along with her other pertinent documents,” she advised.

To avail of Philhealth coverage, Masamloc said baptismal certificates could be used in place of birth certificates.
All this would be new for domestic workers like Sacare, who’s been employed only through referrals.

Gigi Sacare has been working as a house helper for 35 year with no benefits. Photo by …“Wala namang nagtatanong na amo (No employer has ever asked for documents),” she said.
#25349
"Ngayon ko lang naisipan na gusto kong [mag-SSS]. Noon, hindi ko pa alam yun. (It was only recently that I have thought of availing benefits from the Social Security System. I never knew about it)," Sacare said.

It was Angelica Carballo, her employer since 2011, who told Sacare about the new law, which requires employers to have their helpers avail of social welfare benefits like the SSS and Philhealth, the national health insurance program.

Without the proper documents, however, Sacare might have to wait a little longer. Sacare doesn’t have a birth certificate registered with the National Statistics Office, a requirement in processing transactions with the government.

By Vince Nonato, VERA Files | The Inbox â€" 21 hours ago

She’s been housekeeper for 23 years, but for the first time this year Gigi Sacare might just be receiving benefits on top of her pay.

Sacare, 35, migrated from Davao to Metro Manila and has been working as a domestic helper since she was 12. Today, May 1, she and thousands of other house helpers will be celebrating their first Labor Day as official members of the country’s workforce.

The recent passage of Republic Act No. 10361, also called Batas Kasambahay or the Domestic Workers Act, has given Sacare and many others the chance to assert their right to better welfare and treatment. The law was signed in January, while its implementing rules and regulations were approved on April 25, expected to be released on May 10.

But even with a law, it may take some time before helpers can enjoy the full benefits as most of them do not have papers, even as basic as a birth certificate. In most cases, employers usually do not ask for proper documentation and do not give out contracts, exposing helpers to maltreatment and abuse.

Katherine Luzuriaga, who was born to a Filipino father, was among the three female doctors acknowledged for the first "functional cure" in an HIV-infected baby.

Luzuriaga, a professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, headed laboratory investigators on the discovery.

The International Astronomical Union has traditionally approved official names for celestial bodies. So far, the organization has not moved to change the planet-naming status quo, in which alien worlds take the name of their host star along with a lowercase letter. The first planet discovered in a particular system is designated "b" (since the star is implicitly "a"), the second "c" and so on.

Astronomers first confirmed an alien planet orbiting a sunlike star in 1995. Since then, they've discovered more than 700 exoplanets (or more than 800, depending on whose tally is consulted), with thousands more awaiting confirmation by follow-up observations.

For more information on the Adopt-a-Planet campaign, visit Uwingu's website here: http://www.uwingu.com/a-public-name-for-bb/#.UUmNKBxQGSp.
#25359
Nominating a name costs $4.99, and voting will set you back 99 cents. Uwingu (whose name means "sky" in Swahili) will use the money raised by Adopt-a-Planet to fund grants in space exploration, research and education, which is the company's main purpose, Stern added.

Uwingu also sees the campaign as a fun way to get people more interested and involved in science.

"We're engaging the public with the sky and astronomy in a way that's never been possible before," Stern said.

The names people propose for Adopt-a-Planet won't become the alien worlds' "official" astronomical names, Uwingu officials say. Rather, they'll be common monikers, much like "The Milky Way" or "The Whirlpool Galaxy."
#25360
Any moniker that receives at least 1,000 votes earns its nominator the chance to "adopt" (and name) the exoplanet of his or her choice. Such winners will also receive an adoption certificate, links to detailed information about the adopted planet and $100 in Uwingu store credits, company officials said. [The Strangest Alien Planets (Gallery)]

Adopt-a-Planet is similar to a month-long contest Uwingu staged recently to give a people's-choice name to Alpha Centauri Bb, the closest known exoplanet to Earth at just 4.3 light-years away. (The winner: Albertus Alauda.)

The new adoption effort, however, is open-ended and seeks names for many different alien worlds.

"We're happy to have winner after winner after winner," Uwingu CEO Alan Stern, a former NASA science chief who also heads the agency's New Horizons mission to Pluto, told SPACE.com. "There are plenty of exoplanets out there."

A new campaign aims to start giving popular names to the hundreds of alien planets that have been discovered around the Milky Way galaxy.

The space-funding company Uwingu announced this "Adopt-a-Planet" effort today (May 1), asking the public to propose and vote on names for the many and varied worlds now known beyond our solar system.

Science and Research / Aliens: Where are they?
May 02, 2013, 06:55:05 AM
Within our narrow (but, in all likelihood, accurate) idea of what kind of planets can sustain life and using our verdant technology, we have already discovered a few star systems with one or two planets that fulfill our criteria. The bad news is that there is a rather long stretch between being able to sustain life and being able to sustain advanced, intelligent civilizations, and there is little reason to believe that one of the rather few habitable planets that we’ve identified actually harbors intelligent life. The good news is that we’ve explored such an insignificant corner of the universe for life that the mere fact that there are habitable planets within earshot means the probability of there being life somewhere out there is excitingly high.

Again, the bad news is that physical constraints prevent us from getting to such faraway places within any reasonable time-frame. Faster-than-light travel is not as yet understood to be possible, unless we are able to meddle with the very fabric of space-time. Even then, if the Big Rip hypothesis turns out to be true, every second that passes makes intergalactic travel more and more implausible.

But supposing we are one day able to distort space-time to travel to faraway places, where should we look? It’s not just planets at a certain distance from their stars that we should look for. The size of the star, its luminosity, its dark spots, the way the planet revolves around the star (e.g., tidal lock), the atmospheric components of the planet, the planet’s rotation and tilt, the size and distance of other planets orbiting around the same star (which could stabilize the habitable planet’s orbit and shield it from asteroids and comets), and even the shape and activity of the galaxy are all important factors to consider.

Regardless, we’re not flying out in search of aliens any time soon. If we are to see them in our lifetimes, it’s probably because they will come to us â€" not the other way around â€" but I don’t think we’ll see that very soon, either. Regardless, extraterrestrial life is a captivating subject, and I do hope that one day humans will greet creatures of another planet and establish a mutually beneficial relationship. The end of a life-sustaining universe is not an encouraging scenario to contemplate, so it would be nice to know we’re not the only ones concerned with preserving life forever. -- http://listverse.com/

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. --1 Peter 3:15

Facts and Trivia / Re: The Last Warning
May 02, 2013, 05:59:47 AM
The Last Warning (1929) is a mystery film directed by Paul Leni. It is a companion piece to Universal Pictures 1927 production of The Cat and the Canary. This was the last film directed by Leni before his death from blood poisoning in Los Angeles on September 2, 1929.

The Last Warning was re-made in 1939 by Joe May under the title The House of Fear.

Synopsis

Five years after a theater was closed following a murder of one of its actors during a performance, a producer decides to solve the mystery by again staging the play with the remaining cast. During the repeat performance another murder occurs. Eventually it is discovered that the murders were part a ploy devised by the stage manager to sabotage the production.

Hello Mr. Joey,

Well, ikaw rin ay dakila. Dakilang KIAT!

Karon you are involved sa tulo ka babaye.

Unsa man daw'y makuha nimo anang tagtulo ang uyab? Astig tingnan? Char sab! Pagpuyo na lang.

Yes, dakong gubot gyud kun mahibaw-an anang banang militar sa imong uyab nga minyo nga duna moy relasyon.

I-try daw nga maging faithful ka with your partner, for sure lisud lalo na og naanad sa daghang partners, pero think of the positive side sa imong buhaton.

Asa man ang mas pabor for you, ang pag-biga-biga na lang forever o ang magpuyo nga malinawon?

Being in a happy life mag-depende sa atong desisyon sa kinabuhi. Kita man ang magdala sa pag-aginod sa ligid sa atong kapalaran di man ubang tawo.

Why make your life complicated nga pwede man unta nga magmalinawon ang huna-huna kun pilion lang ang saktong dalan. Good luck!

Gini coefficient is commonly used as a measure of inequality of income or wealth. For OECD countries, in the late 2000s, considering the effect of taxes and transfer payments, the income Gini coefficient ranged between 0.24 to 0.49, with Slovenia the lowest and Chile the highest. The countries in Africa had the highest pre-tax Gini coefficients in 2008â€"2009, with South Africa the world's highest at 0.7. The global income inequality Gini coefficient in 2005, for all human beings taken together, has been estimated to be between 0.61 and 0.68 by various sources.

There are some issues in interpreting a Gini coefficient. The same value may result from many different distribution curves. The demographic structure should be taken into account. Countries with an aging population, or with a baby boom, experience an increasing pre-tax Gini coefficient even if real income distribution for working adults remain constant. Scholars have devised over a dozen variants of the Gini coefficient. --Wiki

The Gini coefficient (also known as the Gini index or Gini ratio) is a measure of statistical dispersion developed by the Italian statistician and sociologist Corrado Gini and published in his 1912 paper "Variability and Mutability".

The Gini coefficient measures the inequality among values of a frequency distribution (for example levels of income). A Gini coefficient of zero expresses perfect equality, where all values are the same (for example, where everyone has an exactly equal income). A Gini coefficient of one (100 on the percentile scale) expresses maximal inequality among values (for example where only one person has all the income). However, a value greater than one may occur if some persons have negative income or wealth. For larger groups, values close to or above 1 are very unlikely in practice however.

It has found application in the study of inequalities in disciplines as diverse as sociology, economics, health science, ecology, chemistry, engineering and agriculture.
