2. Gangnam Style
http://youtu.be/9bZkp7q19f0
Rarely does a song in a foreign language make such a stomp in the U.S., but Korean rapper Psy’s song became a hit of epic proportions, thanks in part to the video’s invisible-horse dance, which sparked thousands of copycats. Psy has said he was inspired by the flamboyant showmanship of Queen front man Freddie Mercury, and he’s been able to draw crowds just as large as those of the famed British band, amassing 80,000 people for a public concert in Seoul in October.

Gangnam Style quickly became the most liked video ever on YouTube and the most watched video on the site, topping Justin Bieber’s Baby. And in September, the 34-year-old K-pop singer signed with Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun.

1. Kony 2012
http://youtu.be/Y4MnpzG5Sqc
Kony 2012 is about a conflict in an African country that’s more than two decades old, spun into a documentary that’s 30 minutes long. It’s not exactly the typical formula for a viral video, but the film became the most viral video of all time, tallying more than 100 million views in its first six days online as Justin Bieber, Oprah and millions of others shared it. Through its rapid rise, Kony 2012 brought attention to the plight of Ugandans under the hands of guerrilla leader Joseph Kony, who has abducted more than 60,000 children and converted them into foot soldiers in his Lord’s Resistance Army.

But for all the horrors the film showed in a part of the world from which news is often scarce, some critics derided it for its self-congratulatory message. Invisible Children, the San Diegoâ€"based NGO that produced the film, faced criticism for its high overhead costs, and those outraged over the film took heat for being “slacktivists” about the conflict. But it’s undeniable that Kony 2012 set a new bar for all things viral.

4. Felix Baumgartner’s Space Jump
http://youtu.be/_bvrjnr7HZc
After more than two years of training and relentless delays, it seemed that Felix Baumgartner would never attempt the daredevil stunt: a free fall from 24 miles above Earth. As part of the Red Bull Stratos project, Baumgartner, an accomplished skydiver and BASE jumper of Austrian descent, was trained extensively to meet the scientific and physical risks of the dive. But it appeared that his greatest enemy was a strong breeze whipping through the New Mexico desert that would serve as his launching and landing pad. Yet on a quiet Sunday in October, the winds slowed and Baumgartner was cleared for launch, carried up to the stratosphere by a balloon. He was outfitted with a pressurized space suit to compensate for the dearth of oxygen, and inspiration and humility flowed forth as he teetered on the ledge of the capsule two dozen miles above the hard terrain. “Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you really are,” he said prior to the jump. And down he went, reaching a maximum speed of 834 m.p.h. and crushing the sound barrier.

3. Bullied Bus Monitor
http://youtu.be/sBhAxofUAZY
When a cell-phone clip of four teenagers bullying Karen Klein aboard a school bus went viral, it became the purest example of how the Internet can rally for what’s right. Reddit users created a fund to send the 68-year-old bus monitor on a vacation. They intended to raise $5,000, but the video of the cruelty Klein experienced while chaperoning the teens for Greece school district in upstate New York was so infuriating that donations poured in, eventually totaling more than $700,000. The school district disciplined the kids involved, removing them from the school, and Klein, a grandmother, has since started a foundation to combat bullying.

6. TV Anchor Stands Up to Bully
http://youtu.be/GdJ2jHii6Y0
As a news anchor in the small Wisconsin town of LaCross, Jennifer Livingston was used to being in the public eye and receiving feedback from viewers. But when one negative message hit a little too personally, she took it upon herself to deliver an on-air takedown of her bully. The viewer, later outed as a local lawyer, had said it was Livingston’s “community responsibility” to “promote a healthy lifestyle.” Livingston wasn’t concerned with the man’s critique of her weight â€" “Do you think I don’t know that?” she railed â€" but with the impact his comments could have on the area’s youth. “That man’s words mean nothing to me,” she said. “But this behavior is learned â€" it is passed down from people like the man who wrote me that e-mail.” Meanwhile, the empowerment she simply hoped to share with her viewers spread across the nation.

5. Dad Shoots Daughter’s Laptop
http://youtu.be/kl1ujzRidmU
What do you get when you cross a daughter with a penchant for Facebook and a father with a penchant for his gun? It’s a clip that seems straight out of a sitcom, but Tommy Jordan was dead serious when he pumped his daughter’s laptop full of bullets in February. But before that happened, Jordan was careful to explain to the camera why he was taking such an extreme step. As part of a seven-minute lead-in to the gun-vs.-laptop scene, he said his daughter Hannah had posted whiny messages on Facebook complaining about her household chores.

Skip to the last minute, and the talkie film turned into one of action: “That right there is your laptop,” he explains, turning the camera on the laptop, placed vulnerably in the grass. “This right here is my .45.” He then proceeded to unload his gun on the computer, sending shards of plastic flying around the yard. Something tells us he’s not buying her a new one.

8. Live Lip-Dub Marriage Proposal
http://youtu.be/5_v7QrIW0zY
Pack it up, gentlemen. There’s no way you can compete with this marriage proposal. Isaac Lamb, a Portland, Ore., actor, created one of the most elaborate ways imaginable to ask his girlfriend to marry him. It’s a stage performance that unfolds in real time, as his fiancée-to-be rides in the back of an open SUV. He enlisted the help of 60 family members and friends to lip-sync and dance along to Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” â€" a tightly choreographed effort that earned the praise of the crooner himself. And most important, it netted a yes from his girlfriend Amy. But really, how could she say no? We practically fell in love with Lamb just watching his performance.

7. Todd Akin’s ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comment
http://youtu.be/joxny3rco_4
During a political campaign in which women’s reproductive rights were constantly under fire, Senate candidate Todd Akin, a Republican from Missouri, offered up a shocking take on rape. Speaking on the political talk show The Jaco Report in August, Akin, commenting on abortion in cases of rape, said, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.”

It wasn’t until after the show aired on the local St. Louis Fox affiliate that his remarks made waves. Host Charles Jaco said he wished he had called Akin out during the taping. Akin later claimed that he “misspoke” during the interview and issued a statement explaining that he has “deep empathy” for rape victims. But it was too late. His comment scored wide-ranging denouncements from top Republicans, some of whom suggested the six-term Congressman consider ending his campaign, which he refused to do. But his bid for a Senate seat was indeed “shut down” by incumbent Claire McCaskill in the November election.

10. Cookie Monster’s Share It Maybe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qTIGg3I5y8#ws
The folks at Sesame Street, that PBS institution since 1969, often latch on to current memes, and they succeeded with adorable perfection in this clip as Cookie Monster injects new life into Carly Rae Jepsen’s earworm “Call Me Maybe” â€" perhaps the most overplayed song of the year. Whereas most “Call Me Maybe” parodies took the form of lip dubs, Cookie Monster rewrote the song, singing “But you’ve got cookie, so share it maybe.” And with a face like that, who could resist giving away a cookie or two?

9. Obama Sings Al Green
http://youtu.be/y6uHR90Sq6k
When the President carries a tune, no matter how abridged, the world listens. During a January fundraiser appearance at New York City’s Apollo Theater, President Obama paid tribute to legendary soul singer Al Green, who had performed earlier in the night. He sang a mere six words of Green’s 1971 single “Let’s Stay Together”: “I … I’m so in love with you,” the President belted, with slightly more hesitation than Green’s known for. But the verse was enough to thrill the crowd â€" and spike sales of Green’s version of the song by 490% that week. Fortunately, Obama’s well-received vocal exercise encouraged him to break out his pipes again when, during a blues concert at the White House in February, he proudly sang “Sweet Home Chicago,” the soulful anthem of his home city.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 81 kilometers (50 miles) west of Lata, at a depth of 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles).

Solomon Islands Police Commissioner John Lansley said local police patrols had reported that several people were presumed dead, though the reports were still being verified.

The CNN reported that at least five deaths were confirmed in Solomon Islands, said local hospital officials.

Four villages on Santa Cruz were impacted by the waves, with two facing severe damage, Lansley said. Other areas of the Solomons did not appear to have been seriously affected.

Tsunami off Solomon Islands damages homes, kills 5

Last Updated: Wednesday, February 06, 2013, 12:19

Hawaii: A powerful earthquake off the Solomon Islands generated a tsunami of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) that damaged dozens of homes and likely killed several people in the South Pacific island chain on Wednesday.

The strong 8.0 earthquake was followed by many aftershocks and two 1.5-meter (4 foot, 11-inch) waves that hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island prompting the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami warning for many countries including Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, but it was cancelled later.

The Tsunami watch issued for countries like New Zealand, Australia and eastern Indonesia was also withdrawn later on.

Small tsunami hits Solomons after major quake

SYDNEY | Wed Feb 6, 2013 8:52am IST

(Reuters) - A small tsunami hit the Solomon Islands on Wednesday after a major 8.0 magnitude undersea earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for several South Pacific island nations and placed many more nations including Australia and Indonesia on alert.

The quake struck at a very shallow depth of only five km (three miles) and was located 340 km (211 miles) east of Kira Kira in the Solomons, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said.

The center said a tsunami measuring 0.9 metres (three feet) hit the Solomons following the quake.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation cited a witness who said water was covering an airstrip in Lata, in Temotu province, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Philippines issues lowest-level tsunami alert, no evacuation

Reuters â€" 7 mins ago

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines issued a tsunami alert level 1, its lowest alert level, and warned residents along the country's eastern coast to stand-by for possible evacuation orders after a strong earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands on Wednesday.

"No evacuation yet, people should just be alert," Renato Solidum, head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, told Reuters.

"There are a lot of reasons [why] it's possible still to discover many of those objects, even working with small devices as we have," he says.

The team, which runs the La Sagra Observatory and its three 18-inch telecopes, were able to add the high-speed camera to one of them thanks to a grant from the Planetary Society in a program aimed at upgrading the hardware that hard-core amateur astronomers use to hunt for near-Earth objects.

While professional observatories dedicated to such searches bag the highest number of asteroids, perhaps as many as 100 amateurs worldwide conduct the follow-up observations needed to refine calculations of an object's orbit, figure out if an asteroid has a companion, and provide some initial characterizations of the type of asteroid the professionals discover, Betts says.

http://www.csmonitor.com/
#25149
"These small objects can appear at any moment," says Dr. Nomen, who notes that he has cut his once full-time dental practice down to two days a week to allow for more observing and more-rapid processing of the images the telescope takes.

Indeed, he and his team discovered another object much like 2012 DA14 on Feb. 4 and are awaiting confirmation of the siting from other observatories, he said in a briefing with reporters on Tuesday. Initial calculations of the object's orbit suggest it won't pass as close to Earth as 2012 DA14. Two days ago, calculations suggested that the object, estimated at 100 to 130 feet across, would make its closest approach to Earth some 72,000 miles beyond the moon.

Moonlit nights and bouts of cloudy weather slow the pace of discovery of objects in this size range.
#25150
By some estimates, the number of asteroids in the 20-meter (65.6 feet) to 200-meter (656 feet) size range could reach as high as 500,000.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 was discovered last year by a team of dedicated amateur astronomers operating a small observatory in the mountains of southern Spain. The effort highlights the role more-sophisticated amateurs can play in hunting for near-Earth objects, especially those that pose a threat to Earth.

Using a high-speed camera bolted to the back of an 18-inch telescope, the team, led by Jaime Nomen, a Barcelona dental surgeon, first detected the asteroid last February. The group is hunting for the smaller objects that are so faint that they don't appear until perhaps a week before closest approach.
#25151
Such an event wouldn't be a civilization buster, but it could put a world of hurt on a major metropolitan area, suggests Bruce Betts, director of projects for the Planetary Society in Pasadena, Calif.

In 1908, a similarly sized object plummeted through the atmosphere and burst above the Siberian forest near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River, some 480 miles northeast of Krasnoyarsk. The air-burst flattened an estimated 80 million trees in a blast zone that covered 830 square miles, comparable in size to Louisville, Ky., or San Diego, Calif.

"This would have leveled a city," says Dr. Betts.

Since astronomers began efforts dedicated to the search for near-Earth objects around 1995, some 9,668 have been discovered. Of those, 861 are more than half a mile wide, while 1,373 are considered potentially hazardous.
#25152
Asteroid specialists note that the object presents no threat to either Earth or satellites, although for the record, experts currently calculate a 1 in 7.5 million chance it could strike our planet in February 2110.

Next week's fly-by represents a record â€" the closest that a known object of this size has buzzed the planet, according to Paul Chodas and Don Yeomans, astronomers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory who study asteroids and the potential hazards they pose.

Objects in this size class come this close about once every 40 years, on average, and collide with Earth at an average rate of one every 1,200 years, they say.

Earth-buzzing asteroid: Big enough to level a city, it was found by amateurs

Asteroid 2012 DA14 will set a record when it zips by within 17,000 miles of Earth next week. The 150-foot object was discovered by a team of dedicated amateur astronomers in southern Spain.

By Pete Spotts, Staff writer

Diagram depicting the passage of asteroid 2012 DA14 through the Earth-moon system on Feb. 15, 2013.

The solar system is sending Earth a fleeting Valentine's greeting in the form of asteroid 2012 DA14, which makes a whisker-close (cosmically speaking) approach on Feb. 15.

The rocky asteroid, which measures roughly 150 feet across, is predicted to pass within 17,000 miles of Earth's surface, slipping below the 22,236-mile altitude where major weather and communications satellites operate, but well above low-Earth orbit, where the International Space Station and the vast majority of satellites hurtle around the planet.

Its close encounter with Earth is expected to shift its orbit enough to shave 51 days off of its current 368-day orbital period.

However, there are some things that cat people and dog people have in common. Both types of people talk to animals, consider themselves close to nature, dislike animal-print clothing, and are generally optimists.

The Hunch.com survey also found that both cat people and dog people are equally likely to have a four-year degree, but cat people are 17 percent more likely to have completed a graduate degree.

Check out some of the other findings from Hunch.com’s survey below.

Studies show that we tend to gravitate toward the animals with which we were raised, and factors like age and living space also play a role in pet ownership. Parents with young children are more inclined to have dogs that kids can take outside, while older people and singles are more likely to have lower-maintenance animals like cats. And people in the suburbs are more likely to adopt large dogs, while apartment dwellers are likely to have cats or small dogs.

Still, research shows that there are differences between cat people and dog people. A University of Texas study found that those who define themselves as dog people are more extroverted, agreeable and conscientious than self-proclaimed cat people. Those with a preference for felines, on the other hand, are more creative, adventurous and prone to neuroticism or anxiety.

Your pet might even indicate how you vote. A 2008 Gallup survey of 2,000 Americans found that 33 percent of dog owners identified themselves as Republicans, while only 28 percent of cat owners leaned to the right. But a Hunch.com poll of 200,000 pet owners found the split to be more even. According to its results, dog people are 50 percent more likely to be conservatives than cat people.

The truth about cat people and dog people

Research shows that your preference for felines or canines really does say something about your personality.

Are you a dog person or a cat person? It’s likely that you align yourself with one of these labels, and research shows that your preference for one animal or the other reveals a bit about your personality.

Sixty-two percent of U.S. households have a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association. Dogs are the most popular pets with 39 percent of U.S. households owning at least one canine, but cats come in second with 33 percent of U.S. households having at least one cat.

But can our choice of furry friend really say something about who we are? Sometimes.

King Richard III of England (1452-1485)

Richard III (2 October 1452 â€" 22 August 1485) was King of England for two years, from 1483 until his death in 1485 in the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His defeat at Bosworth Field, the decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, is sometimes regarded as the end of the Middle Ages in England. He is the subject of the play Richard III by William Shakespeare. (wikipedia)

Cranberries

These tart little fruits aren’t just for Thanksgiving anymore. The antioxidants in fresh cranberries have antimicrobial properties. That makes them ideal for fighting off and preventing infections additionally; incorporating more cranberries into your diet has been shown to reduce the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries and can even prevent the appearance and growth of certain cancers. Reduce some whole cranberries and diced granny smith apples in orange juice with the zest of a lemon for a chutney that goes perfectly over pork or chicken.

Greek Yogurt

Unlike regular yogurt, Greek yogurt has been strained and separated from the watery whey. The whole process reduces the amount of lactose and sugar in the yogurt, resulting in a thicker, more satisfying product that’s much higher in protein than its counterpart. That means a serving of Greek yogurt leaves you feeling fuller, longer. And a single serving of the deliciously creamy yogurt also contains more than a quarter of your daily calcium needs. Calcium-rich diets lead to much more weight loss than those that are dairy-free. Swap Greek yogurt for sour cream in your favorite recipes, or blend with frozen fruit and a splash of orange juice for an easy and fast smoothie.

Garlic

Sure, it’s murder on your breath, but garlic does wonders for your body. High levels of allicin, the antimicrobial and antibiotic naturally found in garlic, have been proven to lower blood pressure. Additionally, it’s been shown to stave off certain forms of cancer, lower your risk of heart disease, and reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. Try sautéing a couple of finely chopped cloves of garlic in some extra virgin olive oil with fresh chopped plum tomatoes, basil, red onions and Kalamata olives for a light and delicious pasta sauce.

Green Tea

There is no shortage of studies documenting the health benefits of catechins. These busy little antioxidants, found in high amounts in the leaves of tea plants, boost your metabolism and help burn more fat during workouts. A 200 6 study by the American Medical Association also showed that those drinking five to six cups of green tea a day over a seven year period were about 25% less likely to die (of any cause) than non-tea drinkers. Try swapping your morning latte for slightly sweetened green tea â€" hot or cold â€"for an AM pick-me-up that’s as good for your longevity as it is for your waistline.

Grapefruit

the many faces of grapefruit

Naringenin, the antioxidant that gives fresh grapefruit its distinctive tart and bitter flavors, has recently been proven to help your liver break down fatty acids. This is great news for everyone â€" especially diabetes sufferers, who take medication to assist with the fatty acid breakdown process. Get picky eaters to enjoy this ruby red superstar by sprinkling the top with a little sugar and putting them under the broiler for a couple of minutes. The high heat with caramelize the sugar and bring out the grapefruit’s sweeter notes.

According to a medical report, the soldiers use their rifles to repeatedly slap the left side of their chests â€" which stimulates hormones on that side of the body.  As a result, breasts start to grow only on their left side.

According to Medical Daily, only 211 people have been treated for the condition, 35 of whom belong to the Wachbataillon unit.
