SAM became the most famous koala in the world when firefighter David Tree stopped to give her a drink amid the devastation.

Pictures of Sam, who turned out to be female, travelled around the globe and featured in major newspapers including The New York Times, London's The Sun and on CNN.

The image provided a much-needed picture of hope in a week filled with news of despair. Yesterday Sam was recovering in Mountain Ash Wildlife Shelter.

CANBERRA  (Xinhua) -- Australian police said the death toll from Victoria's bushfires by Monday afternoon reached 131 and could top 200 as authorities sift through the piles of ash that were once entire communities.

The fires have now claimed 33 people in the small hamlet of Kinglake and nine in Kinglake West. Ten people have now been confirmed dead at nearby Marysville.

New deaths have been reported at Narbethong where eight people died and Yarra Glen which has one fatality. The toll for St Andrews has been revised down from 10 to six.

Authorities are being warned to expect a toll of 230, "The Australian" newspaper quoted sources inside state emergency meetings as saying.

Fires were still burning out of control and putting towns at risk in the Beechworth and Yackandandah regions in the state's northeast. Shortly after 4 p.m. (AEDT) a third town, Toolangai, was also put on alert.

All fire-devastated areas will be treated as crime scenes to determine if arson was involved, Victorian Police Commissioner Christine Nixon said, according to a report by Australian Associated Press.

The fires are Australia's worst natural disaster by far: worse than Ash Wednesday bushfire which killed 71 in 1983.

More than 750 houses have been destroyed and 330,000 hectares have been burnt.

There are 31 fires still raging throughout Victoria after record heat and wild winds set the state ablaze on Saturday.

Dynamite use eyed in dolphin stranding

The causes of the acoustic trauma could have been sound waves caused by dynamite fishing or sounds emitted by passing ships or seaquakes,” he said. But he said they had ruled out a seaquake as the cause.

Dr. Theresa Mundita Lim, director of the DENR’s Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB), said they found no lesions or other physical manifestations that the ears of the four dolphins that died had been injured.

“There were no injuries to their ears, like visible lesions, but the possibility of an acoustic problem or trauma is still there,” Lim said.

But she also said more tests, like analysis of tissue samples and MRI tests will have to be done to see if there were other injuries to the animals not visible externally. Lim also said they are sending tissue samples to the University of Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna for analysis.

She said dolphins usually venture into shallow waters to feed.

Joel Palma of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said dynamite fishing is usually done in shallow waters.

Philippine Provinces / 200 Dolphins Found in Shallow Sea
February 12, 2009, 02:38:36 AM

BALANGAâ€"Scores of fishermen and volunteers managed to guide more than 200 melon-headed dolphins into deep water after they beached themselves in Manila Bay, officials said yesterday.

Residents in the seaside towns of Orion, Pilar and Abucay on the Bataan peninsula raised the alarm early yesterday when they saw a large school of dolphins in shallow water.

Valentine's 2009 blog

Three of the dolphins were found dead and authorities feared others would die unless they could guide them into deeper water.

“This is an unusual phenomenon,” Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Director Malcolm Sarmiento said, estimating the number of dolphins at “more than 200.”

He said they could be reacting to a “heat wave or disturbance at sea,” such as a major underwater earthquake.

Dolphins, which are mammals, have ears that are sensitive to large changes in pressure underwater, he said.

“If their eardrums are damaged, they become disoriented and they float up to the surface,” he added.

He said smaller schools of dolphins numbering “in the 10s and 20s” had beached themselves elsewhere in the Philippines previously, but this was the first time so many had done so at the same time and place.

Authorities said they had managed to guide most of the dolphins back into deeper water.

Bataan Provincial Veterinarian Alberto Ventu-rina said samples had been taken from two of the dead dolphins, which had
shown they were both female and that one of them was pregnant.

He said he could not say why they beached them-selves although he noted that they both had water in their lungs, indicating that they had drowned. The pregnant dolphin had been found with its tail tangled in a fishing net, Venturina added.
“It’s possible that they got lost. They came from the north and were headed towards the South China Sea,” he said.

The two animals were identified as melon-headed dolphins, weighing about 250 to 300 kilograms, said Venturina.

MANILA, Philippines â€" (UPDATE) Two Filipino-Australian siblings were killed in the bush fires in Victoria, foreign affairs spokesman Bayani Mangibin said Tuesday.

"One is 22, the other is 24, but we don't know which is which," he said, quoting the report from the Philippine embassy in Canberra, which in turn got the report from honorary consul Raul Hernandez.

Earlier in the day, Mangibin said that the DFA has not received reports of any Filipino casualties.

The dead body of a 16-year old girl was found at a dumpsite in Iloilo City Tuesday afternoon.

The corpse of Jennifer Abiso was already in a state of decomposition when it was discovered at the Calajunan dumpsite in Arevalo district in Iloilo City.

Initial investigation by police revealed that the body sustained scratches in different parts of her body.

The family of the victim said they believe Jennifer was killed in a different place and was thrown at the dumpsite last Saturday.

Jennifer was reported last seen by his father, Agustin, last Saturday when she asked permission to go to a disco derby along with her friends.

Her friends told police authorities however that Jennifer went along with a group of men after leaving the disco derby.

The investigating team said it is now exploring the possibility that the victim was raped before she was killed. An autopsy is set to conducted to find out the real cause of the victim’s death.

Jennifer is the youngest of nine siblings and was reportedly a scavenger at the Calajunan dumpsite. With Jennifer Garcia, ABS-CBN Iloilo

Rihanna was planning on celebrating her 21st birthday on Feb. 20 with a big, splashy party in New York City.

However, I'm told her music label has, understandably, canceled the pricey soiree, which it had been putting together for about a month.

The bash for about 200 or so guests was to have had a carnival theme with various "sideshow" attractions, says a source familiar with the planning.

Although organizers were having difficulty securing sponsors for the party because of the economy, my source says Cîroc vodka had already or was about to sign on as the leading sponsor.

"They were talking about it being at Gotham Hall, but I don't think it was definite just yet," the source says.

Our prayers go out to Rihanna, and hopefully, she'll get the chance to celebrate her big day at a later date.

Showbiz & Celebrity / Rihanna's Injuries -- "Horrific
February 11, 2009, 08:19:02 PM
Law enforcement sources have now gotten specific with us... police took pictures of Rihanna's injuries and they are "horrific."

As we reported, the photos show major contusions on both sides of the singer's face -- there is serious swelling and bruising. Her lip is split and her nose bloody. We have now confirmed there are bite marks on one of her arms and on several fingers.

And we now know this... Rihanna claims Brown struck her with his fists and that's what did the damage. There was no object used in the alleged attack.

Rihanna refused treatment at the scene, but before she left cops took photos. We're told the photos alone are "devastating proof of abuse."

And we've learned it was not Rihanna who called 911. Someone in the area heard her screams and called.

Jeremy Lusk, a Freestyle motocross star and 2008 X Games gold medalist, died Tuesday from head injuries sustained riding in an event in Costa Rica. He was 24.

Lusk was injured Saturday when he failed to complete a full rotation while attempting a Hart Attack backflip on his bike and slammed headfirst into the dirt. He underwent surgery to relieve swelling on his brain, but his condition worsened Monday.

Lusk crashed in almost identical fashion in the freestyle semifinals at the 2007 X Games but was unhurt. Last March, while preparing for the Moto X World Championships, Lusk said he didn't attempt the Hart Attack backflip for months after his X Games crash.

"I was a little scared of it," he said.

Lusk enjoyed a successful 2008 season, during which he won Freestyle gold at the X Games, silver in Best Trick when he landed the first double grab Hart Attack backflip, and a bronze helmet in Freestyle at the Moto X World Championships. He also won both Freestyle and Best Trick last September at X Games Mexico and finished third overall in Freestyle on the '08 Dew Tour. A San Diego native, Lusk is survived by his wife, Lauren.

WAKS FM 96.5 yanks Chris Brown songs off the air

Local radio station WAKS FM/ 96.5 has removed all music by pop star Chris Brown -- currently under police investigation for allegedly attacking his girlfriend, 20-year-old singer Rihanna -- from its on-air playlist until further notice.

Brown, 19, was arrested Sunday night in Los Angeles and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. He was released after posting $50,000 bail.

Rihanna reportedly suffered visible injuries in the alleged physical confrontation in a car early Sunday morning. She is cooperating with police building a domestic violence case against Brown, according to press reports.

"After the alleged incident the phones exploded," Java Joel, evening host at "KISS FM" WAKS, said in a press release issued by Clear Channel. WAKS is owned by Clear Channel. "It's all that people wanted to talk about. They were outraged at this alleged behavior and wondered why we were continuing to support his music. I agreed and immediately pulled all Chris Brown songs from my show until this thing shakes out in the legal system."

KISS program director Bo Matthews said he decided to take Brown's music off the station entirely. "It appears that Chris has made some poor choices, we are following the lead of our listeners, and we will not be supporting Chris Brown on 96.5 Kiss FM in Cleveland until the alleged situation gets resolved," Matthews said.

This isn't the only fallout from Brown's legal troubles. The makers of Doublemint gum have stopped airing a television commercial featuring the singer.

"The Milk Mustache campaign is taking the allegations against Chris Brown very seriously.  We are very proud and protective of the image of the Milk Mustache campaign and the responsible message it sends to teens.  Mr. Brown’s ad was launched last fall and is scheduled to end this week.

So live your life,

Just live your life
Ain't got no time for no haters
