Bible Study / Re: Victory In Christ!
December 15, 2009, 08:04:25 AM

VICTORY IN CHRIST

How do we experience victory in Christ?  How do we experience the victorious Christian life?  This is the great and practical question for everyone who has put his trust in Christ.  In Romans 1-3.20 Paul sets forward the problem of sin and its devastating effect upon the human race.  In 3.21-5 he sets forward the doctrine for the solution to sin--faith in Christ.  In chapter 6 he begins to talk about the practical aspects of the Christian life following salvation.   That is, he begins to discuss sanctification.  Chapter 6 is devoted to the doctrine, chapter 7 the defeat, and chapter 8 the deliverance.

In the first seven chapters of Romans, the Holy Spirit is mentioned only in Romans 5.5.  But in Romans 8, he is mentioned 19 times!  The way of victory in the Christian life is by the Holy Spirit.  The Mosaic Law was powerless to achieve righteousness.  Does this mean that the Law was defective?  Not at all.  The problem is with us.  Paul refers to the problem as the "flesh".   It is his description of our Adamic nature.  The Law was holy, righteous, and good (Rom. 7.12) but our flesh (the old Adamic nature) is incapable of keeping it.  Paul says,

"For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit" (Rom. 8.3-4).

The moment a person puts his trust in Christ, he is baptized by the Holy Spirit.  Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12.13,

"For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit".

Paul also says,

"In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation -- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory" (Eph. 1.13-14).

All believers in Christ have the Holy Spirit indwelling them.  It is he who has power, who has made us alive to God.  When we yield ourselves to him, we can live a righteous and pleasing life before God.

Paul tells us that there a warfare going on between the flesh and the Spirit.  He says,

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.  For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law" (Gal. 5.16-17).

There are two parts to sanctification and spiritual growth.  One part is what God does through the Holy Spirit.  The other part we do.  Our part is to believe the Scriptures, what God says, and obey God.  The Holy Spirit's work in us and our believing the Bible and obeying Christ are inseparably linked.  It is much like a seed planted in the ground.  Intrinsic to a seed is the ability of growth and maturity.  But a seed's growth and maturity is also dependent on being watered, fertilized, and tended.  We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and our spirits have been quickened through the new birth.  This is like a seed's intrinsic power to become a mature plant.  Exercising faith is like the plant being watered, fertilized, and nurtured.  Paul described this process:

"But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth" (2 Thes. 2.13).

MANILA â€" President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday confirmed her plan to run for Congress in the May 2010 elections to represent the second legislative district of her home province of Pampanga in Central Luzon.

In a recorded interview over government station radio DzRB which was later aired nationwide over radio and TV Monday afternoon, the President explained her decision was in response to the growing clamor of her constituents in the province to run in next year’s polls so they could have a voice in the House of Representatives.

“After much soul-searching, I decided to accede to the wishes of my constituents in the second congressional district of Pampanga to run in the May 2010 polls,” President Arroyo stressed.

Moreover, she said that while in Congress, she could help pursue and implement her policies to help the poor as well as the major reforms she has initiated which shielded the country from the adverse impact of the ongoing global financial and economic crunch.

But the President’s announcement came as no surprise to many Filipinos. Earlier, speculations were rife that she would run for Congress next year due to her frequent visits, especially to the second district of Pampanga, starting early January.

As of Saturday, the President made a total of 50 visits to Pampanga to inaugurate, among others, the opening of farm to market roads, new school buildings and even projects to provide potable water to far-flung “barangays” (villages).

The speculations heightened when her son, Congressman Mikey Arroyo, announced he was willing to give up his post in her favor. Mikey, who is now on his second term as congressman, is allowed to run for reelection because under the law he can serve up to three consecutive terms.

Mikey added that if his mother decides to run for his post, he would join the May 2010 elections as the representative of a party list group, which he, however, refused to identify.

Besides, legal experts, led by her lawyer Romulo Macalintal, pointed out there is no law or a provision in the 1986 Constitution, banning the President from running for a lower elective office after she has completed her term in Malacanang.

Macalintal cited as an example the case of US President John Quincy Adams who ran and won as congressman for his home state in the US House of Representatives after he stepped down from the White House.

Besides, Macalintal, who told mediamen he was allowed by the President to speak on the issue, said she wants to continue serving the people as he stressed: “The President is still young and she feels that there’s still a lot of things she can do to continue public service.”

In the same interview, meanwhile, the President disputed allegations she wants to run for Congress so she could claim immunity from the various criminal and civil suits which various quarters have threatened to file against her in court once she is out of power.

The charges include plunder for alleged unabated and massive graft and corruption involving her and her family as well as human rights violations, particularly in the killing of militants, members of the religious and journalists.

The President pointed out that if she wins as member of Congress, she would only be “immune” from criminal cases that could arise when she delivers a controversial privilege speech.

She also laughed of claims that in running for Congress, she would be preparing for the possibility of her becoming prime minister if the issue of Charter change (Cha-cha) being pursued by her supporters would succeed.

Cha-cha aims mainly for a shift in the change in the form of government from the present presidential system to federal parliamentary.

According to President Arroyo, there have been options which she has been seriously considering when she steps down on June 30, 2010 after serving as president for about nine years since since she took over Malacanang following the ouster of president Joseph Estrada in February 2001.

One such option, she said, is to go back to teaching. Even while she was already vice president, Mrs. Arroyo used to teach economics and related subjects at the Ateneo de Manila University which is run by priests belonging to the Society of Jesus.

Another option, the President said, is to join a non-government organization, which she did not identify, actively engaged in projects and programmes similar to the policies she has implemented while in Malacanang.

But the more overriding reason why she has chosen to stay in politics, the President said, is her concern to serve the people of Pampanga, the home province of her father, the late president Diosdado Macapagal.

She disclosed she already alerted her representatives to file her certificate of candidacy before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in her hometown of Lubao also on Tuesday, the deadline set by the Comelec for the filing of such certificates as ordered by the Comelec.

In the same interview, President Arroyo pointed out she would not resign from her position as demanded by the opposition, civil society as well as militant and religious groups.

Until she steps down from Malacanang on June 30,2010, she vowed to continue the commitments she has made as President, including the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, her pro-poor programmes and bringing to the bar of justice the perpetrators of the November 23 massacre of at least 57 people in Mindanao.

Global Temperature Rise Accelerating
Lila Buckley

The average global temperature for 2004 of 14.60 degrees Celsius (58.28 degrees Fahrenheit) makes it the fourth warmest year on record. October and November of 2004 were the hottest of those months on record since recordkeeping began in 1880. February of 2004 was the second warmest, and March, April and December were the third warmest of those three months.

These record-breaking readings, which come from the global series maintained by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, continue a trend of rising global temperatures. The average temperature of 14.01 degrees Celsius in the 1970s rose to 14.26 degrees in the 1980s. In the 1990s it reached 14.40 degrees. And during the first five years of this new decade, it has averaged 14.59 degrees Celsius.

In fact, the five hottest years on record have all occurred within the last seven years. Of these five, 1998 was the warmest year on record, with an average global temperature of 14.71 degrees Celsius.

Rising temperatures are due primarily to the buildup of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere from the burning of increasing amounts of fossil fuels. Once released into the atmosphere, CO2 traps heat that would otherwise escape back into space. And emissions of CO2 have been rising since the start of the Industrial Revolution in 1760, causing temperatures to climb.

As carbon emissions continue to increase, so will the pace of climate change. During the past century, temperatures rose 0.6 degrees Celsius, with most of the increase occurring during the last three decades. But the average global temperature is projected to rise 1.4â€"5.8 degrees Celsius by 2100, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a global body of more than 1,500 scientists. The increase is expected to occur unevenly, with higher elevations and higher latitudes experiencing greater temperature changes than lower elevations and equatorial regions.

There is little question that a global temperature increase in the upper range of predictions would be highly disruptive. A report prepared for the U.S. Department of Defense in 2003 investigated the security implications of abrupt climate change over the next 20 years. One scenario showed that rising temperatures could bring large-scale drought in critical agricultural regions worldwide, extreme temperature drops in some regions and searing heat in others, and civil unrest and mass migrations from spreading insecurity about water and food supplies.

Even at the lowest projected temperature increases, climate change models predict more frequent and more severe storms, floods, heat waves, and droughtsâ€"all of which affect ecological biodiversity, human health, and economic security. Indeed, although we have only experienced temperature increases of a half-degree Celsius over the past several decades, the effects of climate change can already be seen in different parts of the world.

In May 2003, for example, 1,600 people died in a record heat wave in India, where death tolls from heat in the thousands are no longer uncommon. Three months later, another 35,000 people died in Europe from a heat wave that lasted for weeks. The record-breaking temperatures damaged crops across the continent, contributing to a 13 percent drop in the European grain harvest that year.

In the United States, a recent report by the Pew Center on Global Climate Change analyzing the results of 40 previous studies found a clear link between increased temperatures and numerous changes in natural systems across the country. Warmer winters, increased precipitation, and earlier springs are causing certain plant species to bloom several weeks earlier, disrupting insect food supplies and plant pollination cycles. Some animals are responding to warmer temperatures with shortened hibernation cycles, sometimes up to 23 days earlier than just 15 years ago, putting them at risk for starvation as they wait for spring food to become available. Temperature changes have led to shifts in many species’ habitats as populations move north and to higher elevations in search of cooler temperatures; it is estimated that about half of all wild species in the United States have already been affected by climate change.

Similar effects of rising temperatures are being documented worldwide. Ice and snow cover have shrunk 30 percent in the Himalayas over the past 30 years, increasing risk of flooding and glacial lake overflow. In Europe, spring events such as flower blooms have occurred progressively earlier since the 1960s, while fall events such as leaf color changes have been delayed each decade. These seasonal shifts have introduced species to new areas and disrupted migratory patterns of birds.

A new study by 300 scientists and indigenous leaders from eight countries over four years concluded that the Arctic, where warming has occurred at nearly twice the global average rate, “is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth.”

Siberia and Alaska have already warmed 2â€"3 degrees Celsius since the 1950s. Snow cover in the Arctic has shrunk by 10 percent, and summer sea ice cover is 15â€"20 percent smaller than it was 30 years ago. If these recent trends continue, polar bears are not likely to survive to the end of the century as melting ice shrinks their habitat and compromises their access to food. Tundra and permafrost are also thawing rapidly across the Arctic, threatening the survival of many land species and hampering transportation.

The increasing risks and costs related to these rapid temperature increases are already forcing Arctic coastal communities such as the Alaskan village of Shishmaref and industrial facilities such as the Pechora Sea oil storage facility to consider relocating. Not only do these changes affect the well-being of those in the Arctic, they also give an indication of the sort of change that lies ahead in the rest of the world as temperatures continue to rise during the twenty-first century.

This year’s temperature data provide further evidence of what some scientists are calling a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, in which human activities are the main driver of the global climate system. The amount of temperature increase beyond the lower-end projections depends on what we do now to curb carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases. We can continue using climate-disrupting fossil fuels, or we can choose to shift to renewable energies, more-efficient technology, and proactive climate change policies

More suspects being probed in Philippines massacre+
Nov 27 05:59 AM US/Eastern

MANILA, Nov. 27 (AP) - (Kyodo)â€"Eight more members of the political clan that allegedly plotted Monday's poll-related massacre of 57 unarmed civilians on the southern island of Mindanao are being investigated, a senior Philippine justice official said Friday.
Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera also said the government has a "good case" against Andal Ampatuan Jr., the main suspect who was taken into custody on Thursday.

Ampatuan Jr. is a local mayor in Maguindanao Province and the son of Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr.

She quoted witnesses as saying that the younger Ampatuan shot some of the massacre victims himself. So far she said her department has collected 30 affidavits.

"We are continuing to build the cases against the eight other suspects in the case," she told reporters.

Aside from Ampatuan Jr., authorities have also taken into custody at least 20 militiamen and four police officers who might have links with the carnage, which drew condemnation from around the world.

Authorities are looking for the operator of a backhoe used to bury the victims. The excavating machine was traced to the provincial government.

The Philippine military high command has also relieved at least two military ground commanders due to "misconduct" and "failure of intelligence."

However, the Mangudadatus, who have a running feud with the Ampatuan clan over control of Maguidanao, are calling for more arrests. The Ampatuans, a close political ally of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, have ruled Maguidanao for years.

As of Friday noon, Col. Jonathan Ponce, a spokesman for the army, said the military has so far recovered 392 firearms from the Ampatuans.

Also recovered were two improvised armored vehicles with Philippine National Police markings and camouflage, Ponce said.

Also Friday, Buluan Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu, who lost his wife and supporters in the massacre, registered his candidacy for governor of Maguindanao, saying only death will stop him from pursuing his political plans.

Escorted by military and police, Mangudadatu submitted his documents to the local election office in Shariff Aguak, making official his plan to replace Ampatuan Sr. as governor.

The 50-car convoy took the same highway were the six-car convoy of Mangudadatu's wife, two sisters, supporters and journalists were stopped and eventually gunned down by about 100 armed men identified with the Ampatuans.

Ampatuan Jr. is now being detained at a National Bureau of Investigation jail while awaiting a decision by the Justice Department on whether to file multiple murder charges against him.

He has protested his innocence, saying it was staged by the country's largest secessionist group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

The Ampatuans claim the MILF is out to destroy the reputation of their clan, prompting them to arm about 400 militiamen for protection.

The MILF, which denied involvement in Monday's carnage, has condemned what it described as a "barbaric massacre." They urged Arroyo to "act fast, fairly and apprehend the criminals."

Philippines charges massacre suspect with murder

    26 Nov 2009By Manny Mogato

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine police filed murder charges on Thursday against the main suspect in the massacre of 57 people in the south of the country this week as authorities moved to dismantle his clan's control over the region.

Andal Ampatuan Jr, a local mayor in Maguindanao province, came face to face with Esmael Mangudadatu, husband of one of the women murdered, who filed multiple murder complaints before state prosecutors in southern General Santos City.

Ampatuan was flown out from Maguindanao province by an army helicopter after he was handed over by his brother to a senior government official and a top regional army general.

"The charges are baseless," Ampatuan told reporters at the airport in General Santos. "They are not true. My conscience is clear."

Authorities said Ampatuan would be held in a prison in Manila while undergoing investigation by state prosecutors in advance of the complaint going before a local court.

On Monday, about 100 armed men attacked a convoy carrying members of the Mangudadatu clan, who were on their way to file the candidacy of Esmael for the provincial governor's post in elections next year.

The attackers herded the victims to a remote hillside and attacked them with M-16 rifles and machetes. At least 10 of those killed were motorists who were passing by on the highway and had apparently witnessed the abduction.

Not all the victims have been identified but 22 of them were believed to be journalists accompanying the family, making Monday's attack the deadliest ever on the media anywhere in the world.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has called the Ampatuans valuable political allies in the past, but her government announced moves against the family on Thursday after the massacre sparked worldwide condemnation.

"I am requesting the investigation of the provincial governor and other mayors relative to this case," Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno told reporters, adding those officials should be suspended while facing an inquiry.

Clan wars like the feud between the Mangudadatus and the Ampatuans are common in the southern Philippines. There are also many communist and Islamist rebels, bandits and pirates there.

    PARAMILITARY DISARMED

Andal Ampatuan Sr, the patriarch of the family, has been elected governor of Maguindanao three times. He quit the post earlier this year and placed a son as officer in charge.

Another son, Zaldy, is governor of a separate Autonomous Region covering six provinces in Muslim Mindanao.

Many other family members are mayors across the province

‘Other Ampatuans also probed over massacre’

By TJ Burgonio

Close this MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Malacañang exulted on Thursday over the surrender of Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. in connection with the Maguindanao massacre, ruling out any special treatment for him.

“The taking in, inquest and the subsequent filing of charges against Datu Unsay [Mayor] Ampatuan is just the beginning,” Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said. “President Arroyo wants all the culprits punished without fear or favor.”

Undersecretary Lorelei Fajardo, deputy presidential spokesperson, allayed fears that Andal Jr., a known political ally of the Arroyo administration, would get VIP treatment while in government custody.

“We treat people the same way. We will follow the law,” she said in a Malacañang briefing.

Police Director Andres Caro said that investigators were not ruling out the involvement of Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. and Governor Zaldy Ampatuan of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in the massacre.

“We are also looking into that,” the Philippine National Police director for operations said when asked in the briefing whether investigators were looking into the conspiracy.

The civilians were killed on a highway in Shariff Aguak town in Maguindanao, where investigators recovered a backhoe that belonged to the provincial government headed by Andal Sr.

The PNP and Malacañang, however, were hard put at explaining why the authorities opted to let Andal Jr. surrender, instead of putting the cuffs on him.

Caro admitted that Secretary Jesus Dureza, as head of the crisis management committee, was given free rein to persuade Andal Jr. to submit himself for questioning in the face of reports linking him to the crime.

“By night time (Tuesday night) the family committed to bring the mayor to Secretary Dureza. This did not materialize Wednesday but happened today,” he said.

He said that there was no order for his arrest because at the time he was not yet considered a suspect. He said it was only on Wednesday when he was considered a suspect based on witnesses' affidavits.

Fajardo clarified that Dureza did not negotiate for Andal's surrender, saying the marching order from Arroyo was for him “to get all people involved and take into custody all people involved.”

“It was Dureza's call to go to Ampatuan to determine what should be done by the committee based on the situation on the ground. The President gave her full confidence by creating the crisis committee,” she said.

“There was no negotiation or appeasement whatsoever... We should understand the very complex situation in the ground,” she added.

Caro explained the situation on the ground was complex because of several factors.

“This is an autonomous regional government area. There is actual real immediate threat from MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) groups. There are infamous reports of warlordism culture and we have to admit to thefact that some of our local security forces are in some way were or are under influence of political leaders,” he said. “We cannot trust the local forces so we have to inject troops from the outside

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructions
Step 1
Reduce interestCall your credit card companies to cut interest rates on your card balances. This is one of my top tips on how to save money, as doing it with one account saved me over $700 in a year. Be creative when calling, tell them you want to transfer the balance to a competing credit company and have them work to keep your business.

Step 2
Compare ratesLook for better rates on phone, internet and cable services. Find competitors rates and call your current service, requesting that they beat or match those rates to keep your business. You can also call to "cancel service" and when they offer you a deal to stay, accept it.

Step 3
Reduce debtPay more than the minimum on card balances to cut down on interest paid. You'll save a good deal of money in the long run, even though it costs more up front.

Step 4
Use cashUse cash instead of credit cards. The average consumer will spend 16% less using cash than when paying with plastic. This is especially true in grocery stores where it is easy to justify buying extras.

Step 5
Make breadMake food from scratch and grow some of your own produce to save money on groceries. Making homemade bread is one of the best tips to save money, and the results are better tasting too (once you get practice). A simple garden with tomatoes and a few seasonal vegetables will help you save even more money.

Step 6
Shop salesNever pay full price for clothing. Buy your new duds on sales, seasonal clearances, consignment shops and discount stores. Children's clothing can be found at yard sales and flea markets for incredible bargains.

Step 7Comparison shop for electronics and big ticket items such as appliances. The time spent looking for the best price will be well worth the effort.

Step 8
CarPay cash for cars. Save up and pay for a used vehicle, rather than financing your transportation. The amount of money spent on financing costs is very high -- so pay for it yourself to save a bundle.

Step 9
Save moneyLook for banks with no fees on checking accounts. Withdraw cash from bank branches, in-network ATMs or during debit transactions at grocery store or USPS, other retailers to avoid the $2-$4 charges just to get your own money.
