It is probably a good thing that comedy queen Ai Ai delas Alas isn't the lightning-powered, thunderbolt-wielding Filipino superheroine Volta in real life: otherwise a convenience store in Manila would have been reduced to a smoking wreck by now.

Then again, delas Alas, who plays Volta in the movies and on TV, doesn't need superpowers to protect her son.

Delas Alas was angered after her 16-year-old son told her that he was manhandled, verbally abused and detained by a staffmember of a convenience store after he was accused of shoplifting two tubes of candy.

"Hindi ko alam yung magagawa ko. Gusto kong magwala, gusto kong pumunta doon, gusto ko silang murahin lahat, gusto kong pasabugin yung tindahan nila," the comic actress told ABS-CBN's "The Buzz" on Sunday, as she described the state she was in when she learned about what happened to her son.

(I didn't know what to do. I wanted to go crazy, I wanted to go there, I wanted to curse them to their faces. I wanted to blow up their store.)

She said that instead of giving in to such destructive urges, she decided to take legal action against the store's owner and staff.

"Natuto na ako. Noong araw ganito ako magalit. Nagwawala ako. Ang nangyayari yung mga kaaway ko, ako rin ang dinedemanda," she said, prompting some unintentional laughter from the studio audience. (I learned my lesson. In the old days I would get angry like that. I go ballistic. What would happen is my enemies end up suing me.)

"The Buzz" also reported that delas Alas's lawyer would be filing charges of child abuse against the storeowner and the staff involved.

Delas Alas said one of the store's male staffers allegedly took the boy inside the stockroom and accused him of theft. The man then took off his shirt and started punching the boxes of supplies, apparently to scare the boy into a confession.

The supposed attacker allegedly hit delas Alas' son twice, and only calmed down when the boy said that he wasn't a thief, showed that he had money to pay for the candy, and identified himself as the son of the actress.

"The Buzz" was able to get the side of a store official, identified as personnel manager Eric Diez, who denied that the comedian's son was abused in any way.

Diez explained that it was unlikely that the staffer involved, identified only as "Melvin", would attack the comedian's son.

"Actually mali rin yung nasa diyaryo na ikinulong at binugbog, hindi naman siguro sasaktan. Ang laking tao ni Melvin para saktan yung bata," said Diez in a taped interview with "The Buzz".

(Actually, the newspaper reports are wrong about the detention and physical abuse. I don't think the boy was hurt. Melvin is such a big guy, he wouldn't dare hurt the child.)

Diez also denied that the storeowner and staff are hiding Melvin. Diez explained that Melvin had filed his resignation letter on December 1, so by December 16 he was no longer with the store.

The incident involving Melvin and delas Alas' son happened on December 11.

The store's owner, a certain Sammy Lopez, was interviewed by "The Buzz" but he requested that the interview no longer be aired.

Instead, he gave a message to the comedy actress, advising her to find out the truth about the incident and maybe, in the end, she would be the one to apologize to him.

Such an unsympathetic remark did not sit well with the actress, who countered: "Hindi niyo alam kung anong pakiramdam ng isang ina na ginanon ang anak. Alam ko po ang totoo. Kilala ko ang anak ko. At sana'y ikaw kung sino ka man na may-ari, ikaw sana alamin mo yung totoo. Yung tamang totoo. At baka ikaw ang mag-sorry sa akin."

(You have no idea how a mother feels when her son is abused. I know the truth. I know my son. And I hope that you, whoever you are, you find the truth out. The real truth. And maybe you'll apologize to me.)

Delas Alas insisted that her son is incapable of lying about the matter and that her son did not steal anything.

"Kilala ko mga anak ko. Labing-anim na taon kong inalagaan yung anak ko.  Pinalaki ko sila sa pagmamahal. Pinalaki ko silang may takot sa Diyos. Pinalaki ko silang hindi sinungaling. At higit sa lahat pinalaki ko silang hindi magnanakaw," she said tearfully, her face twisted in anger and hurt.

(I know my children. Sixteen years I raised my son. I raised them in love. I raised them with the fear of God. I raised them not to be liars. And most of all I raised them not to be thieves.)

The comedian said that what she cannot accept is they way her son was treated by the store staff.

"Menor de edad ang anak ko. Bata pa yon na walang kalaban-laban. Ano'ng karapatan ninyong saktan ang anak ko? Yan ba ang SOP sa tindahan niyo? Na kung meron man ilalagay niyo sa stock room? Ano'ng gagawin niyo sa stock room? Tatakutin kagaya ng ginawa niyo sa anak ko? Gugulpihin kung gusto niyo? Dahil wala namang nakakakita sa kanila doon di ba?," she told the camera.

(My son is a minor. He's young and defenseless. What right do you have to hurt my son? Is that standard procedure in your store? That if there is a suspect you take him to the stock room? What would you do there? Terrorize him like what you did to my son? Beat him up if you want? Because there would be no witnesses, right?)

The comedian even had a message for his son's alleged assailant: "Sana wala kang anak para hindi mo maramdaman kung anong nararamdaman ko. Hindi biro pag sinaktan ang anak. Hindi niyo alam ang pakiramdam."

(I hope you don't have children so you wouldn't feel what I feel. It's no joke when your child is attacked. You have no idea how bad it feels.)

Delas Alas also quoted his son as telling the store staff:  "Hindi ko po sisirain ang pangalan ng nanay ko dahil lang po sa kendi." (I would never ruin my mother's good name just because of some candy.)

World Daily News / 19 hurt in Japan earthquake
January 07, 2008, 02:27:59 PM
World (as of 3/20/2005 1:55 PM)

TOKYO - A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu on Sunday, injuring at least 19 people, causing some houses to collapse and halting trains, media and officials said.

The meteorological agency issued tsunami warnings, but the advisories were lifted about an hour later.

Authorities, however, advised people to stay away from the coast and warned that aftershocks with magnitude of up to 6 were possible.

The focus of the quake was off the western coast of Fukuoka Prefecture, about 900 km southwest of Tokyo on the island of Kyushu, and the depth was shallow, the meteorological agency said.

The quake was felt as far away as Seoul, the capital of South Korea. NHK showed footage of office buildings swaying in Fukuoka city, broken windows and cracks in pavements, and walls of buildings leaning to one side in Kyushu.

"It was so strong that I thought my house would collapse. I rushed to turn off the stove and evacuated. I felt uneasy because it was my first experience." Toshiyuki Yasukawa, an official in the town of Sue in Fukuoka, told NHK.

Kyodo news said 19 people were injured in Fukuoka prefecture as of 1 p.m. (0400 GMT), according to police and local officials.

A 26-year-old woman at an electric appliance store in Imari city in Saga prefecture, who cut her hand on shards of glass from a cracked TV screen.

There were reports of broken water and gas mains, and high speed bullet trains and other trains and subways suspended operations. Bullet trains later resumed operation, media said.

Public broadcaster NHK showed footage of collapsed houses on Genkaijima, a small island not far from Fukuoka City on the main island of Kyushu.

"Aftershocks are continuing. We're all still nervous," said Shishida Yoshihisa, a school teacher in Genkaijima.

Kyodo said Fukuoka prefecture has asked for military helicopters to be sent to the island to transport injured people.

Power outages

Fukuoka Airport suspended operations for checks but there were no reports of damage and it later reopened.

Some power outages were reported, but Kyushu Electric Power Co. said neither of its two nuclear power plants in Saga and Kagoshima prefectures were affected by the earthquake.

The earthquake, which hit at around 10:53 a.m. (0153 GMT) was recorded at magnitude 7.0 according to a technique similar to the Richter scale but adjusted for Japan's geological characteristics.

The quake registered a maximum intensity of lower six on the Japanese seismic scale of seven.

A quake measuring a lower six on the Japanese scale can make it difficult to stand. Sometimes, less quake resistant houses may collapse and gas pipes or water mains can be damaged.

"It shook from side to side, as if a big truck were passing by, and things fell off the shelves," said one woman in Fukuoka.

Officials gathered at the prime minister's official residence in Tokyo to monitor the situation, Kyodo said.

"I've received reports about the earthquake. Since there have been tsunami warnings, I have issued instructions to watch the situation closely," Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi was quoted by NHK as telling reporters.

Katsuyuki Abe, a seismologist at the University of Tokyo, told NHK that an earthquake of magnitude 7 had hit the area about 300 years ago, but there were no records of other major quakes there since.

"This is a rare earthquake hitting the area," he said.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

In October 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the Niigata region in northern Japan, killing more than 40 people and injuring more than 3,000.

That was the deadliest quake since a magnitude 7.3 tremor hit the city of Kobe in 1995, killing more than 6,400.

Bin Laden whereabouts are speculation: Pakistan envoy to US

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The belief by intelligence organizations that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is in a remote Pakistan border area is just "speculation," Pakistan's envoy to the United States said Sunday.

Mahmoud Ali Durrani was asked on CNN about an interview Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf gave to CBS television, to be broadcast later Sunday.

CNN quoted Musharraf as saying of bin Laden: "There is no proof whatsoever that he's here.

"We are not particularly looking for him, but we are operating against him and Al-Qaeda and militant Taliban and in the process obviously combined maybe we are looking for him also."

Durrani sought to clarify saying "I think the president is suggesting that neither we, nor the US, has any intelligence where exactly Osama bin Laden is."

"He may be in Afghanistan," the ambassador said. "He may be in the border region. If we knew where he was, we would have taken him out."

The New York Times reported that under a proposal being discussed in Washington, CIA operatives based in Afghanistan would be able to call on direct military support for counter-terrorism operations in neighboring Pakistan.

Durrani noted that US and other foreign intelligence agencies believe bin Laden to be sheltering in the tribal area along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

But "that's just speculation," the envoy said.

"Believe me. If they knew or we knew we would have taken him out," he said.

"And when Musharraf says that he's not specifically looking for Osama, what he really means is that we are totally focused on destroying Al-Qaeda and the Taliban network and not just one person."

newlywed couple lost around P500,000 worth of cash and valuables to thieves inside their room in a hotel on Roxas Boluevard, Manila Sunday.

Jun Limpasan and his bride, Kristine, said their bridal suite at Bayview Park Hotel on Roxas Boulevard was ransacked by robbers.

The couple’s cousin, Nadia Limpasan, discovered the robbery at room 615 around 10:30 p.m. Sunday when she was about to get the wedding souvenirs inside the room.

She told police investigators that the room was in total disarray with the couple’s things scattered all over the floor.

Police Officer 3 Gordius Alumbro suspected an inside job in the robbery, noting there was no forced entry.

Investigators also recovered a key card from room 425 on the electronic lock of the couple’s room.

Police are still investigating the case.

Last December 31, a foreigner also lost P125,000 left inside his room at the same hotel.

By HECTOR PASCUA, Vienna, Austria
ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau

Wilson Tanho, a Filipino employee in the United Nations in Vienna celebrated Christmas in a very unique way.

Instead of putting a part of his earnings during the past year into some other things, he chose to gather his resources in order to feed the homeless people in Vienna.

On Christmas Eve, Wilson, together with Lorna Titgemeyer, Minni Langer and Mila Leutner, all Pinoy volunteers â€" took time to prepare the ingredients needed for the charity work.

Almost 200 homeless, most of them men, waited patiently for the exotic food that the Pinoys prepared. Wilson cooked pansit (noodles), fried rice and fried chicken.

Wilson has already been doing this charity work for the past 4 years.

Wilson commented: "Six years ago, pagkatapos ng Christmas party namin sa bahay, napansin ko na napakaraming sobrang pagkain (after our Christmas party, I noticed we had a lot of left-overs). I thought of bringing these to the train station, where the "sandler" (homeless) are staying. Afterwards, I learned that there is a CARITAS House in Vienna, where homeless could temporarily stay."

Wilson did not only cook for the homeless. He was able to gather from generous donors Christmas presents for them, too. Packs of cigarettes, soaps, shampoos, tissue papers, chocolates, toothbrush and toothpaste and other necessities were distributed to the delight of the homeless.

Wilson added: "In addition to foods, we are also giving these people some gifts, kasi wala naman silang pamilya na magbigay sa kanila ng regalo (since they no family who would give them gifts). At least through these little and simple gifts, ay mabubuksan silang regalo today or this Christmas (they will open gifts today or this Christmas)."

Lorna Titgemeyer, the Chairman of the Council of Filipino Associations in Austria started her first year of working for the charity effort.

She said: "Indeed, it is very easy to contribute material things. Though I am very much convinced that when one contributes time and effort, the worth is much more. That is why, when Wilson asked me to help him, I immediately answered him yes."

The homeless beneficiaries were very much grateful for the time and effort given by the Filipinos. They appreciated very much their willingness and dedication to help even though they are immigrants here.

One positive remark from a homeless: "Personally, find it very good that the Filipinos are doing this. I am very grateful that such people, though immigrants here in Austria are doing something for a good cause."

This charitable action initiated by Wilson five years ago has become a tradition for him. He regards these people his family, in a sense that he himself has no home and family here. He said he was just lucky enough to obtain a good job at the UN and could do something worthwhile for the homeless.

Wilson said, "I do this as my personal commitment. Christmas is about giving or sharing. Now, I don’t have my family here, so I also said to my friends, I want to celebrate Christmas with those people with no families at all, like me. So I spend Christmas with the homeless as well."

- GMANews.TV

A testy Ara Mina told ABS-CBN's "Entertainment Live!" on Saturday that if rumors are true that the wife of Manny Pacquiao is jealous of her, then the boxing champ should just quit making movies.

During an interview with hosts Toni Gonzaga and Bianca Gonzales, the sexy actress-singer at first laughed off the so-called "sweet" publicity photos of her and the boxing champ turned movie actor.

Mina however became visibly irritated when asked about rumors concerning the Pacman's allegedly jealous wife.

Mina told the "Entertainment Live!" hosts that she's sick and tired of the rumors.

When asked whether it was true that the Pacman's wife blocked the early release of the publicity photos, Mina declined to answer directly.

Instead, she looked at the studio audience and said, "Kayo, may nakita ba kayong publicity photo? Ngayon lang di ba, kung kelan  na showing na yung movie? Di ba dapat before pa lang?

"Ang masasabi ko lang siguro hindi sila sanay sa pelikula. Kung totoo man na nagseselos siya, alam mo wag na lang siguro mag artista si Manny, kung pagseselosan niya lahat ng babaeng makakaksama niya. Dapat siguro siya na lang ang leading lady."

(How about you? Have you seen any publicity photo? Didn't you see them only now that the movie's released? Weren't they supposed to be released before the film is shown? The only thing I can say is that maybe, they're not used to the movie business. If ever it's true that she's jealous, then maybe Manny should just quit as an actor if she's going to get jealous of all the women he'll be with. Maybe she should be his leading lady instead.)

The photos that appeared in newspapers belatedly on New Year's Day, were publicity shots meant for the Metro Manila Film Festival entry "Anak ng Kumander".

Pacquiao plays a rebel leader in the film while Mina stars as a reporter who becomes his character's love interest.

The photos should have been released long before the film opened on January 1 but  was reportedly delayed because someone had tried to stop their publication.

That someone, according to the showbiz grapevine, is supposedly Jinky, the wife of Pacquiao.

Even months before the film was shown, there have been persistent rumors that Pacquiao and Mina are having an affair.

The actress and the boxer have denied the rumors. Jinky has stayed silent.

Mina explained that her testy remarks were borne out of her own exasperation. Otherwise, she said that her relationship with Pacquiao is okay.

"Napagod lang ako sa issue kaya minsan ngayon nagbibitaw ako ng salita na medyo mashoray."

Mina appealed to the public to leave behind the whole issue about her, Pacquiao and his wife, and move on.

"Tapos na wag na natin silang pakialaman. Tapos na yung pelikula. I have a new movie, I have a new show."

(It's all over, let's not meddle in their affairs. The movie is over.)

Ara Mina was again in the news lately after she left her old network, GMA-7, and moved to ABS-CBN to portray Cassandra, a new character on the afternoon soap "Prinsesa ng Banyera."

Interestingly, Mina moved to ABS-CBN to replace actress-singer Angelika dela Cruz, who moved to GMA-7.

Dela Cruz's character in the soap has already been killed off to make way for the new character played by Mina.

Mina said that she made sure to iron everything out with her former network so that there wouldn't be any problems.

Mina, who used to be a regular on a comedy series, even joked about the prospect of her taking on a sexy look for "Prinsesa ng Banyera".

When the show's producer's asked her if she was comfortable going sexy on the soap opera, she quipped: "Sure why not? Dalaga na ako, eh. (Sure, why not? I'm a big girl now)."

Mina was making reference to the fact that she started her career in the 1990s as a sex symbol, appearing in several Filipino soft porn films when such movies were still hot.

When the sexy movie trend passed, Mina took up singing and comedy. For several years, she was a mainstay on the late night comedy show "Bubble Gang" which capitalizes not only on jokes, but the voluptuous charms of its buxom cast that used to include Mina.

For the New Year, Mina said that she wishes to have a new boyfriend. She said that for one thing, it would end all speculation about whom she's having a relationship with.

"Minsan nakakaramdam ka rin ng, 'Ay sana may naggu-goodnight sa akin'," she said.

Former WBC light flyweight kingpin Brian Viloria from Philippines made a successful return appearance, scoring a knockdown in the final round against Jose Garcia Bernal en route to a comfortable eight-round unanimous decision win moments ago at the Alameda Swap Meet in Los Angeles, California.

According to 15rounds.com, Viloria took some punches as the switch-hitting Bernal changed stances throughout the fight, but the Fil-Am fighter was credited for being more active throughout the affair. Viloria knocked down Bernal with a big right to the breadbasket in the early going of the final round, thus sealing his victory.

All three judges saw the bout 78-72 for Viloria who now improves to 20-2. Bernal slides to 26-11-1.

A deal for a movie starring former Philippine president Joseph Estrada and comedy queen Ai Ai delas Alas has been finalized.

According to a report from radio dzMM’s Laila Chikadora, negotiations between Estrada, delas Alas and ABS-CBN’s Star Cinema were successfully concluded.

There is still no working title for the forthcoming movie but the report said it would most likely be a family-oriented comedy.

Delas Alas has said that she is elated over the prospect of starring opposite Estrada, who is one of the most respected, legendary figures in Philippine cinema even before he entered politics.

The comedy star has been doing well in her career, and will soon be seen on the small screen in the superhero series “Volta” to be aired over ABS-CBN.

She plays the title role of Volta, a female superhero with the power to generate bolts of electricity.

Estrada has not acted in a film for three decades. His last film as an actor was “Sa Kuko ng Agila” (In the Claws of the Eagle) way back in 1989.

Estrada in an earlier interview with radio dzMM said that he prefers doing a comedy film for his comeback, since at his ageâ€"he’s 70 years old---any romantic scenes are out of the question.

However, the report quoted delas Alas as saying that a kissing scene between her and the former president would be a good idea.

Starting Jan. 1, 2008, departing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) began to pay a lower OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) membership fee because of the fall in the peso-dollar exchange rate in 2007 which hit a 7-year high of P41.10=$1 last December 10.

OWWA Administrator Marianito Roque said that because of the 19 percent drop, the OFW contribution to the welfare fund was set at P1,050 per employment contract.

Roque said this was arrived at during the OWWA Board meeting last December 17, 2007 when the board issued OWWA Resolution No. 38 lowering the contribution.

He said the previous amount was based on a peso-dollar exchange rate of P51=$1.

Roque added in an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com that OWWA Resolution No. 38 will also be applied retroactively to benefit OFWs who paid the OWWA membership contribution at the old exchange rate from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2007.

He said OWWA contributors during the said period will be issued credit memoranda, which shall entitle the bearer OWWA member to an extended OWWA membership for a period of three (3) months beyond the two (2) years / twenty-four (24) months maximum entitlement to OWWA programs and services. These members will be notified in writing of their entitlement to the said credit memorandum.

To prevent any further similar occurrences, Roque said the collection of OWWA membership contributions would reflect accurately the changing dollar-peso exchange rate, the aforementioned resolution also provided that the said exchange rate would be based on the average dollar-peso exchange rate of the preceding month as determined by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

But OFWs in Saudi Arabia said "the fact still remains that the OWWA membership fee (be it in USD or Pesos) is illegal and unconstitutional. LOI 537 and Republic Act 8042 provisions will give weight that OWWA Omnibus Code runs counter to existing magna carta law of the OFWs."

Filipino community leaders there suggested that Senate and Congress should review all existing laws related to fees being collected from the OFWs "with diligence" and compel the Commission on Audit (COA) to come out with an audited financial report of OWWA's expenses for the last seven years vis-à-vis how much of this OWWA membership fee directly benefits each and every OF

The Filipino seamen killed in an explosion during an attack by militants in Port Harcourt, Nigeria on Dec. 19 will be entitled to all the benefits due as a member of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, the agency’s administrator assured on Thursday.

OWWA Administrator Marianito Roque said the Department of Foreign Affairs has verified that Vito Cruz, an electrician for MT KENO tanker, was updated in his dues. Being so, his beneficiaries will be entitled to a P200,000 accident insurance and P20,000 burial assistance. These are in addition to the benefits from his Makati-based manning agency, SeaGem.

“He is an OWWA member so he will get all the necessary benefits from us," Roque said in a telephone interview.

His beneficiaries will also be provided with livelihood assistance and possible educational assistance for his children who are below 21 years old.

Cruz was the lone fatality in a fire that hit the MT KENO tanker at dawn on Dec. 19 in Port Harcourt, River State due to the attack by the militants that reached the vessel, causing its oil tank to explode.

His colleagues were taken to the Presidential Hotel for temporary refuge. But on New Year’s Eve, the militants attacked another police precinct near the hotel, leaving the Filipino crew trapped inside.

The DFA identified the the 18 trapped seamen as Tomas Obial, Cesar Guadalupe, Nestor Barba, Pancho Lagutan, Edgar Ballesteros, Melchor Malana, Elmer Temblor, Simeon Avilla, William Prosia, James Panaguiton, Jozane Ponce, Ronald Padasas, Richard Peniano, Manual Tabang, Alfonso Zarate, Frankie Viacrucis, Nino Luengas and Alvin Jovellano.

Under the Seafarers Act, Filipino seamen are also covered by the international rules on protection and indemnity insurance during cases of accidents and deaths.

Claro Cristobal, DFA spokesman said in a separate interview said the remains of Cruz may not yet be repatriated this week along with the 18 other seamen trapped in a hotel in River State because the documents for his repatriation may not be completed.

DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Esteban Conejos Jr said Wednesday evening that arrangements were being done for the homecoming of the 18 trapped Filipinos on Friday. They were supposed to have been moved out of the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt Wednesday night.

M/T Keno was manned by an all-Filipino crew. The vessel was docked in Port Harcourt when a jetty fire caused by the militants’ attack reached M/T Keno, resulting in the explosion of its tank. - Marie S. Neri, GMANews.TV

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- A South Korean boxer who fell into a coma after winning his WBO intercontinental flyweight title fight last week was declared dead early Thursday.

Choi Yo-sam was declared dead after his internal organs were removed for donation, a spokesman at Asan Hospital said. A hospital committee had pronounced Choi brain dead Wednesday after a series of tests. He had been in a coma since shortly after winning the fight against challenger Heri Amol in Seoul on Dec. 25.

The 33-year-old South Korean was knocked down just before the end of the 12th and final round of the bout but got back up and was declared the winner on points before collapsing.

Doctors were legally required to get approval from the prosecutors' office before organ donation.

"He has lived a hard life," South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted Oh Soon-hui, Choi's 65-year-old mother, as saying. "I hope he has gone to a peaceful place."

Choi was the WBC light flyweight world champion from October 1999 to July 2002, and fought for the WBA light flyweight world title in September 2004.

South Korea's boxing commission had no immediate comment.

The South Korean government said Thursday it would award a medal to Choi in recognition of the organ donation and victory in his last fight.

Kim Jong-min, South Korea's culture minister, was to deliver the award -- given to people who develop sports in the country -- to Choi's family members.

In 1982, South Korean lightweight Duk Koo Kim died four days after being knocked out by Ray Mancini in a title fight in Las Vegas. Another South Korean fighter, bantamweight Lee Tong-choon, died of acute brain swelling in 1995, four days after losing consciousness following a fight against Setsuo Kawamasu in Tokyo.

OPBF lightweight champion Randy "Komong Bato" Suico is being groomed to challenge WBC lightweight king David Diaz on March 15 as an undercard to the superbout pitting superstar Manny Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Suico's trainer Juanito Ablaca, in an interview, has informed that big-time Cebu promoter Rex 'Wakee' Salud is now negotiating for Suico's inclusion in the event, which is being co-promoted by Oscar De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum's Top Rank.

The power-punching Suico (27-3, 23 KO's) is ranked highly by the WBC at no. 6 in the lightweight division, making him qualified as a choice challenger for Diaz.

A possible Diaz versus Suico battle will also further ignite the already explosive Philippines versus Mexico theme of the event, where Pacquiao goes for Marquez's WBC superfeatherweight belt in a battle of their country's top fighters.

"Randy will also serve as Pacman's sparring partner," added Ablaca.

Suico had previously lost to Juan Diaz in his first bid for the WBA lightweight title, although he has since racked up three victories in a row following that loss.

At least two other Filipinos--Juanito Rubillar and Ciso Morales--are already set to see action on the March 15 card at the Mandalay Bay.

Rubillar will take on ex-WBC light flyweight champ Omar Nino while Morales takes on a soon-to-be-named opponent.

MANILA, Philippines â€" (5th UPDATE) The fire that hit a shopping complex in Pasay City was finally declared under control, 10 hours after it started Thursday, according to the Bureau of Fire and National Capital Region-Tactical Operations Center.

The blaze at the Galleria Shopping Mall, which began at 6 a.m., was put under control at 3:35 p.m., the center said.

The mall’s proximity to the Light Rail Transit Baclaran Station prompted LRT authorities to temporarily limit the trips from the Monumento to the EDSA terminals.

The fire reached Task Force Echo, the fifth alarm in a seven-step fire alert level system, said Superintendent Sofia Mendoza, district fire marshal of the Bureau of Fire and the National Capital Region Tactical Operations Center (NCR-TOC).

A task force status means all the fire trucks available in Metro Manila must help.

Firefighters had a hard time putting out the blaze because of poor crowd control, according to a radio report. Most of the goods sold in the mall were RTW garments, to which damage was estimated at P91 million by fire officials.

Meanwhile, the LRT will service commuters up to the EDSA station even if the fire had been put out, administrator Mel Robles said.

"We have to check the system if we can resume operations," Robles said in a phone interview.

The fire was said to have originated from a stall on the mall's second floor. There have been no reported casualties.

Quiapo church exec admits lapses in Nazarene trampling

The administration of the Quiapo Church in Manila admitted lapses in the trampling of six devotees of the Black Nazarene during the traditional thanksgiving procession on New Year's Day, ABS-CBN News reported Wednesday.

Fr. Alvin Fullon said there were lapses on the part of church administration and the people tasked to provide protection for the devotees.

“May lapses din, supposed to be ang mga taong magpoprotekta hindi lahat nakarating, undermanned (There were lapses because some of the people supposed to provide protection failed to come),” Fullon said.

The victims of the trampling were identified as Norberto Dulce, Rodolfo Noveda, Willie Ramada, Aron Apostol, Michael Rodriguez and Reynaldo Sugi. They all sustained injuries on their feet and were immediately brought to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

More than 4,000 people flocked to the Quaipo Church to take part in the traditional thanksgiving procession of the Black Nazarene.

The organizers decided to place the Nazarene on a carriage with iron wheels after it tilted when devotees lifted the base that holds the image.

“Tumatagilid na ang Señor kaya nag-desisyon na ang organizer na ilabas ang patungan na me gulong para mailabas siya (The image tilted so organizers decided to put it on the wheeled carriage for the procession),” said Fullon.

As a result, six devotees were injured after the statue’s carriage ran over their feet while it was being taken out of the church.

“Nagpilit sila pumasok sa ilalim, karamihan mga lasing (They insisted on walking under the carriage, most of them were drunk),” said Peter Madela, one of the image's caretakers at the Nuestra Padre Jesus Nazareno Basilica.

The church administration said that the carriage was not the same one used during the annual Nazarene feast on January 9.

Fullon added that they will also ask the assistance of the Philippine National Police to help them control the crowd during the procession.

“Hihingin natin ang tulong ng PNP sa crowd control, iba na rin kasi kapag naka-unipormado ang sisita sa mga walang disiplina (We'll seek the help of the PNP for crowd control, it's different when uniformed personnel discipline the rowdy ones,” he said. Sunshine answers issues on rift with Cesar

By Reyma Buan-Deveza

Actress Sunshine Cruz finally broke her silence and shared some of her thoughts as she virtually confirmed a rift between her and her husband actor Cesar Montano.

Cruz and Montano's separation has been the topic of blind item reports in tabloids for the past weeks. A report had even said that the couple separated last Christmas Day.

In a phone interview with Cruz, the actress calmly answered abs-cbnNews.com’s questions on the issue.

On Cesar’s denial that they are already separated

"Wala akong masasabi about that and I choose not to talk about it. Basta ako I'm hoping for the best. I have three kids with him and I'm praying that everything will be okay. You see it’s not about me of course ‘yong kapakanan ng mga bata ang iniisip ko at kung ano ang palagay naming makakabuti."

(I don't have anything to say about that and I choose not to talk about it. But for me I'm hoping for the best. I have three kids with him and I'm praying that everything will be okay. You see it's not about me, I'm also concerned with our kids' interest and with what is really good).

On leaving Cesar’s house

"My things are still there. So, hindi ko pa masasabi (So, I really can’t tell)."

On communicating again with Cesar after the December 25 separation report

"Siyempre we’d been texting, actually he was here with my step children last night.... Masaya ang mga anak ko kasi nakita nila ang kanilang father at ang kanilang mga kapatid. … I’m in my sister’s house right now."

(Of course we'd been texting, actually he was here with my step children last night.... my kids are so happy because they see their father and their siblings... I'm in my sister’s house right now).

On reconciliation with Cesar

"In time I will talk na lang pero sa ngayon respeto na lang sa mga bata because I have to protect my kids and I also have to protect my husband."

(In time I will talk but for now, just respect the kids because I have to protect my kids and I also have to protect my husband).

On third party issue involving a young Brazilian model

"I don't have anything to say. I would not talk about it anymore. I will be waiting for the right time to talk maybe there’s a time to explain my side."

On issue of jealousy

"Kasi parang ang lumalabas (Apparently what’s getting out), it's so pathetic na because of jealousy. This is not about jealousy. This is not about the girl o sinuman (or whoever). It’s not about the girl, it’s between me and Cesar."

Synopsis:
Tail-end of a cold front affecting Visayas and Mindanao.
Forecast:
Northern and Eastern Luzon will experience mostly cloudy skies with light rains while Visayas and Eastern Mindanao will be cloudy with scattered rainshowers. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon, Visayas and Eastern Mindanao with moderate to rough seas. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate blowing from the northeast with slight to moderate seas.

Weather Outlook: January 1

Much of the country is in store for at most just light passing showers with the exception of provinces in Northern and Eastern Luzon which remain under the hold of a tail end of the cold front.

That weather system can continue to draw scattered showers over Legaspi City and Tagaytay.

Meantime, beginning tonight, calm conditions can accompany travellers heading back to Metro Manila from the provinces.

The Metro and Clark Zone can enjoy mainly settled weather with just a chance for light passing showers, before showers move in on Wednesday.

Much of the central islands, including Puerto Prinsesa, Bacolod, Cebu and Tacloban is seeing ideal conditions for outdoor activity. But that might not be so for Mindanao, which can still be in for thundershowers, but there shouldn't be so much rainfall in Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga and Davao, until cloud cover builds on Wednesday.

Sunshine Cruz keeps mum on marital woes
12/31/2007 | 06:50 AM

Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz were a picture of marital bliss during the second birthday of their daughter, Angel Francesca, at the Le Salon ballroom of Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Manila, last December 1.

On Christmas day, the couple reportedly had a heated argument over Cesar's alleged affair with 16-year-old half-Filipina, half-Brazilian model Mariana del Rio. Reports claimed that Sunshine, along with their three daughters, left their Quezon City home.

And two days before new year, the marriage of Buboy and Shine, according to sources, is on the rocks. Sunshine's manager Alfie Lorenzo, in his Startalk interview yesterday, December 29, revealed: "Noong isang araw nga, tumawag sa akin si Sunshine. Sabi niya, ‘Tito, hiwalay na kami ni Buboy.' Ganoon. 'Tapos, sabi ko, ‘Ano'ng nangyari?' Sabi niya, ‘Lumayas ako kasama ng mga bata.'"

Cesar denied the separation but admitted the spat. He said in his text message to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) Editor-in-Chief Jo-Ann Q. Maglipon yesterday, December 29: "This is 1 of Shines childish reactions on things..somebody jst txtd her n poisond her mind.she overreactd n speculated wildly."

Sunshine has been keeping mum about the "separation" rumors. Even in the statement she sent to Maglipon today, December 30, at 4:16 p.m., the 30-year-old actress did not mention anything about the real deal of her marriage to Cesar.

She simply said: "Pls bear with me if I choose not to talk. I have 3 little angels na kailangang pag-ingatan sa lahat ng ito. Please pray that everything will be ok in the long run. Thanks for all the support and concern you have been giving my family. I'm still hoping and praying for the best. Thanks for your undestanding. God bless."

This is the second "separation" issue that the couple faced this year. The first erupted last June. The trigger, according to some sources, was when Buboy went to a girlie bar AirForce1 in Parañaque.

The two countered the media reports at the time. Sunshine even reacted to rumors claiming she left their house: "OA naman ang balitang naglayas ako. Unang-una, ang hirap maglayas. Saan naman ako pupunta? Oo, nandiyan ang Mommy ko, pero nakakahiya naman kung gagawin ko ‘yon. 'Tsaka, tatlo ang mga anak namin ni Buboy [Cesar's nickname]. Ang hirap na maglayas na kasa-kasama ang mga bata. Siyempre, with matching yaya pa ang mga ‘yan at mga gamit. Kaya isang entourage ang mangyayari kapag naglayas ako, di ba?"

This time, aside from "third party" angle, the sources are pointing to Shine's issue on "respect." Alfie said in the same interview with Startalk, "Nilalason ni Buboy yung utak ng mga bata. Yun daw ang ayaw niya [Shine]. Nawalan daw siya... Nawala na daw yung respeto ni Cesar sa kanya. Pati 'yung mga bata, e, nadadamay na." - PEP
