#1 â€" They don’t learn the right behavior

IMAGE SOURCE: KRIJN VAN PUTTEN VIA FLICKR

If you yell at your dog whenever they jump on somebody, for example, they might temporarily stop that behavior, but since you aren’t teaching them something to do instead, such as sit, the behavior is likely to happen again. Instead of yelling at your dog after they do something undesirable, teach them the behavior you expect them to perform instead.

5 Crucial Reasons To Stop Scolding Your Dog

by Jennifer Nelsonon

It can happen to the best of us. You come home from work and find that your dog made a mess. They wake you up in the middle of the night to bark at a squirrel. They jump on your friends every time they come to visit. Sometimes it happens before you even have a chance to think about it: you yell at your dog to discourage the behavior.

The problem is that you aren’t actually teaching your dog anything, and you might even cause long-term behavioral problems. There are much better ways to train your dog than hollering at them. Here are 5 crucial reasons to stop scolding your dog.

10. It cures everything!

If you love apple cider vinegar so much that you're using it as a salad dressing or produce topping, by all means, go for it! Vinegar contains zero calories, enhances flavor and poses a low health risk, except for GERD-sufferers. But if you're solely sipping the stuff for its purported health "benefits," science says you're out of luck â€" at least for now. Your best bet is to fill up on plant-based foods, which will provide everything you need to stay healthy.

Bottom line: Vinegar is for salads, not supplements.

http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/
#2527

9. Drinking it in the morning helps you eat less during the day.

Sorry, but nope! Delayed gastric emptying seen in the (limited) existing research on vinegar is likely caused by slower digestive enzyme activity in the GI tract. However, drinking apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach can be tough on your digestive system and cause heartburn. Steer clear of supplements, tonics and elixirs that make this hunger-killing claim, and fill up on breakfasts that combine fiber and protein instead.
#2528

8. It's packed with probiotics.

Probiotic properties of apple cider vinegar are minimal at best. That's because they're found in the "mother" of vinegars, the substrate leftover after fermentation. Since most commercially-available vinegars are highly-processed, good bacteria is hard to come by. Foods like Greek yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, miso and tempeh are all better sources with the added benefit of filling you up.
#2529

7. It wards off heart disease.

Due to acetic acid's possible link to reduced cholesterol levels, fruit-based vinegar may help prevent cardiovascular disease, especially clot formation. However, the science isn't substantial enough to make a definitive statement. Researchers don't fully understand role of polyphenols, the antioxidants found in plant-based foods that protect cells from damage.

Your best bet is adding apple cider vinegar to veggie-rich foods, which can help to bring out flavor while avoiding creamy, sugary dressings. Vinegar itself may be beneficial, but there's no solid evidence to recommend chugging the stuff just yet!
#2530

6. It kills bacteria.

Simply because "acid" is a byproduct of vinegar production doesn't mean vinegar is a germ-killer, nor does it "detox" any vital organs. The antimicrobial claims made about apple cider vinegar stem from the fermentation process. Science can point to a reduced risk of foodborne illness, not the colds, infections and stomach bugs caused by bacteria and viruses. Staying hydrated, sleeping well and filling up on veggies will stave off sickness much more effectively.
#2531

5. It helps you lose weight.

While I wish it were true, just one tablespoon, shot glass or ramekin of vinegar cannot help with weight loss! The only research linking vinegar to weight loss used a tiny sample size and poor controls. Plus, the subjects in the study were on a weight-loss diet to begin with!

The only way to shed excess pounds in a sustainable way is to fill up on veggies and fruit, cut back on saturated fat and added sugar and get movin'!

Getty
#2532

4. It lowers blood sugar.

It could help, but don't bet on it. Some research linked acetic acid with a mild reduction in blood sugar spikes after meals, slowing food's movement through the GI tract. Another proposed mechanism: Acetic acid reduces the activity of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes. However, current research relies on hyper-specific populations, small sample sizes or rats, not humans.

Diabetics should proceed with caution when using vinegar, since it may affect how much insulin is needed for a meal or snack. For the rest of us, stable blood sugar levels are linked to diets high in plant-based foods and regular exercise. A drop of vinegar won't cause significant changes.
#2533

3. It zaps fat.

Studies suggest the acetic acid in vinegar may help reduce fat production in the liver and improve blood cholesterol levels overall. The caveat: You can't exactly dunk chicken fingers in apple cider vinegar and expect magic to happen. While research on vinegar may appear promising, skipping fried, fatty foods is a well-established way to help reduce total cholesterol and improve overall health.
#2534

2. It helps digest carbs.

Sorry, but apple cider vinegar doesn't give you a free pass when it comes to bagels. One small 2006 study linked the liquid to limiting the negative effects of high-carb, high-glycemic-index meals but you should be avoiding those processed carbs anyway! You can fill up on veggies, fruit, whole grains, pulses and low-fat dairy with or without vinegar to get the same health benefits.
#2535

1. It boosts your immune system.

Using apple cider vinegar regularly may improve your health overall, but it's not for the reason you think. Made by adding bacterial cultures and yeast to apple juice, the liquid is typically used as a dressing on vegetables. It's the antioxidant compounds in the produce that actually help reduce the risk of chronic disease, including cardiovascular illness, diabetes, cancer and cognitive decline.

With that in mind, it's hard for scientists to determine the amount of beneficial antioxidants in apple cider vinegar itself. Some may be diminished during processing, not to mention unused by our bodies once ingested. Since produce, pulses, nuts and seeds provide a slew of well-established benefits, you're 100% better off getting your immune-boosting nutrients from nature's best foods, and using vinegar for dressing and dipping.

10 Apple Cider Vinegar Myths You Should Stop Believing ASAP

Unfortunately, it's not the health cure-all you think it is.

By Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN
JUL 5, 2017

Apple cider vinegar has gotten some serious hype lately for its supposed health benefits â€" some claim it reverses everything from diabetes to weight gain. Sadly, it's not that simple. While the ingredient provides plenty of pros, we'll be honest: There's no need to swallow spoonfuls every morning.

These are the 10 apple cider vinegar health benefit rumors you can stop believing in once and for all:
#2537

If you're a person who's wanted to get fit or watch what you're eating, you'll know that people love to trick you with small things that will get you "healthy" with as little work as possible. They'll swear that if you just eat all the avocados you possibly can that you'll have glowing skin. Or that if you just invest in some ridiculous health product, you'll be as fit as a weight lifter.

If we're literally just all trying to make ourselves nauseous rather than eating in moderation and moving our bodies as often as we can, is that really health?

I am all for small steps that make people feel better, but this one seems like it's not for me. I will continue to love vinegar more than most human beings, but it will strictly be reserved for Italian subs and french fries.

http://www.businessinsider.com/
#2538

This got me thinking about how we think about health.

Sure, apple cider vinegar has many uses, and there is some tentative proof that it can be healthy for you, but is it really worth taking a shot of it in the morning? For me, no. Unfortunately, it took me a few days after my experiment to come to that conclusion. In fact, I was only going to do this experiment for a week, but I ended up extending to 10 days just to see if maybe I was doing something wrong.

The thing is, it felt healthy. It felt like I was doing something slightly difficult that would ultimately make me really healthy in the long run. It seemed like a shortcut that should work.
#2539

I didn't end up eating these things (well, except for some sweet potato fries) but I did find myself reaching for snacks a little bit earlier in the day and more often. This is weird, because I had always heard that apple cider vinegar could be used to suppress your appetite.

It turns out, that is only true to an extent. Experts told CNN vinegar can make people nauseous and not want to eat very much. Looks like I love vinegar so much that it just made me want to eat more. Whoops!

It didn't end up really helping or hurting my acid reflux. Truth be told, I didn't really notice much of a difference at all when taking these shots, other than a sour taste in the back of my throat for a few hours in the morning.
#2540

In terms of how it made me feel, not a whole lot changed.

I expected this shot to make me feel gassy and awful because of my acid reflux â€" and it did, but only on the first day. Aside from that, it only made one major difference.

I was starving all of the time.

Now this isn't wholly unusual. I do Weight Watchers, so it's not like I regularly stuff myself. For some reason, however, I had horrible food cravings during this experiment. I wanted french fries, pita bread, and â€" for some weird reason â€" red wine and hot chocolate mixed together. I usually crave healthy foods, but for some reason I just felt the need to pig out.
#2541

This proved to be the wrong move, because I had to let the taste sit for a while before I could take the second spoonful and chase with a glass of cold water. This was absolutely the worst thing I could have done.

If you've never tried it, apple cider vinegar has an interesting taste. Although I can eat pickles and drown salads in red wine vinegar, drinking it solo is a whole other story. It tastes like eating 5,000 savory Sweet Tarts at once, and the only way to get rid of the taste is to drown it out with something else.

After gagging a bit, I decided to dirty up a shot glass for the rest of the week for the sake of my taste buds. My boyfriend was pretty confused why my cat-themed shot glasses were piling up in the morning, but once he leaned in and smelled the vinegar on my breath, he got the picture.
#2542

This stuff is supposed to be magic. (Kristin Salaky)

So I decided to take a shot every day for breakfast for a week. I'd done this once or twice before, so I sort of knew what to expect. But ingesting it religiously, I had been assured, would altar my eating habits, clear my skin, make me invincible to bear attacks, and essentially change my life for the better.

On day one, I eagerly doled out my shot.

According to the internet, you are supposed to drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in the morning for maximum results. I, not thinking very clearly at 6 a.m., decided to take each spoonful individually rather than measure both into a shot glass.
#2543

I unapologetically love vinegar. My father raised me to believe that french fries should be smothered in malt vinegar, not ketchup. My best friend and I once ate so many salt and vinegar potato chips that it literally burned an indent in her cheek. I have about four different types of vinegar in my cabinet at home. It's an obsession.

And, given the alleged benefits of apple cider vinegar, I thought it was an obsession that could make me healthier.

Although I primarily use it to make salad dressings and in my face masks, ingesting apple cider vinegar is supposed to help with suppressing appetite, improving digestion, and issues associated with acid reflux, the last of which I have.
#2544

I tried the viral health hack where you take a shot of apple cider vinegar every day â€" here's the verdict

I thought this stuff would make me healthier, but it didn't seem to do much. (Kristin Salaky)

Apple cider vinegar is often touted as something that will make you healthier.

People claim it can suppress appetite, help with acid reflux, and help your digestion.

I took a shot of it every day for 10 days.

I didn't see much of a difference.

He urged them to do all they can to promote free expression while clamping down on disinformation.

Kaye said "multistakeholderism" is the key to overcome the phenomena of fake news.

"All stakeholders should be involved in seeking solutions to disinformation and propaganda," he said.

"The challenges facing all of us concerning freedom of expression today are not insurmountable. They are daunting, it's true, but it can be medicated and addressed," he added. â€" BAP, GMA News

The media, he said, has a critical role for it remains to be the watchdog of society.

"The media should support appropriate self-regulation, strive to achieve the highest standard of accuracy. They should also include coverage of the phenomena of dissemination (of fake news) and propaganda...in line with their watchdog role in society," Kaye said.

State actors, he said, should also avoid disseminating and spreading fake news, and instead promote accurate information about government, public health, and the environment, among others.

Private sectors, such as social media and search engine companies, also have a significant role in the fight against fake news, because it is both a technology and human problem.

Kaye said that while fake news and propaganda has been a problem for generations, it has recently become a "serious public policy concern" and a "global issue."

"The problem has been with us for generations... What's new about the digital age is the speed, distance, seeming authenticity it can be achieved by spreading it," Kaye said.

"It is fast becoming a serious public policy concern," he added.

However, he said fake news can be mediated and addressed, but stakeholders must actively work together against this problem in order to address it.

Media urged to strengthen role as watchdog against fake news, propaganda â€" UN special rapporteur

November 17, 2017 10:58pm
By JESSICA BARTOLOME, GMA News

A United Nations special rapporteur urged the media to cover the dissemination of fake news to help address the issue.

Professor David Kaye, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, made the comment in a video message during the Regional Fake News Conference in Dusit Thani Manila on Friday.

"Journalists should cover fake news stories, because of their relevance. And they, and fact-checking organizations should address disinformation and propaganda, not only after the fact, but they should develop tools of debunking (fake news)," he said.

The forum was held by human rights advocacy group Centerlaw and the Advocates for Freedom of Expression Coalition-Southeast Asia (AFEC-SEA).

Soldiers And Cats Who Became Best Friends Overseas

By Dainius

“Tour pets” are not uncommon in times of war. From my own experience serving in Afghanistan, many platoons and sections adopted local dogs or cats to have as mascots, or for the moral support that they provided. In our case, we took in a puppy named “gougoune,” which is a colloquial term in Quebec for “flip-flop” sandals. Every night, one of us would take turns caring for her.

This list of soldiers and cats who became friends overseas is a touching reminder of humanity, demonstrating that even during times of war, there are moments of beauty and kindness.

It’s usually associated with a buildup of fatty deposits inside the arteries â€" known as atherosclerosis â€" and an increased risk of blood clots. It can also be associated with damage to arteries in organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys, and eyes.

While CVD is prevalent, it can often largely be prevented with a healthy lifestyle, starting with adding nuts to the shopping list.

Cashew, anyone?

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/
#2571

Emilio Ros, MD, of the endocrinology and nutrition service at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, reviewed the results and said the study really does seem to suggest that nuts protect against heart disease.

“Raw nuts, if possible unpeeled and otherwise unprocessed, may be considered as natural health capsules that can be easily incorporated into any heart-protective diet to further cardiovascular well-being and promote healthy aging,” he said.

The NHS in the U.K. says cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels.
#2572

The large-scale research, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, collated the medical history, lifestyle, and illnesses of 210,000 female nurses and male health professionals for up to 32 years via self-administered questionnaires every two years.

The analysis revealed a link between the quantities of nuts consumed and cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.

Those who ate five or more servings of nuts a week had a 14 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 20 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease.
#2573

The same amount of peanuts â€" which are technically a legume â€" also reduced the risk of the diseases by 15 percent and 13 percent.

And eating walnuts, specifically, one or more times per week reduced coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease risk by 21 percent and 19 percent.

Commenting on the findings, lead author Marta Guasch-Ferre, PhD, a nutritionist at Harvard University, said: “Our findings support recommendations of increasing the intake of a variety of nuts, as part of healthy dietary patterns, to reduce the risk of chronic disease in the general populations.”

Eating a handful of nuts a couple of times a week can seriously cut the risk of heart disease

Need a snack? Instead of reaching for the Tootsie Rolls, experts suggest nibbling nuts to keep hunger at bay.

That’s because eating a handful of nuts a couple of times a week can cut the risk of heart disease by almost a quarter, research has revealed.

A study of more than 210,000 people found that those who ate walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, and pecans two or more times a week were 23 percent less likely to develop coronary heart disease and 15 percent less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease.

In the words of Dr. Selmer:

“When your dog is sick, he’ll typically make it obvious that something is wrong, but your cat? Cats â€" still genetically wild animals â€" are different. They’re still hard-wired to hide their problems, illnesses and injuries. This can make it tough for cat owners to figure out when their beloved feline is in pain and/or is not feeling well.

If your cat shows any changes in his or her behavior, it may be an indication of pain or that your cat is not feeling well. Here are some more subtle examples to look out for:

1. Laying in a different space
2. Appetite changes, either decreased or increased
3. Drinking behavior changes
4. Changes in the litter box
5. Using a chair to jump onto the table, instead of jumping straight up

Cats are creatures of habit, so if they start doing something differently, it is an indication that you should make an appointment to see your veterinarian."

Dr Patterson told the program the stranded passengers would have had 'no where to go'

'Once the story got out, it would have been an intense experience to be here as those events were going on,' Dr Patterson said.

Scientists from both Australia and the Netherlands don't know just how many bodies are buried under the sand on the island.

As the 60 Minutes crew filmed the segment, another skeleton was unearthed, making it the fifteenth body to be found.

Those responsible for the bloody massacre were eventually discovered and hanged.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
#2578

Dr Al Patterson (pictured right with journalist Liam Bartlett) is working with a team of scientists from Australia and the Netherlands

As they waited to be rescued for over three months, men, women and children were massacred on the island in what archaeologists have since dubbed 'a real life Lord of the Flies'.

Many of the women were raped repeatedly as the mutineers slaughtered all across the island.

Scientists are still uncovering the bodies of 125 men, women and children who made it to the tiny stretch of land, part of the Abrolhos Islands in the Indian Ocean.

In a 60 Minutes segment on Sunday night, the story of the Batavia and her slaughtered crew was detailed.
#2579

A replica of the Batavia ship which crashed into a reef off the Western Australia coast

The commodore took the side of the hierarchy and the mutineers were arrested.

Rebels were rounded up, questioned and tried in a formal court on a nearby island.

To get truth from some of the mutineers, water torture was used, and the sentences were carried out.

Some were hanged, some had limbs cut off and some were taken to Batavia to be executed there.
#2580

Those murdered were dumped in mass graves.

On a separate island, a member of the Batavia's hierarchy had established a much more civilised living arrangement, with fresh drinking water and ample food supply.

As the murderous clan and the merchants waited for a rescue ship - one group wanted to be rescued to continue their lives, the other wanted to commandeer the vessel to live a life of piracy on the seas.

Once again, with a raging battle about to erupt, violence was cut short as the Sardam rescue ship appeared.
#2581

Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East Company (VOC).It was built in Amsterdam in 1628

They were raped and murdered by the gang in scenes described by experts as the real Lord of the Flies - a brutal novel which focuses on a group of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous and brutal attempt to govern themselves.

The killings took place on a place we now know as Beacon Island and it became clear barbaric rebels were not reserving their executions for those who threatened them.

Journals from chiefs revealed the mutineers killed more than a hundred people in the month of July.

Among the brutal deaths registered was a baby murdered to stop it crying, a boy decapitated to test the blade of a sword and a family of six butchered for no reason whatsoever.
#2582

Scientists are still uncovering the bodies of 125 men, women and children who were slaughtered on the island nearly 400 years ago

With the mood on both sides of the dispute reaching boiling point on June 4, 1629, the Batavia hit Morning Reef, some 60km off the coast of Western Australia.

There was a desperate scramble as survivors attempted to reach land.

Around 40 people drowned in the chaos, but worse was to come on the small islands surrounding the shipwreck.

After one of the rebels assumed control of the remaining survivors, he and a loyal gang of killers rounded up anyone deemed to be a threat to their power.
#2583

On October 28, 1628, the Dutch East India Company gave the green light for a ship to set said from Texel in the Netherlands to Batavia, which we now know as Jakarta in Indonesia.

There were 316 people on board, including regular families and children, and soldiers guarded the spices and silver being transported.

Tensions were heightened on board the Batavia, which was named after its intended destination, with a mutiny planned to turn the vessel into a pirate ship.

In order to hatch a take-over plan, rebels sexually assaulted the daughter of a wealthy merchant to provoke a reaction from the hierarchy.
#2584

At last, the true story of Murder Island: Bodies of hundreds of men, women and children who were massacred by mutineers are still being found 400 YEARS after their ship crashed into an uninhabited island

In 1629, Batavia crashed off coast of Western Australia on its way to Indonesia

Rebels on board already planned to stage a coup and hierarchy feared mutiny

As tensions escalated, the ship crashed and survivors spilled out onto islands

Mutineers then started killing off anyone who posed a threat to their power

Scientists are still recovering the 125 bodies of those murdered by a brutal gang of rebels hell bent on becoming pirates after their ship crashed into an uninhabited island 400 years ago.

Beacon Island, later named Batavia's Graveyard and nicknamed Murder Island for the atrocity that would occur, was the site of Australia's first and biggest massacre.

Centuries after the shipwreck of the Dutch sailing ship on a tiny Western Australian island, the story of what happened to those who swam ashore remains largely untold.

In fact, he claims "being shipwrecked was the least of their worries."

Over 100 survivors of the shipwreck were slaughtered after turning on each other while awaiting rescue on the island, according to 9 News.

In total, 125 men, women and children are believed to have died on the island over the course of three months.

The massacre has been compared to "a real life 'Lord of the Flies.'"

A Dutch ship was allegedly sailing along when it was blown off course, leaving more than 300 passengers and crew members stranded in Western Australia.

Forty people aboard the ship reportedly drowned trying to swim for shore.

In the "60 Minutes Australia" clip, Bartlett reveals that those who survived weren't home free.
