Tequila could become a thing of the past as Mexico appears to be turning its back on the cactus-like plant from which the country's national tipple is made, in favour of more profitable crops.

>Spaghetti is the latest victim of biofuel boom
> Biofuels 'could cause serious water shortages'
> Biofuels: the sweet smell of power

America's increasing demand for ethanol has caused global commodity prices to spiral upwards and encouraged farmers of blue agave, the origin of tequila, to switch to more profitable cash crops, such as wheat and corn.

Mexican farmer harvesting agave which is used to make tequila

Corn currently sells for a record 18 cents a pound as US motorists turn towards biofuels in an attempt to avoid the soaring cost of petrol - now $2 a gallon.

In contrast, agave, which was worth approximately 80 cents a pound six years ago, now sells for less than two cents.

As a result, farmers have taken the difficult decision to let their agave crops burn to clear the way for more lucrative crops.

One farmer, Miguel Ramirez, told USA Today: "I'm going to get out of agave completely. Corn is where the money is now."

Mexican officials say farmers planted up to 35 per cent less agave in 2007 and expect the trend to continue this year.

Agave takes six years to grow and therefore any shortage in supply cannot be properly filled when the realisation takes hold.

Raudel Lopez Sandoval, a Mexican farmer, said the boom-and-bust nature of the tequila industry was a problem.

Speaking to USA Today, he said: "You tend agave for six years, and then the price drops on you or you get hit with a freeze or something.

It's a lot of investment to lose whereas beans grow fast."

Before you start munching on a snack, ask yourself what's in the food you've chosen. Is it loaded with sugar? If it is, think again. Another choice would be better for your teeth. And keep in mind that certain kinds of sweets can do more damage than others. Gooey or chewy sweets spend more time sticking to the surface of your teeth. Because sticky snacks stay in your mouth longer than foods that you quickly chew and swallow, they give your teeth a longer sugar bath.

Also think about when and how often you eat snacks. Do you nibble on sugary snacks many times throughout the day, or do you usually just have dessert after dinner? Damaging acids form in your mouth every time you eat a sugary snack. The acids continue to affect your teeth for at least 20 minutes before they are neutralized and can't do any more harm. So, the more times you eat sugary snacks during the day, the more often you feed bacteria the fuel they need to cause tooth decay.

If you eat sweets, it's best to eat them as dessert after a main meal instead of several times a day between meals. Whenever you eat sweets â€"in any meal or snack â€" brush your teeth well with a fluoride toothpaste afterward.

If you snack after school, before bedtime or other times during the day, choose something without a lot of sugar or fat. There are lots of tasty, filling snacks that are less harmful to your teeth â€" and the rest of your body â€" than foods loaded with sugars and low in nutritional value. Low-fat choices like raw vegetables, fresh fruits or whole-grain crackers or bread are smart choices.

Eating the right foods can help protect you from tooth decay and other diseases.

A Filipino comedian is on the cover of the latest issue of internationally renowned publication Reader’s Digest.

Michael V., of Philippine TV/Radio station GMA-7 talent was made up like an old man in Barong Tagalog in the magazines’s “5th Annual Humor Special.”

At the bottom of the cover are the words Yari Ka! which is what Michael V. exclaims at the end of every item on Bitoy’s Funniest Videos (early Saturday evenings), one of his two fun shows (the other is Bubble Gang, aired Friday nights) on GMA 7.

Michael V. is in good company in the September issue as he shares the limelight with Singapore’s Mark Lee and Malaysia’s Harith Iskander.

Did you know that Michael V.’s real name is Beethoven del Valle Bunagan?
In the article written by Mars W. Mosqueda Jr., Michael V. explained why he was named after the famous German classical music composer, “My father named me after Ludwig van Beethoven, not because we shared the same birth date â€" mine’s December 17, 1969; his December 16, 199 years earlier â€" but because my father saw a copy of Beethoven’s record in his boss’s office and didn’t know that Beethoven was a surname.

My stage name is derived from two performers I admire: Michael Jackson and Filipino singer Gary V.”

Noted for the myriad characters he plays, Michael V. said further, “Some people wonder how I can get into the different characters’ heads so easily.

The make-up and costumes help a lot. Once I see myself in front of the mirror, I can easily transform into the person I need to be. Having said that, there’s always a bold line that separates the real me from the characters that I play so when people ask me if I’m scared that I won’t be able to get back to the real me, I just laugh. I mean, I don’t go around in ladies’ dresses when I’m with my kids at a mall.”

A family of 11 Filipino physicians recently received an award from an international humanitarian-civic organization in the United States for their outstanding achivements in their fields of expertise.

The Philippine Economic and Cultural Endowment (PEACE USA) gave the 2008 PEACE USA award to the Chua family in a ceremony held last June 14, 2008 at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The ceremony honored the family of cardiac surgeon Dr. Philip Chua, his wife, retired pediatrician Farida Quiambao Isip-Chua, and their children Sheillah C. Gentile, Felipe I. Chua, Portia C. Gonzales, Rachel Chua Brown, and Emily C. Greenlee, who are all doctors.

The Chua children are all based in the US. The daughters are also married to physicians Anthony Gentile, Luisito Gonzales, Jim Brown III, and Jeremy Greenlee.

“As a Filipino, I am truly proud of this PEACE Family Award, an honor I want to share with my fellow Filipinos around the world,” Dr. Philip Chua said.

The award was presented to the Chua family by PEACE president Frank Rabadam, MD, of New York, and PEACE board director Carmelo Dichoso, MD, of Houston. PEACE USA recognizes an individual or a family for outstanding achievements in any field.

These achievements, according to the Chua family patriarch, “shows the greatness and the ideal Filipino family or Filipino leaders, whose accomplishments are truly exceptional, and are a source of pride and joy for every Filipino and for the Philippines as a whole.”

Jollibee meals can now be delivered to your doorstep in the Philippines as a gift from your tatay, nanay, ate or kuya from Hong Kong, Dubai, Rome, Paris, London, Singapore, California or Sydney.

That’s the concept of virtual pasalubong: Jollibee Yum, Champ, palabok fiesta and peach mango pie delivered to you even if she’s a thousand miles away.

While it is customary for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), Fil-Ams and other Filipinos abroad to send money, they can now surprise their loved ones back home with their favorite Jollibee meals during special occasions with the collaboration of Banco de Oro (BDO) and fastfood giant Jollibee Foods Corp.

Sharing the vision of preserving the spirit of family togetherness, BDO and Jollibee launched Jollibee Padalang Langhap Sarap, the first remittance product of its kind, which will be made available initially to Filipinos in Metro Manila and greater Manila.

OFWs can now go to any BDO subsidiary office and international remittance partners in Europe, Asia, Middle East, United States and Canada, and choose from a variety of meal and party packages to be delivered to their families and relatives in the Philippines.

BDO and Jollibee aims to preserve strong ties between Filipinos and their families in the Philippines along with the bank’s commitment to deliver fast remittances.

“As BDO recognizes the hard work and sacrifices of our unsung heroes, it also aims to break the barrier of distance by preserving family tradition,” BDO said.

About eight million Filipinos are now working abroad based on the latest data from the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA).

MANILA (Reuters Life!) - There's something brewing in Sunshine Plata's paintings. The Filipino artist uses instant coffee to paint whimsical scenes and rural landscapes on canvases that also give off the bean's earthy aroma.

Plata maximizes the monochrome medium by mixing different quantities of coffee powder with water to create contrasting shades of brown. She then uses a fixing material to ensure the paint lasts.

Initially working with oil as a medium, she switched to powdered coffee after seeing a painting with a signature signed in coffee.

"I started painting with coffee because I wanted a cheaper medium that was accessible to me," Plata told Reuters.

A tube of oil paint costs at least 500 pesos ($11), while a jar of instant coffee is only around 150 pesos ($3).

Plata was a preschool teacher with a psychology degree before she dabbled in painting almost eight years ago. She likes to draw fairies, butterflies and fish, images she says are inspired by her dreams.

And although she specializes in using coffee as paint, Plata admits she's not a java fan.

"I'm a tea addict, as a matter of fact. I don't drink coffee, because I love to sleep. If I ever drank coffee, I wouldn't be able to sleep, and it's through my sleep wherein I get my ideas and my dreams and my paintings from," she said.

Plata's paintings sell for at least $400 U.S. dollars, and the pieces are expected to have a lifetime of 75 to 100 years.

She also conducts coffee painting workshops for school children and aspiring artists. She says her work is proof that anyone, regardless of age or background, can paint with anything.

Plata's coffee paintings have been featured on U.S. television shows and were also exhibited in New York.

While the lack of color variation might put off some art connoisseurs, Plata's paintings are popular with several Filipinos.

"Even though it lacks color, it's still beautiful in its monochromatic sense," said Richelle Ramirez, a coffee-loving university student who visited a recent exhibit.

ROME (Reuters) - An Italian priest who had planned an online "pageant" for nuns has suspended the project, saying he was misinterpreted and had no intention of putting sisters on a beauty catwalk.

"My superiors were not happy. The local bishop was not happy, but they did not understand me either," Father Antonio Rungi told Reuters by telephone from his convent in southern Italy Tuesday.

"It was not at all my intention to put nuns on the catwalk," said Rungi, a priest of the Passionists religious order, speaking from his convent in the town of Mondragone.

Rungi's idea appeared in newspapers around the world after he wrote of a contest for nuns on his blog, called by some "Sister Italy 2008."

"It was interpreted as more of a physical thing. Now, no-one is saying that nuns can't be beautiful, but I was thinking about something more complete," he said.

He said his concept for the contest, in which nuns would vote for themselves on his blog, would include attributes such as their spirituality, social awareness, charity and other qualities.

Rungi wrote in his blog that his intention was to show "the interior beauty" of a nun and the work she does for the Church and for society, mostly in education and health care.

"We have to draw more attention to the world of nuns, who are often not sufficiently appreciated by society," he wrote, adding that he had hoped his initiative would help boost sagging vocations to religious lie.

"Many monasteries in Italy are dying because of a lack of religious vocations," he wrote.

Rungi said he received a lot of calls of support but also many sharp emails by people who attacked him for wanting to create a Miss Italy-style event.

First came the use of prepaid mobile phone lines. Then came landline phones using prepaid technology. Lately, a petroleum company has also been retailing products to customer who have prepaid cards. Amid the economic crunch and the tough times being experienced by consumers due to high prices of petroleum, food and electricity, power retailer Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has come up with a scheme for consumers to use prepaid electricity meters.

BEIRUT - Foreign maids are dying each week in Lebanon often by committing suicide to escape bad treatment by their employers, the New York-based Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.

"Domestic workers are dying in Lebanon at a rate of more than one per week," said Nadim Houry, a senior researcher at HRW, in the second damning report since April on the working conditions of foreign workers in Lebanon.

"These suicides are linked to the isolation and the difficult working conditions these workers face in Lebanon," including financial pressure due to earning below minimum wages, Houry said in the report.

According to HRW around 200,000 domestic laborers, mostly from Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Ethiopia, are not protected by Lebanese labor laws.

Most of those who take their own lives or "risk their lives trying to escape" from the high-rise apartment buildings where they are employed, are women.

HRW said that at least 24 housemaids have died since January 2007 after falling from multi-storey buildings. "Many domestic workers are literally being driven to jump from balconies to escape their forced confinement," Houry said.

Interviews conducted by HRW with embassy officials and friends of domestic workers who committed suicide "suggest that forced confinement, excessive work demands, employer abuse and financial pressures are key factors pushing these women to kill themselves or risk their lives."

Human Rights Watch urged the Lebanese authorities to guarantee the workers "the right to move freely, to work in decent conditions, to communicate with their friends and families, and to earn a living wage."

It specifically asked the authorities to track down cases of deaths linked to suicide or other unnatural causes and "properly investigate them".

"The high death toll of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon, from unnatural causes, shows the urgent need to improve their working conditions," HRW said.

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- More than 2,000 years after they were written, the Dead Sea Scrolls are going digital as part of an effort to better preserve the ancient texts and let more people see them than ever before.

A fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls, left, as seen by a high-resolution single-wavelength infrared imager, right.

The high-tech initiative, announced Wednesday, will also reveal text that was previously not visible to the naked eye.

Over the next two years, the Israel Antiquities Authority will digitally photograph and scan every bit of crumbling parchment and papyrus that makes up the scrolls, which include the oldest written record of the Bible's Old Testament.

The images eventually will be posted on the Internet for anyone to see.

"These are the earliest copies of the Bible ever found," said Pnina Shor, head of treatment and conservation at the Antiquities Authority.

"The Bible is sacred to us and to you and to all the monotheistic religions, and therefore [the scrolls] are national treasures and world treasures, and therefore it is our duty to preserve them at least for 2,000 years more."

It is widely believed that the first set of Dead Sea Scrolls was discovered in 1947 by a Bedouin shepherd who ventured into a cave in the Judean Desert in search of a lost sheep or goat. The texts were found wrapped in linen inside earthenware jars.

Eventually, 11 caves were found to contain scrolls -- some dating back more than 2,000 years.

The texts shed light on life in the Holy Land around the time of Jesus, in the early days of Christianity and at a time of great upheaval for the Jewish people.

"They show the connection between Christianity, Judaism and how everything evolved from the God -- the God is one God," Shor said. "The scrolls are meant to bring us all together."

The thousands of scroll fragments were photographed in their entirety only once -- in the 1950s -- but some of those images have themselves disintegrated, the Antiquities Authority said.

For years, there have been complaints that only a handful of scholars have been able to examine the scrolls, The Associated Press reported.

Now, Israel has assembled an international team -- not of archaeologists and linguists, but technical wizards -- to reveal them as never before.

Their imaging of the extremely brittle scrolls will allow people to read scores of fragments that were blackened or erased over the years. Video Watch why the process looks a bit like acupuncture »

"Just by applying the latest infrared technologies and shooting at very high detail, lots of resolution, we are already opening up new characters from the scrolls that are either extremely indistinct or you just couldn't see them before," said Simon Tanner, the director of King's Digital Consultancy Services.

Tanner, who has worked on previous digital projects involving antiquities, is on a team that also includes Greg Bearman, who recently retired as principal scientist with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Bearman pioneered archaeological digital imaging and owns a company, Snapshot Spectra, that makes the imagers.

"To switch over to digital is really the way to go, and people were resistant to it initially, because it was a new way of doing stuff," he said. "They want their light table and their magnifying glass."

But with digital imaging, Bearman said, "You can see where the ink has broken away and you can see the texture of the animal skin, so you can see more detail than you can see with the naked eye."

Another benefit of the imaging process, Bearman said, is that it enables scientists to determine the amount of water present in the parchment.

That will help authorities determine whether the parchment is too wet or too dry, and enable them to keep the scrolls in conditions that are perfect for conservation.

Americans who want an even closer look at the texts will be able to do so next month, when six of the scrolls will go on exhibit at the Jewish Museum of New York, according to The New York Times.
