Today in History: November 18

* William Tell: legendary Swiss archer shot an arrow through an apple on his son's head; his life depended on success in this challenge after he defied his canton's Austrian bailiff (1307).

* time zones: US and Canadian railroad companies implemented a system of five standard time zones so that train travelers would be able to keep time (1883).

* Calvin and Hobbes: comic strip about a boy and his stuffed tiger (named for the French theologian and the English political philosopher) debuted (1985).

* Jonestown: over 900 people died from drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid â€" or through other means â€" in a murder/suicide pact led by preacher Jim Jones in Guyana (1978).

LONDON (Reuters) â€" Criminal gangs are making millions of dollars out of the H1N1 flu pandemic by selling fake flu drugs over the internet, a web security firm said on Monday.

Sophos, a British security software firm said it had intercepted hundreds of millions of fake pharmaceutical spam adverts and websites this year, many of them trying to sell counterfeit antiviral drugs like Tamiflu to worried customers.

Tamiflu, an antiviral marketed by Switzerland's Roche Holding and known generically as oseltamivir, is the frontline drug recommended by the World Health Organization to treat and slow the progression of flu symptoms. GlaxoSmithKline makes another antiviral for flu, known as Relenza.

Sophos said many of the gangs behind the sites were based in Russia and the top five countries buying fake Tamiflu and other medicines on the internet were the United States, Germany, Britain, Canada and France.

Sophos spokesman Graham Cluley said a "worrying trend" toward stockpiling Tamiflu had already been seen in Britain -- Europe's worst-hit country in the H1N1 pandemic so far.

"As more and more cases of swine flu....come to light, it is essential that we all resist the panic-induced temptation to purchase Tamiflu online," he said.

"The criminal gangs working behind the scenes at fake internet pharmacies are putting their customers' health, personal information and credit card details at risk."

The Geneva-based WHO, which declared H1N1 swine flu a pandemic in June, updated its guidance to doctors last week to say that antiviral drugs should be given even before tests conclude that an at-risk patient has the pandemic virus.

Sophos said criminal gangs were operating medicines websites branded as the "Canadian Pharmacy" to try to appear genuine.

It said its research showed that on one network operated out of Russia, called Glavmed, it was possible to earn an average of $16,000 a day promoting pharmaceutical websites.

"But the criminals can be members of more than one affiliate network, and some have boasted of earning more than $100,000 per day," it said in a statement.

The pandemic H1N1 flu virus has now spread to 206 countries since it was first discovered in March. There have been more than 6,250 deaths to date, mostly in the Americas region, according to the latest WHO toll.

KOKONOGI, Japan â€" A blood-orange blob the size of a small refrigerator emerged from the dark waters, its venomous tentacles trapped in a fishing net. Within minutes, hundreds more were being hauled up, a pulsating mass crowding out the catch of mackerel and sea bass.

The fishermen leaned into the nets, grunting and grumbling as they tossed the translucent jellyfish back into the bay, giants weighing up to 200 kilograms (450 pounds), marine invaders that are putting the men's livelihoods at risk.

The venom of the Nomura, the world's largest jellyfish, a creature up to 2 meters (6 feet) in diameter, can ruin a whole day's catch by tainting or killing fish stung when ensnared with them in the maze of nets here in northwest Japan's Wakasa Bay.

"Some fishermen have just stopped fishing," said Taiichiro Hamano, 67. "When you pull in the nets and see jellyfish, you get depressed."

This year's jellyfish swarm is one of the worst he has seen, Hamano said. Once considered a rarity occurring every 40 years, they are now an almost annual occurrence along several thousand kilometers (miles) of Japanese coast, and far beyond Japan.

Scientists believe climate change â€" the warming of oceans â€" has allowed some of the almost 2,000 jellyfish species to expand their ranges, appear earlier in the year and increase overall numbers, much as warming has helped ticks, bark beetles and other pests to spread to new latitudes.

The gelatinous seaborne creatures are blamed for decimating fishing industries in the Bering and Black seas, forcing the shutdown of seaside power and desalination plants in Japan, the Middle East and Africa, and terrorizing beachgoers worldwide, the U.S. National Science Foundation says.

A 2008 foundation study cited research estimating that people are stung 500,000 times every year â€" sometimes multiple times â€" in Chesapeake Bay on the U.S. East Coast, and 20 to 40 die each year in the Philippines from jellyfish stings.

In 2007, a salmon farm in Northern Ireland lost its more than 100,000 fish to an attack by the mauve stinger, a jellyfish normally known for stinging bathers in warm Mediterranean waters. Scientists cite its migration to colder Irish seas as evidence of global warming.

Increasingly polluted waters â€" off China, for example â€" boost growth of the microscopic plankton that "jellies" feed upon, while overfishing has eliminated many of the jellyfish's predators and cut down on competitors for plankton feed.

"These increases in jellyfish should be a warning sign that our oceans are stressed and unhealthy," said Lucas Brotz, a University of British Columbia researcher.

Here on the rocky Echizen coast, amid floodlights and the roar of generators, fishermen at Kokonogi's bustling port made quick work of the day's catch â€" packaging glistening fish and squid in Styrofoam boxes for shipment to market.

In rain jackets and hip waders, they crowded around a visitor to tell how the jellyfish have upended a way of life in which men worked fishing trawlers on the high seas in their younger days and later eased toward retirement by joining one of the cooperatives operating nets set in the bay.

It was a good living, they said, until the jellyfish began inundating the bay in 2002, sometimes numbering 500 million, reducing fish catches by 30 percent and slashing prices by half over concerns about quality.

Two nets in Echizen burst last month during a typhoon because of the sheer weight of the jellyfish, and off the east coast jelly-filled nets capsized a 10-ton trawler as its crew tried to pull them up. The three fishermen were rescued.

"We have been getting rid of jellyfish. But no matter how hard we try, the jellyfish keep coming and coming," said Fumio Oma, whose crew is out of work after their net broke under the weight of thousands of jellyfish. "We need the government's help to get rid of the jellyfish."

The invasions cost the industry up to 30 billion yen ($332 million) a year, and tens of thousands of fishermen have sought government compensation, said scientist Shin-ichi Uye, Japan's leading expert on the problem.

Hearing fishermen's pleas, Uye, who had been studying zooplankton, became obsessed with the little-studied Nomura's jellyfish, scientifically known as Nemopilema nomurai, which at its biggest looks like a giant mushroom trailing dozens of noodle-like tentacles.

"No one knew their life cycle, where they came from, where they reproduced," said Uye, 59. "This jellyfish was like an alien."

He artificially bred Nomura's jellyfish in his Hiroshima University lab, learning about their life cycle, growth rates and feeding habits. He traveled by ferry between China to Japan this year to confirm they were riding currents to Japanese waters.

He concluded China's coastal waters offered a perfect breeding ground: Agricultural and sewage runoff are spurring plankton growth, and fish catches are declining. The waters of the Yellow Sea, meanwhile, have warmed as much as 1.7 degrees C (3 degrees F) over the past quarter-century.

"The jellyfish are becoming more and more dominant," said Uye, as he sliced off samples of dead jellyfish on the deck of an Echizen fishing boat. "Their growth rates are quite amazing."

The slight, bespectacled scientist is unafraid of controversy, having lobbied his government tirelessly to help the fishermen, and angered Chinese colleagues by arguing their government must help solve the problem, comparing it to the effects of acid rain that reaches Japan from China.

"The Chinese people say they will think about this after they get rich, but it might be too late by then," he said.

A U.S. marine scientist, Jennifer Purcell of Western Washington University, has found a correlation between warming and jellyfish on a much larger scale, in at least 11 locations, including the Mediterranean and North seas, and Chesapeake and Narragansett bays.

"It's hard to deny that there is an effect from warming," Purcell said. "There keeps coming up again and again examples of jellyfish populations being high when it's warmer." Some tropical species, on the other hand, appear to decline when water temperatures rise too high.

Even if populations explode, their numbers may be limited in the long term by other factors, including food and currents. In a paper last year, researchers concluded jellyfish numbers in the Bering Sea â€" which by 2000 were 40 times higher than in 1982 â€" declined even as temperatures have hit record highs.

"They were still well ahead of their historic averages for that region," said co-author Lorenzo Ciannelli of Oregon State University. "But clearly jellyfish populations are not merely a function of water temperature."

Addressing the surge in jellyfish blooms in most places will require long-term fixes, such as introducing fishing quotas and pollution controls, as well as capping greenhouse gas emissions to control global warming, experts said.

In the short term, governments are left with few options other than warning bathers or bailing out cash-strapped fishermen. In Japan, the government is helping finance the purchase of newly designed nets, a layered system that snares jellyfish with one kind of net, allowing fish through to be caught in another.

Some entrepreneurs, meanwhile, are trying to cash in. One Japanese company is selling giant jellyfish ice cream, and another plans a pickled plum dip with chunks of giant jellyfish. But, though a popular delicacy, jellyfish isn't likely to replace sushi or other fish dishes on Asian menus anytime soon, in view of its time-consuming processing, heavy sodium overload and unappealing image.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. â€" The Colorado parents accused of pulling a spectacular hoax by reporting their son was aboard a runaway balloon have pleaded guilty to charges that could bring some jail time and probation.

Richard Heene pleaded guilty to knowingly and falsely influencing Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden, a felony. Mayumi Heene pleaded guilty to knowingly filing a false report with emergency services, a misdemeanor.

Richard Heene told judge Stephen Schapanski he understood that he could have to pay restitution for the costs incurred by public agencies because of his actions. Local and federal authorities spent at least $62,000 pursuing the balloon and searching for 6-year-old Falcon after it landed.

Schapanski told Mayumi Heene that her plea doesn't automatically prevent any action by federal authorities regarding her immigration status; she is a Japanese citizen. Her attorney, Lee Christian, acknowledged that was the case but said avoiding a trial could reduce the consequences.

Chief deputy district attorney Andrew Lewis told the judge that prosecutors always intended to charge Mayumi Heene with a misdemeanor based on her cooperation with authorities and what he called her lower level of culpability in the incident. He insisted prosecutors never used the threat of deportation in her case â€" contrary to what Richard Heene's attorney David Lane has said.

Christian said the possibility of going to trial and risking a felony conviction was one of "many reasons" Mayumi Heene wanted to plead guilty.

Prosecutors would like the Heenes to serve some time in jail, but the final decision will be made by Schapanski at a Dec. 23 sentencing hearing.

In the meantime, Lane said Richard Heene intends to seek employment with trips to New York and California and Mayumi Heene plans to accompany him. The judge adjusted their bond to allow them to do so, as long as they report to probation services within seven days.

Lane told the judge that Richard Heene has an "employment opportunity" in New York. Lane declined to elaborate as he left the courtroom, and Heene waved off questions.

Business associates of Richard Heene said before the balloon incident Richard Heene was trying to pitch a TV series based on science. The Heenes are amateur storm chasers and had twice appeared on the ABC reality show "Wife Swap."

Mayumi Heene allegedly told investigators the balloon launch was a hoax aimed at promoting a possible reality television show. Neither she nor her husband discussed their intent during the court hearing and neither apologized.

After the hearing, when asked whether he had anything to say to the people who helped look for his son, Richard Heene didn't respond.

THE SM Retail Group received of the Best of the Best Award during the 2009 Retail Asia-Pacific Top 500 Awards held recently at the COEX Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul, Korea, highlighting its leadership not only in the Philippines, but also in the Asia-Pacific region.

This was the second consecutive year that the SM Retail Group was named the Best of the Best, and the sixth year in a row that SM won the Gold Award as the Philippines’ Top Retailer for the sixth year in a row. The SM Department Store also received the Country Award for the Philippines by the Federation
of Asia Pacific Retailers Association during the closing ceremonies of the 14th Asia Pacific Retailers Convention and Exhibition also in Seoul, Korea.

Spearheaded by Retail Asia, the prestigious Singapore based magazine five years ago, the Top 500 ranks retailers in 14 Asia-Pacific economies on sales turnover and sales productivity. The ranking continues to highlight companies that have become the movers and shakers in the region’s retail sector.

Drawing from Euro-monitor Intl’s research and analysis of the retail industry around the world, analysts in the 14 Asia-Pacific economies featured did research for the 2008 edition. The latter included Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The top three retailers from each of the countries in the Asia-Pacific region were awarded gold, silver, and bronze awards during the event; and the Best of the Best were selected from the Gold Awardees Local retailers cited included Mercury Drug and Rustans, which won the Silver and Bronze Awards, respectively, for the Philippines.

“The 2009, Retail Asia-Pacific Top 500 Ranking was a pleasant surprise in that the combined sales turnover of the region’s top 500 retailers has expanded instead of contracting in the wake of what has been widely regarded as the world’s gravest economic turmoil,” says Steven HL Goh, executive chairman of Retail Asia Publishing Pte Ltd. “Total sales turnover grew at a sterling double digit rate of 13.7 percent.”

“Their ranking is a testimony to their success in the leadership and dominance in their respective markets,” he continues. “They fully deserve all the accolades and praises for their accomplishments. Well done!”

“As a retailer, change is in our DNA,” says Teresita Sy-Coson, president of SM’s non-food retail group. “We always innovate and make everything new and exciting.”

SM, which has 36 branches nationwide, has become part of the lives of many Filipinos, not only because of its merchandise but also because of its one stop shopping experience and service.

Health and Food / Foods that keep you young
November 14, 2009, 01:19:43 AM
EATING right isn’t just about weight lossâ€"the nutrients you take in can have a serious effect on how you think, feel, and look!

By eating the right mix of fruits and vegetables, proteins and fats, and you’ll feel healthier, more energetic, and happier than you have in years.

In the book “Eat This, Not That,” which was written by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding, there is mention of a list of eight foods that can help keep you young. The excerpt appeared on Men’s Health. Here a partial list.

• Green tea. You can substitute green tea with yerba mate, white tea, oolong tea, and rooibos (red) tea.

Literally hundreds of studies have been carried out documenting the health benefits of catechins, the group of antioxidants concentrated in the leaves of tea plants. There is one published by the American Medical Association in 2006. The study followed more than 40,000 Japanese adults for a decade, and at the seven-year follow-up, those who had been drinking five or more cups of tea per day were 26 percent less likely to die of any cause compared with those who averaged less than a cup.

• Garlic. You can substitute garlic with onions, chives, or leeks.

Allicin, an antibacterial and antifungal compound, gives garlic a myriad of health benefits. The chemical protects the plant against pests, but inside your body, it fights cancer, strengthens your cardiovascular system, decreases fat storage, and fights acne inflammation.

To activate the most allicin possible, you have to crush and mince the garlic as finely as you can. Be sure not to overcook it, as too much heat will render the compound completely useless (and your food totally bitter).

• Grapefruit. You can also use oranges, watermelon, or tomatoes.

In a study of 100 obese people at the Scripps Clinic in California, those who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost an average of 3.6 pounds over the course of 12 weeks, and some lost as many as 10 pounds. The study’s control group, in contrast, lost a paltry 1/2 pound. But here’s something even better: Those who ate the grapefruit also exhibited a decrease in insulin levels, indicating that their bodies had improved their ability to metabolize sugar. (However, ask your doctor about this if you are diabetic before you gorge on grapefruit.)

• Bell peppers. You can substitute carrots, sweet potatoes, watermelon

All peppers are loaded with antioxidants, but none so much as the brightly colored reds, yellows, and oranges. The range of benefits provided by these colorful pigments include improved immune function, better communication between cells, protection against sun damage, and a diminished risk of several types of cancer.

LAJAS, Puerto RicoThe Philippines and Puerto Rico share a common history that diverged after their postcolonial period. Both were Spanish colonies handed to the United States after the signing of the Treaty of Paris on Dec. 10, 1898.

The Philippines went on to become an independent republic while Puerto Rico maintains its US commonwealth status, giving them a measure of autonomy but as an American protectorate.

This shared history somehow created quite a similar passion for a lot of sporting events, notably cockfighting, basketball, and boxing. (Puerto Ricans love baseball too, a sport that has not taken a hold in the Philippines. The New York Yankee catcher Jorge Posada is from Santurce, Puerto Rico). It is in this light that the Pacquiao-Cotto
fight, La Pelea el Año, is the most-anticipated bout from fans across the islands of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Like the Philippines, Puerto Rico is a global boxing powerhouse that ranks third in the number of world champions produced. Wilfredo Gomez, who beat Gabriel “Flash” Elorde twice in the 1960s when the Flash went up in weight, held the record for the most title defenses in the super bantamweight division and for the most successive knockouts by a titleholder.

Gomez, in an El Nuevo Dia interview, remembered Elorde as a “strong and hardhitting puncher” like Pacquiao although the latter is more aggressive and has a left-handed
stance. Gomez considered his 1964 visit to the Philippines as very good and maintained that he is enamored by the Filipinos’ sense of hospitality.

“If I were to be reborn as a boxer, I would move to the Philippines,” Gomez said in that interview.

For many Boricuas (as Puerto Ricans refer to themselves here), Cotto represents what is best of contemporary Puerto Rican boxing. Cotto is a boxing prodigy from the town of Caguas who won a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

He began his professional career then at the age of 21. In 2004, he defeated Kelso Pinto to win the WBO junior welterweight division. He also held the WBA welterweight division before surrendering the belt to Antonio Margarito who knocked Cotto twice in the 11th round.

Cotto rebounded from the loss by capturing the vacant WBO welterweight belt after a lopsided victory over Michael Jennings who was pummeled in five rounds with Cotto’s signature left hook bombs.

Boxing pundits here however are well aware of Pacquiao’s advantage in this fight. Jorge Perez, a sports columnist of El Nuevo Dia, compares the Filipino boxer’s combination of velocity and power as hurricane-like and that if Pacquiao imposes his speed on Cotto and delivers a series of combinations every time he goes in, then
most likely he will win in a fashion similar to how Bernard Hopkins won against Tito Trinidad.

A boxing expert, Margaro Cruz of Puerto Rico, remarked that Pacquiao is a spectacular fighter.

“If Cotto does not come out 100 percent prepared for the fight then he will surely lose,” he said.

Even Hector Camacho, the legendary Puerto Rican fighter, said in the Manila Times interview that Pacquiao will stop Cotto because of the Filipino’s speed and unorthodox boxing style.

The Puerto Rican boxing fans however are sure of Cotto’s victory.

In El Nuevo Dia’s online poll of 20,863 respondents (as of Nov. 11), 86.8 percent believe that Miguel Cotto will win compared to a measly 13.2 going for Pacquiao.

In my personal interviews with Puerto Ricans, they all agree that Cotto has an advantage because he is bigger and got more power punches but Pacquiao is going to be a tough fight for him.

A boxing fan, Juan Romero, wrote to El Nuevo Dia saying that Cotto had defeated equally fast fighters like Paul Malignaggi, Zab Judah, and Shane Mosley, a master of the jab.

He remarked that “Pacquiao has a hard time fighting aggressive punchers and is unable to fight when pressed. I think when he feels Cotto’s punches, he will have to go backwards. On the other hand, Pacquiao is underestimating Cotto and has had problems in training. I will bet on my countryman and am betting a case of beer.”

The megafight also brought to attention Filipinos living on the island. In the Nov. 8 issue of El Nuevo Dia, a story on the family of Edgar Guerzon, a biologist who married Francelin, a Puerto Rican microbiologist, occupied a two-page spread on the newspaper.

The news feature relates the couple’s love story and their opinion on the coming fight. Francelin, who hails from Dorado, is not a big boxing fan but she wants Cotto to win. Edgar, on the other hand, is a Pacquiao fan and has already taught their two-year old daughter, Gaby, to chant “Pacquiao!”

That story in El Nuevo Dia served as a venue for Filipino expats to connect with each other. After a series of e-mails with Edgar Guerzon, my family is set to join a Christmas party for the very few paisanos in Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile while Christmas is not yet around, we all will be glued to the TV on fight day. Like Edgar and Francelin, the outcome of the fight is not that important compared to the sense of solidarity that all Filipinos and Boricuas feel during the fight, and more importantly, the communitas that we all will share after the blood and gore is over.

Philippine Business News / Manzano is Lakas bet for VP
November 14, 2009, 01:12:20 AM
MANILA (Updated) -- An actor and game show host has formally agreed Friday to be the running mate of Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, the administration bet in 2010’s presidential election.

Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno announced that Lakas-Kampi-CMD has picked actor Edu Manzano to be Teodoro’s vice presidential candidate.

"The person who has accepted the challenge of standing beside Secretary Teodoro in the quest to become the next president of the Republic of the Philippines and the next vice-president of the Republic of the Philippines, no other than former OMB chairman Edu Manzano," Puno announced.

Puno, who took the credit of persuading the actor-politician to accept the offer, made the surprise announcement at a press conference in Shangri-La Makati Friday.

Manzano admitted that he had been discussing with Puno on his possible tandem with Teodoro over two months ago.

Manzano is the former chairman of the Optical Media Board (OMB), the anti-piracy arm of the Arroyo administration.

Teodoro said he is happy with Manzano's decision, acknowledging Puno's efforts and getting them together.

He said aside from him and Manzano's being products of the De La Salle University (DLSU) school system, they also do not carry any "excess baggage".

Teodoro, prior to his appointment as defense chief, was a former congressman of Tarlac. Manzano, on the other hand was a former vice mayor of Makati City.

The 54-year-old Manzano resigned from the OMB in August to focus in his advocacy against child pornography and prepare for his 2010 plans. He is one the founders of the non-profit organization Ako Mismo.

Manzano, Eduardo Lorenzo Barrios Manzano in real life, was born in San Francisco, California but took his elementary education at DLSU where he graduated in 1969 before returning to the United States where he joined the US Air Force at age 17 and served for four years.

In his return to the country, he joined the local entertainment industry in 1979 and later married actress and now Batangas Governor Vilma Santos but were divorced years later.

Santos was among those initially considered to be Teodoro's runningmate but she declined to run for reelection as Batangas governor.

Apart from movies and television sitcoms, he likewise hosted late night talk shows and game shows. He also previously served as president of the Kapisanan ng mga Artista sa Pelikulang Pilipino.

Meanwhile, Lakas-Kampi secretary general Gabriel Claudio said party officials are happy with the Teodoro-Manzano tandem believing that they have a good geographical match up with their standard bearer representing Luzon particularly Tarlac and his runningmate representing Visayas particularly Iloilo.

Claudio, who admitted that Manzano's popularity, being from the entertainment industry, will be an asset, was an original Lakas member.

He said Manzano ran and won the vice mayoralty race in Makati under Lakas, and later ran for mayor- also under Lakas- but lost to Jejomar Binay who continues to serve as Mayor.

In 2004, he was named chairman of the Videogram Regulatory Board which later became the OMB.

He was supposed to run for senator in 2007 under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats but backed out because he was financially unprepared to mount a nationwide campaign.

Claudio said there are now concerns about his loyalty to the party citing that reports of his supposed plans to join the Liberal Party and the Partido ng Masang Pilipino are just rumors.

The nominations of Teodoro and Manzano as the party's presidential and vice presidential bets are expected to be ratified and formalized during the general assembly and national convention of the Lakas-Kampi at the Philippine International Convention Center on November 19.
