Calape - Bohol / Re: Something about Calape, Bohol
June 05, 2008, 01:50:16 PM
Gipulihan og Pahinungod, which is too generic kay almost all festivals pahinungod man jud na.  Calape is also known for its special torta and kinatloan. Pang-export!  My other favorite is tinunlob, which is hilaw nga sab-a cut into chips and sun-dried. The dried chips are submerged in boiling sugarcane juice, tinuhog daan sa tukog. Karon kay wala na may katubhan sa Mandaug, kamay (muscovado) na lang ang gigamit.  That's why pula na ang mga tinunlob sa Calape. Sa una, light-colored, morag plastic-coated ang hitsura. Ug mas lami. Processing the tinunlob this way is a distincly Calapenhon heritage. Mabalik pa kaha ni?

Who's Who of Bohol / Re: Meet Rico Cruz .....
June 05, 2008, 12:43:02 PM
I know this guy. Very intelligent, unassuming, "kengkoy", and a born leader. This low-key inventor of biodiesel was a schoolmate of mine at ViSCA. Let me just correct the article particularly the statement about ViSCA becoming Leyte State University in 1984. Our alma mater became LSU only recently (early 2000s). It is now Visayas State University. Some Boholanos in ViSCA (name retained as equivalent of a barangay, as in VSU, ViSCA, Baybay, Leyte) include Dr. Oscar B. Posas (Loon; former dean of the College of Agriculture); Prof. Thelma C. Zafra (Clarin; Director, VSU Folkloric Dance Troupe); Dr. Justiniano Lopez Seroy (Loon; former head of the Department of Arts and Letters); Bert Cagande (Duero; staff of the Physical Plant Office); Dr. Ma. Juliet Poquita Cañete-Ceniza (Clarin; Director, Institute of Tropical Ecology); Dr. Remberto Andoy Patindol (Batuan; head of the engineering and applied math department); Nazario Sinon (Cortes; researcher of the National Abaca Research Center); and MANY MORE.  One of the school's alumni is Dr. Marife Corre - Veldkamp (TOBAW awardee, like Dr. Rico O. Cruz). She is a native of Alicia and now based in Germany as a soil scientist.

Jun Ayag deserves the nomination. The first time I met him in 1975, during the first meeting of Bohol's first batch of Kabataang Barangay municipal presidents, I knew he would make it big in his career. He was in fact the most eloquent among us. Too bad, he was chosen right away to chair the election committee, which meant that he could not run for provincial KB president. Well, history has judged Jun as a source of Boholano pride.

She is Priscilla Richards, a columnist of Bantay Balita, married to a Boholano seaman.

Actually, the names in this list are Loonanons or have Loonanon lineage.  The trivia questions were used during an inter-school contest held in Loon during the culmination of National Arts Month (February 2008). Prior to that there was an exhibition of their works (scripts, books, paintings, records, gowns, etc.) that was mounted at Loon's Center for Developments in Culture, Heritage and the Arts (Charts).  The event hoped to inspire the young Loonanons to become achievers in the future. I hope this will also inspire other Boholanos to do some research on their local sources of pride.
