Jesus Heals the Leper â€" Mark 1:40-45

Q. Visualize condition of the Leper.

    - Rejected by family, friends, community
    - Outcast from the community and city
    - No one would have touched him for days. If anyone touches him, he will also become unclean.
    - Leprosy is not something, you can romanticize. It is one of the most hated and rejected diseases. (Check out Jesus healing the Disabled Man at Bethesda)
    - He would need physical, social, spiritual healing.
    - His self-esteem would have been lost.
    - According to Moses’ Law, the leper has to pass through at least 14 days of ‘cleansing’ process before he can enter the city and see Jesus.

Q. What does his request say about his state of mind?

    - The leper was desperate and downcast. In Jesus, he saw his last rescue!
    - His lack of confidence in himself â€" “If you are willing, you can make me clean!”
    - This man would have tried everything, he could, to cure himself. But nothing could cure his decaying body.  In Jesus, he saw hope, a healer, savior who can help him out of this condition. And so he came to him kneeling and beseeching.
    - It is out of such state of mind of helplessness and self-pity, he cried out. “If you are willing, you can heal me.”
    - I believe that in the Kingdom of God, this is your qualification, when you realize that you are nothing in yourself, but a helpless person, who desperately needs a healer and Savior.

What was Jesus’ response to the leper?

    - He was moved by pity, filled with compassion.
    - He stretched out his hands and touched him! People around him would have been shocked to see that!
    - “How can he touch him? He would also be ‘unclean’.” Some might have whispered!
    - There is a reverse phenomenon here, Jesus’ touch can cleanse the ‘unclean’.
    - I believe that even Jesus’ touch would have healed his soul. For what seems like a simple gesture by Jesus, was a great expression of comfort and acknowledgment, as if Jesus is saying, “I love you and care for you despite of your wounds and disrupted body and soul.”
    - Jesus healed his body and soul.
    - I am not going to focus today on this man’s failure to follow Jesus’ warning. I guess his joy was too great to be contained to himself. His actions hindered Jesus’ public ministry.

Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew â€" Matthew 1:18-25 | Bible Study

Observations:

    1. Fulfillment of the prophecy (Isaiah 9:6-7, Isaiah 7:14)
    2. It seems like Joseph is the chief character (primary focus) in this passage, Mary played a passive role in this passage. Luke on the other hand, goes into details about Mary and her own journey through this. (Luke 1: 26-56)
    3. The birth of Jesus, the Messiah was anything, but an ordinary event. It wasn’t quiet, peaceful time as sometimes, nativity scenes today depict. Even before, the birth of Jesus, Joseph & Mary, his parents went through a lot.

Q. What can you learn about Joseph?

    a. Joseph was righteous man.
    b. He was considerate and compassionate to Marry, his fiancee. When he heard about Mary, he decided to divorce her privately, in spite of disappointment and heart break.
    c. He was obedient to the voice of God.
    d. He must have very clear, powerful revelation from God.

1 Corinthians 2:16
16... we have the mind of Christ.

“Oh dear, my memory is not as good as it used to be. I must be getting old.” Have you heard that before? Maybe you have even said it yourself a couple of times! But who says that as you grow older, you are supposed to forget things?

When the late Reverend Kenneth E Hagin was in his eighties, he was still healthy and strong. This amazing man of God would run around the platform as he preached. And those who have heard him preach would tell you that he had an amazing memory with which he could recall specific details such as the day of the week that a specific date fell on and even the time. Even at that age, the man’s memory was superb!

He once shared how he had started to forget things when he was in his fifties. He had read a medical journal which said that every day millions of cells in our brains die. He didn’t realize it, but those words got into his spirit and he started to forget things.

So he asked the Lord, “What is happening to me?” And the Lord said, “You read that article and you believed it.” He repented and asked the Lord what he should do. The Lord said, “Confess My Word. My Word says that you have the mind of Christ, and the mind of Christ never forgets.” He started to confess that he had the mind of Christ and that was how his memory remained sharp for the rest of his life.

My friend, the Word of God says that you have the mind of Christ. The mind of Christ is not old, slow or forgetful! I don’t care how old you get. You don’t have to become forgetful. Don’t believe and confess what medical science or your friends say. Believe and confess the Word of God which brings life.

The power of life and death is in your tongue. (Proverbs 18:21) So use your tongue for life. Don’t sit around saying, “I am getting old and forgetful.” Say, “I have the mind of Christ. My mind is sharp and quick because it is the mind of Christ!” Believe it, confess it, and see your thinking and memory live up to it!

- Daily Grace Inspiration

So very true! "My Mind is sharp and quick because it is the mind of Christ!" Thank you for sharing this, Ma'am. :)

John’s Mission

John’s mission can be summed up by one word, “preparer.” It was his happy chore to prepare a people for the coming Messiah. Both Isaiah and Malachi had announced that he would “prepare” the way for the coming of “Jehovah” – a firm affirmation, incidentally, of the deity of Jesus.

The angel Gabriel had informed Zecharias that his son would be instrumental in turning many unto the Lord, going before his face, making ready a people prepared for him (Lk. 1:16-17).

Zecharias himself prophesied that John would be called “the prophet of the Most High” who would “go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways” (Lk. 1:76).

And an inspired writer asserts that John came from God in order to “bear witness of the light,” i.e., Christ (Jn. 1:7-8).

The fact that the birth of Christianity was such a resounding phenomenon, impacting the ancient world tremendously, and echoing marvelously across the centuries, is, in some measure, a commentary on how well John accomplished his mission.

Bible Study / Who Is John the Baptist?
February 21, 2011, 04:08:53 AM
John’s Background

John was born to aged Jewish parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth, who were of a priestly family (Lk. 1:5). Interestingly, Elizabeth was related to Mary, the mother of Jesus (Lk. 1:36). This devout couple lived in the “hill country” of Judea (Lk. 1:39), perhaps Hebron, a priestly city of the region.

Luke has a wonderful summary statement of the character of this Hebrew couple. “And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless” (1:6).

On the occasion of Zacharias’ exercise of his duty of burning incense in the temple at Jerusalem (a once-in-a-lifetime event for a priest), the angel Gabriel appeared to the elderly gentleman, informing him that his prayers had been heard, and that his wife would bear a son (1:13). One must necessarily infer that Zecharias had prayed for such in earlier times, though Elizabeth was barren, and both of them now were advanced in age (1:7).

Clearly, John’s conception was miraculous; incidentally, he was about six months older than Jesus (1:26). It was foretold that this child would be filled with the Spirit of God, even from his mother’s womb, and that he would be reared under the strict code of the Nazirite (cf. Num. 6:1-21), an indication of the solemnity of his role in preparing the way for the world’s Redeemer.

The Scriptures are silent as to the deaths of John’s parents â€" though legend has it that Zacharias was slain by Herod the Great, forcing Elizabeth to flee with her babe into the wilderness area of Judea. Luke does say of John: “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel” (1:80). This desert (or deserted) area “stretches from Jerusalem and Bethlehem eastward some 20 miles down to the Jordan River and the Dead Sea”; it is “a barren region of rugged hills and valleys” (Earle, 30).

1 Kings 3:16-28

16 Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.

19 “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my sonâ€"and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”

22 The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.”

But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king.

23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’”

24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”

26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!”

But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”

27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.”

28 When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.

A very good question. If the man was innocent, would he have reacted in such a way such as suicide? Ikaw, Isles, if you were charged with tax evasion and were called to the Philippine Tax Court, I'm sure you would hire a good defense attorney, present your case, and point out every single economic activity and taxes paid so as to clear your name in the court of Law.

Hypothetically speaking, if you were charged with tax evasion, and were really innocent. Would it be practical, proper to jump of a cliff to your death?

I think not.

Ponder on it, my dear.

Only a guilty conscience would drive one to find such an end a 'way out'. Luoy pood.

it looks like you have changed your mind along with a change of heart, after this:  Suicide is an unpardonable Sin. His soul is now burning in eternal fires of hell. (lorenzo's judgment)

yes, his judgment is impeccable and just, thank you.

what the...!@#?  heavens, don't you dare expect the four horsemen of the apocalypse astride arabian horses to stop at your front yard and come knocking at your door.

1. Mary of Magdalene ran to Jesus, and followed her Lord and Savior. Served Him and believed in Him. Salvation on High. Whatever sin she had before died with her old self. She was born new, in spirit and in faith with Christ. She is a model Christian. Saved through faith and through observance of holiness. Did Magdalene return back to her sins after her salvation?

2. Please read 1 Corinthians Chapter 3, and Revelations as well as the same passage from 1st John.

3. Revelations is a prophecy of the Apocalypse by St. John of the Divine. It is the foretelling of the things to come. Do you not know that Christ will soon come again to judge the living and the dead? Do you know that when He comes in Glory again for the 2nd time, His judgment will be final.
As was prophesied, so shall it be...

Why do you think there are frequent occurrences of Our Mother Mary in the world telling and reminding us all to repent of our sins and to not despair but to ask for forgiveness from her Son? Time is coming soon..

23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. 25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 26 For “the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscienceâ€" 29 I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?

31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God.

10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. 11 To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, 12 and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.

16 Do you not know that you  are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. Hi Doll.

Starting a bible study is a good idea. It is a good way to learn more and build a strong foundation with God. I would suggest you start reading the bible with Mark or Matthew because these books provide a good background on the biography of Jesus Christ and will give you an understanding of what the books in the old testament are for, and the coming of Christ. And His Message.

Start with Matthew or Mark. Then finish the new testament accordingly. Then you can go back and read Old Testament.

Good luck with your study. If you want, you could even talk with us here on biblical questions. I myself am a student of the Bible.

God Bless You, Sister!

But how do we know what happen between the person soul and God before they depart from this life. We still have no way to judge what's going on. Only God know's what happen to Angelo Reyes.
As I have said before nga who know's before siya nawad an ug kinabuhi nakapangayo pa siya ug pasaylo sa Ginoo. Yes tinuod iyang giplano iyang suicide but dili gihapon ta ka judge nga tua na siya sa hell kay ang Ginoo ray nasayod sa tanan.

Raquel,

We can trust in the Righteousness of God's Judgments and in His all-knowing nature. To Him there is no hiding anything, no sin that is hidden, no feigning innocence. God The Father had already condemned the World after the fall of Man. Through His mercy and Loving nature, he gave us , undeserving children, a chance of possible salvation. Through no merit of our own, but through His Mercy, He sent His Only son, Jesus Christ Lord, into the world. So that those who choose Him, and believeth in Jesus Christ will not see death but see Life.

Sometimes, there are actions, that are the antithesis of God's Love and Mercy.

God Bless all of us. So that we may be strong in this life and worthy of the Promises of Christ in the world to come.
We all must fight. Fight the Good Fight and not despair when life throws us challenges and difficulties.

There is a verse from Acts Chapter 14, Verse 22 that I would like to share with you:
Strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said.

As well as from Philippians Chapter 1 Verse 29:
For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for Him.

The point that I'm trying to make here, my dearest, is that to suffer and experience hardships in life, as cruel as may be, is a blessing. As they say, Gold is only purified in fire. So too is our faith. Faith is purified, tested, and strengthened only through difficulty. They are not meant to crush us to the point of despair and our surrender in life. No, it is meant to give us a spirit of strength, and a powerful faith in Jesus Christ's presence , unmovable presence in our lives. We , as Christians, are to fight the good fight. And to never surrender.

Remember our patriarch, Peter, Christ's 1st apostle and 1st Pope of the Church. He never stopped doing what he had to do, even when all was dim. He was arrested and condemned to death in Rome for the crime of preaching Christ's Good News to the Romans. Did you know what he did while the Romans were crucifying him? Aside from suffering, he was nailed to the cross, but he was also Preaching. He did not stop preaching to the Romans, even as the guards were crucifying him upside down, he was preaching to them. Telling them to repent of their sins. Until the last drop of blood and his last breath was taken from his old, beaten down body, until his spirit was called back to The Lord.

His life is an example of Fighting The Good Fight. Not giving up. We suffer here in Earth for Christ, so that we may be worthy of His Promises in Heaven.

So suffering should be accepted. Not evaded.

Raqs, I got moody blues after the birth of my kids. Knowing that my body is trying to adjust with new hormones coming in and out as what Lorenzo explained in his medical parlance.
If you are a true believer in God, there is a conflict. You want to end all and at the same time you pray not to succumb to this temptation. I think I was lucky to have had jesuit confessor who have given me spiritual advices when trying times like this happens.
I was devastated a few months ago, learning that a good friend of mine in Davao City with 5 kids, an alcoholic husband who left her for a younger woman and also found out that her 15 year old daughter is pregnant, commited suicide by hanging herself in front of her kids. Traumatized ang mga bata, ang akong pangutana nganong walay nakatambag or nakatabang?

Manang Tess,

Please accept my condolences to your friend who recently passed. I do hope that her family , her children, and friends find strength through such difficult moments. May God surround them with His all-encompassing Love and Strength in such difficult times.

Raquel,

During my clinical rounds sa hospital, I have seen and treated patients that are suicidal, attempted suicide. I've had a patient who was admitted to the ER because he took all of his father's metformin pills (all 100 or so pills), he was rushed to the ER and our staff intubated him with charcoal. luckily he was stabilized. The patient was young, no more than 20 years. I took his H&P , and even gave him a mental exam. Everything checked out, there was no signs of altered mental status. These are what we call chronic suicidal types. They have a history of suicidal tendencies, and will try multiple times until they do end up killing themselves. Patients like him have complete control. Their frame of mind is there, they know what they are doing, but they are doing / attempting it anyways.

Then we have patients who have paranoid schizophrenia, acute manic depression, anxiety attack with manic psychosis. Patients like these are known to hurt themselves because they have a severely altered mental status. Many of them are unable to differentiate what is real and unreal. Many of them hear voices, see things, experience delusions, fictional persecutory syndromes , which manifests because of their manic psychosis. Many of them end up killing themselves by drowning, shooting themselves, even hanging themselves because of a severely altered mental status. They have no control, they have already lost sense of reality.

As for your cousins. It could have been possible that their post partum blues led to an acute mental status change, and outright manic episode, possibly even brief schizotypal psychosis.

I am very sorry that you had to experience this.

Best,
Lorenz

I was 5 years old when I left Philippines. However, in that span of 5 years, i was already molded in my Boholano identity. My yaya, Arsing, used to climb our farmland trees in Valencia so she could procure these 'star fruit' for me and my sister. It was a treat that we got when we were not misbehaving. hahaha.

Yaya arsing would get 5 of these things. Wash them. Then cut them in horizontal portions. lami kaayo ni i paris sa asin. especially the ones that are aslum. lami na iparis sa asin.

sometimes galing, mo paris mi ug lemonsito ug asin. lami jamo.

Poems and Poets / Re: Making Peace
February 20, 2011, 09:00:21 PM
Sometimes, peace is necessary
sometimes, peace is impossible

The pride is the very obstacle of peace
and enemies are built, made, in such ways.

In the end, the burning poison lies in the heart
of the one who denies peace.

The hurt within the heart
the contempt building slowly
like a cancer spreading to every
corner of his being.

It is pride that prevents peace.
It is pride that drives the same men to loneliness
and total depravity.

We can only pray for them.
Truly.

ah, the hypocrite
ah, the self righteous one
ah, the one who demands satisfaction

yet, he who once declared war on the one who he hates now
yet , he who torments
yet, he who tormented
the very being who he hates now

oh the irony of such situations.

make comments,
make fun of others,
hurt others,

but unable to dish the same payback.

ah the irony

of the true hypocrite.

7 Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.
8 They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
9 King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon.

She was sick with the flu early in January. I stayed up to nurse her, took her temp every hour, check her pulse, and make sure she drank fluids. I did not leave her side that night. Unfortunately, the next day i was struck with her flu. We both were sick.

So the next 4-5 days, we both laid side by side in my bed. Taking care of each other.

its amazing what love will do to you.

besides the rising temperatures, our coughing, the plus side was seeing her beautiful brown eyes every time i opened my eyes.
