Winnie Monsod: "Follow-up question nalang po ano, ha? Ay kung ganoon pala ang istorya, bakit bumaba pa ang mga nurses na-employ sa abroad, kasi hindi sila qualified? In other words, if it's only a matter of investment, bakit po hindi sila ma-employ employ? At bakit po nag-resign ang technichal nursing education committee, at tsaka nag-resign after only 7 months in office? Do you think they just did not understand?"

Cynthia Villar: "No, yung pag-reresign po ni [Fr. Rolando V De la Rosa] is a personal quarrel with the owner of a school. Medyo personal po yun. Pero yung amin po, ay sinasabi po namin sa kanila na actually, hindi naman kailangan ang nurse ay matapos ng BSN kasi itong ating mga nurses, gusto lang nila maging Room Nurse. Sa America or sa other countries, ano lang sila, 'yung parang mang-aalaga. Hindi naman sila kailangan ganoon kagaling kasi sa ibang country..."

the transcript of that interview:

Ang bottom line is that walang nasara na eskwela. And as a result, nag-resign po si Chairman Fr. Rolando Dela Rosa, nag-resign ang buong technical committee on nursing education. Ngayon, ang question ko, it seems nag-side po kayo sa side ng business, sa mga owners ng school. At tsaka hindi niyo pinakinggan 'yung mga kailangan magawa para sa mga nursing students na nawalan na ng pera, hindi naman sila pwedeng pumasa. Now how, Cong. Villar, can you reconcile itong parang seeming disconnect between 'yung desire ninyo to help the poor at tsaka 'yung pagpanig niyo sa mga owners ng mga educational institutions na gustong isara ng technical nursing committee at tsaka 'yung CHED?"

Cynthia Villar: "Maraming salamat, Mareng Winnie. I want to explain that situation to you. Hindi naman ganoon ang istorya noon. Ang nangyari noon, binigyan nila ng permit yung mga schools to open, ng CHED... Tapos gusto nila ipasara, nakapag-invest na yung mga may-ari ng schools sa mga kanilang facilities. And then, sinasabi nila na kaya daw nila gustong ipasara dahil walang tertiary hospital, kasi sa mga nursing school to, na where they can train. Ang sinasabi namin noon, hindi naman po kami kumokontra sa CHED, ang sinasabi namin, kasi tinignan namin 'yung syllabus, yung mga courses na kunin nila, and then nakita namin na after lang sa third year kailangan nila yung tertiary hospital so ni-request namin na hindi nalang ipasara yung pre-nursing, 'yung first two years..."

Treatment of obesity in cats

Weight loss is something which requires close veterinary supervision. If it is done too quickly it can lead to hepatic lipidosis, which is life threatening. Therefore NEVER attempt a weight reduction diet on your own.

Increase exercise:  There are plenty of interactive toys on the market which will encourage your cat to exercise.

Decrease caloric intake: There are prescription diets on the market specifically for cats, your veterinarian will be able to recommend the right diet for your cat. As stated above, it is now well known that many dry foods contain excessive quantities of carbohydrates which can lead to obesity. So switching to either canned or raw food should be discussed with your veterinarian. Weight loss needs to occur gradually to avoid hepatic lipidosis.

No treats: It's easy to slip the odd treat to your cat, but this needs to be stopped completely.

Feed 4-6 small meals per day instead of filling the bowl & leaving it down for your cat to graze on.

If the cause is medical & not diet related, treating the condition should hopefully resolve the obesity.

What will my vet do?

Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination of your cat. He/she will also want to run blood tests to rule out a medical cause of obesity such as an under active thyroid (hypothyroid).

How can I tell if my cat is obese?

It is always best to ask your veterinarian if he/she believes your cat is obese. Cats come in all shapes & sizes & therefore it is difficult to determine a standard weight which covers all cats & their differences. For example, a Singapura would be expected to weigh less than a Maine Coon.

However, a rough indicator is to feel along the side of the cat. You should be able to feel the individual ribs.

Stand over the cat, you should be able to see a waist, and have an hourglass figure.

There is a noticeable bulge on either side of the tail head

What are the causes of obesity in cats?

The most common problem is over feeding. If the calories consumed exceed calories burned then the cat will put on weight.

Dry food diets are extremely popular these days & can lead to obesity. The problem lies in the fact that the cat by nature requires a high protein diet & most dry foods are high in carbohydrates. Cats synthesize protein & fat to use as energy, carbohydrates are converted to fat.

Ageing - As the cat moves into it's senior years it's metabolic rate slows down, joints may become more painful & the senior cat will be less active. A slowed down metabolic rate & decrease in activity can both lead to obesity in cats.

Obese Cat (Fat Cat) - Signs, Causes & Treatment

Obesity is a serious problem in cats which can lead to premature death. Sadly it is the most common nutritional disorder seen in cats. Approximately 40% of cats in the USA are obese.

A cat is considered to be obese if it's weight is around 20% over the ideal weight.

The fattest cat in history recorded by Guinness World Records is Himmy from Australia, who weighed 21.3kg (3st 4lbs).

But the category was later scrapped amid concerns it would encourage over-feeding of pets.

Potosyap... :P

really?

Tiddles of Paddington Station

One of the most famous fat cats was Tiddles, a 32-lb. cat who lived in the ladies' bathroom at Paddington Station, London.

Tiddles was adopted in 1970 as a stray 6 week old kitten by lavatory attendant June Watson. He lived dined on chicken livers, lambs' tongues, kidneys, rabbit or steak brought in by his admirers and had his own personal fridge. Tiddles continued to grow in girth and received fan-mail from around the world as well as appearing in news reports. His weight was due to overeating, but vets' attempts to put him on a diet failed (largely thwarted by titbits from admirers). Tiddles easily became 'London Fat Cat Champion' in 1982 at 30 lb (13.6 kg). He was put to sleep in 1983 after vets found fluid round his lungs. Tiddles had essentially eaten himself to death - killed by kindness - and photos show a grotesquely overweight and sad-looking cat, immobilised by his own girth.

But several nurses took to Villar's facebook fanpage their sentiments.

"Hope I'll be given the chance to take care of you to make you feel and realize the we nurses deserve respect and honor," said Nelia Panuayan.

Quei Canlas Vitangcul added: "The purpose of time pressure on debate is that it takes the very core of your SENSES and INTELLECT. Too bad you lack the latter."

Cristy Capili-Bunag also said: "Mabuti pa si Pres. Obama mataas ang pagkakilala sa mga Filipino Nurses.....pero itong Aleng ito na kapwa nating Pinoy....mababa ang pagkakilala sa ating mga Nurses. Hanep ka talaga Aling Cynthia Villar."

Rage and explanation

Villar issued a statement on her Facebook fanpage after her answer went viral on social networking sites.

"The issue was really beyond me. I just interceded as chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education. I have no power neither over CHED nor the nursing schools. As I said, my conciliatory efforts were overtaken by eventsâ€"the charges filed by the schools against CHED officials," she said.

"The 30-second limit for me to answer the question posed on the news program was too short to give the complete details surrounding the issue. I hope that this statement will clarify the issue. I am sorry if it has created confusion. Thank you," Villar added. The Facebook statement, even the fanpage, were however no longer available by 5:00 pm Sunday.
#24538
Villar was the chair of House Committee on Higher Education, which stopped a government agency from suspending 23 nursing schools in 2005 to 2006.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) was trying to address poor training that students get from low quality nursing schools.

She argued it was unfair for the 23 nursing schools to be suspended after investing on its facilities, which CHED earlier found lacking of tertiary hospitals where students can train.

"Tiningnan namin yung parang syllabus at yun bang mga courses na kukunin nila at nakita namin na after lang sa third year nila kailangan yung sa tertiary hospitals," she explained.

"So ni-request lang namin na hindi ipasara ang pre-nursing, ying first two years," she noted.
#24539
The economist asked Villar to substantiate her desire to help the poor when she allegedly sided with the owners of nursing schools accused of providing low-quality education to students.

"How can you reconcile the seeming disconnect [between] 'yung desire ninyo to help the poor at saka yung pagpapanig niyo sa mga owners ng mga educational institutions na gustong isara...," Monsod asked Villar.

To which Villar initially responded that CHED already issued permits for the schools to open and that the owners have already invested in nursing equipment.

He has long harbored an interest in trying his hand at acting, he said.

Reagan will take a harder look at his future, he said, after getting more established in his current job. He wants to take time, he said, to enjoy “this blessing.”

“I’m just glad I found this place,” he said. “I’m glad they found me.”

He’ll have more time to think, he added, after all the publicity dies down.

“Art said it will probably be a week, maybe 10 days,” Reagan said. “And that will be it.”

Papa Roux, located at 8950 E. 10th St., is about three miles from Reagan’s home. The other job would have been nearly 10 miles away, Bouvier said.

http://www.indystar.com/
#24547
He says he hopes he can help others the way Bouvier has helped him.

“Art says ‘Pay it forward,’ and I’m starting to believe in that,” Reagan said. “He’s paying it forward, and I’m paying it forward. It’s become a great life lesson for me.”

He credits his dad, Gregory Reagan, with instilling his work ethic.

“He owned a paint company for five years,” the younger Reagan said. “I watched him working his fingers to the bone. Every day.”

Reagan remains murky on long-range career plans but said he wants to get serious about building a future.

“I’m planning on going to college,” he said. “For what, I have no idea right now.”
#24548
For Bouvier, the avalanche of publicity is a godsend for his business â€" but one for which he was not prepared.

“It’s a bit overwhelming,” he said.

In addition, Bouvier said he believes he has a whole staff of employees with work ethics similar to what he saw in Reagan. He hopes those employees realize he admires their character just as he admires the character of his newest hire.

The new job -- and attention that has accompanied it â€" are a welcome change of fortune for Reagan, who bounced around several area high schools before dropping out and getting his GED after his mother died. She was 39. He has spent time recently living with friends but hopes soon to afford an apartment near Papa Roux.
#24549
In case you missed it earlier this week, Reagan’s path to notoriety started when Art Bouvier, owner of Papa Roux, spotted the young man Friday walking across his parking lot. Reagan asked Bouvier how far it was to 10th Street and Sherman Drive â€" a destination about six miles away.

Bouvier learned the young man was walking all that distance in the ice and slush to report to a job interview. He was vying for a minimum-wage job at a thrift store. Impressed with the teen’s work ethic, Bouvier immediately recruited him to work at his restaurant â€" and then recounted the story on Facebook. His post went viral â€" picking up tens of thousands of “likes.”

Now Reagan is fielding calls from media types representing Good Morning America, Glenn Beck, Larry King, the New York Post and many, many others.

Papa Roux's generosity, media attention 'overwhelming' for Indy teen job hunter

Jhaqueil Reagan got job at Papa Roux after walking miles in ice storm

Papa Roux's newly hired food server finds fame: Jhaqueil Reagan, 18, Indianapolis,

saw him walking miles through an ice storm to a job interview. (Bill McCleery / The Star)

The first week of work for 18-year-old Jhaqueil Reagan at Papa Roux on the Far Eastside has been nothing like he ever could have expected.

When offered a job at the Cajun restaurant, Reagan figured his main responsibilities would involve preparing food, serving tables and cleaning up. Instead, he has spent much of his time providing interviews to newspaper and TV reporters â€" from all over the country. He has even been interviewed by European outfits such as a London newspaper.

“It’s been really crazy,” Reagan said. “I didn’t expect any of this at all. I was just looking for a job.”

Fortunately, the U.S. Navy appears to be well aware of the mistakes it has made and is trying to make up for them. The Navy sent a destroyer, the USS Stockdale, into Subic Bay early last month, and then immediately hired 15 Philippine sailors to work on it.

So, with the potentially huge threat of Chinese aggression growing in the region, the U.S. is back in the Philippines, if only because of the old adage that the enemy of one's enemy is one's friend.

And though the reunion has not gone smoothly, both sides need each other, and both sides appear to be trying to make the fragile new partnership work.

http://www.businessinsider.com/
#24567
When the USS Guardian ran aground at Tubbataha Reef, it damaged 4,000 square yards of reef. For Philippines residents, the Tubbataha Reef is not just pretty and ecologically important: It is needed for hard cash income during diving season. So this was a public-relations disaster.

The minesweeper incident was unfortunate, and then the U.S. Navy was also accused of dumping hazardous waste in Subic Bay in November, just days before their official arrival.

So only a few months after the U.S. was finally invited back to the Philippines to counter the growing Chinese threat, tensions between the U.S. and Philippines residents are already running high.
#24568
Then, this year, on January 17, just after the Navy was finally welcomed back to the Philippines, the U.S. Navy blew it again.

The Navy ran a 225-foot-long minesweeper, the USS Guardian, onto one of the world's most pristine reefs off the Philippines' coast.

Minesweepers are far more destructive to reefs than other ships because they're made mostly of pine and clad in a soft, non-resonating material to keep from triggering mines. They shred apart when they founder in the surf, like ripping silk from an ear of corn. And they also leak oil and fuel.

One morning, six days before the official start of summer in June 1991, a Philippines volcano called Mt. Pinatubo erupted with a force eight times greater than Mount St. Helens.

To make matters worse, at the time, the country was enveloped in the rain, thunder, and lighting of Typhoon Yunya.

Dozens died the first day.

U.S. dependents in Subic Bay were evacuated quickly and expeditiously, but the U.S. did not provide much help to the Philippine community. This, combined with the political situation in the Philippines at the time, turned sentiment against the United States. Shortly thereafter, the Philippines decided to end the Treaty of Friendship, Peace and Cooperation that permitted the existence of the U.S. base at Subic Bay.

By the end of 1992 the U.S. was shown the door. And the Navy was not invited back until last year, November 2012.
#24570
The Philippines is still saying publicly that the U.S. can't reclaim its old bases. But thanks to China's increasing might, the Philippines is now gradually welcoming the Navy back.

Subic Bay was not just a port in the storm of WWII. The U.S. essentially took refuge from long-time host Spain in the years leading up to the 20th century. For over four decades, the Americans called Subic Bay home, until 1943 when the Japanese took it over.

Surface Warrior

Japan held on to the port until 1945, when it fell with great fanfare to U.S. forces.

It was a homecoming, and the Philippine community in Subic Bay lived in relative harmony with U.S. Navy forces until 1991.

But that year, there was a mighty explosion.

The U.S. Navy Has Finally Been Invited Back To The Philippines To Counter China â€" And We've Already Screwed Up

Robert Johnson
Mar. 2, 2013

The U.S. Navy has recently begun moving ships to Asia to address the growing tension between China and Japan and other Asian countries.

As the Navy began this redeployment last year, most senior commanders were presumably eager to return to a port in the Philippines called Subic Bay.

Surface Warriors
USS Guardian peeling apart and a tug

The Navy's 7th Fleet had called Subic Bay home for decades before and after World War II.  But after an unfortunate incident in 1991, the Philippines kicked the Navy out. The parting was so tense that even by October 2012, the Philippines was still demurely but firmly saying:  "The US will not return to the bases they gave up in 1991."

ROME â€" The boy Joseph was seven when he promised the Christ Child in writing that he 'would always be good'. And 78 years later, it was heart-warming for the 85-year-old Pope to be reminded of the note he left on the family creche in Aschau, where the Ratzinger family lived at the time.

The note was discovered among his sister Maria's belongings during the recent renovation of his house in Pentling, outside Regensburg, which has now become a meeting-center for the Institut Papst Benedikt XVI and a small museum with a room dedicated to each of the three Ratzinger siblings.

The Christmas-wish note is now on exhibit at the Pope's birthplace museum in Marktl am Inn.

Found the picture on the Passau diocese site - on the left is Maria Ratzinger's own letter.

In sharp Sutterlin-script [an old German style of handwriting], the second-grader writes the "Dear Christ Child" what he wishes for at Christmas 1934:

Dear Christ Child!

You will soon come down to earth. You will be bringing joy to children. You will also bring joy to me. I would like a Volks-Schott, a green garment for Mass, and a Heart of Jesus. I will always be good!

With best greetings
from
Joseph Ratzinger.

what he wanted:
*Volks-Schott - a popular version of the Schott Missal, which contained all the prayers and readings for the Masses during the year
*green garment - a chasuble to wear when playing Mass
*Heart of Jesus - a Heart of Jesus icon

Left, the most famous schoolboy photo in the world was taken in Aschau when Joseph was five; right, Joseph in Aschau two years later, around the time he wrote the Christmas note.

so sorry about your friend, lorenz.  mugging as we know happens everywhere to anyone.  too bad it had to happen to her while she's in manila.  in this place where i spend most of my time nowadays, it's de rigueur for me not to wear a gold necklace or use a cell phone when i'm on the road, and to never go out alone as much as possible.

You'll feel real love for these very cute animals with fake limbs

Their limbs may be fake, but their smiles are the real deal. You just can't keep a good critter down â€" especially if you have plenty of wheels and a hot glue gun handy. You see, it's all about mind over matter. Even though these guys have come up against some obstacles, they've taken a running jump (not literally) and cleared life's hurdles. Fact is, most of them seem thrilled to still be walking (or wheeling) around, so our hats go off to these brave little soldiers who remind us that when life gives you lemons, the best thing you can do is make lemonade. Then sell that lemonade, and buy some seriously cute prosthetics.
