We have good doctors in Tagbilaran for sure. ;)

Indeed. Next to Dr. Omo's office is that of Dr. Cardino. Ayessa's brother.

Before moving to the U.K, my uncle , Dr. Renee Lucino, M.D also practiced in Tagbilaran Community, after finishing his residency at Cebu Doctor's Hospital.

It's interesting that everything is so close in Tagbilaran. And everyone knows each other.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Father please make all nations and men help in the ceasing of the bloodshed in Libya and the middle east. May all leaders of nations discern to step down when bloodshed is innevetible.

For the countless innocents suffering and dying in Libya, we pray for them to the judgement seat of Christ. Mercy on them Lord.

Holy Mother Mary, pray for us children of Eve who weep and wail in this the valley of tears. Whisper to your Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have mercy on the people of Libya.

We ask this through Jesus Chris our Lord.
Amen.

When St Luke was in trial in healing the sick,
It was you who worked in him to cure the dying
The sick, the wretched. You who strengthened him to be
A model Christian. And a follower of thee. You, the Divine Physician.

Strengthen me today, Lord.

Be merciful to those who have recourse to thee.

Hahahaha!

TRUE STORY:

In the hospital there is a room called the 'medical intern sleeping room' and 'medical resident sleeping room'. This is the place where we get to sleep if we have time to. or allowed to.

i went to bed at about 4 am (after 24 hours on-call). At about 7:30 am, a resident came in and woke me up. "Get up, Lorenzo, Code Blue! Code Blue! go to the ER pronto!"

Ako, in my dozing self, with my tattered scrubs, walked like a zombie down to the ER. Omg, i wish i could have had that 20 minutes of sleep, Fr. Roel.

Even after 2 cups of black coffee, still, i was sleepy.

After code blue, i managed to walk back to the sleeping quarters. and collapsed in the bed for a wonderful 5 hour nap. ;) ;)

By the time i woke up,...it was already 3 pm. Just in time for my night shift from 4 pm till 8 am the next morning. LOL!!!!!

This brings to mind the "hope index" that Filipinos usually top year after year. Not surprisingly, the Japanese I recently showed around our university were amazed by the radiant smiles etched on the faces of the students. It also made me wonder why the Japanese seem to be perpetually worried about the future or just about anything.

I guess when you have so little, a small gain brings a windfall of happiness. When you have so much, a small gain means nothing but a small loss brings a bigger anxiety of deeper pitfalls ahead.

This puts to light what Professor Marmot shares with us:

"Psychosocial factors are vital to health," said Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology and public health at the university and director of the International Centre for Health and Society. "In people who have their basic needs met -- clean water, sufficient food and shelter -- a crucial determinant of health is how circumstances affect the mind. That is, psychosocial factors."

Fr Jun de Ocampo, SVD, sold us a book  written by Matthew Kelly, Rediscover Catholicism.
an exerpt about God and happiness;

the modern search for happiness is governed by individualism, hedonism, minimalism and their fruits; greed, lust, laziness, gluttony, selfishness, exploitation and deception.  and yet, as these philosophies become more and more the focus of modern lifestyles, people seemed to be filled with a greater discontent and unhappiness with every passing day.

I believe God wants us to be happy. It has placed this yearning within each human heart as a spiritual navigational instruments designed to lead us to our destiny.
The philosophy of Christ is the ultimate philosophy of human happiness. It isn´t just a way of life ; it is the way of life. ( page 42).

Happiness is the basis of health. Religiosity, Spirituality is linked to the former.

Spirituality and religion, too, seem to be somehow beneficial to health. Last week at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Miami Beach, Florida, Yakir Kaufman, director of neurology services at Sarah Herzog Memorial Hospital in Jerusalem, presented results suggesting that spirituality and the practice of religion may help slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

"We learned that the patients with higher levels of spirituality or higher levels of religiosity may have a significantly slower progression of cognitive decline," said Kaufman.

The new work may help to demystify the effect of spirituality or religion.

"There is some evidence that religious beliefs help people cope with the stresses and strains of life," said Steptoe, "so this could be linked with the same processes that we have studied."

Marmot concurred. "Our research shows that psychological processes have profound biological effects," he said. "Spirituality can be one example of how the brain, acting through its connections with the neuroendocrine system, can have important effects."

May the Blood of Christ continue to wash over my family, my friends, and my own sinful self. May the Blood pierced from the side of Christ continue to envigorate my family, my friends, and my own sinful self so as to understand what is wrong and see what is sinful to God. May the water from the side of Christ purify my family, friends.

Loving Father, be merciful to me this day in work, and in the auspices of the requirements at my feet , so that I may do it accordingly and not selfishly and with no pride, but humility. So that I may walk and perform like the Divine Physician, Jesus Christ, your Son and my Risen Lord.

Loving Father, protect all my family and loved ones from the crowns of their head to the soles of their feet from all spiritual, physical, psychic and all harm, curses, hexes and negative energy that comes from negative forces. May the power of Jesus Christ, whose very name makes all angels, powers, dominions, in heaven, the earth and below tremble and bow by the knee , continue to protect my family, friends and myself.

In the Name of Jesus Christ who is my Lord and Savior. May we become more like Him. Soldiers of Christ. For His Endless Glory...

Amen.

Its good that you are direct in your inquiry, Manay Tess. It is important to treat her cataract-eye. My uncle who entrusted in me to get his medical drugs to treat his growing cataract and intraocular pressure (he was taking pilocarpine and some sort of philippine-brand for acetozolamide). When I went to Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City, i realized from his charts that he had diabetes. The introcular pressure medx were only delaying the inevetible. So i consulted my uncle to get cataract surgery. He did, in the following weeks. He told me that his vision has been substantially increased. Before, his left eye could not see, only depending on the right. Now, he enjoys vision on both eyes.

The cost for the treatment at Chong Hua was around 30,000 pesos. So anywhere around that.

Which is which Bran? Dr. Opo or Dr. Omo? Or is it Dr. Ugpo who is also popular in Tagbilaran; they were classmates with my doctor here in Slidell when they were still in Cebu.  ;)

Dr. Omo is a good doctor. When I went to visit my cousin who was being treated for bacterial gastritis , I was angry at how the attending doctor was giving my cousin, who is only 14 years old, a large dose of ofloxacin. Ofloxacin is contraindicated in young kids/ growing individuals because it can cause rhabomyolisis and tendonitis in adolescents. Dr. Omo came in and listened to my explanation and at my request, approved my objection to the attending.

He (Omo) then prescribed an antibiotic that did not have the side effects as that seen in ofloxacin. He is very reliable to ask questions to and dependable in cases of medical emergency.

Fr. Roel, buotan bitaw ni si Doc Omo. He said to me, "you are aggressive as your uncle!" hahaha. Very good doctor. May I ask, who is your doctor in Slidell?

Is it Dr. Lim?

Manay Tess,

Kining cataract, it can be due to old age (senile plaque) and or diabetes induced. If your family caretaker has diabetic cataracts, then she would require a lens implantation.

If it is indeed diabetes-induced, then she would have to make sure of the following:

1. control her diabetes

2. schedule an appointment for an ophthalmology/ surgical consultation

Try the following hospitals:

1. Chong Hua (Cebu)
2. Cebu Doctors
3. Tagbilaran Community
4. Ramiro Community
5. Gallares

~~

For a cataract surgical repair, expect around 30,000-40,000 pesos.
This is a conservative estimate.

Best of Luck!

Question: "What is the gift of speaking in tongues?"

Answer: The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went out and shared the gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages: “We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated tongues literally means “languages.” Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who does speak that language. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12â€"14, Paul discusses miraculous gifts, saying, “Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?” (1 Corinthians 14:6). According to the apostle Paul, and in agreement with the tongues described in Acts, speaking in tongues is valuable to the one hearing God’s message in his or her own language, but it is useless to everyone else unless it is interpreted/translated.

A person with the gift of interpreting tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30) could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying even though he did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues interpreter would then communicate the message of the tongues speaker to everyone else, so all could understand. “For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says” (1 Corinthians 14:13). Paul’s conclusion regarding tongues that were not interpreted is powerful: “But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue” (1 Corinthians 14:19).

Is the gift of tongues for today? First Corinthians 13:8 mentions the gift of tongues ceasing, although it connects the ceasing with the arrival of the “perfect” in 1 Corinthians 13:10. Some point to a difference in the tense of the Greek verbs referring to prophecy and knowledge “ceasing” and that of tongues “being ceased” as evidence for tongues ceasing before the arrival of the “perfect.” While possible, this is not explicitly clear from the text. Some also point to passages such as Isaiah 28:11 and Joel 2:28-29 as evidence that speaking in tongues was a sign of God's oncoming judgment. First Corinthians 14:22 describes tongues as a “sign to unbelievers.” According to this argument, the gift of tongues was a warning to the Jews that God was going to judge Israel for rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Therefore, when God did in fact judge Israel (with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70), the gift of tongues would no longer serve its intended purpose. While this view is possible, the primary purpose of tongues being fulfilled does not necessarily demand its cessation. Scripture does not conclusively assert that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased.

At the same time, if the gift of speaking in tongues were active in the church today, it would be performed in agreement with Scripture. It would be a real and intelligible language (1 Corinthians 14:10). It would be for the purpose of communicating God's Word with a person of another language (Acts 2:6-12). It would be in agreement with the command God gave through the apostle Paul, “If anyone speaks in a tongue, twoâ€"or at the most threeâ€"should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God” (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). It would also be in accordance with 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

God most definitely can give a person the gift of speaking in tongues to enable him or her to communicate with a person who speaks another language. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the dispersion of the spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:11). Just imagine how much more productive missionaries could be if they did not have to go to language school, and were instantly able to speak to people in their own language. However, God does not seem to be doing this. Tongues does not seem to occur today in the manner it did in the New Testament, despite the fact that it would be immensely useful. The vast majority of believers who claim to practice the gift of speaking in tongues do not do so in agreement with the Scriptures mentioned above. These facts lead to the conclusion that the gift of tongues has ceased or is at least a rarity in God's plan for the church today.

Question: "What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?"

Answer: The concept of “blasphemy against the Spirit” is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and Matthew 12:22-32. The term blasphemy may be generally defined as “defiant irreverence.” The term can be applied to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading things relating to God. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying Him some good that we should attribute to Him. This case of blasphemy, however, is a specific one, called “the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32, the Pharisees, having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that the Lord was possessed by the demon “Beelzebub” (Matthew 12:24). Now notice that in Mark 3:30 Jesus is very specific about what they did to commit “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.”

This blasphemy has to do with someone accusing Jesus Christ of being demon-possessed instead of Spirit-filled. As a result, this particular incidence of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today. Jesus Christ is not on earthâ€"He is seated at the right hand of God. No one can witness Jesus Christ performing a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the Spirit. The closest example today would be attributing the miracle of a redeemed person’s changed life to Satan’s power rather than to the effects of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

The blasphemy of the Spirit today, which is the same as the unpardonable sin, is the state of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in unbelief. Continual rejection of the Holy Spirit’s promptings to trust in Jesus Christ is the unpardonable blasphemy against Him. Remember what is stated in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Further on in the same chapter is the verse “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him” (John 3:36). The only condition wherein someone would have no forgiveness is if he is not among the “whoever believes in Him,” for it is he who “rejects the Son.”

Question: "Are Jews saved because they are God's chosen people? Do Jews have to believe in Jesus Christ to be saved?"

Answer: Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me” (John 14:6). The “no one” He referred to includes Jews and Gentiles. Jews are not saved because they are God’s chosen people, but because they believe in Jesus Christ as their true Messiah. There are many Messianic Jews who have accepted Yeshua (the Hebrew word for Jesus) as their Messiah.

However, there is no doubt that the Jews are still God’s chosen people. “For you are a holy people unto the LORD your God: the LORD your God hath chosen you to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers…” (Deuteronomy 7:6-8).

From all the nations and people on the earth, why exactly did God “choose” the Jews? John Gill, in his “Exposition of the Entire Bible” says the Jews were “chosen for special service and worship, and to enjoy special privileges and benefits, civil and religious; though they were not chosen to special grace…or eternal glory.” The Jews were chosen to be a blessing to all the nations of the earth (Genesis 12). The Jews were chosen to be a light to the Gentiles. So then, are all Jews “saved” just because they are Jews?

According to many modern rabbinical scholars the Christian concept of salvation from sin has no equal in Judaism. Judaism does not believe that man, by his nature, is evil or sinful and therefore has no need to be “saved” from an eternal damnation. In fact, most Jews today do not believe in a place of eternal punishment or a literal hell. The Hebrew root word for “sin” is chayt, which literally means to “miss the mark.” It is a term commonly used in archery, of one who “misses the mark” of the bulls eye. When a Jew misses the mark, and occasionally falls into the sin of failing to fulfill the laws of God, the belief is that one can obtain forgiveness through prayer, repentance and doing good deeds.

The Book of Leviticus (17:11), the third Book of the Torah, clearly gives the prescription for forgiveness. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.” The Temple sacrifice was always the centerpiece for Jewish atonement. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), the Levitical High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies in the Temple and sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice on the Mercy Seat. Through this yearly act, atonement was made for the sins of all Israel, but the Holy Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, and for almost 2000 years Jews have been without a Temple, a sacrifice, and a means of atonement.

The Brit Chadasha (The New Covenant or New Testament) teaches us that the Jewish Messiah, Jesus Christ, came to the “lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24) precisely at the time preceding the destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. “But when Messiah arrived as a High Priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more complete Tabernacle, not made with handsâ€"that is, not of this creationâ€"and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered into the Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been made common, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Messiah, Who through the eternal Spirit, offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the Living God?” (Hebrews 9:11-14).

The New Testament teaches that all of us, Jews and gentiles, have “missed the mark.” (Romans 3:23) All of us are under the consequences of sin, and “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) We are all in need of salvation from our sin; we are all in need of a Savior. The New Testament teaches that Jesus the Messiah is “the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father”, but through Him. (John 14:6) And most importantly, “there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under Heaven given among men by which it is necessary for us to be saved." (Acts 4:12).

For the Jews, Jesus the Messiah has come as High Priest, and through His once-for-all sacrifice for sin offers complete atonement to all people. For there is “no distinction” between Jew and gentile. (Romans 10:12) Yes, the Jews are God’s chosen people, and through them come the Jewish Messiah to bless all the nations of the earth. And it is only through Jesus that Jews can find God’s complete atonement and forgiveness.

While individual Jews must come to Christ for salvation, God is still not finished with Israel as a nation. The Bible tells us that in the end times, Israel will finally recognize Jesus as their Messiah (Zechariah 12:10). Jeremiah 33:8, Ezekiel 11:17, Romans 11:26 predicted that in the end times Israel would be regenerated, restored, and regathered in their homeland. This regathering already took place in 1948 when Israel was recognized as a sovereign country by the United Nations. (Please see our article on Israel’s role in the end times). Clearly, God is not finished with the Jewish people.

Bible Study / Priesthood in Judaism
February 27, 2011, 04:59:58 AM
A Kohen (or Kohein, Hebrew ×›Ö¹Ö¼×"ֵן, 'priest', pl. כו×"נים, Kohanim) is the Hebrew word for priest. Jewish Kohens are traditionally believed to be of direct patrilineal descent from the Biblical Aaron, as are modern Jews bearing the name Kohen, Cohen, Kogen or similar derivations.

The name Kohen is used in the Torah to refer to priests, both Jewish and non-Jewish, as well as the Jewish nation as a whole. During the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem, Kohanim performed specific duties vis-à-vis the daily and festival sacrificial offerings.

Today Kohanim retain a lesser though still somewhat distinct status within Judaism and are bound by additional restrictions according to Orthodox Judaism.

Miriam, the sister of Moses. I like her because she saved Moses (Exodus 2) and was the one who put him in a basket , which would later be found by Pharaoh's own daughter , who adopted Moses. Miriam played a role in Exodus and in God's promise to Israel that He would save them from Egyptian bondage.

In modern perspective, it shows one the love of an older sister. Sisters , like Miriam, played as mother-like figures. In a way, I see the similarity of Miriam and Mother Mary, who would later play a role in new testament covenant.

Miriam, like Mother Mary, was integral to Hebrew Prophesy. Both women, Miriam and Mary, had to evade the blades of evil men who wanted to deny prophetic liberation. Miriam placed Moses in a weed basket and thus made sure he was not a victim of Pharaoh's decree that ever hebrew male child should suffer death. Mother Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ Lord, evaded the conniving scheme of King Herod, who sent his soldiers to kill every hebrew baby child in the town of Nazareth for fear of the prophesy of the coming Messiah.

It is important to note that in both instances, in Moses' and in Jesus Christ's, the antagonists all failed in the end. Pharaoh Setti eventually died, and his son, Rameses II failed in keeping the Hebrews and eventually lost them to Moses' return. Egypt was humbled. In the case of King Herod, he eventually died with worms coming out of his body (as he was cursed by God, for trying to Kill THE WORD MADE FLESH). Herod's own son failed miserably in containing the Messiah and actually indirectly played a role in Salvation History. Christ was crucified , a necessary sacrificial death, in order for all of mankind to be saved, for those who believeth in Christ Jesus.

It is interesting, really, how God uses the aid of women, powerful women, in the manifestation of His Prophecies. Throughout old testament and new testament.

As a catholic, i am very foreign to the concept of speaking in tongues. Worship in Catholic Church is different as that seen in new evangelical and pentecostal worship. I have attended some pentecostal churches with friends (who were pentecostal) and invited me to worship with them. I noticed that as soon as the minister starts preaching, and the church starts singing, there are members in that church that do peculiar things.

I observed this myself. It was new to me, because its not something that I see so regularly in Catholic Church Mass.

There was one person who got up and started to raise her hands to the air, and started praying in words that were intelligible. She was praying and singing at the same time. I asked my friend, and asked her what was going on? Is this regular? My friend told me that that person was touched by the Holy Spirit..and praying and speaking in tongues.

I was shocked. But in a good and interested way. It was beautiful because I've never seen anything like that before. Then moments later, other worshipers started doing the same thing. To my surprise, my friend , herself, got up and started doing it.

My question to everyone here is, to those who are Protestant (Evangelical), and worship in a pentecostal, evangelical christian church. What happens in such an experience? Do you have control over this or is this really being touched by the holy spirit?

Salamat.

Ms. Cetas has a point. Indeed, we are reconciled with God when we declare Jesus Christ as Lord of our Lives. What is also important is that sometimes we tend to hold differences and use it as an excuse for rude behavior and belittling fellow brothers and sisters. I myself am guilty of this and reading this message allows me to realize and assess myself at times. There are times that my tongue is sharp and hurtful. I don't want this. And yes, it is true, we have to reconcile with each other and pray others be reconciled with God. God forgives those who forgives. So, time to swallow my pride and start being more forgiving with people whom I have qualms with. Let everything go. Give it all to Christ.

"I always go home," writes Foley, "because I belong there. I go to Mass because I belong there. I am a member of the Body of Christ. Even if I'm only a finger, or an eye, the Body needs what I can contributeâ€"presence, prayer, loyalty, perseverance, humor, encouragement, kindnessâ€"myself." The Mass brings together not perfectly formed saints but rather sinners struggling to open up a larger space in their lives for God's light, love and transforming grace.

How about you?

There is beauty in the Eucharistic Mass.

That tho we may fail at times, are erring in many ways, yet the Lord is there for us to turn to Him when we need Him. It teaches one a lesson of the importance of Christ's enduring Love for us. That He is there for us..no matter what. So long as we believe in Him and turn to Him..especially in our most difficult and hardest of times.

When the priest says to me after the sacrament of reconciliation, "Then I pardon you of all your sins in the Name of the Father , The Son and the Holy Spirit..."

I feel much lighter within myself. As if a huge burden was taken of my shoulders. Truly.

For the times that I could have done better in prognosing, and giving diagnosing,
forgive me.

I don't understand why there are things that require second opinion, or third opinion,
especially when it is basic text book diagnosis.

But nothing is as simple as we think it is. And i take this correction, as a lesson.

Why Lord that even with the hours that I pour into studies, that I cannot ever truly learn everything
and study something , the absolute rarest of incidence is the one that befuddles me.

For it is true, that you come to remind me that nothing is as simple as one would assume.
And that All things appropriate itself according to YOUR WILL. Not ours.

Forgive me, Father God, for my arrogance and pride at time.
Forgive me and teach me to be more humble. And to take correction more openly.

I know now that i cannot ever do it alone by myself.
I need you. Please strengthen me , Papa. You who are the fountain of all knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
Please help me, LORD.

In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.

Nowadays, I don't even have much time for church sometimes. And it eats at me sometimes. I have no time. Time is spent on work (8-10 hours) of everyday, then there are papers and reports to be written when I'm home. Then there are extracurricular responsibilities. bwaahahaha!  :P

Second Opinion.  A man runs into the vet's office carrying his dog, screaming for help. The vet rushes him back to an examination room and has him put his dog down on the examination table. The vet examines the still, limp body and after a few moments tells the man that his dog, regrettably, is dead. The man, clearly agitated and not willing to accept this, demands a second opinion.  The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat and puts the cat down next to the dog's body. The cat sniffs the body, walks from head to tail poking and sniffing the dog's body and finally looks at the vet and meows. The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the cat thinks that your dog is dead too." The man is still unwilling to accept that his dog is dead. The vet brings in a black Labrador. The lab sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, and finally looks at the vet and barks. The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the lab thinks your dog is dead too.".  The man, finally resigned to the diagnosis, thanks the vet and asks how much he owes. The vet answers, "$650.".  "$650 to tell me my dog is dead?" exclaimed the man....  "Well," the vet replies, "I would only have charged you $50 for my initial diagnosis. The additional $600 was for the cat scan and lab tests."

At high altitude, hypoxia can develop, resulting in increased circulating levels of erythropoietin. Erythropoetin will increase red blood cell production and eventually cause an adaptive polycythemia.

#24381
The prerequisite for diagnosis of bends/ bends caisson disease are :

1. breathing high - pressure nitrogen for a prolonged period of time

2. sudden decompression

Patho-physiology: The sudden decompression causes bubbles of nitrogen (emboli) in the bloodstream and tissues.

Treatment: Recompression and slow, gradual decompression.
#24382
In a hyperbaric environment breathing room air (21% O2 and 79% N2) , the partial pressure of O2 and N2 will increase in the alveoli and systemic arterial blood.T he pressure of nitrogen will also increase in other body compartments. The adverse effect of a high PO2 can be oxygen toxicity. The high PN2 can cause nitrogen narcosis, but, more important, it can lead to the bends (Bends-Caisson Disease).

Science and Research / Respiration In High Altitudes
February 26, 2011, 01:32:42 AM
At high altitudes, atmospheric pressure is reduced from 760 mm Hg of sea level. Because atmospheric pressure is a factor that determines room air and alveolar PO2 (oxygen pressure), these two values are also reduced. These two values are permanently  depressed unless enriched oxygen is inspired.

Therefore,PAO2 < 100 mm Hg, PaO2 < 100 mm Hg and low arterial PO2 will stimulate the peripheral chemo-receptors and increase alveolar ventilation.

At high altitude, then, the main drive for ventilation changes from CO2  on the central chemo-receptors at sea level to a low PO2 drive of the peripheral chemo-receptors and hyperventilation ensues.
#24385
Science and Research / Basic Pulmonology 101
February 26, 2011, 01:27:52 AM
What is the central respiratory center?

A: The medullary center. This is the site of the inherent rhythm for respiration

For spontaneous breathing, an intact medulla must be connected to the diaphragm (via the phrenic nerve). Thus a complete C1 or C2 lesion will prevent diaphragmatic breathing but not a complete C6 or lower lesion.

#24386
Physiologically speaking, we have to differentiate the difference between central and peripheral chemoreceptors because the latter differs in specificity as compared to the former.

Peripheral chemoreceptors, distinct from central , are less sensitive than the central chemoreceptors, but they still contribute to the normal drive for ventilation. These receptors, do not adapt, unlike the central chemoreceptors, which are adaptive.

By convention, under normal resting conditions and for practical purposes, the total drive for ventilation is CO2, mainly via the central chemoreceptors but with a small contribution via the peripheral.

#24387
Science and Research / The Regulation of Ventilation
February 26, 2011, 01:07:48 AM
Ventilation, particularly alveolar ventilation, is driven by the input of chemoreceptors to the central nervous system.

There are two groups of receptors and they are :

1. Central chemoreceptors

2. Peripheral chemoreceptors

Function includes:

The receptors directly monitor and are stimulated by cerebrospinal fluid and CO2. The hydration of CO2 and subsequent dissociation of H2CO3 in the CSF generates H. These receptors are  very sensitive and represent the main drive for ventilationunder normal resting conditions at sea level.

Therefore, the main drive for ventilation is CO2 (H).

His days as a member of the Philippine House of Representatives are numbered.

Sentenced on Thursday to 18 months in jail in Hong Kong for drug trafficking, Rep. Ronald Singson is preparing to resign his House seat, his father, Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson, said hours after a Hong Kong judge court pronounced the sentence.

Interviewed by the Philippine Daily Inquirer by telephone from Hong Kong, the elder Singson said his son would quit his post as Ilocos Sur’s first district representative.

“He had long thought of resigning,” the governor said. “We are just readying the documents needed.”

The elder Singson said he would personally talk with Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. on his son’s return to the House of Representatives, in which he would make arrangements before resigning.

Singson was meted out a jail term of one year and four months for bringing 6.67 grams of cocaine into the southern Chinese territory on July 11, 2010, and an additional two months for the two tablets of the prohibited narcotic Nitrazepam which he also carried.

In his ruling, which he took 45 minutes to read, Wan Chai District Court Judge Joseph Yau said the prison term should be at least two years and six months but he decided to give a “discount” by giving credit to the congressman’s guilty plea, his “positive character,” his clear criminal record, and his being a member of the House of Representatives.

It was an ironic twist to the political career of the lawmaker who a few years ago filed a bill in the House, denouncing illegal drugs as one of society’s most pernicious evils.

tsk tsk, considering China's harsh anti-drug laws, he's lucky to be spared the death sentence. one must surmise if it is his political clout that led to such 'gratuitous' sentence, especially considering the finality of China's justice system.

A defense lawyer in the Maguindanao massacre case Thursday raised the possibility that metal fragments recovered from two victims did not come from bullets but were surgical implants.

Lawyer Paris Real posed this question Thursday to Dr. Ruperto Sumbilon, a forensic expert of the National Bureau of Investigation who conducted the autopsies on the cadavers of Rasul Daud and Norton Edsa, two of the 56 victims of the Nov. 23, 2009 massacre.

In his testimony on his autopsy of the two victims on Wednesday, Sumbilon told Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes the two had died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Real asked Sumbilon if, not being a ballistician, he could tell with certainty if the supposed metal fragments were from bullets or surgical implants.

“I am not a ballistician,” Sumbilon answered.

Interesting.

Happy Birthday, Raquel. May the blessings of peace, love, and familial unity surround you. May God Bless you always.

Perhaps in the summer time, you and your family might come and honor me with a visit in my humble abode.

Happy Birthday! And many more to come!

Love Talk / A question about Filipino courting
February 25, 2011, 01:45:53 AM
Hi guys.

On regards to proper Filipino courting rituals. When meeting with a girlfriend's father, what is the proper demeanor ? Should one be silent and obedient, should one talk, or should one listen? Is there a proper method?

Thanks.
