Even with such exorbitant price tags, the half-wild kitties continue to increase in popularity. However, a recent article in The New Yorker notes that the proliferation of domestic/wild cats is controversial beyond the cost. PETA denounces the practice, the article says, and inbreeding causes complications. In New York, among other places, it's not even legal to own a Savannah, unless it's at least five generations removed from a wild cat.

Yet catteries continue to pump out the newfangled felines and ship them around the world. As one breeder, Judy Sugden, says of her product, "I am an artist! … And I have designed and built a cat."

Big Cat Rescue, the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated to abused and abandoned big cats, says on its site about hybrids, "We have had a bunch of them that were former pets. We have had to turn away many, many more because most of them cannot run free outside and have to have the same cages as bobcats and cougars." It goes on to note that they all spray urine incessantly, they bite, and they "want to eat your other pets and they don't care if it's a German shepherd - they are going to be constantly looking for a way to take the dog down."

Not an organization to mince words, they add, "Allowing the private possession of wild cat/domestic cat hybrids is like strapping a nuclear warhead to the feral cat problem."

Since then, a whole menagerie of "living room leopards" has been spawned, including the Bristol (domestic cat/margay), the Chausie (domestic cat/jungle cat), the Cheetoh (Bengal/ocicat), the Jungle-bob (Pixie-bob/jungle cat) and the Pantherette (Pixie-bob/Asian leopard cat).

And perhaps the most popular of all, the Savannah - half domestic cat, half African Serval.

The first known Savannah was born April 7, 1986, when a female domestic cat gave birth to a kitten sired by a Serval, an African wildcat that weighs up to 50 pounds and eats everything from birds and hares to deer and gazelles. TICA accepted the Savannah breed for registration in 2001, and the Savannah was accepted for Championship status by TICA in 2012.

Joyce Sroufe is generally recognized as the founder of the Savannah breed, and her cat-making business, A1 Savannah Cattery, is not only the world's first Savannah cattery, but also the one responsible for breeding the largest domesticated house cat documented in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Savannahs are classified by percentage of Serval; "F1 Savannahs" are at least 53 percent Serval, and a female can cost up to $35,000. On the lower end of the scale are "SBT Savannah" kittens, which are "pure" Savannahs that have only Savannahs as parents for at least three generations; these kittens cost up to $9,000 a pop. A1 recommends the SBT type for a family with other pets and children because, "their personality and size are better forseeable [sic] and the temperament is predictable." Which is important, presumably, when one is bringing wild animals into a home with children.

The ancient Egyptians domesticated cats some 4,000 years ago, but a modern taste for all things exotic is working to undo that with the introduction of half-wild cats. Breeders bored with mixing plain old domestic mousers for new designer blends (hello, poodle cats) have taken to mating house cats with medium-size wild cats to create new animals that will prowl your shag carpet as if it were the grasslands of Africa.

According to The International Cat Association (TICA), the first effort to breed a wild cat with a domestic feline was in 1963 when Jean S. Mill "invented" the Bengal by crossing a house cat with the Asian leopard cat to create an animal with, "the loving nature of a favored fireside tabby and the striking look associated with leopards, ocelots and jaguars."

Supporting the global economy and the role of central banks are set to be the key points of this weekend's discussions among financial ministers and officials from the Group of Seven countries â€" the U.S., Germany, Japan, the U.K, Italy, France and Canada. But attention will also turn the financial markets, which on Friday were dominated by developments surrounding the yen and the Bank of Japan's super-aggressive monetary policy.

The dollar breached the 100 yen mark late Thursday â€" the first time in a little over four years. Over the past few months, the yen has dropped sharply as the new government in Japan tries to bring an end to the country's two-decade stagnation.

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. in a sea area some 180 nautical miles southeast of Erluanbi, the southernmost tip of the island of Taiwan, said Tsay Tzu-yaw, deputy head of Taiwan's fishery administration, earlier.

According to media reports, after killing the fisherman, the Filipino military ship continued to chase and fire in bursts at the Taiwanese vessel.

It escaped danger only after fleeing for more than an hour, with equipment onboard severely damaged, according to reports carried by Taiwanese media outlets.

Tsay said the Taiwanese boat lost its power shortly after that point.

Following the crew radioing for help, he added, certain boats came to assist the fishing vessel, which is expected to return to Taiwan on Friday. The island's marine patrol authority will also send vessels to help, according to Tsay.

It is unknown why the Filipino military ship opened fire, he said.

BEIJING/TAIPEI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The spokesman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office on Thursday strongly condemned the reported fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Filipino military.

China demands the Philippines investigate the incident thoroughly and swiftly, Yang Yi said, labeling the shooting "barbaric."

"We are in deep mourning over the fisherman's death and express condolence over the shooting," Yang said.

According to the island's fishing authority and media reports, a Taiwanese fisherman was shot dead on Thursday morning when a Filipino military ship opened fire on a Taiwanese fishing boat.

They searched in shelters and put up fliers, but never heard anything about his whereabouts until just a few days ago.

"I got a call from this lady in Missouri and she says I have your dog, and I'm like 'what dog?'" Kipp says.

The woman had Duncan. Kipp explains he ended up in a valley shelter where he was adopted.

Who Wore It Best: Papal Edition
By ABC News
Mar 13, 2013 5:15pm

Moments after his election today, the newly named Pope Francis was dressed in the white vestments unique to the highest office in Catholicism.

The pope is allowed to decide just how decked out he wants to get â€" choosing from dozens of items, including shoes, hats, capes and even crowns.

When he was elected in 2005, Benedict XVI sported a red mozzetta, or short shoulder cape. Francis opted for white.  Both men appear to be wearing the same crimson and gold-embroidered stole.

So we ask you: Who wore it best?

According to Dr. Zhen Gu, the lead author of the paper describing the work:

“This technology effectively creates a ‘closed-loop’ system that mimics the activity of the pancreas in a healthy person, releasing insulin in response to glucose level changes. This has the potential to improve the health and quality of life of diabetes patients.”

Considering that over 25 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from some type of diabetes, this technology could change their lives.

The research team responsible for this new technology is currently in discussions to begin human trials soon. -- http://www.dvice.com/

The injectable nanoparticles are mixed with insulin, modified dextran and glucose oxidase enzymes. Under high glucose levels, these enzymes convert glucose to gluconic acid, breaking down the modified dextran and releases insulin. The remaining gluconic acid and dextran dissolve in the body.
#24239
So how does this work? The nanoparticles are given either a positive or negative charge via their coating. When the solutions are mixed, the positive and negative charges attract to each other to form a network. Once injected into the skin, this network holds the nanoparticles together so that they don’t disperse throughout the body. The nano-network is created to be porous, allowing blood and blood sugar to reach the nanoparticle cores.
#24240
The bodies of patients with type 1 diabetes do not produce enough insulin. Insulin is important as it transports glucose, or blood sugar, from the blood into the body’s cells. Currently, patients with this type of diabetes must frequently monitor their blood levels by taking samples of their own blood and inject insulin to maintain blood sugar levels in the normal range. These injections can be painful and come with their own set of risks as they are unable to determine an accurate dosage.

A new development for diabetes treatment has been discovered.

Researchers at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Massachussetts Institute of Technology and the Children’s Hospital Boston have developed a network of injectable nanoparticles that can release insulin when the blood sugar levels of diabetics begin to rise. This new technology was tested on mice, and researchers discovered that one injection was capable of maintaining normal blood sugar levels for up to 10 days.

Terrafugia isn’t the only company trying to get the world’s first flying car into production. The Hammerhead Project announced a crowdfunding campaign in April this year to try and build a flying car. The project is looking to raise $500,000 for the development of the prototype. According to the company, the vehicle will also be a vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

“For decades people have dreamt about flying cars. Now, technology is finally at a point where we can build one that’s safe and reliable,” said Jeff Case, founder of The Hammerhead Project. “In addition to raising money, I would like to get people excited about the project and flying cars in general. Many people would like to fly effortlessly from point A to B in a personal vehicle.” He believes there are millions of flying car enthusiasts around the world. -- http://www.redorbit.com/

Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich said that even though Transition hasn’t moved into development, this is the right time to start thinking about the future of the company beyond it.

“We are passionate about continuing to lead the creation of a flying car industry and are dedicating resources to lay the foundations for our vision of personal transportation,” Dietrich said.

The company said its design team is excited to be looking ahead to TF-X development activities, including research and development, production, and customer support activities. It said the company has already had preliminary conversations with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about the TF-X concept.

According to Terrafugia, the FAA has “demonstrated their willingness to consider innovative technologies and regulatory solutions that are in the public interest and enhance the level of safety of personal aviation.”

Terrafugia said it is nearing the production phase of the Transition, which had a test flight at Plattsburgh International Airport in April 2012. The company has more than 100 orders of the $279,000 Transition vehicle.

Terrafugia Flying Car Company Develops New Concept
May 7, 2013

Terrafugia started developing the world’s first flying car a few years ago, and even though its Transition Street-Legal Airplane isn’t in production yet, it is already developing a new concept.

The company announced this weekend that it has begun studies of a four-seat, vertical takeoff and landing hybrid-electric flying car called the TF-X.

“Incorporating the state-of-the-art in intelligent systems, fly by wire controls, and currently available technology, the TF-X will further increase the level of safety, simplicity, and convenience of personal aviation,” Terrafugia said in a release announcing the car concept.

Transition Street-Legal Airplane looks more like a plane, but the new TF-X works more like a helicopter with its vertical takeoff and landing. The technology being used is the same kind found in the Marines’ V-22 Osprey.

Risaib left his business card with the guards but had not returned since, he said.

Unable to reach Risaib, the building management later contacted PGA Cars to verify the car’s ownership, the agent added.

“We invited PGA to shed light on the car’s existence, but its representative said the transaction was between the building management and the car’s owner,” Mallari said.

Based on the sales invoice obtained by the NBI, the luxury car was bought by Amalilio from the car distributor for P17.1 million in cash.

“PGA Cars faces (charges for) obstruction of justice for not reporting the existence of the vehicle after they were informed by the building management,” Mallari said.

He said records from the BSA Twin Tower 1 security office showed that the car was parked in the building in October last year by Shaffic Risaib, who leased the parking slot for one month and paid in cash.

It is perhaps useful to restate briefly Boehme's main problematic in more standard philosophical terminology:

Boehme's speculations led him to the idea that the first schism within the will of God had to materialize in the form of a concrete self-alienation. He argued (in effect) that there must be a transition between (1) the potential polarity involved in positing an unmanifest non-being's need to become manifest to itself, and (2) the coming-into-existence of a being that was manifest, and yet also contrary to itself. The unmanifest Godhead was prior to all existence and as such absolutely homogeneous; and yet -- this was the first paradox -- it included an inherent tendency to differentiate itself into contraries. Thus the undifferentiated unity passed into the self-differentiating unity. The latter, like the Logos of Heraklitus, contained in posse the germs of a balance of opposites, whose hypothetical contrariety was of such a kind -- and this was the second paradox -- that their transition into concrete actuality was necessary. In this way, the hidden dialectic of God issued forth into the manifest dialectic of nature, and with that, the sensible universe was created.-- http://www.uwec.edu/
#24258
Boehme taught that the interaction between these two principles of the divine wrath and love produced the creative impulse out of which the manifold universe evolved. Moreover, the two cooperative forces did not cease to be productive after the universe's creation, for both are necessary also in order to sustain it. All things consist of positive and negative aspects, the divine Yes and No. In the present age, however, the first principle is no longer violent or chaotic, having been transmuted by the influence of the second principle. Indeed, Boehme's third major principle, identified with the Holy Spirit, is precisely the continual movement between the first two: It is the living breath of the cosmos).
#24259
Yet despite the destructive aspect of the divine wrath, it was, according to Boehme, essential as the foundation for all subsequent developments. Without it, there could have been neither light nor life nor joy of any kind. Hence, the Grimmigkeit could in a sense be described as the generator of all things: as God the Father. When the first principle turned its primordial bitterness upon itself, there transpired a dramatic reversal. The anguished negation of free self-manifestation was itself negated: With a violent thunderclap, the harsh first principle overcame its own harshness, and a joyous light supervened. This symbolized the emergence of harmony and order out of the original chaos. Triumphant was the second principle, that of divine love, which Boehme also characterized as God the Son.
#24260
Now, because the introverted "longing" appeared to be incapable of ever finding satisfaction, it took the form of a fierce and chaotic "fire" that burned without giving light. This was the quality of divine wrath or bitterness (Grimmigkeit), which perpetually turned in upon itself and consumed its own substance. This self-destructive activity caused tremendous pain and anguish within the divine nature, the first suffering that the universe had ever known. Boehme described this first principle as "the craving to draw into itself."
#24261
This will, by means of becoming desire, could find and feel itself, and in so doing it had taken an important step toward self-manifestation. Yet what this will-as-desire initially revealed was only an imperfect reflection of its inner essence. The spiritual hunger began as a "darkness," obscuring the purity of the Ungrund.

Once having established the existence of a primal "darkness," Boehme next proceeded to elicit a series of developmental stages through which, as he maintained, the world-creative process necessarily had to pass. The impetus came from the contradictory character of a situation that could not endure, inasmuch as the "darkness" covering the will conflicted with the purpose that had first given rise to it. Consequently, a second will came into being, whose aim was to return again into the original condition of unity, while at the same time keeping hold of the darkness, which thus far had been the only product of God's will toward manifestation. The result was a movement of drawing in upon itself, a contraction into a core of being. This core then became the ground (Grund) of all subsequent stages.
#24262
Boehme next faced the question how to explain the manner in which the eternal "no-thing" could experience longing in the first place. In order to manifest himself, it seemed that God had to negate his own essence and eternal freedom. But even assuming such an act were possible, how would it qualify as a true revelation? Would it not rather be a distortion of what it was seeking to make manifest?

Evidently, this primal Abyss was only relatively, not absolutely, "unreal." Its "no-thingness" was somewhat analogous to the indeterminate ain soph in the Kabbala. Although undifferentiated, the Abyss possessed the inherent potentiality to become something actual and concrete; and the first manifestation of this potentiality, according to Boehme, was the experience of a "hunger" or, as he otherwise expressed it, a "longing." As the will of the unmanifest Godhead sought to reveal itself in its primordial freedom -- that is, as containing no other features or attributes than the mere will to become sensible -- all that this will could possibly bring forth was "the quality of hunger, which it itself . . . [was]".
#24263
In God's quest for self-manifestation, however, there lurked an implicit dilemma. On the one hand, his eternal purity and freedom consisted in the condition of the Ungrund, which transcended all limitations. On the other hand, the very absence of oppositions within this Ungrund meant that it was incapable of either manifesting or apprehending itself -- it was, in fact, a "nothingness" (ein Nichts).
#24264
If the hidden God, who is but a Single Essence and Will, had not of his own will gone forth out of himself, if he had not issued out of the eternal knowing . . . into a divisibility of the will (Schiedlichkeit des Willens), and had not the same divisibility into comprehensibility (Infasslichkeit) conducted to a natural and creaturely life, and were it not the case that this same divisibility in life consisted in strife -- how else then could he have wanted the hidden will of God, who in himself is but One, to be revealed? How might a will within a Single Unity be a knowledge of himself (Erkenntnis seiner selber)?
#24265
One of Boehme's most daring conceptions was that God's emergence out of pure Oneness into differentiated actuality required a confrontation with contrariety and opposition. It was out of this creative struggle that the sensible universe issued forth. Boehme held that it was inevitable and even desirable that conflict and suffering should have arisen. These negative elements were the motivating spurs that stimulated the production of all the manifold phenomena of nature. Moreover, it was solely through the struggle with negativity that the minds of finite creatures could become aware of themselves, their world, and ultimately God:

If the natural life had no opposition (Widerwaertigkeit), and were without a goal, then it would never ask for its own ground, from which it came; then the hidden God would remain unknown to the natural life . . . there would be no sensation, nor will, nor activity, nor understanding.
#24266
Boehme elaborated a rudimentary form of dialectic, consisting of positive and negative polar principles. These principles, he said, emerged out of the Godhead's originally undifferentiated non-being (das Nichts), also described as the primordial Abyss, or "Ungrund," and then developed through ordered stages of manifestation toward complete self-revelation. In a vivid, often dramatic style, Boehme portrayed the development from God's quiescent eternality toward his creation of, and active embodiment in, the physical universe:

In the non-natural, uncreaturely Godhead (Gottheit) there is nothing more than a single will, which is also called the one God, who wants nothing else except to find and grasp himself, to go out of himself, and by means of this outgoing to bring himself into visibility (Beschaulichkeit). This Beschaulichkeit is to be understood as comprising the three-fold character of the Godhead, as well as the mirror of his wisdom and the eye by which he sees.
#24267
In the finite creature, however, God found his own revelation reflected as in a mirror. Boehme reasoned that because God desired to reveal himself to himself, and because revelation required a sensible (i.e. experienceable) embodiment, therefore God had to become sensible in order to satisfy his need for self-revelation. Thus, the dialectical drive toward self-awareness within God's originally inchoate will was what gave rise to the spiritual as well as the material universe.
#24268
Boehme's primary religious project was the attempt to think through the transition from the Godhead's illimitable oneness to its self-imposed aspect of limitation. This limitation was necessary, Boehme maintained, in order for the Godhead to be able to apprehend itself as God. The Deity needed to experience his epiphany in nature in order to become fully self-conscious. "In his depth," Boehme wrote, "God himself does not know what he is. For he knows no beginning, and also nothing like himself, and also no end. . . ."

They went out through the revolving doors that made a faintly derisive whistling sound when you pushed them. It was two blocks to the parking lot. At the drugstore on the corner she said, "Wait here for me. I forgot something. I won't be a minute." She was more than a minute. Walter Mitty lighted a cigarette. It began to rain, rain with sleet in it. He stood up against the wall of the drugstore, smoking. . . . He put his shoulders back and his heels together. "To hell with the handkerchief," said Waker Mitty scornfully. He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then, with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last.

Something struck his shoulder. "I've been looking all over this hotel for you," said Mrs. Mitty. "Why do you have to hide in this old chair? How did you expect me to find you?" "Things close in," said Walter Mitty vaguely. "What?" Mrs. Mitty said. "Did you get the what's-its-name? The puppy biscuit? What's in that box?" "Overshoes," said Mitty. "Couldn't you have put them on in the store?" 'I was thinking," said Walter Mitty. "Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?" She looked at him. "I'm going to take your temperature when I get you home," she said.

. . . "The cannonading has got the wind up in young Raleigh, sir," said the sergeant. Captain Mitty looked up at him through tousled hair. "Get him to bed," he said wearily, "with the others. I'll fly alone." "But you can't, sir," said the sergeant anxiously. "It takes two men to handle that bomber and the Archies are pounding hell out of the air. Von Richtman's circus is between here and Saulier." "Somebody's got to get that ammunition dump," said Mitty. "I'm going over. Spot of brandy?" He poured a drink for the sergeant and one for himself. War thundered and whined around the dugout and battered at the door. There was a rending of wood and splinters flew through the room. "A bit of a near thing," said Captain Mitty carelessly. 'The box barrage is closing in," said the sergeant. "We only live once, Sergeant," said Mitty, with his faint, fleeting smile. "Or do we?" He poured another brandy and tossed it off. "I never see a man could hold his brandy like you, sir," said the sergeant. "Begging your pardon, sir." Captain Mitty stood up and strapped on his huge Webley-Vickers automatic. "It's forty kilometers through hell, sir," said the sergeant. Mitty finished one last brandy. "After all," he said softly, "what isn't?" The pounding of the cannon increased; there was the rat-tat-tatting of machine guns, and from somewhere came the menacing pocketa-pocketa-pocketa of the new flame-throwers. Walter Mitty walked to the door of the dugout humming "Aupres de Ma Blonde." He turned and waved to the sergeant. "Cheerio!" he said. . . .

His wife would be through at the hairdresser's in fifteen minutes' Mitty saw in looking at his watch, unless they had trouble drying it; sometimes they had trouble drying it. She didn't like to get to the hotel first, she would want him to be there waiting for her as usual. He found a big leather chair in the lobby, facing a window, and he put the overshoes and the puppy biscuit on the floor beside it. He picked up an old copy of Liberty and sank down into the chair. "Can Germany Conquer the World Through the Air?" Walter Mitty looked at the pictures of bombing planes and of ruined streets.

"Puppy biscuit," said Walter Mitty. He stopped walking and the buildings of Waterbury rose up out of the misty courtroom and surrounded him again. A woman who was passing laughed. "He said 'Puppy biscuit,'" she said to her companion. "That man said 'Puppy biscuit' to himself." Walter Mitty hurried on. He went into an A. P., not the first one he came to but a smaller one farther up the street. "I want some biscuit for small, young dogs," he said to the clerk. "Any special brand, sir?" The greatest pistol shot in the world thought a moment. "It says 'Puppies Bark for It' on the box," said Walter Mitty.

. . . "Perhaps this will refresh your memory." The District Attorney suddenly thrust a heavy automatic at the quiet figure on the witness stand. "Have you ever seen this before?'' Walter Mitty took the gun and examined it expertly. "This is my Webley-Vickers 50.80," ho said calmly. An excited buzz ran around the courtroom. The Judge rapped for order. "You are a crack shot with any sort of firearms, I believe?" said the District Attorney, insinuatingly. "Objection!" shouted Mitty's attorney. "We have shown that the defendant could not have fired the shot. We have shown that he wore his right arm in a sling on the night of the fourteenth of July." Walter Mitty raised his hand briefly and the bickering attorneys were stilled. "With any known make of gun," he said evenly, "I could have killed Gregory Fitzhurst at three hundred feet with my left hand." Pandemonium broke loose in the courtroom. A woman's scream rose above the bedlam and suddenly a lovely, dark-haired girl was in Walter Mitty's arms. The District Attorney struck at her savagely. Without rising from his chair, Mitty let the man have it on the point of the chin. "You miserable cur!" . . .

When he came out into the street again, with the overshoes in a box under his arm, Walter Mitty began to wonder what the other thing was his wife had told him to get. She had told him, twice before they set out from their house for Waterbury. In a way he hated these weekly trips to town--he was always getting something wrong. Kleenex, he thought, Squibb's, razor blades? No. Tooth paste, toothbrush, bicarbonate, Carborundum, initiative and referendum? He gave it up. But she would remember it. "Where's the what's-its- name?" she would ask. "Don't tell me you forgot the what's-its-name." A newsboy went by shouting something about the Waterbury trial.

They're so damn cocky, thought Walter Mitty, walking along Main Street; they think they know everything. Once he had tried to take his chains off, outside New Milford, and he had got them wound around the axles. A man had had to come out in a wrecking car and unwind them, a young, grinning garageman. Since then Mrs. Mitty always made him drive to a garage to have the chains taken off. The next time, he thought, I'll wear my right arm in a sling; they won't grin at me then. I'll have my right arm in a sling and they'll see I couldn't possibly take the chains off myself. He kicked at the slush on the sidewalk. "Overshoes," he said to himself, and he began looking for a shoe store.

"Back it up, Mac!! Look out for that Buick!" Walter Mitty jammed on the brakes. "Wrong lane, Mac," said the parking-lot attendant, looking at Mitty closely. "Gee. Yeh," muttered Mitty. He began cautiously to back out of the lane marked "Exit Only." "Leave her sit there," said the attendant. "I'll put her away." Mitty got out of the car. "Hey, better leave the key." "Oh," said Mitty, handing the man the ignition key. The attendant vaulted into the car, backed it up with insolent skill, and put it where it belonged.

In the operating room there were whispered introductions: "Dr. Remington, Dr. Mitty. Dr. Pritchard-Mitford, Dr. Mitty." "I've read your book on streptothricosis," said Pritchard-Mitford, shaking hands. "A brilliant performance, sir." "Thank you," said Walter Mitty. "Didn't know you were in the States, Mitty," grumbled Remington. "Coals to Newcastle, bringing Mitford and me up here for a tertiary." "You are very kind," said Mitty. A huge, complicated machine, connected to the operating table, with many tubes and wires, began at this moment to go pocketa-pocketa-pocketa. "The new anesthetizer is giving away!" shouted an intern. "There is no one in the East who knows how to fix it!" "Quiet, man!" said Mitty, in a low, cool voice. He sprang to the machine, which was now going pocketa-pocketa-queep-pocketa-queep . He began fingering delicately a row of glistening dials. "Give me a fountain pen!" he snapped. Someone handed him a fountain pen. He pulled a faulty piston out of the machine and inserted the pen in its place. "That will hold for ten minutes," he said. "Get on with the operation. A nurse hurried over and whispered to Renshaw, and Mitty saw the man turn pale. "Coreopsis has set in," said Renshaw nervously. "If you would take over, Mitty?" Mitty looked at him and at the craven figure of Benbow, who drank, and at the grave, uncertain faces of the two great specialists. "If you wish," he said. They slipped a white gown on him, he adjusted a mask and drew on thin gloves; nurses handed him shining . . .

. . . "It's the millionaire banker, Wellington McMillan," said the pretty nurse. "Yes?" said Walter Mitty, removing his gloves slowly. "Who has the case?" "Dr. Renshaw and Dr. Benbow, but there are two specialists here, Dr. Remington from New York and Dr. Pritchard-Mitford from London. He flew over." A door opened down a long, cool corridor and Dr. Renshaw came out. He looked distraught and haggard. "Hello, Mitty," he said. `'We're having the devil's own time with McMillan, the millionaire banker and close personal friend of Roosevelt. Obstreosis of the ductal tract. Tertiary. Wish you'd take a look at him." "Glad to," said Mitty.

Walter Mitty stopped the car in front of the building where his wife went to have her hair done. "Remember to get those overshoes while I'm having my hair done," she said. "I don't need overshoes," said Mitty. She put her mirror back into her bag. "We've been all through that," she said, getting out of the car. "You're not a young man any longer." He raced the engine a little. "Why don't you wear your gloves? Have you lost your gloves?" Walter Mitty reached in a pocket and brought out the gloves. He put them on, but after she had turned and gone into the building and he had driven on to a red light, he took them off again. "Pick it up, brother!" snapped a cop as the light changed, and Mitty hastily pulled on his gloves and lurched ahead. He drove around the streets aimlessly for a time, and then he drove past the hospital on his way to the parking lot.

"Hmm?" said Walter Mitty. He looked at his wife, in the seat beside him, with shocked astonishment. She seemed grossly unfamiliar, like a strange woman who had yelled at him in a crowd. "You were up to fifty-five," she said. "You know I don't like to go more than forty. You were up to fifty-five." Walter Mitty drove on toward Waterbury in silence, the roaring of the SN202 through the worst storm in twenty years of Navy flying fading in the remote, intimate airways of his mind. "You're tensed up again," said Mrs. Mitty. "It's one of your days. I wish you'd let Dr. Renshaw look you over."

"WE'RE going through!" The Commander's voice was like thin ice breaking. He wore his full-dress uniform, with the heavily braided white cap pulled down rakishly over one cold gray eye. "We can't make it, sir. It's spoiling for a hurricane, if you ask me." "I'm not asking you, Lieutenant Berg," said the Commander. "Throw on the power lights! Rev her up to 8500! We're going through!" The pounding of the cylinders increased: ta-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa. The Commander stared at the ice forming on the pilot window. He walked over and twisted a row of complicated dials. "Switch on No. 8 auxiliary!" he shouted. "Switch on No. 8 auxiliary!" repeated Lieutenant Berg. "Full strength in No. 3 turret!" shouted the Commander. "Full strength in No. 3 turret!" The crew, bending to their various tasks in the huge, hurtling eight-engined Navy hydroplane, looked at each other and grinned. "The Old Man'll get us through," they said to one another. "The Old Man ain't afraid of hell!" . . .

"Not so fast! You're driving too fast!" said Mrs. Mitty. "What are you driving so fast for?"

In 1898, Edward William Barton-Wright, a British engineer who had spent the previous three years living in the Empire of Japan, returned to England and announced the formation of a "New Art of Self Defence".[2] This art, he claimed, combined the best elements of a range of fighting styles into a unified whole, which he had named Bartitsu. Barton-Wright had previously also studied "boxing, wrestling, fencing, savate and the use of the stiletto under recognised masters", reportedly testing his skills by "engaging toughs (street fighters) until (he) was satisfied in their application." He defined Bartitsu as meaning "self defence in all its forms"; the word was a portmanteau of his own surname and of "Jujitsu".

Bartitsu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bartitsu is an eclectic martial art and self-defence method originally developed in England during the years 1898â€"1902. In 1901 it was immortalised (as "baritsu") by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mystery stories. Although dormant throughout most of the 20th century, bartitsu has been experiencing a revival since 2002.

Health and Food / Maggot Therapy
May 11, 2013, 06:58:57 AM

Hopefully you won’t remember this image when you have a very deep wound or ulcer that won’t heal. In many of today’s leading medical practices doctors make use of the maggots (or larva) of bluebottle flies to clean wounds situated away from organs or body cavities. The larva are sterilized and placed inside wounds, where they feed on the dead tissue and so assist the body in producing new cells. As ugly as they are, even their saliva helps to sustain the area’s sterility as it has anti-bacterial chemicals. The maggots are mostly used in the treatment of diabetic ulcers that form on the feet. -- http://listverse.com/
