Ms ligiah dia na si Parokya ni Edgar,

Parokya ni Edgar is a Filipino band that was formed in 1993 by a group of Ateneo de Manila High School students. The band is famous and most lauded for its original rock novelty songs and often satirical covers of famous songs. With several in the music scene, it has transcended musical genres, varying styles from one to another - alternative rock to pop rock, funk to rapcore, and so on without leaving behind its trademark style of providing comic relief to their listeners.
Before Parokya ni Edgar
Naming themselves Comic Relief, the band members were originally composed of three vocalists and two guitarists - Chito Miranda, Vinci Montaner, Gabriel Chee-Kee, a certain Miko and Jerick. Their after-school jamming honed their musical skills, making themselves worthy enough to deserve the opening number for an Eraserheads concert. This "break" made the band members decide to add a drummer and a bassist, enter Dindin Moreno and Buhawi Meneses. This same performance marked the change of the band's name to Parokya ni Edgar.[clarify] After high school, two of their members, Jerick and Miko pursued other interests and left the band. Far from being discouraged, the remaining band members invited to their fold guitarist Darius Semaña.

[edit] Parokya ni Edgar
The name was said to have been derived from an old classroom joke involving the main character in Noli Me Tangere, one of their school subjects.

The band soon started playing at the legendary local band hub, Club Dredd. Coming out during the height of the Pinoy rock explosion, with the Filipino rock community giving into the influence of foreign bands, especially grunge acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Parokya ni Edgar stood out as the band that played like no other. Their jokes, silly antics, and outrageous performances paved way to the popularity that they currently enjoy.

Eventually, the late Bella Dy Tan, managing director of Universal Records signed them up as contract artist after viewing a gig at Club Dredd. Soon their initial recordings such as Buloy, Trip and Lutong Bahay were heard all over the air waves across the nation. Their first album, Khangkhungkherrnitz became a triple platinum hit.

[edit] Musical legacy
Though they still remain very active in their musical efforts, their unmatched staying power in the Philippine recording scene already is garnering favorable critical comments on their band achievements. The secret of their success is centered on Chito Miranda's musical and band leadership. He is the core that keeps everybody in the band together. All music and artistic ideas pass thru his judgement, filtering it which often is up to date to the taste and reception of their audience. They seem to be making fun of themselves and easy-going but close associates and friends of the band point out that this band persona is actually calculated and to a certain extent planned. The humor and relentless technique of self-immolation shall be the hallmark of their musical contributions.

They now make commercial Jingles, campaign jingles for politician and novelty songs which in direct line of Lito Camo, Philippines most iconic novelty song maker. They can also be invited at childrens party and stag party

Oscar De La Hoya is interested in “taking a look” at undefeated Filipino super bantamweight Ciso Morales who has a record of 9-0 with 6 knockouts.

That’s the word from Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez who told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today they had seen tapes of his fights and they “want to take a first hand look at him.”

In an overseas telephone conversation, Gomez said this is the reason they scheduled Morales, who just turned 20, in a six round preliminary bout on the undercard of the rematch between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15 at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino.

Gomez said we have “heard good things about the kid so we are going to give him a break and put him on.” However, there’s no opponent for Morales as yet but Golden Boy expects to come up with a suitable foe in the next couple of weeks.

Gomez revealed their philosophy in the US debut of Filipino fighters is to match them against opponents who are “going to test them but at the same time make sure they are not going to be overmatched.”

He noted that some of these fighters are really good but “mentally you don’t know how they are going to react fighting for the first time out of their country. Some can raise the level of their competition and there are other guys who can crumble.”

At the same time Gomez debunked reports that Juanito Rubillar’s IBF mandated eliminator against former WBC light flyweight champion Omar Nino would take place on the Pacquiao-Marquez undercard. He said "I dont know anything about that" echoing what co-promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank said the previous day.

What a very tempting offer Lorenzo, my heart was full of joy & i do think nobody will reject this one, but for the sake of realistic event i might not as well accept this multi million dollar offer, Why? coz we have only limited time to live on this planet, as we recalled the cycle of mans life on earth this was from the time we were born then to adulthood afterwhich if we we're fortunate enough we'll get older, then death will comes next, i think immortality goes only to our dear creator, this thread is very nice, let's also hear words from others.

  The Philippine Star
The holidays are far from over for thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Without intending to, at least 20,000 vacationing OFWs are now on extended Christmas leave due to a shortage of flights, the local recruitment industry reported Friday.

Local recruitment leaders said the OFWs who came home for Christmas and New Year were unable to leave the country and go back to their employment abroad immediately after the holidays because they had a hard time getting bookings.

"While a majority of the vacationing OFWs have already returned abroad, about 20,000 are still here due to lack of airline seats," local recruitment official Lito Soriano said.

Soriano said a majority of those affected by the flight shortage are OFWs employed in the Middle East.

According to Soriano, lack of airline flights after the holidays is an annual problem for the local recruitment industry because of the huge number of OFWs who arrive in the country during the holidays.

"There are not enough airline seats from December to January and this is not just the problem of the government. It is everybody’s concern," Soriano pointed out.

Soriano said some foreign employers have even extended their assistance to the Filipino workers just so they could get a booking and return to their work at the soonest possible time.

Soriano called on the country’s flag carrier to consider plying the Middle East route again to resolve the problem.

"We are expecting a surge in the hiring of OFWs in the Middle East this year so we hope Philippine Airlines would reconsider the market," Soriano said.

He added that 100,000 jobs are available for OFWs in the Middle East this year alone.

"We have a standing 100,000 job orders from the Middle East. The only problem now is getting the qualified workers to fill up the manpower requirement," Soriano said.

A fire broke out in a squatter’s area in Makati City, gutting several houses near the southbound lane of EDSA Guadalupe Friday morning.

Radio dzMM said the fire hit the depressed area in Barangay Guadualupe Viejo around 8 a.m. The fire caused heavy traffic on the EDSA southbound lane as firefighters and affected families spilled over the major thoroughfare. Only one lane was passable to southbound vehicles.

The fire has been declared under control as of 10:30 a.m.

San Carlos Seminary opened its gates to accommodate the families who lost their houses in the blaze.

Barangay officials said there are around 5,000 families living in the three-hectare property in Lapiral compound, located at the back of the Loyola Memorial Funeral Home.

A body of an elderly man was seen being carried by residents in the place. The man died of an illness not related to the fire, relatives said.

Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

Expenditures from tourists reached $4.89 billion, up 41 percent from the same period in 2006, the department said.

South Koreans were the most numerous visitors with 653,310 arrivals, a 14.2 percent increase over 2006.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano said he hopes the country can post about 3.3 million tourist arrivals and $5.8 billion in expenditures in 2008.

The department said it is encouraging private companies to schedule more events and promotions so that tourists will stay longer and spend more money.

The Philippines saw 2.843 million tourist arrivals in 2006.

'Neglect, gas behind Glorietta blast'

Now it can be told.

The multi-agency task force assigned to probe the Glorietta 2 explosion recommended the filing of criminal charges against 15 people, including three mid-ranking employees of Ayala Land Inc., holding them responsible for the mall blast that killed 11 people last year.

The Multi-Agency Investigation Task Force (MAITF) said it was sticking to the initial findings that a methane leak and diesel vapors caused the lunchtime explosion in the heart of the city's financial district on October 19 last year. The incident also left 108 people injured.

"The Task Force ruled out terrorism in the explosion. The explosion was caused by methane and diesel vapor explosion," said Chief Superintendent Luizo Ticman, MAITF head during the presentation of their report on Thursday.

Ticman also identified the people who will be charged with criminal and administrative cases for the deadly blast.

Among those who will be charged with cases of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries and damage to property are engineers Arnel Gonzales, Jowell Velvez, and Marcelo Botenes of the Ayala Property Management Corporation (APMC), and Candelario Valdueza of the Makati Supermarket Corp. (MSC); engineer Clifford Arriola, Joselito Buenaventura, Charlie Nepomuceno, Jonathan Ibuna, and Juan Ricafort of Marchem Industrial Sales and Service Inc.

The other persons who will be charged for violation of the Fire Code are engineer Ricardo Cruz, operations manager of Metalline Enterprises and its foreman, Miguel Velasco.

The police will also file gross neglect of duty causing undue injury against member of the Makati City Fire Station identified as Senior Fire Officer 4 Anthony Grey, SFO2 Leonilo Balais and Senior Inspector Reynaldo Enoc.

Chief Inspector Jose Embang Jr., Makati City Fire Station chief, will be charged administratively "for simple neglect of duty-for failure to review and validate before issuing fire safety inspection certificate."

‘Two gas explosions’
The task force investigation showed that two gas explosions took place at the Glorietta 2 mall based on investigations.

The 41-page MAITF final report said the first blast was a methane explosion, which took place at 1:31 p.m. The MAITF's final report said methane accumulated after knee-deep water, diesel, human and kitchen waste at the mall's allegedly poorly ventilated basement was left unattended for 76 days.

The MAITF said the second blast was a diesel vapor explosion, which occurred a minute after the first.

The accumulated methane can only explode with a spark or other possible igniters. Post-blast investigators said they were unable to find the exact igniter of the blast.

In the final report, police said probers from the National Bureau of Investigation "identified the possible source of ignition," which was the motor control panel of waste pumps two and three at the basement. It said a rise in temperature caused by the methane gas triggered the second explosion.

Australian probe backs PNP findings
During the presentation, the police showed some notes taken from the investigation report of the Australian Federal Police, which supported the MAITF's findings.

The notes taken said a fuel-air mixture explosion occurred, which originated from the basement; the explosion did not originate inside the diesel tank, however there has been a pressure build-up and release from the tank which may have occurred secondary to the initial explosion; initiation source unknown, however, a number of potential sources still exist; the exact gas that acted as the fuel in the explosive mixture is unknown, however, based on the examination of the basement possibilities include: sewer gas/fumes which can consist of sulfur dioxide, methane, ammonia and diesel; based on the examinations conducted, there was no evidence to suggest that explosion had been caused and/or initiated by an IED.

Ticman also showed a Powerpoint copy of US Ambassador Kristie Kenney's statement, where she confirmed that the American experts' findings was similar to the Philippine police's investigation results.

Puno also dismissed the findings of foreign experts hired by Ayala Land Inc. (ALI), saying the explosion that killed 11 people last year was caused by a powerful bomb.

Puno said the findings of the experts can only be used as defense when the cases are filed in court but he was confident that a judge will also "set aside" the report.

"… for the moment, we would like to think that the studies that they did were done in good faith… when they (findings) are used to contest the criminal investigation that is ongoing that is when we are, by duty force, to assert that there is in fact only one authorized, under the law, to undertake the criminal investigation here," he said.

RDX findings not significant to blast
Meanwhile, Ticman's report no longer dwelled extensively on the reported RDX residue swabbed from the mall's ground floor during post-blast investigation.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno said investigators were "not really thinking too much about this RDX because of all other physical evidence that was surfacing."

"Even if we have two drums of RDX there, because all the other aspects that relate to a bombing were absent, there would not have been a bombing in any case. So, it was irrelevant whether RDX was there or not after all the physical evidence that surfaced," he said.

However, the RDX issue was touched in the final copy's draft that was earlier shown to ABS-CBN News.

In the draft, the MAITF had failed to mention a military ordnance team that responded right after the blast. Maj. Allan Sollano of the Explosives and Ordnance Battalion of the Philippine Army based in Fort Bonifacio, was identified as the investigator who recovered a plastic bag where a residue of RDX was reportedly traced.

There were reports that the plastic bag was planted by an Army officer, which led the police's recovery of an RDX residue at the mall's ground floor. The Army had barred the media from interviewing Sollano as it denied that the plastic bag was planted at the blast site.

In the final report, the MAITF said the "RDX findings on the plastic and debris recovered on the ground flood did not cause nor did it initiate the explosion."

It added: "RDX by itself is not a bomb. It is very stable and burns rather than explodes... the RDX findings were not corroborated by other evidence and it was not significant to the explosion."

Aside from the negative RDX findings, the MAITF ruled out theories that the explosion was caused by a bomb because of the absence of a blast crater.

The other missing evidence to prove the bomb theory were the tearing effect on metals and other construction materials in the mall, soot or blackening of affected areas, absence of bomb residue at the blast side and the victims' clothings, and the absence of components of an improvised explosive device.

No charges to be filed vs Ayala Land officials
A source told ABS-CBN earlier that criminal cases would also be filed against officers of ALI, but their names where taken out in the final report.

The officials named in the draft report were Emilio Tumbocon, APMC president; Jaime Ayala, ALI president; and Peter Ng, MSC president.

Puno said Ayala officials will not be included in the charge sheet since the evidence as of this time showed no probable cause to indict them. He said "due care and diligence have been exercised by these officials."

"… unless there is any further evidence, new information that would indicate that there is personal action by any of the officials that will constitute a failure of due care and diligence in making these decisions relating to the safety, then the cases would remain as they are," Puno said.

Ticman said the charges will be filed Friday before the Department of Justice.

Puno also announced that he also ordered the cancellation of the fire safety inspection certificate that was issued "erroneously" to the mall owners.

"I’ve asked Undersecretary Marius Corpus to coordinate with everybody concerned in the building to apply for a new fire safety inspection certificate which should be preceded by the installation of a functional fire protection system and a fire exit. So, this is effective immediately," he said.

Ayala Land disappointed over PNP report
ALI, meanwhile, said it was disappointed over the result of the mall blast probe.

"We believe there was no methane or diesel fume produced, and no pressure or gas compression was created to generate the kind of explosion that actually happened," the company said in a statement.

"Our own assessment shows due diligence and care was exercised in the maintenance of the basement where the explosion appears to have occurred."

ALI said that pieces of evidence it gave to the PNP were not considered.

"It will be recalled that the PNP has said that it would welcome cooperation from all sectors. We are disappointed that the evidence we have shared appears not to have been considered."

The company said it was waiting for the blast site's turnover so it can complete its own investigation.

"Ayala Land will submit its forensic evidence before the proper forum. It will be the courts that will be the final arbiter on the admissibility of such evidence and whether or not negligence led to the tragic events of October 19."

"Our own assessment shows due diligence and care was exercised in the maintenance of the basement where the explosion appears to have occurred," the company said in a statement. "It will be the courts that will be the final arbiter."

Puno brushed off ALI's continuing contradiction of the police findings.

"We really do not care what Ayala investigates and what they say. They are being investigated themselves," he said.

Two gas explosions, and not a bomb, killed 11 people and 108 others at the Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City last October 19, police said based on its post-blast probe’s final report released Thursday.

The final report by the Multi-Agency Investigation Task Force (MAITF) said it had definitely ruled out the possibility that terrorism or bombing caused the deadly explosion.

The 41-page MAITF final report said the first blast was a methane explosion, which took place at 1:31 p.m. The MAITF's final report said methane gas accumulated after knee-deep water, diesel, human and kitchen waste at the mall's allegedly poorly ventilated basement was left unattended for 76 days.

The MAITF said the second blast was a diesel vapor explosion, which occurred a minute after the first blast.

The accumulated methane gas can only explode with a spark or other possible igniters.

"Simultaneous to the vapor build-up was some pressure release through the tank’s breathers as evidenced by the whistling pressure cooker’s sound after the methane explosion. Since the accumulation of diesel vapor inside the tank reached its explosive range, the second explosion â€" the DIESEL VAPOR EXPLOSION occurred," the report said.

Chief Superintendent Luizo Ticman, MAITF head, said water taken from the basement during the post-blast investigation tested positive for methane. Pictures of human waste taken at the basement were also shown during the presentation.

The police said the two explosions were evident in the bending of the roofs and floors at the basement.

Testimonies of maintenance workers of the Paramount Electrical & Mechanical Corp. were also used as proof of the methane gas build-up in the mall's basement.

Police said Elmer Giganto, the leader of the Paramount maintenance team that pulled out the sump pump at the basement in August 4 last year, told the investigators that "a very offensive odor" came from the two sump pits.

Police said that according to Giganto, the maintenance team's members had to do rotations in pulling out the sump pump because they had to go out and breathe fresh air often.

The second pump was taken out August 23, which the police findings' said caused the flooding at the basement.

Police said Ma. Cristine Calope, employee of Robee Stickers store, also smelled the foul odor two days before the explosion.

The police's final report included the statements and findings of an independent probe conducted by experts hired by the Ayala Land Inc. (ALI). Each ALI statement was followed by counter-statement of the police supported by findings.

An ALI statement said, "It is unlikely that biogas was present in the basement since personnel working in and near the basement did not smell hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs and causes nausea and eye and skin irritation."

Earlier statements of the police about the diesel tank were repeated in the final report. It said the mall's diesel tanks, which have an alleged capacity of 13,775 liters, should not have been placed inside the basement.

The police said it violated the "Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code," which allows owners to keep one diesel tank with a capacity of only 2,640 liters inside their establishments.

RDX findings not significant to explosion

Maj. Allan Sollano of the Explosive and Ordnance Battalion of the Philippine Army based in Fort Bonifacio, was identified as the investigator who recovered a plastic bag where a residue of RDX was reportedly traced.

There were reports that the plastic bag was planted by an Army officer, which led the police's recovery of an RDX residue at the mall's ground floor. The Philippine Army had barred the media from interviewing Sollano as it denied that the plastic bag was planted at the blast site.

Ticman also identified the people who will be charged with criminal and administrative cases for the deadly blast.

Among those who will be charged with cases of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries and damage to property are engineers Arnel Gonzales, Jowell Velvez, and Marcelo Botenes of the Ayala Property Management Corporation, and Candelario Valdueza of the Makati Supermarket Corp.; engineer Clifford Arriola, Joselito Buenaventura, Charlie Nepomuceno, Jonathan Ibuna, and Juan Ricafort of Marchem Industrial Sales and Service Inc.

The other persons who will be charged for violation of the Fire Code are engineer Ricardo Cruz, operations manager of Metalline Enterprises and its foreman, Miguel Velasco.

The police will also file gross neglect of duty causing undue injury against member of the Makati City Fire Station identified as Senior Fire Officer 4 Anthony Grey, SFO2 Leonilo Balais, and Senior Inspector Reynaldo Enoc.

Chief Inspector Jose Embang Jr., Makati City Fire Station chief, will be charged administratively "for simple neglect of duty-for failure to review and validate before issuing fire safety inspection certificate."

No charges to be filed vs Ayala Land officials

A source told ABS-CBN earlier that criminal cases would also be filed against officers of Ayala Land Incorporated (ALI), but their names where taken out in the final report.

Puno said no charges were filed against Ayala officials since the evidence as of this time showed no probable cause to indict them since "due care and diligence have been exercised by these officials."

Ticman also showed a Powerpoint copy of US ambassador Kristie Kenney's statement, where she confirmed that the US experts' findings was similar to the police's investigation results.

Puno also dismissed the findings of foreign experts hired by ALI saying the explosion that killed 11 people last year was caused by a powerful bomb.

[baguhin] Kasaysayan

ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau
(AUSTRIA) This Friday, Filipinos in Europe will unite to support a countryman who made it to the grand finals of a major televised musical competition in Austria, reported ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau.

Not only did Vincent Bueno swoon his way to the finals on January 4, of the very grand "Musical! Die Show" [Musical! The Show] of ORF, the Austrian national broadcaster, but he has been on headlines of major newspapers and magazines here.

After Friday’s victory, Bueno’s schedule has tightened not only due to rehearsals but also because of press interviews. He is a crowd favorite with a strong chance of winning on the scheduled big night on January 11.

Vincent with other finalists Gudrun And Eva
At 9:15 pm (4:15 am Manila), Bueno will compete against female finalists Eva Klikovics and Gudrun Ihninger for the much-coveted crown which includes a cash prize of 50,000 euros or three million pesos.

The 21-year-old Pinoy became an overnight sensation when he performed at the first elimination round on November 23, 2007, singing "Hair" from the Broadway musical of the same title.

Musical! Die Show, unlike other well-known singing competitions like the U.S. American Idol, is a broadway-style musical competition where contestants compete in acting and singing and get televotes, meaning televiewers can send their unlimited votes via SMS messages or phone-ins.

For Bueno, it wasn’t easy getting into the Magic Ten because he had to audition and vie against about 400 other hopefuls.

Some Pinoys at the time even doubted whether Bueno would live through the second round because he is Asian; there was much skepticism over whether he could get enough televotes.

But, even if he’s the only Asian among the ten contestants in the eliminations, Bueno got enough televotes, mainly from Europeans, to survive the first round.

His superb voice and regal gait on each performance every Friday night slowly convinced Pinoys that Bueno is a true star in the making.

Vincent Bueno signs autograph
Meanwhile, his European fans multiplied in number, week by week, allowing Bueno to breeze through the seventh and last round on January 4, thanks to the televotes which now included the majority of Pinoys in Austria.

His excellent style, which involves graceful body movements, perfect facial expressions and out-of-this-world gags, has won the hearts of Austrians.

In one performance, Bueno received a standing ovation, coupled with an unstoppable thunderous applause, from the studio crowd: he had dazzled them with his dancing, that included a backflip and a twisting breakdance move on stage, while belting "Singing in the Rain".

Bueno continued to sing and dance even as "rain"--real water--was poured onto him.

Even one of the jurors couldn’t help but comment that Bueno is practically, rather radically, changing theater shows by combining comprehensive performance with rock or punk.

Newspapers dub him as the "darling of the jury."

Jury member Nina Proll, a prominent actress and singer, commented that Bueno has everything that a musical actor needs while Doris Fuhrmann said that he is an absolute showman.

In fact, Bueno’s gigantic following now extends to Pinoys from all over Europe and even North America and the Philippines.

Bueno owes his following in no small measure to his uncle, an IT expert who used the power of the Internet to give maximum exposure to his nephew and score more supporters.

The uncle started uploading clips of Bueno’s performances at the Musical! Die Show on www.digitalpinoy.org, a non-profit Web site for Filipinos in Austria where he is the webmaster.

Although the show is only televised in Austria and Germany, visitors to DigitalPinoy from all over the world are able to watch Bueno’s winning performances and be mesmerized by his natural talent.

Some fans have also posted his performances at www.youtube.com.

Bueno’s victories in the first two rounds even made news on two episodes of ABS-CBN’s Balitang Europe.

Vincent Bueno with family and friends
But who can blame Bueno for fast becoming that great symbol of the Filipino dream?

He finished his Bachelor of Arts in music and theater arts at Vienna’s Conservatory of Music in 2006 with excellent grades.

While still a student, his talent was already very obvious, earning for him offers to perform in theatrical shows.

His most significant act as a performing artist was at "The King & I" where he played as the son of the King. The role of the King was played by renowned Austrian TV moderator, theater performer and singer Alfons Haider, who also happens to be the moderator at the Musical! Die Show.

His mother Cora, who works as a nurse in Vienna, already noticed the early musical beginnings of Bueno.

"Nasa tiyan pa lang siya parang nararamdaman ko nang nagsasayaw sa loob si Vinz. Tapos noong maliit pa lang siya, kahit naglalakad lang sa kalsada, akala mo sumasayaw na," she said.

(Even when Vinz was inside me I felt like he was dancing inside me. And when he was small he look like he was dancing even when he was just walking.)

But it seems that Bueno has it in his blood because his father, Tony, is a "musician of all trades" being a vocalist and also a master at the electric guitar.

Tony performed at high-society night clubs in Vienna for more than twenty years and has been the biggest influence on Bueno.

While other homes with kids have toys that scatter about, the Bueno household is cluttered with electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and other musical instruments so that little "Vinz" was already exposed to music ever since he can remember.

Even without formal training, Bueno already memorized the guitar chords when he was seven years old and at the age of ten, was already a whiz at the keyboard and started composing songs. (Listen to Bueno’s original compositions on: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=115694931)

He also plays the piano as well as the percussion/drums.

He formed his own dance group Streetmachines composed of five boys at age 14. This is where he perfected his dance movements which always featured tumblings and back flips.

What used to be a peer gig became serious business when the Streetmachines started receiving invitations to perform at Pinoy gatherings until finally, Pinoy business entrepreneurs and members of the community sponsored Bueno and his mates to produce their own concert and dance contests.

With his new-found fame, Bueno remains soft-spoken, humble and just a normal son, nephew and friend.

He is just thankful to have made it to the Big Three.

In fact, whatever the outcome is on Friday, Bueno is planning to treat the Filipino community to a "salo-salo" as a sort of a Thanksgiving party to all who supported him.

Like any parent, Bueno’s father can only be very proud and confident.

"I knew it from the start na balang araw eh magiging star itong batang ito dahil bata pa lang siya bilib na ako sa talent niya," Tony said.

(I knew it from the start that one day this child is going to be a star because I believed in his talent even when he was a child.)

As for Bueno, he only has one big promise to his fans: "Ich werde alles geben"! [I will give my best!]

"It's the tears. She pretended to cry, the women felt sorry for her, and she won," said Bill Kristol. So did his page-mate Maureen Dowd, that fierce feminist. So did many of my friends.

Why is it ok for men to get misty and not for women? Why is it assumed everything HRC does is scripted? Why is she seen as bloody Lady Macbeth while Obama is seen as darling Cordelia? Why is a man more sincere than a woman? Why?

Gloria Steinem says we'll do anything not to elect a woman.

"Gender is probably the most restricting force in American life, whether the question is who must be in the kitchen or who could be in the White House. This country is way down the list of countries electing women and, according to one study, it polarizes gender roles more than the average democracy."

That has been my experience as a writer. Whether I have written about women or men, the present or the past, the USA or other countries, politics or poetry, I have been assailed by both genders as self-involved, narcissistic, shrill -- buzz words for women who try to change the status quo.

There's a tee shirt that says: "Women Who Change the World Are Rarely Polite" -- but do we believe it? We buy the tee shirt. We wear the tee shirt. But what do we really believe? Do we allow women the same emotional latitude as men? I doubt it.

But perhaps my experience is skewed. Perhaps the world has changed. I hope so. I want Gloria Steinem to be proven wrong, but I question it. When I think of the way Eleanor Roosevelt was attacked, Geraldine Ferraro was attacked, Bella Abzug was attacked, Nancy Pelosi is attacked, Hillary is attacked, I wonder. I hope like hell to be mistaken. I hope gender doesn't matter. I hope race doesn't matter, but I wonder.

So this will be the election in which we discover how much has changed. Will the politics of fear be upended? Will gender matter? Will race? Will experience? Will the needs of children? Will the crashing economy?

Will we repudiate the values of the military industrial complex or will General Electric, Murdoch's News Corp, Redstone's Viacom Cheney's Halliburton and Bush's beloved Blackwater still find a way to prevail? Will Obama get nominated and then be shot like Dr. King? God forbid -- but America has gone this way before. Will Hillary be nominated and then smeared like Al Gore and John Kerry? Will John McCain's affection for the "surge" affect the fearful as they ponder their choices?

I believe that what we do in the voting booth is scripted in childhood. I vote Democratic because my parents loved Franklin D.Roosevelt. Some of my pals vote Republican because their parents believed in fiscal probity. They have forgotten that the GOP no longer believes in it. Perhaps I can't know how independents feel. But we will find out.

Let's just learn patience and try not to predict the outcomes in this amazing year. Yes, pundits have to pund. Columnists need to fill up columns. TV newsreaders need to seem prescient. But maybe we can't predict the changes that have surged in America as we watched rich, old, white men lie and cheat and steal elections, as we watched them enrich their cronies while impoverishing average Americans, as we saw their hunger for oil and their disdain for our lovely green planet, as we watched, horrified, as Mr. Kerry and Ms. Pelosi feared changing course more than they feared the Repugnicans.

So now we have to do the hardest thing of all: not rush to judgment, wait, cultivate watchfulness not opinion mongering. Can we do it?

Our democracy may depend on it.

Kafka had this word over his desk: WARTEN (WAIT). Every writer must learn to do that while the unconscious works and underground forces prevail. Maybe countries have to do that too.

The eternal judgmentalism of our crappy news media makes that very hard. But this time we have to learn it so as not to foul up the chance of change. The chance of change is precious. It is also fragile. Let's give change a chance.

Two people died and at least 40 others were hurt as throngs of devotees fought their way to get near the Black Nazarene after hundreds of policemen ushered it out of the Quiapo Church in Manila Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. Eva Rose Cabulayan of the Ospital ng Maynila said one of the fatalities, Alex Radovan, 44, was brought by ambulance of the Ospital ng Tondo around 2 p.m. The other fatality was 51-year-old Cecilia Fajardo.

Carol Rondoles, nursing attendant at the Ospital ng Maynila, said that according to Radovan’s wife, Habiba, her husband got overwhelmed by the crowd of devotees and suffered a heart attack.

The Manila Police District, meanwhile, clarified that Radovan died in the Carriedo area, which was not included in the procession route.

In a related report, the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) identified 14 of those injured as Jose Angeles, Carmelita Cruz, Josephine Rubio, Larida Kidula, Rolyente Rosilyo, Mon Rivera, Cesar Untalan, Mark Anthony Ballesteros, Anthony Santiago, Raymund Palacio, Moneta Roselya, Alex Rodoban, Delfin Palacio, and Linda Malbas.

Twenty-six other unidentified people were also hurt during the procession, PNRC said.

Nineteen public and private schools in Manila, meanwhile, suspended their classes.

Policemen placed themselves around the Black Nazarene as it was being brought to Villalobos Street where thousands of devotees waited.

The image went through an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 crowd for at least 10 minutes before being finally brought to Plaza Miranda and reached Villalobos Street. The procession started around 1:40 p.m.

Police said they are expecting up to three million devotees to flood Quezon Boulevard and other streets around Quiapo where the black image will be brought.

Police and the local government of Manila prepared for at least three days before the feast to avoid casualties.

Procession route
The procession is expected to last up to five hours. From Villalobos, the black image will be brought straight to Palanca. The procession will then turn right to P. Gomez and then Paterno and Quezon Boulevard.

From the boulevard, the procession will turn left to Globo de Oro and then Guano, Arlegui, Fraternal Vergara, Duque de Alba, Castillejos, Hornecio, and back to Arlegui, Nepomuceno, Aguila, Carcer, Hidalgo, and Barbosa.

The procession will return to Globo de Oro, right to Palanca to Villalobos and back to the Minor Balisica of the Black Nazarene.

ABS-CBN News correspondent TJ Manotoc reported that even before the procession started, 37 people were brought to a makeshift clinic of the Philippine National Red Cross for first aid treatment.

A footage aired over ABS-CBN News Channel showed two women and a man who fainted being carried out of the crowd and brought to nearby medical teams situated near the church.

The local government formed Task Force Nazareno, composed of five teams that would handle the crowd, security and provide medical assistance to the thousands of devotees.

Hundreds of devotees started trooping in front of the church as early as 4 a.m.

Senior Superintendent Leo Quizon, Manila Police District officer-in-charge, said Tuesday that at least 1,000 policemen are deployed around the district. The military's National Capital Region Command will also deploy soldiers to assist Manila policemen in securing the devotees.

The Manila police deployed eight mobile cars to areas where the Black Nazarene is expected to visit. Three teams of the Special Weapons and Tactics and two anti-bomb squad teams have also been deployed in Quiapo.

Augmenting the police are 400 crime watch volunteers and four firetrucks. At least 13 medical teams of the police, the PNRC, a city-run hospital in Manila and 15 ambulances were also in place to assist casualties during the procession.

Just how close did a Brazlilian bombshell threaten the six-year marriage of Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz-Montano?

After husband and wife gave their own statements to the media, nothing else was heard about the issue. Cesar had issued a firm denial against the rumor, while his wife in a separate statement hinted that something was wrong in the marriage but had nothing to do with either Brazilians or bombshells.

Amidst the deafening silence that followed the rumors, abs-cbnNEWS.com received information from a rarely heard voice: that of Angela, Cesar's daughter from a previous marraige.

Angela, who manages Cesar's Italian-themed bar Bellisimo Ristorante in Timog, deserves our gratitude for her patience regarding this writer's nosiness: despite her busy schedule with accounting duties in the restaurant and what not, she was still able to squeeze in bits of conversation.

This writer had wanted to speak to Cesar and Sunshine but since they were unavailable, stopping by Bellisimo seemed a good idea in case Angela was willing to talk.

"Ang mas mabuti po sa ganyang mga controversy, no comment na lang ang isagot ko. Kasi po, mas hahaba pa ang usapan. So, no comment po talaga ako riyan," she said.

('No comment' is the best answer to controversies like that because I wouldn't want to drag the issue longer than it already has. Sorry 'no comment'.)

After seeing how busy Angerla really was as she closely monitored the bills and payments coming her way, and writing down in a columnar sheet the figures attached to the receipts, we asked her if she had any idea whether Sunshine was at the Montanos residence in nearby Scout Rallos.

"Hindi ko po alam. Busy po ako rito sa restaurant kaya hindi ko po na-monitor si Ate Sunshine do'n," Angela replied.

(I don't know. I'm too busy here in the restaurant so I couldn't monitor whether Ate Sunshine is there. Editor: "Ate", pronounced "ah-te" is a Filipino term of respect meaning, "elder sister".)

When work wasn't so hectic anymore, we found out that Angela was quite willing to talk even just a bit about her family.

"Yan naman pong ganyang mga balita ay hindi na bago. Lagi naman po 'yang nangyayari kay Daddy at kay Ate Sunshine kaya wala nang nagtataka sa amin sa ganyan," she later said.

(Those kinds of rumors aren't new anymore. That's a recurrent thing between my Dad and Ate Sunshine so no one in our family is surprised anymore.)

So how was their New Year celebration considering the timing of the rumors?

"As usual po, the entire family went to their house. Kami po, nakipag-New Year's eve sa kanila ni Ate Sunshine. Sama-sama po kaming sumalubong sa New Year. Para namang walang nangyari kina Daddy at kay Ate Sunshine. Ang saya-saya namin."

(We spent our New Year's eve with Dad and Ate Sunshine. We welcomed the New Year together. We didn't notice anything wrong between Dad and Ate Sunshine. We enjoyed ourselves very much.)

This writer also learned from Angela that before Cesar flew off to Macau, China for the shoot of ABS-CBN's newest action drama series "Palos" with co-star Jake Cuenca, he patched things up with Sunshine--whatever it really was that caused a rift between them.

"Ganyan naman po talaga sa mag-asawa. Hindi talaga mawawala ang mga samaan ng loob at konting di-pagkakaunawaan (That's normal to married couples. Misunderstandings and petty quarrels are part of life.)," she said.

An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 devotees flocked to the Quiapo district early Wednesday for the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene, police said.

The Manila city government has formed Task Force Nazareno, composed of five teams, that will handle the crowd, security and provide medical assistance to the thousands of devotees expected to flock at the heart of the Quiapo district.

Hundreds of devotees started trooping in front of Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene famously known as the Quiapo church as early as 4 a.m.

Senior Superintendent Leo Quizon, Manila Police District officer-in-charge, said Tuesday that at least 1,000 policemen are deployed around the district. The military's National Capital Region Command will also deploy soldiers to assist Manila policemen in securing the devotees.

The Manila police have also deployed eight mobile cars to areas where the Black Nazarene is expected to visit. Three teams of the Special Weapons and Tactics and two anti-bomb squad teams have also been deployed in Quiapo.

Augmenting the police are 400 crime watch volunteers and four firetrucks. At least 13 medical teams of the police, the Philippine National Red Cross and city-run hospital in Manila and 15 ambulances have also been put on standby to assist casualties during the procession.

To assure a zero-injury feast, the Church and the Manila City government decided to break tradition by assigning 200 Manila policemen to pull out the Black Nazarene out of the basilica. The black image of Jesus Christ will be turned over by the 200 policemen to hundreds of waiting devotees at Villalobos Street. The procession starts at 2 p.m.

Devotees usually throw towels to people handling the image during the procession. Devotees have long believed that touching the Black Nazarene will yield miraculous blessings.

The Black Nazarene has been housed at the Church of the Black Nazarene since 1787. It was brought to Manila by a Spanish priest in 1607 aboard a ship that caught fire. The image was burnt, thus, it came to be known as the Black Nazarene.

The Light Rail Transit announced Wednesday that it will allot additional train rides as devotees are expected to crowd its stations.

The Manila City government will close the southbound lane of Quezon Boulevard for the procession. The northbound lane starting from Plaza Lawton, meanwhile, will remain open.

Other Manila streets and roads that will be closed for the procession are España Avenue, Lerma, P. Campa, Andalucia, Fugoso, Palanca, Estero, Cegado Road, Isetann service road, Legarda, San Rafael, P. Casal, Concepcion, Aguila and Arlegui.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye on Sunday said he is confident that 2008 would be another banner year for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) marked by increased job opportunities and higher wages.

In his weekly column "The View From the Palace," Bunye based his prediction on the shifting employment profile of Filipino migrant workers from non-skilled to skilled.

He said that unlike in previous years, most of OFWs leaving the country now are professionals and skilled workers.

"In 2006, 60 percent of Filipinos working abroad were professionals and skilled workers. In 2007, the deployment ratio became 73-27 in favor of skilled workers," Bunye said.

He described this change in the employment pattern of OFWs over the last two years as no less than dramatic.

"This explains why despite the constant level of deployment, foreign exchange remittances has been increasing," he added.

Earlier this week, Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said the country’s track record of sending one million OFWs workers abroad in the past two years would be topped this year.

He said that though it is not a policy of the government to send workers abroad, OFWs continue to help sustain the country’s economic growth through their remittances, especially Filipino migrant workers belonging to the higher pay levels.

Brion said one reason for the increased OFW remittances in 2007 was that "more professional and skilled workers were employed abroad than non-skilled workers."

He said Filipinos with higher opportunities for deployment overseas are those coming from the medical and health, information and technology, and services sectors.

Brion explained that contrary to the fears voiced by some sectors, the recruitment of nurses for overseas jobs was not affected by the nursing board examination scandal last year.

The demand for Filipino nurses in Europe, Canada and even Saudi Arabia remains high, he added.

In fact, last year the Philippines could only send about 3,000 of the 5,000 nurses needed by Saudi Arabia, the labor official said.

Brion assured, however, that the Department of Labor and Employment and the Department of Health would also adopt a new policy in the deployment of nurses so as not to unduly affect the operations of local hospitals and clinics.

AiAi files child abuse raps vs Manila store employees

Comedian AiAi de las Alas lodged child abuse charges before the National Bureau of Investigation against two employees of a convenience store outlet who allegedly maltreated her 16-year-old son last month.

De las Alas was accompanied by her lawyer Rowena Guanzon when she filed child abuse, grave threat and illegal detention charges against a store attendant and a security guard of the Mini Stop store branch on Padre Noval Street in Sampaloc, Manila.

One of the respondents was identified as Melvin Buceta.

In her two-page complaint, de las Alas said the incident took place after her 16-year-old son purchased some items from the store on December 8.

After buying the items, the boy opened the door and asked his friends if they needed anything else from the store.

However, the attendant thought the boy was about to escape with a tube of candy that he allegedly pocketed.

The attendant immediately accosted the boy and brought him to the storage room where he was threatened with bodily harm if he fails to admit to the crime.

“Naawa ako sa anak ko dahil for a 16-year old, bakit kailangan nila magtulong-tulong for him dahil sa kendi? (I felt pity for my son. Did they have to gang up on him because of a tube of candy?),” de las Alas said.

The comedian said her son told her about the incident only during the Christmas break. She immediately tried to get in touch with the manager of the outlet.

“Sabi ko hinihingi ko lang naman iyung middle initial nung tao. Sabi niya hindi ko po maibibigay sa inyo kasi Christmas party po namin, sabing ganoon. At huwag kayong tatawag kasi Christmas party namin,” de las Alas said.

(I said that I only wanted the person's middle initial. He said that he can't give it to me because it was their Christymas party. I was told not to call them up because it was their Christmas party.)

De las Alas then sought the help of a local official in Manila who talked to the store’s management. The official was told that Buceta was no longer connected to the outlet.

“Pero noong a few days ago, Saturday ba Ai? Nakita pa noong anak ni Miss de las Alas iyung same accused, iyung respondent na pumasok doon sa store,” said Guanzon.

(But a few days ago, it's a Saturday, right Ai? Miss de las Alas's son saw the same accused, the respondent, enter the store.)

This prompted the actress to file a complaint in behalf of her son before the NBI.

“The compelling reason talaga is he violated the child's rights, he beat him up, he illegally detained him,” Guanzon added.

ABS-CBN News tried to get a statement from the store's management but was directed to proceed to Mini Stop’s main office. With a report from Jorge Cariño

JAKARTA - Former Indonesian president Suharto, who was rushed to hospital in critical condition last week, deteriorated on Tuesday as doctors tried to avert multiple organ failure, a member of his medical team said.

Another doctor said there was little room for optimism.

Suharto, 86, was admitted to Pertamina Hospital, one of Jakarta's top medical centers, on Friday where a team of 40 doctors is treating him for heart, lung and kidney problems.

"Suharto is in a highly unstable condition and requires intensive monitoring," Mardjo Soebiandono, the head of the medical team treating the former five-star general, told a news conference.

"More fluid infiltrated his lungs and some blood was seen in his feces and urine that prompted his hemoglobin to drop," he said, adding that Suharto had been given a blood transfusion.

Reporters at the hospital saw Suharto being wheeled out of the radiology unit, accompanied by his three daughters, who were crying.

Juniarti Hatta, a cardiovascular expert and a member of the medical team, later told reporters the former president's left heart chamber had swollen to a point that could lead to heart failure.

"The deterioration left us with little optimism," she said, adding that Suharto could be heading for multiple organ failure.

Suharto ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for over three decades until he was ousted in 1998 in the face of a tumultuous pro-democracy movement and economic crisis.

The former strongman, who has been living largely out of the public eye in a family compound in the heart of Jakarta, has suffered from various ailments in recent years, including intestinal bleeding and strokes.

Critics say he and his family amassed billions during his rule, but the former president and members of his family have denied any wrongdoing.

Suharto was previously charged with graft but escaped prosecution when he was deemed too ill to stand trial.

He and his family are still involved in a couple of high-profile court cases.

The sudden deterioration in his health over the weekend prompted some senior politicians and one of Suharto's daughters to call for legal proceedings against him to be dropped.

But the attorney-general said on Monday that his office would press ahead with a civil case against Suharto.

A family home was saved from burning down after roly-poly mum Jenny Marsey’s size 20 KNICKERS were used as a fire blanket.

Son John, 18, was frying bread when the pan caught fire, sending flames up to the ceiling.

Resourceful cousin Darren Lines, 23, grabbed Jenny’s £4.99 Marks & Spencer pants from a pile of washing, soaked them in water and flung them over the flames.

Fifteen-stone Jenny, 53, of Hartlepool, Cleveland, said: “I’m lucky my knickers are like a parachute! If they were skimpy they’d have been no use.”

hi all! here's some fyi of the young inventor from Jagna, ms Ginger assignment completed.

14-yr-old inventor rises from Jagna

A 14-year-old boy claims the slot as the newest Dungog-Kaliwat Jagnaanon pride and young inventor. The young achiever, Joernie Olivar, is a sophomore student of Faraon National High School (FNHS) who never aspire for the world's highest award but became incidental scientist from his gross eagerness to discover something useful to human beings. His invention won in the Region VII tilt on Science Investigatory Project individual category for private and public high schools on November 28-29 in Cebu City. Joernie is the son of Ernesto and Luz Olivar of barangay Looc.

He invented a water coloring substance out of home-grown materials under the tutelage of his mentor-trainor Candelaria Custodio, which won the school level search and climbed up to the recently-concluded regional contest. Escorted by his mentor, Joernie made a courtesy call at the 6th Sangguniang Bayan of Jagna on its regular session Monday last week. Before the local legislators, the young inventor briefly presented the procedural scheme on the production of his winning invention and a set of documentary evidence that he neatly posted on a three-fold wooden board. Speaking in behalf of the FNHS family, Custodio thanked the strong support of the local government unit led by Mayor Exuperio Lloren as she proceeded in asking for more financial and moral succor for the coming national level competition to be held in Baguio City sometime in February 2008. Manny Pacquiao spent the whole day Sunday filming commercials and plans to spend a few more days in Gen. Santos City before beginning his serious training for his March 15 rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao arrived from a much-needed US vacation with his family early Saturday morning, and in the afternoon spent an hour sweating it out in a light workout at the Wild Card Gym in Parañaque.

On Sunday morning, Pacquiao put on his tracksuit and jogged in Calamba, Laguna. But there were cameras around as it was part of a new commercial he’s doing for Alaxan.

The filming started at 10 in the morning and was over early in the afternoon. The boxer was doing another commercial as of 4 p.m. but his business manager Eric Pineda did not give any other details.

"He’s just wrapping up these commitments before he goes to the US to train for the Marquez fight," said Pineda, adding that Pacquiao plans to keep in shape by running and doing exercises in the morning.

Pineda said Pacquiao is booked for a flight to the US on Jan. 14, just a day before he is scheduled to begin a heavy two-month workout under Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

Pacquiao will fly to Gen. Santos City Monday.

Marquez, the reigning WBC super-featherweight champion, is reportedly a mile ahead in training and in fact even worked out on Christmas day when Pacquiao, his family and Roach were vacationing in Boracay.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum Sunday told Viva Sports that a planned fight with Britain’s Ricky Hatton on November is slowly turning into "a reality."

Arum met Pacquiao as the boxer was vacationing in Las Vegas, and over lunch they had a chance to talk to HBO president Ross Greenberg who was then in New York with key persons from the Hatton camp.

"It was funny because he (Greenberg) was together with the Ricky Hatton people for lunch in New York and they were talking about fighting Manny at the end of the year. So that’s a reality," said Arum.

The legendary Top Rank president recently said he’s not "looking too far ahead" since Marquez, the rugged counter-puncher from Mexico, "is already too much to handle."

But for the Hatton fight, or even that against WBC lightweight champ David Diaz in June or July, to happen, Arum said the 29-year-old Pacquiao has "got to win" against Marquez.

Britney Spears Out of Hospital
Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Britney Spears left a hospital on Saturday where she was admitted following a confrontation at her home, which ended in a fit of hysterics by the troubled pop star, several media outlets reported.

A number of celebrity Web sites said Spears was visited Saturday by Dr. Phil McGraw, who counsels people on his popular television program, "The Dr. Phil Show."

A spokeswoman for the hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, declined comment citing patient confidentiality, and a representative for McGraw could not be reached.

Spears, 26, was hospitalized on Friday when trouble erupted between her and representatives of her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, who went to Spears' home to pick up their two young sons from a weekend visitation.

The pop singer, who spent much of 2007 in and out of alcohol and drug rehab and battling legal problems, became hysterical, was taken from her home on a stretcher and transported to Cedars-Sinai via ambulance, television and Web sites reported.

Federline's attorneys went to a Los Angeles family court on Friday and obtained a ruling that suspended Spears' visitation rights to her two sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, until January 14.

On Saturday, celebrity Web site reported that Spears was demanding to leave the hospital, and that she might appear on "The Dr. Phil Show" on Monday.

Web sites for celebrity TV shows "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Insider" reported that McGraw walked Spears to her car. The New York Post's cited a "family insider" as saying Spears had "a complete nervous breakdown."

None of the reports could be confirmed.

Spears lost primary custody of her sons to Federline after her life spun out of control following their divorce in November 2006.

Since then, she has spent time in rehab, been charged with hit-and-run driving and exhibited unusual behavior.

Spears is currently undergoing court-ordered random drug and alcohol tests and parenting lessons.

She became a teen pop phenomenon in the 1990s. In October, she made her musical comeback with the single, "Gimme More," and an album, "Blackout," that briefly hit No. 2 on the U.S. pop album charts.
