By observing these simple tips, you can start improving your investment strategies. This will result in better returns, and give you larger metrics from which to observe market fluctuations specific to your preferred investments. In time, you’ll not only have a better class of investments, but also the experience and understanding of the market to confidently trade or hold, knowing the associated risks and acting accordingly.

4. Avoid the Herd Mentality

This is perhaps the killer of many a would be trader. While there are many historical examples of herd mentality dictating poor trade practices, such as the dot com bust in the last century, a more recent example would be Facebook. Because nearly everyone uses Facebook, when news of an IPO was announced, everyone jumped on board. Shortly after that time, the stocks nosedived. Following the loss of value, more scrutiny was applied to the business of Facebook. It soon became known that the company was not necessarily as good an investment as it may have first appeared to be. Careful investors saw this, and avoided the initial gain of a few dollars in share value against the potentially greater loss if the stock value dropped.

3. Don’t Trade More Than Once a Month

Double checking your decisions is never bad idea, but trading too often can kill your investment, whether it is from transaction fees, or just simple loss in terms of time versus reward. A good plan for a properly diversified portfolio is to review once per month, and make trades when advantageous. In particular, maintain an awareness of market performance and growth factors specific to your portfolio. Don’t just trade just to be trading. Make sure you know both the long and short term impacts of any decisions you make.

2. Diversify to Minimize Exposure

Many people believe that investing in several different areas of the market counts as ‘diversifying’ their portfolio, but in fact diversity is accomplished with much broader strokes. Investments should be diversified not only across geographic areas, but also across various industry sectors and classes of asset. This offers much greater protection and resilience in terms of bounce back when one industry or stock may be underperforming.

1. Understand Where You Are Investing

This goes beyond the old adage of knowing the company you are investing in, and takes it a step further. Simply knowing the company you are investing in is no longer enough, as there are a multitude of possible investments you could make, such as Bonds, Exchange Traded Funds, and Stocks, to name a few. A firm understanding of not only who you are investing your money with, but what vehicle those funds are being invested in, is key to successful long term investments.

If you’re investing, which you should be, then you’ll want to make sure to avoid some of the more common pitfalls. While each of these may seem like common sense, much like eating healthy, people just don’t pay as much attention to them until it is too late. By educating yourself about these risks, you can improve your overall investment strategies, enabling you to come out ahead of the game where you might have taken a costly plunge. Read on for the details.

Joavan, b***t, man ka oi! Putlan ka namo og liog. Mag star dancer na ka diha. Humuon ka namo og balbacua. Wala kay agi. Kami daghang gipamatay. Ako tulo ang kasong murder,” sumala sa usa ka piniriso sa city jail nga nagsinggitsinggit.

But, the former Canadian enforcer thinks otherwise. "US authorities have fired upon and disabled vessels from other countries in the past and will do so again. I personally would have preferred we did not arm our vessels, but having taken the decision to do so, it would be irresponsible not to use the weapons and rely on the goodwill of others to enforce our laws."

So central indeed is sovereignty to a people's self-image that nations have gone to war to erase any doubt about their readiness to uphold it when it is threatened. But, precisely because war is costly and no nation should court one, governments have the duty to avoid provocative language, and to be circumspect in the use of lethal force.

The Canadian example shows how this form of restraint can be built into a government's operational responses. But, even more important, it illustrates the need to build reservoirs of goodwill between nations that can drown the most bellicose rhetoric from their leaders.  COPYRIGHT: ASIA NEWS NETWORK

"I relayed the permission for our patrol vessel to fire warning shots, which they did, but to no avail. The fishing boat tried to ram the patrol boat and did in fact hit it a glancing blow with no serious damage resulting. Canadian authorities would not approve the actual firing on the vessel, however, so it escaped into the US coastal zone. The US coast guard apprehended it and did its own investigation with our cooperation. I don't recall the actual outcome, however, although I do recall charges were laid in the US court and our enforcement staff gave evidence in that trial."

Some in the US media found it objectionable that the Canadian patrol boat was actually poised to fire on the fleeing American fishing boat.
#23315
One may appreciate the complexity of this setup, and the sensitivities that inform it, by imagining a patrol boat out in the North Atlantic that has to communicate nearly every move it makes to an operations room in Ottawa, which in turn has to secure approvals from responsible officials in government, before even the first warning shot can be fired.

"When I got the call from the patrol boat captain, he was in hot pursuit of a US fishing vessel that was caught in the zone but refused to heave to and allow a boarding party to board his vessel. They turned and ran for the US area. We were in touch with US authorities and they agreed to stay back and observe until the fishing vessel actually entered their 3-mile coastal zone.
#23316
This was the context in which the incident that our reader from Canada narrates took place.

"Prior to this incident the Canadian government had decided to arm its patrol vessels and enforcement staff. I was personally opposed to this but politics won the day and we armed our staff... We did institute operational procedures for the use of force which required not only extensive training for our staff but [also] an escalation of force procedure that required higher levels of approval before using lethal force. The actual firing on a vessel required the approval of a member of parliament responsible for fisheries. The first level, firing a warning shot across the bow, required a deputy minister's approval."
#23317
The United States tried to secure a share of this rich resource by proposing joint management of the Canadian part, but Canada did not flinch: It was its turn to say no. The United States next proposed the creation of a buffer zone. Canada countered by proposing that each country instead carve its buffer zone from its own side of the boundary.

Clearly, while the governments of both countries remained on good terms, and never gave up exploring areas of cooperation, the same goodwill could not always be assumed with regard to the fishing communities on both sides of the demarcation line. Indeed, each side expected their respective governments to vigilantly protect their territory from intruders and poachers.
#23318
A joint management and development of the resources of the disputed waters, the most logical recourse for nations that regard each other as allies, was seriously considered. But the negotiations failed. The two countries thus agreed to submit the issue for arbitration by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, using as parameters the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

In 1984, after five years of hearings, the ICJ laid down the maritime boundaries across the Gulf of Maine, assigning to the United States the bulk of the disputed territorial waters. By chance, the much smaller portion of Georges Bank that Canada got encompassed nearly the entire ground of the valuable scallop fishery.
#23319
Like siblings quarreling over inheritance, sometimes the closest neighbours find themselves in conflict situations that threaten the fundamental assumptions of their relationship. Such was the maritime dispute between Canada and its next-door neighbour and valuable ally, the United States, over the rich fishing ground known as Georges Bank on the eastern coast of the North American continent.

In the late '70s, both countries began asserting the metes and bounds of their respective exclusive economic zones. It was inevitable that these would overlap.

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - To my last column on the current conflict between the Philippines and Taiwan, a country with whom, until recently, we have had only friendly relations, a reader from Canada has written a most thoughtful rejoinder.

He wishes to remain anonymous, but, with his permission, I will quote from the rich account he has shared of his experience as a former official of the Canadian department of fisheries in charge of enforcing maritime fishing boundaries. His job entailed protecting his country's fishery from poachers coming from other countries.

The Monkey And The Cat

Once upon a time a Cat and a Monkey lived as pets in the same house. They were great friends and were constantly in all sorts of mischief together. What they seemed to think of more than anything else was to get something to eat, and it did not matter much to them how they got it.

One day they were sitting by the fire, watching some chestnuts roasting on the hearth. How to get them was the question.

"I would gladly get them," said the cunning Monkey, "but you are much more skillful at such things than I am. Pull them out and I'll divide them between us."

Pussy stretched out her paw very carefully, pushed aside some of the cinders, and drew back her paw very quickly. Then she tried it again, this time pulling a chestnut half out of the fire. A third time and she drew out the chestnut. This performance she went through several times, each time singeing her paw severely. As fast as she pulled the chestnuts out of the fire, the Monkey ate them up.

Now the master came in, and away scampered the rascals, Mistress Cat with a burnt paw and no chestnuts. From that time on, they say, she contented herself with mice and rats and had little to do with Sir Monkey.

10. China Mobile

Brand Value: $55.4 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: 18%

What Happened: China Mobile is the largest mobile carrier and brand in China, so it's a no-brainer that it's one of the most valuable brands in the world. "There are more mobile phone subscribers in China than in the U.S.," Yuan said.
#23329
9. Visa

Brand Value: $56 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: 46%

What Happened: A key way to bolster global presence is to sponsor the Olympics. But that's not the only thing that upped Visa's brand value so drastically. As one of the most trusted names in non-cash payments, Visa has gained clout in the world of online shopping and mobile payments.
#23330
8. Marlboro

Brand Value: $69.4 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: -6%

What Happened: Marlboro is a top 10 regular, which goes to show that even though smoking is restricted in the U.S. doesn't mean that the rest of the world has laid off the habit. "Marlboro has consistently invested in the brand ever since its inception," Yuan said. "The rugged cowboy is very strong and consistent globally."

To put it another way, "about 25% of world's population are smokers, and they use it 5 to 10 times a day. I don't drink 10 bottles of water a day." That's getting your brand out there.
#23331
7. Microsoft

Brand Value: $69.8 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: -9%

What Happened: As a $70 billion brand, Microsoft is in great shape even in spite of a 9% value decrease. Microsoft is a powerhouse and has a reputation as one of the strongest tech brands in the business. But, Yuan notes, "with consumers, there's confusion as to where Microsoft fits." The company's fortune is largely tied with the PC business, but it has emerged on the mobile scene with the Surface and other devices. The company went through a major rebranding in the summer of 2012 to stay relevant.
#23332
6. AT&T

Brand Value: $75.5 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: 10%

What Happened: AT&T is another company to gain value due to the increasing U.S. consumption of mobile products. For a long time, the service provider had an exclusive deal with the iPhone, so it became synonymous with the new technology. What's really interesting, however, is that even when Apple opened the iPhone up to Samsung and T-Mobile, AT&T's value didn't go down.
#23333
5. Coca-Cola

Brand Value: $78.4
Percent Change v. 2012: 6%

What Happened: "What's consistently impressive about Coca-Cola is its ability to innovate," Yuan said. "People think that soda consumption is declining, but Coke is turning the business on its head." For example, this year Coca-Cola released a series of freestyle machines which allows consumers and retailers to mix their own flavors of the soda syrup to make their own individual Coca-Cola. The company is constantly innovating and staying fresh.
#23334
4. McDonald's

Brand Value: $90.3 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: -5%

What Happened: Yuan noted that one of McDonald's gifts was the ability to listen to consumers' sentiments and adapt, particularly to growing health concerns. "It has come out with a much healthier menu with apple slices, oatmeal, and a Chicken McWrap which has done well," he said.

McDonald's is also gaining a stronghold in the coffee space, which should be an interesting new endeavor to follow.
#23335
3. IBM

Brand Value: $112.5 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: -3%

What Happened: At $112.5 billion, IBM's three percent value decrease is not a substantial figure. IBM is known as a company that consistently delivers year after year, Yuan told BI. And it is particularly hailed in the B2B sphere.

Yuan also noted that its Ogilvy-made "Smarter Planet" campaign, in which the company explained its plans to help clients innovate and make the world a better place, inspired consumers to believe in the brand.
#23336
2. Google

Brand Value: $113.7 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: 5%

What Happened: Google has effectively taught consumers that it is more than just a search-based company. With maps, mail, shopping, and more, Google is integrated into everyone's lives. The company also made recent headlines about its new contribution to the hardware world in the form of Google Glass. "It will be interesting to see how Google Glass will contribute  to the brand value, but now it's too soon to tell," Yuan said.
#23337
1. Apple

Brand Value: $185 billion
Percent Change v. 2012: 1%

What Happened: In spite of harsh Wall Street analysis and media speculation regarding Tim Cook's leadership capabilities, Apple continues to be a strong brand in the eyes of consumers â€" a major value measurement for Millward Brown. "Despite what the press says and stock market says," Yuan noted, "Apple in the eyes of the consumers is the gold standard."

In the last eight years, Apple's value has increased 1,045% â€" only topped by Subway's meteoric 5,145% rise. (Although Subway still hasn't broken the top 20.)
#23338
Millward Brown VP Oscar Yuan told Business Insider that this is because the company ranks brands based not only on publicly available financial information, but "the second half, which is the unique part, is that we take in the consumer sentiment." Millward Brown polls more than 200 million consumers from 43 countries annually. In spite of everything, "Apple, in the eyes of consumers, is the gold standard."

The brands that really won this year were those tied to emerging mobile capabilities â€" be it AT&T for servicing tablets and smartphones or Visa for dominating online payment methods.
#23339
By Laura Stampler | Business Insider â€" Wed, May 22, 2013

In spite of struggling stock prices and loud public uncertainty over Tim Cook's innovative capabilities, Apple is once again the most valuable brand in the world, for the year 2013.

Every year, BrandZ and Millward Brown Optimor calculate and rank brands based on their global value. And even though Apple's growth rate decreased by 95%, the tech giant's brand value still increased by 1% from 2012 to a a whopping $185 billion.

Are your neighbors driving you crazy? Well, if you're the owner of this unique house, problem solved. Balancing on a rock in the middle of the Drina River in Serbia, the tiny one-room home was built in 1968. Pounded by floods and high winds, it continues to stand strong against the elements of time. The structure, located near the town of Bajina Basta, has become a well-known attraction for visitors to the area. -- http://news.yahoo.com/photos/

The new game is expected to generate at least P10 billion revenue annually.

Under the PLB guidelines, local governments, congressional districts and provincial governments, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), are entitled to a certain percentage of the proceeds of the legal numbers games.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man who recently got married in Manila claimed his share of the 6/45 lotto jackpot of the May 20 draw he won with another bettor from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
#23348
For the Visayas and Mindanao, Negros Occidental tops the list with applicants from the six congressional districts, including the cities of San Carlos, Silayan and Sipalay City.

Applications were also filed for Calape in Bohol, Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City, Southern Leyte, Iloilo and Zamboanga City in Mindanao.

PCSO is launching the new numbers game to replace the STL which has become a front of jueteng operations.
#23349
According to PCSO records, there are PLB applications for the provinces of Pangasinan, Bulacan, Zambales, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Pampanga, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Quirino and Cagayan.

At least seven applications were filed for Pangasinan.

For Southern Tagalog, there were applicants from Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Quezon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Sorsogon.

Gaming corporations from the National Capital Region also applied for PBL in Makati, Marikina, Pasay, Quezon City and Taguig.
#23350
He said the PLB and other legal numbers games, once in full swing, are expected to draw the people away from jueteng and other illegal betting games.

Rojas said the PCSO would also introduce new games that will counter masiao, popularly known as the “last two” illegal numbers game.

“The PCSO will introduce legal alternative to illegal numbers game that will bring in government revenues, create employment in the provinces and generate charity funds for health-related assistance to the poor and needy,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has given small town lottery (STL) gaming firms until June 30 to operate, to allow the entry of the Pambansang Loterya ng Bayan (PLB).

PCSO general manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas II said the implementing rules and regulations for the PLB are now under review by Malacañang, and are expected to be approved soon.

In case of any delay, STL operators may be given an extension on a monthly basis, Rojas said. This is to prevent any vacuum from income generated by the STL that amounted to more than P4 billion last year.

That is one version to explain why Ratziel’s name included the Roman numerals CCCII, which stands for “302.”

“I decided to name my youngest the ‘Last of the Rufinos,’” San Juan wrote in his essay.

San Juan said 302 was also the number of his Masonic Lodge, and Ratziel was born on the eve of the lodge’s anniversary.

But the better justification for the lengthy names comes from poet Margaret Atwood, he said in his CNN iReport account: “The Eskimos had fifty-two names for snow because it was important to them: There ought to be as many for love.”

:)
#23358
“Quite naturally, a man with a flair for style and a way with words like our father Rufino Jr., with the blessing of our mother, Remedios, would name their four sons Rufino Ray III, Rufino Ranulfo IV, Rufino Ramil V and Rufino Ronaldo VI,” he said.

Names for love

San Juan said he had since rationalized that his decision to provide his children their unique names “put a finishing touch to my father’s antics.”
#23359
“It turned out the precedents were my first two kids,” San Juan told the Inquirer.

He has taken pains to explain his odd name choices for his children.

In an essay titled, “Origins of the Species,” which he sent to the Inquirer, San Juan said everything began with his father, Rufino Jr., who named all his sons Rufino, following a legacy that began with his grandfathers, Rufino San Juan Sr. and Rufino Zarate.
#23360
“In their original birth certificates, my first two kids’ given names (20 each) appear as ‘see attached’ (which refers to the three extra pages where the names were printed). The space provided in the official form wouldn’t suffice. In the case of my third kid, his given names (40 in all, plus a suffix) were typed in full on the top margin, overwriting the read-before-accomplishing portion,” San Juan wrote.

Family legacy

He said the NSO almost stopped him from registering Ratziel’s 40 namesâ€"until they were informed about two precedents.
#23361
Another obstacle

But the names of Ramille Lewisse, Ramuel and Ratziel again became an obstacle when their passports needed renewal.

San Juan posted the account at the CNN iReport, (http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-55822), in August 2008: “We’re a Filipino family based in Texas. Last week, we went to the Philippine Consular Office in Chicago to avail of the new machine-readable passports. I was told by the staff that the application papers of my three kids will be referred to the national office in Manila before being processed. I was informed that the new passport can only accommodate 30 characters for a given name.”
#23362
The Department of Foreign Affairs found a way to list down the children’s complete names on their passports (the old green passport, where entries were handwritten), he said. It printed two of their given names on the passport’s inside front coverâ€"and the rest of their names on the passport’s third page.

US visa

Acquiring a US visa was far easier, San Juan said. “The American Embassy employees simply asked the kids, who were very young at the time, to recite their names, and they did. Our papers were quickly processed.”

“My kids are used to that sideshow. When Ramuel was 6, he once confided in us that he was invited to the teachers’ lounge where he was asked to recite his name. He said they always laughed each time he succeeded,” he said.

The San Juan family stayed in Texas, where their children’s lengthy names did not matter, he said. The family returned to the Philippines in 2011.
#23363
Bewilderment, then anger

Twenty-one years and two more children later, San Juan still annoys government employees each time his children need to secure official documents.

He said their requests for birth certificates at the National Statistics Office (NSO) initially brought bewilderment to government clerksâ€"and eventually anger.

The family had to spend some time abroad with Raquel in 2005, but it took the NSO three years to release the birth certificates, which were prerequisites to securing passports and travel documents, San Juan said.

“My first child was born, but I was not happy when people in charge of her documents showed little imagination,” San Juan told the Inquirer by telephone from Urdaneta. “The form had a very short empty line where I was expected to fill out with my daughter’s name. I asked, ‘What if I decide to give my child a longer name?’ and got the reply, ‘You can’t do that.’”

“So I decided that I could do just that,” he said.

“My wife did have reservations as any level-headed, geometrically centered mathematics teacher would,” he said.

The mental training needed to help each of the siblings get their names in the right order and correctly spelled was provided by their mother, Raquel Agustin, who is teaching high school mathematics in the United States.

Father is to ‘blame’

The kilometric names, however, were all their father’s “fault.”

Their father, Rufino Ramil San Juan V, a former Urdaneta councilor and student activist and campus journalist at UP Baguio in the 1980s, decided that the bureaucracy needed to learn a thing or two about flexibility.

His older brother, 21-year-old Ramuel, is also enrolling at the University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio as a sophomore. He has drawn attention, too, because he has 20 first names.
Ramuel, a biology student, was named Ramuel Spirituel Mattathiah Obadiah Darius Desiderius Abner Macaire Nowell Asa Izzy Zoon Politikon Trigg Gruffydd Keen Kemp Knowles Bonifacio Makabayan A. San Juan.

Their oldest sister, Ramille Lewisse, 25, who operates a Web design consultancy firm in Metro Manila, is not to be outdone. She has shaped a career with a few people knowing she has 20 first names: Ramille Lewisse Marion To Kalon Zoe Vera Natalia Nadezna Zora Hosea Pro Patria Berenice Clotilda Currente Calamo Naomi Nahum Mehetabel A. San Juan.

The middle initial “A”â€"for Agustinâ€"represents their mother’s surname.

What a cunning rascal... :P

A female security guard of the LRT, Michelle Manansala, became aware of the couple’s situation when they boarded the train at the Baclaran Station and promptly assisted them.

“But just after leaving Carriedo [station], the woman’s water broke and the baby came out before [the train arrived] at Doroteo Jose [station],” Cabrera said.

Fortunately, a nurse who worked at the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., Ma. Cecilia Lopez, was a passenger on the same train and helped Idio deliver her baby.

LRT staffers who had been alerted to the situation met the couple and their newborn baby at the Doroteo Jose station and took them to Jose Fabella Hospital.

Cabrera said that mother and child were both in good condition. A TV report said the mother planned to call her baby “Carrie” because she was born at Carriedo station.

Just a few more minutes and she would have been born in an antiseptic, less crowded and noise-free environment.
A 35-year-old woman gave birth inside a coach of the Light Rail Transit’s (LRT) Line 1 Wednesday morning, just minutes before the northbound train pulled into the station where she was supposed to get off.

LRT spokesperson Hernando Cabrera said that Darlin Idio, a resident of Las Piñas City, gave birth to a baby girl at 6:25 a.m.

Idio and her male companion who was not identified were on their way to Jose Fabella Hospital in Sta. Cruz, Manila, where she was supposed to give birth.

A MONKEY AND TWO CATS

Once upon a time two cats found a piece of cheese and cut it into two pieces. But one piece was slightly bigger than the other. Both the cats wanted the bigger piece. Then they went
to a monkey and asked to sort out the matter.

The monkey said, "Don't worry. I'll make both the pieces equal. Then it took a bite from the bigger piece. But this made the other piece larger. So it took a bite from the other piece. This continued till the pieces became very small.

Seeing this, the cats pleaded, "Sir! We are satisfied. Let us have the pieces now."

The shrewd monkey replied, "This is my fee for sorting out the problem." Saying this, it gobbled up the remaining cheese. -- http://kidsfront.com/

A lawyer, the incoming congresswoman said she has not set her sights on any particular committee to joint, saying that she is still studying these legislative panels.

However, she vowed to pursue legislative measures that would grant incentives to law enforcers and other public servants who are able to excel in carrying out their duties.

Robredo said this has been the idea of her late husband, adding that the bill would help guarantee efficiency in the bureaucracy.

A House security detail revealed that Robredo has been offered to take over the office that will be vacated by Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada, who is on his last term as congressman of Quezon.  It is located at the new south annex building.

The new solon won over Nelly Favis-Villafuerte, wife of outgoing Rep. Luis Villafuerte.

Robredo credited her victory to the hundreds of campaign volunteers, mostly the youth.

Robredo said she conferred with Secretary General Marilyn Barua Yap to inquire about the hiring of her congressional staff and their qualifications.

“I couldn’t invite anyone without knowing what the requirements are, kaya iyon ang pinaka-purpose ng visit ko.  I want to start headhunting kasi if I want to work really hard, I have to choose the right people,” she explained.
