Males Anticipating Sex Produce Better and More Sperm - The Pavlov's conditioning applies to sex
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

We have known ever since the Pavlov experiments that a method of learning is conditioning: when we associate something with food, we start salivating and so on (remember the Pavlov's bell and dog?). But who had thought that conditioning also works for sex? At least for quail males, making them better breeders!

Male quails placed in environments they started associating with mating sired more offspring than their untrained counterparts and this could apply to many species, humans included.

The team led by psychologist Michael Domjan at the University of Texas, Austin, checked if conditioning increases the reproductive ability and if it does, the ability would be adaptive and spread among the population.

Male quails, which breed easily in captivity, were placed in boxes with green walls or tilted floors for 5 minutes and then put in cages with a female in order to reproduce. After 5 days of repeating this, one male was put in a green or tilted box for 5 minutes and another one in an unfamiliar box.

After that both were introduced to a single female within minutes of each other. The two males mating with the same female in succession each possessed a 50% chance of fertilizing the female's eggs. But the genetic tests revealed that conditioned males had a 72% chance of being the father.

The researchers believe the male quails anticipating sex were somehow psychologically tuned on and their sperm became more competitive or sperm concentrations or the amount of semen rose.

"We tend to think of sexual behavior as instinct-driven, yet our results show that learning plays as big a role in reproduction. The results provide an evolutionary explanation for why the behaviors Pavlov observed would have been selected for." said Domjan.

"Now that we know this, what I'm really interested in is whether conditioning provides the same advantages for females," said psychologist Karen Hollis of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

The Battery of the Future: Paper Made, in Whatever Shape You Want and Fueled by Sweat, Urine and Blood! - They act also as supercapacitors
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

1.Standard batteries produce electrons through a reaction between metal and electrolytes; 2.in the paper battery between carbon and electrolytes. 3.4. Electrons flow along a connected wire to the positive terminal.

A battery is in many cases that which impedes the size of many gadgets and implantable medical devices from dwindling. That's why the battery of the future is lightweight, ultra thin and completely flexible.

The battery of the future has just been designed by a team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The new model is completely integrated and can be printed like paper, rolled, twisted, folded, or cut into any desired shape without losing effectiveness or integrity. The new batteries can be even stacked to increase the total power output.

Over 90 % of the device is made up of cellulose (the material paper or cotton are made of), being thus ecological and the rest is made of carbon nanotubes
(giving the battery the black color).

Moreover, the device works as both a high-energy battery and a high-power supercapacitor, which are normally separate components in the electrical systems and is functional in a range of temperatures up to 300° F (150 °C) and down to -100° F (-73 °C). It can also make use of human blood, sweat or urine to increase power.

"It's essentially a regular piece of paper, but it's made in a very intelligent way," said co-author Robert Linhardt, the Ann and John H. Broadbent Senior Constellation Professor of Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering at Rensselaer.

The nanotubes function like electrodes, allowing for the electric conductivity. The device delivers the long, steady power output like a lithium-ion battery, but also bursts of high energy like a supercapacitor.

"We're not putting pieces together - it's a single, integrated device. The components are molecularly attached to each other: the carbon nanotube print is embedded in the paper, and the electrolyte is soaked into the paper. The end result is a device that looks, feels, and weighs the same as paper." said Linhardt.

A liquid salt acts as the battery's electrolyte. The ionic liquid has no water, thus there's nothing in the batteries to freeze or evaporate, explaining the devices' resistance to extreme temperatures. The battery could be used not only in small handheld electronics, but also in automobiles, aircraft and even boats. As it can be shaped on the desired forms, like a car door, it could enable crucial engineering innovations.

As cellulose is highly biocompatible, the device would be the choice for power supplies for implantable devices. The paper batteries would not further require adding any electrolytes, as it can use the naturally occurring electrolytes in human sweat, blood and urine.

The efficiency of the device could be further improved and different manufacturing techniques could be used, like a roll-to-roll system similar to the printing of the newspapers. There is also a cost obstacle: the carbon nanotubes, which for the moment block a mass production.

Anti-Perspirants Could Destroy the Boobs! - Aluminium salts, linked to breast cancer
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

A good smell and nice breasts make a woman attractive. But a new study shows there is something tricky in the combination: the aluminium in many anti-perspirants can provoke breast cancer. Women who have had breast cancer or those with family history should think twice before using antiperspirants
or deodorants.

Giving up deodorant could be as effective in fighting off cancer risk as a diet rich in cancer-preventing antioxidants. Ironically, women, who eat much more fruit and vegetables than men, cover their armpits daily with chemicals imitating estrogen, the female sex hormone promoting breast cancer.

Deodorants could be now added to risk factors for breast cancer, like dietary carcinogens, fat intake, level of exercise and pollutants.

A recent research made at Keele University discovered that aluminium salts, employed to block the sweat pores, can enter the breast tissue. The salts are found in higher levels in breast zones more prone to cancer, on the side and towards the armpit.

A 2005 research made at the University of Reading found that aluminium salts can act like estrogen in the body. The preservative parabens employed in anti-perspirants have also been encountered in breast cancers.

A U.S. research has discovered that the more often women employ anti-perspirants or deodorants (which do not stop the sweating) and shave their armpits, the earlier cancer installs.

There is no research done as to reveal a clear link between anti-perspirants or deodorants use and cancer development, but with 12 % of the women developing the condition, such a study would be an emergency.

No need to say that the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association in UK has rejected this correlation and the results of the last research.

The most worrying fact about deodorants is that they are used daily for years, so that you accumulate the potential carcinogen. One healthy measure would be their more irregular use, only when you really need them.

Alternating brands also changes continuously the mix of chemicals you receive. Another healthy habit would be the thorough washing in order to remove the chemicals at the end of the day.

What Do Men Look For in Women? - Physical attractiveness...
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

"I want her to be intelligent, cultivated, well mannered..." Who the heck believes all this crap, when the first things a man sees when he looks at a woman are boobs, legs and butt?

Even if we proudly call ourselves "Homo sapiens" ("Wise people"), we still behave like chimps when it comes to choosing a mate. At least this is the case with men.

A new research made at Indiana University by a team led by cognitive scientist Peter Todd found that even if men, to be politically correct claim otherwise, beauty is the
main factor while women, much choosier, take care of their looks for security and commitment.

"This formula has served humans throughout time, with the model of choosy females reflected in most mammals," the team wrote.

"Evolutionary theories in psychology suggest that men and women should trade off different traits in each other, and when we look at the actual mate choices people make, this is what we find evidence for. Ancestral individuals who made their mate choices in this way -- women trading off their attractiveness for higher quality men and men looking for any attractive women who will accept them -- would have had an evolutionary advantage in greater numbers of successful offspring." said Todd.

The research was based on a speed-dating session in Germany, involving 46 subjects. Speed dating means sessions in which men and women participate in 3-5 minutes "mini dates" with up to 30 different people. The participants would point after that in a box on a card which possible partners they would like to see again.

They are a "microcosm where mate choices are made sequentially in a faster and more formalized fashion than in daily life." the researchers noted.

The subjects had to complete before a questionnaire revealing their ideal mate according to factors like physical attractiveness, present and future financial status, health and parenting qualities.

"Not surprisingly, participants stated they wanted to find someone who was like themselves -- a socially acceptable answer. But once the sessions began, the men sought the more attractive women and the women were drawn to material wealth and security, setting their standards according to how attractive they viewed themselves. Furthermore, while men on average wanted to see every second woman again, the women wanted to meet only a third of the men again." said Todd.

"Speed dating ... only captures the initial stage of the extended process involved in long-term mate choice. But that initial expression of interest is crucial for launching everything else." Todd added.

Why Are Women's and Men's Brains Different? - A monkey clue...
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

This is clear, men and women are different species. And the difference is more than just physical: it goes in all inner organs, including the brain, explaining behavioral differences but also opposite desires, sensitivities, preferences...

The brain is masculinized from the womb by testosterone (its lack determines the feminization of the brain), generating anatomical differences that explain why the males find it harder to read facial expressions than women
do, but explain their higher ability to visualize objects in three dimensions or read maps, labyrinths and diagrams.

When it comes to women â€" the corpus callosum, the major white matter tract, connecting the two brain hemispheres, allowing their intercommunication â€" is much wider. That's why women have their brain functions more distributed, while men have a more "asymmetrical" brain, with more specialized areas and, for example, a lesion on the left hemisphere, which can induce speech loss, is more devastating for men.

A new research made by Associate Professor of Psychology and Biology Kimberley A. Phillips (Hiram College), Chet C. Sherwood (George Washington University) and Alayna L. Lilak (Hiram College) on capuchin monkeys revealed a similar sexual difference in the brain structure: a larger corpus callosum in females.

The 13 adult capuchins underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the brain for the scientists to assess the size of their corpus callosum and later were put to accomplish a task to find hand preference.

Capuchin monkeys

Just like humans, male capuchins had a relatively smaller corpus callosum than females, but right-handed individuals also had a relatively smaller corpus callosum than left-handed individuals.

This points to the fact that this gender brain difference could have an old history in humans.

Capuchin monkeys live in tropical Americas, from Mexico to northern Argentina and are amongst the most intelligent monkeys of the new world, known to use tools (stones) to crack mollusk shells.

They live both in trees and on the ground and hunt small rapid prey, like birds, lizards and squirrels, being inquisitive, very handy and presenting a complex social behavior and cognitive abilities. This is perhaps the most common monkey seen in Hollywood movies.

Don't miss the poem at the end.

Whatever your cross,

whatever your pain,

there will always be sunshine,

after the rain ....

Perhaps you may stumble,

perhaps even fall,

But God's always ready,

To answer your call ...

He knows every heartache,

sees every tear,

A word from His lips,

can calm every fear ...

Your sorrows may linger,

throughout the night,

But suddenly vanish,

in dawn's early light ...

The Savior is waiting,

somewhere above,

To give you His grace,

and send you His love...

Whatever your cross,

whatever your pain,

"God always sends rainbows .....

after the rain ... "

10 Reasons Why Sun Is Good for Our Health - Sun, a god of health
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Even the Stone Age people knew the Sun brought life on Earth and that is why they used to worship it. But the sun waves can heal and destroy, they can be the kiss of life or death. It depends on the way we use them.

1. The sunlight kills microbes. That's why it is important to put out in the sun carpets, blankets and eiderdowns that cannot be washed regularly. Exposure to the sun confers the skin a bright, healthy look and increased elasticity.

A moderately tanned skin is more resistant to infections and sun burning than an untanned one. Many skin diseases (dermatitis) can be
controlled and even cured through controlled exposure to the sun.

The sun rays are proven to strengthen the immune system.

2. Due to the sun our mood and morals improve. Sunlight helps in cases of chronic or acute depression, by stimulating the synthesis of endorphins (good-feeling hormones). That's why we get depressed in the cold and dark days of the winter.

3. The sun is good against insomnia. Daytime exposure to sunlight increases the melatonin production during the night. This hormone helps regulate the sleep.

4. Under the action of the sunlight, the skin synthesizes vitamin D, which makes possible calcium absorption in the intestine, helping the organism grow strong bones. This way the sun prevents rachitism in both children and adults and osteoporosis in elders.

5. As vitamin D and some related compounds impede the development of some cancer cells, we can say the sun fights off this disease. Regular and controlled exposure to the sun has a preventive effect against cancer of colon, breast, leukemia and lymphomas.

6. Exposure to the sun strengthens the cardiovascular system. Blood circulation is improved, the pulse, arterial pressure, moderately high glycemia and cholesterol levels can be normalized.

7. Sun rays improve liver functioning, being effective in treating jaundice.

8. They help the kidneys with a part of their job, as the sun waves favor the elimination of waste products through the skin, when we sweat.

9. The sun also helps losing weight by increasing the metabolic rate through the stimulation of the thyroid. It also eases symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

10. The sun rays also ease the healing of the swollen joints during peaks of inflammation in cases of arthritis.

Why Older Men Drool For Young Women - And women prefer older men...
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Which man in this world is not jealous of Hugh Hefner? It is a fact that men prefer younger women as mates, and women want by their side an older man. This male preference is universal across cultures.

Now, a scientific reason has been found: it boosts the
evolutionary success. In short, the number of children an individual produces along his lifespan. The new research was made by Martin Fieder and Susanne Huber, a married couple of anthropologists at the University of Vienna, Austria.

The team employed data from a massive demographic database of Swedish baby boomers born between 1945 and 1955, choosing 10,000 men and women who had married just once. The difference of age in those couples was correlated with their number of children.

The researchers claimed that if the couples made of older man-younger woman had more children, this would point to a genetic natural selection that turn women more attracted to older men and vice-versa. This evolutionary connection was evident when the researchers worked on the data: couples in which the husband was approximately 5 years older had 5% more descendants than same-age couples.

"That may not sound like much for a family unit, but it represents a "huge" effect on the evolutionary time scale," said Fieder.

It was also revealed that when men divorced and chose a new wife, this was in most cases younger and for divorced women, the new husband was older and a small detail must be mentioned here: the new husband tended to be just a few years older than the women, while the men marrying for the second time tended to choose wives of reproductive age, that's why the age difference in their case was much larger.

"The study shows that there is a "fitness basis" to people's choice of mate age. It also reveals a clash of interest between the two sexes, because women have a smaller window of reproductive opportunity. Once beyond that window, they are out of the game, whereas older men can continue to mate with ever-younger women," said Robin Dunbar, an anthropologist at the University of Liverpool, U.K.

No More Premature Ejaculation! - With dapoxetine
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Experiencing orgasm and ejaculating is beyond a man's control, especially after a long abstinence. But when the woman does not even understand it all the time, there is a problem. Premature ejaculation (PE) represents a "persistent or recurrent onset of ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation before, on, or shortly after penetration" and, of course, this is not the man's will.

PE is more than a sexual issue; it is a psychological condition, inducing
distress and dissatisfaction in both man and woman. Recent investigations suggested that PE could be linked to an impairment in serotonergic 5-hydroxytrptamine (5-HT) neurotransmission.

That's why new PE therapies target the 5-HT system. A recent trial made by Francisco Giuliano from Garches Frances investigated the efficacy of a new PE drug, dapoxetine. Dapoxetine hydrochloride is a short-lived selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) targeting specifically the PE condition.

Other most available SSRIs like fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine increase ejaculatory latency time, but their effect is felt in several hours, while dapoxetine's maximal effect occurs in just 1 hour.

50 % of the drug is eliminated after 1.2 hours and after 24 hours only 5% of it is still found in the cells, making it more effective and safer.

The two-placebo trial was made on over 2600 male subjects, and dapoxetine, 30 or 60 mg, was taken 1-3 hours before the sexual intercourse and the volunteers' average age was 40.

65 % of the subjects had lifelong PE and 35% had PE that emerged after a time of normal sexual function. Data of intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), determined by stopwatch during intercourse, was gathered.

The duration of the sexual intercourse appeared linked to the dapoxetine dose: 0.9 â€" 1.75 minutes for placebo, 0.92 â€" 2.78 minutes for 30 mg of dapoxetine and 0.91 â€" 3.32 minutes for 60 mg of dapoxetine. The drug worked on the first dose, but also subsequent ones and the effect persisted during the 12-week trial.

Dapoxetine's secondary effects were weak: just mild nausea (8.7 % for the 30 mg dose and 20.1 % for the 60 mg dose) and headache (5.9% for the 30 mg dose and 6.8% for the 60 mg dose). Discontinuation induced by adverse effects was of 4 % for 30 mg dose and 10 % for the 60 mg dose.
