A gunman killed 9 people at a college in Finland on Tuesday before shooting and wounding himself, according to reports of World Information Agencies.

The Finnish new agency STT has also confirmed 9 deaths, based on official police reports while a hospital official said the suspect had been "severely injured" by a gunshot wound to the head.

The shootings began just before 11 a.m. local time as about 150 students were going to class. The school is located in Kauhajoki, 180 miles northwest of Helsinki.

Witnesses give accounts of panic breaking on the school grounds as a hooded gunman entered the building and opened fire.

STT also reports the college building was on fire and that the gunman possibly had explosives on him.

Finnish media said video clips on YouTube showing a young man wearing a leather jacket and firing a gun appeared to be linked to the shooting. The posting was made five days before the shooting and the location was given as Kauhajoki. The user further posted three other clips of himself firing a handgun in the past three weeks.

According to media reports, clips from the 1999 Columbine school shootings in Colorado were listed among the user's favorite videos.

Police could not immediately confirm whether the postings were linked to Tuesday's shooting.

The shootings happened almost a year after a gunman killed eight people and himself at a school in southern Finland.

Here's an image you don't see very often: the world's smallest man standing directly underneath the woman with the longest legs ever.

Svetlana Pankrtova's legs rise a whopping 51.96in while He Ping Ping measures at just 29.37in tall.

They met today in London's Trafalgar Square to celebrate the launch of this year's Guinness Book Of Records.

She may not be the world's tallest woman, that record is held by Yao Defen, who stands 7ft 9in.

But she certain has pins to die for and was not afraid to show them off in a daring ocean blue mini dress.

Science and Research / China May Be Shaken Again Soon
September 17, 2008, 04:30:02 AM

On May 12 this year, the 7.9 magnitude Wenchuan earthquake devastated the region along the Longmenshan area close to Chengdu, a city with 11 million inhabitants in the southern center of China. Based on their research, experts in the field claim that it is pretty likely that another major replica is bound to strike again soon.

An earthquake is defined as a rapid, sudden shaking of the Earth's surface, caused by the breaking and shifting of the rock beneath it. Although such events are fairly common in Asia, this one was unusual in that it happened within the continent, along a fault which had been dormant for thousands of years, close to two other much more seismically active regions. Seventy thousand of the victims of the earthquake were instantly killed, while eighteen thousand more have gone missing or are presumed to be dead.

The research group was led by Shinji Toda from the Geological Survey of Japan, together with Jian Lin from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Mustapha Meghraoui from the Institute of Geophysics in Strasbourg (France), and Ross Stein of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The geophysicist team analyzed the region's seismic activity in the past 10 years, and also used computer models in order to estimate the stress changes along the strip-like faults of Xianshuihe, Kunlun, and Min Jiang. These faults are located 150 to 450 km (90 to 280 miles) from the Longmen Shan rupture that caused the recent catastrophic quake.

Their study concluded that the respective event doubled the occurrence chances of similar quakes on the two fault lines. More precisely, the probability of another earthquake of a 6 or higher magnitude occurring in the area was estimated at 57 to 71% for the next 10 years, dropping to only 8 to 12% for the case of a magnitude 7 one in the same period of time. This rises again, though, to about 21-31% for the next 3 decades.

As Stein says, “One great earthquake seems to make the next one more likely, not less. We tend to think of earthquakes as relieving stress on a fault. That may be true for the one that ruptured, but not for the adjacent faults.” There have been many cases of high-scaled quakes that were soon followed by major similar events. Researchers attribute this to the domino effect, as the movement of one part of the planet's crusts affects the others nearby. Although some crust stress is released from certain regions, it is transferred to the nearby faults.

Toda also detailed the biggest problem for geophysicists trying to predict earthquakes, “Earthquake prediction is a bit like the thundercloud and lightning. We can forecast that lightning will come from a thundercloud, but we cannot predict the exact time and place where the lightning will hit. With earthquakes, we can roughly forecast the probability of activity over broad ranges of time, magnitude, and location, but we cannot determine the exact value for any of these.”

But how do you expect me
to live alone with just me
'Cause my world revolves around you
It's so hard for me to breathe

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
It's how I feel whenever you ain't there
It's no air, no air
Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon' be without me
If you ain't here, I just can't breathe
It's no air, no air

Science and Research / Monster Crickets
September 09, 2008, 06:40:25 PM

Female giant weta crickets are huge. At about 0.7 ounces (20 grams), they're one of the world's heaviest insects. But the males are about half their size. Now scientists know why.

In a surpising way, size really matters in this species.

Males that are lighter and have longer legs are more successful at mating. The reason: They can travel farther to find a female.

The most successful males can walk the length of a football field in one night in their native New Zealand, the researchers found by attaching radio-tracking devices to the bugs. That would amount to more than 4 miles (7,000 meters) for a human, given the proportional differences.

Small, long-legged males walked farther, acquired more mates, and transferred more spermatophores to females during the multiple daytime copulations common among these insects.

"Our findings are a rare example of sexual selection favoring a suite of traits that promote greater mobility in one sex only," said biologist Clint Kelly of the University of Toronto. "This is exciting because it suggests that sexual selection for smaller, more mobile males could be responsible for some of the impressive sexual difference in body size in this species."

The finding might also help to explain why males are smaller than females in some other animals, too, the researchers conclude.

Men tend to wind up with life partners who look like their mother, while a woman is lured to a partner who looks like her father, scientists reported on Wednesday.

Heterosexuals are deeply attracted to individuals whose faces are similar to that of their opposite-sex parent, they said, suggesting that this characteristic is rooted in an evolutionary drive.

A team led by Tamas Bereczkei at the University of Pecs in Hungary created a model of facial ratios -- width of jaw, distance between mouth and brow and so on -- comprising 14 facial zones.

They measured 312 Hungarian adults from 52 different families using this method. Each family included a couple, along with two sets of parents.

The researchers found a significant correlation in facial similarities between a woman's mate and her father, and also between a man's partner and his mother.

The team tested the model on faces that were randomly selected from the general population and repeated the experiment with a panel of judges, who also picked out the same pairings from randomly selected groups of photos.

Interestingly, men and women focused on different parts of the face when they home in on a potential mate, they found.

A man's lover and his mother tended to have similar fullness in the lips, width of mouth, as well as length and width of jaw.

But for women, the critical features were the distance between mouth and brow, the height of the face, distance between the eyes and the size of a man's nose.

The choices are driven less by psychology and socialization and more by evolutionary pressures, suggests Bereczkei.

Too much genetic overlap -- as can happen with incest -- is an evolutionary no-no.

But seeking similar genetic traits "may confer individuals with additional adaptive advantages," he wrote.

It could increase the degree to which parents share genes with offspring, enhancing the genetic representation of future generations.

Finding similar partners might also help perpetuate genetic complexes that have evolved to adapt to a particular environment.

There may be an additional bonus, which probably has more to do with happiness than a genetic imperative.

"Human couples who are similar in physical and psychological characteristics are more likely to remain together than dissimilar partners, possibly leading to an increase in fertility," the study concludes.

The tireless tongue already controls taste and speech, helps kiss and swallow and fights germs. Now scientists hope to add one more ability to the mouthy muscle, and turn it into a computer control pad.

Georgia Tech researchers believe a magnetic, tongue-powered system could transform a disabled person's mouth into a virtual computer, teeth into a keyboard -- and tongue into the key that manipulates it all.

"You could have full control over your environment by just being able to move your tongue," said Maysam Ghovanloo, a Georgia Tech assistant professor who leads the team's research.

The group's Tongue Drive System turns the tongue into a joystick of sorts, allowing the disabled to manipulate wheelchairs, manage home appliances and control computers. The work still has a ways to go -- one potential user called the design "grotesque" -- but early tests are encouraging.

The system is far from the first that seeks a new way to control electronics through facial movements. But disabled advocates have particularly high hopes that the tongue could prove the most effective.

"This could give you an almost infinite number of switches and options for communication," said Mike Jones, a vice president of research and technology at the Shepherd Center, an Atlanta rehabilitation hospital. "It's easy, and somebody could learn an entirely different language."

That's quite a contrast to the handful of methods already available to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who are disabled from the neck down.

The "sip and puff" technique, which lets people issue commands by inhaling and exhaling into a tube, is among the most popular. But it offers users only four different commands, limiting their options.

Control systems that use sophisticated pads to measure neck and head movements are also widespread, but using the hardware can be tiring, and frustrating on smaller electronics like computers.

And while newer innovations that track eye movement are promising, they can be costly, slow and susceptible to mixed signals.

KEEP WALKING!

The Organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your foot. If you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains.

Typically, they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it connects to.

It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate here.

This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies and related materials.

God created our body so well that he thought of even this. He made us walk so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping these organs activated at all times.
So, keep walking...

TRY THIS!

Weird and Extreme / Upside-Down House
September 06, 2008, 12:21:03 AM

Germany - A businessman who put up a house in Germany upside down, with its gabled roof poking into the soil, said on Wednesday it was intended to be "an experiment for the senses".

Polish-born Klaudiusz Golos said he would admit visitors to the extraordinary building from Thursday.

It has been erected among other, more normal-looking private homes at Trassenheide in Germany's north-east corner, just a few kilometres from the Polish border on the holiday island of      Usedom.

Visitors enter the 120-square-metre home through the attic and ascend to the "ground" floor. All the furnishings including chairs, the fitted kitchen and the toilets are also upside down, but the stairs are right-side up because visitors have to use them.

Tourists on the island have been coming to see the house from outside for months during the building work. To cope with the extraordinary weight of the building pressing on one point, the house was built with a steel frame.

It's a question women the world over have long pondered: Why are some men unable to commit?

Now science may finally have the answer  -  it's in their genes.

Researchers have found that men with a common genetic 'flaw' are less likely to marry even if they have children with a long-term partner.

Those who have tied the knot are twice as likely to be in a rocky marriage and to have discussed the possibility of divorce.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, partners of men with the 'love rat gene' were also found to be unhappy with their lot in life.

Scientists claim the gene  -  which is linked to the bonding chemical vasopressin  -  could explain the Casanova tendencies of men such as Rod Stewart, who has been married three times and fathered seven children by five different women, and Richard Burton, who racked up five marriages to four women  -  twice to Elizabeth Taylor.

Swedish researchers examined the DNA of 500 sets of twins, all of whom were in long-term relationships and had children.

Some were living with their partner, while others were married. The men and women were asked a series of questions about their relationship, and the answers were then compared to their genetic make-up.

The scientists found the 'love rat' effect applied only to men with two copies of the rogue '334' form of the AVPR1A gene. These men said they found it harder to bond with their wife or girlfriend.

They were also less likely to be married, despite being in a long-term relationship and having at least one child.

It is thought the gene, which was carried by 40 per cent of the men, may affect the way the brain uses vasopressin.

Writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers, from Stockholm's Karolinska Institute, said: 'This may tentatively reflect a lower degree of commitment.'

They plan to carry out a similar study to see if the 'cuddle hormone' oxytocin also affects women's ability to commit.

Animal studies have shown that vasopressin affects moles' ability to remain monogamous.

The chemical, which is made by the pituitary gland, has also been linked to autism in previous studies.

However, women worried that their man has the 'love rat gene' need not necessarily start thinking of ways to get out of the relationship.

Researcher Hasse Walum said: 'This gene is only a small part of the process  -  there are many different ingredients to a happy marriage.'

The roar of approval

A woman's head may be turned by a flash car, but it is the sound that really drives them wild, research has found.

Even those who claimed to have no interest in motoring saw their levels of testosterone - which is an indicator of sex drive - soar after listening to the engines of four different models.

A Maserati was the most popular model, affecting all of the 20 women taking part, compared to just 50 per cent of men.

However, the women saw a decrease in their hormone levels after listening to a Volkswagen Polo.

For men, a Lamborghini was the favourite, with a Ferrari coming in second.

Steve Langan, of insurers Hiscox, who conducted the study, said: 'Luxury cars do quite literally turn heads.'

Sony is recalling 440,000 laptop computers after a number of customers were left with minor burns.

The electrics company found a wiring flaw near the hinge connecting the body of the laptop and its display could wear quickly, causing a short circuit and overheating.

A flaw in a circuit board inside the display could also cause the rim to overheat.

The Tokyo-based company has received 209 reports of overheating worldwide, including seven cases in which people received minor burns, a Sony spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity.

Five people suffered minor burns in Japan and one each in the U.S. and Italy, she said.

Sony Corp is recalling 19 models in the Vaio TZ series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008.

Around 373,000 of the laptops were sold in 48 countries, including the United States, and the remaining 67,000 in Japan.

There have been no reported problems in Britain. However, a spokesman said: 'Sony is voluntarily initiating a programme to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a rework of affected models.

'Sony takes the quality of the products it sells very serious and makes every effort to ensure that the products it develops meet all relevant regulations and standards. We sincerely apologist in advance for any inconvenience caused.'

The laptop problem comes two years after several computer makers were forced to recall a total of more than 10 million laptop batteries made by Sony because of possible overheating. The recall cost Sony about £243m.

Sony reported in July that its April-June profit plunged by about half from a year earlier, in part because of slowing electronics sales growth.
