2,000 volunteers are expected to use Azuga's connected car technology during Part 2 of a study for road usage charging feasibility in Hawaii

For Part 2 of the HiRUC demonstration, up to 2,000 participants are expected to sign up for the latter 9-month portion of the 18-month study, which is designed to research the viability of road usage charging as an alternative infrastructure funding system for the state. Part 2 of the HiRUC demonstration project is expected to launch Spring 2020 and will include research from participants using Azuga's in-vehicle plug-and-play technology when driving on public roads throughout the counties of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai.
The need for alternative funding arises from the decreasing transportation funds, which have been predominantly provided by revenue from a per-gallon gas tax. As more and more vehicles on the road are fuel-efficient and fuel-independent, the state funds used to build, maintain, and improve public roads have flattened and will decline. Many state governments are seeking revenue alternatives as a means to protect their infrastructure investment, and some are investigating road usage charging (RUC) as a promising solution. RUC pilots have been completed across the United States and are currently active on the East Coast and in Oregon. Recently, the legislators of the State of Utah signed RUC into mandate as a long-term funding system solution.
In Hawaii, each county has its own gas tax in addition to the state gas tax. Furthermore, the state is sustainability minded. "Hawaii and its counties have a commitment to a clean energy future, including transforming Hawaii's ground transportation to 100-percent renewable fuel sources by 2045," said Ging Ging Fernandez, the HiRUC Project Manager with D'Artagnan Consulting, a specialized firm hired by the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) to manage the project. "HiRUC is an opportunity to advance the state-of-the-practice of road usage charging policy and technology possibilities."
Part 2 of the HiRUC demonstration will evaluate methods of mileage collection and, unique to other RUC programs, it will utilize Azuga's advanced public versus private road differentiation for accurate assessment of only public road use. Charges will be simulated for the project, and no real money will be collected. Azuga will provide three mileage reporting methods (MRMs) including location-enabled and non-location enabled OBDII devices, which can be plugged into most vehicles' diagnostics port under the dashboard. Participants utilizing these devices may also opt in to Azuga's convenient, premium services such as diagnostic trouble code alerts, battery voltage alerts, and driver scores. The third MRM is Vehcon's OdoPhoto, a non-location image capture solution embedded within Azuga's smartphone app that allows participants to periodically snap a photo of their odometer and remotely submit it for mileage processing.

Sign up to bungee jump off the bridge at the midpoint of the hike or watch your friends as they plunge 120 feet down towards the riverbed and soar back up to the bridge. Enjoy birdwatching and plant life as you explore.

In continuing efforts to establish standardized groundwork for the automated vehicle technology, SAE International has released SAE J3018 Information Report: Guidelines for Safe On-Road Testing of SAE Level 3, 4 and 5 Prototype Automated Driving Systems (ADS).
"SAE International leads standardizing activities for the rapidly advancing automation technology. These activities not only require development of new standards but also timely revisions of the existing ones," said Jack Pokrzywa, Director of Global Ground Vehicle Standards at SAE International. "The updated J3018 standard will better reflect the needs for safe on-road performance testing of the technology today and into the future." 
The J3018 document provides general safety-relevant guidance for testing prototypes— conditional, high and full (SAE Levels 3 to 5) ADS-equipped—on test vehicles operated in mixed-traffic environments on public roads. J3018 specifically addresses testing of ADS-operated vehicles as overseen by in-vehicle fallback test drivers (IFTD) and does not include guidance for evaluating the performance of post-production ADS-equipped vehicles.
In addition, SAE International is closely aligned with the very important work being conducted by the recently formed Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC). Based on the publishing of the AVSC's best practices, J3018 will continue to evolve with published updates.
Originally published in 2015, the updated J3018 standard incorporates lessons-learned based on accumulated field experience in testing prototype ADS-operated vehicles on public roads and is now compatible with related SAE International documents.

On September 1st, 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall with storm surges topping 20 feet and 220-mile-an-hour-wind-gusts that experts are now saying is the strongest hurricane on modern record to hit the Bahamas. With dramatically rising customer demand, NowRx recently expanded from its flagship base in Mountain View to San Jose, with other California cities scheduled in the months to come, including Orange County in October. The new funding round will further accelerate NowRx's expansion across California in 2019 and nationally in 2020.

Weak Organic Acids (WOA) are a common component of no clean liquid flux. These acids provide the cleaning and etching capabilities required to prepare surfaces to accept solder. They are also a source of chemical contamination that can cause electrical and corrosive failures on circuit assemblies. The ability to assess the risk of flux residue after soldering in the production environment is a challenge for assemblers and flux manufacturers alike. In this study the accuracy of common residue extraction methods and a comparison of electrical and soldering performance of common WOAs are performed to illustrate the challenges associated with flux residue assessment as it relates to reliability.

The winner was announced at the WIT Accelerate! Conference & Expo in Dallas, Texas, during the panel discussion "How Remarkable Women Unleash Their Leadership Potential." The panel was facilitated by Angela Eliacostas, president and founder of AGT Global Logistics and 2018 WIT Influential Woman in Trucking. The award was presented by Kary Schaefer, general manager, product marketing and strategy, Daimler Trucks North America.
"This is the second year I've had the pleasure of presenting the Influential Women in Trucking award, and I have to say the caliber and contributions of all the nominees have left me in awe," said Schaefer. "I am honored to present this award to Ruth Lopez, director of transportation management at Ryder System, Inc. whose leadership and influence in the transportation industry exemplifies everything that Women In Trucking is trying to accomplish."    
The Influential Woman in Trucking award recognizes women in the trucking industry who make or influence key decisions, have a proven record of responsibility, and mentor and serve as a role model to other women. The award was developed in 2010 as a way to honor female leaders in trucking and to attract and advance women within the industry.

Lopez's career with Ryder System, Inc. spans 20 years. She currently serves as director of transportation management, leading teams in the U.S. and in Mexico. The teams are comprised of transportation planners executing lowest-cost/time-compliant shipments in accordance with the expectations of 56 external clients. Lopez, along with her team, creates specific execution plans with comprehensive strategies for Ryder's key customer segments and new client implementations.
Lopez has served as a co-chair for Ryder's Women's Leadership Forum, whose mission is to support the attraction, retention and development of women. She also was named a Supply Chain Excellence Award recipient for work recognized within the Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) division, which has over 8,000 employees. Lopez also received a Ryder Outstanding Award Recognition (ROAR) award. It is given each quarter to an employee or team who consistently goes above and beyond in their duties and truly exemplifies the Ryder guiding principles. "The greatest recognition is when people say I have changed their lives," she said.
The message Lopez gives to women in this industry is simple: "Passionately invest in others. Set aside time to do this and make it a priority. Spend the time to nurture them, teach them, and support them. This, in turn, will allow you to reflect on investing in yourself. Stay true to yourself and always do the right thing."
