Families speak of devastation as details of Boston bombing victims emerge

Martin Richard, eight, Krystle Campbell, 29, and an unnamed Boston University graduate student confirmed to have died

One was an eight-year-old boy enjoying a Patriots' Day holiday outing with his family. Another was a young woman who had watched the Boston Marathon every year since she was child. And the third was a graduate student at Boston University attending the event with friends.

On Tuesday, as the massive federal investigation into the twin bomb blasts continued, details of the three people who died began to emerge. Two of the victims were named: Martin Richard, eight, and Krystle Campbell, 29. The third victim has yet to be identified, but in a statement Boston University said one of its graduate students had been killed.

Juli continued:

My parents had many wonderful stories of their time in England and the wonderful, generous people they met there, but none so poignant as the one resulting from that selfless gesture by a man they never actually met. I can’t remember hearing the story for the first time, but I remember hearing it often. Each time he told the story, my father ended up with a tear in his eye. He was a wonderful father, husband and friend. He dedicated his life to ‘giving back’. I hope someone might recall the gentleman whose noble action so inspired my father.

Unfortunately, Karel doesn't know what the good Samaritan looked like or even if he's still alive. But if he's still out there, Karel would love the opportunity to say thanks. She told The Province, "For many years, we would wonder, ‘Why would someone do that?’ We would go through various scenarios ... and there really isn’t an answer. ... We’d certainly like to thank them but also just to say how a small gesture can change a person’s life."

Karel spoke to The Province about her quest to find the stranger. She says the act had an enormous impact on the couple and their future children. "It really was the start of how we thought and think in this family,” Karel said.

Upon moving to British Columbia, Tom took an active role in the community, volunteering for a variety of organizations. His wife and daughter believe the stranger who picked up the tab was at least partially responsible.

Daughter Juli, 44, spoke to the Birmingham Mail about her late father. “I can’t help but believe that the random act of kindness of an English gentleman impacted on the life of a 22-year-old Canadian student in such a way that it contributed to his development as the dedicated, generous man he became.”

Woman seeks stranger who paid for wedding 54 years ago

Nearly 55 years ago, Karel and Tom Nordstrom got married. They were twenty-something students with little money. Wanting to celebrate, the Canadian nationals held a small reception at the Royal Sutton Coldfield Hotel in Birmingham, England.

A few friends attended, enjoying drinks and food. After the reception, the newlyweds went to see about paying, but were told that the costs had already been taken care of thanks to an anonymous stranger who had already left, according to The Province.

Tom died last year at the age of 76. Karel is seeking the help of the Web to track down this mysterious benefactor who, through a simple act of kindness, helped get the couple off on the right foot and inspired her husband.

The most crucial clues, though, will come from closed-circuit camera footage from the area that could show the bomber planting the devices or fleeing the scene, he said.

He noted that in the 2005 London subway bombings, police used the cameras to quickly zero in on the suspects.

“My suspicion is this is something that they will be able to make significant progress on in a very short period of time,” Kohlmann said.

“The record of people who have gotten away with things like this is not very good.”

William Bratton, the former police commissioner of Boston, Los Angeles and New York, said it's important investigators approach the case with an open mind.

"You start with the assumption that you know nothing," he said.

They also need to be on the alert for false claims of responsibility that "will come out of the woodwork," Bratton said.

Kohlmann said forensics from the scene could give investigators important information. If the explosive used was military-grade, that would suggest foreign terrorists, and not someone closer to home jury copying bomb-recipes off the Internet, is responsible.
#22922
But Kohlmann said an organized group â€" domestic or international â€" could also be the culprit.

“It could be half a dozen different causes, or just a crazy guy,” he said.

NBC News National Security analyst Mike Leiter agreed that even though it was a “pretty sophisticated attack,” the field of suspects is wide open.

“I wouldn’t go down any particular path,” Leiter said on MSNBC.

Big question: lone-wolf bomber, or organized terrorism?

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The first task for investigators in the bombing that rocked Boston on Monday will be determining whether the carnage was the work of an individual or a terrorist organization, experts said.

The scope of the attack at the high-security Boston Marathon doesn’t rule out a lone wolf, said Evan Kohlmann, NBC News’ terrorism analyst.

“There have been individuals who have been capable of doing something like this,” Kohlmann said, pointing to the 1996 Olympics bombing by anti-abortion radical Eric Rudolph.

The Guardian provided a description of the killing and eating of pangolins: "A Guangdong chef interviewed last year in the Beijing Science and Technology Daily described how to prepare a pangolin: 'We keep them alive in cages until the customer makes an order. Then we hammer them unconscious, cut their throats and drain the blood. It is a slow death. We then boil them to remove the scales. We cut the meat into small pieces and use it to make a number of dishes, including braised meat and soup. Usually the customers take the blood home with them afterwards.'"

Though pangolin are protected by an international ban on their trade, populations have suffered from illegal trafficking due to beliefs in Asia that their ground-up scales can stimulate lactation or cure cancer or asthma. In the past decade there have been numerous seizures of illegally trafficked pangolin and pangolin meat in Asia. In one such incident in 2013, 10,000 kilograms of pangolin meat was seized from a Chinese vessel that ran aground in the Philippines.

Threats

Pangolins are hunted and eaten in many parts of Africa, and are one of the more popular types of bush meat. They are also in great demand in China because their meat is considered a delicacy and some Chinese believe pangolin scales have medicinal qualities. This, coupled with deforestation, has led to a large decrease in the numbers of giant pangolins. In November 2010, pangolins were added to the Zoological Society of London's list of genetically distinct and endangered mammals.

Reproduction

Gestation is 120â€"150 days. African pangolin females usually give birth to a single offspring at a time, but the Asiatic species can give birth from one to three. Weight at birth is 80â€"450 g (3â€"18 ounces), and the scales are initially soft. The young cling to the mother's tail as she moves about, although in burrowing species, they remain in the burrow for the first two to four weeks of life. Weaning takes place at around three months of age, and pangolins become sexually mature at two years.

Diet

Pangolins lack teeth and the ability to chew. Instead, they tear open anthills or termite mounds with their powerful front claws and probe deep into them with their very long tongues. Pangolins have glands in their chests to lubricate the tongue with sticky, ant-catching saliva.

Some species, such as the tree pangolin, use their strong, prehensile tails to hang from tree branches and strip away bark from the trunk, exposing insect nests inside.

A pangolin has large keratin scales covering its skin, the only mammal with this adaptation. It is found naturally in tropical regions throughout Africa and Asia. The name, pangolin, comes from the Malay word, pengguling, meaning "something that rolls up".

Tubbataha is a 97,000-hectare (239,700-acre) marine sanctuary and popular diving destination 640 kilometers (400 miles) southwest of Manila. The massive reef already had been damaged by a U.S. Navy ship that got stuck in January and had to be dismantled.

The fishermen face up to 12 years' imprisonment and fines of up to $300,000 for the poaching charge alone. For possession of the pangolin meat, they can be imprisoned up to six years and fined, Villena said.

Alex Marcaida, an officer of the government's Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, Philippine authorities consider the Philippine pangolin threatened because of unabated illicit trade. He said the Chinese crewmen have said the pangolins came from Indonesia, but officials were still verifying the claim.

WWF-Philippines said the global illegal wildlife trade is estimated to yield at least $19 billion per year, comprising the fourth-largest illegal global trade after narcotics, product and currency counterfeiting and human trafficking. It said the risks are low compared with other crimes, and that high-level traders are rarely arrested, prosecuted or convicted.

The Philippine military quoted the fishermen as saying they accidentally wandered into Philippine waters from Malaysia. They were being detained in southwestern Puerto Princesa city, where Chinese consular officials visited them.
#22946

It is not yet clear which of the four Asian pangolin species the meat comes from. The International Union of Conservation of Nature lists two species as endangered: the Sunda, or Malayan, pangolin, and the Chinese pangolin. Two others, including the Philippine pangolin endemic to Palawan, are classified as near threatened.

The animals are protected in many Asian nations, and an international ban on their trade has been in effect since 2002, but illicit trade continues. The meat and scales of the pangolin fetch hundreds of dollars per kilogram in China, where many believe they cure various ailments.

The IUCN says rising demand for pangolins and lax laws are wiping out the toothless anteaters from their forest habitat in Southeast Asia.
#22947

The World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) said the Chinese vessel F/N Min Long Yu could have been carrying up to 2,000 of the toothless, insect-eating animals rolled up in the boxes, with their scales already removed.

"It is bad enough that the Chinese have illegally entered our seas, navigated without boat papers and crashed recklessly into a national marine park and World Heritage Site," said WWF-Philippines chief executive officer Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan. "It is simply deplorable that they appear to be posing as fishermen to trade in illegal wildlife."

The boat's 12 Chinese crewmen are being detained on charges of poaching and attempted bribery, said Adelina Villena, the marine park's lawyer. She said more charges are being prepared against them, including damaging the corals and violating the country's wildlife law for being found in possession of the pangolin meat.

Boat filled with protected species hits coral reef

By TERESA CEROJANO | Associated Press
15 April 2013

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" A Chinese vessel that ran into a protected coral reef in the southwestern Philippines held evidence of even more environmental destruction inside: more than 10,000 kilograms (22,000 pounds) of meat from a protected species, the pangolin or scaly anteater.

The steel-hulled vessel hit an atoll on April 8 at the Tubbataha National Marine Park, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site on Palawan island. Coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Armand Balilo said Monday that some 400 boxes, each containing 25 to 30 kilograms of frozen pangolins, were discovered during a second inspection of the boat Saturday.

“I hope they understand. Never mind if some of them get mad at me, just as long as the majority (believe it’s a good law),” he said.

He said the law could never be considered “antipoor” since its only intent was to protect the residents in resettlement areas from diseases and the pets from possible cruelty.

Local authorities had already given the residents ample time to have their pets transferred to other places, he said.

Carlos also denied that animals at the shelter were being neglected. “There are two caretakers there. Food is cooked for the animals. Anybody can check this.”

Another Malanday resident who identified himself only as Ruben said he had also been hiding four dogs and a cat inside his house. “I’d rather die first before they take my pets away from me,” he said. His pets are his source of “good luck,” added Ruben, a tricycle operator.

He maintained that he had never been remiss in his responsibilities as a pet owner. He always bought them pet food and had the dogs vaccinated with antirabies shots. “So tell me: Am I irresponsible?” he asked.

Dr. Manuel Carlos, head of the City Veterinary Office in charge of implementing the ordinance, acknowledged that complaints had been raised against the ban.

Jenny said she had since visited Cha-cha in the shelter about 10 times. The once playful dog, she said, had become thinner, sad and passive in its cage.

She repeatedly tried to reclaim Cha-cha but the people manning the shelter always cited the ordinance.

“It’s so unfair. Do they know how we take care of Cha-cha? Just because we live in a depressed area doesn’t mean we are irresponsible,” she explained.

“I’ve seen it with my own eyes: The animals (kept in the pound) are dying,” she said as she gazed at her two dogs then lying quietly on the floor.

Jenny had a third dog, Cha-cha, which was seized by City Hall workers and placed in the animal shelter in Barangay Concepcion on March 22. Cha-cha got caught after slipping through the gate which had been left open by her house guests that day.

“I heard people shouting, ‘Ay, Cha-cha! Cha-cha!’ and I saw four men catch her with a noose at the end of a rod. The dog was crying,” said “Julia,” Jenny’s sister.

Local government officials maintain that the ban, enforced under Ordinance No. 156, only makes sure that animals will not end up in areas, like relocation sites, where their needs may not be fully met. The city veterinarian, for example, said it was also intended to protect residents from diseases and the animals from maltreatment.

But animal welfare advocates have assailed the 1996 measure for being discriminatory against the poor who, they said, can be responsible pet owners.

Jenny said “men in white” from City Hall had been “aggressive” in rounding up pets in the barangay, prompting residents like her to hide their pets.

She had to do it for the sake of her dear Che-Che and Champ.

una, wa tay labot sa dalan sa ubang siyudad.  saying that roads in other cities are worse than tagbilaran's would not make tagbilaran's roads any better.

Financial assistance

He said Joavan asked him for the shop owner’s contact number but he didn’t know it since he was only hired recently.

“Iya lang kong kalit gipusil bisan wala nako siya unsaa (He shot me even though I didn’t do anything to him),” Largo said.

He said he saw a hand grenade in Joavan’s pocket, prompting to run despite being wounded.

“Basin ilabay pa lang niya nako (I was afraid he would lob it to me),” Largo said.

He admitted that his family has suffered because he can’t go back to work with his injuries. (Largo has three children with wife Nira.)

However, he said his boss promised to shoulder his medical expenses and give his family financial assistance.

Last week, Joavan was also accused of intimidating a woman who refused to allow him to post a campaign poster of his father outside her house.

Witness

He also called on his detractors not to judge his son to prejudge his son “without the due process of law.”

Fernandez said the logbook where Joavan was staying at the time of the shooting will show that Joavan was there and not at the crime scene.

He said a barber will also testify and is willing to execute an affidavit that he was cutting Joavan’s hair at the time of the incident.

“If this is true, so how can he be at the same places at the same time? No matter how many cases Joavan faced in the past, that cannot be a reason to prejudge him. Let’s get to the truth”, the mayor said.

Largo was shot around 12:30 a.m. last Friday.

Fernandez said he had nothing to do with Joavan’s statement accusing Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district), who is running for Talisay City mayor, of framing him.

Fernandez said maybe his son made the statement because he was prejudged by the person who said he would order the police to arrest him.

Largo, in a separate interview, said he didn’t expect Joavan to shoot him.

Both men reportedly belong to the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity, but Largo said Joavan might not know him because he (Largo) is an ordinary member.

Manhunt continues

The police official said they will continue to look for Joavan with the help of the Provincial Intelligence Branch of the Cebu Provincial Police Office and Regional Intelligence Division of the Police Regional Office 7.

Lim said they will charge Joavan with frustrated murder tomorrow.

He said Joavan will be safe in police custody.

Joavan, in an earlier report, said he no longer trusted Lim, whom he accused of being used by a politician.

Meanwhile, the mayor said Joavan’s latest caper won’t affect his candidacy because the constituents love him.

He said he has championed the poor and the underprivileged during his nine years as mayor, receiving awards from the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Manila in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Soc ‘denies’ he will turn in Joavan

By Davinci S. Maru and Elias O. Baquero
Sunday, April 14, 2013

JOAVAN Fernandez will surrender to authorities tomorrow.

Talisay City Police Station Chief Elmer Lim said Joavan’s father Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez assured him of this yesterday.

Lim said the mayor feared for the life of his son who is the subject of a manhunt after he allegedly shot 36-year-old Eduardo Largo Jr., a car shop watchman in Barangay San Isidro, at dawn last Friday.

Lim said he expects Fernandez to keep his promise.

Fernandez, though, reportedly told Vice Mayor Alan Bucao, his partymate in Alayon, that he won’t give up Joavan since there is no case filed yet against his son.

Quote from: hubag bohol on April 14, 2013, 07:04:28 PMI don’t think the mayor, a Catholic faith defender, really has the temperament to have Joavan arrested and force him into rehab. He is too meek for this job. I have heard stories of how the son has been “abusing” the father, which means that both fear as well as parental love have prevented Soc from exerting his will as a father.

while his being a catholic defender is appreciated, it looks like fire and brimstone could not stay the evil that lurks nearby.  it seems to me like he's in denial.  a catholic defender with a wayward son?  why should he believe it?  his son can do no evil because he's a catholic defender.  oh-oh. :(

'Since Julian was three days old he has walked our dog with me every day. I believe the bond between them is strong because they take care of each other. Julian opens the door for Max to come in and out of the back yard and gives him a treat every morning.

'Max protects him by putting himself between strangers or other dogs. Just the other day Max rescued Julian's little toy wooden sail boat by swimming out when the wind blew it into the middle of the lake.

'My son cried telling him to go and get it and he sure did. Not that he ever fetches a stick or a ball otherwise!'
