this must be a universal trait.  let's hear the many, many versions of the same theme:

In the misfortune of our best friends, we always find something which is not displeasing to us.

We are all strong enough to bear the misfortunes of others.

This could suggest that the apes' capacity for emotion may have helped shape the way they live.

"These differences might be reflected in differences in how the apes choose to forage in the wild," said Dr Rosati.

"This might be why chimpanzees are more likely to engage in risky strategies like hunting, in that you could spend all day pursuing a monkey, but end up with nothing.

Overall, she said that the results suggested that decision-making in apes involved moods and motivations similar to our own.
#22608
The researchers recorded some very tantrum-like responses: vocalisations including "pout moans" and "screams", as well as anxious scratching and banging on the bars of the enclosure.

"Some of the reactions look similar to a kid [shouting] 'no, I wanted it!'," said Dr Rosati.

The results, Dr Rosati explained, suggest that the emotional component of decision-making - feelings of frustration and regret that are so fundamental to our own decisions - are intrinsic to ape society and are not uniquely human.

The researchers also found differences in the way the two species responded to the games; chimps were more willing to take risks, and also more patient than bonobos.
#22609
Dr Rosati, who studies problem-solving in apes in order to examine the origins of human behaviour, designed two games.

In the first, the animals could choose between receiving a relatively small food reward immediately, or receiving a larger reward but having to wait for it.

The second game involved choosing between a "safe" and a "risky" option. The safe option was six peanuts hidden under a bowl. But a second bowl concealed either a slice of cucumber or a highly favoured portion of banana.

Many of the apes - both bonobos and chimps - became emotional when they had to wait or took a gamble that did not pay off.
#22610
Some animals that lost the game - receiving a bland piece of cucumber rather than a preferred piece of banana - reacted with what looked like the ape equivalent of a tantrum.

The researchers worked with 23 chimps and 15 bonobos in two ape sanctuaries in the Republic of Congo.

"The animals were all [rescued] orphans of the bushmeat trade," explained lead researcher Alexandra Rosati, now at Yale University.

"They're sort of in semi-captivity, but it's possible to play games with them.

"It's as close as we can come to wild animals without actually being in the wild."

One chimp, named Timi, reacted to losing a gambling game with what looked very much like a tantrum

Like many humans, chimpanzees and bonobos react quite emotionally when they take risks that fail to pay off.

This is according to researchers from Duke University in the US, who developed decision-making games that the apes played to earn edible treats.

The relationship does not sit well with Pempengco's mother, Raquel, however, as the latter bared early this week that she strongly disapproves of Quijano for her daughter.

Raquel, in a press conference, pointed to Quijano as the reason for her daughter choosing to "turn her back" on her family.

The older Pempengco stressed that contrary to public speculation, her estrangement from her daughter does not stem from her disapproval of her sexual orientation, but due to their disagreement over the singer's girlfriend.
#22615

She was merged with other contestants to form the girl group AKA Jam, which, despite losing in "The X Factor," has remained active through performances on local TV.

Mom's disapproval

In May, first reports of Quijano and Pempengco's relationship surfaced, with the two rumored to have eloped. However, this was denied by Pempengco when she first admitted her sexual preference on "The Buzz" early this month.

Since Pempengco's emotional interview on "The Buzz," both she and Quijano have been open about their relationship, with the latter admitting that they even have a "promise ring."

Although the two were already well-acquainted by then, they wouldn't meet again until 7 years later when Quijano joined the singing contest "The X Factor Philippines."

During the time when Pempengco "lost communication" with Quijano, the former made waves abroad, when a viral YouTube video of her performing landed her a guesting on the American TV show "Ellen" in 2007.

Following her US TV debut, Pempengco had a string of successes internationally, including a concert tour with mentor David Foster, a widely released album, and a guest appearance on the hit TV musical "Glee."

In the Philippines, her achievements were followed up with a stint as a judge on the local edition of "The X Factor."

It was during the Kapamilya program when Pempengco and Quijano had a chance to resume communication.

Getting the approval of all four judges during her first audition, Quijano landed a spot in Gary Valenciano's stable of talents.
#22618
"Nagkakilala po kami noon [sa isang contest], 9 years old po siya, 10 years old po ako," Pempengco told "Showbiz Inside Report" in an interview aired on Saturday.

The 21-year-old singer recalled being friendly with Quijano the first time they met: "Ako po 'yung nagpakilala sa kanya, kasi na-cute-an ako sa kanya, tapos sabi niya, feeling niya ang yabang ko daw."

The two had already faced off several times in amateur singing contests when they, once again, became competitors in the ABS-CBN talent search "Little Big Star" in 2005.

At the time, Pempengco was already 13, Quijano, 12.

MANILA â€" The United Architects of the Philippines plans to meet to come up with building recommendations following the Two Serendra blast.

Architect Sonny Rosal, national president of the United Architects of the Philippines, said they are looking into the use of construction materials and the installation and composition of wall systems, among others.

“Were trying to look into what caused the accident so we can be aware of what to advise our clients. Within our organization we’re creating a committee just to make a study on how to make recommendations and keep our professionals aware of the materials, of the situations,” Rosal told ANC’s “Dateline Philippines” on Saturday.

Rosal also reminded building owners in Bonifacio Global City to check on their installations, wirings and connections.

He also urged condo-owners to check their facilities and unplug their appliances if not in use to ensure the safety of their homes.

Despite the recent explosion, Rosal believes that condominium units still make a good investment option, with sufficient checks on the developer's track record and compliance with structural guidelines. -- ANC

Most Indonesians practise a moderate form of Islam.

Rights group the National Commission on Violence Against Women urged people to take a more measured view of Miss World.

People should consider whether "the contest really looks at the women as humans and judges them based on their talents", said Andi Yentriyani, a commissioner with the group.

The organisers have insisted the decision not to have bikinis was taken when the deal was struck last year to host the show, and not after pressure from radicals.

Vocal protesters have succeeded in getting events cancelled in the past in Indonesia.

Last year, pop sensation Lady Gaga axed a concert after hardliners threatened to burn down the venue and criticised her for wearing only "a bra and panties".
#22659
"Supporting this event is the same as supporting the selling of women's bodies," said Ismail Yusanto, spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia, who also warned the group may organise protests.

"Women are lowering themselves by allowing themselves to be turned into objects, to be stared at and have their bodies measured."

Hardline group the Islam Reformist Movement (Garis), which is affiliated with prominent radicals the Islamic Defenders Front, also said the bikini ban was not enough.

"They will still wear outfits that will encourage sex and immoral acts," said Chep Hernawan, the head of Garis which has its base in West Java province.

More than 130 women will compete in the September event, with some rounds on the resort island of Bali and the final in Bogor outside Jakarta. Bogor is in West Java province, parts of which are considered a stronghold for radicals.

Organisers confirmed on Wednesday the contestants would not wear bikinis during the beach fashion section, to be held in Bali, and would instead wear more conservative attire such as traditional sarongs.

However, the concession was not enough for hardline groups in Indonesia, where some 90 percent of the 240 million population are Muslims.

Miss Indonesia Ines Putri Tjiptadi parades during the Miss World 2012 final ceremony in the inner Mongolian city of Ordos on August 18, 2012. Contestants at this year's Miss World beauty pageant will not wear bikinis in the parade in a bid to avoid causing offence in Muslim-majority Indonesia, organisers confirmed Wednesday.

Islamic hardliners vowed Thursday to stop the "immoral" Miss World beauty pageant taking place in Indonesia even after organisers agreed this year's contestants would not wear bikinis.

The Hizb ut-Tahrir group slammed the show as like "selling women's bodies" and threatened to hold demonstrations against it, while a group in the province where the final is due to take place also voiced strong opposition.

GIR is comprised of central bank assets held in different currencies, gold, special drawing rights, as well as the foreign exchange deposits of the government and other state-run firms. It indicates a country’s capability to pay for imports and service foreign debts.

The end-May reserves could cover 11.7 months’ worth of imports and were also equivalent to 9.8 times the country’s short-term external debt based on original maturity and 6.6 times based on residual maturity. Based on BSP standards, the GIR is considered adequate if it can finance three months’ worth of imports or cover 100% of the country’s foreign liabilities.

“These outflows were partially offset by inflows from the foreign exchange operations and income from investments abroad of the BSP as well as foreign currency deposits by the national government,” the central bank said.

Broken down, the BSP’s foreign investments comprised bulk of GIR at $71.507 billion, while special drawing rights accounted for $1.27 billion.

Foreign exchange comprised $948.98 million and reserve positions, $523.76 million.

From a year earlier, meanwhile, the end-May GIR level was up 8.95%.

It also comprised 96.39% of the BSP’s full-year forecast of $86 billion just five months into 2013.

Gold entered a bear market in April as bad news dimmed the global economic outlook. Investors lost their faith in metals, selling off their holdings for bonds and stocks. The price of gold fell below $1,400 last month.

Central bank Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr. has said that reserves could take a hit from falling prices, but he insisted that gold remained a “good diversification strategy” since it moved opposite the US dollar.

Other than gold, the end-May GIR level decreased because the government paid for maturing foreign exchange obligations, while the state-run Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. withdrew foreign currency.

THE COUNTRY’S gross international reserves (GIR) shrank anew last month to $82.892 billion, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported on Friday, with falling gold prices again partly responsible.

The end-May result was down from the $83.213 billion as of April, which was also lower than the $83.95 billion recorded in the first three months of the year.

“The slight decline in the reserves was due mainly to revaluation adjustments on the BSP’s gold holdings arising from the decrease in the price of gold in the international market...,” the central bank said in a statement.

Gold accounted for $8.642 billion as of May -- the lowest since December 2011’s $8.013 billion. It was also 21.74% lower than the record $11.043 billion in September 2012.

Weibo poster Hu Qijun said: "They claim to aim for fairness, but enrolment, education and employment have turned so unfair we have entered an age where your fate is determined by who your father is. So what's the point of making one single exam fair?"

Questions can be bizarre. "If Thomas Edison returned to the 21st century, what would he think of cellphones?" one province asked this year, requiring an 800-character answer, according to the Sina web portal.

The central province of Hunan offered the single phrase "Walk past" as the topic for a writing composition, the report said.

The test has come under fierce criticism on China for putting enormous pressure on students, and as a symbol of educational inequality, with many low-income students whose parents have migrated to cities barred from taking the exam in their new homes.

Top institutions also generally demand higher entry qualifications for applicants from other provinces.
#22668
There are more than seven million university places available in China for the next academic year, so that most of those who take the test will secure one, but where they will go is hugely dependent on their results.

In Beijing, Chinese, mathematics and English are compulsory subjects, with one other paper in either arts or sciences, and the exam is scored out of a maximum 750 points.

China's top educational institutions such as Peking University or Tsinghua, also in the capital, can demand scores of around 600 or more.

Parents across the country visited temples to make offerings for their children's success, the Global Times said, while photos showed others waiting outside exam rooms with food and drink specially prepared for their children.

Some measures to ensure students reach the annual test on time can be extreme. Pictures posted online showed an amphibious fire engine ploughing through water to deliver a boy dressed in school uniform to the exam in a remote part of Inner Mongolia.

The southern city of Guangzhou introduced dedicated lanes for vehicles taking students to the gaokao, local media said, while parents in China's business hub of Shanghai booked taxis a week in advance for their children.

Alternatively, families rent rooms in nearby hotels to avoid wasting valuable study time commuting to exam halls, the website of the state-run People's Daily reported.

Officials aimed to crack down on "sales of high-tech gear for cheating, and gaokao-related fraud", the Global Times said.

But users of China's Twitter-like weibos were scornful. "Everyone is paying attention to the bras. What about glasses?" said one.

More than nine million students packed exam halls across China for the opening day of the country's university entrance exam on Friday -- with attempts to stop cheating even leading to bans on metal bra clasps.

Students in the northeastern province of Jilin were banned from wearing clothing with metal parts and education authorities installed metal detectors in exam centres to clamp down on "wireless cheating devices", the state-run Global Times reported.

Authorities have become increasingly concerned about the risk of examinees using devices such as smartphones -- some of which have become smaller and easier to hide -- as an illicit aid during tests.

Putin with Alina Kabaeva
#22676
What is surprising is that the couple chose to announce their split publicly. Why now? Is he preparing to make public a relationship that he has denied existed with the former gymnast Alina Kabaeva? Rumours have long swirled that the pair have a child, or even two children, together, but the one Russian newspaper to publish a story on the alleged relationship was closed down soon after, and the only reporter to ask Mr Putin was told that journalists should keep their “snotty noses and erotic fantasies” out of his life. Ms Kabaeva turned 30 last month, and recently told a Russian television programme that she had found the man of her dreams, but refused to name him.
#22677
Indeed, if there was schadenfreude in the air, it was mainly over the absurdity of the charade that went on for so long. For years, Ms Putina has cut something of a tragic figure, and ever more extraordinary rumours began to surface about her â€" that she had been confined to a nunnery, or dispatched to a clinic in Western Europe to receive treatment for unspecified illnesses.

In official interviews, it was clear that all was not well. “I don’t make plans any more,” she said in 2001, the year after her husband first became President. “Before, I used to make them, and then when they didn’t work out, it was always very painful and depressing. Then I realised that it was easiest not to make any plans, and then you wouldn’t be disappointed.”
#22678
Mr Putin drew a sharp intake of breath, but he did not look surprised, mainly because the question clearly had been planted. Every Russian journalist has known for years that it would be the end of their career if they dared to ask this question. This time, however, Mr Putin nodded that yes, they were splitting up. In awkward responses, the couple said that they never see each other any more, and agreed that they had completed a “civilised divorce”.

The Russian blogosphere erupted in collective cackling. “The whole cabinet has announced they will be immediately divorcing their wives,” was one popular joke. There were some voices of sympathy. Ksenia Sobchak, the socialite turned opposition activist, said it was hypocritical to castigate Mr Putin for doing what many had said he should do all along. “For years, I’ve heard people say that it would be good if Putin told the truth and divorced,” she wrote. “And what now? Everyone is criticising him. It looks a bit pathetic.” Among the public at large, his ratings are not likely to be hit by the news. Although he has championed family values, divorce rates in Russia are high.
#22679
These periodic Kremlin attempts to show that rumours of the couple’s separation and Mr Putin’s alleged extra-curricular activities were false backfired spectacularly. For some time, it has not taken a specialist in body language to observe that all is not well in the House of Putin.

The joint trip to the ballet appeared to be another attempt to keep the charade up, but then two hours later, its real purpose became clear. “Today, Yuri Bashmet put on a production of the ballet La Esmeralda in the State Kremlin Palace, based on Victor Hugo’s novel,” droned the presenter on state-controlled television, in a spectacular case of what journalists call “burying the lead”. She continued: “Among the viewers were President Vladimir Putin and his wife.” There followed clips of the ballet, and two minutes of discussion about the ballet techniques and how the couple had enjoyed it. Then, suddenly: “You so rarely appear in public together, and there are rumours that you don’t live together. Is it true?”

SHAUN WALKER   MOSCOW  FRIDAY 07 JUNE 2013

At around 8pm on Thursday, the Russian news wires flashed up an announcement that Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila had gone to the theatre to see the ballet La Esmeralda.

When the Russian leader is filmed rolling in the snow with huskies, nuzzling a horse or guiding a flock of birds from a microlight, there is often an expression of unfettered joy and excitement on his face, and an easy swagger about his movements. In the few outings he has made with Lyudmila recently, most notably an excruciating televised appearance to fill out the Russia-wide census in 2010, he has exhibited all the natural ease of a Madame Tussauds waxwork.
