In Lhasa sky burials are performed at dawn at special burial grounds, near a temple, that have been used for such burials for centuries. The rituals are closed to outsiders. In remote areas of Tibet the burials can sometimes be observed by outsiders. Participants of funerals regard ogling tourists as invasions of their privacy. Taking photographs is considered to be horrible manners.

When a body arrives the hair is cut off, the body is cut into pieces and the bones are pulverized and mixed with tsampa for the vultures to eat. Before stripping the flesh off the bones the monk who does the deed usually sharpens his knife on the sides or a rock, walks around a monument and says a prayer.
#22003
"Sky burials” are the most common way of disposing of dead bodies in Tibet. The body of the deceased is carried to a monastery on the backs of close friends and cut into little pieces by monks or members of a professional caste, and the pieces are fed to vultures who carry the spirit skyward to heaven. Family members of the deceased are often nearby but not actually at the site of the burial.

After true death has occurred the dead begins his journey towards rebirth and this may involve communion with gods, demons, hungry ghosts or a trip to hell. All this occurs with the understanding that post-death experiences are not real, but projections of consciousness that causes birth, death and rebirth.

Tibetans believe that individuals' souls remain in bar do, a special zone for the newly dead, for 49 days after death, during which time they enter a new body (that of a human, a hell being, a god, or an animal) to start a new cycle of life, death and rebirth. On each of the 49 days the deceased passes through a new level.
#22006
Death is viewed as a transformation not an end. Tibetan are encouraged to witness death and the disposal of bodies so they do not fear death or are in awe of it. This is one reason why ritual objects are often made from human bones. After death, the body is kept in a sitting position for 24 hours while a lama recites passages from The Tibetan Book of the Dead to help guide the dead to the afterlife. Three days after death the deceased is blessed with morning prayers and taken to a monastery for the funeral.

TIBETAN FUNERALS AND DEATH

Tibetans believe that the cessation of breathing is only the first stage of death. Afterwards, they believe, the soul separates out of the various “subtle elements.” First, the earth elements dissolve into the water elements. As this happens the dead loses his sense of sight and feels like he is shriveling up. As the water elements dissolve into the air element the dead loses his hearing and feels surrounded by smoke. After the soul separates from the body, various levels of consciousness disappear and the deceased emerges into translucent light. This is when Tibetans believe that true death has occurred.

The majority of Tibetans adhere to Buddhism, which teaches rebirth. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may cause it to decompose. Thus, the function of the sky burial is simply to dispose of the remains. In much of Tibet, the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and, due to the scarcity of fuel and timber, sky burials are often more practical than cremation. High lamas and some other dignitaries may receive burials so as to honor them in death, but sky burials were standard practice for commoners. (wikipedia)

Sky burial is a funerary practice in Tibet wherein a human corpse is incised in certain locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements (mahabhuta) and animals â€" especially predatory birds. The locations of preparation and sky burial are understood in the Vajrayana traditions as charnel grounds. In Tibet the practice is known as jhator, which means "giving alms to the birds." 22. Accept what cannot be changed.

Once you accept the fact that life is not fair, you’ll be more at peace with yourself. Instead of obsessing over how unfair life is, just focus on what you can control and change it for the better.

http://successify.net/

#22012
21. Establish personal control.

Happy people have the ability to choose their own destinies. They don’t let others tell them how they should live their lives. Being in complete control of one’s own life brings positive feelings and a great sense of self-worth.

#22013
20. Tell the truth.

Lying stresses you out, corrodes your self-esteem, and makes you unlikeable. The truth will set you free. Being honest improves your mental health and builds others’ trust in you. Always be truthful, and never apologize for it.

#22014
19. Live minimally.

Happy people rarely keep clutter around the house because they know that extra belongings weigh them down and make them feel overwhelmed and stressed out. Some studies have concluded that Europeans are a lot happier than Americans are, which is interesting because they live in smaller homes, drive simpler cars, and own fewer items.

Mayon, about 330 kilometres (200 miles) southeast of Manila, has erupted 48 times in recorded history.

In 1814, more than 1,200 people were killed when lava flows buried the town of Cagsawa.

In December 2009 tens of thousands of villagers were displaced when Mayon spewed ash and lava.

The volcano also erupted in August 2006. There were no direct deaths caused by the explosion, but the following December a passing typhoon unleashed an avalanche of volcanic mud from its slopes that killed 1,000 people. - Rappler.com, with reports from Agence France-Presse

Caught by suprise

Residents in towns around the picturesque volcano famous for its near-perfect cone said they were surprised by the sudden activity, which came as many were having breakfast.

"It was so sudden that many of us panicked," Jun Marana, a 46-year-old bus driver and father of two, told AFP by telephone.

"When we stepped out we saw this huge column against the blue sky."

Marana said the ash column was dispersed by winds after about an hour, but said he was not taking his chances and was prepared to leave his home anytime.

Salceda, on his Facebook page, also said that the provincial government is already organizing a rescue mission for the mountaineers still on the slopes of Mayon.

He later issued a ban on all activities within the Permanent Danger Zone, including farming and mountain climbing.
#22018
"It is strongly advised that the public refrain from entering the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the threat of sudden steam-driven eruptions and rock falls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano," Phivolcs added.

Casualties

Albay Governor Joey Salceda said on the ABS-CBN News Channel that 5 mountain climbers died after being hit by rocks cascading down the slopes of the volcano. Four were foreigners, he said, while the other one was a local tour guide.

He said they have yet to confirm the identities of the deceased climbers, as the bodies still have to be brought down from the volcano.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports at least 7 climbers were also injured. There have been three groups of mountain climbers going up the volcano when the event happened, Eduardo del Rosario NDRRMC Executive Director, said on ANC.
#22019
"The gray to brown clouds reached 500 meters above the summit and drifted west southwest. No volcanic earthquake was detected within the past 24-hour observation period," Phivolcs said.

The agency said levels of seismic and gas emissions from the volcano are still very low, which does not indicate any heightened activity.

The alert level for the volcano is still at zero, which means "no eruption is imminent." "However, small phreatic explosions including small steam and ash ejections may occur suddenly with little or no warning," the agency warned.

Solidum also told dzBB that they will continue monitoring Mayon to see if they need to raise the volcano's alert level.

Casualties after Mayon spews ash

MANILA, Philippines (10th UPDATE) - Five people are confirmed dead after the Mayon Volcano spewed rocks and steam in a phreatic explosion Tuesday, May 7.

"Mayon Volcano at 8:00:25 AM today, produced a small phreatic event that lasted about 73 seconds," the Phivolcs said in its official advisory.

A phreatic explosion is caused by the heating of water by the magma underneath the volcano's crater, sending steam, water, and volcanic material out.

18. Exercise.

Studies have shown that exercise raises happiness levels just as much as Zoloft does. Exercising also boosts your self-esteem and gives you a higher sense of self-accomplishment.

#22022
17. Eat well.

Junk food makes you sluggish, and it’s difficult to be happy when you’re in that kind of state. Everything you eat directly affects your body’s ability to produce hormones, which will dictate your moods, energy, and mental focus. Be sure to eat foods that will keep your mind and body in good shape.

#22023
16. Meditate.

Meditating silences your mind and helps you find inner peace. You don’t have to be a zen master to pull it off. Happy people know how to silence their minds anywhere and anytime they need to calm their nerves.

#22024
15. Nurture social relationships.

A lonely person is a miserable person. Happy people understand how important it is to have strong, healthy relationships. Always take the time to see and talk to your family, friends, or significant other.

14. Take the time to listen.

Talk less; listen more. Listening keeps your mind open to others’ wisdoms and outlooks on the world. The more intensely you listen, the quieter your mind gets, and the more content you feel.

#22030
13. Never seek approval from others.

Happy people don’t care what others think of them. They follow their own hearts without letting naysayers discourage them. They understand that it’s impossible to please everyone. Listen to what people have to say, but never seek anyone’s approval but your own.

#22031
12. Choose friends wisely.

Misery loves company. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with optimistic people who will encourage you to achieve your goals. The more positive energy you have around you, the better you will feel about yourself.

here's a saner bit:

In Tsarnaev's case, his parents are alive and in the Russian region of Dagestan. But Tamerlan Tsarnaev held a passport from the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, where he was born, so his remains can't be sent to Russia, said Zaurbek Sadakhanov, a lawyer for the parents.

Tsarnaev had requested a Russian passport but had not received one, Sadakhanov said. His parents have not asked that his body be brought to Russia -- and in any event, Russian law says the bodies of "terrorists" killed by government forces should be buried in an undisclosed location, without the family being notified of the site, he said. Burying mass murderers... continued

Many infamous mass murderers like Adam Lanza, Dylan Klebold, and Ted Bundy have reportedly been cremated. That is not a likely option in this case. Most observant Muslims do not believe that cremation is an acceptable method of disposition for human remains. If the family of Tamerlan Tsarnaev rejects cremation as an option, then it will likely find that Massachusetts law will provide little assistance in securing a burial place for him.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/
#22040
Of course, all cemeteries are sacred places. But we do not generally require a moral litmus test before remains are accepted for burial. For those who die while incarcerated, many state prisons have their own cemeteries for inmates whose bodies go unclaimed. But Tsarnaev died before he could be convicted, so a prison cemetery is not an option. If no cemetery in Massachusetts will take Tsarnaev, what happens to his remains? They cannot simply stay in the funeral home forever. Something must be done.
#22041
Tsarnaev's are not the first infamous set of remains posing these questions. Before Timothy McVeigh's 2001 execution in Terre Haute, Indiana, Congress enacted 38 USC § 2411, which prohibits those convicted of certain capital crimes from being buried in "federally funded cemeteries" like Arlington National Cemetery. This legislation was deemed necessary because, as a veteran, McVeigh otherwise had a right to be buried in a national cemetery. Representative Joseph Knollenberg of Michigan explained the reasoning behind the legislation: "Our Nation's cemeteries are sacred ground. They are a solemn and sad reminder of the price our Nation has paid for the freedom that we enjoy every day. It is not fitting to allow the likes of Timothy McVeigh or any other death penalty convict in the company of our fallen heroes." McVeigh was cremated after his execution, and his cremains were released to his attorney.
#22042
Massachusetts law does provide that each town shall provide one or more "suitable places" for people dying within town limits (M.G.L.A. 114 § 10). Although no case interprets this statute to provide that town cemeteries must accept the remains of any person who died within town limits, it is a reasonable interpretation. Tsarnaev's death certificate indicates that he died at 1:35 a.m. It is unclear whether he died on the street in Watertown, in the ambulance, or at the hospital in Boston. If the funeral director can confirm where he died, his strongest argument is that Massachusetts law requires that town's cemetery to accept Tsarnaev's remains. Of course, the communities in Massachusetts least likely to want to bury Tsarnaev are Watertown and Boston. Regardless, he did not die in Worchester, so there appears to be no legal requirement that the town cemetery in Worchester, or certainly any private cemetery in Worchester, accept his burial.
#22043
Although the law requires that bodies be decently disposed of within a "reasonable" time after death, it does not provide clear answers about how to accomplish that. For example, no Massachusetts statute requires a cemetery to accept a body for burial. In 2003, in LaCava v. Lucander, the Appeals Court of Massachusetts held that there is no fundamental right to be buried in the cemetery of one's choosing. In that case, a man who had been convicted of killing his wife asked to be buried in the same Westminster, Massachusetts town cemetery where his wife rested. The cemetery commission denied his request, but offered him a plot in another town cemetery.
#22044
The answer to the legal questions depends in large part on what state hosts the remains. There is very little federal law on this subject. In this case, Tsarnaev died in Massachusetts and his body is apparently currently located in Massachusetts, so that state's law is most relevant.

Like most states, Massachusetts law provides that "every dead body of a human being dying within the commonwealth ... shall be decently buried, entombed in a mausoleum, vault or tomb or cremated within a reasonable time after death." (M.G.L.A. 114 § 43M) The person having custody of the remains is charged with carrying out this obligation. In Tsarnaev's case, his uncle appears to have taken responsibility for his remains after Tsarnaev's wife refused.

Burying Mass Murderers: The Problem of Tamerlan Tsarnaev

Tanya D. Marsh
Professor, Wake Forest Law School
05/05/2013

The Worcester, Massachusetts funeral director with possession of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has reported that cemeteries in multiple states have refused to permit burial of his body.

This situation raises several important questions regarding the disposition of human remains. After a person dies, we clearly need to make decisions regarding final disposition, for public health reasons as well as closure for the family and community. But what happens when the remains are those of a person believed to have committed a horrific, recent crime?

how true, loll.  cremation, though, is out of the question because he is a muslim.  that, too, has to be respected, aside from his remains.

i guess the real problem here is the living.

"My problem here is trying to find a gravesite. A lot of people don't want to do it. They don't want to be involved with this," said Stefan, who said dozens of protesters gathered outside his funeral home, upset with his decision to handle the service. 11. Avoid social comparison.

Everyone works at his own pace, so why compare yourself to others? If you think you’re better than someone else, you gain an unhealthy sense of superiority. If you think someone else is better than you, you end up feeling bad about yourself. You’ll be happier if you focus on your own progress and praise others on theirs.

#22050
10. Wake up at the same time every morning.

Have you noticed that a lot of successful people tend to be early risers? Waking up at the same time every morning stabilizes your circadian rhythm, increases productivity, and puts you in a calm and centered state.

#22051
9. Get absorbed into the present.

Happy people don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. They savor the present. They let themselves get immersed in whatever they’re doing at the moment. Stop and smell the roses.

#22052
8. Never make excuses.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” Happy people don’t make excuses or blame others for their own failures in life. Instead, they own up to their mistakes and, by doing so, they proactively try to change for the better.

#22053
7. Speak well of others.

Being nice feels better than being mean. As fun as gossiping is, it usually leaves you feeling guilty and resentful. Saying nice things about other people encourages you to think positive, non-judgmental thoughts.

#22054
6. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Happy people ask themselves, “Will this problem matter a year from now?” They understand that life’s too short to get worked up over trivial situations. Letting things roll off your back will definitely put you at ease to enjoy the more important things in life.

#22055
5. Dream big.

People who get into the habit of dreaming big are more likely to accomplish their goals than those who don’t. If you dare to dream big, your mind will put itself in a focused and positive state.

#22056
4. Express gratitude for what they already have.

There’s a popular saying that goes something like this: “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.” You will have a deeper sense of contentment if you count your blessings instead of yearning for what you don’t have.

#22057
3. See problems as challenges.

The word “problem” is never part of a happy person’s vocabulary. A problem is viewed as a drawback, a struggle, or an unstable situation while a challenge is viewed as something positive like an opportunity, a task, or a dare. Whenever you face an obstacle, try looking at it as a challenge.

#22058
2. Treat everyone with kindness.

Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that being kind makes you happier? Every time you perform a selfless act, your brain produces serotonin, a hormone that eases tension and lifts your spirits. Not only that, but treating people with love, dignity, and respect also allows you to build stronger relationships.

#22059
1. Don’t hold grudges.

Happy people understand that it’s better to forgive and forget than to let their negative feelings crowd out their positive feelings. Holding a grudge has a lot of detrimental effects on your well-being, including increased depression, anxiety, and stress. Why let anyone who has wronged you have power over you? If you let go of all your grudges, you’ll gain a clear conscience and enough energy to enjoy the good things in life.

22 Things Happy People Do Differently

This article is from Chiara Fucarino. Enjoy!

There are two types of people in the world: those who choose to be happy, and those who choose to be unhappy. Contrary to popular belief, happiness doesn’t come from fame, fortune, other people, or material possessions. Rather, it comes from within. The richest person in the world could be miserable while a homeless person could be right outside, smiling and content with their life. Happy people are happy because they make themselves happy. They maintain a positive outlook on life and remain at peace with themselves.

The question is: how do they do that?

It’s quite simple. Happy people have good habits that enhance their lives. They do things differently. Ask any happy person, and they will tell you that they …

Myth: Cinco de Mayo is only celebrated in the United States

Fact: Not exactly. The original observances were impromptu celebrations by Mexicans living in California as early as 1863 as a show of resistance to the short-lived French rule of Mexico but Poblanos have been celebrating almost as long as that. Even though it’s not a federal holiday in Mexico it is indeed a very important state holiday in Puebla and neighboring Veracruz. Schools are closed and people take the day off.

There are festivals, parades and an elaborate annual reenactment of the battle itself. While most people prefer to play the role of the victorious Mexican soldiers, those that must play French soldiers do so with bottles of wine sticking out of their backpacks.

Myth: Mexico defeated the French Invasion

Fact: They won the battle but not the war. The victory was inspirational but short-lived against Napoleon’s resolve to conquer Mexico in order to reach his ultimate destination which was the United States.

The French regrouped and returned with over 30,000 troops easily taking Puebla and then toppling Mexico City and forcing President Benito Juarez’s government into exile.

Myth: Mexican forces in Puebla were a ragtag operation and overwhelmingly outnumbered

Fact: The French attack on Puebla led by General Charles de Lorencez was approximately 6,000 against 4,000 and Puebla was heavily fortified at the time. After the Reform War the government had taken control of Puebla which had two strategically placed hilltop forts. Although there were significantly less Mexican army regulars (around 1,000), the Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin had the distinct tactical advantages of terrain familiarity, guerilla training and the element of surprise.

Lorencez was operating on false reports that Puebla was friendly toward the French, unprepared and would fall easily to a show of force. He was also unfamiliar with the weather patterns and launched an attack that was too direct and too late in the day. His forces began running low on ammunition early on due to his miscalculation of the intensity of the opposition and the typical afternoon heavy rain created a muddy mess that all but crippled French artillery.

Myth: The French invasion of Mexico was only about money

Fact: For the Spanish and English it was but not necessarily the French. The civil war in Mexico known as the Reform War left the country in financial shambles and by 1861 President Benito Juarez had suspended payments on all foreign debt. Under the auspices of the London Treaty, Napoleon would encourage Spain and the UK to join France in an invasion presumably meant to put pressure on Mexico to resume payments. But Napoleon’s real interest was to colonize and conquer Mexico in order to gain easier access to the U.S. to help the Confederates and keep the U.S. divided into two less powerful contingents. Once Spain and the U.K. discovered Napoleon’s real intentions they withdrew their troops.

“This is really supposed to give the public an opportunity to have a connection to the mission and the planet,” said Stephanie Renfrow, lead for the MAVEN Education and Public Outreach program at Colorado at Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (CU/LASP). “It’s not so much about sending a message to the universe.”

According to Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN principal investigator from CU/LASP, the idea is to reach “the next generation of explorers and excite them about science, technology, engineering and math.”

MAVEN is the first spacecraft devoted to exploring and understanding the Martian upper atmosphere. The spacecraft will orbit Mars and investigate how the loss of Mars' atmosphere to space determined the history of water on the planet’s surface. The initial mission is slated to last a year, but could be extended.

MAVEN Mission Seeks Poems for Space

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission is part of NASA's Mars Scout program, funded by NASA Headquarters.

Matthew Hilburn
May 02, 2013

Are you a poet and a space geek?

If so, NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is offering a unique chance to send your poem all the way to Mars aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft that will be launched in November.

Poems should be in the form of a haiku, and the deadline for submissions is July 1. Through an online public vote, the top three will be selected and burned onto a DVD, which will be placed aboard MAVEN. Anyone who sends in a submission will also have their name burned onto the DVD. Voting will begin July 15.

Participants who submit their poems to the Going to Mars campaign will be able to print a certificate of appreciation to document their involvement with the MAVEN mission.

A South Korean traditional gate guard beats a drum during the reopening ceremony of landmark Sungnyemun gate in Seoul. Five years after an arsonist destroyed it, the stone-and-wood southern gate to the old walled capital of Seoul has been painstakingly restored to its late 14th century glory by a small army of master craftsmen using traditional tools.
