2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

I should not rely solely on my abilities. Instead, rely on the LORD.

But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

I can be arrogant. I admit this. In my question for education and knowledge, pride grew. This is not good. As too much pride and assertion of one's abilities can strain one's relationship with the LORD. Knowledge/Wisdom that is acquired is not because of our own abilities, but by God's Grace.

I was reminded one time by a very direct old woman who gave me a verse that touched my heart. She is an old Filipina nurse who reminded me to be grounded.

I thank her for it.

The verse that she shared with me is from 1 Corinthians Chapter 8 verse 1-2.

"Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up."

reminds me of a friend of mine.

a pinoy medical student (a classmate of mine); when he was studying for his medical boards (USMLE 1,2,3), he paid old women back in the philippines to do a novena benediction for him that he passed his boards. He asked them to pray for him for 1 month non stop. He paid them each 5k pesos each.

he scored a 240 on his boards. (that is 99th percentile).

i think he went to the "Ina nga panabang".

talk about paying for prayers eh?

addendum: one night i was at the doctor's lounge with the attendings that night. (Dr. P, an endocrinologist). The night shift was dead, patients were stabilized and he (Dr. P) was talking to me about his situation; a problem kono. He didn't know what kind of care he wanted to buy for his son (soon to be graduating high school): a BMW X5 (2011 model) or a Cadillac Escalade (2011 model).

Raquel,

Even tho health insurance is expensive, it is an asset that one needs to have. The cost of medical insurance and one's premium may be quite high, however, in cases of medical emergency, this becomes essential.

I will give you an example: i had a patient (24 year old male) who came to the hospital complaining of acute abdominal pain, after a physical exam and then taking lab tests and ordering an MRI/XR, we diagnosed his situation as an acute appendicitis. He had an emergency appendectomy. This surgical procedure cost his insurance company $16,000.00. Now, tho this patient was paying $200 a month for insurance coverage, it really saved him in the end. If he did not have insurance, he would have been expected to pay for the cost of surgery in cash. Delikado ning situwasyon.

Murag mag stressful ang kinabuhi sa daghan ug kwarta kay ma stress ka maghunahuna ug mag ihap ug asa nimo taguan ug unsay gastuan daghan stress naglinya samtang ang pobre ma stress ra Dre ug asa ug kwarta.Usa ray stress sa pobre ug asa ug kwarta vs. sa dato.

There is a proverbial saying that goes by, "The more money, the more stress."

With a superfluous amount of money, one's principles can change. Money, the quest for money (greed) can change people.

Maayo pa ang simple man with an honest living kai he is able to go to bed at night knowing he didn't con/scam anyone or take advantage of anyone's wages. But through honest, hard work, earned his wages.

Mao jud Toy way stress ug permi ta ka feel sa hinoyohoy sa hangin. Maglingkod lingkod sa patio nag atubang sa dagat inom inom ug bahal kay gikan nagkilaw ug lab as nga isda.

Raquel,

It would also add sweetness to one's life in having 4-5 children when living in the country side. A nice payag for a home, fresh food every day, a good wife, 4-5 children, na hala!

I wouldn't mind that at all. Having my kids hilut me every night. The Mrs. and I would be busy making 'gugma gugma' every night sigoro. Ingon raba ang mga tawo sa bukid sa Valencia, "Ondoy, tamiis kaajo ang u-wag u-wag diri sa bukid. Tamis kaajo!"

:P
#22016
In the Philippines, it is very hard to live only with 10 k pesos if one lives in the city. Pero, if you live in a comfortable payag in Inabanga, with some carabao farming your little rice plot , and grow some frutas, and vegetables on the side. One can also even invest in animal farming: raising pigs (baktin) and selling them, raising goat (canding), raising manok etc.

I think that 10k pesos a month plus farming on the side can support a family.

Happy Easter, Everyone!

God Bless Us All!

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: "What have you done?"

I believe that the Philippines does not need super ships. We do not need destroyers or expensive frigates.

If the Philippines can have 20-30 of these kinds of ships, armed with depth charges (for anti-submarine capability) and with ARM/Sidewinder missiles for anti-air capability as well as Phalanx anti-ship missile defense system, then these ships can be a formidable force.

The Philippines just needs to attach 4-6 missile pods on the back that can launch ship-based anti-ship missiles.

Considering that we are an island nation, we need many of these small ships not those large and slow destroyeres or frigates.

The Chinese feel that they are being contained by a duplicitous United States. In their view, the United States is continuing its defense sales to Taiwan, a nation that the People's Republic of China considers a rogue province. Any and most of Taiwan's defense structure and armament are from the United States Military. In regards to the Philippines, the recent Visiting Armed Forces Agreement between Manila and Washington have bolstered old ties and the annual CARAT exercises between the navies of the United States and the Philippines have added a 3 dimensional structure between the two powers; enabling the two countries to combat terrorism in the region as well as re-vitalizing their 5-decade old mutual defense treaty, which places the Philippine's as America's Major Non-Nato Ally.

China, with a growing military defense policy and a growing military force, believes that the region should be a Chinese Lake. It claims total sovereignty on the entire Spratlys and Scarborough Shoal, which is claimed by other nations: namely the Philippines and Vietnam, the two countries being the staunchest in their claim; aside from China, of course.

China cannot and will not engage the Philippine Navy directly. Tho she (China) can probably sink most of the Philippine Surface Fleet, it will be received by the global community, and most importantly the United States, as an act of unwarranted aggression to the Philippines. The United States would send the US Pacific Command to aid the Philippines, which, at this time, the People's Republic of China cannot afford to engage.

China can only claim and bully foreign ships. In the end of the day, she cannot engage the Philippines directly. For now...
#22061

U.S.- Philippines Security Relations

The post-U.S. bases era has seen U.S.-Philippine relations improved and broadened, with a prominent focus on economic and commercial ties while maintaining the importance of the security dimension.

…a strong security relationship rests on the 1952 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT).

February 1998 - U.S. and Philippine negotiators concluded the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), paving the way for increased military cooperation under the MDT. The agreement was approved by the Philippine Senate in May 1999 and entered into force on June 1, 1999.

October 2003 - the U.S. designated the Philippines as a Major Non-NATO Ally.

January 2011 - U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt M. Campbell said  that the United States will help boost the capacity of the Philippines to patrol their own waters, including the Spratly islands.

(wikipedia)

The Philippines has supported America's operations in Asia. In the Korean War, a Philippine Batallion was sent and was able to neutralize over 10,000 Chinese during its operations there.

The Philippines also sent an engineering Batallion to support American operations in the Vietnam War. During that time, the Philippine Armed Forces had man power of 250,000 strong (not including auxiliary and national reserve).

During this time The Philippines was operating F-6 Phantoms as air superiority fighters. Chinese Migs would have been sitting ducks to these fighters (during that time).

Bible Study / Abraham's Prayer for Sodom
April 22, 2011, 12:44:58 AM
Genesis 18:20-33 NIV

Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing - to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge [c] of all the earth do right?"

The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?"

"If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it."

Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are found there?"
He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it."

Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?"
He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."

Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?"
He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it."

Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?"
He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

If the Philippine Government was not so corrupt and the generals and admirals would not pocket the military defense budget for 'personal use', then our military would be a 1st class military. Our military could be equal , even greater to that of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand.

If we had a 1st class military, we could rely on our own military power and readiness and not so much on American alliance.

it always saddens me hear incidents in which lazy and reprobate people take advantage of honest and hard working citizens.

i believe that in the end, those who perpetuate said crimes will pay for their actions.

i believe that GOD is not deaf, GOD is not blind, to these said actions...

sometimes, its best for us to move on to another person who does not hurt us and degrade our persona, and our feelings.

better to cut off ties with people like that.

The corrupt politicians in the Philippines have prevented the Philippines from modernizing effectively in years past. Now, when we need updated military defense equipment, and given the precarious situation we have in sharing sea lanes with a rising hegemon, we are left somewhat defenseless.

If America was not our ally, CHINA would have already taken the Kalayaan Islands. Just as China did to Vietnamese-occupied and Vietnamese- claimed parts of the Spratly's in 1989.

The chinese claim of these islands are new and are driven because of China's desperate need to raw natural resources. Prior to recent findings that the Spratly Islands having some untold billion units of natural gas, there was no interest in the region.

MANILA, Philippines (April 14, 2011) â€" The Chinese government cannot accept the claims of the Philippines on its sovereignty over some islands in South China Sea, a high ranking official of China said today.

This after the Philippine government filed a protest before the United Nation, claiming control over parts of Nansha Islands, parts of the Kalayaan Group of Islands.

In a regular briefing in Beijing today, spokesman of China’s foreign ministry Hong Lei said: “China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and adjacent waters.”

“China owns sovereignty and jurisdiction over the related sea area, seabed and subsoil,” Hong pointed out.

“The sovereignty of China over the South China Sea and related rights and jurisdiction are well-grounded from both historical and legal perspectives,” Hong added.

Early last month, the China insists sovereignty on the area where a Filipino ship, searching for oil near the disputed Spratly Islands, were allegedly harassed by Chinese patrol boats.

In a statement, Ethan Sun, China’s spokesman and deputy chief of Political Section here, said his nation has sovereignty over the area where the reported harassment happened.

“What I want to point out is that, ever since ancient times, China has indisputable sovereignty over Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters,” he cited.
He assured that China is sticking to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, and committed to maintaining peace and stability in the area.

“The Chinese side maintains that the related disputes should be resolved through peaceful negotiations,” he added.

The statement came after the Philippine government sought explanation of the incident, where two Chinese patrol boats allegedly harassed a Philippine boat near the disputed islands.

The March 4 incident prompted the United States to call on the Philippine and Chinese governments to exercise restraint over the incident.

U.S. Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. said the two countries must exercise “restraint” in resolving the issue.

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Philippines plans to acquire patrol ships, aircraft and an air defence radar system so it is better able to guard its territory in and near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, the country's military chief said Monday.

China, the Philippines and four other countries and territories claim all or parts of the Spratlys, which is believed to have vast oil and gas reserves, teem with rich fishing grounds and straddle one of the world's busiest sea lanes. They have long been regarded as a potential flash point for conflict in Asia.

Military chief Gen. Eduardo Oban said it remains uncertain when the massive funding for the acquisitions, initially estimated at about $181 million (8 billion pesos), could be made available, but the government has asked the military to submit a list of equipment needed to strengthen territorial defence in Palawan, the southwestern Philippine province nearest the Spratlys.

At least $700,000 (31 million pesos) could soon be disbursed for the repair of a worn-out airstrip on Pag-asa, the largest island occupied by Filipino troops in the contested Spratlys, Oban said.

"We're pushing for capability development to safeguard our interests," Oban told reporters.

Philippine defence and military officials reportedly called off a trip to Pag-asa using a C-130 cargo plane because of the dangerous condition of the runway.

The 120,000-strong military, one of Asia's weakest, has long faced funding shortfalls.

In recent years, it has focused on combating decades-long communist and Muslim insurgencies instead of external defence. "We have not given this enough attention," Oban said, adding President Benigno Aquino III's administration has seen the need to now bolster military presence in Palawan near the contested region.

Two Chinese patrol boats allegedly harassed a Philippine oil exploration ship into leaving a vast area called the Reed Bank on March 2, prompting a Filipino general to deploy two military aircraft, which arrived at the scene after the Chinese vessels had left, the military said.

The Philippines protested, saying the Reed Bank, which is near the Spratlys, lies within Philippine territorial waters. China responded by saying that the Spratlys and adjacent waters belong to it.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told an Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional security forum in Vietnam last year that the peaceful resolution of disputes over the Spratly and Paracel island groups was in the American national interest. Her remarks angered Beijing, which accused Washington of interfering in an Asian regional issue.

Washington worries the disputes could hamper access to one of the world's busiest commercial sea lanes.
