She can consider herself lucky because had she been conceived in these times, her mother would have had an abortion. Chinese doctors have found 26 sewing needles inside the body of Luo Cuifen, a 31-year-old woman.

They suspect they were inserted into the woman's body when she was a newborn by her grandparents because they were upset she was not a boy. Some of the needles entered the vital organs, such as the lungs, liver and kidneys and one even in the woman's brain was broken into three
parts.

The sinister discovery was made only when Luo went to hospital because of blood presence in her urine. A routine X-ray revealed the horrific truth. Till this age, the woman was in good health.

A team made of 23 doctors, including five specialists from the United States and Canada, are making a plan for removing in the most efficient way the needles at the Richland International Hospital in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province (southern China).
"Removing the needles would be a long, complicated procedure requiring several operations." Xu Mei, the chief doctor at the hospital, told the BBC.

The first surgery will occur next week and the woman will get rid of seven needles. This first procedure is evaluated at 170,000 yuan ($22,500), but it will be made for free.

Luo, from rural Songming County, will have to raise by herself funds for the other surgeries.

According to the Chinese tradition only a son can do the funerary rites for his parents and ancestors.

About 70 million more boys than girls are born in China.

In some provinces of southern China, there is a sex ratio at birth of 130 - 135 boys for every 100 girls (!) (these are absolute world records; the normal sex ratio is 103: 100).

Attraction is more than looks: it combines smell, hearing (voice) and the visual clues. Some are at the subconscious level, driving us towards a person without being able to explain it clearly. Biology dominates us. Even before being born, it is already determined how attractive we will be.

1.Symmetry. Even at the stage of fecundated egg, the human body starts developing from dividing cells. If each division went perfectly, we all would be perfectly symmetrical, the left and right sides being mirror images. But this never happens, due to environmental disturbances, as the organism does not live in a constant environment (food, temperature, humidity, predators and so on) and this slightly alters the division.

That's why any human and animal presents a certain degree of asymmetry between the right and the left side. Smaller symmetry means an individual has powerful genes enabling him to stand bad conditions and survive better,
being more healthy and fertile.

"It makes sense to use symmetry variation in mate choice. If you choose a perfectly symmetrical partner and reproduce with them, your offspring will have a better chance of being symmetric and able to deal with perturbations." said evolutionary biologist Randy Thornhill of the University of New Mexico.

His symmetry researches on people revealed that both men and women rated more symmetrical members of the opposite sex as more attractive and healthier than their less symmetrical individuals.

All these differences are normally low, of a few percent (there is pathology, a disease causing too much asymmetry) but the brain perceives this, even if not consciously.

Men with higher symmetry also enjoy more sexual partners than men with higher asymmetry.

"Women's sex-partner numbers are dependent on things other than attractiveness," Thornhill told LiveScience.
"Because of the way that the sexual system in humans works, women are choosy. They are being sexually competed for. They have to be wooed and all that."

2. Body shape. Psychologist Devendra Singh of the University of Texas investigated people's waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) relationship with sexual attractiveness and found that women with a WHR of 0.7 (a waist much narrower than the hips) are most desirable to men. An analysis of Playboy models and Miss America contestants found that the majority were situated around a WHR of 0.7 or lower.

"In general, a range of 0.67 to 1.18 in females is attractive to men, while a 0.8 to 1.0 WHR in men is attractive to women, although having broad shoulders is more of a turn-on." said Singh.

WHR encodes a crucial fat clue: if the individual possesses enough energy to care for offspring.

The way fat is stored on the body is controlled by sex hormones. The proper levels of estrogen in women will produce the right WHR ratio and testosterone does the same in men.

People with the right WHO, no matter their weight, are less vulnerable to conditions like cardiovascular disorders, cancer and diabetes, and are more fertile, as revealed by many researches.

"The idea is that beauty is conveying information about health and fertility, and we admire that," said Singh.

3. The face is the first factor that tells the gender. And the person's fertility degree.

"Estrogen caps bone growth in a woman's lower face and chin, making them relatively small and short, as well as the brow, allowing for her eyes to appear prominent," Thornhill explained.

Testosterone carves masculine faces, with a bigger lower face and jaw and a prominent brow.

"Men and women possessing these traits are seen as attractive, because they advertise reproductive health." said Thornhill.

1. Fish is promoted as healthier than beef and pork, because it is rich in phosphorus, vitamin D and healthy unsaturated fats. But fish sticks contain very small amounts of fish and mainly additives, by far not very healthy. Fresh fish, yes, but processed fish products or fast food deep-fried fish...

2. Yogurt is just fermented milk, and just like milk, it should be rich in protein, calcium and vitamins and an alternative for adults with lactose intolerance, who cannot eat fresh milk. But what is called yogurt in supermarkets is a partially dairy product full of industrial sugars, like fructose and glucose (who makes you fat), and all types of gums for texture (some of which can break down to dioxins, carcinogen chemicals) and processed fruit (loaded with sugars).

3. Boil some vegetables and meat (or just bones), add some spices and there is a healthy, cheap, nice soup. What you eat from an envelope or can is just a salty mix of fats, additives and some pieces of carrot or parsley to fool the people. Just one dish contains over 50 % of the salt content recommended per day.

4. Green tea is popular in Southern and Eastern Asia, it contains antioxidants and caffeine, and researches showed that this is the oriental secret against cancer, heart disease, skin diseases and senility. But as its original bitter taste is not well appreciated in the West, what people drink is an unhealthy load of sugars and additives. This is no more an Oriental drug.

5. Nice Russet types of potatoes, with thin skin

But packaged white bread should stand longer and this is achieved through additives and a changed composition, with sugars from corn syrup, which makes it an "enhanced" fattener. Not to mention that preservatives sometimes give it a limestone taste...

8. Cereals (wheat, barley, rice, oats and corn) have formed the base of alimentation for most people for over 10,000 years. They are rich in protein, starch and vitamins.

But what we call today breakfast cereals is based on real cereal, but with a high addition of sugar, corn syrup, colorants and preservatives that won't keep you and your children healthy.

9. Vegetables and fruit are healthy. That's true. But "five-a-day" pre-packed salads will not bring all the vitamins necessary per day. This is just advertising!
Pre-packaged salad has been cut up so the vitamin content is reduced or non-existent. It is washed in a chlorine solution and prepared in a way that means it doesn't appear to deteriorate even though it may be up to a month old.

10. Ecological food means there are no contaminants (pesticides and fertilizers) used for growing it. But what reaches the supermarkets has to be cheap and the organic milk comes from caged cows force-fed organic grain, but grazing on a calm mountain pasture (do you really believe the advertising?). Organic junk food is masked as healthy by the organic label.

11. Today, pizza is an icon of the junk food. For a good reason. While in Italy it is made only from certain types of flour, tomato, mozzarella, olive oil, basil and oregano, and thus a healthy Mediterranean meal resulting, what is marketed around the world hardly mimics that.

The mass is filled by odd-flavor preservatives, cheap fats and cheeses (very few have eaten a mozzarella made pizza) and...who the hell invented ketchup, a colored something, filled with sugars (glucose, dextrose or fructose) with a petroleum taste? Or the cheap salami and sausages added, made mainly from industrial soy protein, and little meat remaining?

For women, kissing seems to be a tool for appreciating the man as a potential partner and later to further advance into intimacy and to assess the status of a relationship, while for men, kissing is a minor issue and they perceive it as a woman's 'surrendering' act, signaling a higher likelihood of sex.

Based on the answers offered by the subjects, the researchers found that men were less discriminating when they had to choose whom to kiss or whom to have sex with. Men appeared much eager to have sex with someone without kissing, to have sex with a stranger they are not attracted to and their decision to have sex with someone is not influenced by the "mark" they give on the "kissing abilities" of the partner (a bad kissing partner did not stop them).

To regard the man as a possible long-term relationship partner, women had to offer a high "mark" and they signaled kissing as an important factor throughout a relationship. Instead, men's interest on kissing lowered as the relationship progressed.

The two genders also have different tastes as far as kisses are concerned: men prefer wet, tongue kisses.

"Kissing had developed over time to become an essential part of the courtship process. While both sexes participate in the adaptive benefits of kissing, we found sex differences when considering the pursuit of short-versus long-term mating strategies." said lead researcher Dr Gordon Gallup.
