WASHINGTON - Janet Jackson has returned to the stage in Washington, D.C., after an illness forced her to cancel a string of shows on her "Rock Witchu" tour.

Fireworks exploded at the outset of her show at the Verizon Center, and Jackson emerged from the smoke.

Jackson's publicist said Wednesday she has been suffering from migraine-associated vertigo, which led to two weeks of scrapped shows. She is being treated for the illness, which is characterized by dizziness, imbalance and other symptoms.

Manager Kenneth Crear says in a statement that Jackson is feeling better and ready to continue her first North American tour in seven years. Upcoming stops include Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, New York and East Rutherford, N.J. - AP

MANILA, Philippines â€" Filipinos working abroad need not worry about massive layoffs because of the current global financial crisis, Labor Scretary Marianito Roque said on Thursday.

"As a matter of fact, Filipinos are now getting new high-paying, high-value jobs," Roque said, according to an article posed on the government's official website.

Employment prospects abroad remain stable. In factr, the government has even signed an agreement with four provinces in Canada â€" Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan â€" for deployment of Filipinos.

The pay in those places are higher than what Filipinos elsewhere are getting, Roque said.

According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Australia, New Zealand, Norway, and France would also need services of Filipinos â€" particularly nurses, information technology workers, truck drivers, hotel personnel, and heavy equipment operators.

A Luzon regional officer of Philippines Overseas Employment Agency (POEA), Romeo Jaramilla, made the same assurance to workers, stressing that situation remains normal. The overseas Filipinos workers (OFWs) who have gone home, he said, are "just on vacation."

"Actually, we haven't received any reports or indications of any possible layoffs because of this global financial problem and more applicants have come to apply because more employment opportunities are seen especially in the Middle East," Jaramilla said in a speech with some residents of San Fernando in La Union.

In fact, overseas workers have been going to the POEA office to get their exit clearances, which they need in going back to the countries where they are deployed. Most of them are part of the "Balik Manggagawa" program.

Based on the data given by POEA Regional Center Luzon, the agency’s Balik Manggagawa program has a total of 1,329 OFWs who came home for vacation in July and are now able to return to their countries of deployment.

The study added that there were 1,266 workers who did the same in August; and 900 in the month of September.

Engineer Edwin Rivera, La Union Field Officer of DOLE, for his part, added that this coming November, the agency is planning to conduct a job fair region-wide, which will cater to both local and overseas job seekers.

MANILA, Philippines - Saudi and Philippine recruitment authorities agreed Wednesday to move for an indefinite suspension of “unified contract," a proposed system of hiring Filipino workers bound for the oil-rich kingdom.

According to Mr. Ed Mahiya, president of the Overseas Placement Association of the Philippines (OPAP) and Federated Association of Manpower Exporters (FAME), the overseas employment industry is thankful to the Department of Foreign Affairs, which linked up with Saudi authorities on this matter.

Mahiya said the unified contract would mean working visas would pass through a Saudi recruitment office, which may encourage the entry of brokers in the hiring process.

Industry leader Lito Soriano said many industry practitioners believe that the unified contract would hike placement fees in the same way that such kind of rules increased placement fees in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and others.

Soriano said that placement fees may increase by P50,000 to P200,000 as the new rules will add a layer in the recruitment system. He added that from 2002 to 2003 this system was proposed but was blocked by the industry.

He said the traditional system of hiring that involves the employer, the Philippine recruitment agency and the worker has allowed many companies like Ipams and Omanfil to reap awards because they consistently deploy workers without placement fees.

It also resulted in hundreds of thousands of Filipinos working in the last 30 years in Saudi Arabia without the burden of placement fees, he pointed out.

San Miguel Corp.’s “Oktoberfest” began a month early in Manila, but Pinoys proved that it was well worth it, breaking 2 Guinness world records.

Filipino beer lovers trooped to Ortigas Friday night where free beer were offered as 200 bars were set up from San Miguel Avenue to St. Francis in Mandaluyong City.

They beat two records. The first one, the longest beer bar in the world, measuring at around 600 meters, 360 meters longer than Guinness record-holder Taiwan.

The second one, the most number of people simultaneously toasting for a beer event, about 15,000 people, beating the previous record of 13,000.

Aside from free beers, thousands of Friday’s “beer troopers” were also treated to a free concert where at least 40 rock bands play. The main feature alternative rock band Third Eye Blind.

“Sobrang espesyal ng gabing ito dahil lahat ng magkakaibigan magkakasama ngayon dito para magsaya dahil sasali tayo sa Guinness World record at may tampok pa na foreign band,” said Assie Carpio, San Miguel Corp. Brand Manager.

Siargao local Edito “Piso” Alcala surfed his way to a victory during the recently concluded Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational. His win over defending champion Wade Goodall (Aus) is only the second time a Filipino has won the international event in Siargao, the first being back in the late 90s by Rodolfo “Osot” Alcala.

The international competition held at Cloud 9, is among the most prestigious in Asia and is watched closely by surfers around the world. It attracts high profile professional surfers from Australia, Israel, Japan, Hawaii and France among others. The Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational creates a limited number (48) of slots for invited international pro surfers plus the top 12 finishers from the Siargao National event and four wild cards. The format allows the competitors to help make decisions on when to run their heats during the seven-day window scheduled for the competition.

This year’s crop of international competitors included returning surfers David Reardon-Smith (USA), Jason Shibata (Hawaii), and Tipi Jabrik (Indonesia) as well as high profile first timers Marlon Gerber (Indonesia), Granger Larsen (Hawaii) and big wave rider Laurie Towner (Australia).

The days leading up to the finals had been less than ideal, with smaller wave swell than is usually encountered in Siargao. But on September 26, Cloud 9 turned itself on overnight to deliver those perfect right-handed barrels that have made it world famous. In an exciting 35 minute heat, Alcala chased Goodall’s scores wave for wave but continued to lag behind. In the final five minutes, it was announced that he needed a 9.0 score to move into first place. With under two minutes, Alcala paddled into a deep overhead wave, pulled into a hollow barrel and snagged a 9.43 score from the judges. Goodall tried his best to make up the defecit but couldn’t quite make the grade.

As the final buzzer sounded, hordes of surfers - both local and foreign - ran across the dry reef to greet the new champion. Hoisted upon the shoulders of his friends, the 20-year old sudden hero was carried to the base of the judging tower, where Billabong officials awarded him with a whopping US$7,500. Goodall took home US$4500 for his second place finish.

October 01, 2008, 06:00:02 PM

When Tubag Bohol was closed for 40 hours, I spend some time to reflect on life. I also made a slideshow in remembrance to our dear friend Aya.

A Tribute To Aya

May Aya live in our hearts forever.

Tribute to Orchids (Aya) / Re: GO WITH GOD, LANGGA
September 26, 2008, 04:53:21 AM

Lord our God, the death of Aya recalls our human condition and the brevity of our lives
on earth. But for those who believe in Your love, death is not the end, nor does it destroy
the bonds that You forge in our lives. We share the faith of Your Son's disciples and the
hope of the children of God. Bring the light of Christ's resurrection to this time of testing and
pain as we pray for Aya and for those who love her, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

May these poem bring comfort and solace to these difficult times....

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a 1,000 winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sun on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled light
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there; I did not die.

Hearing the news at 3am is more than shocking.

Rest in Peace, Aya. I love you and I will never forget you.

#2298

I don't think she is unaware of it. Kung nahitabo na, hangal na jud siya. Didto pa sa iya hand carry. Impossible! IMO
