Just last week, Francis asked hundreds of papal representatives who are posted across the globe to "carry Christ to the world" and to detach themselves from the "bourgeoisie spirit and life."

"There is always the danger, even for the men of the Church, to surrender to â€" the spirit of the world, which leads to action for self-fulfillment and not for the glory of God, in that sort of 'bourgeoisie spirit and life' which leads people to settle and seek a peaceful and comfortable life," Pope Francis said.

"These are strong but true words: giving in to worldly spirit exposes us pastors to ridicule, perhaps we may be applauded by some, but those same people who seem to approve of us, then criticize us behind our backs."

Pope Francis, who was previously the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in Argentina, has led a ministry dedicated to living simply and helping the poor. While archbishop, he resisted many of the privileges afforded to him, such as taking the bus to work instead of being driven around, and he has continued in the same spirit while leader of the Roman Catholic Church, choosing not live in the lavish papal residency.

The first Latin American pope in modern history was apparently working on new appointments for the Vatican's central administration and the many issues they have to deal with while the concert was taking place on Saturday.

A photo of the empty white papal armchair apparently made the rounds in Italian newspapers. The RAI National Symphony Orchestra concert, directed by conductor Juraj Valcuha of Slovakia, took place on Saturday and was attended by a crowd of cardinals and Italian dignitaries. An archbishop was forced to announce to the crowd, however, that Pope Francis had an "urgent commitment that cannot be postponed" and thus would not attend.

The cardinals were assured that health was not the reason for the pontiff's decision not to attend, and Reuters noted that they realized that the message was that the church is in crisis, and that they had too much work to do to take time off to attend social events.

"In Argentina, they probably knew not to arrange social events like concerts for him because he probably wouldn't go," the Vatican source added.

An empty papal throne is pictured as Archbishop Rino Fisichella (R) reads a message from Pope Francis before a RAI National Symphony Orchestra concert, directed by conductor Juraj Valcuha of Slovakia, in Paul VI hall at the Vatican June 22, 2013.

Pope Francis recently surprised some in the Vatican by failing to show up for a concert where he was expected to be the guest of honor. Some believe the move is another message that the pontiff will not indulge in lavish events.

"It took us by surprise," an anonymous Vatican source said on Monday, according to Reuters. "We are still in a period of growing pains. He is still learning how to be pope and we are still learning how he wants to do it."

But among the public, views are complex. Some sincerely see the other side as wrong â€" whether on matters of faith or politics. Others see the divisions as purely political, created for cynical aims. Even some who view the other sect negatively fear sectarian flames are burning dangerously out of control. There are those who wish for a return to the days, only a decade or two ago, when the differences did not seem so important and the sects got along better, even intermarried.

And some are simply frustrated that there is so much turmoil over a dispute that dates back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century.

"Fourteen centuries after the death of the prophet, in a region full of destruction, killing, occupation, ignorance and disease, you are telling me about Sunnis and Shiites?" scoffs Ismail al-Hamami, a 67-year-old Sunni Palestinian refugee in Gaza. "We are all Muslims. ... You can't ignore the fact that (Shiites) are Muslims."

CAIRO (AP) â€" It's not hard to find stereotypes, caricatures and outright bigotry when talk in the Middle East turns to the tensions between Islam's two main sects.

Shiites are described as devious, power-hungry corruptors of Islam. Sunnis are called extremist, intolerant oppressors.

Hatreds between the two are now more virulent than ever in the Arab world because of Syria's civil war. On Sunday, officials said four Shiites in a village west of Cairo were beaten to death by Sunnis in a sectarian clash unusual for Egypt.

Hard-line clerics and politicians on both sides in the region have added fuel, depicting the fight as essentially a war of survival for their sect.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Geraldino earned her education degree from St. Paul’s University where she majored in math and minored in English.

She taught high school in a Catholic university in Manila for eight years, before moving on to teach in college in the same school. She also served as the school’s Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The teacher who is affectionately called “Miss G” in school attributed her passion for teaching to her father and her grade school math teacher.

“My father taught me things when I was a young child, math especially, in an interesting way. I looked up to him,” Geraldino said in a profile posted on her school’s website.

“I wanted to be like himâ€"he’s not a teacher, but I wanted to be like him,” she added.

It was when she also made her elementary math teacher her role model that she realized that she wanted to be a teacher, Geraldino said.

“My teachers would always say ‘Oh, you love to talk. Maybe that’s where your passion is.’ From there it just developed. I love teaching,” she noted.

The New York City Department of Education in its website lauded Geraldino for her ability to simplify mathematical concepts for students.

“[She] is able to deconstruct the most complex mathematical concepts and make them palpable to even the most resistant students,” the website quoted Geraldino’s principal as saying.

Geraldino was also praised for having “constantly searched for ways to grow as an educator and seeks out professional development opportunities to improve her practice.”

“Great teachers are a school's most valuable asset. We must recognize their skills and the impact they have on our students” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg honored the Geraldino and 10 others awardees at a ceremony at Gracie Mansion where they were given $3,500 each and a Big Apple trophy.

The Filipina, who spent nine of her 24 years as a teacher in New York City, was chosen from more than 2,000 nominations by students, teachers, schools and families.

The crash is the latest in a string of deadly accidents involving surplus and often old foreign aircraft acquired by the Philippine military.

The air force's fleet of 30 Broncos were acquired from the United States in 1991 and Thailand in 2004.

Developed in the 1960s as a counter-insurgency aircraft by the US Air Force, the Broncos can carry heavy ammunition for a few hours in the air.

They are used primarily for close air support missions against Muslim and communist insurgents, mainly on the southern island of Mindanao, Okol said.

However, they are also used to monitor the archipelago's extensive coastal areas, as well as for search and rescue missions in the disaster-prone Philippines, he added.

Okol would not say exactly how old the crashed plane was, but insisted that all of the Broncos were in good condition.

"They have received a good number of upgrades, and we maintain them very well," he said.

The Philippine military is among the most poorly equipped in the region, and past modernisation efforts have consisted mostly of surplus hardware acquired from its traditional ally, the United States.

In May, two pilots were killed when an air force trainer plane crashed north of Manila

In 2010, eight air force personnel and a civilian were killed when a light cargo airplane crashed in the southern city of Cotabato.

AFP News - This file photo shows a Philippine Air Force gunner manning a machine gun as a helicopter flies over an area in restive southern Philippines, in 2008. A new video has emerged of an Australian kidnapped by suspected Muslim extremists in the Philippines, with the foreign office on Monday saying it proved he was still alive in late March.

The Philippine Air Force said Monday two pilots were missing after their twin-engine propellor plane went down at sea during a night flying mission.

The OV-10 Bronco, used largely as a maritime patrol support aircraft, failed to return to an air strip on the western island of Palawan Sunday night, air force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Okol told AFP.

"Combined elements of the coastguard and the navy have found parts of the debris and it appears to be the rear cargo compartment of the vessel," Okol said.

"We are still holding out hope that the two pilots were able to eject... we are searching for them."

Okol said the pilots had radioed the control tower that they were five nautical miles off the airfield and preparing to land before they crashed.

"At this point, we could not yet speculate as to what exactly happened," he said, adding the weather was clear.

Studies show that most people who win the lottery eventually lose all of that money and are right back where they started ... or worse. Local psychiatrist Harry Croft, M.D., says it's because lottery winners often try to emulate the lifestyles of the rich and famous ... when they're not mentally prepared to do so.

"The assumption is that if we just have the money and the things that money brings, then that will make us a different person," he says.

But it doesn't and Croft says most people aren't equipped, far less taught, how to handle millions and millions of dollars.

"If I win the lottery, all of my problems will be taken care of, I can live the good life and buy all that I wanted, that is the dream."

But that dream often turns into family and friends wanting hand outs, blowing the loot on too many luxuries with little thought for the future.

He says the most successful winners are the ones who stick with the old routine while taking a yearly payment ... not quitting everything and taking the lump sum amount.

"If a person is grounded before they win the lottery, then they are more likely to do satifactorily," he says.

You will additionally notice that although internet sex definitely has sensory limitations, studies show that the level of intimacy present in social sexual situations can be developed much faster on the internet thanks to the absence of social cues and the possibility that a goal of a sexual encounter was made previously clear. The issue of trust is additionally easier to get past online because of being able to remain as anonymous as one chooses to be. Experimenting with sexuality online is also popular because people have no fear of being “unsafe.” Users are able to experiment sexually by whatever means they please and do so without physically engaging in sexual behavior.

Years ago the thought of developing a personal relationship with someone over the computer was unheard of; today that is not the case. Online dating is a very popular phenomenon that many people across the world are taking part in.  The internet gives people a place to meet others without some of the awkwardness and uncertainty that is present in social situations and that is very appealing to a lot of people. Online dating is here to stay and will only continue to grow.

The appeal and proliferation of internet relationships is also having an effect on existing face-to-face relationships.  By their nature, internet relationships are relatively easy to conceal from a spouse or significant other.  Virtually any type of relationship could be found online as well, whether that person is looking for a deep emotional connection or a discrete intimate affair, there are people online who will participate in anything.  Research has shown that internet affairs affect existing relationships as much as traditional affairs do.   Like they do with regular affairs, people who meet on the internet neglect their responsibilities and relationships and they also ignore problems in their existing relationships, while focusing their energy on their online affair (Cooper, McLaughlin, and Campbell 2000).

Experimenting with sexuality on the internet is also becoming more and more popular. The internet provides users with a place where they can explore their sexuality in ways they might have previously only imagined and remain anonymous while doing so. It also provides users with a vast market place for finding partners with similar sexual fantasies.  As well as allowing people to be able to play the role of whomever or whatever they chose to be and change their virtual self whenever they please.  You will see in our tutorial that some researchers believe that exploring one’s sexuality on the internet can actually be a good thing for certain individuals, but can also lead to negative outcomes. You will additionally notice that although internet sex definitely has sensory limitations, studies show that the level of intimacy present in social sexual situations can be developed much faster on the internet.

Internet relationships form for a multitude of reasons.  The anonymity of the internet allows people to connect across all demographics to people who fulfill their emotional needs.  Often these relationships take the form of extra-marital affairs but much of the time they occur between single people who share common interests.  Given the large pool of people on the internet, there are good odds that someone with unique interests will meet a like-minded person.   People often enjoy a high level of self-disclosure particularly in areas of sexual preference and interest.  Underwood and Findlay (2004) found that people are able to disclose more of themselves in their internet relationships than in their “real world” ones.   Perhaps the most appealing feature of internet dating is that people can express their “true selves” more openly and find a person that is accepting of them.  According to McKenna, Green and Gleason (2002), the “true self” is the honest part of a person that is not freely and openly expressed in real world communication.  Relationships that form as a result of “true self” virtues often become far more pleasurable than typical real world ones.  In fact, it isn’t unheard of for people to travel across the country to meet with a person that they connected with while online.

The Psychology of Internet Dating
http://webspace.ship.edu/
Megan Pace, April Reid, Jonathan Santarelli

Internet dating is truly a 21st century phenomena.  Many people today spend a great deal of their time on the internet in hope to make a special connection with someone. From meeting in chat rooms to posting a self profile on a dating website, this is a fad that is becoming more and more popular every year and will continue to grow as the internet grows.  The purpose of our tutorial will be to survey online dating and inform the viewer of the psychological dynamics that it presents.

Internet dating is becoming more popular as it allows people to present themselves to the world in hopes of finding a potential mate.  The process of going through online dating allows a person to explore their self, so that when they present themselves it is their true self that people see.  The concept of being anonymous allows people to explore who they are without fear of being judged and letting them do things they would not normally do in face-to-face situations.  Once people have figured out their true identity, they work on presenting themselves to the world as truthfully as possible.  However, there are some down sides to internet dating sites.  When thinking of dating sites, we often associate some level of deception along with it.  And for the most part that is true.  People intentionally deceive others in order to sound more appealing and gain more views and potential dates.  But not everyone is misrepresenting themselves on purpose.

Furthering conservation

In 2011, Monfort was honored as one of the “Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Conservation Heroes.”

The award is bestowed to “extraordinary individuals who are passionate about protecting animals and habitats in areas of critical concern.”

Winning the award, Momfort said, means helping further the cause of bat conservation in the country and elsewhere.

In a letter to friends, she wrote: “That I have been given this recognition is simply signaling more work lies ahead for me using this ‘tool’ and putting it into good use… There is so much to be accomplished that I plan to leave behind for the children of the world.” â€" TJD, GMA News

World record holder

In 2010, the Guinness Book of World Records officially declared the cave to contain the world's biggest colony of fruit bats, estimated at around 1.8 million.

Early the following year, an American cave-mapping expedition stumbled upon an unusually high number of pregnant bats in the Monfort bat colony. The species does not usually give birth in the first month of the year, making the discovery a “big surprise” and forcing the scientists to halt their mapping project, Monfort reports.

The cause of the bat baby boom is still unknown.

However, Monfort suspects one factor may be that the cave is protected from humans as an ecotourism site, which allows their numbers to grow.

Today, an estimated 2.4 million bats taking refuge at the cave.

But due to agrarian reform laws, which limit individual ownership of agricultural land, she faces losing the bats' nesting grounds.

And so she raised her own funds to bring scientists from Bat Conservation International (BCI) over to her cave to advise her on the best way to ensure the continued protection of her beloved bats.

Together with BCI and six other government and non-governmental organizations, Monfort signed an agreement protecting the cave as the Monfort Bat Conservation Park in 2006.

Within six months, Monfort also created Philippines Bat Conservation, an environmental group that reaches beyond her colony to promote conservation of all Philippine bat species.

A life with bats

The fruit bats have been a part of Monfort's life for as long as she could remember.

She was barely a toddler when her family would seek shelter inside the cave during the Second World War.

Japanese war planes would circle around Samal Island before bombing the adjacent Davao.

“Together with some of our neighbors, we would run to the backyard cave,” she recalls.

Growing up with bats in her backyard made her love and care for these creatures.

Fortunately, she was able to do so after she inherited the land from her parents.

There are more than 1,100 bat species in the world, but the Philippines is home to 26 indigenous bat speciesâ€"more than any other country.

But sadly, most of these bats are threatened.

“The threat to bats in the Philippines is quite serious considering that very little literatures and researches have been published about them,” says Monfort.

“In addition, bats are still misunderstood until now.

In fact, only very few Filipinos are aware about the importance of bats to the environment and to our economy.

Because of this, it is much easier for people to hunt bats down because they feel bats are dispensable.”

The bats that inhabit Monfort’s place are called Geoffroy’s rousette fruit bats, known scientifically as Rousettus amplexicaudatus.

'Angels of the night'

Monfort, who is the founder and president of the Monfort Bat Cave and Conservation Foundation, considers bats are the front-line warriors against climate change. “They are pollinators,” she points out.

“They maintain so many species of plants, trees and fruits that are habitats for other important species.

If we lose them completely, we stand a great chance to never again enjoy the wonderful fruits and plants we have today.”

“Angels of the night” is what she calls these gentle nocturnal creatures.

“They are angels because the service they do for humanity and the environment is invaluable,” she explains.

“They have always been the major agents of reforestation.”

Samal's little angels: A woman's mission to save Philippine bats
GMA News Online â€" Fri, Jun 21, 2013

The Island-City of Samal in the southern Philippines has about seventy caves, which used to be teeming with bats.

But now, most of these caves are empty and silent.

In some parts of the island, bats are hunted for food by peopleâ€"particularly for "pulutan."

They are also sometimes killed out of superstitious fear.

Their natural homes are disturbed because of guano mining and swiftlet nest collection.

Bats are also threatened by natural predators like snakes, and calamities like earthquakes and forest fires.

But thanks to the efforts of nature conservationist Norma Monfort, there's a haven for Samals' bats: a 280-meter-long cave tucked away from public incursion.

Pakistan has very close ties with neighboring China and is very sensitive to an issue that could harm the relationship. Pakistani officials have reached out to representatives from China and Ukraine to convey their sympathies, the Foreign Ministry said.

Many foreign tourists stay away from Pakistan because of the perceived danger of visiting a country that is home to a large number of Islamic militant groups, such as the Taliban and al-Qaida, which mostly reside in the northwest near the Afghan border. But a relatively small number of intrepid foreigners visit Gilgit-Baltistan during the summer to marvel at the peaks of the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, including K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

Syed Mehdi Shah, the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, condemned the attack and expressed fear that it would seriously damage the region's tourism industry.

"A lot of tourists come to this area in the summer, and our local people work to earn money from these people," said Shah. "This will not only affect our area, but will adversely affect all of Pakistan."

Shah said authorities are still trying to get more information about exactly what happened to the tourists. The area where the attack occurred, Bunar Nala, is only accessible by foot or on horseback, and communications can be difficult, said Shah. Bunar Nala is on one of three routes to reach Nanga Parbat, he said.

The attackers beat up the Pakistanis who were accompanying the tourists, took their money and tied them up, said a senior local government official. They checked the identities of the Pakistanis and shot to death one of them, possibly because he was a minority Shiite Muslim, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. Although Gilgit-Baltistan is a relatively peaceful area, it has experienced attacks by radical Sunni Muslims on Shiites in recent years.

The attackers took the money and passports from the foreigners and then gunned them down, said the official. It's unclear how the Chinese tourist who was rescued managed to avoid being killed.

Local police chief Barkat Ali said they first learned of the attack when one of the local guides called the police station around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

The Pakistani government condemned the shooting in a statement sent to reporters.

"The government of Pakistan expresses its deep sense of shock and grief on this brutal act of terrorism, and extends its sympathy to the families of the victims," said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry. "Those who have committed this heinous crime seem to be attempting to disrupt the growing relations of Pakistan with China and other friendly countries."

The gunmen were wearing uniforms used by the Gilgit Scouts, a paramilitary police force that patrols the area, said the interior minister. The attackers abducted two local guides to find their way to the remote base camp. One of the guides was killed in the shooting, and the other has been detained and is being questioned, said Khan.

"The government will take all measures to ensure the safety of foreign tourists," said the interior minister in a speech in the National Assembly, which passed a resolution condemning the incident.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack, saying their Jundul Hafsa group carried out the shooting as retaliation for the death of the Taliban's deputy leader, Waliur Rehman, in a U.S. drone attack on May 29.

"By killing foreigners, we wanted to give a message to the world to play their role in bringing an end to the drone attacks," Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location.

ISLAMABAD â€" Islamic militants wearing police uniforms shot to death nine foreign tourists and one Pakistani before dawn Sunday as they were visiting one of the world's highest mountains in a remote area of northern Pakistan, officials said.

The foreigners who were killed included five Ukrainians, three Chinese and one Russian, said Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. One Chinese tourist was wounded in the attack and was rescued, he said.

The local branch of the Taliban took responsibility for the killings, saying it was to avenge the death of a leader killed in a drone strike.

The shooting is likely to damage the country's struggling tourism industry. Pakistan's mountainous north â€" considered until now relatively safe â€" is one of the main attractions in a country beset with insurgency and other political instability.

The attack took place at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world at 8,126 meters (26,660 feet). Nanga Parbat is notoriously difficult to climb and is known as the "killer mountain" because of numerous mountaineering deaths in the past. It's unclear if the tourists were planning to climb the mountain or were just visiting the base camp, which is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.
