Quotations by Jeanne Calmert

Calment was as alert as a hummingbird and showed no signs of senile dementia.  She was well known and liked for her tart wit.  Some of her famous quotations:

I've waited 110 years to be famous, I count on taking advantage of it. - Jeanne Calmert during her 120th birthday party

A very short one. - also on her 120th  birthday, when asked what kind of  future did she expect

Calment’s Secret of Longevity

Jeanne Calment came from a bourgeois family and never had to work.  Her husband, a cousin, was a prosperous storeowner who offered her a life of ease revolving around tennis, bicycling, swimming, roller skating, piano and opera.

In later years, Calment lived mostly off the income from her apartment, which she sold cheaply to a lawyer when she was 90.  Andre-Francois Raffray, who apparently relied on the actuarial table, signed a contingency contract  with Calment and agreed to pay a life annuity of 2,500 francs ($500) a month under a deal to make him the owner of Calment's flat when she dies.  Yet, he died at 77 and his family was still paying for more than a year until she died.  Altogether, they paid more than 900,000 francs ($180,000), three times the value of the house.

Internationally, researchers are fascinated with Calment for both her longevity and her vitality.  "She never did anything special to stay in good health," said French researcher Jean-Marie Robine. They attribute her longevity to her immunity to stress.   She once said “ If  you can’t do anything about it, don’t worry about it.”

Calment herself credited an occasional glass of Port wine and a diet rich in olive oil for her longevity. She also recommended laughter as a recipe for longevity and jokes that "God must have forgotten me." ( L'Oubliee de Dieu?).   For skin care, she recommends olive oil and a dab of make-up.  "All my life I've put olive oil on my skin and then just a puff of powder.  I could never wear mascara, I cried too often when I laughed."

She took up fencing lessons at 85 and rode bicycle until 100.   However, she used to ate two lbs. of chocolate per week until her doctor persuaded her to give up sweets at the age of 119.

She quit smoking only at 119, but her doctor said her abstinence was due to pride rather than health â€" she was too blind to light up herself, and hated asking someone to do it for her.

Madava takes out another sheet of paper and draws a circle. Then he traces three lines through it, creating six pie-like sections, which he fills with the words, "air," "water," "fruit," "vegetables," "rice/bananas," "fish/meat." He says this is all the body needs. Just a bit of each -- and no more.

Alternative Cancer Treatments and Protocols

There are many definitions to alternative cancer treatments, but let's just define them, for the sake of logical orientation, as non-traditional treatments for cancer. Richard Walters has organized them this way in his book Options: The Alternative Cancer Therapy Book.  It's a good place to start. We spend a good deal of our time evaluating the most promising components of many of the following historical programs, as well as talking with consultants possessing years of experience. Alternative cancer treatments include, but are not limited, to the following (Please note: No endorsement by Alternative Cancer Treatments is implied by being listed here):

Biological and Pharmcologic Therapies
Antineoplastons
Gaston Naessens Therapy (714X)
Revici Therapy
Hydrazine Sulfate

Immune Therapies
Immuno-Augmentative Therapy (IAT)
Issels whole-body immune therapy

Herbal Therapies
Harry Hoxsey formulas
Essiac tea
Mistletoe (Iscador)...as used by Suzanne Somers
Pau D'Arco
Chaparral

Nutritional Therapies
Wheatgrass Therapy
Macrobiotics
Moerman's Anti-Cancer diet

Metabolic Therapies
Gerson
Kelley's Nutritional-Metabolic Therapy (as modified by Nicholas Gonzalez, MD)
Hans Nieper, M.D.

Adjunctive Therapies
Oxygen Therapies (including Ozone)
Hyperthermia
DMSO therapy
Chelation
Live Cell therapy
Energy Medicine

Bioelectric Therapies
Homeopathy
Ayurveda
Chinese Medicine

Mind-Body Approaches

The most successful practitioners seem to be those who integrate various components of the alternative cancer treatments listed above, without painting themselves into a corner by being committed to a particular model.

not yet, and thanks for the tip, i will.  anything worth reading and considering, i'll study.  and ask.  if someone told us to go to siquijor, i'd go.  whatever it takes.  but we will decide only with a doctor's imprimatur.  and we have to decide in the next two weeks as we may run out of time.
#21527
Hormone Therapy:  Think Tamoxifen (Nolvadex).  Right now, this is the hormone therapy most often employed.  Physicians run tests on the cancer cells to see if they are stimulated by estrogen.  If they are, the cancer is referred to as estrogen receptor positive.  Tamoxifen works by blocking estrogen. Tamoxifen is also often employed when the cancer is estrogen receptor negative, especially in women over 50. It is not fully understood why Tamoxifen helps in some cases of estrogen receptor negative cancers.

This article is a very brief overview of traditional treatment options.  The actual decision on which therapies are right for you involve many complex factors that should be discussed with a competent health care professional.

Chemotherapy:  The most dreaded of all.  Thoughts of uncontrolled nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea come to mind for most when they think of chemotherapy.  Actually it isn’t as bad as it used to be.

Unlike radiation, chemotherapy traverses the whole body, killing rapidly dividing cells.  Besides cancer cells, other rapidly dividing cells include the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, blood cells, and hair.  Damage to these cells results in the troublesome side effects associated with chemotherapy.

The most common chemotherapeutic agents used in breast cancer are cyclophosphamide or  Cytoxan (C), methotrexate (M) 5 fluorouracil or 5FU (F), Adriamycin or doxorubicin  (A), Oncovin or vincristine (O) and Taxol (T).  Various combinations are utilized and given intials like CMF, CAF, etc. in keeping with the abbreviations mentioned previously.

Chemotherapy is usually given in cycles.  Two common cycles are the 3-week and the 4-week cycle.  In the 3-week cycle, there is a 3-week break between chemotherapy treatments.  The 4-week cycle has two weeks on and two weeks off.  These cycles can run from 12 weeks to over a year depending on many factors.
#21529
Radiation: Often the physician will recommend radiation as an adjunct after surgery.  Simply put, radiation damages cells that are rapidly dividing (like cancer).  The hope is that any local area into which cancer cells have invaded will be irradiated sufficiently to kill any malignancies.

Radiation is normally administered every weekday for about six weeks.  The procedure is almost always performed on an outpatient basis.  The actual “zapping” only lasts a few minutes.

Often, the radiation oncologist will prescribe a “booster dose” at the end of the cycle.  Sometimes this is administered by implanting radioactive beads that stay in place for about 36 hours.
#21530
Surgery:  The oldest of approaches (actually thousands of years old), surgery is often the most effective option.  There are currently three major types of surgery for breast cancer.

Lumpectomy:  Just the tumor and some surrounding tissue is removed

Total Mastectomy:  The entire breast is removed but chest muscles and axillary lymph nodes are left intact.

Modified Radical Mastectomy:  First, the breast is removed, then a portion of the axillary lymph nodes (the ones under the arm) are removed.

The type of surgery performed is usually determined by the stage of the disease.

Traditional Treatment Options for Breast Cancer

by Michael Guthrie, R.Ph.

Below is some cursory information on the traditional treatments of breast cancer.  For an extensive review of all currently available modalities in the U.S. and abroad, including non-traditional therapies, please visit my section on the Moss Reports.

After recovering as best as one can from the staggering news that one has breast cancer, it’s time to make some decisions about treatment options.  Treatment options are often determined by the staging of the cancer (in situ, invasive, lymph node involvement, metastases etc.).  But before we get too far into this, let’s emphasize an important point.  Consider getting a second opinion on both the diagnosis and the treatment.  Misdiagnosis occurs more frequently that the establishment would like to admit, and it cuts (no pun intended) both ways.  I have spoken to quite a few women who were told they had a benign growth who later developed raging cancers.

In general, you will have four major areas of options: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.  Most often, combinations are used, and the choices are driven by the stage of the disease.

there are options for treatment and it goes without saying that the final decision rests with my sister.  but we confer.  a lot.  and we both lean towards alternative treatment.  but we had to have a solid basis for such a decision.  fortunately, our niece who happens to be an ob-gyne is also open to alternatives.  she made an appointment for my sister with the

as there's a time for every purpose under heaven, we had to hold on to our wits and look around for all possible options as we try our best to dry our eyes.  prayers are priority, but so is fast medical intervention.

i am posting my personal odyssey here as i cope with my sister's malady, she for whom i'd give all i have--savings, jewelry, time, whatever, just so she'd get well.

if this thread could be of help to anyone now or in the future, then my grief shall have held one more meaning too.

first, the patient herself cries.

then an ob-gyne niece cries upon seeing the results of a series of medical tests on her aunt.  that was it; tears as a second opinion when i asked for a second diagnosis to either debunk or confirm the first findings.

my sister has been diagnosed with breast cancer and the doctor placed it at category 5.  i didn't know that there's a difference between a category and a stage.  it's a 5, and the worst that i've heard was stage 4 cancer.  i bawled.

ignorance is bliss?  anyone?

Eva Armstrong is one of the directors of Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. It is a completely volunteer-run rescue group that has saved more than 800 dogs from the kill list of high-volume pounds in the rural South.

During the group's last trip to Alabama, volunteers rescued a dachshund they named Captain Morgan because he had only one eye -- like a pirate. The night he was rescued, Captain Morgan slept at the foot of Armstrong's hotel bed. She took care of him until he was adopted by a family several months ago.

Well on May 5, Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue had a block party reunion where Captain Morgan and Armstrong were reunited. The picture of the two of them in a warm embrace, taken by photographer Hilary Benas, went viral after it was displayed on Buzzfeed. It shows Captain Morgan, who is now called Cappy by his adopted family, resting his head on Armstrong's shoulder. He has clearly not forgotten the woman who helped save him.

packing up for a trip.  stomach's bum over the thought that our 3 cats (all females, thrown out to the elements as kittens and i was at the proper place and time) who would need catsitting are all on heat.  huhuhu, bad timing.  got to warn the catsitters (puro ra ba laki) to bestow on them all their patience and to never let them out of their cages, no matter what.

Taiwan's premier Jiang Yi-huah rejected the apology of President Benigno Aquino because it referred to the shooting as "unfortunate" and "unintentional." Taiwan also rejected an earlier statement of regret by a lower-ranking official.

Taiwan has imposed sanctions on the Philippines, including recalling its envoy to Manila and freezing job permits for Philippines workers.

A State Department spokesman says the U.S. is concerned by increased tensions between two neighboring democracies and close American allies. It urges both to clarify disagreements and ensure maritime safety.

The Philippines Coast Guard said it was acting in self-defense in last Thursday's incident, because it said the fisherman's boat was about to ram the coast guard vessel. Taiwan has rejected those charges.

Taiwan and the Philippines, along with Brunei, China, Malaysia, and Vietnam all have competing claims to parts of the sea, which may be rich in oil and natural gas.

Taiwan Begins Military Drills Near Philippines

Taiwan's navy load Standard Type II surface-to-air missiles on the rear of a Kidd-class destroyer during exercises off of the southern city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, May 16, 2013.

VOA News
May 16, 2013

A diplomatic dispute between Taiwan and the Philippines intensified Thursday, as Taipei began a military exercise in the disputed waters between both countries.

The air and naval drills in the Bashi Channel come a week after the Philippines Coast Guard shot dead a 65-year-old Taiwanese fisherman, prompting outrage in Taiwan.

The family of the fisherman and Taiwanese officials have refused to meet the Philippine president's personal representative who was sent to Taiwan to apologize for the death.

"Der Mensch ist, was er ißt." klaro gyod ning "Man is what he eats."

a look-see at filipino names (free-for-all, no state interference):

The names of children in some families may follow a certain pattern, such as beginning with a certain letter of the alphabet, e.g. Diego Arnel, Diamond Amelia, Danford Arman, Dolores Allison, such that all their initials will be the same, i.e., DAZL if the middle name is Zulueta and the surname is Lim.

One group of siblings was named after countries (Arabia, Australia, Aruba, Albania) while another was named after car trademarks (Ford, Mercedes, Bentley, Maserati). Other names seemed to have been taken from popular brand names, food, fruits, and flowers: Ramcar, Cherry Pie, Apple, Peachy, Pepsi, Brandy. World Champion boxer Manny Pacquiao named his two daughters Queen Elizabeth and Princess while his wife is named Jinky. Philippine Senator Joker Arroyo (his real given name) has a brother named Jack.

i heard too nga ang mga pinoy couples didto who choose to combine some syllables of their names in naming their babies end up securing a certificate attesting that such a name is really a boy's name (or a girl's) in our culture, for the baby to be properly registered.

it looks like di gihapon madawat ang ngan nga lucifer kay wa man tingaliy embassy or consulate nato nga mo-certify that this is a combination of lucia and fernando in our culture. ;D

bwahahaha labihay napud nga apil names i-ban man gyud

duda ko nga naay considerable number nga nagproblema as adults tungod sa ilang mga ngan.  protektahan na lang sa state tingali kay di man tawon kabuot ang mga babies sa ilang ginikanan.

germany is very clear about this.  the name should be identifiable at once by gender, i.e., sandra, bettina, phillip, jurgen, etc.  (right, hof?)  the shorter the name, the better.  i heard that in some instances, it is the baptizing priest himself who's ready with a name.  neat ug way hasol.
#21582
alternative rock, punk rock and the likes?  wow.  and to think that the name struck as conservative and dated, like polka dot bikinis. ;D

i'm waiting for vice-mayor edgardo labella to be proclaimed.  hinaot.  btw, his father is a boholano from tubigon.

this labella guy was featured in reader's digest years ago for surviving the sunken mv cebu city, after a week of being adrift at sea when he was almost blinded.  said all he did was pray and that was what saved him.  a decent family, the labellas.

wa pod nako damha.  mora man god ug way kataposan ang stranglehold ni tomas osmeña sa cebu city ug ni gullas sa unang distrito nga lakip ang talisay city.

ang nakaayo aning mga tawhana kay wa ni sila maghimog dynasty pareha sa uban nga mga asawa ug mga anak nagtipun-og.  that osmeña's wife is a councilor does not a dynasty make.  usa pa man.  kang gullas wa gyoy lain.

daghan gyod hinoon ning nuances.  the political leaders there may just be playing to their constituents.  wa ta kahibawo ug si taiwan president nanawag na sa iyang phone pal nga si pnoy pagpahibawo nga sabton lang una siya nga mopaghot kay ubos pa siyag ratings karon.

ikaduha na man god ninyo ning gibuhat namo, 'pre, matod pa niya.  nahiubos baya mi nga sa 2011 ang mga taiwanese nga inyong gidakop didto ninyo gi-deport sa mainland china.  duha na tang bahag ug ikog basta mainland china nay mo-bully nato...

sige lang, 'pre wakang, tubag si pnoy.  pahinayhinaya lang pod mig apologize kay aron di sad mi tantong mauwawan.  gaatang baya ang imong tatay nga bully of a mainland china kay nagtoo nga once we agree to your terms aning hitaboa, tabla ra sa mo-admit mi nga di diay amo nang mga dapita sa dagat.  remember, 'pre, nga hasta kamo giangkon baya pod ni tatay bully...

this here is much better and more fun than that forum i got to read by chance.  their mutual threats were worse and they were quarreling over something they obviously were not very knowledgeable about.  one post went something like: "you idiot, you ignorant, [name] is not a christian because he is a catholic."  hello?  top that. ;D

good points Miss Isles but sometimes we have to put an end to something that is enough already. there is always a limit as to what one can do or say, right? so as not to create nuisance for everyone. just my thoughts ;D

you got the word, ann. ;D

Art 694 NCC. Nuisance is any act, omission, establishment, business, condition of property, or anything else which:

1) injures or endangers the health or safety of others
2) annoys or offends the senses
3) shocks, defies or disregards decency or morality
4) obstructs or interferes with the free passage of any public highway or street, or any body of water
5) hinders or impairs the use of property

of course, i'd like to believe that it's not that bad.  we're all friends here who can scratch each other now and then, some on the face, mostly on the back. ;D

you may be wondering why i know these things.  sheer desire for emotional and psychological survival compelled me to do some research four years ago.  someone threatened to harm my banana republic with those tandem riding motorcyclists.  the sad part was i had to keep it from him while i put on a brave face for the bitch who made the threat, intent on robbing her of the chance to gloat.  but the what-ifs were sheer torture.  despite the incredulity and assurances of  friends who i shared the info with, i still suffered terrible sleepless nights.  prayers helped me heal, but my parallel moves were just as helpful.  i warned some relatives and two current generals (yes, it's not only balong who has generals for friends) that if anything happened to my banana republic, they know who to pick up.  better to be safe than sorry, you know.

so, yes, balong is only joking.  we'll have to take him as he is, a possible eccentric, probable aberration, bizarre yet funny, and never a bore.

yours truly,

islander

i digress too much... yes, as to the current threats here---they may be regarded as humor even if no one is laughing now.  some of those posts have built-in disclaimers (lingaw lang, pawa sa laay, etc.).  balong knows enough that he doesn't stand a chance because he is revealed as himself, full name, addresses and all.  so he can't be serious.  all his threatening posts can be used against him.  (article 282 of the revised penal code and article 694 of the civil code may be applicable.)

two things, if he's not a filipino citizen---he can be declared an undesirable alien and deported immediately (goodbye, maribojoc), and we have an existing extradition treaty with the US.  if he happens to have a dual citizenship, then all our laws apply to him.  meanwhile, his phantom adversary, the recipient of his “threats” who seems to be enjoying his own jokes, would continue to laugh like the joker of batman because nobody was ever dragged to court for libel for calling someone “unggoy” in whatever language.

i remember the time here when there was that someone who asked for help in looking for a father she said she never knew.  like the rest, i did my best to try to help, and failed grossly.  then it dawned on me, through that seeker's answers, that she may just have been enjoying the merry goose chase she was leading.  her search may not have been real after all.  so her game died a natural death.  but  what if it were real?  then i can say that i did my best to help.  on the other hand, if that was nothing more than a sick joke, it was no longer my concern.  i lost nothing.

this reminds me of an article on online suicide and what to do if one happens to be at the other end, unwittingly taking in some stranger's lonely drama.  do all you can to divert the potential suicide's attention, get his address, his details, all the works, while you seek help from the police or wherever.  if he turned out to be merely joking, all the better for everyone then.  we might wish to wring his neck for making fools of us, but who can blame us for going on with our lives with less guilt because we erred on the side of caution?

hi, loll and ann--

like you, i have this strange feeling, too.  it swings from humor to incredulity, to irritation and disappointment.  and even fear.  i remember votives's what-ifs.  i share those, too.  i can't say my reaction is better, though.  it's just that i'd rather go on and enjoy what i've been enjoying here, regardless.

we can say that strange posts make for less boring forums.  here anything can happen, ideas and opinions can sprout faster than mushrooms after a thunderstorm, for our taking or refusing as a matter of course.
