Keep a travel folder for projects that you can accomplish while on a plane or in a taxi.

Travel and Tours / On the plane
June 09, 2007, 04:36:20 AM
If you do not have time to socialize during the flight, invest in a good pair of headphones that have “white noise.” It eliminates almost all the noise of the plane and most people will not disturb you. If that does not work, politely tell the talkative person next to you that you must complete your work before you land. Hopefully, they’ll give you the courtesy of being quiet.

How To Tips / Work Leave
June 09, 2007, 04:34:54 AM
Before leaving the office, make sure everyone knows what needs to be done while you are gone and ask your staff to sort the mail and condense it to action items while you are away.

Always carry emergency cash â€" enough for taxi, tips and some for “just in case.” You probably do not want to be wasting your time looking for an ATM in an unfamiliar city.

How To Tips / Your expenses
June 09, 2007, 04:31:38 AM
Complete your expense documentation as the expenses occur. Do not try to reconstruct your expenses later. Maintain a tally of expenses in your organizer and throw the receipts in a pocket file. As soon as you get back home immediately submit receipts/expense report.

Where did you park your car? Write down the exact location in your organizer. Isn’t it funny â€" how your car sometimes “moves” while you are gone? This can save you untold time frantically searching parking lots.

How To Tips / Think of your lunch
June 09, 2007, 04:27:51 AM
Go to lunch at 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. to save time both in the line and the time that it takes to get your food. Going to lunch at noon will conservatively cost you at least 15 minutes a day…and the tip’s the same. Think that is a good deal?

Inspiration & Hope / Thanksgiving All Year
June 08, 2007, 09:13:02 PM
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! â€"1 Chronicles 16:34

The beautiful hymn, “We Plow the Fields,” is often sung in the United States during the Thanksgiving holiday period in November. For me, it conjures images of families sharing a traditional feast during the harvest season.

But I was surprised when I heard it sung in church during the month of June, far removed from its traditional holiday context. It reminded me that giving thanks to God for His goodness and provision is to be a continuing celebration for His people.

For a special occasion of national celebration, King David wrote a song to guide his people in praising God on that day: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! . . . Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!” (1 Chronicles 16:8,10). But the song endured as part of Israel’s songbook of ongoing praise (Ps. 105:1-15).

Two centuries ago, Matthias Claudius wrote:

We thank Thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good;
The seedtime and the harvest, our life, our health, our food;
No gifts have we to offer, for all Thy love imparts
But that which Thou desirest, our humble, thankful hearts.
All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above;
Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all His love.

We have so much to be thankful for every day. God continually provides for all our needs. So let’s make Thanksgiving a year-long celebration. â€"David C. McCasland

For the Christian, Thanksgiving is not just a day but a way of life.

Inspiration & Hope / Actions Speak Louder
June 08, 2007, 09:11:45 PM
My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. â€"1 John 3:18

Irritated with a young athlete who had accomplished little yet boasted about his ability, a TV commentator said, “Don’t tell me what you’re going to doâ€"tell me what you’ve done!” Actions speak louder than words.

This principle is seen in Jesus’ life. In Matthew 9, a paralytic was brought to Him. Jesus’ response? “Your sins are forgiven.” When the religious leaders objected, He raised the question of the hour: “Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?” (v.5).

The answer is obvious. To say He had forgiven the man’s sins was simple, because it couldn’t be proven or disproven. But, to say “Arise and walk” was different. It was instantly verifiable. So, to prove His authority to forgive sins, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house” (v.6). And he did!

Jesus’ actions supported His words, and so should ours. John wrote, “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). What we say is significant to a watching world only if it’s consistent with what we do. As we tell people about Christ’s love, those words will communicate powerfully if surrounded by acts of love and kindness. Actions do speak louder! â€"Bill Crowder

I’d rather see a Christian
Than to hear one merely talk,
I’d rather see his actions
And behold his daily walk. â€"Herrell

Our works and words should say the same thing.

Inspiration & Hope / Safe Forever
June 08, 2007, 09:10:30 PM
[Jesus said,] “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” â€"John 16:33

Amy Beth was out in her neighborhood taking her dog for a walk when she saw a young man run into a nearby alley. A car followed. The young man grabbed a huge piece of wood from a dumpster and started swinging at the car. Amy Beth froze. She was caught in a gang fight.

Suddenly, the young driver of the car tried to get away by accelerating backwards. He slammed into Amy Beth. She landed on the trunk and was thrown into the street. Amazingly, she wasn’t seriously hurt.

Later, she tried to make sense of her experience and attempted to turn it around to make it seem good. She came to this conclusion: “Bad things happenâ€"tragic and horrible things. Good things happenâ€"amazing and miraculous things. And all this happens randomly to us. But it is not random to the God who cradles our aching hearts. He knows. . . . Suffering will come. But God is . . . larger than the events that seem to contradict God’s goodness.”

We will experience sickness, accidents, sorrow, and death. But we are not on our own. God is in control. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all” (Ps. 34:19). We can be confident that one day we will be safe with Him forever. â€"Anne Cetas

Inspiration & Hope / Something for the Soul
June 08, 2007, 09:09:13 PM
Your Word I have hidden in my heart. â€"Psalm 119:11

Filled to the brim with inspiring anecdotes and stories, the books in the series, Chicken Soup for the Soul, quickly became bestsellers. It’s no wonder. A title that includes “chicken soup” brings back memories of childhood, stuffed-up noses, and scratchy throatsâ€"a time when only a warm blanket and Mom’s steaming chicken and rice soup will bring about relief.

Scientific evidence now indicates that Mom was pretty smart. Chicken soup is beneficial for fighting colds. It’s also one of the foods that people describe as “comfort food.”

When it’s not my body but my heart that is aching, I long for the comfort of God’s Word: soothing words like “[Cast] all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7); assuring words that nothing can “separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).

The Bibleâ€"the world’s all-time bestsellerâ€"is filled with promises, reminders, challenges, and knowledge of God. When you’re feeling discouraged, try ladling up a big serving of God’s Word. Having a Bible within reach (or better yet, Scripture hidden in your heart) infinitely trumps a bowl of Mom’s chicken soup. It will warm your heart and begin your healing. â€"Cindy Hess Kasper

God’s Word is the healer, the comfort, the strength,
To fill your heart’s need, giving food for your soul;
Instead of exhausting all sources you find,
O taste the Lord’s goodness for making you whole. â€"Hess

If you fill your heart with God’s Word, He’ll bring spiritual health to your soul.

Inspiration & Hope / The Comeback King
June 08, 2007, 09:07:18 PM
A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. â€"John 14:19

We admire anyone who makes a comeback after failure and defeat. In 2001, Sports Illustrated magazine featured an article on the greatest comebacks of all time. Surprisingly, they selected the resurrection of Jesus as number one. It was stated this way: “Jesus Christ, 33 ad. Defies critics and stuns the Romans with His resurrection.”

How discerning! In any list of history’s comebacks, Jesus’ victory over the grave surely merits first place. Indeed, His resurrection is in a class that soars above any other comeback.

Death ultimately triumphs over life. When a person dies, there is no possibility of renewed existenceâ€"at least not in this world. But that wasn’t so with Jesus. He had promised His disciples that after being crucified by His enemies, He would come back to lifeâ€"triumphing over the grave. Matthew records this in his gospel: “Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things . . . and be killed, and be raised the third day” (16:21). And that is what happened to our Savior.

Jesus Christ’s comeback assures us that we too by faith in Him will come back when we are resurrected from the grave (John 11:25-26). â€"Vernon C Grounds

When Jesus died upon the cruel cross,
“This is the end,” thought many standing by;
But we can put our faith in what He said:
“If you believe in Me, you’ll never die.” â€"Hess

The empty tomb is the foundation of our faith.

They . . . preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heavenâ€"things which angels desire to look into. â€"1 Peter 1:12

Have you ever watched people at a tourist spot? At places like the Coliseum in Rome, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, or the Grand Canyon in Arizona, visitors strain their necks to get a better view. Some call this “rubbernecking,” which means “to observe with curiosity.”

The Bible tells us that such fascination also goes on in the heavenly places. The apostle Peter pulls back the curtain of heaven to let us see angels gazing at God’s plan of redemptionâ€"“things which angels desire to look into” (1 Peter 1:12). The Greek word translated “look into” means “to stoop and look at carefully with curiosity.”

But why are angels so fascinated by man’s salvation? The most likely explanation is that they are amazed at the astonishing way God solved the problem of sin (Eph. 3:8-12). The cross was the means by which God provided His Son as the righteous substitute to pay the penalty for sin while upholding His holy standard (Rom. 3:19-31). God now provides redemption to any human being who will repent, believe, and receive it.

Are you thankful for your salvation? The angels are! They rejoice every time a sinner repents and puts his faith in Christ (Luke 15:10). â€"Dennis Fisher

Inspiration & Hope / He Would Not Go In
June 08, 2007, 09:04:25 PM
He was angry and would not go in. â€"Luke 15:28

Some theologians divide transgressions into “sins of the flesh” and “sins of the spirit.” This means that some sins originate in our physical passions; others come from our “heart” or disposition. In the story of the prodigal son, the elder brother’s attitude gives us an example of the latter.

We’re inclined to single out the prodigal son as worse than his brother. But it’s worth noting that when the story ends, the prodigal is restored, forgiven, and full of joy, while the elder brother stands outside and refuses to go in.

The stay-at-home son is more than background filler. He makes us think about the state of our heart, for sour moods create untold misery.

Discontent, jealousy, bitterness, resentment, defensiveness, touchiness, and ingratitude are the dispositions that ruin our marriages, wither our children, alienate our friends, and embitter every lifeâ€"including our own.

It’s easy to defend our bad moods and to slide into deception and hypocrisy. But we must guard our hearts against such destructive attitudes. When they arise, we need to confess them, let them go, and experience God’s forgiveness.

Don’t let your bad attitude cause you to lose out while others enter into joy. â€"David H. Roper

When anger lingers in our heart,
It poisons all we think and do;
When faith seeks ways to show God’s love
It keeps our spirit strong and true. â€"D. De Haan

Resentment comes from looking at others; contentment comes from looking at God.

Inspiration & Hope / What's the Point?
June 08, 2007, 09:03:08 PM
Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. â€"Ecclesiastes 12:13

Scientists once thought that the vertebrate with the shortest life-span was the turquoise killifish. This small fish lives in seasonal rain pools in equatorial Africa and must complete its life cycle in 12 weeks before the pools disappear.

But researchers from James Cook University in Australia have now found that the pygmy goby has an even shorter lifespan. It lives fast and dies young. This tiny fish lives in coral reefs for an average of 56 days. Its rapid reproductive cycle is designed to help it avoid extinction.

What’s the point of a life that goes so fast and ends so quickly? It’s a question asked by one of the wisest men who ever lived. In his later years, Solomon, the third king of Israel, wandered from God. He became spiritually disoriented and lost his sense of direction and purpose. He looked at all of his accomplishments and found them worthless. Until he remembered his God (12:13-14), he forgot that we live not merely for ourselves but for the honor of the One who made us to worship and enjoy Him forever.

Significance is not found in the number of our days, but in what our eternal God says about how we have used them. â€"Mart De Haan

God gives to us the gift of time
To use as best we can,
To live each moment in His will
According to His plan. â€"Sper

Ten years in prison for receiving oral sex. That is Genarlow Wilson’s sentence.

When he was 17 years old and a high school senior, he received consensual oral sex from a 15-year-old, 10th-grade girl.

Everyone agreed, including the prosecutor and the girl herself, that she initiated the act.

It was all captured on video â€" the evidence used to convict him at trial. On the tape, police saw a 15-year-old perform oral sex on one partygoer, and after finishing with him, she turned and did the same to Wilson. Under Georgia law at the time, this was considered aggravated child molestation, a felony for teens less than three years apart to have oral sex. It carried with it a 10-year sentence, even though it was only a misdemeanor for those same teens to have sexual intercourse.

The D.A. offered Wilson â€" a football standout who was being recruited by some of nation’s top colleges, including Columbia and Brown â€" a plea deal: five years in prison and register as a sex offender. He turned it down.

The other students at the party took that deal and some of them are out of prison by now. Because Wilson thought he would be acquitted and did not want to be branded a child molester, he went to trial. The prosecutor blames Wilson for his sentence because none of the other defendants insisted on a trial; all the others “took their medicine.”

When I first heard about the case, I wasn’t too concerned. Wilson knew the risks, rolled the dice by going to trial and lost. But the more I think about his case and the more I read about his case, the more I think prosecutors have a duty to make sure they don’t take cases to trial that they can win, when the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Prosecutors have discretion, and they have to use it fairly and wisely.  So why do I write about this case now, two years into his sentence?  For two reasons:  for one, the Duke case has heightened my awareness that there can be injustice in the system, and as a prosecutor, I have an equal obligation to seek convictions as I do to make sure the convictions are fair and just and not wrongful.   I must speak out against injustice in the same way I speak out against crime and in favor of law enforcement.  The second reason I write about this now is because the Georgia legislature may be very close to righting this wrong with new legislation.  To the extent they are, I applaud their efforts.  To the extent they are not, I encourage their efforts.

After Wilson’s conviction and sentence, the legislature changed the statute realizing it was unfair. It now makes consensual oral sex between teens a misdemeanor. Too little, too late for Wilson, as the law does not apply retroactively. The legislature could change the law again, and there is presently a bipartisan bill that has been introduced to do just that.

Wilson’s attorney, B.J. Bernstein, a former prosecutor herself, is anxiously working with legislators to change the law to apply to Wilson.

The only other hope for Wilson, now 20, is for the prosecutor to set aside the sentence, and while the prosecutor didn’t return my phone calls, he told  ESPN , that “legally, it’s still possible for us to set aside his sentence and give him a new sentence to a lesser charge. But it’s up to us. He has no control over it.” The reason they haven’t, according to ESPN, is they believe Wilson is guilty under the law and there is no room for mercy.

Is the prosecutor punishing Wilson for exercising his right to a trial?

He says he offered Wilson the same five-year plea deal after the jury convicted him but before he was sentenced and Wilson again turned it down. Wilson says he turned it down because the jury acquitted him of the rape charge and only convicted him of the aggravated child molestation. Why take the same five-year deal after being acquitted of rape?

I spoke with Wilson’s attorney, who’s working around the clock for free to right an injustice.   She is frustrated because no one believes Wilson should be in prison for 10 years â€" not the prosecutors, Supreme Court, legislature, 15-year-old schoolmate, jury forewoman, or even the prison officials â€" but no one has done anything to get him out.

Her hope now lies with Senate Bill 37, which has been introduced and referred to the Judiciary Committee. Bernstein wants to see Wilson get out of jail soon, without the sex offender label, and go to college.

My hope is that the law applies to Wilson in the same way it applies to other consenting teens. If the legislature changed the law to spare other teens a harsh injustice, it should apply retroactively to Wilson.

(AFP) - In a dramatic case of microbial sleuthing, US scientists said they have discovered a new, potentially deadly strain of bacteria previously unknown to medicine.

The bacteria was found in a 43-year-old American woman who had traveled across Peru for three weeks and suffered from symptoms similar to typhoid fever or malaria. The woman has since recovered.

Named Bartonella rochalimae, the new species is a close relative of a microbe that sickened thousands of soldiers during the First World War with what became known as trench fever, spread through body lice.

It is also related to a bacteria identified 10 years ago during the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco as the cause of cat scratch disease, which infects 25,000 people a year in the United States.

It was this previous work on cat scratch disease related to AIDS that helped experts at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention isolate the new bacteria found in the female traveler.

The findings are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Two weeks after returning to the United States from her trip to Peru, the woman experienced potentially life-threatening anemia, a rash, an enlarged spleen, insomnia and a high fever that lasted for several weeks.

Her traveling companion did not fall ill.

The Peruvian Andes is home to a related bacteria, spread by sand flies, and at first this was what experts thought was causing her illness.

Further investigation indicated the culprit was a new species altogether.

The new discovery is the sixth species identified that can infect humans, said Dr. Jane Koehler, professor of infectious diseases at UCSF and senior author of the paper.

In 1987, Koehler encountered her first patient infected with Bartonella at the AIDS Clinic at San Francisco General Hospital.

"The bacteria were eating away a bone in the arm of an AIDS patient - for months," Koehler said. "They can cause extremely painful lesions and tumors of blood vessels on the skin of immunocompromised patients."

In 1997, her team discovered that the Bartonella henselae bacterium causes cat scratch disease. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes and fever after a person is scratched by a cat.

The new bacterium is treated with a different antibiotic that those used for cat scratch disease.

"When a patient has a high and persistent fever, we need to come up with the correct diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible - particularly for those with a weakened immune system, who can die from the infection," Koehler said. (breitbart.com)

I also hope that the newly elected officials of our country will do more research about the advantages and disadvantages of using English as a medium of communication especially in our schools.Yes, using English language doesn't mean that we are not patriotic. As we love our country, it is also our duty to help find a way that our country will be a better and progressive place to live and thrive.Good luck and keep up your good works.

What shall we do now? The so-called "educators" in Manila have petitioned the Supreme Court demanding that Tagalog be taught from Grade 1 to Grade 6, which is a very critical period for a pupil's brain development.

Is Tagalog the next language to be embraced by all countries during this globalization era?

Sometimes I don't eat. Tuna here is expensive. I wish Manny Pacquiao would be generous enough to ship a ton of tuna from GenSan to Thailand. I'm his fan. I love boxing very much. I punch a lot when I write news.

Before I dropped out from Holy Name University's College of Law, I had a problem: the law library was really small. So small it cannot contain all my bones and flesh. If you have been HNU's law library, you would agree with what I say. :)

Now it can be told .....

sad to know na we have discrimination bisan ug pareha ra tang filipino..makapungot jud..mao na dugay ang atong improvement kay unsaon nga manggi unay man..

isa jud sa reason na di ko gnahan mo stay sa manila kay grabe kaaju sila maka discriminate sa mga bisaya (pwera lng sa maayo)..they think that they are superior coz they are from the city..yayyyyyyyyy what a wrong thought!!
gahi bitaw ta ug dila magtagalog.so what???atleast kamao ta sa atong national language...ug isa pa normal raman tingali na kay wa gud ta kada adlaw nigamit sa language..ang dapat unta ikatinga nila kung maglisod ta ug bisaya unja fluent mo filipino..grrrrrrrrrrr

anyways gansi man ghapon sila nato kay di man sila kasabot mag bisaya..atleast kita..multi-lingual..

padayon mga BISDAK..we should not be intimidated by those people who think they better than us...

Hi Julai,

Daghan ang nasakitan sa discrimination sa Manila. Kanang pangutan-on bitaw ka like this: "Galing probinsya ka pala?" Nganong dili na lang moingon nga: "Galing Bohol ka pala?"

one guest wa na kaantos, ni-register ug ni-comment, and will contribute soon.
we have a lot of visitors everyday, and page hits could go up to 2,000 plus. visitors spend at least one hour per visit.

considering that this site is just a month-old, we will just just wait for another month or two.

we will be reaching 2,000 posts this week, hopefully. i think this is already remarkable for a "baby" website.

one more thing, our members come from many parts of the planet.  8)

one more thing, with God's help and provision, our server is capable of accommodating millions of visitors per day. yes, we are ready for big things to come.

It's okay to compare countries and people just for the sake of simple conversation.

I have hundreds of stories on the cancerous rudeness of "some" people in Manila. So different from the people in Bangkok. A friend from Negros once told me: "If you compare the people in Bangkok and with the people in Manila (it's reasonable to compare since these cities are both national capital), maulaw ka maghuna-huna sa kinaiya sa mga taga Manila." thanks yadz! i feel that this is the extension of my public service after my journalism years in our province. the blood is still there. 8)

i also set up this site for the lack of comprehensive information (interactive one) about our province, and if you want to ask from an existing website, no one cares to reply your "pangutana." in other words "walay motubag." One day nakahuna-huna ko, "Tubag pud Bohol oi!"

i did not know before how to develop a website so i took up a whirlwind course: BSBS. In my room. What is this BSBS? Bachelor of Basa-Basa.

and i remember i often wrote letters of inquiries to existing websites when i needed information. deadma.

a forum/discussion site can help anyone who is seeking a particular piece of information.
