hehe.  siaw ra pod ka.  loll. :)

too bad this guy can't hire me.  i would have been very interested to get employed.

hey, i defied my father years ago... he thought i was enrolled in bsba, he thought he had convinced me to end up working in a bank, because i can be a writer anyway even if i worked in a bank, he had said.  that must have been his knee jerk reaction to my older siblings' philosophy majors.  as siblings, we were not too concerned with professional titles (though in the end one of us carries the title of "atty.").  we all just loved abstract knowledge and the humanities, the influence of which can be credited largely to our father anyway.  entrepreneurship remains a strange planet.

blazes, i made use of my bsba basic accounting and business subjects to secretly enroll in a secretarial course and at the same time take subjects leading to an english major course.  no regrets.  i went on to aim for a masters in literature because i truly love the classics.  sure, i'm a housewife now.  but i've been through career peaks, foremost of which was being a provincial head of an office at 23 when my peers were in their 50s.  because i am an english major!

so cheer up, english majors!  your course had not joined the dinosaurs, really. ;D

trying my best to be humorous and brave nowadays.  by thursday, i will know whether my sister would need chemotherapy or not.  we're all praying she won't be needing this treatment.  why?  because she won't submit to it, she says.  and she has our full support for whatever decision she makes.  she's opting for homeopathy.  my eyes are swollen not only with all the crying i've done but also with all the readings i could muster about cancer, mainstream treatment, and homeopathy to help her make an informed decision.  lord, please guide us.

thanks for the kind words, isles. enough about me. how about you? how are you doing? ive missed your posts here. how is everything with your family?  regards to them all.

as for that thankful patient, let me share with you how thankful my sister is to her surgeon/oncologist for her very recent mastectomy---

1.  her doctor goes straight to the point, but he does it so gently and honestly, with a strong dash of sense of humor.  my sister feels that under his care her healing had already begun.

example:  we're in for the long haul, the doctor says.  in my experience, after the physical examination, ultrasound, and mammogram, this is it.  mastectomy.  if you're conscious about the aesthetics, naay daghang baligya nga soso sa sm, all sizes...

2.  he practices charity on the side.  he asked if he could have my sister's needles (the ones used for taking samples for biopsy) so he could use them for his charity patients in the public hospital.

3.  he is prayerful.  he led his surgical team of 4 doctors and 2 nurses in a prayer right before the surgery, inside the operating room.  (a bonus in that hospital-- perpetual succour in cebu city managed by the daughters of st. paul-- is that there is a big altar in the anteroom of the operating room, the last sanctum that my little daughter and i can go with my sister before her surgery.  there the male nurse who wheeled her in told us to all pray together the prayer that was framed beside the altar, in big letters.)

4.  an added boon: it turned out that my sister's doctor has roots from bohol, specifically from hingotanan, bien unido, according to one source who's also a doctor.  you're in good hands, that doctor told my sister.

it was my sister's ob-gyne doctor who recommended this surgeon/oncologist because, according to her, he is prayerful and my sister will like him.

look at you, lorenz.  you are a prayerful doctor too.

"In Argentina, they probably knew not to arrange social events like concerts for him because he probably wouldn't go," the Vatican source added.

pure speculation, like connecting the dots and believing that the puzzle had been solved.  these are not the pope's own words.  it's a nameless "vatican source" who may not even exist except in the mind of the writer.
#21327
personally, i believe concerts are not lavish.  they're just formal events.  (of course, i don't have rock concerts in mind here, which are chaotic.)  so why read more into his absence when the reason announced was enough?

on the other hand, this media report wasn't made by a mediaman for nothing.  they who need to whip up a storm to come up with an interesting story had to sometimes write stories that teeter on the thin line between truth and titillation.

Pope Francis recently surprised some in the Vatican by failing to show up for a concert where he was expected to be the guest of honor. Some believe the move is another message that the pontiff will not indulge in lavish events.

hey, why put more meaning to what was announced as the reason?  one can always take the officially announced reason as the only one.  fini.

the papal office has enough staff to know what to do for a head of state, in this case the pope.  they would send word of "regrets" that the pope cannot attend, way ahead of the occasion.  that's how it's done in the civilized world of diplomacy.  he really must have been planning to attend, and had found it impossible at the last minute.

makigduwa ka, diretso na lang ug hapihap sa ulo ug lawas (never the tummy) or gitika behind the ears.  never tease them with speed, kay lupig gyod ta kay di man kaha ta iring.  what's more, with a little more effort at discernment, makaila ka sa batasan sa iring just by looking at their eyes.  chances are cats with a certain arrogant look are bound to attack more than those with soft eyes and a self-effacing look.  know thy cat, and know thyself.

The 2000's saw Connery make two of his more regrettable career decisions. The first saw him turn down the part of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films, ostensibly because he 'didn't understand the script'. It was reported that he was offered around 15% of the JRR Tolkein adaptation's box office receipts for the role, a deal which could have seen him earn as much as $400million. In an attempt to learn from his mistake, Connery decided to accept another role he didn't 'understand': the lead in comic book adaptation The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The production process was notoriously chaotic and the film received lukewarm reviews, causing Connery to become disillusioned with the industry and prompting his retirement from filmmaking.

Connery finally became Sir Sean when he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. He had been nominated in 1997 and 1998 and, while some claim the delay was down to his Scottish nationalist beliefs, others state that it was because of comments he'd made apparently condoning violence towards women.

Despite having not been resident in his homeland for some time, Connery has been a vocal supporter of the Scottish National Party, and has stated he believes he'll see a fully independent Scotland within his lifetime. He supported the party financially, until the British Parliament passed a law prohibiting overseas funding of political activities in the UK in 2001.

One of his biggest post-Bond box office successes came in 1989, when he played the eponymous hero's father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - despite only being 12 years older than leading man Harrison Ford. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were desperate for Connery to take the role as the Indiana Jones series had been heavily inspired by his take on James Bond.

Despite being one of the most widely-recognized film actors on the planet, it wasn't until 1988 that Connery received recognition from the Academy. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn in cop drama The Untouchables - the only time he's even been nominated.

The 1970s saw big changes in other aspects of Connery's life. After a long and bitter divorce from his first wife, he was married for a second time to French artist Micheline Roquebrune in 1975. The couple are still together today.

Despite his fear of being typecast, Connery managed to carve out a highly successful acting career after departing the Bond series. During the 1970s he appeared in classic films including The Man Who Would Be King and Murder on The Orient Express, and starred alongside the likes of Sir Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogard, James Caan and Michael Caine in Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far.

Fearing he would be typecast and complaining of repetitive plotlines, Connery decided to quit the Bond character after 1967's You Only Live Twice. He was replaced by George Lazenby for 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but the Australian actor only lasted one film, prompting United Artists to tempt Connery back to the role for 1971's Diamonds Are Forever with a record-breaking salary of £1.5million (which would equate to in excess of US$32million in today's money).

Diamonds would mark Connery's final official appearance as Bond, but he did reprise the role in 1984's non-canonical Thunderball remake Never Say Never Again.

As the Bond films' popularity increased, Connery continued to make the role his own. And it wasn't just the Scotsman's profile that was skyrocketing - the 007 films kept on becoming more and more high budget affairs, with his third outing as Bond, Goldfinger, having a budget equal to that of the two preceding films combined.

As well as his marriage, 1962 gave Connery another reason to celebrate: he was cast in the role that made him famous - that of British secret agent James Bond in the first big screen adaptation of Ian Fleming's novels. Connery was plucked from obscurity by producer Harry Saltzman, after the likes of Cary Grant, James Mason and David Niven all turned down the role.

Bond creator Fleming initially considered Connery too 'unrefined' to play the sophisticated spy, prompting the film's director Terence Young to teach the Scot how to walk, talk and eat like a 'gentleman'. Fleming was eventually won over by his leading man's performance, and for many Connery's is still the definitive portrayal of James Bond.

After picking up minor roles in various films and TV shows, Connery finally gained a lead when he was cast as Michael McBride in Walt Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People - a 1959 film about a wily Irishman engaged in a battle of wits with some mischievous leprechauns.

Two years later, he co-starred with Claire Bloom in a BBC television production of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.

Connery had been a bodybuilder since the age of 18, and - armed only with a pair of swimming trunks and some body oils - placed third in the tall men's division of the 1953 Mr. Universe compeition. The event turned into a something of a crossroads for Connery. Another competitor, Johnny Isaacs, suggested that Connery should attend a casting for a stage production of South Pacific, and at that point his acting career was born.

After he left the Navy, it seemed as if Connery was destined for a life of hard work in dead-end jobs. Among other things, he worked as a lorry driver, a lifeguard, a labourer and a coffin-polisher. He also (thanks to his athletic, highly-toned physique) landed a job as an artist's model at the Edinburgh College of Art.

After leaving school, Connery got a job as a milkman in the local Co-Operative Society, before signing up to join the Royal Navy. Unfortunately, he was discharged after three years due to a stomach ulcer, and briefly went back to working as a milkman.

During his years in the Navy, he got two tattoos: one that reads 'Mum & Dad', and another that reads 'Scotland Forever'.

Though her talents are unrivaled, Nora has been named the ASPCA Cat of the Year as much for her musical abilities as for her pluck and drive to prove that shelter petsâ€"far from being castoffsâ€"often make the best animal companions. Nora is a true testament to the spirit of the Humane Awards, which every year honor exceptional animals as well as inspiring individuals who have dedicated their lives to animal welfare.

Check our website for a complete list of this year’s award winners, including a guide dog for a disabled Iraq War veteran and two undercover agents who assisted in the largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history.

Originally deemed “bossy” by shelter staff, Nora wasn’t the most popular feline among her four-legged clan, but Betsy and Burnell saw something special in the demonstrative kitty and welcomed her into their furry family. Nora immediately established herself as the alpha cat of the family’s four other felines, but it wasn’t until she was a year old that her secret gift suddenly emerged. One afternoon, Betsy, who teaches music lessons, was startled to discover Nora delicately tickling the ivories of her Yamaha piano. Playing the piano soon became the cat’s favorite pastime. Her sensitive pawing, which several newspapers have described as "a cross between free jazz and Philip Glass,” became a YouTube sensation, drawing more than 20 million page views. It also inspired a Lithuanian composer to arrange a symphony in her honor.

Piano-Playing Tabby Wins ASPCA Cat of the Year Award

When Betsy Alexander and Burnell Yow of Philadelphia, PA, visited an animal shelter in Cherry Hill, NJ, they never imagined they would adopt a feline prodigy. Nora, a grey Tabby named after the surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, appeared to be your average mischievous young kitten. But this seemingly ordinary shelter cat is receiving an extraordinary honor next week, when she will be officially named Cat of the Year at the annual ASPCA Humane Awards in New York City.

thanks a lot, lorenz.

btw, homeotherapy isn't taught in medical schools?
#21387
LORENZ!  please, what can you say about homeotherapy as mentioned by my friend in this her letter?  what's your opinion, please.  tomorrow, the oncologist will decide on the schedule of surgery, which is already a given.  my sister is open to integrative medicine.  she said she'd do all she can to avoid chemotherapy.  please help us with your prayers.

It’s no wonder that as we read in the opening of the second of our two prayers to St. Peregrine, many Catholics refer to him as the “mighty” and the “wonder-worker!” He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.

Although there are an increasing number of cancer survivors, there is still no cure for this disease. Prayer is always needed in the fight against cancer, along with research and education, such as that provided by the American Cancer Society.

We hope the prayers to St. Peregrine above, along with others here, can bring you comfort and strength from our Lord. He Himself, like St. Peregrine, as we are reminded in these prayers, was no stranger to suffering!

The night before the operation, Peregrine spent the night in prayer before a crucifix in a hospital chapel. He dreamt at one point there that Christ came down from the cross and healed his leg. When he woke up, he and his doctors, made the joyful discovery that he was completely cured. God had truly performed a miracle on this holy man!

Peregrine himself performed numerous miracles in his life. After his death in 1345, there were countless others, especially in Spain. The Church attributed to him more than 300 cures of cancer and other illnesses from 1694 to 1726 in one city there alone!

Peregrine spent the rest of his life ministering to the poor and the sick, mainly in his hometown of Forli where he established a new house for the Servites. His dedication to the faith was such that, according to tradition, he would stand constantly instead of sitting down, as a form of penance.

He underwent a severe trial when he developed a cancerous sore on his leg (as we see in depictions of him such as the one above) as well as his feet. Doctors decided upon amputation as treatment.

He and some companions showed up one day to heckle and otherwise abuse St. Philip Benizi, the Prior General of the Servants of Mary, who was preaching in Forli. Peregrine went so far as to strike him in the face! St. Philip, seemingly following our Lord’s advice in scripture (Matt 5:39, Luke 6:29), offered his other cheek in response.

This gesture so moved Peregrine that he quickly asked for Philip’s forgiveness and soon thereafter converted to Catholicism, spending much time in prayer at the Chapel of Our Lady at the Cathedral. Mary appeared to him there in a vision asking him to join the Servite Order in Siena. He was received there by St. Philip!

Knowing St. Peregrine

St. Peregrine is known as the patron saint of cancer patients, AIDS victims and others suffering from serious illnesses. These two prayers give us an intriguing glimpse into his life’s story. Peregrine Laziosi was born in 1260 in Forli, Italy to a wealthy family. Although he was a member of an anti-papal party as a young man, he experienced a profound change of heart, much like St. Paul’s conversion in its intensity.

The second of these prayers to St. Peregrine is for others’ intentions.  (fellow tb pilgrims, please help me pray this for my sister.)

O great St. Peregrine, you have been called "The Mighty," "The Wonder-Worker," because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you. For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you. (Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick for whom you are praying.) Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. Amen.

St. Peregrine

Are you suffering from cancer? Or do you know someone who is? These prayers to St. Peregrine can give you hope! This first one is for those afflicted with this deadly disease:

St. Peregrine, whom Holy Mother Church has declared Patron of those suffering from Cancer, I confidently turn to you for help in my present sickness. I beg your kind intercession. Ask God to relieve me of this sickness, if it be his Holy Will. Plead with the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Sorrows, whom you loved so tenderly and in union with whom you have suffered the pains of Cancer, that she may help me with her powerful prayers and loving consolation.

But if it should be God’s Holy Will that I bear this sickness, obtain for me courage and strength to accept these trails from the loving hand of God with patience and resignation, because he knows what is best for the salvation of my soul. St. Peregrine, be my friend and patron. Help me to imitate you in accepting suffering, and to unite myself with Jesus Crucified and the Mother of Sorrows, as you did. I offer my pains to God with all the love of my heart, for his glory and the salvation of souls, especially my own. Amen.

Calling medical doctors and doctors of philopsophy: ngano nga naa may gustong mo-post sa ngil-ad nilang mga nawong?

This will always remain a mystery to me until after you offer me a good explanation. Thank you in advance.

no mystery there.  and no medical doctors and doctors of philosophy may be needed.  the mystery lies in your personal taste.

beyonce and kim kardashian are all over the papers and the internet, purportedly as beauties, but as far as i'm concerned they're nothing but human backhoes and not swans in the league of julia roberts.

the most mysterious of all is why it matters to you. ;D
